number of my friends have been dating of late. Maybe it’s the summer, or maybe it’s just that the Brighton Fringe is over so they have time to tell me of their exciting escapades. Regardless, the thing that strikes me the most is the wide variety of different kinds of dating circuits there are out there, and how the choice really is yours as to how brief and sweet – or intense and shacked-up-by-next-Tuesday-for-the-rest-of-your-lives – your relationships can be. Tinder and Grindr seem to be responsible for a high turnover of dating opportunities, making relationships more disposable (and exciting) with the ease at which a new one could be at your fingertips. And by that I’m not advocating dumping your long-term lover to see if the grass is greener and what it’s like to not always be the one mowing it. But I have noticed a certain stacking of dates on a single evening – meaning that there literally is another prospective love waiting in the wings. It’s like self-orchestrated speed dating with an hour for each interviewee instead of three minutes. And you’re the one in charge of the pinger-thingy. Alternatively, I’ve also witnessed the slower more drawn out prerelationship courting that’s been a bit of a joy to behold. Going on a picnic, having a lunch date, stepping back and playing with that first interaction the online alternatives circumnavigate entirely – does this person that you like, like you back? I mean ‘like’ like. Y’know. More than Doc Martin but less than Doctor Who? Plus, of course, this is Brighton so if there’s any other quirk or delight inbetween there’s bound to be a group or forum for it, although whether my friends will tell me about their use of those remains to be seen. Summer is here and anything is possible. And I can’t wait.

ANDREW KAY CAST NE’ER A CLOUT Getting spectacular was born with a squint, don’t laugh, it wasn’t bad but one eye was, and I believe still is, slightly lazier than the other. For years I would attend the eye clinic on a regular basis only to be sent away with the soothing words that it would probably correct itself, which I guess in time it did. From the age of seven I was discharged and never returned. I was of course relieved because back then the solution that other kids seemed to be given was a pair of clear plastic specs with one lens covered in flesh pink cloth sticking plaster. It was not a great look although years later I sat next to Adam Ant on a bus and he was wearing those very same clear plastic specs and somehow managed to pull the look off. To be honest, he could have been sporting a cabbage and a pint of custard and he would have looked good, he really was a very beautiful young man. I didn’t need glasses but I sort of wished that I did because I thought that with them I might have managed to achieve just a splash of his glamorous charisma. Ah well, he obviously had good genes, and jeans! It was much later in life that I started to struggle to read. I built up quite good arm muscles moving heavy books backwards and forwards in front of my eyes in the hope that at some point the text would become legible. Of course it did not and I had to make a visit to an optician. Reading glasses they said, not very strong but strong enough to enable the comfortable digestion of a book again. I was delighted and for a few years reading glasses did the trick – except for one thing. I did have a tendency to forget them. There’s nothing more annoying than discovering that you need your specs and that you have put them down somewhere. Now that somewhere could in fact be anywhere, in the bedroom, in the bathroom, in the office, in a restaurant, quite frankly they were left all over the place. The next time I had a check up I discovered that my long vision was a little worse and I enquired

about having varifocals. Now I know that the word varifocals is synonymous with getting old and I had terrible thoughts that if I got them I would have to move to Eastbourne or
I was born with a squint, don’t laugh, it wasn’t bad but one eye was, and I believe still is, slightly lazier than the other Worthing. Apologies to both as they are indeed very fine towns indeed with plenty going for them and that was a cheap and easy jibe. Varifocals in fact gave me a new lease of life, I don’t mind wearing specs and I rather enjoy going in for my regular check up. These days I go to Specky Wren which is in the entrance way to the newly regenerated London Road Open Market. I like that too. The Specky Wren furnished me with the big red specs you see in my picture (look left). I loved them from day one, they had that great slightly mad professor look that goes so well with my mad professor hair. The trouble is that my reading is now a bit worse, added to

which I was struggling in the sun to read even a bus number and certainly couldn’t read anything on my phone. So now the nice Specky Wrens have furnished me with new specs that solve not only the reading but also the sun problem. They darken in the sun and they get light again very quickly when I go indoors. My only problem now is that as I write this the rain is driving in off the sea in the most unpleasant manner, especially as it is June. Can you get specs with windscreenwipers, I think you can in joke shops, but The Specky Wren is not a joke, it’s a very nice place with excellent professional advice and a great range of stylish frames at a variety of prices to suit all budgets. I’m no Adam Ant but my Specky Wren specs are pretty cool. 1-2 Marshalls Row, Brighton BN1 4JU, United Kingdom 01273 911191 www.thespeckywren.co.uk
MODO The frames that I chose were from a range designed by a company called Modo Eyewear. I did a bit of research and discovered the following: “MODO continues its dedication to social responsibility with our “Buy a Frame Give a Frame” program with the Seva Foundation through Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS). For each MODO frame purchased, we will
www.thelatest.co.uk •
donate a frame to those in need as part of the World Health Organization Vision 2020 initiative. The NNJS is credited with coordinating 90 percent of all eye care services in Nepal. Of the 2.2 million Nepali people seeking eye care consultations annually, 43% are potentially in need of eyeglasses, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). They specifically target the prevention of blindness and impaired vision due to uncorrected refractive error – simply the need for an eye exam and a pair of glasses. More than 600 million people around the world are blind or vision impaired because they do not have access to the eye examination and glasses they need. Modo “Buy a Frame Give a Frame” program is a pledge to provide free spectacles to those in need. We are partnering with Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh to reach the visually impaired in need of help and provide eye exams and proper eye-care. Modo is eager to help improving the lives of children, men and women with low vision and giving them a chance to look at a brighter future”. I was impressed by this, impressed by the policy of the manufacturer but also by the fact that the guys at The Specky Wren did not maximise on this excellent policy.

Dr Caroline Oprandi Keeping you up to date with science and technology at PACA
Brighton & Hove Buses the only way to travel This week: Rottingdean
have recently been to Studio Hardie and met with William (the guy with a hat, who was on George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces). As soon as you walk into the workshop, you feel that you are entering into a very special place. These people are basically taking a tree and are turning it into something wondrous. It is a skill that I think should be widely revered and paid handsomely for but I’m not sure that this is always the case. When considering advances in science and technology I believe that we have to keep sight of these traditional crafts and not let them become insignificant. They need to co-exist side-by side with advances in technology. As well as having beautiful constructed items from wood, we also need to be thinking about designing the next generation of building materials. This is something that the University Technical College@ Harbourside will be offering future generations. The UTC College will be housed in the Victorian Marine and Carpenters Workshop at Newhaven, built in 1882 by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway Company. It has stood empty since 1980 and in 1993 became a listed building. For a great write up of the history of the building and UTC@harbourside see the recent article in VivaLewes (issue 105). UTC@harbourside will open in September 2015 and will focus on marine and environmental engineering. University Technical Colleges offer 14 to 18 year olds the opportunity to learn highly regarded academic and technical subjects and become the inventors, engineers, scientists and technicians of tomorrow. Students learn these subjects in highly integrated ways, with an emphasis on project-based learning rather than traditional learning approaches. Students combine their academic studies with its practical applications and get hands-on to experiment, design, make, test and evaluate using specialised equipment.
owards the end of the 19th century it offered seclusion and inspiration for many artists, writers and public figures, factors which influence both residents and visitors to this day. The main attractions in the town are Kipling's Garden, Rottingdean Windmill, St. Margaret's Church with its beautiful stained glass windows and some traditional old inns which were once frequented by smugglers in the area. The beautiful village of Rottingdean, located just outside Brighton, can be reached on Brighton & Hove Buses Route 2, Coaster 12s and Route 27. The village, although ancient, became popular with artists, writers and public figures in the 19th century and their legacy still exists with a continuing artsy feel to the village. One of the main attractions in Rottingdean is the Kiplings Gardens, where Rudyard Kipling lived from 1897 to 1902. Admission is free and the gardens include the Rose Garden, Herb Garden and Wild Garden – the Wild Gardens can be used for picnics. The main shopping street is full of interesting boutiques and specialist shops. You could also while away the afternoon in the local tea rooms and pubs. The village museum is housed in the Grange, which is also the library and an art gallery, or you can always just stroll around this beautiful village which includes many historic buildings, a village pond and green. The Rottingdean Windmill is located in the Beacon Hill nature reserve. The nature reserve is a great place to listen to the skylarks, and view the South Downs and sea.

If all of that was not enough, local burlesque queen Cherry Shakewell, dressed in 1920s showgirl glamour, complete with white ostrich feather fans, strutted her stuff amongst the diners and capped what was a quite extraordinary evening in the most flamboyant style. In amongst the fun and glamour we also managed to raise a decent sum of money for the orphanage in India for children with HIV that Khanthi and his team are supporting. Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival proves that local is best ell that’s another swathe of fabulous Brighton and Hove Food & Drink Festival successfully completed, despite me being laid low with a bad back. Sadly I was unable to attend many of the wonderful events created by Mr Nick Mosley and the festival team, but those I did manage to make it to were magical. The final weekend of course saw me on stage at Hove lawns hosting the Live Food Stage with the very best chefs from in and around Brighton and Hove as well as guests from Guernsey and The Hague. Our activity with the International Chef Exchange project has made us many friends and it was a delight to see them back here to participate in our festival. Both Tony Leck and Bas Oonk took the stage and cooked up a storm. Make Your Case was the usual wild and ribald wine tasting fun, and once again we managed to raise a substantial sum for Rockinghorse who support the Royal Alexander Children’s Hospital. But my best night out had to be the Three Chefs Go To The Movies dinner, hosted by chef Kanthi Thamma and Euan Sey at the Curry Leaf Cafe. Mr Mosley and I, after a few drinks, thought that it would be fun to ask the chefs to theme their dishes around their favourite films. It proved to be a fun idea that inspired some truly wonderful food. The first course fell to Semone Bonner, now of The Set. His choice of film was Jaws and his complex dish of pressed skate in a seafood broth with a chicken croquette and seaweeds was delivered to the tables through a mist of fog and to the scary theme from the movie. We thought that it would be fun to ask the chefs to theme their dishes around their favourite films was fun and it was delicious too. The main course fell to Kanthi Thamma of the Curry Leaf Cafe and there was no surprise that his choice was his favourite Bollywood blockbuster. His team leapt from the kitchens and rushed around the tables streaking the diners with vibrant coloured powders in Holi style before delivering equally vibrant thalis. Kanthi’s food is stunning and on each visit I discover new delights and dishes that I have never, in over 40 years of eating Indian food, tasted or even heard of. Later that week I took Bas Oonk to their new venture, a kitchen based in the Temple Bar on Western Road
where we enjoyed a great selection of street foods and a few beers too. As usual I digress, Kanthi’s explosion of colour was followed by a thing of great beauty from chef Jimmy Grey of Jeremy’s at Borde Hill. Jimmy chose The Great Gatsby and in responce created a spectacularly opulent dish that had the room spellbound. A plate that boasted strawberry and Ridgeview sparkling wine jelly, fresh strawberries, dried strawberries, smoked strawberries (yes smoked), herbs, a chocolate truffle roll dusted in strawberry powder and flecked with gold leaf and finally a small jug of strawberry cocktail which on contact with the plate hit secret

INDEPENDENCE
righton’s Duke of York’s cinema lays claim to being the oldest British cinema in continuous use and is today known for showing films that are a little ‘out there’- the kind of thing we wouldn’t be able to see anywhere else in the city. One recent showing was of Ana Lily Amirpour’s debut, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night- the first Iranian, Vampire Western ever made! Obviously this is not a genre that looks to be brimming over with films any time soon but the film is a joyful mash-up. Full of stylised fragments that are prioritised over story and characters the film fails to compose a bigger picture but in its own way creates something far more beautiful instead. Set in the fictional Iranian ghost town of Bad City (the name nodding towards Frank Miller’s graphic novel Sin City) and shot in crisp black-andwhite, the film’s look exists in a twilight zone. Whilst it nods to the late 19th century’s ghost stories and early cinema, the film’s look also owes much to comic books and contemporary pop iconography. IranianAmerican writer-director Amirpour describes the exhilarating film as the ‘Iranian love-child of Sergio Leone and David Lynch, with Nosferatu as a babysitter’. You’ll note I have yet to mention the plot… largely because there isn’t one! A young man, handsome and well coiffed but a bit of a cad, is working hard to pay off his vintage convertible. Yet his father is a heroin addict with more debts than love for his son and the car is taken by a tattooed, drugdealing pimp as collateral. Our hero is then placed at the scene of a murder but, with the authorities notable only for their absence, it is the lawless he truly has to fear. This out of control town needs a saviour; the stranger with a murky past who wanders in and saves the day as in every Western before. What is unexpected is that this liberating angel should be a skateboarding, alienated, chador-wearing teenage girl! And possibly not entirely alive. The character shapeshifts as the film mutates around her, gleefully transforming to bask in the sheer pleasure of pulp. With influences spanning spaghetti westerns, graphic novels, horror films and the Iranian New Wave, the film creates a complex, interwoven web of genre, archetype and iconography that at once seems also effortless. A subversive intelligence brings together oxymoronic elements that bridge between cinema’s history and its modern incarnation, with only a few strays into the tiresomely meta. The film is at once a political parable and a lurid legend - either way, it’s sensational!

PALIN INTERESTING Michael Palin’s journey through his diaries ne of Britain’s best-loved comedians, Michael Palin, comes to Eastbourne’s Congress Theatre on Saturday 3 October as part of his one-man stage show The Thirty Years Tour, celebrating 30 years covered by his eventful diaries. During the course of his twohour show, Michael brings to life thirty extraordinary years, from the end of the 1960s when his first child, and a new series called Monty Python’s Flying Circus, took their first faltering steps, to the end of the 1990s when Python had become the most influential comedy team in the world and Michael a hugely successful television traveller. The diverse directions of his career will be illustrated by a rich and often rarely seen archive of film, video, photos and recordings. As forthright about failure as he is baffled by success, Michael shares the often hilarious, always honest and occasionally downright embarrassing experiences of a life that can't resist a challenge. Michael hopes that The Thirty Years Tour will focus attention on the importance of keeping diaries, and encourage people to do as he did, and start to keep an account of their daily life. “The attraction of a diary is that it remains in its own time. It reflects only what happened on that particular day. It doesn’t flatter and it isn’t distorted by what happened later. In that way it’s the most truthful record of real life. And it's your own life and nobody else's…” says Michael, who was made a CBE in 2000 and

OVER THE RAINBOW t’s taken several kilos of M&S prawns and two new cat beds, but Gilbert and George have finally forgiven us for taking part in Artists Open Houses this year. If you are suffering withdrawal symptoms, though, head out to Forest Row where – for the next two weekends until 21 June - Richard Heys will be opening his light-filled studio as part of the South East Open Studios event. Now in its 19th year, South East Open Studios is a notfor-profit artist-led organisation that allows the public to visit artists’ studios and workplaces, view their work and meet the artists in person. 322 artists and crafts people In the lap of Andromeda will be taking part across the South East this year. Originally from Yorkshire, Richard has lived in Sussex since 1997 where he finds inspiration from the landscape, literature and music. He works in acrylics and oils using various tools: squeegees (many of which he has made himself), brushes and sprays to create mysterious, multilayered paintings. At his open studio Richard will be showing paintings from his Richard Heys stunning ‘Gravity’s Rainbow’ series. In these, the artist explores colour polarities and the interplay between light and dark. He challenges himself to create paintings with presence - drawing you in and at the same time coming out to meet you. And if you are left wanting more, Richard is also one of the featured artists in our latest book – Art in Brighton 2015 – where his vibrant, abstract paintings make a fabulous splash that offers something new to the reader every time they look. His work is also Nature’s Way currently on show at Lewes’s Chalk Gallery, the Ashdown Gallery in Forest Row and at the Moreton Gallery in Moretonin-Marsh. For more details and opening times of South East Open Studios go to seos-art.org. www.artymagazines.com

Summer’s here and it’s time to throw your head back and laugh it up
ust because the sun is out and the beach is beckoning, it doesn’t mean that making the most of the summer should mean missing out on some fabulous comedy club nights around town. The weekend erupts on a regular basis over at Komedia, with Krater kicking off at 8pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, pitching up as the perfect place to relay that holiday feeling from the sun, sea and stones that occupy the daytime. This weekend sees Marcel Lucont headline proceedings, aka Alexis Dubus’ Gallic alter-ego, bringing pomposity, arrogance and a swarthy je ne sais quoi from across The Channel. You could be on holiday already. On Sunday, after spending the day sunning outside our testament to jolly royal weekends away, step inside the Brighton Dome complex itself and keep the good mood going with Katherine Ryan’s touring show, ‘Glam Role Model’. Regularly seen all over our TV screens, with her bitingly funny wit and observations, it’s good to sail close to the wind with this comedic talent from Canada. Frequently saying the things that have brought her publicised death threats and a killer comedy career, the Corn Exchange should be packed come night-time. And if you’re in the centre of town on Friday night, starting your weekend off with a bang and a pint, rushing to see the waves after a week’s work, then simply pootle on up to the Quadrant pub at 8pm to see the first in a series of Edinburgh previews from award-winning sketch group Casual Violence’s founder James Hamilton. Playing every fortnight throughout June and July, and joined each time by another sketch comic’s preview, these are works in progress but from minds that have been working in comedy for years. This opening night of the fitful of the ‘James Hamilton Is So Lonely’ run sees Hamilton joined by the marvellously funny Anna Morris. It’s also free. So sun and smile and roar with laughter this Summer. It’s that easy. www.komedia.co.uk/brighton brightondome.org www.facebook.com/events/1645328005689264/

The former Aussie Idol is back in the country of her birth he former Australian Idol contender has been carving out her own, leftfield indie-pop career since early fame beckoned. Do you consider yourself an Aussie or Brit-Aussie!? Good question! I love Australia, I'm proud to be from here, but I've travelled so much in the last 10 years that I really do just have love for lots of different cities and people. Global child! How do you now view the Australian Idol experience? Idol is really one of those things in my life that always makes me chuckle as I was 16 at the time, so I feel quite different now! I'm 25 now and I guess I was really lucky that my writing shone through in what I released after that. I was able to forge my own path despite everyone wanting to label me with 'Idol'. I felt for a really long time that I had to prove myself. But I really don't give a shit anymore. The main thing I think and care about in life is how to push into the unknown. It's hard to be honest and write about what turns you on, what scares you, what you don't want to look at, and because that is so hard to do it is valuable to people. Wah Ha is a great title for a song! Tell me about that. Wah Ha is just one of those words
T
that my mouth just made and it felt good so I didn't argue with it. It's more of a feeling, rather than a literal meaning. To me, it says: ' I don't care/whatever/this is how many fucks I give' type of thing. Haha! Tell me about your new album The new album is… I'm laughing because it's still in various stages of completion..! Maybe if you crossed 'Teardrop' by Massive Attack with a huge pop song like, 'All That' by Carly Rae Jepson, and then tinted that with a bit of dark electric folk like PJ Harvey, you'd get close… Yeh? Clear as mud? Do you get to play the UK often? Still have family here? So excited to be back, and yes I have family in Scotland, I'll be heading up to the West Coast to see my Gran and then we play three shows in Scotland. We'll be playing Brighton which will be great; my Mum and Dad lived in Steyning for a while so it's a bit of a special place for our family as well. I imagine the venues will be considerably smaller here... What chu tryin' to say?! Haha, nah it's true, it's been a while since I've played in the UK & Europe - it will be super cool to be playing these smaller venues, makes for a pretty 'real' experience for us and the audience! A good way to get acquainted again! Komedia, Mon 15 July, 7.30pm, £11

Black Is The Color Of My Voice, The Old Market, 28 May 2015★★★★★ Joe Fuller
pphia Campbell both wrote and starred in this brilliant one-woman show, playing and singing Nina Simone in a breathlessly moving, funny and human manner. Aside from having a superb, soulful voice (surely a prerequisite when emulating one of music’s most memorable), Campbell exuded real charisma and charm too, commanding the stage staggeringly well. She also nailed the more emotional moments, such as recounting her experiences with an abusive husband, gripping the audience while avoiding any cloying hint of melodrama. The performance elicited a standing ovation from the sold-out crowd, but just misses out on five stars here due to a slightly underwhelming finale. Campbell might have a classic in the making however, with a little narrative polishing. The Old Market, 28 May 2015 ★★★★★ Joe Fuller
jazz performers Billie Holiday and Lester Young. The narrative illustrated how two immensely troubled people with alcohol and narcotics problems found solace in the company and quirkiness of each other. Dahlberg’s Lester captured their pain and the depth of feeling beautifully with a melancholy warmth. His saxophone performance was confident and soulful throughout. McAteer’s voice delicately demanded the use of vibrato which showed the pain she was portraying; particularly during the famous ‘Strange Fruit’. She was able to effortlessly slip between breathy deep singing and a light, clean as glass tone. Possibly the performance could have been improved by fewer breaks in the set for the narrative as it sometimes felt as if the music spoke enough for itself. The Rialto Theatre, 31 May 2015 ★★★★★ Daisy Tompkins
A
Sh*t-faced Shakespeare A real gem, yet again, bringing Shakespeare to the masses with the heady scent of beer and sawdust from the Tudors, along with a classically trained chutzpah. The premise is known by now – a small talented cast perform a play from the Bard’s canon in an hour with one of their number considerably inebriated from the off. This was bawdy, risky, exhilarating and utterly magical. The sense of the ridiculous was heightened, the peril was true, love was lost and won – the conceit of the drunken player

worked delightfully but balanced beautifully as the plot of the play itself held the absolute spine of the show. Many try to bring access to Shakespeare by making it contemporary. This took us back to the fabulous mayhem of the bear pit and won more devotion to the folios with it. The Warren: Main House, 22 May 2015 ★★★★★ Victoria Nangle
My Friend Lester Framed by Billie Holiday’s famous exclamation at Lester Young’s funeral (unrepeatable here!), this performance sought to explain the confusing, elusive and tumultuous relationship between
A selection of Brahms’ German folksongs was a light opener, with mezzo-soprano Anna Huntley using a little too much vibrato for this reviewer’s taste. James Baileu’s sensitive piano backing was as assured and evocative as always however. Britten’s Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo featured some beautiful singing from tenor Robert Murray, alternating from soothing to soaring to devastating effect. Janáček’s ‘The Diary of One Who Disappeared’ is a dramatic tale of forbidden love that was movingly conveyed by everyone involved, including a nice touch of three haunting offstage voices creating an otherworldly feel in the church. The finale had everything: pounding, bracing piano playing and gutsy, loud singing from Murray. A nice performance that never truly transcended, but was moving nevertheless. St George’s Church, 21 May 2015 ★★★★★ Joe Fuller

TUESDAY 9 Me And My Guide Dog ITV1, 8pm For everyone who misses cute puppy videos and has exhausted YouTube, check out these little darlings. This two-part series follows a litter of pups from their moment of birth, through guide dog training and finally to that magical moment of meeting the blind person they will serve and protect. Adorable life-savers.
No Offence Channel 4, 9pm Well written and rather cheeky in a Brit-cop brutal dark humour kinda way. Deering is leading the manhunt through Manchester as the cleverness that is the police close in on the serial killer. In addition to this excitement, Joy and Spike (any better partnership of name has got to try hard!) discover a horrible slavery case.
Supernatural E4, 10pm Crikey! It’s the fight to end all fights. Well, it’s gotta be pretty impressive considering the amount of apocalypses these boys have averted. Dean does more of his ‘cross’ look as the Mark of Cain’s effects go up to 11. And no doubt Sam will do his ‘pained’ look as he and Dean and Castiel face down Metatron. Grr.

SUNDAY 14 Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell BBC1, 9pm You’d think if someone was known as the Gentleman they’d have a bit more of an awareness of why it’s not the done thing to mess with someone’s life utterly... and then do it some more. But no, this fella’s got his very own etiquette. One that Jonathan and Arabella really don’t benefit from.
Humans Channel 4, 9pm So this has been trailered for... like... forever! So it better be rather good. Set in a parallel present day where life-like humanoids are just another pricey household or industry accessory, a family acquire a lady version to help out. Thing is, will she cause more problems than she solves? Oil leaks, eh.
Ken Loach In Conversation With Cillian Murphy BBC4, 9pm It’s always good when the interviewer really knows what they’re talking about when they start grilling a talented artist. So having actor Cillian Murphy and director Ken Loach reunite and get to the nitty gritty of what motivates them, their humour, and more is an excellent notion!
