hen I was a kid my grandparents were always losing their keys. There was a special hook in a cupboard in the kitchen all the keys were supposed to live on, with various keyrings hanging bulkily off at angles, but still the keys were hunted for high and low, in alternate handbags and jacket pockets. The best invention my grandparents discovered (apart from the one-handed tray my other grandmother invented and sold via ads in the local newspaper) was a small keyring thingy that let out a beeping noise when you whistled. Keys would never be lost again. Wheh-hey! And we didn’t even mind that the resident parrot took next to mimic the call and retrieve noise. Of course after a bit the batteries started to go and that became another pack of things to fill the odds’n’sods drawer with. But for a while, lost keys were a thing of the past and there was a jolly atmosphere as the cottage they lived in echoed with the sound of hopeful whistles in every room. Over the years I have longed for a box-full of those keyring thingy beepers as various ‘safe places’ have proven optimistic but barren. I even have a safe – the ultimate ‘safe place’ you would think. Most of the time my passport lives on top of it and very little lives inside it. I’m too scared that I’ll pop my valuables inside and then lose the key. It’s a ridiculous state of affairs. And another lost key! In an ideal world I’d attach a keyring thing beeper to my passport, my Network Card, my headphones, the remote control for the digibox... To be honest, wishful thinking with these contraptions has usurped my previous wishful thinking leader, that had me grabbing free taxis when I saw them and putting it in my pocket for later. Instead I am halfway there. I don’t know where my Network Card is – that’s true – but there is a perfectly formed hook hanging in my own kitchen, and on it hangs a set of keys. Exactly where they’re supposed to be.

UNLOCKING POTENTIAL

GET ON BOARD

Brighton & Hove Buses: Our South Downs Bus

Dr Caroline Oprandi Keeping you up to date with science and technology at PACA Philip Avery

his article by Philip Avery from Bohunt School is so good that I thought I should share it. It really does highlight how to address STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) within schools. "We hear a lot in the media about the need for more engineers, for our students to be more 'work ready' and for our education system to improve. I wanted see what other countries are doing and how they are answering these challenges. In doing so I found lots of great ideas, but also I learnt that maybe we're looking for some of the wrong things. We are looking for more able students to go on to be engineers when we should be ensuring that every student leaves secondary school 'STEM literate'. By looking for more engineers we ignore, to an extent, that quality counts; we don't just want more, we want more British engineers who have creative, quirky minds that can come up with transformational ideas, not just superbly engineered products. Finally, schools need to be asking 'what can we do for them' not just 'what can they do for us' when linking with businesses." Without a simple, clear vision for the sort of learning and learner that a school is looking to develop, the best technology and the best learning environments will become distractions rather than aids. In Sweden, where the government pays for every child to have a tablet or laptop, this initiative has seen every sort of impact from hugely positive to negative. Businesses, universities and schools need to build in-depth, long term partnerships, not interact through one off 'inspiration' events. Teacher training is crucial and we need to think broadly about how we do it. Priorities could be Initial Teacher Training for engineers that qualifies them to teach multiple STEM subjects as well as 'STEM lessons'. Phil says, “I visited some really innovative programmes and was particularly impressed by the ambition of schools like High Tech High in San Diego, the Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia and Metameer in Boxmeer. These were schools with a clear vision for education, unafraid to follow it even if it didn't link directly to exam results. These schools were committed to innovative, yet rigorous education and the students were achieving more than you would think possible: work experience that involved training UK teachers in Project Based Learning, patents to improve wind turbines and improvements in the manufacturing processes of the petrochemical industry.” "What British schools do really well is classroom craft; there were few places I went where the quality of explanation, the differentiation and the rigour were better. However, too often, education combining content, skills, creativity and a focus on process are confined to after school. We want to bring STEM, real world working and education that will inspire students about STEM subjects to the heart of the curriculum so it can be enjoyed by all, rather than those already motivated."

ntroducing our beautiful new South Downs bus – with its soft colours, vintage interiors, original artwork and lines from a famous poem by Tennyson. This is the third in our Get Bus(y) series celebrating the amazing things to do and see in and around our city. This time we’re paying tribute to the wonderful natural playgrounds of countryside and coastline on the city’s doorstep – the South Downs National Park and Brighton & Lewes Downs Biosphere. We want to inspire more people to explore this rich tapestry of wildlife, landscapes, tranquillity and history – by bus. Artist - Inspired And talking about inspiration, the South Downs bus – designed by Brighton’s Harrison Agency – pays tribute to Sussex artist Eric Ravilious, whose work during the 1920s and ‘30s included many South Downs landscapes. Ravilious’ engravings and woodcuts, and his use of patterns and blocks of pastel colour were the inspiration behind the bus’ unique ‘wallpaper’ design. “His work is amazing – in many ways it looks so contemporary, so fresh. It really has stood the test of time,” says designer and illustrator Jamie Eke. The bus interiors have a vintage 1930s theme and were designed by Scott Welti (Jamie’s colleague at Harrison Agency) working with Chloe Bullock from Brighton’s Materialise Interiors. Inside and out you’ll find lines from a poem by Tennyson, who loved the South Downs: You came, and looked and loved the view, Long-known and loved by me, Green Sussex fading into blue, With one gray glimpse of sea. Days out in the Downs The National Park and Biosphere offer great experiences within easy reach of the city. There’s the fresh air and freedom of the great outdoors, the special landscapes, rare downland, chalk reefs, and fantastic views. And plenty to do – from walks and rock-pooling to country pubs and cafes, farm shops and vineyards, artists’ studios, historic houses and gardens, picturesque villages and towns. For great ideas about getting out and about in coast and countryside, go to www.visitbrighton.com/countryside/home. To see original works by Eric Ravilious, catch a Coaster to Eastbourne’s Towner Gallery.

Parking meters on the way out Drivers in Brighton & Hove are being urged to register with PayByPhone for parking, as a plan to remove half of the city’s parking cash machines gets underway. Contractors have now removed about a quarter of the 600 machines due to go. The move is expected to save £250,000 a year in costs of maintaining machines and emptying them of cash. But the council has been flexible – leaving some machines in place where locals have expressed concerns. Since the system was introduced in the city in September 2013, 155,000 people, both locals and visitors, have used PayByPhone here – making it the tenth biggest user of the mobile service worldwide.

ANDREW KAY PIES & ALE Excellent Sussex beer prompts memories of divine Lancashire pork pies

I

recently started working from home and thought that I would put my desk in a corner of the bedroom. At first it seemed like a good idea, there was plenty of space for it and I would not have to look at work when I was relaxing in my sitting room. I was so so wrong. The computer faced my bed and no matter how I tried its presence was Big Brotherlike, staring back at me as I tried to get to sleep and from time to time bursting into spontaneous life and lighting up the room like Blackpool seafront. Conversely the bed would be lurking at my rear all day long, tempting me to take a quick power nap. I wish I could power nap but daytime sleeping gives me a terrible headache, akin to a hangover – which conveniently ties the two threads of the tale this week. Having realised that the bedroom was a mistake I decided to move my desk into the corner of the sitting room which housed my plan chest. Other than that it was a dead alcove that served very little purpose. The move was not without stress, the furniture is heavy and living alone meant that I had to improvise a means to move it. The night before I had seen a story on the news about Stonehenge and the new discoveries. It reminded me that those mighty stones had been moved on rollers so I went to the kitchen and found my rolling pins. Pretty soon I was moving things around with ease and putting my office back together in the alcove. Pleased with my efforts I spun round in my swivel chair only to realise that I was now sat next to my ridiculously extensive drinks cabinet. It’s stocked with a ludicrous amount of booze of all kinds, several whiskies and gins, some vodkas and endless liqueurs. I swivelled back and saw reflected in this very monitor the open door to my small cellar, again stacked with bottles of wines and beers. Realising I was expecting a visit from Latest Bill I was aware that I look like a dipsomaniac – which is far from the truth. The truth is that I do not like to drink alone and because I live alone I seldom touch the stock that I have. Out and about with my friends I can certainly knock back a few, but at home it is a rare thing and I am more likely to be found with a glass of Vimto, I am after all irredeemably

northern. I’m no booze-free evangelist that’s for sure but drinking alone I see as the path to

I delved behind the black puddings and things and pulled a bottle out ruin and I love being able to offer guests a drink when they do come around to see me. I remember when I was younger that I would buy bottles of wine as and when I needed them. Invariably this meant that I would buy one, take it home, open it and drink it. There was never a bottle of wine in the house that had not been bought for immediate consumption. Now there is always wine in my home with no defined consumption point, and as a consequence it seems to last longer. Right now there is champagne in the refrigerator and wine that has been there for at least a month if not longer. It does not tempt me, really it does not. I can open the door and not even notice it’s there. After shifting all the furniture though I did feel like I deserved a reward and I remembered that I had been give a couple of bottles of beer to try. Yes I do get sent some rather nice things from time to time. I knew that I had put them to chill so I delved behind the black puddings and things and pulled a bottle out. It was cool and enticing, a perfect

way to wind down after lugging furniture about. I popped the cap and slowly poured it into a clean glass, I’m not butch enough or vulgar enough to ever really want to swig beer from a bottle, and I sat down on the sagging and soon to be replaced sofa (yes another sofa drama). The beer was a delicious surprise, clean and crisp, like a continental lager in many ways but with a full hoppy flavour, rich malty notes and a delicious citrus tang. There you go, I can sound like a pro! The beer is Bedlam Brewery’s new Pilsner and although it does not immediately strike a note as being like a continental Pilsner it does carry some of those characteristics. I may have been swayed by the cooling power of the brew after a stretch of unaccustomed physical exertion but it really was delicious. With my foodie head in gear I was already matching it to menu ideas, beer and food matching being very much of the moment. I then realised that I had in the same refrigerator a secret pork pie. Do you not have secret pork pies? I do from time to time. It was a reasonably good one by southern standards, again my northern roots drive me back to memories of Burchall’s pies in St Helens – food of the gods and 175 years old – the business not the pies. If you have never had a Burchall’s pie you have never experienced pie heaven. There is another bottle of Bedlam Pilsner cooling but now I want that divine pie to go with it. The one in the refrigerator simply did not match up to the quality of the beer and stirred up memories of walking down the street with a hot pie and the peppery juices running down my chin. I’m glad that my mother cannot read this as the very idea of eating on the street would fill her with horror and prompt a clout around the ear. bedlambrewery.co.uk (Burchall W J, 24 Westfield St, Saint Helens, Merseyside WA10 1QF 01744 23048)

H

i Mark, how is life treating you this week? Rushing about chasing my tail but happy.

Your ‘100 Acts Of Minor Dissent’ a couple of years ago, was a marvellous combination of mischief and political flagging of liberty infringements. Which acts of dissent do you think we should be focussing on in light of the current threat to the European Rights Act and current political movement? After watching the dismantling of Greek democracy by the EU, ECB and IMF, I believe that we should leave the EU. It is a bankers charter that has enshrined the economics of privatisation and monetarism. The ECHR is a wonderful document and a brilliant and beautiful thing and that needs saving. How we balance the desire to be rid of EU corporate law and keep the ECHR is crucial to us. You are inspirational. On simply a small scale, it was after talking with you that I made the move to join and be active in my local NUJ. Thank you for that. Who has inspired you, both comedically and as an activist? That is very kind of you to say so. I was at college near Wakefield during the miners’ strike and that single event has probably influenced me more than any other political struggle. Constantly inspired by people taking action, be it tenants occupying their estate or the Curzon cinema workers fighting for living wage and trade union recognition. Culturally influenced by: Dave Allen, Woody Allen, Keith Allen, Tony Allen, the Slits, Old Sits, Fluxus, Joseph Bueys, Yoko Ono, the Clash, Crass, John Copper Clarke, World in Action, Bertolt Brecht, Spalding Gray, Carol Churchill, Edward Bond, KLF, Bill Drummond, Wild Billy Childish, Patti Smith, Trevor Griffiths, Theatre Uncut, Robert Wyatt. Your new show ‘Trespass’ addresses ramblers’ rights and right of ways that have been eroded. What other rights that we had 150 years ago do you think should have attention drawn to them? The show looks at cities and public space, of how much land is now owned by the super rich and corporations and how their ownership is changing our access to cities. I tend to think we didn't have as many rights

LEAVE NO MARK

150 years ago as we do now. The death penalty, the ECHR, would be good examples. On first impression we seem to have a problem with how we manage our land in this country, whether it’s selling off communal spaces and losing walkways, or not creating enough social housing in urban areas and out pricing core workers. Do you have any suggestions how to address the social housing problems we’re facing? Yes I do. 1) Massive council house building BUT not just estates – compulsory purchase houses in rich areas and turn them into council houses. It is important we do this to integrate the rich into the world and give them a helping hand into reality. Rent should be at a fair rate rather than market rate, this should in turn decrease the rent paid in the private sector. 2)Land tax, get rid of stamp duty, council tax and business rates replace with Land Tax, each year the owner of the land should pay a percentage of the market value of their land as tax. Houses along the Jubilee line in London went up disproportionately higher than property prices elsewhere in London as a result of the Jubilee line extension, a project funded by public money. The owners of the homes had done nothing to increase the value of the home, instead their homes increased in value as a result of pubic infrastructure works. Land tax takes some of that money back and puts it into other projects. Also land tax would cool overseas investors in London property. 3.) Introduce a massive tax on second homes and buy to lets. And that should just about do it I reckon. Did you come across any suggestions regarding usage of land during your tour collecting ‘manifesto policies’ that piqued your interest in this field at all? Land tax. And a lovely policy from Canterbury that you could only own the land you could run around in one minute. Clearly after your trek along the West Bank you are a dedicated walker. Are you a keen rambler yourself? Not as much as I would like to be, but I do get out and about on the Devon Coastal Path, the South Downs Way and the Peaks. The last walk of over 10 miles was up to Kinder Scout earlier in the year, some friends and I

walked the route of the Kinder Scout mass trespass from 1932. If you could take any six people on a walk along Hadrian’s Wall, who would they be and why would you choose them? Mark E Smith, he looks like he needs the exercise and some fresh air. Patti Smith because if you had the chance to hang out with Patti Smith over 85 odd miles who wouldn't take it? Michael Gove, the longer we can keep him out of the office the better... and it's dark and desolate up there... anything could happen. Simon Armitage, having dissed Hadrian's Wall in his latest book I would quite like to get him to justify it while walking it. My mate and artist Tracey Moberly, because we don't see enough of each other and I reckon she would do for Gove. Mike Harding, rambler, comic and folk legend, reckon he would be just the best company to keep up there. If you could put any piece of literature on the school curriculum, ensuring that a new generation didn’t leave education without having read it, what would it be and why? I would put Andy Miller's Year Of Reading Dangerously, a really lovely book about taking time out to read the books we claim to have read. A book about reading for fun and improvement. What are your plans for the next 12 months, apart from touring? Apart from touring. Er… reading, seeing plays, hanging about with my family, becoming a better cook, walking the South Downs way in one go and claiming the ale and bread any pilgrim and traveller is entitled to at Winchester Cathedral. What was the last thing that made you laugh? Petra from Spymonkey playing Mistress Overdone in Measure for Measure at the Globe theatre. Brilliant. Really funny and dirty. And it only costs £5 to get a ticket at the Globe and stand in the yard. Bloody great. As well as in-house performance opportunities, many students are represented by The Theatre Workshop’s associated agency, and as a result work extensively on stage and screen in some of our favourite TV programmes: Doctor Who, Call the Midwife, Eastenders, Hank Zipzer, Dani’s Castle and The 4 O’Clock Club to name just a few and in West End shows like Matilda and Billy Elliot! Currently, student Abigail Eames is due to star as a lead in the new series of Mr Selfridge, whilst student Brenock continues as Olly in smash hit HBO series Game of Thrones! PAST PRESENT irector of beautiful gay drama The Weekend, Andrew Haigh’s new film 45 Years is an intelligent and moving drama about the fallout of from old news causing a retired husband and wife to rethink their lives together. Like his previous work – including American TV series, Looking – the fabulous devil is in the tiny details. This is a film that will stand up with Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes From A Marriage (1973). Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay play Kate and Geoff Mercer: a childless, retired couple, living a quiet existence in a bleak Norfolk. Kate, a former headteacher with a natural authority and severity, is still widely liked and respected in the local community. Geoff rose through the ranks at a local engineering business, from shopfloor to manager – but it wasn’t a particularly high climb. As an exunion man, he loathed the Tory culture of the 1980s and its return bristles against him now. He is stroppy when drinking and attempting to give up smoking isn’t helping. As the drama begins, Kate and Geoff are organising a party to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary. Quite a large affair is planned since their 40th anniversary was cancelled due to a medical crisis that may or may not have been psychosomatic. Despite the placid poignancy of this elderly couple getting into the marital bed every night in their shapeless, old T-shirts, something feels ominously wrong about the number ‘45’... A few days before the party, Geoff receives an official letter from a small Swiss police force: the body of his ‘wife’ has been found! In 1962 Geoff was on holiday with his girlfriend, Katya, when she fell to her death in an icy glacier. In those more-conservative times it was best for couples to fake a marriage when booking hotel rooms and thus Geoff was listed as her next-of-kin. Kate is astonished at the reveal of this arrangement – was Geoff more deeply in love with Katya than he had been willing to previously let on? Surprisingly, this blast from the past also revitalizes the marriage as they are both reminded of their younger selves – alive with possibility. But in the days that follow, a dreadful truth emerges... The theme of this superbly intelligent and moving film is the terrifying persistence of the past; how the past can appear both more important and more alive than anything in the present, how it can never be repressed without returning and weakening its repressor. 45 Years ponders heartbreakingly on the impossibility of truly knowing another person and just how awful that gulf becomes as the older a couple grows. Rampling and Courtenay are superb and the film will make your heart grow as it breaks. THIS LITTLE PIGGY WENT TO MARKET

An exciting new dining experience for the city Photos: Julia Claxton

’m usually unhappy about reviewing openings of new restaurants because in a sense I will be telling you about an experience that I have had that is unlikely to be offered to you. Parties are what they are and in many ways are very different to a normal restaurant experience. I’m not saying that the food will be any better or worse for that matter, just a different experience. Last week however I attended a rather good party that I want to share with you. For many years I have been a fan of a restaurant called Graze. It was in many ways pioneering, first to venture into tasting menus, small plate dishes and hot when it came, to new food trends like foraging and of course passionate about local produce.

I

Kate loves a joke as much as she loves great food and drink Kate Alleston and partner Neil Mannings were the people behind Graze and I know that when they closed their doors a few weeks back there was concern that they had gone. Fear not, they had merely bitten the bullet and decided it was time to change what they were doing – hence Market. Market is a new concept for them, a more casual but no less exciting approach to food, as we were to discover. Sharing is very much a theme at Market and there are a wide variety of small plates on offer, but if sharing is not for you then there

will be Market Classics, Daily Specials, Sunday Roast and the weekend Big Market Brunch. At the party I was blown away by crunchy polenta mushrooms, artichoke hearts with aioli, leeks with cheese, tempura olives and amazing venison carpaccio. Part of the Market ethic is supporting local producers and we of course ate and drank local with Bedlam Brewery Pilsner, Blackdown gin cocktails and cheese from La Cave a Fromage. Kate is passionate about her

wine list too and I was delighted to see a good representation of sherry, a favourite of mine, on her new list. The inspiration for the food may be sourcing local produce, some of which will be available to purchase for consumption at home, but the dishes are truly global with influences from the mediterranean, the Americas and of course traditional British fare. I cannot wait to go back and see what their exciting new chef can do on a normal night when he is not

under pressure to fill the mouths of an army of party goers fuelled on great wines, beers and spirits. I’m confident that it will be even better. Oh, and for those of us who have enjoyed the joys of the great private dining room at Graze, fear not, it’s still there but is now wittily branded Down Market. Kate loves a joke as much as she loves great food and drink. Good luck to them, I’m sure they will not need it! www.market-restaurantbar.co.uk Market Restaurant, 42 Western Road, Hove, BN3 1JD 01273 823707

hould they bring back Blackadder? Should they bring back Cold Feet? Should they bring back Top Of The Pops? God knows. Don't ask me. But the thing is people DO ask me, they actually want my opinion on stuff like this, and I guess I ought to be flattered. In recent days I've been contacted by 907 different radio stations, or thereabouts, all wanting an expert’s view on TV revivals, and all presumably having found the expert was on holiday and phoned me instead. And what have I told them? I've told them that, despite all the excited speculation about these and other old shows coming back, I personally think it's a ropey idea, that TV programmes have a natural shelf life, that reviving ancient series is a sign that TV bosses have run out of ideas, or at least run out of ideas they're prepared to take a risk on. And do I really mean all that? With my TV critic’s hat on, yes, I really do. Cold Feet and Blackadder,

S

My all-time favourite TV show is Fawlty Towers, but that doesn’t mean I’ve ever wanted it revived

both of which have been the subject of recent revival talk, are great series’ that went out on a high. All you’d do by bringing them back is tarnish the memory. Top Of The Pops, by contrast, was always dire. Just the thought of it returning is enough to bring me out in hives. My all-time favourite TV show is Fawlty Towers, but that doesn’t mean I’ve ever wanted it revived. On the contrary, one of the reasons I still love it is they only ever made 12 episodes. A dozen brilliantly crafted comic gems, perfectly preserved for eternity. That'll do nicely. So, yes, TV revivals are a terrible idea. Absolutely. Definitely. That’s what I tell people when I have my critic’s hat on. But only an idiot wears a hat all day, and when I take mine off, out pops a rather different opinion. Without my critic’s hat on, I tend to think, hey, what the heck, who cares, it’s only telly. If TV bosses would rather revive old ideas than risk new ones, and viewers want to watch those resuscitated shows, and advertisers still want to buy airtime around them, then ultimately where’s the harm? Who knows, we might even end up with another Doctor Who. Either way, it’s hardly a subject worth getting your knickers in a twist about, is it? Life’s too short. By the way, if any sports stations are looking for a fearless new football pundit – one that’s prepared to cast his expert eye over the latest Premier League controversies and go: “Oh, who cares, it’s only a game, anyone got any biscuits..?” – then you know where to find me. WHERE THERE’S A WILL e meet many astonishing local artists with no formal art-school training, including the remarkable John Link. Instead, his background is the theatre – a life-long career in acting, directing and teaching – which now inspires his Shakespeare-themed works. He’s got a solo show coming up at the Rose Theatre, Kingston. But if you can’t make that, grab a copy of Art in No. 2 Othello Brighton 2015 where he features prominently. If you are a fan of the Bard, you will be irresistibly drawn to paintings that – like Shakespeare’s plays – hold a lightness alongside intensity, and weave a curious, unexpected line between them. The subjects are colourful, quirky and fun. But in the expressive faces, the first impression is of a pervading melancholia. A sense of being a bit lost or damaged. Characters burst onto the stage in a new dimension as John engages with them via the medium of paint. No. 4 As You Like It Viewers are met by intense colour, whimsical line, a space that invites us in as if to the set of an imagined drama: a clear sense of design, a look that is hard to fathom, but seems to reel with the weight of what it is to be human. The more structured paintings are like the play’s scenery, with the artist as set designer, imagining spaces to tell the story. Even the forest’s trees allow a sense of airy space. The Forest of Arden is a recurring metaphor: a strangely unlimited scene of magical transformations, where characters escape, disguise and cross-dress, reveal hidden truths, and minds are changed. Much Ado About Love will run from 25 September to 21 November. With thanks to Mary Goody of the Courtauld Institute for Art for her insights in to John’s work. www.artymagazines.com Twitter @brightonsarty No. 6 A Winter’s Tale

fundraiser goes from strength to strength t may seem ages away but October 22nd’s massive fundraiser for local charity Amaze – supporting families with disabled children – is almost upon us. It’s a calendar-placer of a gig, mostly due to the fact that one of the charity’s high profile patrons is Henry Normal, who along with Steve Coogan created the multi awardwinning production company Baby Cow. With TV shows such as Gavin & Stacey, The Mighty Boosh and Uncle in their back catalogue, it’s great that the comedy community has not been backward in coming forward once they heard about this incredible organisation. Sparkling in this year’s line-up is Joe Wilkinson, as seen frequently on 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, headlining the incredible bill. Most frequently seen in Man Down and Taskmaster, Roisin Conaty will be taking to the stage too, alongside The Xtra Factor’s Matt Richardson, and Greg McHugh of Fresh Meat. Finishing off this top-heavy with talent collection is Ed Gamble, whose Peacock & Gamble podcast catapulted him and co-host Ray Peacock into a generation’s funny canon. It’s a star-studded affair and at the time of going to press already one third of the tickets had sold out. Which is why this top tip is coming to you a month in advance. And in such a great comedy-specific venue as Komedia Downstairs it’s bound to be a smashing night. For some laughs this week, head on down to the Ropetackle in Shoreham and see American comic Lewis Schaffer. Having arrived in the UK in 2000, he tells of how this has led to marriage, kids and divorce and how he’s “making the worst out of a bad situation”. The show is called ‘Free Until Famous’ and true to his word it is free, although there is a ticket booking fee of £1.50 and a collection made at the end of the night. Currently holding the record with the longest held residency as the prestigious Leicester Square Theatre, as well as previously being house compere to both the Comedy Cellar and the Boston Comedy Club in New York, Shaffer is not new to this game called ‘comedy’. Benefit from his experience, and then buy a ticket to a benefit for Amaze. Sorted. ack in 2009, Tim Eisenberg was working under a sink, as a plumber, when he got a call to say his band's album Twice Born Men had just got nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. But, few can have been as critically acclaimed, and yet hidden from the mainstream, as Sweet Billy Pilgrim. Formed in 2003, they released their debut album in 2005. We Just Did What Happened and No-One Came, a work that was made in a garden shed with just a laptop and mic. Following Twice Born Men, came the brilliant Crown and Treaty in 2012, but which saw the band nearly split up. “For all the years of hard work and commitment, our progress seemed painfully slow, and we apparently had very little to show for our efforts," says frontman Tim Eisenberg. "And then it dawned on me that I’d be recording songs even if no one bought them; that this wasn’t really something I did, it was something I was; that really, if one person had a profound emotional reaction to something I was part of, then that was an amazing thing, and progress was more than Facebook likes and album sales.

"So, being part of this band became about recognising and overcoming an encroaching cynicism on my part, because it’s cynicism which kills creativity; kills love; kills joy; kills curiosity. Yes, I could moan about the state of the music industry. Yes, I could complain about Spotify not paying me anything. Or, I could make an amazing record with people I love, and play it to people who care (or even play it to people until they care).” Describing their sound as 'thrash pastel', but which in reality is an indescribable mix of folk, rock, electronica, americana and pop, the three original members Eisenberg, Anthony Bishop and Alistair Hamer, have recently been joined by Jana Carpenter, and together on Sweet Billy Pilgrim's fourth album Motorcade Amnesiacs, they have produced another effortlessly classy album, that is rich in intensity and vast in scope. Meanwhile, you can watch a short film for the new single, Slingshot Gin, which features a host of British talent as well as Eisenberg and Carpenter, in exploring fractured relationships. The Polyphonic Spree Tim DeLaughter’s robed happyclapper vocal combo made a welcome return with a performance of their debut album to celebrate its 15th anniversary. Fourteen strong and all clad in white, the sermon began with a blissful ‘Have A Day’ and continued with an often eerie, hippy trippy psychedelic set. The album’s closer ‘Light And Day’ was symphonic and the sense of euphoria was shared between the band and the audience. The rest of the show was comprised of well-chosen golden nuggets of joy from their back catalogue plus a Monkees cover. An evening of great pop on an epic scale. Ian Kelsey

As a fan of the film version of Stephen King’s novella I was both excited and worried as the curtain rose on this staged adaptation. How could they do it? The answer was simply to go back to the book and take the essence of the story. This they did with a great deal of style and skill. Okay, we lost the noise and menace of a jail filled with hundreds of menacing criminals but the company more than made up for that with some very fine performances and an effectively simple staging. Ian Kelsey plays the innocent Dufresne with great reserve, never once losing that cool until he realises that his chance vindication is enmeshed in the corruption of the prison and its warden. Patrick Robinson has the more difficult task of taking on a role so fixed in our minds by Morgan Freeman – but he does it and does it with class. Leigh Jones as Rooster is terrifyingly evil from start to finish and in contrast George Evans as Tommy Williams is movingly effective as the boy murderer. The first half is perhaps a little slow, but clearly to emphasise the slow passage of the years for the inmates, after all the story has to span a massive 20 years. In the second half the pace quickens as the plot unwinds. Of course for the majority of the audience I suspect that we knew

how things would pan out. But for me it did not matter, I was held by the excellent portrayals of naivety, lust, anger and pure evil from the excellent cast. Sadly I felt that the impact of the penultimate scene was lessened by what I felt was an unnecessary beach reunion between Red and Dufresne – but that’s just me. Fans of the book and the film need not worry that this production will not live up to its potential, it certainly does and makes for a fine evening of moving drama.

The Maydays: Confessions!

This production won’t shock or offend like the 1970s blockbuster but it has all the power and energy of the original Rock Opera. Tim Rogers (Judas) gives it a very virile, human kick-start, excellently amplified without any distortion so you can hear every word. This is true for the whole cast, however strong their voices. Veteran performer Glenn Carter (Jesus) begins with a calm gravitas and some finely controlled almost falsetto top notes, then in ‘Gethsemane’ both his acting and his voice become supercharged. The set pieces of Mary Magdalene, Herod, Pilate and the priests maintain the pathos and power. Congress Theatre, Eastbourne, 8 September 2015 Andrew Connal ★★★★

Having seen The Maydays before, I knew we were in for a treat. Only this time, the current cast blew everyone away with a more slick format to their shows and made no pretence about their shows being full of crazy antics, which were based on anonymous audience confessions. Themes ranged from stealing sweets, indirect mafia connections, pumpkin pranks gone wrong and accidentally setting a golf green alight. All these were beautifully brought to life by jokes, songs and loads of interaction with the audience. The Maydays are a troupe to watch out for if you love daring improvisational comedy. Komedia Studio, 8 September 2015 Sascha Cooper ★★★★★

SATURDAY 19 Doctor Who BBC1, 7.40pm He’s back! Looking grumpy and discombobulated but with trusty Clara close on hand to tell him to buck up and get on with it. Just as well as that looks like Missy nearby, who is never up to any good when it comes to the wellbeing of everyone else in general, and the Doctor specifically. Woo! Woo!

The X Factor ITV1, 8pm Everyone really wants a place in Boot Camp. You know this because they promised it to their granny, on their best friend’s death bed, and probably as a defining point in an intergalactic peace treaty that keeps the green men from invading and blowing up the White House. And that’s before they even start singing.

FILM: The Princess Diaries Film4, 4.45pm Perfect Saturday afternoon fodder, and secretly what many small child suspects about the legitimacy of their own ‘selfdeclared’ parents. Yeah, one parental might be alright but clearly the other is actually a distant royal who wants to make you over and give you Julie Andrews as a grandma. Tru dat.

MONDAY 21 Countdown To Life: The Extraordinary Making Of You BBC2, 9pm A lot about us is determined in our middle weeks in the womb. From our facial features, to our own bespoke immune system, if we’re left- or right-handed, and even – some think – our feelings about sex and gender. Michael Mosley finds out more.

Katie Price: In Therapy Channel Five, 10pm Always wanted to be rich and famous? Maybe give it more of a think, as Katie Price, aka Jordan, takes to the therapist’s chair and lays bare what twenty years in the public eye can do to a person’s emotional wellbeing. Dr Claudia Bernat guides her through the process. Anonymity a bit more appealing, perhaps.

Young, Free & Single: Live E4, 10pm More live action from singleton central, as Steve Jones presents the dating show that popped six young singles into a lovely apartment together for the summer. They’re looking for love in East London, but will they turn up with the clichés of beards and cereal bars, or something a little more out of the ordinary?
