hen does ‘old’ cross over into ‘vintage’? My mother asked me this the other day. She’d been talking to a friend of my brother’s who had asked after my mother’s dress. Is it vintage? “No,” Mum had replied, “I bought it new a long
time ago.” The dress in question came into creation some time around the 1960s or 1970s, but the question seems to have been hanging about since the 1980s when baseball jackets and looking like a Pink Lady or a T-Bird was all the rage. My grandmother used to have what she called her ‘Clothes Museum’, which included a flapper dress that had belonged to my great great aunt as well as several random hair pieces – so even before the term was coined, old bits and pieces were something special. This regard didn’t extend as far as my grandma’s own old clothes, which my cousins and I adored when they joined the assortment known as the Dressing Up Box. Thank you for the cast-offs, the source of homespun pantomimes and early cross-dressing. It seems to me that if you can own the idea of having something ‘vintage’ that you bought as new, you can own the idea of being slightly ‘vintage’ yourself. Admittedly this does mean that you don’t have to be very old to fall into this category, which will be a comfort to those who weren’t too keen on belonging to it in the first place. Like me. I was moving some blanket boxes around and going through the contents when I stumbled upon the handheld arcade games of my own youth. Apparently they’re too old for CeX on Western Road. I need to take these bad boys over to Snoopers Paradise. I own vintage games, including a generic Pacman imitation and another that allows you to score at basketball with on-screen explanations that appear written in Japanese script. Collectable. Niche. Vintage, in fact.

Two films out soon from directors Noah Baumbach & Judd Apatow t's a good month for indie film releases, although whether or not these directors are too mainstream now to be considered truly 'indie' is up for debate. Noah Baumbach's earlier film 'The Squid And The Whale' was a moving, strangely unsettling film with a fine performance from Jeff Bridges. 'Greenberg' was similarly sad but funny at times, and the kooky 'Frances Ha' starring Greta Gerwig was popular and enjoyable, despite an occasionally frustrating main character. In fact, Stiller in 'Greenberg' was also a difficult character to empathise with, so the theme could continue in his latest, 'Mistress America'. Gerwig returns as both an actor and also as a co-writer, so her new character Brooke has been seen by some as a maturer version of Frances. Brooke is another kooky whirlwind, whose latest adventure is trying to open a restaurant that will also serve as a community centre and a hair salon. She then tries to persuade an old friend to invest and takes 18year-old Tracy (Lola Kirke) with her. Soon to be her stepsister, Tracy aspires to become a writer and thinks that she might have found her inspiration in Brooke. The reviews have been good, mentioning that it's light but with "gratifying depth" according to the Guardian; if you enjoyed his earlier films or like an indie sort of tale generally then this one could well be for you. 'Trainwreck' is another character study, although the director this time is Judd Apatow, the man behind hits such as 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin' and 'Knocked Up'. He was also a producer on the superb TV show 'Freaks And Geeks' however which had an intelligent, emotionally rich and detailed female main character as well as working on 'Bridesmaids' and 'Girls', so he has experience in creating interesting female leads. Amy Schumer is known for highlighting the plight of women in the industry on her TV show and is therefore a perfect lead to play the character Amy. She also wrote the film so it'll be interesting to see how it turns out as an attempt to revitalise the stuttering genre of the rom-com. The fictional (or perhaps semi-autobiographical?) Amy enjoys heavy drinking and a variety of different men, whereas her sister has settled down with a husband. The film explores her new relationship with the always hilarious Bill Hader, who you might know from 'Superbad', 'The Skeleton Twins', ‘Saturday Night Live’ and much more. Schumer is also a real comedic talent and Apatow can always get the best from performers so this should make for a perfect night out for any comedy fans. Both of the films previewed here are from innovative and talented writers and directors. It seems striking that both are written by the stars, and I hope that they prove to be successful. We certainly need as much original drama and comedy as possible in a sea of franchises and superhero movies. Although these can be great, original storylines and cleverly crafted characters are arguably the lifeblood of cinema, so let’s hope that these Baumbach/Gerwig and Apatow/Schumer joints do well.

ANDREW KAY SHUT THE.... Stop moaning, make the most of life, you never know how long you have got
O
h how I tire of moaning. I am tired of people moaning and of me moaning too. What a state we are all in, moan, moan moan, when all around us there is so much to celebrate. This all came to a head when I was looking at Facebook, or Whinebook as I now think of it. It was the weekend of Pride and someone I know was having a right old moan about it. I wanted to scream shut the… but I resisted. I didn’t join in any Pride festivities this year as I was not in the right mood. Many friends were not going and the few that were did not call to ask if I wanted to join them. I stayed at home and cooked and gardened, well I tidied up my pots of plants and added a few new ones, hardly Kew but it makes me smile wen I get home to see some pretty plants and flowers – I am easily pleased. Pride has always been a special event and one that over the years I have been proud to be a part of and enjoyed too. This year I simply did not feel like it, best stay home I thought – and I did! Looking online it seemed like an amazing success and hats off to the people who tirelessly work to make it so. It certainly brings a huge amount of business into the city and for that we should all say

Perhaps we are all being kept going far too long, way past our best before dates a hearty thank you. My Saturday was a quiet one, friends came for lunch on Sunday and together we mourned the sad and seemingly premature death of Cilla Black. I have always been a huge Cilla fan, especially those early recordings made at the Abbey Road Studios. I listen to them often, although I do skip over a few tracks, I can’t listen to “Oh you are a mucky kid” I’m afraid. The outpouring of grief was almost immediate and seemed heartfelt – then the whiners started. How rude I thought. How bloody rude. Okay, you may not have liked her music, her accent, her raucous humour. Okay, you may have been told that she was not always that nice, she may have had her faults. Well haven’t we all. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone I say ( I think someone else might have said that first). Over the next few days I read

with interest the comments from the people who knew her well and they proved to be both generous and honest. Paul O’Grady, a close friend of hers, was quite clearly moved but also frank about a woman who knew how to have a good time. Good for them I thought, living life to the full. Cilla Black in interview had made it clear that she didn’t want to live beyond 75, when as she put it, things start falling off. I can see her point too. Perhaps we are all being kept going far too long, way past our best before dates. It’s funny too how pop idols as they grow older become either sainted or demonised, although quite a few have done a very good job of demonising themselves, a Mr Paul Gadd (AKA Gary Glitter) for example. I’m no believer when it comes to life after death, I gave up on that many years back when the cruel realities of the world we live in sort of crushed my belief in an all loving god (and I use a lower case ‘g’ intentionally there, if there is a god and he or she wants that cap ‘G’ then it’s about time they earned it). No, no life after death which means no heaven. That’s a sad thought. One of the clips I saw online was of a much younger Cilla duetting with Marc Bolan and T Rex. Whoever made the Top of The Pops programme that had featured it was rather cynical about the pairing. I rather liked it. There they were singing Life’s A Gas – and clearly enjoying it. It made me wonder what other fabulous combos could be made up in that heavenly choir – and what noises might emanate from hell too. I’m going to continue with my quest for some positive thinking for the forseeable future. I’m going to play all my Cilla albums and enjoy them. I’ve dug out the T Rex albums too and will give them a whirl, they made me happy as a teenager so why would they not make me happy now. If you need to moan then give it some thought and sort it out rather than whingeing.

GONE WITH THE WIND one with the Wind, Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer Prizewinning novel, is one of the bestselling books of all time, with at least 28 million copies having been published in nearly every language. The story’s immortality was secured by David O. Selznick's 1939 film adaptation, a winner of eleven Academy Awards. It is an epic, almost operatic saga set throughout the civil war. Kittenish Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara, a girl so pampered that even to put her face in the sun is considered too tiring, is in love with the self-consciously chivalrous Ashley Wilkes. She near destroys the lives of those around her for his love, when really she is more in love with the idea of being in love with him. And even that is with the ideal version of him. In steps handsome rogue Rhett Butler, a man who sees through Scarlett’s airs and pretences, as he hides none of his own ‘uncouth’ humanity. Theirs is a relationship borne of hate but really rooted in love. No matter how much they argue and throw things, they will never be able to escape from being each other’s perfect match. MGM took a risk in casting Vivien Leigh as Scarlett; this was one of the most talked about and coveted roles in Hollywood to date and they chose an English nobody with the wrong colour eyes (handily changed in post-production). The risk paid off as the tepid tale of thwarted love amid the ashes of the old South leaps from the page to become one of the greatest love stories of all time. Clark Gable unforgettably incarnates Rhett, but this film would be nothing without Scarlett. Leigh's lively brilliance makes Scarlett believable. It isn’t perfect: it’s disturbingly lenient to the Confederacy and does a sterling line in “happy slaves”. Gone with the Wind was released into cinemas when there were still people living who had memories of plantations and the American slave trade. Yet, grotesquely, the black characters are shown as being clearly better off under slavery and the war does nothing to help them. Let’s also not forget the film’s insistence that a gentleman may feel free to assert his conjugal rights. However, whether you are watching on a cinema screen, television screen or indeed, your laptop, the huge exteriors and skylines ablaze have a dreamlike, expressionist quality that radiates. Gone With The Wind was one of the first films to be made in splendid, expensive Technicolor. Not only is the film fabulous for its modern heroine and refusal to give a neat conclusion, it also doesn’t shy away from amassing as many clichés as it possibly can. After all, you’ll like at least one of them, right? For more classical reviews subscribe to my YouTube channel, youtube.com/user/MissJessicaKH, and watch PostFeature every Wednesday night at 6.30 for more on the latest cinema releases.

THE KIDS ARE BACK Andrew Kay hands over his pages to the critical gaze of the city’s youngsters
love this feature that comes round each year. Not because I get a week off, far from it, but because the kids that we ask to join in do such a great job and have such a good time. I get the feeling that the restaurants that join in have an equally good time too. Year on year we learn that Brighton’s restaurants do appreciate the views of youngsters and do cater for them. Year on year we also see just how sophisticated Brighton and Hove’s kids really are. Okay, some of them will still take the easy route, but so many of them are happy to try spicy foods and really push the boat out. This year I popped along to see our young reviewers as they dined at Donatello. I knew they would be having a good time because for many many years when my nephews were young I would take them along and they always loved it. I also loved the fact Donatellos really understand the needs of families when it comes to dining and I am delighted to say that the other restaurants that joined in this year do so too. Having not done a review myself this week I will sign off now (I am a bit peckish) and leave it to the kids…

PINOCCHIO Charlie (12) Monty (9)
inocchio was our restaurant that we went to and was a lovely place. At first the lady waiting for us was polite and wondered if we wanted to sit downstairs or upstairs. Then she gave us our menu and chose what drink, starter and main we would like. I chose a Coke with ice and lime in. For my starter I shared some bresaola della valtellina, which was beef served with rocket and lemon. The beef was cut finely and was easy to chew on and you could rip it up easily. Rocket and lemon was a great combination and tasted lovely and had a bit of a kick in it which was nice. I then went on to have my main meal and I went for a traditional Italian meal which was Spaghetti Bolognese and it had a bit of parmesan on the top of it as well. My main meal was a delight to eat. I loved the beef in it because it was full of flavour. But then it even got better because for pudding I had bignè al cioccolato which is profiteroles with chocolate sauce, served with strawberries and cream and caramel ice cream. It was melt in the mouth and loved it! Pinocchio is a brilliant restaurant and I would highly rate it to a lot of people! (Charlie) The lady who offered us to sit either upstairs or downstairs, was very kind when we chose to sit upstairs. Then the man who asked for what we wanted was very patient and was kind too. Then the man who gave us our drink was really really funny, and he was patient too when we asked for what drink we wanted. The starter for me was calamari with lemon and yummy dressing (calamari is squid) main course then came which was an amazing large portion that was full of flavour, it was tagliatelle carbonara with mushrooms (Italian style). For dessert I had coppa maxi, pistachios, ice-cream, nougat, chocolate sauce and whipped cream, it tasted SO AMAZING it made me feel ECSTATIC. hen we arrived we were shown to our table. While we were waiting we had a look at the drinks menu. It was really hard to choose because there was such a wide variety. Eventually I chose the bambino mocktail which was apple juice, orange juice, lemonade and grenadine. It was one of the best mocktails I have ever had. I had a look at the menu and decided to have a salad bar starter which was nice, for my main I had rigatoni with bacon, onion and black pepper it was really delicious and the service was really fast. My brother Harry ordered fusilli with tomato sauce which he loved. For dessert I had chocolate truffle gateaux which was scrumptious but very filling and rich. I would definitely go back again, it’s a great family place and overall I would give it 9/10. 1-3 Brighton Place, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1HJ 01273 775477 www.donatello.co.uk

TERRE A TERRE Lois (12) Elina (12)
MOKSHA Aidan (9) and Emily (7)
went to Terre a Terre for the first time with my friend Lois and my mum. My first impression was very good, I normally go for the adults menu but I had the kids menu. I was expecting the restaurant to be very fancy but it was relaxed which I preferred. The waiter was lovely, they kept checking up on us making sure we were ok. To drink, I had the organic pear juice which was nice. For the starter we order the hoisin sauce tofu and curdite which is a selection of organic vegetables with guacamole, the tofu was delicious it also had a sesame seed covering. As for the curdite it was equally pleasant however I didn’t eat the guacamole and I thought that even though it was the children’s meal the presentation could be a bit more like my mum’s adult version. I had battered halloumi and chips and ketchup (on the menu it was called better batter with chips) the chips were cooked to perfection. I think the halloumi would taste better if it was char-grilled. The dessert was by far the best dish because of the brilliant presentation and taste. I had doughnut sticks with dark chocolate source with berries, edible flowers and cocoa powder. (Elina) I’d like to start off by saying I loved the trip to Terre a Terre. It is a lovely place to go and have a meal, or lunch. As you walk in the deep red walls and candle lit tables give a warm, calming feel which I love. The waiter was helpful and the food came quickly, also at the back there is a small peaceful garden with planting and seating. The restaurant is child friendly with a small selection of baby food and upstairs changing room. The delicious food filled me up, I would love to go back again. (Lois) Overall we would like to give a collective and positive thumbs up – thank you! 71 East St, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1HQ 01273 729051 www.terreaterre.co.uk
e were warmly welcomed and directed to sit wherever we wanted the kids chose the 'posh, comfy seats' right at the back. The menu was extensive and varied and we chose a broad selection of items – kids, being kids, didn't want breakfast items at lunchtime despite the lure of Blueberry pancakes on the kid's breakfast menu. The children decided on ham and cheese toasties and the Mozzarella and Chorizo Panini. They loved them and both were steadily demolished. Dad went for the (substantial) Moksha breakfast with hash browns and black pudding plus toast, all for £7.95. I was very tempted by the Meze (all three types - Vegetable, Mediterranean and Charcuterie - £5.95) or the Quiche (two at £5.95) but went for the salad at £6.25, choosing the Smoked Salmon & Avocado with fennel, feta and lemon and dill dressing. Milkshakes were a big hit as were the smoothies. There were words over the last drops of the shared vanilla milkshake and smoothie - this one was a Berry Go Round (the kids loved the names and reading out the ingredients of the smoothies) and the lucky mum here found that both my kids declared my hot chocolate to be better than Moksha's... but having tasted Moksha's offering I disagree. My fresh mint tea hit the spot perfectly. The food and drinks were of good quality and we felt reasonably priced - and with decent portions. The staff were attentive, polite and friendly without being overly so. It was a warm welcoming place for children. The menu was family friendly and great value for money. We would go back, especially for the extensive and generous breakfasts. 4-5 York Place, Brighton and Hove, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 4GU 01273 248890 www.mokshacaffe.com

CHILLI PICKLE Katja (9) & Nessa (3) ’ve enjoyed a Chilli Pickle takeaway but this was my first visit to the actual restaurant. It’s very conveniently across from the library which I love to visit. I noticed the pink cow, decorated with hand prints. My cousin Nessa and I entered the restaurant; it was very colourful and had beautiful lights around it and lots of things from India. I was with my parents and aunty and uncle, they ordered from the pre-theatre a soothing mango lassi, Nessa had one too. They arrived and were in little bottles, we found them so yummy we were quiet for a long time – that was a first! Ram served us, he was very friendly and got us a cheeky second lassi as they were so delicious (Nessa said So So So delicious, she is only three). I had Chicken Curry Kids Thali – they told me it’s mild, which was good as I only like a little spice. It came with chicken curry, nan bread and poppodums. The sauce was so tasty and I enjoyed dipping in the naan. I especially liked the naan as it was very nicely toasted and puffy. It was also a big portion. Nessa had the Malai Chicken & Pineapple Kebab which was super big for a 3 year old, she said it was really tasty and loved the pineapple pieces. She had fun splashing her hands in the rose water that was for washing your hands in. Nessa liked the poppadums because they were nice and crispy she also liked the buttery nan bread. We both finished our mains so were rewarded with Mango Kulfi Lollipops (with popping candy sprinkle, you can ask for 100s & 1000s too). It was gorgeous; especially when we put popping candy on, Nessa found it very exciting! She said her mouth tingled. I would love to come back very soon and would recommend this restaurant to every child in Brighton & Hove even if you don’t like spice because it is so much more and more and more! 17 Jubilee St, Brighton BN1 1GE, 01273 900383, www.thechillipickle.com

really liked the interior, it was modern with an Asian feel. I had fish fingers and chips from the children's menu which was tasty and the chips were perfect - not greasy. For pudding I had chocolate Ice cream which was yummy! The service was quick but you didn't feel rushed, it was very friendly too. It was nice to look into Pelham Square rather than a busy shopping street. I will definitely be going again. (Amelie) When we arrived, we were able to choose where to sit and decided to sit inside. I had a beef burger from the adult menu which I shared with Chloe. I liked the way the beef burger and chips were presented - it was very tasty. I had banoffee pie for pudding which was very nice. The waiter was very friendly and the seats comfy. (Lola) I liked it because it was big and roomy and I liked the Buddha statues. The beef burger was delicious and the chips nice. The strawberry icecream was delicious too. The toilets were very clean!! Bruce was very nice and gave us a picture to colour in and a lollipop when we left. AVENUE Elijah Ratzel (9) & Eva Marie Ratzel (6) oday we went to Avenue in Hove for the first time. We sat outside on the terrace and enjoyed the afternoon sun. We met a man called Mario but I call him super Mario, because the pizzas he made tasted amazing. He showed us how to make a delicious pizza using fresh ingredients and where the special hot oven was. For dessert we had chocolate brownie sundaes with vanilla ice cream and chunks of brownies in which were yummy. I would go back any time for another tasty pizza. Out of 10 I would score Avenue a strong 11 for stupendous pizzas, great atmosphere and nice people! Ben looked after us and the service was great. He told us about the childrens' parties they have over the summer holidays and after school during term time. I might have my 10th Birthday party here and invite 20 of my friends to make our own delicious pizzas. You can have anything you like on your pizza and choose from loads of toppings. The best thing is designing and colouring in your own pizza box which you can take home! Dessert is jelly and ice cream which is not my favourite so I might ask for something different. Whilst we waited for our lunch he gave us lots of colouring books and word searches to keep us busy. A really nice restaurant and Eva Marie wants to go back next week for her Birthday! reston Park, barely 10 minutes' gentle stroll from my house, is hosting a two-day music festival, Together The People, at the start of September. This is easily the worst piece of news I've heard in a long while. Not because I'm worried about noise or disruption, I hasten to add. And not because there'll be all those happy, smiling people drifting past my front door the whole weekend, off to enjoy the music and generally bubbling with youthful optimism, although obviously that'll be bloody irritating as well. No, it's because I'm obviously going to be attending this festival myself, aren't I? Probably both days. And that's going to set a seriously damaging precedent. Living in Brighton for the best part of 30 years, I've become shockingly lazy when it comes to how far I'm prepared to travel to attend gigs. Or come to that, any form of entertainment. Why do you really think I preferred Withdean to the Amex..? Schlep up to London to see a band? You've got to be kidding. It's way too far, way too expensive and way too time consuming an exercise. All that, plus I'd have to share a train carriage with other actual members of the human race. Have you ever tried that? Don't, it's awful. No, Brighton and Hove has been my geographical limit, gig-wise, for a good many years now. But at least, up to this point, that limit has included pretty much any venue in the city. Not from September, I suspect. Not once I've been able to step out of my front door, amble a few hundred yards and find a line-up that includes several acts that I truly love, such as Super Furry Animals, Levellers, Brakes, Public Service Broadcasting and one of my all-time heroes, Billy Bragg. Once I've done that, well, that's me ruined for life, isn't it? From that point onwards, no matter how much I may love a band or a performer, if their next tour doesn't include the park where I walk my dog each morning, then frankly they can forget it. I may be keen on them, but I'm not that keen. Of course, you're wondering where this will all end, aren't you? Will I get the hump with Billy Bragg, for example, if his future venues don't include our kitchen? Or, preferably, our bedroom, so I don't have to bother getting up? That would be pretty bad, I agree. But no, I think I can safely say I'm not that lazy. Not unless Billy and pals are performing way down at the bottom of Preston Park, rather than at the top, in which case I'll obviously be going by cab. Mike Ward is the TV Critic of the Daily Star and the TV Editor of the Daily Express Saturday magazine. Hear him every Monday afternoon with Guy Lloyd on Brighton’s Juice 107.2

CHALKING UP A VICTORY t’s their gallery’s 10th anniversary this year, and now the Chalkies have even more reason to celebrate. Lewes’s delightful artist-run Chalk Gallery has just been named ‘Small Business of the Year’ in the town’s District Business Awards. The great thing about visiting this small but perfectly curated artspace is that you are guaranteed a friendly welcome from one of the 21 creatives who take turns to man the front desk. There’s a brand new exhibition every six weeks, and a different ‘featured artist’ every three weeks, so there’s always something new to see. If you pop in, be sure to seek out the work of David Williams. Inspired by perspective and atmospheric light, his subjects range from views of Sussex and the South Downs Way to exotic locations and dramatic landscapes. He travels widely, taking many photographs and sketches for reference, then recaptures the moments in acrylics, oils, watercolours and mixed Secluded Bay David Williams media. Also painting in response to the landscape, and one of Chalk Gallery’s resident artists, is Janice Thurston. Her current work focuses on the countryside around Ditchling Beacon and reveals her interest in the sublime vastness of big spaces and the transformations that relentlessly take place as the seasons and colours alter. Featured here, September Sunlight shows Janice’s fascination with the way the shifting light affects the shape and contours of the land to produce semi-abstract patterns. But these are just two of the supremely talented Chalkie consortium. The gallery also features original prints, drawings, ceramics, sculpture and jewellery. So if you are in the area, don’t miss out. www.artymagazines.com Twitter @brightonsarty

SUREFIRE SHAWSHANK HIT From short story to classic movie and now stage, The Shawshank Redemption comes to the Theatre Royal Brighton classic short story became a classic movie – but in September The Shawshank Redemption is the Theatre Royal Brighton’s autumn season opener with a new stage production inspired by that classic movie and short story by best selliing author Stephen King. The play examines desperation, injustice, friendship and hope behind the claustrophobic bars of a maximum security facility. Andy Dufresne, a banker who, having received a double life sentence for the brutal murder of his wife and her lover, is incarcerated in the notorious Shawshank penitentiary. Unflinching in his protests of innocence, Andy strikes up an unlikely friendship with the prison fixer Red, and things take a slight turn for the better. Well known and loved for his role as practice manager Howard Bellamy in BBC One’s Doctors, Ian’s other major TV roles include Patrick Spiller in BBC One’s Casualty, and parts in Emmerdale, Down To Earth, Blue Murder and the final series of Where The Heart Is. GIVE A LITTLE LOVE...
THE DAMNED
The art of giving doesn’t have to be entirely altruistic; taking a look at charity shows ake charity. Go on, take it and run with it. We have such a wide variety of charity nights foisting the best of comedy’s talent onto us in Brighton throughout the year, as well as some incredibly worthy local charities from MS Sussex to the Sussex Beacon and Amaze. We really are the People’s Republic Of Brighton (check out the Facebook group that popped up in the wake of the general election results of that name too). There are the big annual fundraisers. The Brighton Comedy Festival kicks off on 9 October with it’s Opening Night Gala, in aid of the Sussex Beacon, which in recent years has been hosted by the charity’s patron Alan Carr. Fingers crossed for this year. The bill for 2015 has yet to be announced but past talents to grace the Concert Hall’s stage for this prestigious event include Seann Walsh, Jack Dee, Angela Barnes, Kevin Bridges and Michael McIntyre. With tickets at just £26.50 it’s giving to a good cause and bagging yourself a fantastic night out too. Of course, not all charity evenings occur on such a large scale. This coming Sunday sees a brand new fundraiser pop up over at The Pond pub for Mouth Cancer Awareness. Called Smiley Sunday – you see what they did there – there are seven comics on the bill headlined by the delectable and ever-sharp musical comic David Jordan, who was nominated for Leicester Mercury Comedian Of The Year earlier this year. September starts with the same generous attitude, with Komedia playing host to first the North Laine Charity Comedy Night on Wednesday 2 September, and then the return of the monthly fundraiser Charity Chuckle on the 8th – which rotates which charity benefits from each show, giving them all the benefit of a good laugh. And – stop the presses – on Wednesday 9 September the rare treat of award-winning TV comedy producer (Baby Cow) Henry Normal can be seen as performer when he gets to the stage with A Celebration Of Poetry, Humour & Family Photos. Describing his poetry as “All the humour and frivolity of Leonard Cohen and all the spiritual depth of Daffy Duck”, this intimate gem of a show is in aid of local charity Amaze, of which Normal is a patron, and is again at Komedia. What can you say about The Damned, one of the original punk bands? lenty it seems… The first band to release a 'punk' single, New Rose was dropped on the market on 22 October, 1976, all 1 minute and 59 seconds of it, led off by the iconic opening of lead singer Dave Vanian saying, 'Is she really going out with him'? a homage of the ShangriLas song Leader of the Pack. Dave Vanian (Dave Letts), Brian James, Captain Sensible (Raymond Burns), and Rat Scabies (Chris Millar) formed The Damned out of the ashes of Masters of the Backside (who had featured one Chrissie Hynde, later of Pretenders fame, on lead vocals). James had been a member of the proto-punk band London SS who had never played live - and he and Scabies, who had declined an invitation to join London SS, looked to form their own band, inviting both Sid Vicious and Vanian to audition. Only Vanian turned up, and with Sensible on bass, The Damned were born, playing their first show in July 1976, supporting the Sex Pistols at the 100 Club in London. Such was the initial scaremongering (perhaps partially justified) around the punk scene, that when The Damned were invited to be part of the Sex Pistols infamous Anarchy Tour in late '76, less than half of the tour dates were fulfilled, with organisers and local
authorities getting the fear and/or getting their arms twisted by the 'authorities'.

It didn't seem to matter as far as The Damned were concerned. They released the first full-length punk album, which included the classic punk track Neat, Neat, Neat, opened for T-Rex on their final UK tour before the death of Marc Bolan, and became the first British punk band to tour the US. Although their second album Music For Pleasure was roundly criticised, and the band briefly fell apart, they resumed in the spring of '79, released the much better Machine Gun Etiquette and started to enjoy some hits including Love Song and Smash It Up. And In 1986 they had their own top ten hit, Eloise. Vanian and Sensible are with the present line-up of The Damned, and along with Monty Oxymoron on keys, Pinch on drums, and Stu West on bass, they can still rock like punk rockers. The dizzyingly talented duo presented a colourful menagerie of residents from Sudley-on-Sea, and the speed and skill involved in switching characters/voices/mannerisms so quickly and completely was impressive, and often hilarious. The motto of the town is ‘Don’t go on the beach’ and the duo witness a witch drowning, exemplifying the absurdly comic but endearing doomed townsfolk. I won’t give away too much of the plot since they return to the Studio Theatre in October and you should go, but it is a well written tale with real dramatic beats, as well as a hectic pace and a strong hit-rate for gags. The intelligent, creative and imaginative farce was an all-round success that should go down a storm in Edinburgh. Joe Fuller

Singer songwriter Mark Kozelek’s performance style was slow and relaxed, playing songs from a breadth of his output including collaborative work with Jimmy Lavalle and Desertshore. The generous 2 and a half hour long set ensured that the audience had plenty of material from the superb, confessional recent albums; a raucous, carefully textured version of ‘The Possum’ was the evening’s highlight. The band were tight and smooth, and good spirits in trying songs they had never played before in the encore when taking requests. Kozelek jokingly moaned at the start that it was too light, and the atmosphere did indeed improve as the the sun went down. Spooky Men’s Chorale Spooky Men’s Chorale is an Australian male voice choir with a difference. Like a fleet of human Model T Fords, the black-clad, sixteen-piece group took to the stage en-hirsute-masse wearing a variety of silly hats and led the audience on a musical journey that ping-ponged from the surreal and the silly to the sublime. With tongues firmly in cheeks, the group explored modern masculinity through song and slapstick humour. The repertoire ranged from humorous odes to tools and eyebrows to Tom Waits, Prince, Georgian polyphonic harmonies, an exquisite musical rendition of a Tennyson poem and a dervishthemed homage to the Bee Gees. The timing, both comic and harmonic, was spot on and the show an infectiously daft familyfriendly romp. The Old Market, 2 August 2015 Jenni Davidson ★★★★★

FILM: Red Channel 4, 9pm Where do spies go when it comes time to retire? Well, apart from the low life expectation, it would seem they either rise up the ranks á la ‘M’ or retreat to a paranoid desert island of boobie traps. Bruce Willis ducks out entirely, setting up a new life with a new name, until he’s pulled in again with big explosions galore.

SUNDAY 16 Dragons’ Den BBC2, 8pm It’s not easy pitching to the scary Dragons with their big wads of dosh and all-powerful stares. You’ve got to make it fun – like the husband and wife team and their electic Tuk Tuk’s touring the Den, or tasty – like the couple with their Korean inspired sauces. So feel for the poor lad from Manchester who crumbles.
Country Strife: Abz On The Farm BBC2, 9.45pm We all know about the ex-popstar who became a cheese farmer, but it’s not really the path most frequently trodden. Until now... This three-part series follows exboyband rapper Abz Love and his girlfriend Vicky Fallon as they swap city life for a smallholding in Wales. No dosh and few ideas.
Zoo Sky1, 9pm So, we’re at the top of the food chain – right? As the human race we’ve spent a disproportionate amount of our existence hunting other things, eating them, or sticking them above a fireplace and calling it ‘home furnishings’. Well the animals are fighting back. US drama that’ll show you who’s the real king of the jungle.
