o you remember, way back when we were all at school and watching Blue Peter after it, when there were such things as time capsules? They were supposed to hold everything that represented who you were and what was important right at that very moment. It could be for the whole class or something you buried along with Tibbles at the end of the garden. Typical contents would be a Rubiks cube, a letter to your future self telling you not to be a pillock, photos of all your mates with a note saying who they were along with where and when the snaps were taken, as well as various other bits of highly personal fluff. I had a think about this the other day. That’s essentially my phone. A game, some snaps, lots of lost notes about books I want to read and the password to my home wi-fi, as well as pics of my friends and family, and pre-logged in Facebook. All I need to do to make a time capsule right now is drop my phone into a hole. And then bury it. Everything is on my phone, from the emergency phone number to call if I fall down a hole (and my mobile doesn’t), to the email holding my boarding pass from the last time I went to sunnier climes. The small four-digit lock code is actually quite feeble when I consider the amount of personal information stored. My Amazon Wish List and buyer’s history, a recipe for prawn and chicken risotto, Words With Friends scores and important family emails. It’s all there. We all have our own personal time capsules. There is such an abundance of information readily available on everyone that our greatgrandkids may know us better than our parents thanks to virtual clouds heavy with trivia and music prejudices. We don’t have the same editing privileges as the time capsules of the past – EVERYTHING is there. So maybe the thing to do is be a bit careful. After all, you don’t want your descendants to decide that you’re a numpty.

Brighton & Hove Buses: Quattro ticket – for nights out with friends
Dr Caroline Oprandi Keeping you up to date with science and technology at PACA often read the ‘Secret Teacher’ from The Guardian website and I was sad to see yet another teacher leave due to the immense pressures they are under. The secret teacher wrote, “20 August is the day of reckoning not just for every 16-year-old in England, but for every secondary school teacher too, the day where I felt a nail knocked into my teaching career coffin. Our results were the lowest in the entire school. Collecting the data, I felt physically sick. I knew with numbers like these my working life would no longer be the same. In my oversubscribed, overachieving school I would be labelled as an underperformer and afforded no second chances. If I stay, I will be made a scapegoat. When Ofsted visit our results will be critiqued and the department subjected to ongoing criticism and monitoring.” In 2014, when I was doing my teacher training, I was appalled to see this type of practice going on. Schools had changed so much since I was last there, especially this obsessive measuring of children against targets. So I took a look at the Department of Education School and College Performance Tables to see where the demand for all of this obsessive data collection comes from. The amount of information needed for these tables is eye-watering and it reminded me of when I would compile information as a Management Consultant for a Drinks Company. However, for this role I was measuring the production efficiency of machines producing orange juice cartons; not the efficiency of instilling learning into school children. The most absurd data entry from the government’s website has to be the ‘Value Added Measure’. The website states that: “the current Value Added Measure takes into account prior attainment (results at the end of Key Stage 2 and 3), which is the biggest single factor affecting pupil results. However, other factors outside a school’s control, such as gender, mobility and levels of deprivation, have been observed to have a further impact on pupil results, even after allowing for prior attainment. Taking these additional factors into account requires a more complex model, which we are in the process of developing and introducing, for use by the Department and Ofsted. We call this measure Contextual Value Added (CVA)”. Really?? So after years of the Department and Ofsted beating children and teachers with this VA measuring stick they have finally realised that “other factors” can affect a child’s learning. Trust and common sense is needed back in the teaching profession and fast; rather than complex, debatable measures that require vast quantities of taxpayer’s money in order to compile. On a positive note though, I have been nominated for an award to be presented at the House of Lords, by Lord Sainsbury. Apparently they were “enormously impressed by the nomination and really appreciate my immense dedication to inspiring young people in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths”. It’s ironic really that once upon a time I was focused on improving the efficiency of the production of Lord Sainsbury’s orange juice! Thankfully I am still able to see the distinction between the two roles: that school children are in fact children and not a carton with a number on from the end of a factory line.

he city of Brighton & Hove is famous for its varied nightlife and evening economy – from comedy clubs, nightclubs to bars. With that in mind, Brighton Buses have just introduced a new ticket to cater for group travel around the city in the evenings, called the Quattro. It allows up to four people to travel together, as a group, on the one ticket. Costing £7 it is valid for 60 minutes allowing people to change buses to get to their final destination should they need to. It's valid from 6pm onwards, 7 days a week, in the city area – with validity extending to Shoreham, Patcham, Falmer and Denton Corner. The Quattro ticket can be bought on Brighton Buses mobile app. The mobile app turns your phone into a bus ticket, you purchase the ticket via the app and it is ready to use immediately or later – just show your phone with the ticket activated to the driver when boarding the bus. For more information about the app visit buses.co.uk/app The ticket is also valid on Night Buses in the city, so if you’re out really late you can still get back as a group using this ticket. If you also didn’t know, on 13 September Night bus service is increasing on routes N1, N2 and N5 to run Monday to Saturday. Routes N7 and N25 continue to run every night. There’s more information about the Quattro m-ticket on the Brighton buses website – buses.co.uk. Please go to the tickets section and click on ‘m-tickets’.

LATEST PEOPLE Brighton and Hove City Reads celebrates 10 years of shared reading elebrating ten years of shared reading, City Reads (Brighton and Hove) is the longest running big read in the UK. The chosen book for 2015 is Matt Haig’s The Humans, an accessible, funny and inventive book that asks what it means to be human. People have already started the book and the celebration of reading culminates in events around Brighton and Hove from 10 October – 1 November. City Reads is an annual citywide reading festival which aims to spread a love of books and ideas to the widest possible audience throughout Brighton & Hove run by Collected Works CIC. The concept is simple: selecting one book by one author for the whole community to read, discuss, debate and creatively engage with in a series of special events, workshops and performances. On learning that The Humans was chosen for this year’s City Reads, author, Matt Haig said: “I am overjoyed to have The Humans chosen as this year’s City Reads title. I originally wrote the book as a kind of advert for the human race, and I wanted it to be a story that as many people as possible could enjoy. It was a very personal book for me, and I really hope you like it.” Sarah Hutchings, Artistic Director explains how proud she is that City Reads has such a special book to celebrate its 10th Birthday: “This book changes lives. Just go on Twitter and search ‘Matt Haig The Humans’ to see what I mean. As soon as I read the book, I knew we’d found our 2015 title. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it was a book I wanted to share with family, friends and acquaintances, so choosing it for Brighton & Hove’s annual big read seemed like the perfect way to do that. Matt has described the book as ‘a kind of advert for the human race’ a book he wanted as many people as possible to enjoy. That sentiment sums up the whole ethos of City Reads. Some of the people I’ve recommended it to have interpreted if very differently to me and isn’t that what a good book should do? Make us question, discuss and debate its meaning? One book. One city. A thousand conversations... read The Humans and be part City Reads 2015, I hope you love it as much as I do.”
C
The full programme of events will be revealed in September – but already announced is the big closing event featuring Matt Haig in conversation with Alex Clark (1 November, The Old Market); Human Poetry with Jackie Kay, Dean Atta and Vanessa Kisuule exploring the complexities of identity and what it means to be human (1st November, The Old Market)and a Sci-Fi Film Weekender including the acclaimed Under The Skin, Pinocchio and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (23 – 24 October, One Church, Brighton). For young creatives aged 16 – 25 there is a competition entitled Young, Human And Creative in which young people are invited to create work on what it means to be human in three categories – photography, writing and illustration – with a development opportunity as the prize in each category. Finally City Reads celebrates World Mental Health Day in partnership with Action for Happiness, with free events at Jubilee Library including: a Happiness Café, discussions about reading, featured mood boosting books and the chance of win copies of The Humans (10 October, Jubilee Library). Top international graffiti team take on Brighton i360 hoardings team of top international graffiti artists have covered 100 metres of hoardings at the i360 site after being brought together by local graffiti artist, Aroe. It will be the second time the site’s hoardings are handed over to graffiti artists, with Aroe and his collaborators having already decorated part of the site back in September last year. On that occasion Aroe was joined by regular companions Gary, Rebus and Radios. Aroe, Gary and Rebus returned to once again leave their indelible mark on the area but this time they were accompanied by an array of other, equally-talented local artists including Jiroe, Vodka, Morf, Warg, Ster and Past, as well as Yes B from Essex, Rench from Reading, Nottingham’s Alert and Europeans Twesh (Italy) and Relay (Germany) who both now live in the UK. Said Aroe beforehand, “We’re bringing a crack team of graffiti artists down to the beach on Sunday and we’re all excited to have such a big new slate to work on.” Where street artists use stencils or projections to aid the artist, graffiti is free hand and last time

Aroe recently painted an artwork of a naked Kim Kardashian on the side of a house in Oxford Place in Brighton, and earlier this year painted a giant Homer and Bart Simpson in Hartingdon Road, Brighton. previous work – not just on the attraction’s construction site but also elsewhere in the city. Said Eleanor, “Brighton and Hove is an incredibly creative city and we want our hoardings to reflect that and not just be left blank. We had a really positive reaction last time and, when we put up some additional hoardings when the tower erection started this summer, Aroe approached us about painting those boards too.

“Being on the seafront our hoardings do weather more than in most locations, but we hope the new artwork will last until the i360 opens next summer. The graffiti as well as our infographics about the i360 are proving incredibly popular with passers-by. “We have 100 metres of hoardings waiting to be covered and the artists have complete control over what they create.”

PAT’S P WHERE IT’S AT Patrick Kielty heads to the Brighton Comedy Festival next month, with his first live show in years – Help!
Watch Latest Entertainment on
atrick Kielty has been off making highly successful TV and radio shows for several years. But now he is returning to his first love: stand-up comedy. And he just can’t wait! Patrick, who has been a TV star since his breakthrough alongside Ben Elton and Jo Brand on Comic Relief’s St Patrick’s Day Stand Up Special in 1995, is simply delighted to be going back to his stand-up roots this autumn with a nationwide tour of his brand-new show, Help!. But he emphasises that he will be unable to do this alone – he will require your help. Patrick is trying to create a modern rulebook for love, life and happiness. So he urges us to bring our lovers, our advice and a crayon – and he guarantees to do the rest. The star of BBC 1’s Live At The Apollo, Dave’s One Night Stand and host of Radio 2’s BBC New Comedy Award, Patrick is a coruscating live presence. A stand-up gifted with “funny bones”, he merely has to walk on stage to get audience laughing. Phenomenally quick on his feet, he also enjoys a fantastic rapport with his legions of loyal fans. All in all, it’s an absolute joy to welcome Patrick back to the live arena. A rare example of a stand-up who is just as charming and funny off stage as on it, Patrick is chatting in the run-up to the tour. The comedian, who got married nearly three years ago to Cat Deeley, his co-presenter on the very popular BBC1 talent show Fame Academy, can’t contain his excitement about hitting the road once again. “I’m so thrilled to be touring again,” beams Patrick, who fronted the Channel 4 comedy series Last Chance Lottery and six seasons of his hit BBC1 chat show Patrick Kielty Almost Live. “There’s such a tremendous honesty to stand-up. If you look at other areas of performance, a certain etiquette exists. If someone sings a song, for instance, etiquette dictates that you give them a polite ‘cricket match’ round of applause – even if they’re off key. “But the thing about comedy is that you can’t fake laughter. Even if someone loves you, if the show isn’t that funny, then the best they can do is fix a grin and think, ‘Oh my God, someone please laugh!’ There’s an honesty in stand-up that isn’t in other forms. That means that when you do get a laugh, it gives you a real buzz!” Honesty is the hallmark of this show, Patrick explains. The comic, who is a regular voice on BBC Radio 2 and The One Show goes on to underline the importance of being straight with his audience. He says that, “As a stand-up, you have to be honest enough to talk about what’s going on in your life. You can’t fake it. There is only a quarter of an inch of microphone cable between you and the audience, and you’re saying to them, ‘I think this is funny – what do you think?’” Patrick continues that,

“I hope audiences leave the show saying, ‘I’ve seen him on TV and heard him on the radio, but I didn’t realise that in his stand-up he lays it all out there.’ It’s very important as a stand-up to have something to say. “Audiences don’t want to just hear gags. They want to know that what you’re talking about is something you’ve actually experienced that they can relate to. I’m saying, ‘This is my personal, honest story,’ and the audience like that.” In the past, Patrick has been known for more topical material, so Help! represents something of a new direction for him. The comedian, who discusses such personal areas as his childhood and his marriage in the show, reflects that, “It does feel like a departure. A lot of the stuff I have done previously has had a political edge. When I started out as a stand-up in Belfast, my brain became very politically tuned in. A lot of my
As a stand-up, you have to be honest enough to talk about what’s going on in your life. You can’t fake it. material was about what was going on in the world. “Now the audience reaction is, ‘Oh my God, I didn’t realise you’d be as personal as that.’ They have been very pleasantly surprised that I’ve been revealing as much as I have. The response has been so positive that I’m thinking, ‘Why didn’t I do this years ago?’” Patrick, who studied psychology at Queen’s University, Belfast, proceeds to outline the nature of Help! “I wanted to write a show about being happy. I’m 44. At that age, most performers are going through a mid-life crisis – ‘is this all my life is going to be?’ But the funny thing is, my life has gone the opposite way. Help! is about the opposite of a mid-life crisis. Things are going very well for me, and I’m genuinely the happiest I’ve ever been.” But there is a lovely twist to this show. Patrick carries on that, “I’m very happy, but because I have the Irish gene, I think, ‘Hang on, this can’t last. Something rubbish has to be around the corner!’ “Essentially, I’ve written a pre-emptive strike, I’m saying, ‘OK, guys, things are going very well, but what could potentially go wrong for me? Is there any advice you can give me?’ That’s the idea for the show. I’d rather do that than be sucked into being someone who pays £300 an hour to lie on a sofa and tell someone my problems!” Patrick adds that, “In the warm-up shows, the audiences have been giving me very solid advice. In the last fifteen minutes, I hand the show over to them. At the end of every show, we agree on one piece of advice. I write it down and tell them, ‘That’s going in my book.’ It’s a self-help book by deed poll! “A lot of couples come to the show, and because I’ll have been married three years in September, I get a lot of relationship advice from the audience. Still, at least I don’t have to write to ‘Dear Deidre’ now!” Patrick Kielty: HELP!, 15 October 2015, Komedia, £18/16, www.brightoncomedyfestival.com

have been fascinated by Mike Ward’s trials and troubles with the Apple Watch. I did sense that he was hasty in his initial dismissal, but rather surprised to read last week that he had relented and bought a new one. Well done Mike for embracing the new, I hope it proves to be a useful addition to your technological battery. I have started to wear a wrist watch again too, but a conventional one. My Skagen is about ten years old and works perfectly well at doing what it sets out to do, which is tell the time. I had stopped wearing a watch when my phone had become an easy way of telling the time – or at least so I thought. One day, laden with bags and running late, I struggled to get my phone from my pocket to see just how late I really was. The phone, once located, fell to the ground and the front smashed into thousands of tiny shards of razor sharp glass. Now I know that many of you will have done the same and I can see an iPhone from my desk that has a shattered facia. I was lucky and had insurance, but for a while I was terrified of using the phone in case a shard of glass severed my ear or a vital artery. I was of course rather cross with both the inconvenience and the case which I had been assured

The leather jobbie now languishes in the orphan sock draw with other illadvised purchases would offer ample protection from such an accident. It did not! I recently upgraded my iPhone to a new model and having done so discovered that the nice, and rather expensive case that I had bought, would no longer fit. I decided to buy a new one and looked in horror at the immense range on offer. There were slim ones, bouncy ones, ones with extra battery capacity (rejected as they made the phone as heavy as a brick), patterned ones and frankly rather silly ones. In the end I chose a rather smart brown leather one that had compartments for credit cards etc. I rather liked that idea, being able to take out my phone and leave my wallet at home. Within days I realised my mistake. The leather case was pretty useless. The front flap had no fixing so it... well, it flapped about. The leather was slippery and it was difficult to make a firm purchase on its surface with my hand and to be honest my pockets

were unable to hold the beast in place. Within days I had dropped the thing several times. Action was required. I decided to abandon it and buy something more practical. I looked around and chose the Tech 21. I had dismissed it at first as it seemed to be too simple and, forgive me, too inexpensive. I was wrong. Simple is good, it simply wraps my phone in a protective layer that has what appear to be bouncy buffers around the edges. It is inobtrusive too, I can see the phone properly and the rather clever, as ever, Apple sleek lines. The casing is easy to grip and it does not try to escape my pockets either – and there’s no silly flap to flap about. I’m embarrassed to say how much I spent on the leather case and I am too embarrassed to give it away as I know that at some point the recipient will drop it, break their phone and blame me. Over the years I have been very critical of the number of objects offered to us that are the triumph of fashion over function. Surely design should encompass both needs, looking good and actually doing the job in hand. The Tech 21 does that for me and in a rather stylishly discreet manner, it’s there working away in its own way without making a song and dance about it. I take my wallet with me again, it was only a trial separation and we are now on the best of terms once again and getting on as before. The case? Well it’s the Evo Mesh Sport, don’t laugh, I know I am about as sporty as a Zimmer frame, but that is the name and my model is a discreet black one, although it does come in a lot of rather vibrant colours which I guess could be described as sporty although I doubt that they will make you any sportier. Cost? Well £29.95 which is an awful lot less than the disfunctional leather jobbie that now languishes in the orphan sock draw with other ill-advised purchases. www.tech21.com

ITALIAN
traight Outta Compton, the story of pioneering LA gangsta rappers NWA is one of the most potent rags-to-riches showbiz films I have ever seen. The handheld camerawork and frenetic detail of the piece give the sense of a warzone as immediate as Zero Dark Thirty or Fury. The film’s story is made even more powerful by having been coproduced by the now-billionaire main members of the NWA. That is, ‘the story of the film’ not the ‘story’ of the film. There is an inherent conflict of interest with biopics of living musicians. The creators need to be on board in order for the songs that made them noteworthy to be included but bringing them in means they must end the film as heroes or at least the end must justify the terrible ways they have behaved. As such, the second half of the film is bloated with sanctification. It is the first half of the film, full of inspiration and exuberance, to which I refer in my first sentence! Director F Gary Grey’s two and a half hour opus, about the birth of gangsta rap on the west coast of America, crosses cultural boundaries to create a universal underdog story. Set in the late 1980s, in the poor and drug-addled neighbourhoods of LA, we follow three young friends with special talents. Eric ‘Easy-E’ Wright (Jason Mitchell) is a low level drugs runner with passion, his friend Andre ‘Dr Dre’ Young (Corey Hawkins) is a skilled DJ and they’re joined by talented teen poet O’Shea ‘Ice Cube’ Jackson (played by his son O’Shea Jackson Jr). Their lives are a series of indignities and confrontations; with the police who belittle their manhood and with older black men, who put their own pride first. Every scene concerns intense negotiations for power and dignity. Which is where the music comes in: these young men become visibly proud when they make music. They know they’re good, they know they have something and they know it is their way out. The film goes some way to explaining the obscene, vainglorious and incendiary rhymes that fill rap music. By proclaiming their power, they become powerful. These three men (and assorted hangers on, whom everyone seems to forget about very quickly) chase breakthrough after breakthrough. The naked ladies and conspicuous consumption – so many gold chains! – are not a by-product of their newfound celebrity. They are the whole point. Making money and boasting about it is their art form. Rapping is just a way to do that. Yet, they will never be truly comfortable, they will never feel that what they have is enough – and that is a tale we can all relate to. THE COSTUME GAMES

Moshimo brings you The Costume Games, kicking off the Rugby World Cup 2015 with five days of well-attired style & sensation
people dress up and get into character: Academy Award winner Lindy Hemming (Topsy Turvy), Vin Burnham (Batman, The Fifth Element), Day Murch (Batman, Star Wars), and Rob Allsop (Doctor Who, Dredd) will be just some of the costume designers joining him for what is being dubbed ‘Costume Clinics’, where people will be able to create and develop their individual costumes. “The Costume Games is about people getting dressed up in costume – but we didn’t just want people to dress up, but parts of the city as well,” says Nicholas “This is why we have invited Lady Aiko, a famous Japanese street-artist living in New York, to come and ‘costume’ walls in the city with her daring and beautiful art.” Lady Aiko will be one of the many artists and members of the general public who will be invited to the Old Steine on Wednesday 16th September to help “costume the gardens”, turning the Old Steine into the home of The Costume Games for the following five days. Each day of The Costume Games will be themed differently: Wednesday 16th will see Brighton Japan launch the games with a MOSHIMO Supper Club and Japanese entertainment and art, and Friday will see the launch of ‘1980’s Costume Cinema’ with screenings of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Fame. “We’ll have Gladrags, the wonderful costume charity, on hand to help people get dressed up when they arrive, so nobody can have any excuse not to delve into the dressing up box,” says Nicholas. The weekend will see the Costume Gardens become base camp for the Costume Carnival – a hive of action where people will visit the Costume Clinic to prepare their costumes for “flash mob” performances and stunts taking place all over the city, followed in the evening by an outrageously funny 70’s Glam Rock Tribute band from Liverpool called Kookachoo. Sunday 20th is Sing-a-longSunday! The Costume Gardens becomes the stage for ever more histrionic delights as both children and adults sing-a-long to screenings of Mary Poppins, Sound Of Music... and – yes – Frozen. And what will we all do when The Costume Gardens closes its doors on Sunday evening? We’ll all live happily ever after, is what we’ll do. The Batsuit, worn by Christian Bale in The Dark Knight, is being displayed at the Brighton Museum until 21st September. Lady Aiko’s residency in the City is being sponsored by Art Republic, which owns Ink_d gallery, where her work will be exhibited from 11th – 20th September. www.thecostumegames.com n

ou are being invited to “dress up and play” over five days in September – and you’ll be helped to do so by a group of professionals who have created some of the most enduring and iconic characters of the big screen. This is the idea behind The Costume Games, the brainchild of Brighton’s popular Japanese restaurant, MOSHIMO, who are putting on the city’s main cultural festivities for the opening weekend of the Rugby World Cup this year. “Our ambition is to transform the city of Brighton into one big stage where people can act out their fantasies through costume – all with the help of the some of the world’s leading costume designers,” says Nicholas Röhl, co-owner with Karl Jones of MOSHIMO and Festival Director of The Costume Games. “We want to recreate the feeling we all had as children on discovering a dressing up box. We want to reignite the joy of getting into character – of becoming someone else, or someone you’d like to be, through costume...” says Nicholas. “Another reason why we’re doing this is because Karl, my business partner, was desperate to try on his Stormtrooper outfit,” he adds. The idea came out of MOSHIMO’s festival, Brighton Japan, which has over six years become the largest outdoor Cosplay festival in the UK. Cosplay (made up of the words ‘Costume’ and ‘Play’) originated from Japan and involves people dressing up as their favourite film, TV, and gaming characters. “Cosplay is a growing phenomenon, but it is still relatively niche,” explains Nicholas. “We wanted to open it out to everyone and make The Costume Games the most riotous dressing up event ever.” One of the big events will be the ‘Viva Las Elvis’ night (Thursday 17th), when the Old Steine ‘Costume’ Gardens will be turned into a Las Vegas Casino to help raise money for Martlets. “Our target is to get a thousand people dressed as Elvis to come,” says Karl. To help them with creating The Costume Games MOSHIMO was lucky enough to find Graham Churchyard, who lives in Brighton, who has been the costume special effects supervisor on some very big films: he helped design the Batsuit for Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, has worked on Marvel movies such as Avengers Assemble and Guardians Of The Galaxy, and is presently on the set of the Stars Wars film. Graham has pulled together an extraordinary team that would only normally be found on the set of the biggest of Hollywood movies to help

THE FOOD OF LOVE
Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival continues to raise money for two local charities
or many years now the Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival has been committed to providing exciting and entertaining foodand drink-related events for the people of the city and its visitors, with a wide range of open access and free events as well as a programme of ticketed events. Many of those ticketed events have over the years been designated as fund-raising opportunities for the festival’s chosen charities. We asked festival managing director Nick Mosley to explain. “The festival has proudly supported Rockinghorse and FareShare Sussex for over four years, raising tens of thousands of pounds to support their vital work making the lives of sick children better, and ensuring those in food poverty have access to good and nutritious food. During our Sussex & The World Weekend over the August bank holiday we raised £1,860 for FareShare with our friends from 64 Degrees, English Wine Producers, La Cave à Fromage and local vineyards – that amount covers the cost of

redistributing five tonnes of food providing over 10,000 meals! In addition we raised around £1,000 for Rockinghorse through children’s activities and our Boho Disco.” – Nick Mosley, festival director.
The festival has proudly supported Rockinghorse and FareShare Sussex for over four years We asked Beth Parry at Fareshare to comment: “FareShare Sussex is a charitable project that redistributes surplus from the food industry out to organisations working with vulnerable people across the community. It enables the provision of thousands of meals to those in need every week. The food is sourced from all along the supply chain including producers, manufacturers and wholesalers through to retailers and cafes. It is then allocated to
FareShare’s member organisations and prepared for delivery to around 70 different projects each week, including day centres for the homeless, lunch clubs for isolated older people and food banks for low-income families. FareShare relies on regular donations and community support to keep the warehouse rent paid, the fuel in the vans and the volunteer expenses covered, without which the project could not exist. “The ongoing support of the Food Festival and its partners allows FareShare to spread its message across the whole community, and raises significant amounts of money for us to achieve our three core objectives – to alleviate poverty, reduce food waste and support disadvantaged people. We love to be part of something locally that is celebrating food, and the Food Festival allows our important message of preventing good food from ending up in landfill, to reach passionate local foodies.” – Beth Parry Fundraising & Communications Manager There are lots of ways you can support the project: To make a one-off or regular

You might even be able to refer businesses or charities. Put us in touch with suppliers or charities that would support or benefit from the service. We also spoke to Analiese Doctrove at Rockinghorse, the festival’s other charity: “Rockinghorse Children’s Charity, based in Brighton, has been supported by the Brighton and Hove Food & Drink Festival for the last five years. The Food Festival has raised over £10,000 supporting our work at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and Trevor Mann Baby Unit providing vital facilities, services and medical equipment. “Not only has the food festival enabled the charity to raise money at their many fantastic events including Make Your Case and the Children’s Food Festival they have also helped us to spread the message of our work across the city, ensuring local people know who we are and what we do. For our charity this is invaluable and for that we are incredibly grateful for all of their support.” – Analiese Doctrove If you would like to find out more about the work of Rockinghorse and the partnership that they have with the food festival then please go to www.rockinghorse.org.uk/events/2 015/childrens-food-festival To find out more about Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival then go to brightonfoodfestival.com

Drink Festival as award-winning chefs took to the stage wice a year now I gather with my foodie friends to create the Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival. I love it, I love the events, the dinners and most of all I love the Live Food Show which takes place for two days each festival in the main marquee on Hove Lawns. I do similar shows in both London’s Fitzrovia and Kingston upon Thames and they too are great. But I am not well known there and here in Brighton I sense that I get so much support from both regular festival fans and of course from readers of Latest 7. This August was no exception and as the drizzle persisted outside the tent I was delighted to see so many familiar faces in the audience and so many new ones too. Some of you

On the Live Food stage we have the very best of Sussex & beyond come along and stay all day both days, some because there is delicious free food but mainly I think because you are fascinated to see what the very best local chefs are currently creating. I use the word ‘creating’ because the word ‘cooking’ no longer seems to cover what they actually do. Brighton is riding high in the culinary world right now with so many of our local restaurants and chefs featuring in top restaurant lists and winning national awards. I’m proud to say that on the Live Food stage we have the very best of Sussex and beyond and this time was no exception.

MIKE WARD AT LARGE THE MAX FACTOR

BRIGHTON’S ARTY

here’s one big question I find myself asking whenever I see Strictly Come Dancing beating The X Factor in the ratings. Namely: “Why?” Or occasionally even: “What the ****?!” OK, two big questions. But it’s the same mystery. Why on earth would people favour BBC1's celebrity ballroom dance show – which, don't get me wrong, is perfectly pleasant – over the funniest talent contest in the history of British television? Beats me. I can only assume they’re missing The X Factor’s point. I say it’s the ‘funniest’ because surely, after all these years, we've twigged that this is what The X Factor is really about. The actual talent-search bit – hunting for a winning act that’s in another stratosphere from the others, launching them on a career path that will turn them into global megastars, adored by millions, showered with untold riches, rarely off the top of the charts, blah blah – is a bit pants, and always has been. That’s why it failed to pick populist fodder such as One Direction and JLS as winners – but has given the title, over the years, to dreary and/or nondescript acts such as Matt Cardle, Steve Brookstein, Joe McElderry and Leon Jackson. Between us – the judges and the public – we’ve frankly made a right pig’s ear of things, voting-wise. But who cares? We shouldn’t let that put us off the programme itself. Which is why I’d urge fans who’ve started turning away from The X Factor – and who don't feel entirely thrilled that it's back, despite the new hosts, new judges, and assorted tweaks – to reconsider their position. Instead of thinking: “I can't be bothered with this any more, it's let us down too often, choosing winning acts that vanish into obscurity...” – in other words, treating the actual talent show element as if it actually matters – you should be thinking: “This is fantastically bonkers.” From the pantomime bickering of the judges, to the crazily inappropriate song choices, to the booming, bombastic presentation, it’s there for us to sit back and chuckle at. And in that sense, it’s funnier than ever. Despite what its hype implies, most years The X Factor stands about as much chance of creating an international chart megastar from its winner as does The Great British Bake Off. Obviously, it'll never admit that, but it doesn’t need to. The statistics speak for themselves. But big deal. That's no reason to stop enjoying it. It’s simply a matter of lowering our expectations. My advice? Ignore the twaddle about it discovering the next pop legend. Just watch The X Factor for its sheer, unrivalled comedy value. And with that in mind, vote for the act that’s most likely to hack off Simon Cowell. Mike Ward is the TV Critic of the Daily Star and the TV Editor of the Daily Express Saturday magazine. Hear him every Monday afternoon with Guy Lloyd on Brighton’s Juice 107.2

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL very picture tells a story. And there are no better storytellers than the artists themselves. It’s always fascinating to discover the inspiration behind a piece of work – and the thought and technical processes that went into its creation. That’s why the annual Brighton Art Fair is a must-visit event on every art lover’s calendar. A perfectly curated mix of established and emerging artists offering a feast for the eyes as they pack the Corn Exchange with exceptional artforms in every medium you could wish for. Excited? So are we. Especially as this year’s exhibitors include so many of our favourites. Such as Dawn Stacey, whose paintings are usually based on nature in the landscape and evolve from walks with her dogs on a local nature reserve or surrounding landscape where she Dawn Stacey, Silent River Reflections absorbs ideas, memories and nature in the landscape. Dawn’s paintings are built from layers to reveal imagery – perhaps incorporating a frosted leaf, teasels or embedded wild flowers intended to capture the essence or mood of a place. Christina Fedyk graduated from Leicester De Montfort University with a Fine Art Degree. She expresses her creative ideas through painting, printmaking and 3D work. In observing the details of daily life, she collects a wealth of imagery that then informs a process of markmaking and abstraction. This dialogue shifts and changes until the overall image begins to convey an energy, emotion or a sense of its own. Dawn exhibits throughout the UK, and a collection of her paintings has been bought for a Brighton Hospital Trust and St. Wilfrid’s Hospice. She has Christina Fedyk, Black Skew also been featured on the front cover of Latest Art and the Artwave brochure. Her paintings were recently reproduced for a collection with John Lewis. Helen Brown’s work is inspired directly from the landscape. She works outside with woodblocks, drawing and carving from life. Working outdoors enables her to capture the line and fluidity of scenes and localities. A great lover of the South Downs and Sussex, many of her blocks are cut in the local area. The time of day or year can dramatically change the landscape colour and form. Helen uses methods such as blends, jigsaw blocks and chinecollé to give each of her pieces individual life. Helen teaches woodcut, along with the other areas of relief printmaking here at bip-Art, happily sharing her knowledge and love of this artform. FRESH MEAT
BRIGHTON ALTERNATIVE JAZZ FESTIVAL
The Brighton Comedy Festival ushers in a new set of Squawkers Awards heats tarting next week, the first taste of the Brighton Comedy Festival arrives in the form of the Squawker Award heats. Exciting! In case you’ve been living under a rock the last few years in October, the prestigious Squawker Awards is the lead in to the Brighton Comedy Festival, running four heats – one every Tuesday approaching the start of the festival proper – in the search for the comedy stars of the future. With around eight newish acts in each heat, these are competitors that have already cut their comedy teeth on new act nights and are primed to break through to the next level. And they’re hungry to win the title and the top prize of stage time at the Brighton Dome’s Concert Hall. The Squawker Award started relatively recently in 2012, with Ingrid Dahle the inaugural winner. Dahle went on to be a finalist in that year’s So You Think You’re Funny competition, and the accolades continue so that this year she was named the Leicester Square Comedy Festival’s runnerup to its respected Leicester Mercury Comedian of the year award. Other Squawker finalists include Laura Lexx, Funmbi Omotayo, Sam Savage, Alasdair Beckett-King, Mark Silcox, and David Jordan. All of them making their marks on the national comedy scene, gigging on bills alongside such luminaries as Stewart Lee, Mark Steel, Joel Dommett and Francesca Martinez. So this is the fresh batch. The new faces. The honed talent ready to go stellar. Having shorn away rough edges on the new act circuit for at least a year, playing across the South East in Brighton, London and beyond, it’s time to see the sparks fly – comedically speaking. Tickets to the heats are only £6, and take place in the lovely Komedia Studio. With the Squawkers Final a part of the Brighton Comedy Festival itself in Komedia’s main room later in October. It’s a very affordable way to keep your finger on the pulse of emerging quality comedy. And a plain enjoyable night out any Tuesday in the foreseeable future. For instance, there is the KiermyerBirchall Transcension, who feature Nat Birchall on saxophone. Dedicated to keeping the spirit of John Coltrane alive, he'll be playing with Canadian drummer Franklin Kieryer, who has worked with the likes of Pharaoh Sanders. This will be the first ever performance of these two together. Also on the bill on the Friday there's the Sarah Gail Brand Sextet, led by this experienced British composer, improviser and trombone player. She will be performing her open-ended compositions, influenced by Charles Mingus, with a sextet of improvisers including drummer Mark Sanders and pianist Liam Noble. And the percussion and

again featured his own two bands performing an album in full alongside an international line-up of indie’s finest, most of whom threw in a Wedding Present or Cinerama cover. Local acts were well represented with My Life Story delivering a triumphant, high-kicking comeback set and Fiction Aisle’s orchestral pop a sweet start to day two, that also included The Nightingales’ punk funk, Eddie Argos’s new tribute band and TV soundtracks recreated by Dream Themes. With such a genial host, raffles, bingo and no camping this was the perfect festival. Concorde 2, Sat 29 and Sun 30 August 2015 Steve Clements ★★★★★
Manchester Orchestra
Happy And Glorious was the name of the tour and Michael McIntyre absolutely delivered on that promise. Opening up the evening with videos of his fans doing impressions of him was a great start to the evening. An interactive but unobtrusive comedian always goes down a storm. McIntyre has an air of likability about him, his jokes are not too risqué but hit home with everyday life, so everyone can relate and ultimately laugh at themselves. Selling out four nights at the Brighton Centre is no easy feat, let alone filling such a large space with presence and energy but McIntyre pulled it off. There were no awkward silences, McIntyre definitely stays safe with his content but it was 100 per cent funny from beginning to end.

At The Edge Of The Sea Now in its seventh year, David Gedge’s Bank Holiday weekender
“Just ’cause I’ve come here to play doesn’t mean you can waltz right into my life”, announced frontman Andy Hull. Living up to his word, Andy, along with the four other band members, managed to consistently lull the audience into a false serenity before thwacking them out of place with a powerhouse of noise. Each song an anthemic masterpiece, crafted to perfection but still maintaining an honest grit. This harmonic discord was welcome, and substantiates why Manchester Orchestra are at the top of their game. Concorde 2, 27 August 2015 Abigail Hyland ★★★★★
