irthdays and parties have been in my mind frequently of late. I was always jealous of friends who could have Summer parties to mark their own personal celebration of existence, with beach gatherings, outside cooking and the opportunity for water fights that don’t end in hypothermia. My dancing was recently described as ‘expansive and bold’, which is tactspeak for limb-apocalypse-in-motion, so a water fight puts my mal-coordination to its best and most joyful use. However, it never really occurred to me that the Summer birthday babies might be hankering for something... else. This weekend I have been invited to a Christmas themed birthday barbecue. Who says you can’t have it all?! There is now a reason for that leftover Christmas wrapping paper! But, to be honest, I can’t say I ever thought a Christmas themed pair of shorts would ever be practical outer-wear in any universe based in this side of the global hemisphere. With that in mind I’ve started thinking about how my own birthday celebrations need not be corralled by the logic or practicalities of the seasons, or convention. I find myself considering why it’s now almost par for the course that a pirate outfit is worth a purchase over a hire in this town, and yet aliens, jellyfish, old skool console characters, favourite figures from literature, and pop stars of the 22nd century never really get a look in. Are we, the city that revels in eccentricity, resting on our laurels? I surely hope not. My birthday isn’t until October so I’ve got loads of time to work out the kinks, but currently I’m erring towards arriving at a pre-arranged pub location in full on night-time attire. Wee Willy Winky eat your heart out. And the perfect opportunity for seeing those adult-sized Marvel pajamas all of my friends seem to have acquired for their birthdays. The most comfortable glad rags in town, and so simple to roll home in afterwards. Now, what’s your birthday idea?

LATEST PEOPLE Young Start-up Talent Launch n Friday 10th July at Brighton Racecourse, Brighton's local business community and the region’s loyal Young Start-up Talent (YST) sponsors came together to celebrate and mark the launch of the entrepreneurial initiative’s fourth year in Brighton & Hove. The event heard from long term sponsors as well as new ones with Gary Chown of NatWest speaking from experience and saying "I find the whole experience of working with these talented youngsters extremely rewarding." Melanie Martinez from Fastsigns and dedicated sponsor of the initiative commented "The whole process is so enjoyable, you meet some great people. You can put as much or as little in as you want but you really want to do more." She went on to say "As a company we will not hesitate to encourage anyone to sponsor or enter and get involved in YST." Some of the Brighton YST finalists from earlier in the year came to the launch to share their experience of the initiative and the success they've seen since. We caught up with Bettina Nemeth who entered the initiative with her business 'NEM Clothing', a Brighton based eco-friendly clothing line. Bettina makes redesigned and rethought textiles and clothes from recycled materials making each item one-of-a-kind. The young entrepreneur commented that her experience with YST "helped her

O

really evolve her business plan and gave her great opportunities to network." Bettina currently has a pop-up shop in the North Lanes. This year’s Brighton YST winner, Jodie Deakin won with her highend luxury leather pet accessory company Hounds and Hides. Jodie has been using the many connections via YST to grow her business and expressed her appreciation for the continuous support from the YST team and sponsors of the initiative in helping her to develop and grow the business. The occasion also posed as an introduction to Brighton's newest sponsor and judge Hewlett-

Packard, the multinational information technology company. Vice president Martin Hess, told the room "I'm very proud to be from Sussex and if I can do something to create a stronger, more vibrant business environment then I'd love to do all I can. This initiative gives our company the opportunity to do just that." New sponsors were also announced for 2015/16 - PSD Ice, thebestofBrighton&Hove, Platinum Business, FaceMedia and Pivotal Moment. The team of sponsors are set to mentor and work alongside a wealth of new young entrepreneurs aged 16-25 in the

Brighton & Hove area. The aim is to help aspiring young talent to start their own business by being involved with not only the finalists but by engaging with schools, workshops and universities across Brighton and Hove to spread the word of the initiative. This year’s Brighton judges will be Lorraine Nugent (Media Word Waves), Dan Simpson (Hartley Fowler LLP), Matt Turner (Creative Pod), Gary Chown (NatWest), Stephen Mason (Mason Consulting), and Martin Hess (Hewlett Packard). The team are looking forward to meeting some more young entrepreneurs this year.

International Kissing Day Award winning events company The Eventa Group (Hen Heaven, thestagcompany.com & Eventa.co.uk based at Queens Road) had lots of fun raising money for Rockinghorse for International Kissing Day last week. The party planners hosted a company wide game of guess the lips to fundraise for the children's charity. Analiese Doctrove, Head of Fundraising, said “The Eventa Group have continued to support our work with their Hen Heaven Here Comes the Bride charity walks, Fish and Chip eating competitions and now International Kissing Day. We are delighted to be working with them and would like to thank everyone involved for their continued support.”

e are very excited that some of the quail eggs have hatched. We now have three baby chicks and they are causing quite a stir with students and staff alike. The year 8s have been busy weighing the eggs and plotting graphs, watching the weight go down as the eggs developed. We are now thinking maybe of having a fluffy pet corner. Exeter University launched its own micropig room earlier in May, while Bristol and Leicester universities have drafted in puppies in order to de-stress students prior to exams. We have lots of exciting projects underway at the STEM centre and more planned for next year. It is fantastic to see that the novel education techniques that we are introducing here at PACA have been endorsed by the Royal Society. The following article written by Professor Julian Williams and colleagues, from Manchester University, is available on the Royal Society’s website: ‘Reenvisaging STEM education: curriculum, assessment and integrated interdisciplinary studies’. Here is an extract from the Executive Summary: “The school curriculum and its assessment are ultimately determined by politics, but the debate can sometimes be informed by educational research, and evidence-based argument. This report draws on a literature review to inform a vision for reform of the school science and mathematics curriculum, one that would likely take 20 years. The key, central strategy is to engage or re-engage children and youth in science and mathematics in ways that are (i) authentic and (ii) interesting and meaningful to the learners themselves. The literature shows above all that the system is failing in this regard today: the curriculum and its assessment are dull, encourage teaching narrowly to low-level fact-based tests, fail to encourage creativity, and switch the majority of learners off. Research has repeatedly shown, however, that learners and teachers can be excited by science and mathematics activity involving creativity, problem solving, modelling, and interest-led projects. Any vision for reform needs to find ways to implement such activities across the system. We therefore argue for a reform of the curriculum, assessment, teaching and learning to re-focus on learners’ interests, needs, and attitudes, rather than their grades, marks and league table positions. We suggest, for instance, that every student should be entitled to leave school with a portfolio of evidence of activity in STEM that demonstrates who they are, what they are interested in, and what they can do.” Thank you for this article Julian but why wait 20 years? At PACA we are already doing this; although admittedly just waiting for government and employers to catch up. We are leading the way in reform from the frontline!

LET THE VOTING COMMENCE… Finalists revealed in next stage of Sussex Food & Drink awards the fantastic food and drink grown and made in Sussex, as well as the many great restaurants, pubs, cafes, farmers markets and food shops where it can be bought and enjoyed.” Over 10,000 people voted in the Sussex Food and Drink Awards last year and the judging panel, chaired by local dairy farmer, William Goodwin, is hoping that even more people will vote for their favourite food and drink heroes to win at www.sussexfoodawards.biz. It only takes a minute or two and every vote really does count. As well as earning the huge respect and recognition that these awards now carry, winners and runners up in all ten categories will go on to receive their trophies at a glittering tenth birthday ceremony on 28 January 2016, hosted by patron to the awards, Sally Gunnell OBE and Danny Pike from BBC Sussex. The ceremony includes a spectacular seven-course Sussex produce banquet produced by Sodexo Prestige at the Amex Stadium. elebrations were enjoyed on 6th July as over a hundred Sussex food and drink business leaders gathered at the Sussex Food & Drink Awards 10th anniversary Big Reveal of this year’s awards finalists at Harveys Brewery in Lewes. Harveys is the oldest independent brewery in Sussex, celebrating 225 years, and its historic building and riverside yard provided the perfect venue to host the many restaurateurs, butchers, farmers’ market organisers, food producers, shop keepers, brewers and vintners from the far reaches of East Sussex, West Sussex and Brighton & Hove. Previous winners of Sussex Drink Producer of the Year and proud sponsors of the Sussex Farmers Market of the Year category, Harveys is a great advocate of the ethos of buying local and has kept many family Sussex traditions over the years, including using their own supply of South Downs spring water drawn via an artesian well below the brewery which is mixed with locally grown hops. To be surrounded by such nostalgia seemed very appropriate as organisers and guests at the Big Reveal event reflected on the last ten years of the Sussex Food & Drink Awards. Host, BBC Sussex radio presenter Danny Pike entertained the audience and congratulated the top ten finalists announced in the Best Sussex Food Producer, Drink Producer, Food/Farm Shop, Farmers’ Market, Eating Experience and Butcher categories. He banged the awards dinner gong to open public voting at 6.30pm. Tempting treats from local street food vendors, a new category to the awards this year, as well as delicious platters of local food were all enjoyed and washed down with Harveys ale, Wobblegate apple juice and Sussex wine. Finalists, both familiar and new, celebrated getting to the next stage in the competition and were able to chat with the sponsor judges, winners from previous years and gain top tips about what could make them a winner of a coveted trophy this year. Paula Seager and Hilary Knight, co-directors of Natural Partnerships CIC, who run the awards as a not-for-profit scheme, are urging the public to now get voting for their favourites by 21 September. Nominations for the remaining four categories will remain open throughout the summer with Sussex Street Food, Young Chef, Farmer and Newcomer of the Year all open until September. Said Paula Seager, “This has been a wonderful evening and we are so grateful to Harveys for allowing us to host it at their stunning premises and to all our fantastic sponsors who make these awards possible.” “The competition is set to be very tough this year with an impressive line up of candidates; these unique awards are all about boosting the market for Sussex produce and letting people in the county know about

The Fashion Essentials: No one wants to feel uncomfortable in a heatwave so dressing for the summer, wherever you are, has to address comfort as well as style – making you feel confident and cool. The maxi kimono is versatile too; team it with jeans and a string cami with wedges for an every day look, over your swimwear at the beach or on top of your summer dress with platform heels and a statement necklace at night. Accessories are a purse-friendly way to update your look without breaking the bank, so choose a trend you love and invest in some key items to work into your existing wardrobe. I love the ‘70s boho trend so I have bought a floppy wide brimmed hat, sandals, a fringed suede bag and tortoiseshell sunglasses. River Island, Warehouse, Miss Selfridge, TOPSHOP and Monsoon are brimming with plenty of these items right now.

ANDREW KAY FACE UP Face it – Facebook is a captivating and distracting beast – and fun if you take it for what it is

I

use Facebook. I know it can be a time swallowing distraction and I am sure, like me, lots of you spend silly amounts of time on there too. In essence I use it as a means of keeping in touch. I like that I can chat to friends, reconnect with people that I have lost touch with and, as I have already written, play Scrabble. It is the Scrabble that gobbles up my time and I have at least 13 games on the go at any given time. That’s my choice – and not such a bad way of whiling away the hours when there are so many more distractions of a less satisfying nature. My worst vice, and I hazard a guess that I am not alone in this, is the tendency to be drawn in to the silly profile quizzes. You know the kind; What kind of dog would you be?, In a past life I was… – silliness on the whole but undeniably funny, especially the ones that claim to make assesments of you character by analysing your profile or by asking a few silly questions. I’m not alone in this either, friends who I believe are rather sensible do them too, even the most serious minded of my friends – and that puts a smile on my face. Recent quizzes, the online

Watch Latest Entertainment on

If I did look 31 I would be terribly worried version of those hilarious magazine quizzes of old, have declared that I was, in a previous life, a king, that I have masterly recall, a soaring intellect and a staggering IQ. They also declared that I look 31 which is hilarious as I am rapidly approaching 60. How they do this is of course utter nonsense, of course I do not look 31, far from it, I look my age and this is not something that worries me. In fact if I did look 31 I would be terribly worried. I should of course say that I tend not to dress my age, and I know this because I look at people that I know who are my age, but not living in the Neverland that is Brighton & Hove, and quite frankly they have gone to wine coloured corduroy and anorak land. I’m not there yet thank heavens. Last weekend I had cause to go into the Vodafone shop to upgrade my phone. It was a blisteringly hot day and as a consequence the shop was really

quiet. I was seen immediately by a charming young woman who dealt with my needs and in an open and un-pushy way, unlike the online sales person who was to say the least aggressive, so much so that I abandoned my attempt to do the deal that way. We had fun sorting things and I came away with a smarter new phone and a reduced bill – result! Towards the end of the transaction though I could see that she was somewhat distracted, slightly giggly. In the end she confessed that she thought I looked remarkably like a famous person. Not for the first time in my life has this happened but this certainly was a first. She explained in a roundabout way, saying that her younger sister, 13, was something of a geek, a maths genius already studying for a degree. I listened with interest, and with no idea where this was going. It turns out that she thought that I looked like Albert Einstein and that he was her kid sister’s hero. I didn’t need to look in a mirror to see where she was coming from. I do indeed have that mad professor look at the best of times, the new glasses from the boys at Specky Wren add to this and the fact that, due to a four week cold, I have failed to go my favourite hairdresser Andrew at BaDu. Of course once it was out of the bag all the other Vodafone staff had a good look and agreed that I really do look like Albert Einstein. How sad then that it is only a look and not his capacity for genius. I offered to let her take a selfie of the two of us to send to the sister but in the excitement of ‘Einstein’ being in the shop this was forgotten and I left without taking the snap. So Facebook thinks that I am a 31 year old former king, and my Vodafone pal thinks I look like a mathematical genius and my mum thinks that I look like I need a bloody good haircut. I think mum, as always, is probably closest to the truth.

ANDREW KAY PRE-THEATRE

If you have to eat out before you go out then choose well ’m a regular theatre goer, which is hardly surprising for regular readers as I review for Latest 7. I’m a great believer that a night out at theatre does not have to include going out for dinner. Theatre times certainly don’t fit in well with dinner time and it means eating early, or at least it does in Brighton and Hove as very few places will still be taking orders after the final curtain has come down. There are however times when I simply do not have time to get home and eat before the theatre, and on those occasions I have a few favourite places to grab a tasty and inexpensive supper. Two in particular. You can often find me in Carluccio’s on a Monday or Tuesday evening. I can easily be lured off piste by the a la carte menu but more often than not I stick with the fixed price menu. I know, I hardly look like a fixed price menu sort of a guy but the Carluccio offer is very good value and rather tasty too. This week I was off to see a rather good, as it turned out, Agatha Christie at the Theatre Royal. I’m often joined on these occasions by Ms CtM, a good friend, theatre fan and foodie. She too thought that the set menu at a very modest £10.99 for two courses was a good idea, coupled of course with a glass of Sicilian white at £3.25. Ms CtM started with the chicken liver parfait, which is my usual choice. It’s always tasty, always plentiful and unlike so many restaurants, comes with enough toasted bread to make sense of the amount of paté. She declared it very good. I decided to have the soup for a change, a very nice courgette based vegetable soup with croutons and

this recently with an old friend, and it was superb. I love the whole thali thing and the fact that every main element is accompanied by the appropriate side dishes. Living alone as I do I seldom order an Indian take-away as to get the real experience of lots of dishes, you need to order too much. That was until The Chilli Pickle launched the Chilli Pickle Canteen, a take-away service that will deliver me a complete dinner, beautifully boxed and piping hot with everything I might need included. I digress, I was talking about their pre-theatre menu which is The Chilli Pickle

heavy cream in the middle. It was delicious and more than generous. I thought it might be too much but persevered and managed to finish it off. Ms CtM moved on to the ravioli filled with spinach and ricotta, served in the traditional way with butter and sage. It arrived beautifully presented and she loved

It is certainly worth looking out for those special offers and fixed price menus it so much that next time I plan to try it myself. True to habit I chose the Milanese di Pollo a flattened chicken breast, breadcrumbed and fried, with rocket and baby gem lettuce, yes carb free (well almost). I often have

this, well always I guess, because I really like it and it’s nice and light before sitting in a theatre for a few hours. We didn’t do puds as we didn’t need them and we left happily satisfied and not feeling cheated. Great service too by the way, Carluccio’s show how good a chain can be. Carluccio’s, Jubilee Street, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1GE 01273 690493 www.carluccios.com My other current favourite is The Chilli Pickle and they too offer a great value pre-theatre menu at £13.50 is extraordinary. exceptional and offers great value for such terrific food. I did return to The Chilli Pickle a week later for dinner on a Saturday night. Mr L and I took a punt on them being able to give us a table at their busiest time. Luckily enough they were able to fit us in – just – and we had one of the best meals I have had in quite some time, truly spectacular and, for the first time, I managed to go the full three courses finishing with an epic rice pudding with roasted figs and tutti fruitti icecream. Okay, I confess that I chose the pud purely on the basis of that ice-cream and I was not disappointed. The Chilli Pickle,17 Jubilee Street, Brighton, BN1 1GE 01273 900 383 thechillipickle.com Eating in hurry is not so bad, if you choose well and it is certainly worth looking out for those special offers and fixed price menus. If you want to spend more and take longer then forget doing it on the same night as a trip to the theatre or to a concert.

INTELLIGENTLY EPIC here are no intelligent epics like 1962’s Lawrence of Arabia today and in my opinion there never will be again. The overuse of computer-generated effects has numbed us to the awe and wonder they once produced. A modern film running at over three and a half hours with an iffy plot and no women would never capture our attention and hearts in the way that looking at an image and knowing it has been created using just a man and a camera does. Peter O'Toole makes an unforgettable debut as TE Lawrence, the Welsh-born British Army officer who campaigned with Arab irregular forces during WWI. He is a brilliant and volatile leader who, after being sent from Cairo to the Arabian desert to find Prince Faisal of Mecca, finds himself leading an Arab revolt against the Turks for the British. Lawrence of Arabia takes a critical view of British imperialism in the Middle East – depicting it as cold, calculating and resented by the locals. There is nothing simple about O'Toole's Lawrence, who discovers in himself a taste for sensual ruthlessness and is wracked with self-hate after being captured and beaten by the Turks. It being 1962, the film only hints at the sexual assaults the real Lawrence wrote of. When crossing the desert, Lawrence meets Sherif Ali of the Harith played by Omar Sharif, an Egyptian superstar who was reluctantly cast in preference to white actors. He clearly has the sharpest lines with the crackling jealousy and macho tension between the impossibly handsome O'Toole and the equally impossibly handsome Sharif hovering on the brink of the sexual. Whilst this is not historically accurate it does have some grounding. The real Lawrence wrote admiringly of his "man-on-man loves", and biographers conclude that he was most likely gay. The story of ‘Lawrence’ is not founded on violent battle scenes or cheap melodrama, but on director David Lean's ability to imagine what it would feel like for an audience to see a speck appear on the horizon of the desert and slowly grow into a human being. Moreover on Lawrence as a personality (the persona that Lean, O’Toole and screenwriter Robert Bolt create) is a sexually and socially unconventional man. He is so out of touch with the Arab existence and the squabbles between tribes that he skims above them. It’s imperial overconfidence at its best but he rallies the splintered desert tribes and wins a war against the Turks. y showbiz hero for July? Easy. That burly security bloke who hauled a stubbornly resistant Damon Albarn off the stage at the end of his Roskilde Festival set in Denmark a couple of weeks ago. I say "at the end", it was almost four hours after the scheduled end, that was the whole problem. Damon and his Africa Express pals had been playing for nigh on five hours, dawn was approaching, and the man in charge felt that, well, no doubt theirs was a jolly super din, but maybe it was time to say bye-bye. Basically, Damon, put a sock in it, pal. That was the gist of his message. Damon didn't want to do any such thing with his hosiery, however, and insisted on playing on. So in the end, not surprisingly, the organisers' patience ran out. In stepped Mr Burly – and off, at last, went Mr Albarn. Nothing nasty or confrontational, just very effective. Now, I have to say I've nothing against Damon Albarn. I'm actually a huge fan. And in all honesty, I'm not fussed if this massively extended performance of his was breaking any licensing rules, keeping weary festival workers from their beds or what-have-you. I just happen to believe there's an optimum time limit for festival sets, gigs etc. Just as there is, in fact, for many other generally pleasurable things in life, such as films, plays, TV series, books, dinner parties, holidays etc. A point beyond which pleasure turns to purgatory and, broadly keen as you are, you'd like it to stop. Festival sets, where an act is part of an extensive line-up, should never last more than 90 minutes, and only then if they're at or near the top of the bill. Gigs where they're the act everyone's come to see? Two hours, tops. Films? You've got 105 minutes, then I'm walking out. Plays? Say what you have to say in a couple of hours, please, before my buttock cramps kick in. Holidays? Please, not a whole fortnight. Ten days is plenty. TV series? Six one-hour episodes or three 90-minute ones, I'm quite flexible here. But none of that 24-week, season-upon-season nonsense. Dinner parties? Hey, come in, lovely to see you, please stay for four hours, then kindly do one. Books? Two hundred and twenty-two words – exactly like the original paperback, funnily enough, of Gullhanger: Or How I Learned To Love Brighton And Hove Albion, apparently now available as an Amazon Kindle e-book for an irresistible 99p. And, before you ask the inevitable – magazine columns? Four hundred and fifty words. On the dot. Ignoring hyphens. Count them if you don't believe me. Mike Ward is the TV Critic of the Daily Star and the TV Editor of the Daily Express Saturday magazine. Hear him every Monday afternoon with Guy Lloyd on Brighton’s Juice 107.2

PIER PRESSURE he battlelines are drawn. The House of Krog is divided. Wandering past the poor old West Pier this week, the Dane is adamant it’s living on borrowed time and should take its blot off the Sussex seascape. Personally, I hope it withstands many storms to come, not least for the inspiration it continues to provide local artists. It’s always a pleasure to encounter those creative Janet Brooke types who rise to the challenge of capturing Brighton’s iconic landmarks without resorting to cliché. I’m thinking in particular of printmaker Janet Brooke, who specialises in the urban landscape. During her long career, Janet has been inspired by a rich variety of locations, from the East End and City of London to destinations in the Far East, such as Hong Kong and Singapore. But since her move back here, the place that has fired Janet Brooke Janet’s imagination most is Brighton. Her prints of our multi-faceted city evoke a clear sense of place, making the familiar fresh from the artist’s point of view. You can see Janet’s work at the Orso Major and Bankside John McSweeney galleries in London. Or arrange a visit to her Brighton studio. Last chance: hot foot it to the Hop Gallery in Lewes and you’ll just catch the final week of ‘Capturing the Spectacle’ – painter John McSweeney’s first out-ofLondon show in more than 20 years. Subtitled ‘Paintings of Modern Life’, the collection combines photography and digital editing techniques with a mature painting style to explore complex issues of our time. These include themes such as the influence of technology and the ubiquitous need to be ‘constantly connected’, loss of privacy and the trade-off between safety and intrusion by the state, the ageing process, the property boom, and conflicting cultures. Until 26 July. www.artymagazines.com Twitter @brightonsarty

THE MAGIC OF CHICHESTER The Sussex theatre festival that spells West End Success ver the last ten years Chichester Festival Theatre has an enviable reputation for staging extraordinary work of all kinds, new plays, classic plays, comedy, tragedy and of course musicals. Their reputation for revisiting classic works of musical theatre is second to none and so many of these great productions have transferred to the West End where they have gone on to receive even further accolades and awards. CFT have tackled not only the biggest hits of the musical stage but also some lesser known works, all with the same energy and style, and their commitment to great theatre of all kinds, from those classics to new plays like Enron, has served them well. Critical acclaim runs side by side with their ability to draw international theatre stars to Chichester, all keen to work with the excellent team that gathers there each season. So it is no surprise that right now there is a tangible buzz about the forthcoming production of Mack & Mabel. This musical comedy depicts the true romance between Hollywood legends Mack Sennett

O

and Mabel Normand, two trailblazers of the silent film era. Sennet was the genius behind the Keystone Cops films, an obsessive and self confessed workaholic. He fell in love with screen star Mabel and she with him but the story revolves around his inability to show affection, the key to show’s biggest number I Won’t Send Roses. It’s a great song and for this new production is in the more than capable hands, or should I say voice, of Michael Ball. Ball is a consummate professional, a charming man with a keen sense of humour and a tendency to self-deprecation. None of this however will detract from his ability to nail a role as was seen in his acclaimed portrayal of the eponymous Sweeney Todd in C’s amazing production. So dark was his performance that on the opening nights people were going to the box office and asking for refunds as Ball was not playing the role. Of course he was but this was perhaps his darkest and his finest hour and the grim persona that he had adopted was barely recognisable as the fun man that

we know from his concert, radio and TV appearances. On his recent concert tour Ball previewed I Won’t Send Roses and the audience went wild. No doubt he will do the same when Mack & Mabel opens. Mack & Mabel is also choreographed by Stephen Mear, another award winning Brighton based theatre star whose work has been seen on the international stage and at Chichester as well as choreography he has directed She Loves Me, a charming and seldom revived musical. But his catalogue of hits is too long to relate here and his work is best seen to be appreciated. Key to much of CFT’s recent success has to be the work of Jonathan Church. His directorial

• LATEST 7 14 www.thelatest.co.uk •

skills coupled with his programming have been very much the foundation of the company’s success. Earlier this year Artistic Director Jonathan Church and Executive Director Alan Finch announced that they are to step down from their respective roles at Chichester Festival Theatre at the end of September 2016, following Festival 2016. There is little doubt that they will be much missed – but that they have set down a solid base for the theatre’s future success. Mack & Mabel opened on 13 July and runs until 5 September Tickets: £25, £34 16 – 25 year olds: £8.50 – on sale for all performances from 10 August, Box Office cft.org.uk, 01243 781312

Feast on July’s comedy offerings, before August snaps them away s much as Brighton and the South East is the centre of our world, for one month of the year the Scottish capital becomes the focus of the comedy universe as lots and lots of comics (did we agree that the collective noun was a ‘giggle’?) converge for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. A show gallery of talent for the world’s TV executives and Mike Wozniak venue bookers, August goes pretty darn quiet for most of the rest of the country when this exodus takes place. So, in this last week of July, feast your giggle-gut on a mixture of practically-finished Edinburgh preview shows and local innovative funnies. Over at the Caroline Of Brunswick the next seven days serve up preview shows from Mark Steel, Nathan Caton, Mike Wozniak and Matt Forde, as well a good selection of local comics at Podium Comedy on Saturday – many of whom will also have razor-sharp material they’re preparing to take up North for the first time. Otherplace at The Basement is also playing host to a mixture of previews, respected local talent, and brand new comedy voices. It’s worth noting that at this stage in the year what you’re essentially getting when you attend a preview is a fully formed top dollar TV-comic show for under a tenner. Many of them will probably be back in October for the Brighton Comedy Festival, at which point they’ll cost twice as much for a ticket and just be two months older. Not a whole lot of tweaking going on in those two months, so do bag yourself an entertainment bargain. Anyway, over at The Basement this week you can grab yourself preview shows from Beasts and Tom Parry, as well Off The Cuff Stands Up – combining the skills of the ten-year-established comedy improv troupe with turns from guest stand ups including Sameena Zehra, James McDonnell, Dan Fardell and Roz Ryan. Plus there’s your monthly dose of Rabbit In The Headlights, Brighton’s longest serving new act and new material night on Friday. Plus, for even more previews just mosey over to Komedia for shows from Tiff Stevenson, Carl Donnelly, Adam Hess, Julian Deane, Gareth Richards and Iain Sterling. So get your fix of laughter and breathe it in deeply. There’s plenty in town to tickle all of the senses. www.carolineofbrunswick.co.uk www.otherplacebrighton.co.uk www.komedia.co.uk/brighton

One of the all-time Jamaican greats hasn't played in Brighton for ten years… ou'll most probable know the songs 'You Can Get It If You Really Want It', 'Many Rivers to Cross' and 'The Harder They Come', a trio of songs from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s that helped to popularise reggae and ska music here in the UK. The only currently living musician to hold the Order of Merit, the highest honour that can be granted by the Jamaican government for achievement in the arts and sciences, Jimmy Cliff started writing songs at an early age. "One night I was walking past a record store and restaurant as they were closing, pushed myself in and convinced one of them, Leslie Kong, to go into the recording business, starting with me," he has said. His career took off when 'Hurricane Hattie' became a hit, while he was aged just 14, in the early ‘60s. Island Records, via their founder Chris Blackwell, started to take an interest and in 1967 Cliff released his debut album with them. An early single, Vietnam, was called by Bod Dylan 'the best protest song he had ever heard', but it wasn't until the 1969 self-title album that Cliff had a big hit, with the song Wonderful World, Beautiful People. However, it was his starring role in the Jamaican film The Harder They Come (where Cliff plays a character pursuing a career in music, before he falls in to a life of crime), and the

accompanying soundtrack helped to bring reggae and Jamaican culture to an international audience.

After a brief conversion to Islam (where he took the name El Hadj Naïm Bachir) Cliff returned to music in the ‘80s, remaining largely in the public eye, including touring with Kool & The Gang, release the Grammy Award winning album Cliff Hanger, singing on the Rolling Stones' Dirty Work album, singing with Elvis Costello, and enjoying a big hit with his version of 'I Can See Clearly Now'. As well as uprising a career in film, more recently he performed at the closing ceremony at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the opening ceremony of the 2007 World Cup, and saw (perhaps rather unfortunately) his song You Can Get It If You Really Want adopted by the Conservative Party for their annual conference. His 2011 album Rebirth continues to showcase his beautiful and soulful tenor voice, and his love of all things ska, reggae and rocksteady. A thoroughly joyous entertainment for kids that I, as an adult (well almost) really enjoyed. Mike Carter proves once again that he knows how to craft a show for young people and what a joy to see this classic Kipling story uncluttered by the famous Disney songs. Those songs, good as they are, did become the core of the film, leaving the moral tale lost in the land of animation. At Emporium we get the Kipling delivered by a strong cast including an extremely well rehearsed group of kids who take on the roles of wolf cubs and monkeys with great charm. Mowgli is played with appropriate innocence and naivety by Kamari Romeo, but from time to time his vocals get lost. Rich Nair makes a splendid Shere Khan and Michael Adams is wonderful as the gentle voice of Akela. Amy Sutton is seductively slippery as aKa and Suzanne Proctor’s Bagheera is sexily sinister, although her makeup was somewhat lacking. Gordon Winter makes an hilarious Chief Monkey with his insane white Rastafarian performance and terrifying darting eyes, a superb performance. Doug Devaney once again treats us to a wonderful characterization as Baloo the bear, big in every sense he really gets to the soft heart of the character rather than Disney’s simple buffoonery. Director James Weisz gives us another great show, a simply lovely set filled with atmosphere, clever

costuming and puppets, and a great balance of story to fun. If I have one criticism, and this will seem peevish given the excellence that this company deliver on such small budgets and limited resources, it is that the lighting , whilst moody and atmospheric, lacks focus on the actors, often leaving them in the dark and losing the impact of facial expression and sadly diction. I hope that as this excellent theatre grows there will be enough money in the pot to remedy this. Three cheers for another excellent show that will no doubt inspire kids to be the theatre goers of the future. Andrew Kay

Seann Walsh – 28 Seann Walsh is in his element on the stage downstairs at Komedia and at this, his homecoming end of tour show, more so than ever. ’28’ is a show looking back at the year of growing Walsh has had, moving in with his girlfriend, curbing his drinking and wrangling with Netflix. As much as he may be an excellent mimic of McIntyre, which we enjoyed a glimpse of, he holds the exact same strengths

with none of the backlash. Identifying universal truths and combining it with an unrehearsed likeability and unselfconscious interactions with the audience prove testament to both his professionalism and how much he is clearly still enjoying his job. An Audience With Helen Lederer The main issue with this show (informal chit chat with her good friend Jo Good) is that it tried to do everything and instead did very little. Clearly designed to promote her new novel, the format should have centred on that premise, informing her fans on her writing process/inspirations and book development. Instead we got a brief back story on her life, some career anecdotes, a bit about the book, her various TV appearances (all for the money apparently, refreshingly honest in one way, a merciless sad indictment of the state of TV in another) and some poems from the audience (I would argue cynically designed to fill the show). She’s led an interesting life and she’s engaging to watch. Life, story show or book promotion, choose one and stick to it. Connaught Studio, Worthing, 9 July 2015 Lee Stevens

THURSDAY 23 87 Stone: Fat Chance Of Work – Supersized Channel Five, 9pm It’s not like jobs grow on trees for the most able bodied of society, but for those on the extreme end of obesity it becomes a physical impossibility and living is a balance of benefits and carers. 21-stone Debbie relies on her husband, and 35-stone Les wants a gastric band so he can work.

Javone Prince Show BBC2, 10pm Javine Prince’s new comedy series is a mix of comedy, live music and sketches. With BBC3 moving to online only, it’s good to see that new comedy is still making it through to the terrestrial channels regardless. Joining Mr Prince are the marvellous Mica Paris, as well as musical director Omar.

The Ugly Face Of Disability Hate Crime BBC3, 9pm BBC3 is rather good at asking questions of people they’d rather not face. Like why disability hate crimes go under reported, underrecorded and under people’s radar. Adam Pearson shines a light at this dark corner, questioning attitudes towards disability and disfigurement.
