hat makes a good neighbour? I always thought that I was a reasonably good neighbour – don't have wild parties, sign for other people's packages and remember to pass them on, no suspicious patio bulges... Y'know. I've had marvellous neighbours I've gone out dancing with, and others who hid behind doors shuffling their feet whilst bullishly playing loud music. People thronged in our communal hallway at the ambush party that I knew nothing about and was still going on when I left the house to go to my Dad's... The next morning! I’ve also made good friends due to a spontaneously combusting paint pot in the basement flat that was in the process of being refurbished. That ventilation thing they tell you to do when you’ve got paint vapours – the reasons why are not a myth. Who knew? These days my neighbourhood lives quite symbiotically, and party boy did a runner owing my poor landlord neighbour rent, as well as various other debtors that still send post through our door. We've had the odd blip – like when I forgot the bath and it overflowed. Luckily the downstairs people just told me to calm down and have my bath after I stomped down in a frantic state to check on them and their plasterwork. But for the most part I'm very happy with who I live around. Even the students across the road only seem to play tunes I love when they throw their seasonal end of term shindigs. So when, like last night, I suddenly realise it's a bit too late in the evening to be shifting sofas to find that lost knitting needle, I am grateful. Eternally grateful that even though we all live on top of each other, we do it with patience. Thanks folks. And I promise not to do it again if you don’t. At least for a bit.

CELEB CITY with Jo Brooks All the news on Peter Andre’s Coffee Club, festivals and more!
BRIGHTON GOES WILD
ews reaches us that the Brighton branch of Peter Andre’s New York Coffee Club chain has closed down. The boarded up store on North Street is a sad sight after the exuberant launch of the coffee shop back in August 2012. To be fair, given our thriving coffee shop culture it is a very tough market in Brighton, so presumably the competition was all a bit too much for Pete. Fans of coffee and Peter Andre needn’t panic as the East Grinstead branch of the New York Coffee Club remains open on London Road of the West Sussex town. Otherwise they have a pop-up shop which is regularly on the road. Check their Twitter for more information about their whereabouts. But for now Brighton says goodbye to Andre’s coffee. Meanwhile, over in the red corner, Katie Price has changed her hair. In a recent Instagram post she was pictured rocking a blonde barnet after undergoing a transformation from dark brown. Make of that what you will.

ith the festival season upon us, it was great to hear the inaugural Wild Life Festival at Shoreham Airport was a success with thousands of festival goers enjoying the two day Sussex festival. Curated by Disclosure and Rudimental the fledgling festival did suffer a disappointment when the amazing Sam Smith had to cancel last minute due to undergoing vocal chord surgery but by all accounts that did not stop the 35,000 revellers in Shoreham having a blast. Plans are now afoot for the dream team of Rudimental and Disclosure to build on this success with more Wild Life events. Our advice boys? Double the portaloos; always a good plan.

ANDREW KAY WHAT PRICE ART Some day my plinth will come othing starts tongues wagging more than the cost of art. Auctions rack up almost unbelievable prices for works that fall under the hammer and the world gasps with incredulity. Heaven forfend that anyone might suggest that a sum of public money might be spent on a piece of public art, something that might well be provocative or simply decorative, the tongues will start to wag. “Just imagine what that money could have been better spent on.” I’m not going to list the suggestions that already spring to mind, you all know what they are because I believe that Latest readers are universally well educated, informed and intelligent. I woke up today to see on FB that there are plans to fill an empty plinth on Hove seafront. I knew immediately that it would be followed by lots of jabber about public spending and wasted money and cynicism, and it was – at 6 am. I didn’t join in. I love public art and for many years it kept me alive as my father was involved in restoring, renovating and repairing public works of art, from cathedrals to tiny churches, from small memorials to massive carved stone edifices. He was an artist of the highest order,

although he very much thought of himself as a craftsman. I rather despair of the fact that the word ‘craft’ has become debased and now, in my view should be read as ‘hobby’. Not that there is anything wrong with hobbies per se, not in the least, but please don’t ask me to view your ‘craft’ if it is little more advanced than that ancient kid’s toy Fuzzy Felt! As we enter a second term of tory rule let’s be very aware that but for a few MPs, the arts are pretty dismissable. Art education has been sidelined so often in the last few years that it really is becoming the domain of foreign students or the offspring of the well heeled. Now if this continues our arts will become even rarer and probably more obscure and challenging. I don’t want that, I want to see works of intrigue and of beauty on the streets and in our

I watched with fascination the Channel 4 series in which Grayson Perry created amazing portraits of a fascinating group of people. He may be better known in the tabloids as the cross-dressing potter, but my word the man has the most perceptive mind, creative skills and the ability to draw. You will seldom find the mass media pointing that out but there is nothing new there, how many of the great artists of the last few hundred years were scorned for the free nature of their work. Turner was ridiculed, Picasso and too many more to argue the case here. So what will we get on that empty plinth? I dread to think really, because my fear is that Brighton and Hove remains a city that is far more ready to sally forth and say no than it is to rise up and say yes. If I mentioned Gehry would anyone agree? A few I am sure, but too late. I give full marks to the team that realised Adrian Bunting’s vison for an open air theatre and all those who got behind that. Brighton & Hove Buses the only way to travel This week: The South Downs & beautiful villages
he photo below of Saturn has been taken by the Director of PACA’s Astronomical Society (Dean Gonciarz, who is also our most valued Science Technician). It is an interesting month for stargazing with the planets Venus and Jupiter converging, so that on 1st July they will be half a degree apart. Ade Ashford in ‘Astronomy Now’ describes the event as follows: “Over to the West-Northwest at dusk during June, a gathering is taking place between the two brightest ‘stars’ in the Northern Hemisphere sky, one that even casual stargazers cannot fail to notice. The ‘stars’ in question are, of course, planets (Venus (the brighter of the two) and Jupiter) and the stage is set for a spectacular denouement on the last day of June as the pair pass within a fraction of a degree. By 19th June, observers with 7×50 or similar widefield binoculars will be able to see both planets in the same field of view”. It was perfect stargazing skies for the camping weekend we went on recently at a beautiful spot in Sussex, called Dernwood Farm. We go every year with my son’s junior class and as I looked out at the array of different tents and families cooking over their campfires it made me appreciate just how far we have come as a human race in designing and developing building materials. Essentially though, most building material (such as concrete and glass) require the resource sand. Sand has by now become the most widely consumed natural resource on the planet, after fresh water. Sand from deserts cannot be used for most purposes in the construction industry, as wind erosion over time forms round grains that do not bind well in making concrete; only sand and gravel deposits from the sea and riverbeds will do. Sand resources are therefore not infinite and sand wars have already begun. In India there is a ‘Sand Mafia’ where people illegally mine for sand.
etrobus routes 271 and 273 combine to form an hourly service on most of the route, Monday to Saturday. Route 271 also operates on Sundays – for times please visit www.metrobus.co.uk. They head north up to Crawley but they pass though glorious Sussex Downland along the way, passing through ancient villages and places of interest. For a break from the bustle of the city these two routes will take you out to the calm tranquility of the South Downs. The services can be picked up in Brighton at Churchill Square and the Old Steine. So what’s on the 271 and 273?

South Downs Way and National Park The country’s newest National Park can be accessed using the 271 and 273 near Clayton. Get off the bus at the Jack and Jill pub, a walker’s pub, and follow the footpaths up to the Jack and Jill windmills and pick up the South Downs Way as it goes off in an easterly direction. The easiest point of access for the South Downs Way heading west is at Pyecombe, get off the bus at the Pyecombe Garage stops. To the west of the Jack and Jill pub is Wolstonbury Hill, this is not on the South Downs Way but is a National Trust site with an iron age hill fort situated on it.
Ditchling - on Route 271, Sundays only The pretty village of Ditchling is situated in the South Downs Park and dates back to Saxon times. There are two pubs, the White Horse and the Bull plus independent tea rooms. Ditchling Museum is also worth a visit. Ditchling Beacon is close by. Ditchling Beacon is one of the highest points on the South Downs and sits on the South Downs Way.
Washbrooks Farm, Hurstpierpoint - Route 273 only Washbrooks Family Farm is in Hurstpierpoint and is served by Route 273 only. The farm is family run and there are plenty of animals for everyone to see. There are special events throughout the year so keep an eye on their website: www.washbrooks.co.uk.
Nymans At Handcross village, near Haywards Heath, Routes 271 and 273 stop near the entrance to National Trust-owned Nymans Garden. The garden is famous for its summer flower borders with June and July being the best months.

ou know you’re in safe hands with Ian McKellen, although his performance as Sherlock Holmes in this week’s ‘Mr Holmes’ might divide some fans. Many have gotten used to Benedict Cumberbatch’s rapid fire wit and intelligence, whereas this Holmes is 93 years old and retired. Living on the Dover coast, Holmes’ mind isn’t what it once was but he revisits an old case with the help of his housekeeper’s young son Roger (British actor Milo Parker). The setup for the film is promising. Based on a 2005 novel called ‘A Slight Trick Of The Mind’ by Mitch Cullin, ‘Mr Holmes’ is sort of a fake biopic where we see the real Holmes as opposed to Watson’s fictional version. At one point for example he waves off the stories as “penny dreadfuls with an elevated prose style”. The film isn’t all rueful ponderings however, with Holmes investigating the unsolved case that forced him into retirement. One can imagine that McKellen will revel in having such a rich character to delve into. There’s also the brilliant Laura Linney playing his housekeeper and a score from Carter Burwell (the Coen brothers’ musical-maestro-in-chief). The reviews have been overwhelmingly positive so far (at the time of going to press it sits on 100% on rottentomatoes.com) so this one is well worth checking out this weekend. Tim Robey of the Telegraph writes that “McKellen, a rummager par excellence, goes to town here like a one-man band playing all the greatest hits... his performance has a rich musicality”. Special mention must also go to ‘Jurassic World’. Although it was out last week I haven’t had a chance to see it yet! As someone who grew up in the ‘90s, ‘Jurassic Park’ was one of my most watched videos with friends and family (along with ‘Terminator 2’). It was a thrilling blockbuster, an original, exciting story and laden with great performances (a wonderfully wry Goldblum and the loud one from ‘Seinfeld’ for example). The special effects have arguably never been bettered in terms of their real look due to the use of both models and CGI. Although this one is bound to have more CGI and indeed goes against my preference for originality (although the original was based on a book), it is intriguing for another reason: Chris Pratt. The action hero rise of Pratt is one of the most refreshing tales in recent Hollywood history. Exuding charisma and charm in the fantastic sitcom 'Parks And Recreation' (one to watch for fans of '30 Rock' or the American version of 'The Office'), Pratt then secured a role on 'Guardians Of The Galaxy'. Buffing up and slimming down for this part, Pratt nailed the sensitive, funny and slightly strange Peter Quill while also demonstrating real action hero mettle when things got all gung-ho. I’m looking forward to seeing him tackle Jurassic World employee Owen, and Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian writes that he has “run riot” so it seems like he’s done a good job. Could we have the next Harrison Ford on our hands? Here’s to hoping! For more great films, check the listings for Latest TV’s film review show, PostFeature. off the whole lot, even though I was full to bursting. Fortunately for both of us we are in possession of pudding stomachs. Miss C had the Kent strawberries, dark chocolate mille feuille and beetroot marshmallow. She liked it and praised the quality of the strawberries but made little mention of the beetroot marshmallow. Beetroot and marshmallow are so on trend but I suspect that she didn’t think this union was particularly memorable. I think I did much better with the Yorkshire rhubarb, elderflower sorbet, raspberry coulis and fennel

The delights of Glyndebourne or many years I have been lucky enough to be able to go to Glyndebourne and enjoy some of the best performances of operas that one might hope to find anywhere in the world. Glyndebourne is a gem and if you look at this week’s stage page you will see that it is not solely for the rich. The operas are of course the main reason for attending but you do have to soak up the experience, soak on occasion being the operative word. The picnic is synonymous with Glyndebourne but the English weather being what it is you can find yourself huddling for shelter. That said there are far more places to shelter than in the old days. I do like to wander around and review the picnics that have been laid out. Some are impressive but there’s an awful lot of supermarket salads and dips these days. I prefer to dine in one of the three restaurants and for the recent production of Poliuto I took my dearest friend the divine Miss C to the Middle and Over Wallop. No idea what it means, I must ask, but they certainly know how to cater for a large audience with a limited time in which to dine. To say that the operation runs like clockwork would hint at there being a mechanical, almost military atmosphere, but far from it. The mood in the room is relaxed, elegant and rather jolly. There may be someone behind the scenes cracking a whip, but you don’t see it. Your food, pre-ordered, arrives on time and where it is meant to be, it is piping hot. Miss C started with watermelon gazpacho with feta and grape jelly.

No wet bottoms from dining al fresco It was very pretty and she loved it, even declaring that she was going to copy the idea at home. I chose the home smoked duck, pickled chanterelle, almonds and a honey sumac dressing. I’m not sure why because I am no great fan of smoked food but this proved to be rather delicately smoked and unlike a lot of smoked fowl it was very succulent. It was generous too in fact! Miss C moved on to a main of pork belly with boulangère potato, onions three ways and an apple brandy jus. She loved it, the pork was properly cooked to a melting tenderness and the potatoes scored a huge hit. I thought it
lacked a little colour on the plate myself, but that’s just me. I went all butch for my main course and had the fillet of beef, slow braised shin pie, horseradish mash, summer vegetables and a green olive & truffle sauce. sherbert. I loved it, it was pretty and packed with lots of lovely textures and flavours – in particular the fennel sherbet which I suspected might be a variant on sorbet but was indeed the classic childhood sweet. I would have been very happy to sit through the final act with a bag of it on my knee and a stick of liquorice to dip in it– although I am sure our neighbours would have hated that. I drank one glass of red, rather good, and enough if you don’t want to be drowsy through the final act. I finished with coffee, Miss M does not take caffeine, and we opened the little box of chocolates. Only then did she express disappointment. She is a chocolate afficionado and found them lacking, I thought they were okay, that final hit of sugar before the oncoming drama. But full marks for them all – and no wet bottoms from dining al fresco. www.diningatglyndebourne.com

A CRACKPOT ENSEMBLE The music of ‘My Accomplice’
ith its soundtrack launch party at Latest MusicBar this Thursday, writer-director Charlie Weaver Rolfe looks back on how the songs became part of the story. “One of the reasons I always wanted to make a film was so that I could choose the music, and the first draft of ‘My Accomplice’ had much of its prospective soundtrack written into the script, much of it material for which we’d never have got the rights. It also included several songs as live performances by Bob Wants His Head Back, with introductions by lead singer Nadwa (AKA Nadia Strahan), conceived as a kind of cabaret Greek Chorus: a crackpot ensemble of musician-performers and masters of disguise and surprise, on a mission to play every stage in the city. Basically the A-Team as reimagined by a talented group of middle-aged Brightonians who really ought to know better and indeed probably do, but why interrupt the fun by asking? To be honest, the whole second half of this wasn’t ever written down or explained to the band. In fact, from “a crackpot ensemble” on, it’s an entirely retrospective invention. But still, it’s fair to say of The Bob (as they have never been known): If you book them, they will come. And if you don’t book them, they will probably come anyway. Which it’s important to remember while you are trying to book them, as everything up until that moment feels less like The A-Team and

more like herding cats. Naturally we exploited this “nogig-too-small, no-fee-too-nonexistent” mentality to the full during the shooting of ‘My Accomplice’ and have continued to do so ever since. The same applies in varying degrees to the
A low-budget shoot isn’t made easier by a party to organise every few days other bands who appear in the film: Transformer, The Duke of Burgundy, Jo Ema, all of them came and played in locations across the city for the purposes of filming them and the people dancing to them. It’s hard to remember now why there was quite such a regular need to do this. A low-budget shoot isn’t made any easier by a party to organise every few days, and as with the extensive filming of seagulls and benches (some might even say excessive), a substantial proportion of this material was lost to the cutting room floor. But while the idiosyncrasies of my directorial vision could not always be honoured in the finished film, the music remains at the heart of ‘My Accomplice’ and is key to how it tells its story. This is after all a film about Brighton as well as a film about falling in love
– you may question the benches, quibble at the seagulls (some of them suspiciously humanlooking), but when Transformer tear the place apart at an allnight fancy dress garden party, I’m confident we hit the mark. In fact this was the moment during the shoot when myself and producer Martyn Holmes suddenly knew that we had a film – because the neighbours all stood at the next-door windows were texting Martyn, whose garden it was, to say thank you for a brilliant night. Transformer, Bob Wants His Head Back and Hayley Ross will be

them. It's amazing how many people go out of their way to be offended by what you're saying. There is also a group of people who believe that misrepresenting what you say is a weapon of debate. I hate wilful misconstruction generally, but I'm even less of a fan of it when it's done to me. There are loads of people, too, who are intellectually vain and want to regurgitate what they've just read. It's not evil, but it's not for me.” The comedian proceeds to reflect that, even though he still has his provocative moments, overall he has mellowed as the years have passed. “I'm not as ferociously angry as I was. I've now figured out the stuff that was making me angry. For example, political debate doesn't make me mad anymore because I've seen through it. ‘That politician didn't do what
HUNTER BLATHERER
Thoughtful, provocative, a perpetual outsider and remarkably entertaining with it, Reginald D Hunter is back at the Brighton Dome with a new show and fresh barriers to push he acclaimed comedian Reginald D Hunter has recently been on an epic road trip from North Carolina to New Orleans documenting the 150-year history of American popular song for a new three-part BBC2 series entitled ‘Reginald D Hunter's Songs of the South’. In New Orleans, he got to interview the blues legend Dr John. Reginald takes up the story. “Dr John asked me, 'What do you do?' I told him I was a standup, and he replied, 'So you're a kicks man. It's a very important job, providing kicks for people.' Is ‘kicks man’ how I'd describe myself? It is now! I am hereby christened A Man of Kicks.” Man of Kicks is a very good title for a comedian who has been furnishing British audiences with thrills for nearly two decades now. During that time, Reginald has become one of the best loved and most in demand performers in the country. Known for his distinctive take on subjects such as race and sexuality, he is often brutally honest and is sometimes viewed as controversial. However, his comedy is always meticulously thought out, and he has never been afraid to confront challenging issues head on, even when he turns his attention to his own beliefs. He is appealingly generous with off-the-cuff jokes. At one point, for instance, he laughs that, “Whenever a politician says, 'I want to spend

more time with my family,' I think, 'Somebody's been sending pictures of themselves...'” Coming back to stand-up after a period abroad making his TV series, Reginald is relishing the chance to appear on the British stage once again. “I love stand-up,” says the comic, the broad grin on his face confirming as much. “Every time something new works on stage, it's definitely a great high. It's really satisfying.” Reginald reckons that there is another positive aspect to performing stand-up. “It makes me smarter. I spend a lot of time alone in hotels and airports. When you're locked away, you do a lot of thinking and come back smarter.” The comedian loves to push the boundaries on stage. “I remember as a boy watching Richard Pryor and thinking, 'That's brilliant, but don't stop there. Go further!' Now I try to create the sort of stand-up show I'd like to see. And then take it further.” When he does take it further, of course, Reginald has in the past sometimes been accused of courting controversy. But the comic dismisses the charge with his trademark easy charm. “I mostly work in front of overprivileged white people, and they're easily shocked by things they don't already believe – ‘how dare he espouse that view!’ “I get a sense of contrived outrage from

It's amazing how many people go out of their way to be offended by what you're saying. he said he was going to do? He's surely the first politician in history to do that!’” A man who possesses a wonderful way with words, Reginald continues that, “It's bad to be angry. Anger is very powerful, but it’s toxic. It'll burn you out if you fly on it for too long. All your emotions are your children. If you leave them in the basement, eventually they're going to grow up and hate you.” Reginald has made very well-regarded appearances on TV shows such as ‘QI’, ‘8 out of 10 Cats’, ‘Would I Lie to You?’, ‘Live at The Apollo’ and ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’. But he has proved especially popular as a guest on ‘Have I Got News For You’. The comic, who has a very British grasp of irony, explains why. “Because I don't say much on that show! People say to me, 'I know what you're doing on Have I Got News For You. I admire your technique. You sit there looking totally uninterested... and then you pounce! It's absolutely brilliant. I've never seen such a technique before on a panel show. It's unprecedented’.” Reginald closes by underlining that he has a particular affection for British audiences. “That's why I'm here,” asserts the comedian, who hails originally from Georgia. “Britain is both my real home and my comedy home. British audiences like being surprised comedically. The problem with Americans is that they just want you to get to the funny part. “British people will come up to you afterwards and say, 'I wasn't sure about the punchline, but the bits before that were extraordinary'. There should be an organisation called the British Anoraks of Comedy. It's very nice to get that response. In my head, the person I'm writing my shows for is British. If you make it as a comedian in Britain, then you can branch out to the colonies!” Reginald D Hunter: The Man Who Attempted To Do As Much As Such, Sunday 28 June, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, £25/23, 01273 709709 , brightondome.org Photo credit: Kash Yusaf

APPLE WATCH WOE o, my lovely new Apple Watch is on its way. And how excited am I, on a scale of one to 10? Ooh, I’d say approximately zero. When I say it’s “on its way”, you see, I mean it’s on its way back to Apple for a refund. And it clearly won’t be alone on that journey, bless it, because the courier who came to collect it said he’d already picked up loads of them. Maybe they’ll sit in the back of his van, these sadly unloved little devices, having a synchronised digital sing-song to cheer themselves up. They can actually do that, you know, these clever bits of kit. No, of course they can’t. Don’t be daft. To be fair, I only had one real problem with my Apple Watch. Namely, the fact that I hated it. I hated its ropey battery life. I hated trying to operate its tiny, fiddly touchscreen, an experience even more irritating than watching TV’s Matt Dawson. I hated the fact that I couldn’t wear it in the bath or when I went swimming (or, since it largely ceases to function after 18 hours, when I went to bed).
S
Show me a new gadget and I’ll convince myself I need it I hated the way the apps took ages to load, and that when they did they were mostly just feeble versions of the proper ones on the actual iPhone (which still had to be with me at all times if this watch was to do its job properly). Oh, and laughably old-fashioned nitwit granddad twerp that I am, I hated that it wouldn’t tell me the bloody time. OK, that last one’s not strictly true. It’s just that the watchface itself remains blank most of the time, to conserve that stupid battery, so you have to make a point of moving your wrist to make it illuminate. Simple enough, you reckon? Not from my own experience. It effectively meant relearning the way I glance to check the time. I’m 55, why the hell should I have to do that? I am, I’ll admit, something of an early adopter when it comes to technology – ‘early adopter’, of course, being tech-speak for ‘sucker’. Show me a new gadget, doesn’t matter how ridiculous, and somehow I’ll convince myself I need it. Specs that squirt your eyes with Optrex every 30 minutes? Sold! A toaster that doubles as a musical trouser press? At long last! A Sellotape dispenser that gives a five-day weather forecast in Spanish? Why didn't I think of that?! I’m still, despite this latest experience, a total Apple geek. But when my refund arrives, I’ll be a bit more picky about my next purchase from them. My Apple bluetooth pants, of course, are already on order. Mike Ward is the TV Critic of the Daily Star and the TV Editor of the Daily Express Saturday magazine. If you’re looking for an excuse to visit, here’s an interesting proposition. An exhibition by two painters who first met 20 years ago when Ann Johnson joined a class at Eastbourne College of Art and Technology where Anne de Geus was the tutor. They have remained in contact ever since, working regularly together. Showing at the Hop Gallery in the Star Brewery building, ‘Drawn to Paint’ is a fascinating insight into how the duo source and develop their work. They sometimes use similar objects as a starting point, occasionally painting from each other’s drawings. It demonstrates how individual interpretation produces distinctly different paintings and is particularly compelling for nature lovers as much of the inspiration derives from surrounding landscape and gardens. From 20th June until 5th July. Meanwhile, at Farley Farm Gallery in Chiddingly, catch up with the latest (and very collectable work) of the irrepressible Mark Glassman. His recent paintings have been inspired by the local scenery in Bishopstone, Seaford and Newhaven, where the artist finds continual fascination from the contrasts between fields, sea, harbour, and brick and beach. The gallery is in the grounds of Farley Farm House – which is suffused with the spirit of its former surrealist occupants photographer Lee Miller and artist Roland Penrose. The 2015 Glyndebourne Tour offers a diverse line-up of Mozart, Donizetti and Handel lyndebourne might seem like an expensive fantasy to some, and it is indeed an occasion that can cost more than your average night at the theatre. But trust me when I say that it is so much more than an average night of anything. Glyndebourne is a magical experience where one can enjoy opera performed at the very highest level. All that said it need not be an expensive night out as there are many more seats than in the past and at far more affordable prices. It is always worth looking online to see what is available up to the very last minute. Add to this that booking is now open for the 2015 Glyndebourne Tour which boasts a diverse lineup of world-class operas from Mozart, Donizetti and Handel and at what can be described as excellent value prices. Now in its 47th year, Glyndebourne Tour will present three main stage productions, two of which transfer straight from the 2015 Glyndebourne Festival where they premiere this summer. An elegant new production of Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail, which opened to sell-out audiences at the 2015 Glyndebourne Festival on 13 June, heads the line-up. Among the cast is the up-and-coming American tenor Benjamin Bliss, currently a member of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at The Metropolitan Opera in New York. It’s a diverse season which I hope will offer much to enjoy for audiences of all musical and theatrical tastes.” Off stage, cinemas in selected Tour locations will be screening Glyndebourne’s five star production of Benjamin Britten’s Billy Budd, a production which, because of its scale, Glyndebourne is unable to take on the road. An all-male piece which presents the tense and stifling atmosphere on board a British man of war during the Napoleonic wars, the production was described by The Stage as ‘a masterpiece of emotional ambiguity’. During the 2015 Tour, Glyndebourne will once again offer subsidised tickets to schools across the UK to attend fulllength, fully-staged opera.
Handel’s oratorio Saul, which tells the well-known biblical tale of the first King of Israel’s love and loathing for his eventual successor, David. Directed by the brilliant, provocative Australian director, Barrie Kosky, it features Henry Waddington in the title role opposite the South African countertenor Christopher Ainslie as David. The third production is a revival of an opulent period staging of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale; an acclaimed production which debuted on the Glyndebourne Tour in 2011. All three main stage productions have a central role for the Glyndebourne Chorus, an ensemble with a well-earned reputation for showcasing the soloists of tomorrow. BRAKES FUNNY AFIELD Take a short train journey to some of the best comedy around this week ife feels so much more Enid Blyton in the Summer (minus the period racism) when you’re speeding along through the countryside to explore a little further afield than your usual backyard. As much as Winter is about hunkering down and bedding in for hibernation, it’s well worth checking out the listings of a few venues a little further afield for a day out, dinner and a show. This week I would recommend those things happen in Worthing. Two very funny and very different comics are in Worthing this week, with the caustic wit and razor sharp brilliance of Katherine Ryan in town on Wednesday at the Connaught Theatre, followed hotly by the poetic, poignant and whimsical thoughts of Alex Horne. Horne’s show is fully formed and was Foster’s Comedy Award nominated last year at the Edinburgh Fringe, meaning that this is the business. Promising something akin to MB Games’ eternal favourite ‘Mousetrap’ and that clever Honda ad that brought all of the bits of a thing together to make a... well, a car – this is the show that Horne has wanted to make for the last ten years and his wing and a prayer in putting it together with precision has already paid off with critics and audiences alike. Ryan’s show is pop-culture obsessed and a unique perspective on many things, from the Canadian on the world’s first crack-smoking mayor to well-publicised death threats to Ryan herself. It’s a mad old world we live in, and sometimes the sanest thing to do is simply point that out. Plus, of course, there’s all the other fun things to do in Worthing in the middle of the week. Never done it? Well, maybe that’s the reason to start now. After all, what’s the point of simply doing the same thing all the time. Surely the point of comedy is to bring a little (or a big) change to the old routine. Alex Horne: Monsieur Butterfly, Thursday 25 June show has been rescheduled to Wednesday 23 September; Katherine Ryan: Glam Role Model, Wednesday 24 June, Connaught Theatre, worthingtheatres.co.uk

supporting Electric Soft Parade at the Pavillion Theatre, we'd spent three years trying to make it and we'd run out of energy. After that, I was a bit lost and pissed off and took it out on my guitar and wrote a bunch of tunes that became the first Brakes record. Is it true that the brothers White (Alex and Tom of the aforementioned Electric Soft Parade) saw you play solo and suggested forming a band? I was opening for The Lonesome Organist at what was Palmers Bar (just down from the old ice skating rink), and Tom and Alex had come along for support. They came up afterwards and said that the tunes needed a band. I think they rang Marc Beatty (bassist) after I'd finished (he was working at Mockingbird Studios) and after the gig we went there and jammed… Brakes... why that name? My friend Matt Eaton had seen a guy on a bike, tearing down Trafalgar Street, screaming: "I've got no brakes!" I thought, 'well everyone needs some brakes every now and then', and there it was. Three albums, all great, why did the band end? I wish I had pronounced my Ts and Ps better on the second record, but you can't go back, can you.
