obody’s perfect. It’s the final line of ‘Some Like It Hot’ (that’s not a spoiler so don’t worry), and it seems to be something a lot of us have forgotten in the twenty first century. What with the chance to ‘tidy up’ every pic before it hits Facebook or Instagram, learn your best angles so that you’re never snapped from below, and untag yourself from any that slip through the net, do we even know what we actually look like anymore? I have learned to love my imperfections. I say it easily but I didn’t arrive here with the same smooth simplicity. I was always too tall as a teenager – still too tall if I think about it. As a result my head is too big for most hats, my feet too big for girlie shoes, and as I get older I get more concerned with unwanted hair and appearing to have grabbed my wardrobe randomly from a boutique charity shop but actually making sure everything actually fits properly. I broke two of my fingers a couple of years ago and for the first time my hands weren’t symmetrical. The ring finger on my right hand is still slightly wonky, but I live with it and embrace it as a quirk. A story. A little bit of my history physically remembered. And this is because of my mother. I remember when my mother started saying that she thought she looked old. She didn’t look old. She was a mature student going to art college in her thirties surrounded by teenagers. Of course she’d think she looked old. And I remember saying that the little wrinkles around her eyes, just starting to show whenever she smiled, were fab. “They’re happiness scars!”, I’d declared. And looking forward to the point when I would have been so happy in my life that I too had happiness scars shouting the news across my face. So I’m not perfect. But neither is perfection. It doesn’t tell your life, lead to stories of derring-do, or allow you feel comfortable in your own skin. And I think I’m happier this way.

LATEST PEOPLE Marvellous talent at the Martlets he Martlets Shopping Centre in Burgess Hill hosted a superbly entertaining Search for a Star Talent Competition in July. Shoppers gathered at the centre to watch local residents battle it out for their chance to win the top prize of £350. From tap dancing to solo singers, the event featured a wide variety of entertainment for the local community to enjoy. Dawn McCurry, who performed a rendition of ‘When I Was Your Man’ by Bruno Mars, was stunned to find herself the winner of the competition and the £350 prize. The mother of two was nominated by her husband to perform, having lacked the confidence to enter. Her Bruno Mars cover impressed the judges and crowd alike, scoring her the top place and the 2015 title. Second place and £100 went to tap dancing trio, Lillie Robinson, Chloe Rose Hodges and Samantha Foster. The group treated onlookers to a routine performed to ‘Cups’ from the popular film, Pitch Perfect. Finally, third place was awarded to Jake Tweddle and Tom

Great White Adventure Fuels Daniella’s Passion for Sea Life righton Sea Life Centre boasts some big sharks but to new aquarist Daniella Hodgson even a sinisterlooking eight-foot long sandbar shark is just a baby! Not surprising when you consider 23-year-old Daniella spent every day for two months in the company of great white sharks last autumn. The former Hastings girl was an intern with South Africa’s ‘Ocean Research’ programme, and made daily trips out into Mossel Bay to lure great whites close enough to have their dorsal fins photographed. “We often saw four or five, and once had as many as 13 in a single trip,” she said. “It was brilliant being so close to these amazing predators, and the work we did will help shed light on great white numbers and movements; information vital to conservation efforts.” It was evident from Daniella’s A-level choices at Bexhill College when she was just 16 where her interests lay. With good passes in biology, environmental studies and geography under her belt she headed to Plymouth University, where she gained a degree in marine biology and coastal ecology. Her dissertation focused on the

Blunt, whose duet of ‘Love the Way You Walk Away’ by Blitzen Trapper wowed the crowd. The panel of judges including Bright FM’s Tim Guest, The Deputy Town Mayor of Burgess Hill, Jacqui Landriani, Simon Cowell lookalike Andy Penfold and The Martlets’ very own Operations Manager, Debbie Rathbone decided the winner of the 2015 talent tournament. Dawn McCurry, winner of the 2015 Search for a Star competition, commented: “I am thrilled to have won The Martlets’ competition. I had become so unsure of my singing ability that it had been years since I’d gone near a stage! Winning the competition has really brought my confidence back, and I can’t wait to get started on performing regularly in the Burgess Hill community. Thank you to the judges for awarding me the top prize and to my husband, Bob, for nominating me to enter – it feels fantastic to have won.” Ian Goodridge, Centre Manager of The Martlets Shopping Centre, commented: “We were delighted to host the Search for a Star competition

pollution of the marine world by micro-plastics, and in particular how coastal creatures like sandhoppers may be ingesting and breaking down plastics to add to the problem. In her own time, Daniella is now designing a study programme for Ocean Research to help them assess the impact of micro-plastics on three species of seabeddwelling sharks found off the South African coastline. Daniella’s South African adventure cemented her ambitions to carve out a career working with marine life, and she jumped at the chance to join the displays team at Brighton Sea Life Centre. Now a full time ‘aquarist’ she spends her days tending to the needs of thousands of creatures ranging from shrimps and starfish to sharks and sea turtles. Though thrilled to be able to work with marine life, she is just as excited by the behind-the-scenes life support systems and getting to know how everything works. “I spent part of a day recently learning how to replace the bearings in a water pump, and found it completely fascinating,” she said. Daniella also has ample opportunity in her new role to aid conservation work. It was she who organised a special Walk For

Whales in Brighton recently to raise vital funds for Whale & Dolphin Conservation. A few months ago Daniella might well have named the great white shark her favourite sea creature, but her Sea Life experience has shifted her allegiance to nautilus – star of a new Jurassic Seas exhibition - and cuttlefish. “Both are amazing creatures,”

said Daniella, who now lives in Hove. “Everything about them from the cuttlefish’s patternshifting ability to the nautilus’s incredible eyes and the way it uses its own bodily gases to move up or down the water column are just astonishing.” Such is Daniella’s enthusiasm for the marine world her new job is a real labour of love. www.visitsealife.com/brighton

This week: News Presenter Tatiana Sanchez

" 'Good morning, Patcham Village Dental Centre, how may I help?' 'Yes, hi, I would like to book an appointment for this Thursday please, just a general check up.....' This exchange seems simple, right? Well, in England it is just a phone call away. This is far from reality for children in Morocco. For them it's an entirely different story. It is a hundred, sometimes even a thousand, mile journey, from an isolated fishing village or shanty town, for each child who seeks treatment from 'Dental Mavericks' - western dentists whose own journey to treat these kids for no charge has not always been smooth sailing. But then, what is the end result without the journey, the fight, the ability to look back knowing the challenges that were overcome? On first arrival in Morocco, border agents refused to sanction the entry of previously cleared dental equipment. The team of dentists, from all over the UK, including No Pain Nigel and No Pain Shane of the Patcham Village Dental Centre in Brighton, found their trip in jeopardy. But ever optimistic, after days of negotiations they were reunited with their equipment, without which they wouldn't have been able to carry out their work for the children in desperate need of treatment. This year, I will have the enormous privilege of travelling to Chefchaouen in Morocco with the Dental Mavericks, helping in any way I can with the extraordinary life-changing work that they perform. I also intend to produce a documentary of the charity-sponsored trip, capturing important moments of the journey and the challenges we will face, which I look forward to bringing to you on my return. Your donations count for more than you could imagine."

The restlessly fun indie band come to Patterns next week

saw Deerhoof in summer 2013 when they were touring 'Breakup Song' and am really excited about their upcoming show in support of 'La Isla Bonita'. The indie rockers from San Francisco are fantastic on record but often a little obtuse, eschewing obviously accessible pop songs in favour of avant-garde turns of rhythm, pace and style. Live however they have more breakthrough appeal so they are certainly worth a punt to break up your week; Satomi Matsuzaki is a charismatic singer and guitarist which can be so important in gigs. The complex beats from the band's co-founder Greg Saunier and Ed Rodriguez's jagged, almost post-punk like guitars create a great upbeat atmosphere that the crowd can go along with. 'La Isla Bonita' is a sharper, looser animal than some of their records, and their shifting dynamics between albums is a large part of their enduring appeal. The album's provenance stems from the band trying to write a track similar to the fan-favourite live cover of Ramones' 'Pinhead'. Greg quickly dashed off a song on a scrap of paper, showed it to the band, and they recorded the breakneck stomper "Exit Only" in one take. "And we suddenly realised," Greg says, "this is the whole thing, this is what the whole record is about!" It's not all as punchy or challenging as that makes it sound though, check out 'Mirror Monster' for example and it's a shimmering, beautiful song with slinking guitars and a soft melody. It's worth trying out the video on Youtube in fact, a strange thing about cars being destroyed that is lent pathos by the backing song and lends diegetic sounds to the original track too. Presumably it's an interpretation of what a 'Mirror Monster' could really be, but whatever it is, it's good. Support is from the Leeds band COWTOWN who eloquently describe themselves as "variant mutant pop". The punky band are upbeat and striking so should be a perfect warmup for the main act. Deerhoof are one of the strongest touring indie bands at the moment, putting on a frenetic show and an all-round fun evening. At the time of writing there are still some tickets left so it'd be best to act fast before they sell out. et in a valley by the River Avon, in rolling Somerset countryside, this must be the finest Georgian city in the land, the Romans built the baths around the hot springs, though oral tradition suggests that the springs were known about before the Romans arrived. See those ancient Roman baths, marvel at the splendid Abbey and wander through grand Georgian streets, and the elegant squares and crescents for which Bath is famous. The town is brimming with things to see, and there are interesting and unique shops to tempt you, too. Bath is famous for its shopping with plenty of independents as well as high end retail. ANDREW KAY WHAT A PERFORMANCE Andrew Kay is upstaged by an angry old man

have no idea when it happened but it did. I was never any good at standing up in front of people and speaking as a kid. I did the usual school plays, nativities and the like, my wise man brought frankincense but little applause despite my rather splendid gold crown that dad bejewelled with fruit-gums! As a teenager I played bass guitar, the pop choice of the reticent through the ages, and I was happy to stay in the background, often choosing to play seated, hardly a rock stance. I gained a little more confidence at art school and my time in Paris studying clowning certainly helped. I guess that the silent nature of that experience helped, I still have trouble learning lines so mime should be my live art form of choice. In my late 40s I received a call from my friend Roger Marlowe. Roger was the founder of the Brighton and Hove Food & Drink Festival and he was enquiring to see if I might like to join in by hosting the Live Food Stage. I said yes. That was about ten years ago and since that first year I have grown to love the whole process. Once shy, yes I know it seems

It was all I could do to compose myself and cook the testicles unlikely, I can now take to the stage and have fun, playing with both chefs and the audience and hopefully making the shows an informative and entertaining experience. In a recent document a colleague described my presentation style as quirky. I amended it to include the terms expert and experienced, well it pays to advertise! Most recently I have been presenting in London's Fitzrovia and then in Kingston upon Thames. It was my third year at the Kingston Food Festival and I really enjoy performing there. The show gets great audiences and great responses and the day is filled with talented chefs and delicious food, which the audience gets to taste. What could be more fun? There are regulars there too, people who come along year on year and stay all day long. Whether they are real food lovers

or simply hungry doesn't matter to me, as long as they are enjoying themselves I am happy that they are there. This year all was going swimmingly well, a packed marquee, great numbers and a real buzz of excitement as the food was prepared and shared. Then towards the end of the second day it all went a bit crazy. Steve, the executive chef for the Wagamama chain was doing sterling work on stage when an elderly gentleman stormed in and started to shout at me. Apparently we had no right to be there in the market square and he demanded that I stopped immediately and take down the marquee. Well with a full kitchen and an audience in excess of 100 that was not really possible. He continued by explaining that he was unable to sit down on his favourite bench. I offered him a seat in the marquee and the promise of some delicious food but he was having none of it. "You have no right to be here" he cried. So I took down the licenses that we needed to be there and showed them to him. At this point he started to shout again so I asked the audience to vote on whether we should stop and take down the marquee. They were as one, supportive and of course hungry I guess. His shouting got worse and he started to swear. At this point I’d had enough. I was not having him use bad language in front of the children present and I took him by the arm and escorted the ranting man out, drawing the vinyl curtain behind him in as forceful a way as is possible. He finally gave up and we continued. I was exhausted by the whole experience and it was all I could do to compose myself and cook the testicles that were to be eaten in the following extreme food event! If you would like to see me on the Live Food Stage at the next Brighton and Hove Food and Drink event then join me on Hove lawns this coming August Bank Holiday weekend on the Saturday and again on Monday.

PASSION IN PRACTICE DV8 are proud to announce two new exciting level 3 courses to add to their already impressive collection. ver the last 12 years Dv8 Sussex has been offering exciting and engaging courses for young people in the creative industries. In this time their successes have allowed them to grow each year and deliver courses from Level 1 to Level 3 in their bespoke training facilities at the hearts of Brighton and Bexhill. Central to what they do is the belief that creative people learn by having opportunities to put their passion into practice. Because of this they keep their class sizes small (usually no more than 12 people) allowing tutors the space to cater to each student’s individual needs and creating the perfect social environment to encourage confidence and belief in young people. Their tutors are a huge part of what makes them special and you can only deliver a course at Dv8 Sussex if you have extensive experience of working in the industry you wish to teach. They also have plenty of industry guests and projects delivered by realworld clients to inspire the students. 2014/15 guests included; David Quantick; Gresham Blake; Tru Thoughts label bosses; DJ Skitz; spoken word artist Hollie McNish; photographer Neil Grundy; producer Rebecca Dawson; and Rough Trade founder Geoff Travis. KILLER COCKTAILS A fine dinner & CUISINE at Plateau first met the guys at Plateau many years back at Blanch House. What an amazing impact Amanda Blanch and Chris Edwardes had on Brighton’s restaurant and bar scene. So many of their team went on to work across the city and then across the UK and the rest of the world. The Plateau boys are very French, delightfully so and when they opened Mange Tout in Trafalgar Street it was a breath of fresh air. A relaxed cafe, or brasserie perhaps that served great breakfasts, delicious lunches and superb suppers. They still do but after a while they also opened Plateau in Bartholomews. The pretty building with lovely windows was an ideal central location for them and pretty soon they had found their niche. As regular readers will know, I am a fan of a good cocktail and Plateau make some of the best the city can offer. It’s a pleasant place to go and sit at the bar with a stiff drink, carefully crafted, or a glass of excellent organic wine, one of their specialities and maybe a platter of cheese or charcuterie. I admit that on occasions I say goodbye to my companions for the evening and slip in there for one for the ditch. A few weeks ago I had attended a launch of a new Italian eatery, more of which later. There I had bumped into my chef friend, the very talented Mr T. We had both enjoyed a few glasses of good wine and delicious canapés – but we both wanted something more substantial to follow. With no plan in mind we drifted towards the old Town Hall and

Having already eaten quite a few teasers at the party we decided to share a starter and then have a main course each. We did however start with a cocktail and mine was amazing, negroni like but white, it was both punchy and light. Mr T chose something longer and fruity and was equally impressed. To start we shared a dish of perfectly prepared octopus with a meaty croquette and a salad of microherbs. It was excellent, every part well cooked, the seasoning well balanced and delightful blend of sweet and savoury flavours and exciting textures. Mr T wanted a steak, he often has cravings for a steak, and after a session in his own excellent spice laden kitches I think he should be able to eat exactly what

happened to be in a fishy frame of mind. It was perfectly cooked and delicately seasoned. It also came with a selection of some of my favourite things. First artichoke hearts, simply prepared and all the better for that. Then courgettes, again cooked with a precision that allowed the sweet flesh to sing out. Finally gnocchi, but no ordinary gnocchi these. Light and fluffy, these sweet litle potato dumplings were made with crab. Yes crab and I guess both white and drak crabmeat. The flavour was quite simply perfection, the sweetness matched by that distinctive muskiness of the soft dark meat. I ate it slowly not wanting the dish to ever end. I think that is recommendation enough. Plateau, 1 Bartholowmews, Brighton, BN1 1HG 01273 733085 plateaubrighton.co.uk

TRAVELLING THROUGH TIME

1

960’s The Time Machine is not to be recommended on the basis of its Academy Award winning special effects, which have aged terribly for a film about time

travel! Do try to look past the antiquated effects and make up to see the story beyond: George, an eccentric London inventor, creates a device that can travel through time - it occupies the same space, yet moves through eras. George doesn't care much for his own time, an epoch when science is called on only to invent new weapons, ones that can more efficiently "depopulate" the Earth. One evening, George takes to his machine and travels forwards in time. After accidentally stopping in the first world war (a conflict predicted by H G Wells when he wrote the book in 1895!) and experiencing the start of nuclear war between the hemispheres, George finally stops his machine in the far-flung world of 802,701 AD. Wilderness has reasserted itself over the ages, save for some damaged but oddly-advanced structures. George meets the denizens of this era, the androgynous Eloi, who have no government, no economy, and no laws but live peacefully. Nobody in the society works, and worse, they don't even know how to grow their own food. The Eloi can't write or read and have grown terribly incurious. George, knowing that asking questions is the only way man learns and develops, is deeply disappointed by the path humanity has taken. The Eloi can tell him nothing but escort him to a library of information discs. (CDs! H G Wells predicted CDs in 1895!) To George’s despair, he learns that mankind is divided by the ultimate class warfare. The inhuman, cannibalistic Morlocks live underground in caverns and feed off the simple, cattle-like Eloi. The Morlocks boast advanced technology (including running water and heat) but are brutal, domineering and exploitative. The Eloi, far from being "free" as George first thought, are servants. Wells was clearly well versed in Darwinism and the film runs with the book’s social commentary involving labour and capital evolving into separate races. The divisions of war finally become such that there is actually a physiological schism in the race: Morlocks and Eloi no longer even share the same biology. This film suggests such division is mankind's destiny, that international wars will lead only to ruin, and a collapse of the species intellectually and physically. George holds a book that crumbles to dust and his horror at the loss of intellectualism and curiosity is clear, yet he doesn't give up. He doesn't cower. Instead, he fights for the human race. Ultimately, he commits himself to the world of 802,701 and sets about the hard work of building a new culture, a new civilization. The message is clear: if we fight for curiosity over bland materialism and consumerism we can save the human race.

This film suggests such division is mankind's destiny, that international wars will lead only to ruin, intellectually and physically

ot a spare fiver? Then I’d stake it on George Clooney to become US President. Or Ed Miliband to win I’m A Celebrity. Because according to bookmakers William Hill, the odds on any of those things happening are 100/1 – the exact same odds they were offering on Jeremy Clarkson and pals signing for Amazon. Which, of course, is exactly what's happened. So what should we make of this curious move by the old Top Gear crew? Well, if you're a fan of theirs and you already subscribe to Amazon Prime – basically an annual payment that lets you get the best of what Amazon has to offer – then obviously it's great, you'll be able to enjoy this new show, whatever it's going to be called, when it starts next year. But if you're a Top Gear fan who doesn't currently buy into the Prime thing, will the signing of Clarkson and co. persuade you to cough up? Or will you just think, sod that, I'll make do with Chris Evans? What we're really going to witness here is a popularity test on an unprecedented scale. I can't recall any major terrestrial TV personality (OK, technically this is three personalities, but we all know who it’s really about) putting their pulling power on the line to the extent that Clarkson's now doing. Sure, we have ratings. But this is bigger. This isn't just a star hoping you'll jab the right button on your remote. This is a star hoping you love them so much that you'll (a) change your viewing habits, and (b) fork out good money to follow them to their new TV home. Make no mistake, that's what Amazon wants from this deal. They'll have invested a fortune in Clarkson, Hammond and May in the hope of luring oodles of new subscribers. I'm not blaming them, it's how their business works. But for Clarkson it could backfire horrendously, because viewer loyalty is a desperately fickle thing. Just think how often a TV channel has forked out a fortune to persuade a big star to switch sides, only to discover that this star's allegedly dedicated fanbase – kind of vital if the deal is to make financial sense – couldn't be bothered to do likewise. Admittedly, Clarkson's situation is a bit different. But the fact remains he'll be expected to deliver viewers to Amazon in their droves. That's a heap of pressure. Money won't concern him. He'll have secured a very lucrative deal. But if fans don't follow him to Amazon in vast numbers, how will his ego cope? TV stars should really think twice before asking their viewers: “How much do you really love me, guys?” They may just find they don’t like the answer. Mike Ward is the TV Critic of the Daily Star and the TV Editor of the Daily Express Saturday magazine. Hear him every Monday afternoon with Guy Lloyd on Brighton’s Juice 107.2

t’s Artwave later this month. And what better way to get you excited about Lewes’s annual visual arts festival than to write about one of our favourite painters, who will be opening her studio once again this year. We first met Jessica Zoob in 2010. And the close encounter with her vast canvases – often the result of years’ of work – is something we’ll never forget. Jessica’s earliest passion was the theatre, ForJoy and her first career theatre design. “I think that’s why I’m constantly craving to do huge, huge things,” she says. Perhaps it also explains the internal dimensions to her art: the hidden depths that are only to be expected when you realise how relentlessly she works: layering and scraping back oils on canvas – again and again… and again. “They have maybe 20 or 30 layers,” says Jessica. “And you can’t have every layer perfect because then you’d never want to lose it. They’re there so you can discover them. I work on about 20 pieces at a time because each layer has to be flat to dry. By the time I’ve got to the 20th I can go back to the first and it’s ready for the next layer. But it’s so scary if you get it wrong. You spend years getting to the final stage and then the last layer might just mess it up.” Jessica’s compulsion is to create paintings that “don’t look painted”. Instead, her works appear almost organic – like they have been formed out of rock or the marks on a pebble. It’s an incredibly slow process, as the artist endeavours to achieve something that just doesn’t look forced or overworked. And it’s impossible to appreciate the results without viewing first-hand their textures and tones. Jessica says she wants to give people “something that doesn’t give away everything at first”. If you spend time looking at the layers, you’ll see different things. It’s a soothing, calming experience that you really shouldn’t miss. Artwave runs from 22 August to 6 September weekends. SOMETHING ROTTEN Dukebox to hear the thoughts of King Claudius

n early heads-up now for one of the city’s most interesting and exciting writers and performers Rober Cohen. While the critical slings and arrows fly back and forth in the debate over Benedict Cumberbatch’s London Hamlet, the City of Brighton & Hove is to hear the thoughts of another player from Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy: Claudius of Denmark. Something Rotten, written and performed by Brighton’s own Cohen, looks at the events of the world’s most famous play from the viewpoint of Hamlet’s uncle-turnedstepfather – King Claudius, the fratricidal regicide (he kills his brother, the king) who marries his victim’s widow and whose death the prince so long plots without enacting. “Claudius is an endlessly intriguing character,” says Cohen; “We know he murdered Hamlet’s father and married his mother, but Shakespeare doesn’t give us too much else. For instance, how long has Claudius had designs on his brother’s crown? How long have he

and Gertrude been at it? How did he get on with his nephew, prior to the recent upheavals? And, just by the by, how did Yorick become the most famous corpse in literary history?” Directed by Jenny Rowe, Something Rotten was premiered at the Barnstaple Fringe TheatreFest, where audience members are encouraged to write down their thoughts about what they’ve seen. “A very committed performance from an outstanding performer,” wrote one audience reviewer: “A great show for those familiar or, like me, unfamiliar with Hamlet.” I would add that from previous performances Robert is indeed a captivating performer. Robert Cohen has specialised in characters “beyond the pale”, from Don John in Much Ado About Nothing to the real-life McCarthyite supergrass in The Trials of Harvey Matusow (FringeReview Outstanding Theatre Award) to the Russian gangster Stepan in the BBC sitcom Ideal to the tormented traffic warden Quint in High Vis – the latter winning acclaim from such diverse corners as Drystone Radio (“Brilliant”), the Daily Mail’s Quentin Letts (“Terrific stuff”), and Remotegoat. OCTOBERFEST

AT THE EDGE OF THE SEA

Treats are in store from the Brighton Comedy Fringe this year uch is being made of the Brighton Comedy Festival coming to town in October, bringing with it such big names as Nina Conti, Patrick Keilty and Beardyman. The Brighton Comedy Festival has done us proud this year. Thank you very much. But it pays not to forget the homegrown Brighton Comedy Fringe, organised by Otherplace Productions who programme The Basement all the year round, and the delights that they too have in store for us. Starting a week later than big brother BC Festival, the BC Fringe kicks off with the marvellous Tom Parry (one third of award-winning sketch group Pappy’s) with his debut solo show ‘Yellow T-shirt’ on 16th October. Known as the most anarchic member of his sketch group, seeing Tom untethered will be a masterclass in mayhem and misrule. Which, when combined with his years of performing and gathering acclaim already, proves most enticing. Red Brick Comedy is making a welcome return as Otherplace’s Saturday night comedy hub, hosted by Sean McLoughlan. Headliners this time include Luisa Omielan – who has been selling out all over the world, including at Komedia and last year’s Brighton Comedy Festival, with her shows ‘What Would Beyoncé Do?’ and ‘Am I Right Ladies?’ – and Mitch Benn – a popular member of the core team on BBC Radio 4’s ‘The Now Show’. Support acts are also always top notch with a hint of risk, making this a raucous and marvellous evening. Otherplace were also the masterminds behind the Brighton Fringe’s Warren site, and as such they’ve booked some of their most successful shows from May to come back. Debut comic play Threesome plays several dates, as does Sh*t-faced Showtime. Plus hotly tipped solo shows from two members of the sell-out improvisation group Racing Minds, in the form of ‘Foolball’ from Tom Skelton and ‘Möglich’ from Douglas Walker. Plus heaps from the likes of Beasts, Tom Neenan, Fin Taylor, Mixed Doubles, James Wilson-Taylor (the man behind ‘The Whosical’), and many more. So indulge in a bit of Fringe frolicking. You know you want to. www.brightoncomedyfestival.com, www.otherplacebrighton.co.uk

The Wedding Present’s two-day summer festival creates a splash n indoor mini-festival curated by David Gedge of indie icons the Wedding Present, this two-day event always takes place on the August Bank Holiday weekend, and always features both The Wedding Present and their alter-ego Cinerama. Devised while siting in a roadside cafe whilst on tour, the inaugural At The Edge of the Sea festival took place in 2009, a one-day event that eventually morphed into a two-day event in 2013. As well as featuring many band members, past and present, Gedge invites acts from here in Brighton, as well as from around the globe. Over the years acts such as The Victorian English Gentlemens Club, The Pipettes, Badly Drawn Boy, Martin Rossiter, The Twilight Sad and The Membranes have graced the event, along with a plethora of lesser known artists. As is the custom nowadays, The Wedding Present dig out one of their past albums, and play it in its entirety. This year, it's the turn of Saturnalia, their fifth album, released in 1996, and the last one before the band decided to 'retire' and become Cinerama, essentially the same band but with a different sound and style. Although Cinerama became The Wedding present again in the early noughties, Cinerama

continues as a side project, albeit usually a very parttime one, often just performing their only gig of year at The Edge of the Sea, the band switching instruments around. However Cinerama recently released a re-vamped version of the Wedding Present's Valentina album, so expect to hear that this year. This year's event also features a recently reformed My Life Story (led by Brighton based Jake Shillingford, and who enjoyed a number of minor hits in the midlate 90s); Birmingham's The Nightingales, who formed in 1979 out of the ashes of punk legends The Prefects; Tom and Alex White's new band The Fiction Aisle; the all-male tribute to The Donnas in the form of The Donalds, who feature Art Brut's Eddie Argos and the Wedding Present's Charlie Layton; ex-Wedding Present bassist Terry de Castro, Haiku Salut, Witching Waves and many others. Also on the agenda will be David Gedge digging out some 78s for a DJ set, a DJ set from Edie Argos and Charlie Layton's Wedding Present Bingo! GORDON BENNETT Alan Bennett: Talking Heads, 11 August Theatre Royal Brighton Andrew Kay ★★★★

Bennett’s TV plays make the transition from TV drama somewhat awkwardly. There is a lack of intimacy in the format that is not helped by the expansive nature of Francis O’Connor’s shaky set, and in directing, Sarah Esdale may have been far too concerned with accents than needed, which left Siobhan Redmond with a wobbly Harrogate twang via Brum and Karl Theobald, who fared better, on occasions lapsing into something far more home counties. That said both managed to convey the bitter sweet tragedy of these wonderful scripts. Siobhan Redmond finally finds her footing in the scene when her character finds a kind of peace in prison, and here she gives as good a rendering of the sadness of loneliness as one might hope to see. Karl Theobald is moving as Graham, the sad son who suffers from being… well what does he suffer from and how best do we describe this when former labels have all been denied us by the advent of political correctness? Graham has problems, lives at home with his widowed mother and does not work, Graham would perhaps now be described as having “other” rather than “special” needs but Graham is not stupid, just vulnerable and Theobald delivers this with skill. Bennett captures in words the now quaint language and manners of a Northern England that is perhaps disappearing if not already gone and one has to wonder how time will affect the work, will future audiences even understand the subtle nuances of that past age. Being Northern of course, and of a certain age, they ring home with distressing clarity – and never more so than when

the marvelous Stephanie Cole delivers “A Cream Cracker Under The Settee”, what’s a settee you may ask and that merely clarifies my previous point. Cole nails the accent, nails the nuances, delivers the humour with dour charm and the tragedy with stoic resignation. She plays Bennett with a realism that allows it to get right to the heart, one minute with joy, the next with heart wrenching sadness. Hers is a five star performance, moving but sadly too short.

Brighton Philharmonic Summer Season Sussex alumnus Barry Mills has a large following in Brighton and his work is well known in the offices of The Latest, so it was no surprise to find the church full today. His seashore inspired String Quartet (2007), like a water-colour sketch, was perfect for a wistful summer afternoon. Gordon Jacob’s Suite for Bassoon and Strings hit the spot too, lively and tuneful. Of course, the lightness of touch of Ani Batikian and Leo Payne (violins), Roland Roberts (viola) and Peter Adams (cello) made these performances to treasure. They concluded this very successful miniseason with Haydn’s flamboyant ‘Rider’ Quartet. Coda: The next Brighton Philharmonic season starts 11 October with Stephen Hough (piano). With three Coconuts and a funky sixpiece band the stage was a tight fit, but in his trademark zoot suit the Kid was part Cab Calloway, part James Brown and delivered hit after seamlessly segued hit to an ecstatic crowd. The energy from all members was infectious and they seemed to be having a ball with much sauciness from the leader reciprocated by the multitalented Coconuts. The finale featured a costume change and some justified “no brag, just fact” rapping on 'Wonderful Thing'. Supremely entertaining. Concorde 2, 8 August 2015 Steve Clements ★★★★★

Annie – Craig Revel Horwood Considering this show’s star plays cruel Miss Hannigan (and ‘Strictly’ presents his good side!), there’s no wonder the dancing isn’t just sharp but razor. The lavish Broadway set, band and production values are matched by a super-charged cast as slick and dapper as whenever these words were true compliments. However, very young and old didn’t come for these but for the troupe of scruffy, loud and fabulous young dames led by Sophia Pettit (or Madeleine Haynes or Isabella Pappas) as Annie herself, who danced, stomped and sang out through this Depression-based tale promising that better tomorrow. This heart-warming show delivers! Congress Theatre, 10 August 2015 Andrew Connal ★★★★★

Melissa & Joey E4, 7.30pm It’s good to look to the future, and Mel’s dead grateful that her Dad is on hand as someone she trusts to offer advice to Joe’s mother about drawing up a will. Hopefully they’ll get on. Oh, they got on. A bit too well. Yikes! We’re sure Mel and Joe will be all cool about it though, because they always behave like adults.

THURSDAY 20 Very British Problems Channel 4, 9pm In this age of equality, it appears that Grumpy Old Men and Grumpy Old Women have joined forces to form one big grump together. Hurrah! Maybe that was too enthusiastic. Talking heads muttering about the world at large include Jonathan Ross, Nigel Havers, Ruth Jones and Stephen Mangan.

Trapped In A Cult? Channel Five, 9pm With all of us living more and more disjointed lives, cults are probably all the easier to fall into. The Mindy Project E4, 9.30pm Mindy meets Peter’s flatmates for the first time and to say she’s taken aback by their rowdiness may be an understatement. Not to worry though, because Mindy has it all in hand. Sounds ominous. And it is for Danny. Plus things go a bit nutty for Jeremy and Morgan when they’re left holding the baby.

FILM: Minority Report BBC3, 9pm Arguably one of the best “woah, they got their visions of technology in the future pretty damn accurate” films in its prescient prediction of touch screens. It’s also a damn fine movie from Spielberg with frenetic, occasionally unsettling set pieces and a mind-fluffing story from author Philip K. Dick.
