here is nothing quite like having a good old splash in the sea, especially in Brighton. I’ve heard the nay-sayers muttering about pollution – “Folly!”, I reply, strongly. Brighton has one of the cleanest beaches around, and I’ve been told that by official style folk in the know. Others say it’s too cold – it really really isn’t. Truly, if that’s too cold for you after an afternoon of warming in the sun then you might want to invest in some Lemsip and a cardi (or similar cold-related medicine). Yes, when you paddle in it will feel a little chilly to start off with, but give yourself a good old dunk under and within 30 seconds it’s a perfectly comfortable temperature. My only issue is the getting in and getting out of the water. Bare feet beware, them stones want to be at their most awkward when you’re at your most precarious. My swimming shoes, purchased for only a tenner at the optimistic bucket and spade stalls between the piers, are brilliant at getting past this hurdle. Literally. Previously I’ve swum in trainers and in flip flops in order to bypass aggressive ground in my quest for a quick dip. The first of these dragged me down with their weight, and the second added an extra confused buoyancy when I tucked them into the sides of my swimmers so that they didn’t float off. I’ve done the research and shoes actually designed to swim in seem to be the best bet. Who knew? And then I’m away, bobbing about in the sea and trying to get everyone else to join me. Doing somersaults and getting confused as to which way I’m facing once I surface. While the summer’s here and the air con’s on the blink, it’s churlish not to don trunks or a cossie and jump right in. It’s celebratory. And by golly does it wash a day at the office/shop/teaching improv/insert-your-own-Brighton-job-here away like it never existed.

hope you have all seen the fantastic images of Pluto by now. The American space agency's New Horizons probe has been returning images of Pluto that include a view of the dwarf planet's strange icy plains. As reported in BBC news, Alan Stern, the mission's chief scientist commented: "We now have an isolated, small planet that's showing activity after 4.5 billion years." Prof Stern said the discovery would "send a lot of geophysicists back to the drawing boards". The image shows mountains at the edge of a heart-like region that are up to 11,000ft (3,300m) high and which team members have compared to North America's Rocky Mountains. It really is exciting stuff but will require textbooks to be rewritten. It does make one wonder though, at what point will we realise that textbooks in schools, especially scientific ones, are not really a viable option since they cannot be updated fast enough? Maybe we need a combination of both, a small reference textbook and then leave the rest to technology and reliable resources on the internet? I went to a conference recently at the National STEM Centre in York, which was on “programmable components”. I was very pleased with myself when I actually built my own robot and got it to work. The presenter highlighted that we just haven’t got the teachers with the skills to teach this type of stuff in schools; schools within the UK are falling behind at an alarming rate. It was therefore reassuring to know though that I had left PACA with the students and staff designing courses and targets for Lego Mindstorm robots. The University of Sussex Team called ‘Robogals’ had come in for the day with their robotic equipment and the children were having loads of fun. School has finished now for summer but I am looking forward to a fresh term where we will be following a project-based learning approach for STEM. To start with we are looking at Astronomy projects, which will fit in with our observatory and array of telescopes that we have and then we will be moving onto programmable components. Following on from the success of the winning “3D Interactive Periodic Table Project” at the Big Bang Show (described by judges as an excellent concept showing an excellent mix of skills and knowledge), we will be rolling out a KS3 STEM agenda developing Educational Learning Fun (ELF) games designed for the classroom by pupils for pupils. Who said learning wasn’t fun! A huge thank you to Anthony from the University of Sussex who volunteered both his time and expertise on this project. Also thank you to Melanie, Joel and Dr Kate Howland from the University of Sussex for helping at the After School club. We look forward to working with you some more in September!

HE WON’T SEND ROSES
Michael Ball stars in the thrilling musical tale of early movie making at Chichester Festival Theatre
ased on the true romance between Hollywood legends Mack Sennett and Mabel Normand, this musical comedy received eight Tony Award nominations when it opened on Broadway in 1974. This thrilling tale of trailblazers and stars is widely admired for its outstanding score including hits I Won’t Send Roses and Time Heals Everything. Not long ago, and without saying a word, a group of pioneering filmmakers changed the world. Helped by heroes in capes, and girls tied to the tracks, they made stars out of street kids, and riches from rags. But for writer, director, producer and owner of Keystone Motion Picture Studios Mack Sennett, forging a film is the easy part – compared to working, and falling in love, with a stunning one-off like Mabel. This dazzling musical comedy is both a poignant love story and a riveting tribute to the grit and glamour of the era of silent movies. Music and lyrics are by Jerry Herman (La Cage aux Folles) and the book by Michael Stewart (Barnum, 42nd Street), the multi award-winning team behind the classic Broadway musical Hello, Dolly! Olivier Award-winner Michael Ball returns to Chichester to play Mack Sennett, following his celebrated performance in Sweeney Todd. His other recent credits include the BBC drama That Day We Sang and Hairspray in the West End and on tour. He also has a successful recording and broadcasting career,
and completed a UK concert tour in Spring 2015. Rebecca LaChance makes her Chichester debut as Mabel. Her recent credits include Betty and understudy Carole in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical on Broadway and Johnny Baseball directed by Gordon Greenberg.

ANDREW KAY I WANT TO LIVE HERE Digging deep into a new project I start to look at what I love about this city
N
ever one to say no I have just started a new project, again for our rather marvellous TV wing. Having made seven episodes of International Chef Exchange, and 13 of Cook It! I have been asked to take a look at our broadcast property programme. It seems logical to me as I have been a part of Latest Homes since before issue one and I think there are very few issues in our 740 copy catalogue in which my face and words do not appear. Fifteen years ago when we launched I have to say that friends did rather take the Michael out of me for having to work with estate agents. Back then their reputation was pretty old fashioned and most people saw them as being the enemy. Very soon I discovered that they were humans just like the rest of us and humans who were starting to embrace a new world, new technology and new ideas. Property sales and letting were bound to change and they were going to be the people that would make those changes. Today I count many of those agents amongst my friends and colleagues –okay, we all still do the shiny suit and too much hair product gags, but they are a nice bunch and much improved I have to say by the increasing number of very professional women involved in their industry – a very good thing. Latest Homes: I Want to Live Here!, our new show, will be a reflection of the city’s property world and in planning this I have come to see and realise what it is

that makes Brighton & Hove the best place to live in the UK. A few weeks ago I had a short break in London. I lived there for many years, I loved it too, the hustle and the bustle back then excited me. In a way it still does, but my word how uncomfortable is it now?
There are very few issues in our 740 copy catalogue in which my face and words do not appear Okay, some of that discomfort is due to my crumbling bones, yomping across the West End at 59 is not comparable to doing it at 30 or 18 even! I enjoyed the break but there were things that horrified me on my return. I had completely forgotten how filthy the capital is. The clothes I wore were so grubby, a fact that after 25 years working here I had forgotten. And don’t even ask about handkerchiefs – yeuk. No give me Brighton & Hove any day. I have been somewhat dismayed of late at the petty whining nonsense that seems to crop up on social media sites, you know the stuff; 30 Reasons why I Hate Brighton, that kind of thing. Well I have a message for all those detractors, if you don’t like it leave. You are free to make that

choice – and should. Funnily enough I thought that a lot of the complaints were actually the things that I like about the city. I like the buzz of students from abroad, okay they clog the pavements – but they also fill our coffers. I’ve said it before and I will say it probably until I am blue in the face – Brightonians are all too ready to say nay rather than yay. How I laughed to see the launch of a petition to stop the building of the i360 – months if not years after the project was underway. There are still moaners on the web who seem to think that they can, with a few signatures, stop it. Take a look, it’s there, you’re too late – and given that it’s here then why not get behind it – or do you want to make it a failure. I want it to succeed, whether I like it or not is irrelevant. Funnily enough whilst researching for the new property show with property man Andy Garth he discovered a planned viewing platform from the 1960s, not unlike the current design except that the circular viewing doughnut was static. It never got built of course. Andy’s archival shop on Western Road is a treasure trove of local knowledge in many forms and I could spend hours there – which is what I will be doing as it will feature weekly on the new show as will he. Eyes peeled then for the forthcoming launch, a celebration of the city and why we all want to live here. THE NUN’S STORY he Nun’s Story certainly doesn’t offer the positive depiction of religious life common in 1950s Hollywood, but it’s not an antireligious or anti-Catholic depiction either. It's a challenging and controversial work, but impossible to dismiss. Audrey Hepburn stars as Gabrielle van der Mal, a young woman who enters convent life with high hopes and ideals, but finds disappointing stumblingblocks that challenge her vows of poverty, chastity and obedience-creating obstacles that are potentially insurmountable. Adapted from Kathryn Hulme’s novel, itself partly based on the experiences of a reallife ex-nun, Gabrielle's struggles as she becomes Sister Luke are complex and relatable. Having been brought up by her respectable, doctor father she originally joins the order with the hope of being able to battle tropical diseases in the Congo. Sister Luke's difficulties with the demands of religious life are brought out by her chosen vocation within the order: why should she cut off an important conversation with a patient when she hears the call to prayer? One insidious moment involves a twisted mother superior suggesting that she display her humility by deliberately failing a nursing exam. Yet, there is no effort to depict all nuns as warped or frustrated; there are obviously bad apples, but also warm, sympathetic, well-adjusted women who feel much for the young women in their care. A different mother superior later confirms that the first's advice was wrong and that Sister Luke should try her hardest in exams. Once her studies are completed she is sent first to work with mental patients in Belgium before being assigned to the Congo, where she hopes to work with natives. The film begins to pick up pace at this point: whilst, personally, I enjoy watching the intricacies of entering a convent and see their daily lives as fascinating, I'm aware that not everyone else does! Audrey Hepburn quietly commands the screen, conveying more in the flicker of an eye than most actresses could do by shouting. Her struggles, though rarely directly spoken, are manifest in each scene, growing stronger as time passes. There is never a moment where the audience doesn't know what Sister Luke is thinking, even if the person she's speaking to is clueless. Sister Luke's troubles with her faith are only intensified when she meets Dr Fortunati (played by Peter Finch) and the war breaks out. Sister Luke approaches her vocation with all-or-nothing commitment but after suffering a wrenching personal tragedy she struggles with hatred and forgiveness. Is this the Christian ideal itself called into question? No. Whilst Sister Luke has worthy principles and goals, in the end none of us can really give our all. The film is ahead of its time in calmly refusing to take a stand. Neither Sister Luke nor the order is responsible for her unhappiness, life is just something that happens and not everyone fits in certain spaces. The dramatic moments in this film are few and far between but it's never boring. For more excellent classic films, and reviews of what is out at the cinema this week, tune in to LatestTV’s PostFeature, Wednesday at 6.30pm, catch up online or check @PostFeatureTV for details

ANDREW KAY
BREAKFAST IN BRIGHTON
For those moments when fruit and granola simply will not do love breakfast, it's one of the most varied feasts of the day and comes in so many varieties. Of late my weekday breakfast has come in the form of a Nutribullet fruit and veg drink, and I am really enjoying that. But the truth is that when push comes to shove I still love a good old fashioned fry up. Brighton is a pretty good place to find breakfast but with one rather hefty complaint – please do not offer me a breakfast menu when you only open for business after 9am. Too many places offer a decent breakfast but not at the time of day when I want or need to eat it. Get real and call it brunch please to avoid any confusion. Last week two dear friends were in town and suggested that we meet up for a late breakfast on the Sunday morning. I suggested an Indian brunch at Curry Leaf Cafe but that was knocked out of court as Mrs D has a thing about poached eggs. I scratched my head and then remembered how good breakfast used to be at Hove Kitchen. The eggs there were always of the best quality. Of course Hove kitchen changed hands and then disappeared to be re-born. I've not been as yet, having been put off in the interim period by the worst coffee I have ever been served. The owner of Hove Kitchen, Ben, has now opened Avenue in Church Road and, given a recent dinner and an excellent Saturday brunch, I felt confident that it would be a good choice. We met at 10.30, I was a little early and settled in with a truly excellent double shot latte. When Mr & Mrs D arrived we perused the menu and I am glad to say all chose different items. Mrs D had

Mr D went for the full English, no surprises there and it too impressed. I applaud the inclusion of Heinz beans and especially as they come in a dish so the juices do not run everywhere. I'm not a baked bean fan but if I do have them then I want my own Boston baked beans, several hours in the making so a rare treat, or Heinz. Mr D likes his HP sauce too and apologised for dribbling it across the plate and not putting a puddle on the side of the plate each to their own Mr D. He also added a slice of Stornaway black pudding and prompted me to do the same, even though it was not a natural side to my buttermilk pancakes

with rips bacon and maple syrup. What a triumph those pancakes were too, you could really taste the sour edge of the buttermilk, the bacon was perfectly cooked and plentiful and there was more than enough syrup, served in a small jug on the side. Avenue delivers a tip top breakfast to start the day for sure. Sometimes all I want though is a coffee and a bacon or sausage butty. A few days later I happened to be in the Lanes early for a meeting. Wandering around I happened on a fashionable new restaurant that deals in breakfast dishes. I was peckish and took a look, but ran away when I saw the prices. Peckish was not going to make me part with that sort of money, no matter how trendy it is. I resorted to an old favourite, a tiny cafe in Regents arcade that does a decent sausage butty, good coffee and delightful service and all for sensible money. They have papers too, a rare treat for me these days. There's no pretence, they do what they do and do it well and I love that. I still like my coffee from Small Batch but my last food there was disappointing, a very dry croque monsieur sadly, especially as I normally enjoy their food, but the coffee is great. If you want a decent fry-up then head over to New England House where the cafe does a great job for a good price and the service is a delight. After being there for so many years I will miss that. NOT AVERSE TO VERSE In a move from stage this week we look at the 2015 Sussex Poets Competition righton & Hove Arts Council are delighted to have launched the Sussex Poets Competition for the second time, following the tremendous success of the first one in 2013/14. We hope this will become an annual event alongside our Spring Art Exhibition and our Drama Awards. This year’s competition opened on 11 May and will run for 3 months, and we are particularly pleased to have engaged Clare Best, local prize-winning poet and author, university teacher and facilitator of Creative Writing and Writer in Residence at the University of Brighton as our Judge (see photo and poem). We see the Poetry Competition as a great opportunity to encourage people across, or with any connection to, Sussex to flex their poetic aspirations and gain the opportunity to test their abilities through the judgement of a distinguished poet. And possibly to win a significant prize and some publicity into the bargain. This year the poetry competition is supported by the University of Brighton College of Arts and Humanities, and their two centres for contemporary writing C21 and Work, Write Live. The University of Sussex School of English and Alumni and Development Team are also working with us and providing sponsorship and support. And on the commercial front, Brighton Taxis have come on board, while Higgidy of Shoreham maintain the

JUST GOOD FRIENDS
SUN KIL MOON Boxing, music, love and death. These make up Mark Kozelek's mind
Sometimes, it’s not just the people on the stage that have created the comedy. veryone knows that behind every great film or powerful play, there’s a talented director who has a vision. Yes, there’s the writer, the performer(s), the face of the thing – but it’s that perspective from the behind the fourth wall that can prove utterly invaluable. It’s a little known thing that comedy shows can also involve a director’s contribution. When you think about it it certainly makes sense, with the amount of sketch shows, improvisation troupes, as well as comic plays, plus some stand-up performances that clearly benefit from a perspective that hasn’t written every single word. A director’s input can help untangle a melee of ideas into a bouquet of conceptual bounty. It can be brutal, and it can also help celebrate the real gems of a piece. On Sunday the multi-award nominated comedy duo Max & Ivan are coming to town with their brand new show, perversely called ‘The End’. These are the brains that came up with the legendary ‘The Wrestling’ in the Edinburgh Fringe twice, gathering a Who’s Who of comedy talent together to roughly follow a linear evening of wrestling matches pairing comedians with actual British wrestlers, along with ringside commentary, old skool grudges developing, as well as peril and absolutely marvellous resolution. They put that together – which was epic, with only minor performing roles for themselves. This is their show, and with its own fabulous twisting and turning, plotting and conniving, leaps and lurches. And as such, they are the stars – and they’ve got someone else to direct them. Tom Parry, aka one third of acclaimed sketch group Pappy’s, is taking up directing duties for Max & Ivan in this instance. ‘The End’ is an epic tale of a small town on the day of its destruction, which is a concept that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Pappy’s longform show either. It’s good to have friends. It’s professionally useful to have friends who understand the field you work in of performance comedy and can collaborate to make good things become brilliant. Max & Ivan – The End, Sunday 2 August, 8pm, £10, Studio Theatre, Brighton Dome, 01273 709709, www.brightondome.org

amed after an obscure (well, not to the South Koreans) superflyweight world champion boxer, Mark Kozelek is also known as the man who fronted Red House Painters, a band that were signed to Ivo Watts-Rusell's 4AD label in 1992, after being handed a demo recording via Mark Eitzel, of American Music Club. They released several acclaimed albums with the label, before being dropped. Red House Painters subsequently dissolved, before arising again as Sun Kil Moon, and released their debut album in 2003, Ghosts of the Great Highway. Kozelek has subsequently said that the name change was a ruse to gain interest from critics again; the move worked, for it outsold all their previous albums. But it also expressed a deep interest in boxing; not only as a sport, but as a metaphor for life insofar as the fighting spirit exemplified by boxers (as opposed to the fact that for every winner, there is a loser) is highly appreciated by Kozelek. Indeed, he went so far as to spend 17k on a pair of tickets for the recent 'Fight of the Century' between Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Manny Pacquiao. Although many would argue this was money badly spent (the fight was a bit of a damp squid, and rather one-sided), his love of boxing continues with several
mentions within the new album, including a song title Ali/Spinks 2, a reference to the second title fight between Muhammad Ali and Leon Spinks in 1978.

The album, made with the help of Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley, is an extension of last year's Benji album; highly narrative, almost in diarist style, with changes of tones, style, and tempo throughout. Kozelek's words centre around the aforementioned boxing, but also music - with plenty of references to his formative listening years - the women in his life, childhood and later life reminiscing, friends, and a worrying plethora of sick, dying or dead people. Above all, Kozelek strikes the boxer's pose in taking the rough with the smooth, perhaps just glad to have made it this far and with plenty to look forward to as he approaches 50. It's idiosyncratic, and another reminder that Kozelek is surely one of the best post-American grunge songwriters out there, and a damn fine guitarist to boot. Of course I need not have worried. Jonathan Church and his team have cast their magic once again over a Broadway classic and breathed into it an energy and sense of drama that in the past has seemed lacking. The simple settings, based mainly on clever stage craft rather than technology, work well and seemlessly, a triumph on a thrust stage. The band is on top form too, conducted with a real sense of purpose but still sensitive in the tender moments. The company are super slick, beautiful choral ensemble work with a great period feel and precision dancing throughout. Rebecca LaChance makes a great Mabel, gauche at the start, then needy and vulnerable as her stardom rises and she realises that Mack is never going to give her what she most desires. Michael Ball does a first class job as always. The voice is undeniably on top form but it is surely his acting skills that we need to recognise and applaud. We saw this in Sweeney Todd and once again he makes his entrance and is almost unrecognisable. The cheery bloke that tours arenas with his laddish charm, can shuffle onto a theatre stage an elderly man – convincingly.
Watch Latest Entertainment on
Finally to the choreography, a work of genius that should see Stephen Mear lauded as best in the business. Mear has a great sense of style and ability to recreate a period feel whilst at the same time pushing his dancers to extremes of skill and excellence. His beach scene, the Keystone Cops and a thrilling tap routine are all breathtakingly good. Mack And Mabel is a tragic tale of selfishness and unrequited love and the bitter ending makes it all the better. CFT have made a flawed show into a masterpiece. Andrew Kay
Micachu and the Shapes If you get on board with Mica Levi’s finely controlled dirgey music, the rewards can be rich, and the live experience is no different. The set was tight at around 45 minutes and felt like even less; the lolloping, intricately drummed rhythms and trebly clanging guitars melding perfectly with keyboards to forge a unique sound. Mostly focusing on new material, the songs were all strong. ‘Oh Baby’ was the highlight in fact with underwater keyboard stabs and a slow pace straying almost into the realm of balladry. Fan favourite ‘Lips’ was the only song of the encore, but with such inventive
musicianship the audience didn’t need this set to be prolonged. Green Door Store, 20 July 2015 ★★★★ Joe Fuller
Top Hat This award-winning show captures the essence of 1930s screwball comedies and high society elegance. The plot involves mistaken identities and allows the show to globe-trot from Broadway to London to Venice. There is so much to enjoy with flowing gowns, Art Deco sets and some of Irving Berlin’s most-loved tunes. The phenomenal Alan Burkitt and the magical Charlotte Gooch are perfectly matched as star-crossed lovers and their dancing is flawless as they lead the cast in big production numbers such as ‘Cheek To Cheek’ and ‘Putting On The Ritz’. MONDAY 3 A Very British Brothel Channel 4, 10pm Go to Sheffield and set up a mother and daughter massage parlour, converting a pub into a brothel that specialises in the services of more mature women. Not really the tag line the tourist board is looking for, but this documentary looking at the dayto-day workings of the business is certainly eye-opening.
Under The Dome Channel Five, 10pm To quote a former Big Brother housemate: “Who is she?!!” What is the hold Christine has over the town, and is it really wise for Joe and Norrie to question the community’s new rules. Kinda get the feeling that they’ll get more than the usual teenage grounding if they go up against this ‘establishment’.
New Girl E4, 8pm It’s grand when you can be mates with your ex, support them through life’s little quirks as a pal rather than a partner. Except sometimes potential new partners can have a bit of an issue with your presence. Fools! Which is why Nick pretends to be gay when he meets Jess’ new date Ian. What could go wrong?
