7 – 13 JULY

e gads it’s hot! That’s hardly news. But every year it’s treated as such a huge surprise. ‘Oh no! The big hot ball in the sky is glaring down on us and we don’t know what to do! Let’s turn pink and hope for the best!’ Yuh, right. Just last week we were treated to the hottest July day on record – and since 2006. Register those two facts. Yes, it was the hottest day in July we‘ve ever kept a note of, but the last time that record was broken was only 9 years ago. It gets hot every year folks. Just the same as it gets icy and we throw our hands in the air and proclaim that we never have enough grit for the roads and how do they ever manage in Sweden when it’s like this all the time. It’s a cliché, but one we’re living up to, that the British talk about the weather. I’d say it’s even more the case here on the coast as the sea crashes and entices, provides the perfect stomping and kicking barrier when we’re cross – just try bashing the gravy out of those breaking waves with your feet for five minutes and it’ll get the days’ stress out of you good and proper! – to a meditative tranquility only an open watery horizon in Spring can provide. Right now it’s just skin-prickly sweltering, to the point of taking cold showers before bed and a striped hot water bottle filled with chilled tap water to nighttime slumbers just to try and nod off. Windows are thrown open and the slightest sea breeze embraced like a winning lottery ticket. But with less jumping about. Much less jumping about. Fortunately we live near the sea. The glorious icy sea, that can offer up a truly refreshing antidote to a day’s stuffy work. Strip off, dump your bag with a safe friend, and run down into it. Dunk your head and feel those water drops trickle down your back. And suddenly the heat doesn’t seem like quite such an obstacle to happy living any more.

LATEST PEOPLE Fruitful farewell to Circus Street Market righton and Hove community groups joined Cathedral Group in a final showcase of dance and performance, arts and recycling at the Circus Street market building on Thursday 25th June to mark the closure of the building ahead of redevelopment. “We invited all our community partners for a final celebration of all their amazing events which helped turn an empty, unloved old market building into a vibrant hub of community and creative activity over the past two years,” said Penny Humphrey, Head of Marketing at Cathedral Group. With hundreds of community sessions and 88 events held at Circus Street, there have been over 50,000 visitors to the building over the past two years. Market traders displayed old market memorabilia, along with a barrow-full of complimentary fruit for the 160 guests to enjoy; LoveCycle community upcyclers showed their talents at turning waste into wanted items and the

Wood Store displayed their expert craft at creating beautiful household items and furniture out of old wood. A 32-foot Airstream caravan was backdrop to a ‘pop-up’ gallery showing huge pieces of art work

from young Brighton artists who have worked with Circus Street over the past few years and Sean Hawkey took photos of guests with his 150-year-old camera equipment. Same Skye also showcased beautiful lamps and lighting displays. Entertainment included a stunning dance performance from the Urban Playground Group with South East Dance, parodying commuter travel, the Hoopers Fire Show and music performances from the Iron Boot Scrapers, whilst a delicious hog roast was served by local social enterprise, The Big Fig.

“We will now be closing the old market building for the last time

and will start work later this year on building the exciting new Circus Street development, which includes a new home for South East Dance, a library and teaching building for the University of Brighton and new homes and independent shops and restaurants.” “Many of our community partners will continue to work with us as we start to look at how best to redevelop the long-derelict Preston Barracks site on Lewes Road with the University of Brighton and Brighton & Hove City Council.”

immense sense of achievement when they got to Brighton. There are three unique routes starting from the Coca Cola London Eye to Brighton which keen cyclists

and amateurs found exhilarating – hurtling past city landmarks and into the countryside of Surrey and Sussex. Riders chose from 100 miles, 80 miles or 60 miles over Westminster Bridge to Parliament Square and along the Thames to Chelsea Harbour, towards Richmond, Chessington, then along picturesque country lanes and up to the spectacular Devil's Dyke.

Capital to Coast On Sunday 28th June, the LA fitness Capital to Coast charity cycle ride was a huge success. Riders followed in the footsteps and pedal power of cycle greats like gold medalist Sir Bradley Wiggins CBE. Supporting the ride and celebrating the 20th anniversary were regular participants Matt Barbet and Jeff Brazier and broadcaster Vanessa Feltz . Organised by Norwood, a charity supporting children with educational needs and learning disabilities the team raised a large amount of money for several great charities and actively encouraged

those with disabilities to take part – usually riding on tandem cycles with their supporters. Their participation not only inspired other riders, but also instilled an

Splash Of Green Ball Revellers flocked to the Grand to take part in the Splash Of Green Charity Ball organised by Della Lamden in aid of the Sussex Horizon Centre. The glamorous event saw guests arriving in outfits that boasted a flash of turquoise, emerald or teal. The evening of dining and dancing included live and silent auctions, all in aid of a worthy cause. By the end of the night more than £26,000 had been raised for the appeal, which needs a total of £3.7 million to build a support centre. It was another night of success for Della and her team.

he science of happiness seems like such a bizarre thing to study yet we have enough medical evidence now to show that your psychological health can have very serious effects on your physical health. Stress can impact on our body by activation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS is a vast network of nerves reaching out from the spinal cord, directly affecting every organ in the body. It has two branches, the sympathetic ANS helps us deal with stressful situations by imitating a ‘fight or flight’ response. The fight or flight response was first noted by one of the early pioneers in stress research, Walter Cannon. In 1932 he established that when an organism experiences a shock or perceives a threat, it quickly releases hormones that help us to run faster and fight harder. After the danger has passed, the parasympathetic ANS takes over, decreasing heartbeat and relaxing blood vessels. In healthy people, the two branches of the ANS maintain a balance: action followed by relaxation. Unfortunately many people’s sympathetic ANS stays on guard, making them unable to relax and let the parasympathetic system take over. If this situation becomes chronic, a whole variety of stress-related symptoms and illnesses can follow. Stress in teenagers is a real issue. During my childhood, I didn’t have to face any peer pressure on fashion. I would have found social media horrendous and would be a nervous wreck worrying about impending environmental doom. I want teenagers to learn the art of finding happiness, to develop coping strategies and skills in order to make them thrive and survive stress. Recently, James May bought many smiles to our pupil’s faces. Thanks James, what a true star you are! Furthermore, more smiles were had at the Big Bang Fair when we won the Coast 2 Capital STEM club of the year award and the Gatwick Airport Prize for Electronics. I was so proud of all of the STEM club members, their hard work and enthusiasm just shone through. They really are a wonderful bunch of kids. When I asked them what they wanted to spend their winnings on, one of the lads from the Starburst Electronics project replied “let’s put it back into developing next year’s STEM project!” It does say something though when one of the judges couldn’t believe that we weren’t from the independent/private sector. So watch this space…. we are “releasing potential” at an alarming rate, changing mindsets and ensuring that our children have a sense of entitlement to a bright, secure future.

et on. Go somewhere. Get Bus(y) celebrates the role of the bus in the city’s creative and cultural life. It was inspired by Brighton’s independent North Laine and designed by a team of three creatives based in the city. The piece started life as an ordinary double-decker bus, and has been completely transformed – not only the exterior but also the inside, floors, ceilings, lighting and seats. It is covered with original work by Brighton’s iownthisart, one of Brighton’s most exciting artists, who says he takes his inspiration from living and playing in such a creative city. Creative director Chris Harrison and commercial interior designer Chloe Bullock worked with artist iownthisart (aka Jason McQuillen) to produce a unique design with strong visual impact that does justice to the city’s quirky

individualism. Jason’s very stylised and accessible work is becoming well known in Brighton, and features in some of the city’s arty hotels, pubs and cafes such as the Marwood coffee house and Hotel Pelirocco. The bus was entered as an art installation at this year’s Brighton Fringe with on-bus free live performances. Fringe Director Julian Caddy said: “We were delighted with this unique addition to the Fringe programme. I love the way the artwork represents the city’s independent creative spirit, and it provided a fun new performance venue.” Get on. Go somewhere. hat thing that hangs about on my upper lip has been there some time. I was never a hairy bloke, to be quite honest, I didn’t need to shave until I was 25 years old and until then my face was a smooth as… well let’s not dwell on that. By my mid-twenties I was starting to tire of being asked my age in pubs and bars and at the first sproutings of a moustache I was quick to nurture it. To be honest it was pretty feeble and I did resort to shading it darker with and eyebrow pencil, well why not, I had to do the same to my sparse blonde eyebrows if I wanted them to be seen! The result was that I looked like a baby-faced Flash Harry, the iconic spiv from the St. Trinians films as played by George Cole. I liked it though and as time passed I was able to develop the ‘tache. By my early thirties it was substantial enough to curl and wax. It became a pretty permanent feature, shaved off from time to time when the sun came out and I felt the need to go naked. More recently I grew the beard, not a bad effort and whiter than white, rather good when having to dress up as Santa (and yes I did, for charitable purposes). The whole beard scene has grown crazily and Brighton’s beardage can now be measured in

The whole beard scene has grown crazily and Brighton’s beardage can now be measured in kilometres kilometres. Not one for blending in I decided it was time for the fuzz to go. I rummaged in the bathroom cabinet and found the necessary tools and off it came, well all but the ‘tache. That would take more thought. It was a surprisingly tough job too, like clearing thicket, not pleasant. That very same day I had to go into to town to buy a gift. I rather like Molton Brown products and often assume that friends will too, so I nipped in and, having made a purchase, they asked me if I would like to return for a free wet shave that Friday. Well the timing could not have been better and I of course accepted. Two days later I was in the chair having the most marvelous pampering, a facial followed by a steam shave by Mr Peter Joannou, a local barber of skill and crooner to boot. For my personal steam shave and facial experience Peter used the following products:

Molton Brown Deep Clean Face Scrub – with African whitewood extract to tighten your pores and dissolve excess oils while jojoba wax beads slough off dirt and ingrown hairs. Molton Brown Moisture Rich Shaving Soap – blended with coconut oil, this shaving soap creates a creamy lather, great for softening facial hair growth. For the first shave. Molton Brown Razor-glide Shaving Gel – a luxurious gel with notes of mandarin and African whitewood extract for the second close shave. This was followed by Molton Brown Post-shave Recovery Balm – blended with barley extract with notes of sandalwood and musk to help rebuild your skin’s moisture barrier. He went on to apply Molton Brown Anti-Fatigue Bai Ji Eye Gel – great for hydrating, cooling and soothing the delicate eye area and Molton Brown Extra Rich Bai ji Hydrator to moisturise and nourish and soften your skin. With a spritz of Molton Brown’s Shisur Fine Fragrance and the offer of a glass of Bison Beer (declined) I headed off much refreshed. Shaving since has been so much easier. I plan to visit Peter at his salon at least once a month and I must go back to Molton Brown for some shaving requisites. some of the world’s top wine masters and critics and I have to say, it was a delight to discuss the wines with them. The overall opinion? Well, Ridgeview is certainly world class. The early vintages are still drinking well, proving that the wines are of a very high quality and the newer vintages highlight the adherence that the family have to creating fine wines that certainly challenge the supremacy of Champagne. Of course here in Brighton and Sussex we all love Ridgeview, but on my travels around Europe and beyond it is so exciting to see how

THE FIZZ BIZ

Celebrating 20 years of world class wine from Ridgeview Wine Estate ow lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place and especially so when it is a day like today with the sun bathing the coast and the south downs in glorious heat. Is it any wonder that here in East Sussex we are now the centre of an incredible business success and that is the production of fine sparkling wines. Last month I was lucky enough to be invited to London’s Bloomsbury Hotel to celebrate the achievements of Ridgeview Wine Estate to taste a rare line up of their flagship sparkling wine, Bloomsbury. With press from across the globe I visited the exclusive Bloomsbury Hotel, to taste through archive vintages of Ridgeview’s Bloomsbury wines. This included the wine from their very first vintage in 1996 through to the current 2013 vintage which has just been released. The first vintage of Ridgeview’s pioneering sparkling wine was released in 1999, back then the English wine industry was at an embryonic stage and wines from the UK were met with much skepticism. At that time we had not really embraced the difference between the hideous ‘British Wines’ made from imported grape juice and wines made from grapes grown here. Tamara Roberts, second generation CEO commented “our wines have always had a sense of place and provenance, however the world of wine drinkers was yet to see the full potential of what England was able to produce. Two decades and hundreds of awards later, Ridgeview, and our industry, is in a place where our wines are

Ridgeview Wine Estate – fine wines that I simply love to drink not only understood, they are applauded. We have been delighted to be a part of that journey and this tasting is to celebrate all that we have achieved.” Roberts adds “My father Mike had the foresight to plant our vineyard in Ditchling, Sussex in 1995, and as a family we have all

invested in the long term plan for our business. It’s fabulous to be able to show our wines at a tasting like this, where the wine press and trade have had so few chances to taste multiple vintages of one key wine from England. The longevity of our cuvées will add yet a further dimension for those that are already familiar with our wines”. So there we gathered in the intimate surroundings of the library room at the Bloomsbury Hotel, guests invited to stay and enjoy a quintessentially English afternoon tea with the Roberts family after the tasting. With limited quantities of these wines available it was a great privilege to have been invited along to join

well the wines are received. In the Netherlands Ridgeview is very popular as it is in Sweden and Finland. In Sicily it went down very well amongst the public and winemakers alike and in Vancouver it proved to be a massive hit. I could talk about geology, minerality and terroir till I am blue in the face, Sussex boasts fine credentials in all of these areas. What really matters though is how much you enjoy drinking a wine. I throw away the science and the jargon, I rate a wine not on how much it costs but on how much I enjoy drinking it. Sussex produces many fine sparkling wines (we are globally famous for this) but it has to be hats off to the Roberts family at the Ridgeview Wine Estate for producing a flight of fine wines that I simply love to drink. www.ridgeview.co.uk

ONE HOT ROOM ost directors, when handed a script, will consider a variety of locations in order to broaden the story. They will insert as many different backgrounds as time, money and narrative will allow. After all, wouldn’t it be terribly boring to watch an entire plot unfold in one small space? The genius of director Sidney Lumet’s potent ‘12 Angry Men’ is that we forget that all of the action takes place in just one small, claustrophobic space because the dialogue and story move at such a pace! Gradually, as the film progresses, Lumet moves the walls of the studio set closer and closer in. He changes the camera lenses to reduce the apparent distance between the backgrounds and the figures prowling the room, ramping up the tension even further. The twelve men are a jury who must decide the fate of an 18-year-old who is accused of stabbing his abusive father to death. If the boy is found guilty he will go to the chair and eleven of the jurors are convinced he did it. ‘Juror No 8’, played by Henry Fonda, isn’t so sure, and gradually his doubts infect the others. The bigotry and stupidity established at the outset are convincingly overcome by a combination of compassion and clear thinking. The film is a marvel that shows how nothing but dialogue can affect change. Even the ‘bad guys’ around the table (‘Juror No 3’, played by Lee J Cobb, and ‘Juror No 10’, played by Ed Begley) have their mesmerisingly monstrous moments but are still markedly human. We feel sympathy when No 3 is finally crushed by the realization of his own inadequacy as a father. By far the most spellbinding moment of the film, however, is when No 10’s racist rant prompts the others, slowly, one by one, to leave the table and stand with their backs to him, each an icy tower in this boiling room. We are in no doubt from the opening moments that the room is an oven: it is the hottest day of the year and there is no air conditioning. The single, wall-mounted fan seems to be out of order and beads of sweat glisten on foreheads and shirt backs become increasingly damp. It is no wonder these men are so desperate to leave the room and want nothing more than an easy verdict. Unfortunately ‘easy’ means the death sentence for a teenager. The camerawork is magnificent: at the beginning of the film all of the cameras are positioned above eye level and mounted with wide-angle lenses to give the appearance of greater distance between the subjects. As we progress the cameras slip down to eye level and by the end of the film, nearly all of it is shot in close-up, below eye-level, with telephoto lenses to increase the encroaching sense of claustrophobia. This film is a work of genius. MIKE WARD AT LARGE WALKING ON EGGSHELLS

Follow us: @mikewardontv

ou know what'll happen the moment Chris Evans gets on air with his new-look Top Gear and TFI Friday? The complaints will flood in. Or I hope they will. That way, we'll know he's doing his job. Never mind what people are actually complaining about, just as long as he’s swamped by tweets, switchboard-jamming phone calls etc., from those TV viewers for whom taking offence, at anything and everything, has become a full-time occupation. And just so long as he treats their rantings with the derision they deserve, points out they’re still the views only of a tiny, moany minority, then carries on regardless. Provided he does all that, we'll know there's still hope for the future of television. It’s not that I like TV which deliberately sets out to shock, contriving ways to offend for the hell of it. That's just babyish and attention-seeking. What I like (and what we urgently need right now) is TV that just remembers how to have a laugh, that has a real sense of devil-may-care abandon, a sense of ‘hey, what if...?’ and isn't afraid to get it wrong sometimes. I like TV which, if a small proportion of viewers take offence at something it’s done, doesn't immediately beat itself up about it. Not unlike Jeremy Clarkson's Top Gear, in fact, and the original TFI Friday. Because right now, television is suffocated by fear, pathetically afraid to upset anyone out there in viewerland. Even blatant idiots. Take that crazy business recently when Alan Titchmarsh used the gardening term "bastard-trenching" on breakfast TV. Although ‘bastard’ isn't a swear word, and was being used here in a perfectly valid context, host Louise Minchin had to issue an apology to anyone offended. Utterly laughable. But also scary. And a sign of things to come, as broadcasters operate in a climate of increasing paranoia. Already, it seems, they’ve lost all perspective. They’re walking on eggshells. Forget common sense. Your guideline as to what you should broadcast now boils down to one question: ‘Could some halfwit find a way to get upset about this?’ If they could? Well, drop it. Not worth the risk. Play safe. Never mind that it's as easy as pie these days for any old numpty with too much time on their hands to complain about something they've spotted on TV, to tap out some frothy-mouthed tweet, to click on some potty petition. Never mind that such types are outnumbered a thousand times over by the well-adjusted majority of us, with better things to get worked up about. Theirs are the views that today's paranoid programme-makers respond to. Hence madness like Titchgate. So, can Chris Evans reverse this depressing trend? Time will tell. If not, we’re well and truly bastard-trenched. Mike Ward is the TV Critic of the Daily Star and the TV Editor of the Daily Express Saturday magazine. UNNATURAL FORMS righton seafront really has got it all. Buzzing beach, plenty of beer stops, fab fish and chips, the Pier… And soft sculptured body parts that explore the juxtaposition of beauty and the grotesque. What? You mean you haven’t discovered the surreal world of Holly Rozier that’s to be found at the Open Studios down in the old arches? Holly’s work has got to be the most astonishing stuff to enter the arty inbox this year. And she gets top marks, too, for picture captioning (check out the ‘Bleeding, scabby blob’ below). But seriously, I have no idea how she does it. Her work is inspired by intimations of the human form, with selected body parts reworked to a different extent in each of her pieces. She contorts, inflates and extends the body parts into a new breed or hybrid of a being. These surreal, anthropomorphic forms could be human, animal, plant or alien; genetically engineered or naturally evolved, alive or dead? Everything susceptible to transformation is cut and sewn by Holly’s skilled hand. Contrasting ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ fabrics, hessian sacking and nylon tights are used to create the appearance of skin. Alongside, rich silky fabrics are used to create intricate and beautiful, yet putrid and wet, sections of innards exposed through the ‘skins’ of the forms. Nature’s Way This is an artist who thrives on heavily decorative and timeconsuming processes. And she likens the act of repetitive hand-sewing and adorning the surface of her sculptures with bead after bead, and transformed fabric to the act of making a Frankenstein-style creation. Go see. You’ll be attracted, repelled and utterly intrigued. Or check our Holly’s entry in our annual publication Art in Brighton 2015. www.artymagazines.com Twitter @brightonsarty

CURTAIN APP

Theatre Royal Brighton launch an app for children with additional needs and their families heatre Royal Brighton has developed an app, Inside The Magic, designed to enhance the experience of visiting the theatre for children and families, primarily those with additional needs. It is understood to be the first resource of its kind created by a theatre in this country. The 208 year old Theatre Royal Brighton holds regular tours of the auditorium, backstage, under stage and dressing rooms. The completely interactive app will add to participants’ enjoyment by presenting additional information in a lively and accessible way. In the dressing rooms, for example, they can see some of the famous actors who have changed into costume; in the backstage areas, they can see film of technical staff preparing the stage and they can stand on stage and watch footage of a full auditorium with rapturous applause from an audience. Everyone will also be able to get a front and back view of the Theatre, upstairs and downstairs, even if they cannot physically make the journey themselves, as the app ‘walks’ through various locations. Characters such as the Prince Regent, Queen Victoria, theatre manager Mrs Ellen Nye Chart, who managed the theatre at the end of the 19th century, all appear. Skip the mouse, the mascot of the thriving children’s club at the theatre, also makes various cameo appearances. The device has been designed in response to the challenges cited by families who have a child with

additional needs. Over half of the families surveyed by an advocacy group working with families with additional needs reported that they would attend more mainstream live theatre if venues were better able to cater to their needs. “We wanted the app to be a shared experience, rather than an audio guide, which is a solitary experience”, explains Jackie Alexander, Development Manager, Theatre Royal Brighton. “Siblings and parents can enjoy Inside The Magic together. It adds a completely new dimension to our very popular tours”. Inside The Magic has been designed to be used either in situ or taken out to families and used as a ‘virtual visit’ for users who have mobility issues and are unable to come to the theatre. Funding for the app, which has been a year in development, was provided by a grant from Brighton and Hove City Council’s Aiming High Fund, aimed at increasing access to mainstream leisure activities for children with additional needs and their families. Commenting on the app, General Manager John Baldock said: “Theatre Royal Brighton’s history and heritage are internationally celebrated. But is wonderful to think that we are also leading the field helping every single member of our community experience the joy of live theatre”. Karen Townsend, Head of Learning and Access at Ambassador Theatre Group’s 40 UK venues, said: “The app is the culmination of a year’s work by the team who

developed it. Inside The Magic is fun, entertaining, lively and informative and will be an invaluable tool for families who may feel unsure about a visit to the theatre. We are delighted that this new app will help break down those barriers.” Inside the Magic was devised, written and produced by Jackie Alexander and John Baldock, Theatre Royal Brighton The software was developed by Digital Opportunities, Brighton.

LEWES LIVE

Seann Walsh is back in town, back to his roots, and back at Komedia

Our lovely little (if somewhat older) sister, Lewes, is host to a two-day festival over the weekend

ight and a bit years ago Seann Walsh was already a known face around Komedia. He hadn’t performed a gig in his life, but the Brighton boy was such a comedy fan that bar staff and security alike knew him from the frequency of his visits to Krater at the weekends, as well as the other comedy nights the venue featured regularly. He didn’t make it in to Komedia for the last class of Jill Edwards’ Comedy Course because he was too hungover having celebrated his twenty-first birthday the night before. He made it to every other class though. A few years later and Seann Walsh is a known face around Komedia, because he was the host of monthly hot ticket Comic Boom. He compered the evening that had previously given him a shot on that much-seen downstairs stage with first short spots and then slightly longer ones. It’s a great night that features a well known headliner and some of the best up and coming newer acts on the circuit, and Walsh was nominated for the 2011 Chortle Best Compere gong for hosting it. The boy done good. And now he’s back again. After being nominated for the Fosters Edinburgh Comedy Awards in 2013 for his show ‘The Lie-In King’, Walsh’s show last year was a coming of age one simply called ‘28’. With an appropriate Adele-like photo to go with the title that’s not dissimilar to the singer’s award-winning album, the show toured all over the country last year winning really favourable reviews en route. I mean, four and five star reviews all the way. Last October the show came to town as a part of the Brighton Comedy Festival, filling up the Corn Exchange. This week it’s back. Full circle, Seann Walsh is now actually 29 years old but bringing his show ‘28’ to Komedia. Back where it all began. So, maybe you might like to pootle along to this homecoming gig on Thursday. The TV and radio star, award-winning comic, actor, talking head (and talking advertising reptile) and comedy compere is back at a venue he has every reason to love, and to love him back. It certainly should be a good night. Seann Walsh: 28, Komedia, Thursday 9 July, 8pm, £10, www.komedia.co.uk/brighton

Reginald D Hunter – The Man Who Attempted To Do As Much As Such

Nick Payne’s award-winning play from the Royal Court Theatre is a refreshingly entertaining yet intellectually demanding theatrical experience that set my head spinning with emotions that ranged from sadness to delight. From start to finish this is captivating stuff, the staccato pacing, brilliant lighting and inventive setting all work so well – but it is the clever concept, well formed script and beautifully handled performances and direction that make the evening the joy that it is. Louise Brealey is mesmeric as Marianne, fragile one moment, controlling the next, despairing and delightful in equal parts as she plays out her role in the multiuniverse that she occupies. Joe Armstrong is equally impressive as he too plays out the sequential storyline and curious twists in how their story can be seen. Witty, moving, shocking and above all thought-provoking. Watching Roland and Marianne from so many perspectives made me contemplate the way I look at my own life and wonder too how others see it. Andrew Kay

pieces from and inspired by the minimalist composer. ‘Coruscate to Figure’ by Daniel Mackenzie (organ) was a clear highlight, with gliding, drawn out viola playing (Maria Marzaioli) creating an elegiac mood reminiscent of an Edward Artemiev score. Duncan Harrison’s reworking of Riley’s R’n’B deconstruction ‘You’re No Good’ successfully reflected the hypnotic and repetitive elements of minimalism using intelligent live mixing of tape loops. The second part of the evening was a stunning rendition of Riley’s landmark ‘In C’, where performers choose when to move from one motif to the next, and this performance was an utterly beautiful, beguiling, purely musical experience. The piece unfolded organically and melodically, shimmering at times, and somehow seemed able to appear well crafted in its ability to shift focus on different musicians over time. Special mention is due to the flute players (Chris Parfitt and Natalie Daly) in movingly accentuating the higher notes and also to the vocal work from Mary Hampton and Jo Burke, whose delicate harmonies and varied singing styles gave ‘In C’ extra colour to its sound world. One Church Brighton, 27 June 2015 Joe Fuller ★★★★★

Mr Hunter sauntered onto the stage for the last show in his national tour, clearly at ease and by the end a little self-indulgent, but still his bright, curious and philosophising self, pondering questions of race, relationships, and his own origin story... and how a white BBC crew might affect it. Pearls of wisdom mix with the odd chasm of naiveté and wonder, and at heart this is simply a very personal take on the big wide world well executed and articulated. You don't have to agree with Reginald to enjoy his pontificating, and the spark in his eye implies that really he's just happy to have your attention, laughter and grey matter at work. Sir Ranulph Fiennes: A Life At The Limits Last time I checked explorers tended not to come from council estates or poor families. As was the case with Fiennes whose blood line goes back many generations and born with the shiniest of silver spoons. However the man himself is a selfdeprecating, dry, driven, stubborn, slightly deranged yet grounded individual. His countless feats makes you feel completely inadequate for a life wasted. Yes he's crossed both poles, found lost Arabic cities, climbed Everest and travelled the length of the Nile... oh and sawn his frostbitten fingers off, was thrown out of the S.A.S., run mega marathons and raised tens of millions for charity. I'd say that was a life lived to its fullest. Pavilion Theatre, Worthing, 30 June 2015 Lee Stevens

Sun, Sex And Suspicious Parents BBC3, 9pm Two pampered lads make their way to Malia in the Greek island of Crete and their parents, unbeknownst to the ‘kids’, tag along to watch the mayhem unravel.
