23 – 29 JUNE

ot this coming weekend but next weekend sees the arrival once again of Paddle Round The Pier. I love that we are the only people to have two piers and even when one of them is a (rather beautiful and possibly photographed more than Kim Kardashian’s backside) wreck, we still find a way to celebrate the fact in as rambunctious a way as possible. I’m doing a little dance at how determined we are to have fun. It’s also got a great attitude towards the community at large, by bringing a buffet of water, street and urban sports to the table with try-out sessions and demonstrations abounding for even the most meek of parkour aspiring kids. A lot has been said about the inactivity of the nation, about how our youth sits on a sofa in from of a TV set and shoots people sitting on other sofas on the other side of the country. But we live on the coast and as such, come the warm weather suddenly find our youth thronging to the seafront and perfectly happy to go and splash about. I’m from the school of thought that it’s far too easy to get bored whilst exercising, whereas it’s much more enjoyable to inadvertently do some exercise whilst having fun. Which brings me back to Paddle Round The Pier. As well as showcasing all of the great new activities you can start ‘accidentally’ exercising with and how to climb high car parks in a single bound, there’s also the brilliance that are the races from pier to pier. If London has it’s ‘boat’ race down a river, its Oxbridge graduates should test their mad rowing skills against the waves breaking off two piers and the Sussex coast. Awesome to watch and cheer on! My especial favourite being the ‘Paddle Something Unusual’ race, in which a few years ago friends of mine saw their inflatable palm tree boat die a magnificent death. With this many treats in store, plus a music stage and food, I’m sure I’ll see you there.

ANDREW KAY SPRING CLEAN To dust or not to dust

M

uch as I love working for a magazine there is an occassional downside, not often I confess but once in a while I read the competitions and resent that I am not allowed to enter. This happened very recently when we had a prize of a full deep clean of your home. Oh how I wanted that, I wanted to let someone in in the morning, leave for the day and find everything spick and span on my return. I’m not an unclean person, far from it, I do like things done properly but I am untidy. I like things in order, that’s the Virgo in me, but the Aquarian in me is far more devil may care and it gives me such internal conflict. I do crazy things like have my vast selection of ties, bow ties and cravattes sorted by colour. My shorts are the same, plain colours, stripes, patterns and finally the outrageous Hawaiian ones that I avoid in the sumer months. Suits and trousers are treated in the same way, formal at one end of the rail and casual at the other – jeans and shorts are folded and kept in a drawer. The kitchen is similarly organised but I will spare you the detail as I am sure you can imagine that it is always well stocked with a fine variety of the commonplace and the exotic. When it comes to my vast collections of stuff though I am far less regimental and tend to group things for effect. You will find muddles of paintings that I think work together, groups of ceramics that make sense to me if to no one else and more glass than any sensible person ever needs to own. I might have guessed that

having grown up in St Helens, the original home of Pilkington Glass that eventually I would fall under its spell – and I have. I have some Chance ware, it’s delicate and striking, but the major part of the collection is Sklo Union with a bit

With in excess of fifty pieces to date, not including the ceramics, they do present a cleaning challenge of Whitefriars thrown in. I think it looks rather good but I can see that it’s not to everyone’s taste. On a recent visit my friend Mr M shrieked at the sight and called

gathers and holds the dust – and with an excess of fifty pieces to date, not including the ceramics, they do present a cleaning challenge. I think they would aslo present a challenge to any cleaning person who took on the task, to me they are precious and I would no doubt have to convey that. Any poor soul would live in dread of damaging a piece – and if you are to clean properly it would be impossible to avoid going near them as they are quite literally everywhere. I was lucky enough to know Quentin Crisp when I was a student. He said this “There is no need to do any housework at all. After the first four years the dirt doesn't get any worse.” Witty enough but so not true, after a few weeks the dust in my home diminishes the sparkle of my lovely coloured glass, gems that I have picked up for small change in boot fairs and junk shops. I know that the solution is of course to go the route of a low sofa, lamp and wine rack but it simply isn’t for me. I love the clutter, the explosions of colour, shape and form, I like to take them down from time to time and move them around, I take pleasure in each new piece and as a consequence I will enter my latter years in dusty bliss.

SPONSORED BY them all dust gatherers. It gave him a headache. He prefers the minimal look, a low sofa, a lamp and a wine rack. That’s him! He was right about the dust though, my how that faceted glass

ame Of Thrones, to me, is like beetroot. Tried it once, hated it. And yes, I know that's a shocking admission, what with me being a professional TV critic and that, but you'd hate me to lie to you. The only time I've watched ‘Game of Thrones’, which must have been, ooh, a year or so ago, was for a review I'd been asked to do on Channel 5's ‘The Wright Stuff’ (a show where I stand in for the regular TV reviewer if he's on holiday, and if the next 734 critics on the producer's standby list are also busy).

I watched one episode, don't ask me which, and I didn't like it. Didn't like it, didn't care. Well, actually, I did care, I still do, but only in the sense that my wholesale ignorance of the current Greatest TV Show Ever™ makes me a social leper, particularly when I'm in the company of self-

I get more pleasure from a throwaway line on Corrie than from hours of ‘important’ drama

satisfied box set snobs. These people are forever raving about ‘Game Of Thrones’: ‘bold, rich, sumptuous, epic storytelling, puts mainstream TV fodder to shame’, blah blah blah. All I can do is shrug, or check the football scores, or try to change the subject ("Ooh, look, guys, a horse wearing flippers..."). My problem with ‘Game Of Thrones’ (based on that whole hour I had to spend watching an actual episode, plus various gushing articles I've flicked through before losing the will to live) is that it's just too BIG. Too much stuff going on. Too many characters with odd names. Too many cloaks. Oddlynamed characters, and bloody cloaks, make me think of Tolkien, and I've hated that stuff ever since it was forced on me at school. But the bigness of this show, that's my main problem. Big is something I just don't do. I'm simply not programmed that way. It's why, for example, I find 3D cinema blockbusters a complete turnoff. It's why I'd rather watch a band in a tiny club than a vast arena. It's why, as an Albion fan (and do keep this to yourself ) I had far happier times at Withdean than I've ever had at the Amex. And it's why I get more pleasure from a witty throwaway line on Corrie than I'd ever get from endless hours of ‘important’ drama. ‘Game Of Thrones’ fans will, I'm sure, think I'm mad, or a moron, probably both, and insist I'm missing out on a life-enhancing experience. I dare say they're right. But answer me this. If a single question stood between them and winning a fortune on the National Lottery quiz ‘Who Dares Wins’, how many Rovers Return barmaids could they name? Exactly. I rest my case. o flippin’ ho. Such are the incongruities of magazine publishing scheduling, the Dane and I spent the hottest days of the year so far shooting images for a Christmas magazine. Sweltering in front of a roaring fire. Maintaining energy levels with stale stollen and gingerbread. Watching the faces of child models crumble as they realise the beautifully wrapped presents are fake, the stockings are stuffed with bubblewrap, and no they can’t take the toys home. But conjuring up the spirit of Christmas in June is nothing compared with the feat of naturalistic planting that has resulted in the sensational Sussex Prairie Garden at Morlands Farm near Henfield. So we were excited to hear from one of the garden’s artists in residence, Tom Barker about a new exhibition ‘Prairie Spirits’, inspired by the garden and examining human frailty and the cycle of life. Tom studied at Goldsmiths, but chose an alternative lifestyle that eventually led to working in television and theatre. Now he's returned to explore the world through fine art, and his mixed media environmental installation uses found objects and photography to explore and challenge perceptions of life from the perspective of a child, dreaming of his home being taken over by the Prairies as he sleeps. While surreal and haunting, it is also a beautiful and moving study of our place in this world. The show also features Tom's mother's and sister's photographic based work. Now in her ninetieth year, Jill Staples is a photographer who experiments with alternative processes and presentations. Her ethereal and fleeting images encourage a reflective contemplation. Tom’s sister Alice graduated from Chelsea Art College and works as an art psychotherapist. Her work is informed by Buddhism, her images are pared down to the essence of experiencing natural forms. Sussex Prairie has been described as ‘one of the most exciting British Gardens to open to the public in recent years’ by The Sunday Telegraph. So a double delight awaits. ‘Prairie Spirits’ runs until 11th October. www.artymagazines.com

Comedies, dramas and even action films are all being helmed by women. From the all-female ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ to Melissa McCarthy in action spoof ‘Spy’, buddy comedy ‘Hot Pursuit’ (with two female leads rather than the traditional testosterone soaked Bromcom) to Meryl Streep as an ageing rocker in ‘Ricki and the Flash’. Some of these films were even written by women! Plus, these films are actually interesting. Which is not normally the case when Hollywood decides to throw a bone to it’s female audience; we’ve seen enough badly-drawn-but-beautiful period dramas. These films show the multi-faceted female experience and that women can carry a film by themselves. No token women here! ‘Avengers’, I love you, but really; the only member of the team not to have a solo film is the only woman – how is that acceptable?! The main theme in this summer’s new releases is the sequel; from 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron' to 'Jurassic World', 'Ted 2' and 'Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation'. Hollywood, despite a willingness to test the commercial power of films with female leads, is still very much driven by a desire to repeat what has previously worked. 'Paper Towns', starring British model Cara Delevingne, is an adaptation of a Michael H Weber book, brought to the big screen by the same team who adapted his ridiculously popular 'The Fault in Our Stars' (their trade is the weepy, you have been warned!). The aforementioned 'Spy', directed by Paul Feig and starring Melissa McCarthy teams the duo for the third time. Meryl Streep's 'Ricki and the Flash' is also somewhat of a known quantity, the actor has had summer hits going back to 2006's 'The Devil Wears Prada'. We should note that these new female-fronted films will live and die by the box office; if they make enough to encourage a sequel (even a bad one). That means more films fronted by women in the cinemas, but if they don't... Judd Apatow's 'Trainwreck', starring Amy Schumer, is his first film with a female lead. If it fails to win support at the box office it is likely that this will be blamed not on the director but on his leading lady. Likewise, whilst it is notable that Disney's 'Tomorrowland' has a teen girl for a protagonist, will her co-star George Clooney or director Brad Bird be blamed? Trying something new is always scary, having a summer film roster full of female leads is relatively new and the Hollywood studios are likely to be wary of the outcome. As audience members it is our duty not to see a film specifically because it has women in, nor to pretend to love something that is terrible just because it is full of women (hello, 'Pitch Perfect 2') but we need to be honest about why we don't like a film. Don't let a shoddily written or directed film be blamed on its actresses and we can make a change. For more great films, check the listings for Latest TV’s film review show, PostFeature. he poet Alexander Pope wrote the following epitaph for Sir Isaac Newton who died in 1727: “Nature and Nature’s laws lay hid in night: God said, Let Newton be! And all was light”. Newton’s three laws of motion and the law of universal gravitation applied not only to the heavens but also to the earth in a uniform way. Newton’s discoveries influenced the rapid development of new technologies and from this the Industrial Revolution in Britain was born. In 1905 Einstein discovered that time and space are not independent but are linked as space-time; which he described in his special theory of relativity. This showed that Newton’s three laws of motion were only approximately correct, breaking down when velocities approached that of light. In 1915 Einstein then detailed how gravitational effects of matter affect space-time in his general theory of relativity, highlighting that Newton’s law of gravitation was only approximately correct, breaking down in the presence of very strong gravitational fields. From Einstein’s theories numerous new technologies have been developed such as digital cameras, modern computers, televisions, solar cells, laser beams, GPS systems, nuclear energy, sending Britain into the Digital Age. Considered one of the cleverest persons alive today is Stephen Hawking. The fact that he is alive is in itself a miracle considering he was given 2 years to live at the age of 21 and is now 73. I’m currently reading Stephen Hawking’s book ‘The Grand Design’ and it’s a fascinating read. He explains how when we look at the macro world compared to the micro world it appears to act differently and follow different laws. This is the age of quantum physics and the pace of change is staggering. A quote from Darwin stated “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change”. Now I wonder if we can measure that at schools?

ou may not realise it but there are all sorts of interesting and unusual places to visit on the Brighton & Hove bus network – stretching out to Eastbourne, the South Downs, and Steyning to name but a few.

Steyning Steyning, on Brighton Route 2, is a beautiful Sussex town. In medieval times it was a busy port on the Adur, but trade fell away when the river silted up. The legacy is a town with plenty of well preserved Tudor buildings. The town has various independent shops if you’re looking for something a bit different, and coffee shops. Have a look around Cobblestone Walk shops, a small arcade in one of Steyning’s oldest buildings – it’s just off the High Street next to the Clock House. There is also a farmers’ market on the first Saturday of every month, and the Steyning farmers’ market won the Sussex Food and Drink Awards BEST Farmers Market 2015. 012_LS734_interview - Milton Jones_011_LS466_interview 19/06/2015 17:08 Page 1

ONE IN A MILTON Milton Jones, the king of the one-liner and Mock the Week regular, is back. His new tour sees Jones take on the mantle of Indiana Jones, don the hat and set off on a madcap journey into surrealist comedy. Your new tour is called The Temple of Daft. Why? Basically, previous tours have been lots of jokes in different forms, but basically lots of jokes. This is more of a story, more like one of my radio shows. It loosely, and I say loosely, follows a kind of adventure-archaeology type story. It started off with me noticing that I had the same surname as Indiana Jones, and it has all transpired from there.

television as well, to some extent. On Mock the Week, I sit in the one-liner chair, and if it’s not me, it’s Stewart Francis or Gary Delaney - you know, it’s the ‘odd’ bloke, so that has gone in my favour. I’m sort of grateful for where it’s got me, but if I go for an audition for another show, albeit a sitcom or something, it’s quite often as the crazy neighbour. You think well, I’m glad I’ve got this audition, but it’d be nice not to have to do that role forever. So, I suppose this show is me trying to move things on.

Do you wear a hat? Do you have a whip? I do wear a hat at one point, not for the whole thing, ‘cause then people would never see my hair. You talk about using a narrative style, and you say this is a bit of a departure. What brought that on? Two things. When people see you on telly, they want to come and see the same sort of thing when they see a live show, but obviously not the same jokes. Moving to a narrative was a way of keeping the same style. It begins to mine other areas of jokes as well, in terms of, if you can do a scene where you’re talking between two people - even though I’m the only person there - that’s a different sort of writing than just one-liner after one-liner. A lot of your comedy is quite word based can you just come up with it? No. It’s all about writing as much as you can, and then taking the top 10 per cent. There’s lots of stuff I’ve discarded. The new show will have between 200 and 250 jokes, probably, but that doesn’t mean that’s all I’ve written; I’ve written another 100 that I’ve put in the bin, at least another 100, probably, maybe three times as much, and that’s the hard work. Even after all this time, I’m thinking I have just written the best joke ever, and I go and do it and it just doesn’t work - however, the thing I improvise off the back of it does work. But, I wouldn’t have got to that place had I not tried the first one. Has being known as the king of the one-liner ever been an encumbrance at all? Yeah I mean, in a way, I’ve got to be grateful... people want to put you in a box, so that originally it’s people who are booking gigs; they want to know what type of comedian you are to fit on a bill. And I think that’s true of

families, which is great to look at. It gives a slightly pantomime feel to a tour show because I know that there are grandparents who come with their grandchildren. I like that idea, it feels less niche and I quite often have to explain things, or a child will put their hand up and ask a question during a show, or it’s clear that some grandparents have brought some other grandparents with them. What does 2015 hold for you, other than a mammoth, mammoth tour? Yes, well it’s not often I can see a whole year ahead, although the tour goes to the end of November. I’m also doing two weeks in Edinburgh. I’ve got another radio show, it’ll be

I did used to use wax, but actually under TV lights that’s not so good – it wilts. the 11th series we’ve done for Radio 4, to fit in, we haven’t worked out when we’re going to do that yet. I’ve got other writing projects, so let’s put it that way, that I need to get on and do in my spare time, and there are odd things, you know. What am I doing? Celebrity Squares, in March, and there’ll be more Mock the Week. Then there’s always the next tour to think about. What’s your hair care secret? How do I get the Milton Jones look? Well, I did used to use wax, but actually under TV lights that’s not so good – it wilts, because it’s hot, and that’s not good. So now I use something called Backcomb Dust, which is actually far drier and keeps your hair higher for longer. Sounds like an advert. It does a bit, doesn’t it? I’m not sure I’m the image the company would want, necessarily, but it’d be nice to get some kind of sponsorship where I get free stuff. I usually say, the higher the hair, the thicker the crowd. Hopefully, on my tour, I won’t have to have it too high.

A lot of your stuff is family friendly, and you’re sometimes called a Christian comedian - do you think that by going against the flow it’s served you rather well? Yes, although it’s not a conscious effort: I’m not thinking how can I be different to this. I’m just doing what I would find funny myself, hopefully. And I think it is true that I get a very wide demographic, as a result, coming to my tours, because…it’s partly having done Mock The Week and Radio 4, those two ends of the human life scale. And it’s kind of accessible in a way that people feel happy to come as entire

And finally, we have to ask - where do you get your shirts from? Usually retro shops around about. It’s tricky with shirts because people think, ‘Oh zany shirt!’ but actually the zaniest of shirts is too much. What I like are shirts that people go, ‘Oh that looks… hang on, is that good or bad?’ It needs to be quite subtle, in a way, and I’ve got 100s of them. But yes, they are usually from Oxfam or retro shops where the old lady says, ‘Oh, that looks just you, that does,’ and they’ve no idea who I am.” Milton Jones And The Temple Of Daft, Thursday 25 June, Theatre Royal Brighton, £27.90, 0844 871 7615, www.atgtickets.com

UNDER THE INFLUENCE...

BLACK GRAPE

Playing follow the leader – whether the leader wants to play or not ver the years many comedians have become the ready go-to names when citing who your comedy influences are. There are trends that emerge. For instance, at one point you couldn’t throw a mic stand in a comedy club without someone saying they wanted to be the next Bill Hicks. And there are tribes that settle too, such as those that set out to emulate the sharp whimsy of Daniel Kitson and Josie Long. Others strive for greater conflict as they describe their favourite razor-sharp wits as Frankie Boyle and Jerry Sadowitz (Scottishness having no known influence on how prepared you are to skirt close to the bone in the pursuit of a punchline notwithstanding). Who it is you are prepared to affiliate yourself with, humour-wise, says a lot about you from the off. It’s no surprise that a number of newer comedians, still trying to leave an impression on bookers, will include quotes about themselves describing ‘the next generation’s Eddie Izzard’ or ‘the twenty-first century’s Richard Pryor’ in a hopeful bid for a slot on the bill. It’s stating your team for the record and who your chosen leader is. Whether your leader chooses to lead is irrelevant. Which is how we find Stewart Lee, the current crop’s laissez-faire idol, so louch he even writes saying he doesn’t want to go to awards ceremonies anymore, whilst never contemplating any possibility that he might never be invited again. It is, in fact, the men and women that walk their own paths, that have their own voices that are completely unlike anybody else’s that have the most followers. Case in point is this week’s visitor to the Brighton Dome’s Concert Hall, Reginald D Hunter. Hunter is both outsider and insider as he pokes fun at British and American society, he is prepared to say not just the ‘cheeky’ thing but also what might be considered the ‘wrong’ thing in his pursuit to make us laugh and think. Which is what we want our influential comedians to do. What they want us to do is find our own paths. Stop being a follower, and maybe make them laugh at something that had never occurred to their much revered noggins. From the ashes of the Happy Mondays came Black Grape, still going strong with Shaun Ryder ounding in fine fettle, Shaun Ryder is currently touring Black Grape's brilliant number album of 1995, ‘It's Great When You're Straight…’ Following the demise of the Happy Mondays shortly after the unhappy and drug-fuelled sessions for their final album, ‘Yes, Please’, Shaun Ryder continued his friendship, musically and otherwise, with Kermit, and those two formed Black Grape. "Kermit was pulling around with me, we were smack buddies, and I got him in to do some of the stuff on the ‘Yes, Please’ album. So, when the Mondays finished, me and him just got together. We had some ideas from when we were doing ‘Yes, Please’ - they should have been included on that album." Black Grape upset many people’s predictions by roaring in at number one in the album charts, containing a number of classic songs that remain some of the very best Ryder has written, including ‘Kelly's Heroes’ and ‘In The Name Of The Father’. "There were people in the music business - even my good friend Tony (Wilson,

Factory Records founder, with whom the Mondays were signed to) - all knocking on the door, going: 'you should be doing this, and you should be grateful for that’, all telling me how much I had blown it, not really knowing what the complete story with the Mondays was. I just thought the best thing is to keep your mouth shut, let everyone carry on saying what they were saying, and just come out with the goods. And that is what I did. It was a good '**** off' to everyone when the album came out and went to number one..." Live, back in their mid-90s incarnation, they were a brilliant and super-tight live proposition. "We are really tight and fluid now, better than we was then. We are compos mentis now." With everyone seemingly healthy and up for it, Ryder seems very excited by the tour and how everything is going in general. "I was bumping into Kermit at various gigs like Snoop Dogg, and every time I saw him he was looking better and better and better. He's just had a baby, a good partner. So, I thought, 'you know what? I'm going to do it with him’." And the future? "The plan is for me and Kermit to do another Black Grape album. It's likely that, we'll do that before another Mondays album." Both the Festival Youth Choir and Community Youth Choir joined the BFC on stage for ‘Invictus’ and their being welcomed to watch Mozart’s Requiem in the crowd was a welcomingly accessible and inclusive touch from the BFC. yub Khan Din’s play is as funny today as it was when it premiered back in1996. The 1999 film version was a huge success and, like all theatre that goes on to become a hit movie, that iconic status will often throw up huge barriers for any subsequent stage version. But not with this production, the company deliver a pacy performance that manages to balance perfectly the comedy with the tragedy of this family story of Interracial marriage. Bullying George is portrayed movingly by Simon Nagra, finely delivering the conflicts thrown up by his faith, his Irish Catholic wife and Northern English life and morality. Pauline McLynn does a good job, perhaps not yet comfortable in the role, (Linda Basset’s defining performance is a tough act to follow), but by the second half she hit her stride for her best and most emotional scenes. The family are all excellently played but special mention goes to Adam Karim who brought a wonderful vulnerability and believability to his role as the young Sajit. Mention to for Sally Bankes who as Aunty Annie epitomised that wonderful Lancashire trait of the all knowing, all caring and always there neighbour/relative. I saw in her so many of the women of my own northern childhood. A good

The energetic ensemble provides a happy-clappy party and audience participation is mandatory. Campy choirmaster Daniel Thomas is clearly having a ball and to see him raised up on a podium amidst a sea of his followers, his radiance reflected in their rapturous faces, easily draws religious comparisons. Unfortunately his ego is as unbridled as his enthusiasm, sometimes eclipsing other performers; especially the poor soloist he forgot to introduce. Unforgiveable! However he did remember the name of his special guest Jaz Ellington (The Voice 2012), whose glorious singing is like sunshine on a rainy day. Clarendon Centre, 13 June 2015 ★★★★★ Martin Baron

SATURDAY 27 Edwardian Farm BBC2, 6.30pm Archaeologists go tin mining in Cornwall, an industry which survived until the end of the 20th century. They drill blast holes by hand and get to grips with tools such as the grimly nick-named ‘the widow-maker’. Read George Orwell’s superb essay ‘Down the Mine’ perhaps to school up before the show.

Prized Apart BBC1, 7pm Saturday night adventure awaits! In the ancient city of Fes, contestants have to find hidden treasures to avoid a terrifying leap into one of North Africa’s largest caves. Loved ones watch, answering questions to keep their partners in the game. Takeshi’s Castle style sadistic fun for all the family.

Black Work ITV1, 9.40pm Black is the colour (and mood) of gritty crime drama. In this first of a three-part thriller PC Jo Gillespie starts to lose trust in her police family after her detective husband Ryan is murdered. Compelled to carry out her own investigation, I think we can safely assume she won’t play by the rules.

The event, now in its 16th year, is hosted by Haringey Police and Community Boxing club at London's Alexandra Palace. Nearly 400 fighters from around the continent gather across four rings for a number of events, leading to the men's finals on Sunday. Kiev-Del Dyer and Kingsley Okolie return to represent Haringey, whilst boxers from all over the UK, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland, and Ireland will be on show. Fighters are drawn from 10 weight categories. Gerry Willmott MBE founded Haringey and played a central role in starting the Box Cup, and he is delighted that it continues to go from strength to strength. “The spaces for entrants filled up in two weeks,” he said. “It shows how popular it is and how much interest there is in grass-roots boxing. It’s the largest open boxing tournament in Europe and it’s something that everyone wants to be involved in. It gives them the chance to fight a few times in three days, which is a pretty rare opportunity. The pros all mention it now, it’s something they put on their CV.” This event was recorded on 21st June.

SUNDAY 28 Surprise Surprise ITV1, 8pm Holly Willoughby springs more surprises on some of the nation’s most inspirational people. Awww shucks, it’s nice to have some cheer on a Sunday night. A family divided by a devastating illness are brought back together. By helicopter. If only Game Of Thrones could have its own Holly Willoughby, we’d all be happier.

Humans Channel 4, 9pm Laura finds herself at odds with her family when she tries to return Anita to the shop. What, is Anita a bag of spuds? Good one eh?! Joe suggests that Laura is imagining Anita’s strange behaviour, but he can’t help noticing how human (and spudlike) Anita appears when he has to check her for damage.

Pappano’s Classical Voices BBC4,9pm Antonio Pappano explores the great roles and the greatest singers of the last hundred years through the prism of the main classical voice types. He begins with the soprano – at the heart of nearly every opera, although (spoiler alert) the heroine isn’t always alive come the final curtain.
