2 – 8 JUNE

I

’m running out of shoes. Not imminently, but in the last month I’ve had to throw away three pairs, and I didn’t have that many to start off with! It’s been the rain and the wear and the shoes generally reaching the end of their natural lifetimes as I charge around town seeing shows, meeting friends and generally make the most of living in this delightfully demanding city. I’ve always had a bit of a difficult time of it with shoes. I’m not one of those women who naturally collects footwear and takes joy and delight in going out shoe-shopping. To be honest, I’ve never had the chance. At over six feet tall in my stocking’d feet my footsies are larger than your average lady’s. Well they’d have to be. If they were dainty I’d fall over. It’d be like watching a pin trying to balance on it’s end. So with these great big plates of meat being a size 11 (believe it!) the shoes that I’ve acquired over the years have generally been collected on the “ooh! It fits!” principle over the “isn’t it pretty” incentive. This also means that I’ve kept certain pairs of shoes in circulation for really much longer than I should have done. Determining that I shall only wear my red boots in the Summer, because the holes in the soles let in water in a matter of seconds in a mild drizzle, is really not how life choices should be made. So it broke my heart to bite the bullet but I threw them away. But I have determined – no more shoes that hurt my feet! No More shoes that leak! I’m not going to grow into them, and they’re not going to grow into me. A wing and a prayer only gets you so far when you’re walking to Portslade Village from the pier and stamping the ground with each step. I’m just going to have to splash out and buy some new shoes. Now all I have to do is find some.

efreshed, invigorated and vibrant and with something for everyone. It may be in the same location, but after £400,000, intense market research and a typical flourish, Walkabout has returned for good to its old stomping ground at the seafront end of West Street, Brighton. New menu, new drinks and a new venue but the same Aussie classics. Avocado and halloumi wraps sit alongside the iconic Walkabout Kangaroo Steak. Aussie beers and new Walkabout cocktails are served with huge plasma screens projecting images of sun and surf and a chilled out beer garden at the rear adds another ‘only at Walkabout’ treat. Friday 22nd saw over 1,100 revellers enjoying the opening night. Towie star Mario Falcone made a star appearance, posing for shots with delighted Walkabout customers, and enjoying a bit of Aussie welcome for himself. Other highlights included a 9 foot dancing Robot lit up with LED lights.

Saturday’s ‘Surfs Up Saturday’ saw over 1,300 clubbers coming through the door. Sunday included a day of live FA Cup

action on 26 HD TV screens and a further increase in numbers were expected for the Full Moon Party over the night time

The Better Half

On the evening of 21st May, The Better Half pub, at 1 Hove Place, Hove, held its official grand opening night. Locals, friends and Brighton and Hove society helped to wet the baby’s head with a drink or two and ensure that this new food and drink establishment is well in the minds of the city. The new pub – which somehow amazingly feels like it has always been here – was bustling and lively with drinkers, diners and well-wishers. Later into the evening colourful Brighton band, The New York Dollies, took to the stage and performed their cheeky, punk

covers in a 1950s style, enthralling the audience and heightening the atmosphere. As the guests partied into the night, they could be sure that this Hove pub has firmly made its mark on the map.

ANDREW KAY SMALL WORDS The joy of playing Scrabble

H

aving volunteered to take part in a clinical trial a few weeks back I received a call from the specialist conducting the study and invited in to meet him and to do some tests. As I kid I lived in fear of tests, in class I could more than keep up, not a prodigy but not a dunderhead either. In later years I came to believe that there was a massive difference between remembering stuff and learning something, the latter being far more useful. I know some of you will think me wrong, rating the memorising of times tables and the like as the greatest learning experiences in life – I just happen to disagree. I turned up at the given time and discovered that the tests were actully quite good fun. Simple challenges for the brain that I seemed to be able to deal with fairly easily. To be honest this was due to the majority of the tests being word based, and as you may have noticed I have little trouble dealing with words – in fact the hardest things to do is to get me to shut up, verbally or on paper. Anyway, I did okay, or if I dare say it, rather better than okay, especially when it came to verbally creating lists of words starting with given letters. I

romped through that and the doctor looked particularly impressed. It’s nothing to do with me being particularly bright, nothing to do with me having an immense

Mum is electronically nudging me to play my turn vocabulary either – neither of these. No, I put it down to one very simple thing that I have been doing since I was about seven years old – and that is playing Scrabble. I have played Scrabble with my mum since childhood and we play everyday to this very day. Back in the 1960s we played on a conventional board, then after a few years we converted to playing on a Travel Scrabble board, far easier than a board with loose

tiles, especially when you have a cat with an inquisitive mind, or mischievous nature. After leaving home at 18 our Scrabble fun was restriced to holidays, but it never stopped and we loved it as much as we had when I was growing up. Mum has always been a formidable player with a terrific vocabulary but also with something essential

to playing the game and winning. That is tactics, an aggressive approach to the game. A friend once agreed to play but after a few turns dropped out declaring that the way we played was horrible. By horrible they meant that we used tactics, knowledge of small but high scoring words, often obscure and sometimes words that we knew were acceptable even though we had no idea what they meant. Scrabble is a very clever game

but make no mistake, if you want to win then forget about trying to show off your intellectual skills or the scope of your vocabulary, it simply does not work like that. You can often score higher with two letter words than with something high-brow. Blocking is essential too, using up better positions on the board to stop your opponents getting in there. It’s an aggressive game when played well, make no mistake. Mum is as aggressive as me and we now play every day online. Having bought an iPad she is a demon and if I am slow at taking my turn she can get rather cross. I do not mind a bit. Scrabble is a lifelong bond but it is also a lifeline. Having suffered a clutch of strokes the game keeps her mind busy, challenges her hand eye coordination and keeps her entertained too. We love it, we laugh about it and boast about our scores. Not only does she play online with me but she now plays online with my friends, all of whom are impressed by the game-skills of this feisty lady who at eightysomething can kill them dead on the game board. As for me, when anyone asks me about my love of words I say that Scrabble paved the way. I must go now, Mum is electronically nudging me to play my turn.

This really is going to help make the whole project very special indeed. It already is pretty amazing though, especially with various companies donating things, such as the Brighton Energy Co-operative Company. Matt Brown said “ Brighton Energy Co-operative in conjunction with the Little Green Energy company are happy to be donating a photovoltaic solar panel with a meter, so that pupils can see how easily we can generate power from the sun”. Jackson-Moore Associates, chartered quantity surveyors and property consultants operating within the construction industry, have just donated a weather station for the bus. Thermoserv Ltd. have volunteered their services for installing the electrics. Martin Harris (Managing Director of Brighton and Hove Bus Company) said “this is one of those projects where it has been a real pleasure for everyone to be involved in”. Moving on from the bus though and to another project. The Homeless

MARTLETS MIDNIGHT WALK Make 2015 the year you take part in the Martlets legendary Midnight Walk – the biggest fundraising night out of the year! he Martlets Midnight Walk has become an annual event for many women who enjoy a great girls’ night out whilst raising money for their local hospice. Now in its ninth year, the Midnight Walk has raised over a million pounds, which has paid for more than 2,500 days of care on the In-Patient unit. These days the Martlets look after more patients in the comfort of their own homes than in the Hospice itself, and this kind of care costs £231 per patient per day. Last year, brave walkers battled through wind and rain, but every single one of them made it back and between them they raised more than £73,000. The Hospice receives less than a third of their

T

funding from the government and must raise £9,000 a day to care for patients and their families. This year there are three different routes to choose from, including a new 20 mile route. The 6 and 13 mile routes will start at midnight. However, 20 mile walkers will start at the earlier time of 10pm to allow for the extra distance. All the routes start from Brighton Racecourse and snake through Brighton & Hove. Marshals are on hand to ensure no one gets lost and whichever route you choose, you will be welcomed back with a well-deserved breakfast and hot drink. Walkers are asked to raise a minimum of £25 in sponsorship.

Anyone who raises over £125 in sponsorship will be entered into a prize draw to win a gorgeous Pandora bracelet. A lot of the women who take part in the walk are doing it in memory of someone who has died. Others may not have used the hospice services themselves but the walk can be an important way of supporting friends who have lost someone. Whatever your reason for taking part, however you do it and whatever you raise, you will be making a difference! Can you do it? Of course you can - all you need is determination and a sense of adventure! Next came broccoli, delicate spears balanced with the lightest and fluffiest potato gnocchi imaginable. I managed to persuade Felix to divulge his secret and as I had suspected they are made from baked potato and not boiled, a hand tip well worth following. Perhaps the most popular dish of the evening was a trio of incredible Chinese style dumplings filled with a delicate aubergine puree on a

ICEX APPEAL

International Chef Exchange Vancouver comes to Brighton

T

he observant amongst you will have noticed that for the last few years I have been pretty preoccupied by a project called International Chef Exchange or ICEx as it we like to call it. It has taken me to Holland three times, Sicily, Guernsey and Sweden and all three of those projects can now be seen on Latest TV or by going to the Latest TV website and looking in the food and drink section. I am immensely proud of them and of the entire team who took part in them and made them happen. SIx finished programmes exist but since then we have undertaken a seventh, and last week we completed that when Felix Zhou of The Parker in Vancouver came over to do his end of the Canadian exchange – and what a night it was. Felix had exchanged his small but perfectly formed vegetarian restaurant in British Columbia with head chef Matty Bowling of Terre à Terre earlier this year. That was a huge success and the kind people at Tourism Vancouver had made my team very welcome in their beautiful city. Now it was our turn to offer them our hospitality and the city’s best. This we did in a series of meals at the finest we have to offer – but the real purpose of the visit was of course the dinner at Terre à Terre cooked by Felix working with Matty and his highly skilled kitchen brigade. We were not to be disappointed. As with nearly all of the exchanges there has grown a strong bond between the chefs involved, all of

Watch Latest Entertainment on

There has grown a strong bond between the chefs involved them exchanging ideas, techniques and passion and this was evident from the first to the last courses of Felix’s delicious multi-course dinner. We started with a delicious cocktail created by Festival Favourite Sarah Thompson of Blackdown Spirits, a real kick start to what was going to be a true celebration. Our first dish, an amuse bouche of radishes came with a fascinating olive soil that was both sweet and salt, tantalising stuff to set our palates off. Our next dish was a celebration of asparagus. Felix had chargrilled some, shaved some and found

some wild sprue to decorate the lot. This was all served with a soft poached egg which he had dressed the day before with a tiny amount of truffle oil. It was quite frankly the best asparagus dish I have ever eaten and the only fault we could find was that there was no bread to clean up the residual egg yolk dressing. This was of course remedied by the brilliant front of house team who produced some pretty quickly. Next came a roast cauliflower dish, basted in an English mustard glaze it had my tongue wiggling with delight. Felix is quite clearly a

pool of Thai green curry inspired sauce. Soft aubergine in a toasty shell with a rich and vibrant sauce, it was indeed heavenly. To finish a cheescake, but not as you know it. Felix created something so light and delicate, with pastry crumbs and all set off by a mysteriously amazing endive jam, yes bitter sweet and utterly fascinating. I will be trying that one at home for certain. We drank delicious British Columbian wines brought over by Sumerhill Winemaker Ezra Cipes, a real treat as they are not available in the UK normally. ICEx is a huge success, please do tune in to Latest TV and catch all six episodes and wait with baited breath for the Vancouver Exchange. FILM

FAIRNESS IN FILM he Oscar nominated, Golden Globe winning actress Maggie Gyllenhaal was recently told by a Hollywood producer that she was too old to play opposite a 55year-old man... at the age of 37! A flurry of supportive articles were published, all condemning the continuation of actresses going straight from the 20something love interest to playing the de-sexed mother, whilst male actors can be leads at any age. Whilst it is good that Hollywood finds itself under increased scrutiny for failing to represent women fairly on screen, why is it still the case? Surely by 2015 something should have changed? Hollywood's love affair with old men romancing young women has history: Kim Novak was half 50-year-old James Stewart’s age whilst filming 1958’s Vertigo. 1942's Casablanca tells of 41year-old Humphrey Bogart reconciling his relationship with 27-year-old Ingrid Bergman! Bogart is part of my favourite screen couple with his real life wife Lauren Bacall- 25 years his junior. These pairings generally add to the story and are part of classic cinema history... but they shouldn't be the norm. I adore Film Noir's tales of wise old detectives, beaten by life, and the endearingly innocent ingenues that bring them back from the brink. But why does this pairing need to be repeated in other genres, again and again? Why, in modern cinema, is the age gap rarely even a plot point? It is taken as given that young, beautiful women in their twenties will be attracted to much older men and that the men themselves will have no interest in women their own age. This is not to say that there is something wrong with an age gap like that between Bradley Cooper (40) and his frequent screen partner Jennifer Lawrence (24) nor that between Emma Stone (26) and Colin Firth (54) in Magic in the Moonlight (a Woody Allen 'classic' if only for this reason). Older men are not innately unattractive and beautiful young women can attract older men. Yet there is clearly a problem with our media when it is convinced that this dynamic is the norm and there is a problem with our society when we accept it as the abiding reality. The Centre for the Study of Women in Television, Film & New Media reported that, in the top 100 films of 2014, female actors took just 12% of leading roles. Earlier this month, the American Civil Liberties Union announced it would investigate why major studios regularly fail to hire female directors for their films, citing “rampant discrimination” in the industry. They promote the idea that older women are not beautiful, are not worth watching and have nothing to offer. The “older woman” in this case is only 37.

ocal artist Shyama Ruffell describes her work as ‘a cocktail of William Morris, Mackintosh and Rousseau in an English meadow, with a splash of Klimt and a squeeze of The Jungle Book’. Intrigued? Then put a date in your diary for the fourth Brunswick Town Art Fair, on Sunday 28 June from 11am-6pm. Shyama’s playful prints will be bringing a splash of colour Shyama Ruffell to The Regency Town House, which will also be hosting the equally fascinating work of Carola del Mese. Part Italian, Carola’s childhood included time spent in churches punctured with romantic shafts of dusty light. The priceless reliquaries of forgotten saints, the smell of wax and incense and the solemnfaced statues in candlelight all left a lasting impression. She uses elements rescued from flea markets and found in junk shops - small tokens that she can make stories from. “It’s important to me that I use items with a previous history,” Carola Carola del Mese says. “Each piece starts as an uncertain idea, and the finished item is often a surprise, the creative process moulding the piece and giving it life as it emerges.” Another Arty favourite at the Fair will be Ian Hodgson, whose image ‘The Flower of Brunswick’ was inspired by the famous Doric columns of Brunswick Square itself. Here blended with the leaves of the acanthus plant for an arresting, ethereal result. Ian’s work examines how identity is imprinted with memories connected to place, objects and relationships, which creates Ian Hodgson a framework for the drawings to develop. “In some of my work, architecture is the defining presence, whereas in others figures or objects inhabit the space, but all refer to the transformative process of my journey,” he says. There will be more than 50 other local artists showing alongside Ian, Carola and Shyama, offering a mix of paintings, prints, photographs, cards, ceramics, sculpture and jewellery that promises something for everyone at affordable prices. Sunday 28 June from 11am-6pm.Admission is free and refreshments will be available. So don’t miss out. www.artymagazines.com

ance superstar Carlos Acosta dances in Brighton for the first time with three special performances July 9-11 2015. Carlos is the world's favourite dancer and On Before his most personal work to date. The show builds on Carlos' astonishing dance vision and features collaborations with major UK and international dance stars. On Before is created and danced by Carlos Acosta and features Royal Ballet principal dancer Zenaida Yanowsky. The show combines existing and new choreography by some of the world’s leading dance makers, Russell Maliphant, Kim Brandstrup, Edwaard Liang, Miguel Altunaga in a framework created by Carlos which tells the story of a doomed relationship between a man and a woman. The show has a wide-ranging score from Handel to new commissions from Cuban composer Omar Puente and culminates in a moving finale featuring a live choral performance, by Brighton’s own Jam Tarts Choir, of Morte Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium. Highlights include Acosta’s performance of Russell Maliphant’s graceful, fluid

Three works have a distinct Cuban identity, addressing Acosta’s heritage – the first choreographed by Carlos, features a new music commission from Cuban-born violinist and jazz musician Omar Puente. The second is a commission from Cuban choreographer George Céspedes (Danza Contemporanea de Cuba) which features a new score from

Brighton Fringe out – and the Edinburgh Fringe approach brings rich fruits

W

asn’t the Brighton Fringe choc-full of fabulous shows and lovely ideas? We are very fortunate to have such a smorgasbord of talent come our way for what is now England’s biggest Fringe festival, but if you’re worried about running dry on imaginative new shows, creative places to find laughs, and comics from around the country descending on us with their hopes in our hands... fear not. The largest Fringe festival in the world is the Edinburgh Fringe, and that takes place over three weeks in August. It’s a showcase internationally of writing and performances talents from all fields to grab attention from the TV magnates, the movie moguls, as well as agents, venues and – of course – the general public. Which means that loads of the best comics in the country, and around the world, have spent the last six months working on a show they think will show them off to the very best of their abilities. And it is these shows, these treasured babies, that are brought to respected audiences to help mold and shape to perfection. Luckily, Brighton audiences are renowned for knowing their comedy and being a very good tuning fork for quality, which means that we will get the chance, throughout June and July, of seeing shows in thier almost-ready state from some of the best names in comedy for a fraction of the fully finished show’s price. We’re helping them to shape the very best, but if it wasn’t something they were already pretty chuffed with they wouldn’t bring it in front of an audience at all! So, check out the venues and take your pick. The names coming to town include James Acaster, Angela Barnes, Sara Pascoe, Paul Sinha, Mark Steel, Rob Beckett, Stephen Carlin, Holly Burn, Nathan Caton, Carl Donnelly, Tiffany Stevenson, Ed Gamble, Iain Sterling, Joe Lycett and many more. Told you they were good. www.komedia.co.uk/brighton www.otherplacebrighton.co.uk carolineofbrunswick.co.uk theoldmarket.com

hroughout the history of rock'n'roll musicians have often had a substantial makeover, whilst in mid-career; The Beatles, David Bowie, umm Status Quo, er Mumford & Sons... Beth Jeans Houghton has gone one step further, and ditched her previous band name, for something new. Welcome, Du Blonde! “When I was a kid, my idea of being a musician came from all these big characters – Bowie, Bolan, Beefheart,” she says. “I had this moment (at the V&A’s David Bowie Is... exhibition) in front of all these chapters of his life... all this stuff that was really important to me in the beginning, all of the creativity, emotional expulsion. I’d just lost all of that.” Her debut album as Beth Jeans Houghton And The Hooves Of Destiny was a great record, a welding of psychedelic folk, soul, blues and psyche into something approaching contemporary chamber pop. It was also full of melody and inventive lyrical insights. But it was when the band were recording the follow up in Los Angeles that it all came to head for Houghton. “I couldn’t work out why I was having such trouble expressing myself with the music I was writing, but I then realised the instrumentation didn’t lend itself to the anger I was feeling.” So, the sessions were

abandoned and the band broke up, an experience she likens to “divorcing five husbands.” After a period of suffering writer’s block and anxiety, a friend helped to unlock the creativity by pointing out that the second album wasn’t angry at all, whereas Beth was. Almost immediately, she set about writing again, and half the album was written in a day. Produced by Bad Seed Jim Sclavanus, ‘Welcome Back To Milk’ is a more aggressive, less whimsical affair than the debut album. It's not necessarily better, or worse, just different. For the most part though, Du Blonde marks a complete departure from her previous work and persona. New look, new name, new attitude. It also features Future Islands frontman Samuel T Herring. Upon witnessing Herring in concert she said: “I’m either going to work with him or marry him.” Two years later she got her wish. That, and the voice of her late grandfather on closing track ‘Isn't It Wild’, shows that Beth Jeans Houghton aka Du Blonde remains a gifted writer, and one we should embrace whatever she calls herself. This beautifully staged and devised story of love, myth and sea mammals off the British coast was a real treat to behold. Like an elaborate clockwork, the finer details complimented the powering themes, the whirring of the set, soundtrack and folio so much more than the sum of their parts, working perfectly in sync, to deliver up an enchanting whole. Alan’s character is painted deftly with bold yet precise strokes, instantly relatable and recognisable in his flawed self as a recent graduate in that

ow. It’s easy to forget or dismiss the trauma of schooldays. Butterfly Catcher, from Luton’s Next Generation Youth Theatre, reminded us of the pressures and passions, the discoveries and expectations with a brutal yet articulate and utterly true need that was heart-breaking and shaming to those who no longer remember. Ostensibly a love story, this musical theatre piece was so much more – a snapshot of the hothouse of hormones and expectations piled up upon each other, barely leaving space to breathe in the crush. Passionately performed by a totally invested and talented cast. Do see it for a snapshot of this generation’s ‘Brick In The Wall’.

Lost In Transit

The quest to locate a lost suitcase is never an easy one. But imagine if your journey featured world class acrobats and host of silly clowns all trying to get in your way. From soulful singing to A-star acrobatics, Lost In Transit’s mix of cabaret, circus and stage show really did have something for everyone Created for the Spiegeltent, this was an apt show to grace the centrepiece venue of the Fringe. Achingly funny and achingly poignant in equal measures, it was a show that delighted throughout. The show ended with a conga line from the audience circling the stage – I think that’s what you call a bunch of happy punters. Spiegeltent, 22 May 2015 ★★★★★ Tim Ridgway

The Hallé – Benjamin Grosvenor (piano) Gareth Small (trumpet) Brighton Festival Chorus Mark Elder (conductor)

I always knew this would be a splendid concert and my high expectations were wonderfully exceeded! The Hallé captured the magical quality of Janáček’s ‘The Cunning Little Vixen’ Suite, playful, fanciful, feral. Benjamin Grosvenor and Gareth Small delivered all the punch and irony you could want from Shostakovich’s thrilling ‘Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings’. Sir Mark’s scrupulous direction brought out the best of his soloists’ masterly performance. The Brighton Festival Chorus and an excellent solo quartet (Giselle Allen, Madeleine Shaw, Peter Berger and Clive Bayley) then joined the Hallé for Janáček’s ‘Glagolitic Mass’. This almost symphonic work demands an exceptionally wide range of colour and passion; the Hallé delivered! Brighton Dome Studio Theatre, 22 May 2015 ★★★★★ Andrew Connal

Current Location

Eschewing a straightforward narrative, this play was instead a contemplative, haunting sci-fi tale and with a somewhat unique style. Centring around a choir in a small village, the story was laden with uncertainty and fear regarding the end of the world, including a lake drying up, birdsong ending and other mysterious signs. The live singing was superb and the performances were strong, luring one in to a strange world. Although the plot was intentionally vague, the lack of resolution or explanation significantly hindered the play. Some refining and of the promising premise could have perhaps resulted in something more impressive and immersive. One Church Brighton, 27 May 2015

SUNDAY 7 Location, Location, Location Channel 4, 7.05pm Time for some fantasy shopping! To be honest, we do live in one of the loveliest parts of the country, but Royal Tunbridge Wells is no shirker in the beauty department either. Robin and Gemma are looking for their first home together there, after spending three years in Singapore. How many levels of culture shock here?

Protecting Our Foster Kids BBC2, 10pm With the attention drawn in the news in the last decade to the true vulnerabilities of society’s most at risk children, this will be an interesting programme to view. What safeguards are there in place now? Is it a case of locking the stable door after the horse has bolted – or will this really have an eye to the future?

FILM: The Breakfast Club ITV3, 12.40am Stay up late on a Sunday night and revisit a youth of struggle, disillusionment, and Molly Ringwald’s lipstick trick. Part of the John Hughes classic oeuvre, a handful of high school misfits spend detention together on a Saturday, breaking down barriers and stereotypes. And setting fire to a shoe.
