here’s something very British about a good old cup of tea. It’s where we go to in times of stress, it’s the first thing we offer a tradesman when they come in to save your life when something in your home has broken. It’s even testament to how close you are to loved ones as surely you know how your mum, dad, brother, sister and best friend all take their tea by now. So how come no one ever remembers that I don’t drink the stuff? Coffee has an equally universal appeal these days too, having travelled over from the States where catching up with a friend in the daytime inevitably means ‘meeting for a coffee’. I’ve got nothing against any of it. It’s not an ethical thing regarding the people in the fields or a health one concerning the vast caffeine intake I’ve witnessed friends and family swear by. I’ve heard it’s good stuff, and definitely worth trying when you go to Vienna or Istanbul – a bit of local flavour. I’ve just never acquired a taste for it, and having seen the torments people have gone through to give it up (or even cut down) have no inclination to pick it up now. It does make things somewhat awkward though. There’s the aforementioned ‘meeting for a coffee’, where I’m sat sipping a juice box like a toddler that hid the jackpot playing with Tom Hanks’ ‘Big’ arcade lady in a box. Plus, whenever I go into someone else’s house for the first time I am the rudest person in town for declining their welcoming brew. Even after the first time, it’s such an unusual status apparently that even people I’ve known for years as well as family members still ask me how I take my tea. I don’t. But I do appreciate that you’ve thought of me. In recent years I have started drinking plain hot water in the Winter. It’s a halfway house I suppose. People still think it’s odd I’m not dipping a tea bag in there too (“I’ve got herbal ones too if you’d prefer...”) but I am taking a hot drink. And that’s all I’m having, if you’re asking.

AUTUMN/WINTER ESSENTIALS

GET ON BOARD

Bethanie Lunn, Style Ambassador for Churchill Square Shopping Centre navigates the Top Buys to Take You into Autumn fashion forward.

Brighton & Hove Buses, the only way to travel. This week: Timetable changes

an you believe autumn is just around the corner? Occasionally the weather tells me it has already but that’s good ‘ole Blighty for you! So with cooler months ahead, what should you invest in now to take you fashionably into autumn?

C

Autumn/Winter Autumn / Winter will be full of playful colour, fluffy coats and racy fabrics like leather, patent and even vinyl! In contrast, the TOPSHOP Unique show at London Fashion Week AW15-16, embodied a look of whimsical English countryside plus a nod to 60s and 70s appeal so hang onto your 70s gear from this summer. My favourite pieces were the oversized colourful faux fur coats and satin jackets with extravagant ostrich collars and cuffs. In fact, coats are going to be the main part of the outfit soon as Holly Fulton also showcased a range of patterned, fluffy and ruffled creations. Continuing on the racy edge, Julien Macdonald’s collection featured long leather gloves and boots, embroidered robes and sheer, open skirts. Henry Holland featured graphic, striped and chevron pieces and again, colour-pop furry gilets which you can spot in the shops already. River Island and TOPSHOP are leading the way. Look out for the House of Holland collection within Debenhams too which always features High Street versions of his catwalk looks. In contrast, Bora Aksu showed very delicate fabrics from silk to chiffon in softer hues that combined navy, lavender and variations of those with pretty dusky pinks. Apricot, Next, Dorothy Perkins and Zara will be excellent at this look.

n 13th September bus services in Brighton are changing. Most changes are small to improve relaibility but some routes have more significant changes, here's a brief summary:

Service 22

There is a significant improvement to Service 22. This route serves the Woodingdean area of Brighton. The frequency is being increased from every 20 minutes to every 15 minutes on Mondays to Saturdays. More time is being allowed for buses to complete their journeys in both directions with more catch up time provided at Brighton Station in order to improve reliability. These improvements are as a result of feedback from our consultation in Woodingdean and have also been suggested by Brighton Area Buswatch. Timings are also revised on Sunday evenings to provide better spacing with routes 2 and 21.

Service 25/25X There is a significant improvement in frequency between Old Steine and the Universities on Mondays to Fridays. Service 25 will now operate every 6-7 minutes between Old Steine and the Universities. To give students a quicker option of getting up to the campuses or into the city a new limited stop service 25X will operate every 10 minutes between Palmeira Square and Sussex University on Mondays to Fridays. Service 25X stops at all stops between Palmeira Square and Churchill Square, then at the same bus stops as service 28 along Lewes Road, then on Sussex University campus it’s the same as service 25 to Boiler House Hill, then direct to Falmer Station. The 25X won't serve Refectory Road, Park Village or the Brighton University campus. These places will continue to be served by service 25. Some journeys on services 25 and 25X will continue to start from and continue to Portslade Station in the rush hours. Services 25 and 25X will not stop in North Street on journeys towards the Universities. There are no changes on Saturdays or Sundays to the 25 other than no longer stopping in North Street.

Night Bus services

ANDREW KAY THE MAGIC NUMBER Shockingly bad at maths, I now find I have an obsession with numbers

I

’m lousy at maths and I know why. No-one ever told me what maths was for. Oh I admit that in later life I did realise that it had its uses, but as a child I saw no purpose in it and took absolutely no pleasure in it – whatsoever! Let me clarify, I could do money, money was a practical part of life and back then you needed to do money if you were going to make the most of that meagre weekly allowance of a half crown. And at that point I leave so many readers behind. “What’s a half crown?” Well a half crown was two shillings and sixpence or 30d. I hear the crashing of more souls by the wayside of time. “What do you mean d?” Well d stood for penny and no, I have no idea why. A half crown then seemed like a fortune, but then I could by four Blackjacks for 1d and that was enough to turn your tongue and your teeth coal black. On that basis your 30d went a long way. A mere 3d would buy you a quarter of sweets, not a quarter of a sweet but a quarter pound or four ounces (that’s 113.398 grams and I did that calculation online, I’m not that daft). Decimalisation happened on the 15th of February 1971 just three days after I turned 15. At that point I had spent the previous eleven years learning to count in

Watch Latest Entertainment on

Above all I was baffled by algebra pounds shillings and pence, weigh in ounces and pounds (a different kind, not £ but lb) and tons and so on, and measure in inches, feet, yards, miles… that’s not to mention bushels, chains, acres, hectares and pecks, gills, quarts, gallons… oh sorry, I did. Overnight everything was measured in tens, and much as I could see that it was a simpler system, there was a resentment that I was not alone in feeling. All those wasted years, tiresome lessons and of course my blind spot about what it was all for. Above all I was baffled by algebra. We had the most lovely teacher, a Mr Chaudhri, who we all liked and respected, but nothing he said made any sense. All I wanted to know was what is this for – and sadly he failed to convey that most vital bit of information. A+B might well have = Y but why indeed? Years later, at art school, I found out why and was able to put it into practice, albeit in a very rudimentary way.

Sums, you can keep ‘em. I can do money and measuring and I can count so what more do I need? The other day I found myself walking home with two new pairs of shoes. I love shoes but was very aware that it seemed odd to have bought two pairs suitable for winter wear on a steamy summer’s day. I decided as I walked that I should throw away two pairs of old shoes when I got home to make space but also because I perhaps have too many. On my return I found that I have 15 pairs of shoes, plus my bedroom slippers which as they never go out I have decided not to count. Fifteen including the two new pairs and excluding the two worn out pairs that went in the bin, yes they were too far gone to give to charity. Having counted the shoes I got a bit OCD and decided to count the shirts. There were 48 on hangers and a selection more in the laundry – and that is without the T shirts! When it came to socks I gave up at 52 pairs and I cannot tell you how many single socks there are in the sock orphanage right now. Why I keep them I do not know but I guess I live in hope that the other ones will return and I will have cause to kill the fatted calf-skin loafer. Suits six, pairs of trousers (not as a part of a suit) thirteen, shorts five, jeans (as opposed to trousers) five. I will spare you the underwear count but let’s just say that it’s excessive. Then there are the jumpers, jackets, scarves and my huge collection of silk ties and bow ties which are arranged by colour in a rather fetching manner. Dizzy from my counting I stopped and put the kettle on for a cup of tea, not as simple as it had been as my new kettle now asks what temperature I would like it to achieve. The new toaster does the same! Numbers everywhere. I sat with my tea, thought about all those clothes and hoped that they had not become the sum of my life.

HE WON’T SEND ROSES

Michael Ball stars in the thrilling musical tale of early movie making at Chichester Festival Theatre

B

ased on the true romance between Hollywood legends Mack Sennett and Mabel Normand, this musical comedy received eight Tony Award nominations when it opened on Broadway in 1974. This thrilling tale of trailblazers and stars is widely admired for its outstanding score including hits I Won’t Send Roses and Time Heals Everything. Not long ago, and without saying a word, a group of pioneering filmmakers changed the world. Helped by heroes in capes, and girls tied to the tracks, they made stars out of street kids, and riches from rags. But for writer, director, producer and owner of Keystone Motion Picture Studios Mack Sennett, forging a film is the easy part – compared to working, and falling in love, with a stunning one-off like Mabel. This dazzling musical comedy is both a poignant love story and a riveting tribute to the grit and glamour of the era of silent movies. Music and lyrics are by Jerry Herman (La Cage aux Folles) and the book by Michael Stewart (Barnum, 42nd Street), the multi awardwinning team behind the classic Broadway musical Hello, Dolly! Olivier Award-winner Michael Ball returns to Chichester to play Mack Sennett, following his celebrated

performance in Sweeney Todd. His other recent credits include the BBC drama That Day We Sang and Hairspray in the West End and on tour. He also has a successful recording and broadcasting career, and completed a UK concert tour in Spring 2015. Rebecca LaChance makes her Chichester debut as Mabel. Her recent credits include Betty and understudy Carole in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical on Broadway and Johnny Baseball directed by Gordon Greenberg. The production is directed by Jonathan Church, Chichester’s Artistic Director. His Chichester credits include Festival 2014’s Taken at Midnight (also West End) which garnered a 2015 Best Actress Olivier Award for Penelope Wilton, as well as two other nominations. Choreography is by Stephen Mear, Chichester’s Associate Choreographer. Chichester credits include Festival 2014’s Gypsy (currently in the West End) and Amadeus, as well as The Pajama Game (also West End) and Kiss Me, Kate (also The Old Vic). OLD SCHOOL HORROR utting edge in its day, White Zombie is the first feature length zombie film. Whilst we must forgive it many things for being a not-particularly well funded independent film, it is impressive for being a pre cursor. The story begins in Haiti with a carriage carrying a holidaying couple being stopped by a funeral…which is taking place in the middle of the road. The driver explains that the family do not want the body stolen so they are burying it where regular traffic will keep people from trying. The couple later cross paths with an eerie gentleman and his henchmen. The driver again explains that the henchmen are zombies. The couple, Neil Parker and his fiancé Madeleine, played by old silent film stars John Harron and Madge Bellamy, are staying at the home of Charles Beaumont to be wed. Unfortunately, Beaumont is rather taken with Madeline and will do anything to have her, including turning her into a zombie! He turns to ‘Murder’ Legendre, zombie master and pretty much a soulless devil. Played by Bela Lugosi he is everything one would want in an old horror film’s villain. Released in 1932 it is a Pre-Code horror film that allows for much moral ambiguity. The previously moral Dr Bruner attempts to murder the evil Murder by hiding and then stabbing him from behind! This is exciting in such an old fashioned film (old fashioned even when it was released) with the use of past-it silent film actors like Bellamy and Harron, whose mannerisms and flat line readings are ill-suited to sound film. It also employs a number of Expressionist touches - now considered beautiful - that were certainly falling out of fashion at the time. When Neil broods over the loss of Madeline in a nightclub we see no other patrons, just their shadows on the wall behind him. The eerie shadows emphasizing how alone and powerless he is. The film uses sound better than was common at the time; using music to create mood, an uncommon practice in the early years of talking pictures, and often startles the viewer with the use of the piercing cry of a vulture. Despite being occasionally stagy, there is more camera movement than in Dracula, and one scene in Dr. Bruner’s study is done with no cuts- only the camera moves around. Hitchcock would likely have appreciated this experiment in technique! A gripping whodunnit and social satire, a ghost story as well as a critique of the position of women in 20th century Britain, Rebecca is above all, says director Emma Rice, pointing to this production’s sub title, a “study in jealousy”. “It’s Cinderella meets Bluebeard,” says Emma with a smile. “But this Cinderella feels that she is not good enough to be the new Mrs de Winter and what woman has never felt the same?” There is for Emma a strong feminist theme to the story. It is about women being capable of all things: “rage, fear, manipulation, love, loyalty, sexual freedom and anger”. Above all, for Emma, the aim is to avoid any form of romanticism. “This is a psychological thriller and a horror”. The period of the novel is of major significance, according to Emma. “The late 1930s were a time of great foreboding, with a feeling of unease”. She says: “It was published a year before the war and I find the era very evocative. People were like icebergs with such a lot kept below the surface and a tension generated by what was implied rather than spoken.” Kneehigh’s many fans will be familiar with the company’s house style, a style that has been applied over the years to a number of classic narratives. How would Emma describe the company’s trademark to a Kneehigh newcomer? “We use a number of different elements; acting, music, film and design to tell the story and we stitch together a great big tapestry of ideas. Audiences coming to Rebecca will see a recognisable 1938 world - but with a twist”. Easy hints to live a happy & healthy life

HEALTH

What do readers want from a magazine article offering advice on health and well-being? Facts! • Good old fashioned scientific facts about what does and doesn’t work • How to stay healthier for longer. • Which foods really are the healthiest to eat? • How to shed pounds and look fit without devoting every minute to thinking about food and exercise. • Let’s face it, how to stay young effortlessly! First some facts about ageing. All parts of your body decline as the years progress. Your metabolism slows down. Your memory and reaction time slow down. The breathing capacity of your lungs diminish, your eyes have more difficulty focussing, your heart rate falls, your bones lose minerals, inflammation in your joints cause pain and stiffness, the list goes on. But you can moan about this, or you can stay positive and work out what to do about things. Reversal of the ageing process is big business, from cosmetic surgery and anti-ageing creams to superfood diets and exercise plans. Everyone seems to have an opinion and a vested interest in what works. We at Wave have been sifting through some of the latest healthy eating and anti-ageing research and these are our simple 7 top tips for a healthy long life:

1 Walking is good for you! Maybe even better than running. Scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California found that walking reduced the risk of heart disease by 9.3 % above running which reduced it by 4.3% (adults aged between 18 to 80 studied over a 6 year period). 2 Be a woman! Women live longer than men. The females of most species live longer than the males. Some evolutionary scientists say this is because females are able to repair cells better than the males. Some say it is due to healthier lifestyle habits but this may not always be the case with women living longer even in poorer health. For every 100 year old man there are two 100 year old women alive. Good for all three of them we say! 3 Exercise reaches the parts that other activities cannot reach. The current scientific recommendation is 150 minutes per week of moderate aerobic exercise, whether that is walking briskly, running, swimming, cycling and even gardening. You can do this in whatever size bursts suit you – 5 x 30 minutes or maybe 10 x 15 minutes. You know it makes sense as well as improving your immune system, fat distribution, muscular efficiency, nervous system and lowering your risk of getting type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. 4 All the usual superfood suspects are actually scientifically proven to be good for you: Oily Fish; almonds, beetroot, avocados, kale and green leafy vegetables, ginger, turmeric, green tea, seaweed, olive oil, grains such as quinoa, sweet potatoes, garlic, coconut, pomegranates and a nice piece (not too huge) of dark chocolate. So make the mother of all salads and tuck in. 5 Water. Good old fashioned plain water. It’s the most popular drink in the world; forget the wellknown fizzy drinks – seriously forget them and wean yourself off them. The recommendation used to be 8 glasses of 8 fluid ounces per day, but that really depends on your weight, whether you’re living in a hot climate and whether your lifestyle is sedentary or active. In general replace sweet fizzy drinks and hot creamy drinks with water. 6 Reduce sugar and salt intake. These flavour enhancers are being cornered. Now everyone is wise to reducing salt and sugar intake, but will the food industry giants ever take note? 7 Stay positive! In all sorts of ways. Sleep well. Talk through problems. Reduce stress. These things are not old wives’ tales anymore, there is good scientific evidence to back up the fact that positivity keeps you younger for longer. All easier said than done! But we at Wave will keep trying – even the men!

hat kind of idiot would slag off ITV's Flockstars? Well, OK, me, I guess, but that was a good fortnight ago. I've changed my mind completely now. If you've not yet been lucky enough to catch this programme, the idea is appealingly simple, as indeed am I. Eight human beings you've very nearly heard of are partnered with eight working border collies, and then, with the help of these creatures, taught the art of rounding up sheep. They do this by shouting special commands at the dogs, in a language I believe is Klingon. All being well, the dogs respond by steering the sheep, who are frankly idiots, around a special indoor obstacle course and into a pen. All being not so well, the dogs just sit there, staring at this human with a baffled doggy look that says: "Don't tell me, you were in Corrie, right? Blimey, you poor sod, has it come to this?" But the dogs are being mean if that's what they think, because, as I say, Flockstars is great. By which I mean fantastically undemanding. Fantastically undemanding TV should be given its own Bafta category, ideally replacing the Bafta they currently dish out for sport, which is a stupid category, given that any old numpty can point a TV camera at a football match. Flockstars' main plus-points? First, it's short, with only 23or-so minutes of actual airtime. As Britain's fourth most respected TV critic, I shouldn't say this, but I wish to God all TV programmes lasted 23 minutes. Especially those murder mysteries that drag on for hours. 23 minutes is more than enough for them to solve any case. ("Ooh, look, boss, a dead body. Any idea who the killer is?" "Yeah, it'll be the one played by this week's famous guest star, same as it always is...") Second, Flockstars has a high dog content, which is pretty much all any show needs to get me to watch it. That's provided nothing bad happens to any of them. If it does, I have to turn off at once. Seriously, I've switched off dozens of dramas before the end, purely because an upsetting scene has popped up in which a dog gets harmed. Also they were more than 23 minutes long. But ultimately the reason I've warmed to Flockstars is I find it dramatic. Seriously. Somehow I'm on the edge of my seat, genuinely anxious to see if, say, Thingy from that sitcom can get her sheep around the course faster then Wotsisname who used to be in that band with Tulisa Oojamaflip. Be honest, that's TV at its finest. Now, if you'll excuse me, it's time for my medication.

W

The idea is appealingly simple, as indeed am I.

THOSE WHO CAN TEACH K, now I’m going to show my age. But does anyone else remember the cult 80s kids’ programme ‘Why don’t you?, with the irritating song and even more irritating smug-faced primary school kids urging us all to ‘just switch off your television set and go and do something less boring instead’. Like cutting up paper or magic tricks. As if. It’s just that now that doesn’t seem such a bad idea. Especially with this year’s rubbish summer weather. And if you’re thinking of foregoing wet beer on a Jane Sampson, Solitaire windy beach for something more creative, there’s no better place than Ink Spot Press Open Access Studio – and no better teacher that Brighton’s queen of screen print – Jane Sampson. If you haven’t experienced Jane’s approach before, she creates works that contain a narrative using photomontage and collage from different sources. Often these include a mixture of found images and her own photographic or hand-painted images. This library of iconography is constantly being re-used and manipulated through different media, and the use of texture, colour and the layering of imagery are central to her approach. You can learn direct from the master at her studio - Ink Spot Press – where the team just love to screen print and do letterpress. They also make linocuts, woodcuts and collagraphs. They like to get their hands dirty making things in an analogue fashion (often quite slowly), but are not above using devious digital tricks to speed the process up and make it more accessible. If you are interested in learning how to screen print, use type, make books or find out about other printmaking techniques, there are loads of courses and summer schools. Just take a look at the Ink Spot Press website, inkspotpress.co.uk. www.artymagazines.com Twitter @brightonsarty

EMPIRICAL EMPORIUM A new season of top entertainment from Brighton’s impressive new theatre Emporium may be amongst the new kids on the block but so far they have been a theatrical force to be reckoned with. Already clocking up a stunning record of top reviews for their own and coproduced output they are now planning well into the future and have announced a solid programmes for both kids and adults alike. TOGETHER THE PEOPLE

Two of the biggest names in British comedy are coming to town – this week e prepared to be entertained this week. If ever you complain about there being nothing on in town to make you laugh this week, know that you do so in the full knowledge that you’re just not trying. This Thursday sees the happy return to the Brighton Dome’s Concert Hall of gagmeister extraordinaire Jimmy Carr. And if that wasn’t enough, on Sunday Michael McIntyre is taking over the Brighton Centre. So there. Both of these men have experienced backlashes over the years, chiefly for the major crime of being very successful at what they’ve chosen to dedicate time, energy and a large portion of their lives to (I’m not referring to Jimmy Carr’s nefarious tax issues here btw). McIntyre and Carr are both very successful and talented – that second part’s important, y’know – comedians. And because of that success all the channels on television wanted a slice of them. And then all of the television critics and a fair number of viewers pointed out that they’d seen them loads and could they have the next lot of comedians on please. The thing is, you don’t just get to do lots of telly because it’s your turn, you do it because you’re good. Which is why these two masters of comedy are packing them to the rafters in these not inconsiderably sized venues. Stand-up is an artform, and some of those who do it well are also asked to take part in other comedy formats. However, it is worth remembering that there is more to Jimmy Carr than a strange-sounding laugh and nifty stunts completed while the Countdown clock music plays. And Michael McIntyre has more than floppy hair and a ‘man drawer’ in his bag of tricks. Stand-up is their primary job. These are not lecture tours. As other ‘celebrities’ tag tours onto their fame, pretending that the shine of fame will rub off if they read a bit out from their latest book and answer a few questions from the audience. This is what these guys do. It will be better than the side-jobs. It will be better than the telly you’ve seen them do. Now, get out and see something good. You will be entertained. Terence Rattigan’s unsentimental War-Time-Weepy has more convincing plot twists than any ‘Agatha Christie’ and keeps you guessing until the very end, which will still surprise you. The typical ‘Dear John…’ love triangle soon has tears brimming, of both laughter and distress. Rattigan’s trick is to make us care for each of the characters, all of them. You’ll gasp silently at their fatal embarrassments (did they really say that?). The Countess, a cheeky under-age barman, the gunner’s wife, all are in peril under the authentic roar of bombers and the dangerous illumination of their flare path. Most at risk emotionally are the mess-room buffoon, his glamorous wife and the Hollywood cad, but none are quite what they seem. Youngsters with their lives ripped apart by war grow up before our eyes and find new, unbidden strengths. “I don’t understand… (love, RAF banter, Polish, The War)” but Rattigan does. The West-End golden boy was flying as a rear-gunner when he crafted this masterly tale and director Justin Audibert’s excellent cast, led impeccably by Olivia Hallinan and Leon Ockenden, make sure it rings true. Veteran Philip Franks brings jovial authority and producer Alastair Whatley shines in the complex role of the husband. Not-to-be-missed!

One might be forgiven a note of cynicism regarding the odds on original guitarist and drummer Michael Wilton and Scott Rockenfield’s being able to replace Geoff Tate, one of the iconic voices of the progressive metal scene, but Todd la Torre rises to the challenge with aplomb. Tight, focused and energetic, the band build up to a storming version of Queen of the Reich: the rock vocalist’s equivalent to the Queen of the Night’s aria. But the show ends abruptly, and unfortunately doesn’t quite satisfy. Concorde 2, 7 August 2015 Pete Langman ★★★★★

24 Hours In Police Custody Channel 4, 11pm You can follow Bedfordshire police officers from the cells at Luton Police Station to the heart of major crime investigations. A man behaves erratically while carrying a hockey stick after staring through the window of a woman’s house. Sounds like a David Lynchian nightmare, but expect less beauty.

Fried BBC3, 10.30pm Sitcom about the daily lives of the disgruntled employees at Croydon’s worst fried chicken chain. Mary resolves to go undercover to find out which employees are complaining about her. She announces that they will have a new employee arriving, before turning up in disguise as a Spanish man named Carlos.

WEDNESDAY 26 The Great British Bake Off BBC1, 8pm Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood look stern here, but don’t worry, just out of shot are Mel and Sue to lift spirits. Some designer handbags are brought in for an estimate, but will they help get their vivacious owner’s business plans off the ground? See how the other half live, and squirm.

A Brief History Of Graffiti BBC4, 9pm Dr Richard Clay goes in search of what it is that has made us scribble and scratch mementoes of our lives for more than 30,000 years. From the prehistoric cave paintings of Burgundy in France, through gladiatorial fan worship in Roman Lyons to the messages left on the walls of Germany’s Reichstag in 1945 .
