here are loads of things in my flat that I only think I need. I realised this when I was reading an article about the Syrian refugees camped in Calais, with a link to local organsiations trying to help at a grassroots level. I dutifully clicked on the Brighton one and was presented with a list of urgently needed items that were being collected and delivered over to France by regular people trying to help other regular people in dire need. I have two sleeping bags and I never go camping. One of them still has my name sewn into it, carefully handstitched by my mother from the first time I went off to lie under canvas for a week in junior school. It has memories of tears, bumpy groundsheets and a massive knot that took over about a third of the back of my head because I didn’t think it was important that I’d forgotten my hairbrush. We had to use scissors. I have an ‘egg’ saucepan my grandmother gave me as something of a surprise present for Christmas one year. I never boil eggs but apparently you need a separate saucepan for the job, otherwise ‘something bad’ happens. I’m not sure what. It’s alright, nothing bad ever happened to it. I have a collection of soaps and toiletries gathered by accident over the years. Things that fill up the bottom of Christmas stockings – yes, my Mum and I still fill a stocking for each other. I’m not too old for it if I make one too. Them’s the rules. Even though I regularly go through my wardrobe in aid of the local charity shops I also found a few bits and pieces there from the online list. I have more things than I thought, and they have less than they need. It’s simple maths. So all of these are going to Calais. And I’m off to the dropping off point now. www.facebook.com/Brighton2Calais

LONDON FASHION WEEK Bethanie Lunn, Style Ambassador for Churchill Square Shopping Centre predicts what we’ll be wearing next season

A

lthough 2016 may seem far away, London Fashion Week is happening this month and the fashion-savvy are already predicting what we’ll be wearing next season. Churchill Square style Ambassador, Bethanie Lunn shares her trend predictions and what to invest in now… “I predict futuristic fashion will be big news and in opposition, a completely natural look that takes us back to basics”, says Beth. “If you look out for clothing in neutral colours and natural fabrics, you’ll be ahead of the fashion pack and, if you like to mix things up and be more daring, choose metallics, contrasting prints and combined textures and fabrics for a nod to the futuristic trend”. Warehouse has some fabulous metallic t-shirts in right now. Office already has a great selection of footwear in contrasting textures and fabrics, from ponyskin and patent sliders to velvettoed leather brogues and colourful textured trainers. Suede will continue in popularity – just make it bright and bold. Miss Selfridge, Monsoon and River Island are all packed full of neutrals which look great when teamed with this season’s denim. “Take a ‘70s style denim skirt or flares and team with a nude tee or lightweight rain mac – they never go out of fashion. Add those experimental shoes to bring it up to date for spring. ‘70s-style fringed suede gilets add an extra layer on crisp spring days too.” Blouses have made a comeback too and are perfect for spring. Invest in any style, from prints to peasant and pussybow and you can’t go wrong. “Topshop and Debenhams have plenty of choice and since they come in sheer fabrics, they’re ideal for warmer months.”

he other day I listened to a very inspiring talk by Lindy Barclay who is the Assistant Director of School Leadership for the Aldridge Foundation. Lindy had 32 years of experience in secondary schools and was a Head of Department, a Deputy Head and latterly the Headteacher of a very successful inner city comprehensive. She helped lead the school to four consecutive ‘outstanding’ Ofsteds. Throughout her professional life she has maintained a deep commitment to staff engagement and well-being. Lindy now works as a school improvement consultant and trainer, running a wide range of courses and working closely with school leaders. She has designed and delivered courses to promote outstanding teaching and learning and has worked with delegates from every education sector and background, and at every stage of their professional lives. She is a regular keynote speaker at education conferences and has written articles and a regular column for the Times Educational Supplement. In one of her TES articles Lindy explained how their school achieved outstanding: “In its rush to fix every problem in education the Government has gone badly wrong in important places. Our work is skewed as it tries to prescribe how we should teach, tells us what should be measured and makes us collect endless data. A noble attempt to put things right is the recently published government document, Every Child Matters, now on every headteacher's desk, and high on the agenda of the Office for Standards in Education. It outlines a range of measures to improve the quality of care for children. “One of its cornerstones is the entirely laudable aspiration that every child should get the chance to fulfil their potential. Words like ‘enjoy’ and ‘achieve’ are used to describe expected outcomes. But I would argue that this should not be a starting point for schools. I would first lay another document on top of it. It would be called Every Teacher Matters, and I would use similar words. “I think I can safely say that I know how we achieved the rating ‘outstanding’. In an educational climate of constant change and uncertainty, we have clung to a single vision that is very simple: we put staff first. We put teachers before targets, before parents, before the holy grail of data gathering, and – here's the controversial bit – before the students themselves. “We have been unfaltering in our view that if you look after staff – if you make them want to come to work in the morning, if they are happy and settled, if they feel valued and part of the organisation – then everything else falls into place. Levels of achievement and standards of behaviour invariably rise in a climate of trust and optimism. A loyal and committed staff is a dream ticket for any school. From this base, everything can grow.” In her recent talk Lindy highlighted that within the recent Department of Education Teachers’ Standards a new word has appeared: love. Teachers are expected to “promote a love of learning and promote children’s intellectual curiosity”. This is exactly what we aim to do at PACA for science and technology; we will be delivering these subjects in a fun, integrated and enjoyable way. Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) is a college offering sixth form, 11-16 years, youth centre, adult learning, community education, sports centre and pre-school. ith the recently expanded Discovery ticket, you can now use the ticket on Go-Coach services as well as Brighton & Hove buses of course, and most other bus companies in the south east. So spend a Saturday at the beautiful Hever Castle by heading up to Tunbridge Wells on the 29 and catching a Go-Coach 234. Standing for over 700 years, Hever Castle is a beautiful testament to the Tudors with a rich and varied history. Whether it's the splendour of the furniture, tapestries and antiques that decorate its internal rooms and halls or the haunting architecture and armour, the diverse aspects of the castle make it an endlessly exciting location to walk through. To really get a sense of the history you can take a stroll through a collection of Tudor portraits or even explore the pictures and memorabilia relating to William Waldorf Astor, who restored and extended the castle in the early 20th century. In addition to the magnificent castle itself, there’s also a huge amount of activities to get up to around 125 acres of castle grounds. Why not visit one of the numerous award-winning gardens? There’s the Italian Garden, a tribute to Roman nature and architecture with its Pompeiian wall and classical statuary and the English Rose Garden, containing over 4000 rose bushes and a giant chess set. If you want to get really medieval there’s archery and jousting on offer. For the intrigued amblers among you, there are three mazes to conquer: the English Yew Maze, the Tower Maze and even a Water Maze. LATEST PEOPLE Local awards scheme honours city’s business talent

he winners of the 10th annual Brighton & Hove Business Awards (BAHBAs) were announced at All Saints Church Hove on Friday 4th September. The big winner on the night was Posh Totty Designs, shortlisted for three and winners of Fastest Growing Business and Creative Industries Award as well as the newly introduced Judges’ Award for the Best Business in Brighton. Also shortlisted for three was Organic Roofs which took home the award for The Best Environmental Industry Company. Other big Brighton names who took home gongs on the night included Brighton Fringe who won The Best Event in the City, Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival for The Best Customer Service and SEA LIFE Brighton which was named Best Place to Visit for the second year running. Individual awards were presented to Andrew Mosely for MD of the Year and Nick Mosley for Outstanding Brightonian, recognising his work in taking the Brighton food offer to an international stage. Mike Gilson, Editor, The Argus and Chair of this year’s panel of judges commented: “The roof was raised at All Saints Church as each accolade was awarded – such is the spirit of camaraderie within the business community of our great city. “The companies, and their leaders, showcased at the 2015 Awards demonstrate that combining passion and business nous with fun and individuality can be a real recipe for success. It is Brighton and Hove’s personality that puts it among the UK’s favourite cities, and that personality is reflected in our business community. “While Brighton is renowned as being a creative tech-hub, our business scene is thriving with ever more successful companies across a range of sectors. From the professional services, to events, environmental industries, visitor attractions, creative industries, start-ups and restaurants, Brighton and Hove has it all. And no doubt, our economy would not be booming without such business talent. “Our winners and finalists all demonstrated financial security, creativity and success; but were also chosen on merit of how well they run their businesses and how well they represent all that is best about the city. “I was impressed, and delighted, to note themes of staff retention, investment in staff training and development, and staff wellbeing initiatives throughout this year’s BAHBA entries. With such commitment to bettering staff and companies that are already excelling, the future is very bright indeed!” This year’s sponsors were Allied Irish Bank, Aspect 8, Boxharry, Brighton and Hove City Cabs, Cardens Accountants, Classic Consulting, Gemini Print, Graves Jenkins, Martin Searle Solicitors, Robinson Low Francis and Yelo Architects. Media sponsors included Title Sussex, Juice 107.2FM and The Argus. The BAHBAs were supported by the Chamber of Commerce, Brighton & Hove City Council, Brilliant Brighton, the Brighton Business Curry Club and B&H Tourism Alliance. They have all come together to create a competition which acknowledges the diversity and uniqueness of Brighton and celebrates those companies, organisations and individuals who really build the Brighton brand.

21ST CENTURY GUITAR MAN Joe Bonamassa speaks to Jeff Hemmings about his tireless work ethic and British blues influences

O

ver the years Joe B and his rock-solid team has built a veritable cottage industry, defying and flying in the face of the orthodox strictures of the music and record industry. From appearing concurrently on stage and on television at age 12 with BB King, it's been all about the blues for Bonamassa, although ironically it was his love of the British blues revival that really did it for him. "Yeah, the British blues revival is a big refection on what I do," says Joe from New York, where he is preparing to appear on The Tonight Show, a show itself steeped in history (it is the longest running 'talk show' in the world, having started in 1954). "There's the two Irishmen in my life: Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore. Cream, the Jeff Beck Group, one of my first influences, the group he had with Rod Stewart… I enjoy that type of blues and that was my gateway. I didn't listen to BB KIng and other blues acts till later, to be honest with you." Famously, those gigs with BB King was the big kick-start for Bonamassa, performances that led to much knocking on the door of his parents house, managers and lawyers alike all looking to sign up this child prodigy… "I'm not sure if he'd [BB King] seen the likes of me before," says Joe, "this kid with ADD running around the stage with a telecaster. I really admire that man for his commitment to keeping the music going, and his generosity. Nobody seemed to have a bad word to say about him. He defines the genre of music, he is the blues." Now, along with the likes of Robert Cray, Joe Bonamassa has become the torchbearer for the 21st century blues, helping to revive what was a badly flagging genre, with the help of the British… "There wasn't much of a British blues scene happening in 2004, when I first came over. There was a lot of guys playing Strats in the Stevie Ray Vaughan fashion. I found myself on an island, but people in the UK were saying

Watch Latest Entertainment on

'that's kinda cool'. The UK was one of the first places where I started to get some traction, almost immediately, upon arrival. “I'm very grateful for the British community embracing me. Even when I come to my home country I'm looked upon as an international artist, a British artist. I'm an honorary Brit! That gig at the Royal Albert Hall, 2009 (fulfilling a childhood dream, and which saw one of his heroes, Eric Clapton, join him in stage), people thought I was British… I liked the British blues because it was a little harder, had a little more high energy. The thing about the British blues

There's the two Irishmen in my life: Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore revival was that they were looking backwards to the past to look forward to the future. That's where you got Led Zeppelin, and stuff like that. "But kids are now making it their own, and finding an audience of younger

• LATEST 7 9

www.thelatest.co.uk •

kids. That is the only way a genre of music can survive; you find a younger generation of kids who are willing to invest in it and follow it. That's what Clapton and those guys did; they amped it up and made it rock'n'roll; Jimmy Page, taking Howlin' Wolf songs and making it heavy metal. Blues will never die if you take that attitude." Almost from the beginning, Bonamassa and his team decided to build a career as an independent artist, to the point now where Bonamassa is selling out theatres and arenas around the world, and releasing new records on a regular basis. In fact he's released 11 studio albums since 2000, three collaborative albums (including two with Beth Hart), and is just about to release his 13th live album, Radio City Music Hall, a recording made at the esteemed New York theatre of the same name, earlier this year. "I went there once as a kid, to see Liza Minnelli – she was doing a run of 20 shows or something. We sat right behind Madonna… It was great, it's a beautiful theatre, 5000 seater. The album is basically like what the live show was for the last year," says Joe. "There's this thing where people release albums every five years. It's so antiquated, and quite frankly wrong, that people end up thinking you should only release every three to five years. I hark back to the old school ways; it's more fun to release new products, challenge yourself, and try and maintain the quality." And already there's more in the pipeline… "I just did a studio album that won't be out till next year. I worked hard on it and it took me about a month to write, and seven or eight days to record. It doesn't take that long, two or three tracks a day. I'm not one of those artists who will move mics around; we're not sound experimenters. I'm not wiling to throw away a great performance for some esoteric sound." Brighton Centre, Fri 30 Oct & Sat 31 Oct (sold out), 6.30pm, tickets from £35

ANDREW BULLOCK FROM CHELSEA TO LA

Follow me: @andrewjbullock

S

ince writing last I have been off executing my plans to infiltrate the cast of Made In Chelsea, with some notable success. But I shan't start name dropping *cough* Binky's Mum *cough*.

The summer is over. Something’s in the air. It’s doom. The doom of summer’s end. The doom of a trip to America that has left us alone with the casualties of love. MIC have been in LA. The first three minutes of the first episode had the likes of Jamie and Stephanie continually screaming phrases along the lines of: “We’re in LA”, “Oh my god, I hope LA is ready for you guys” and “I can’t believe you guys are in LA” just to make sure that the audience hadn't missed a trick. This season was better than last summer's MIC: NYC because they shipped less of the London cast over and shoved less American tottie down our gullets. Last year there were so many English cast members packed off to the Big Apple that poor old Fran and Cheska were sent home early on the earliest freight flight – probably landing at somewhere like Exeter airport and made to hitch-hike home. Don't get me wrong – I still loved MIC: NYC with the passion of a thousand fires (who can forget the amazing Jules and his polyamorous attempts on Rosie?) but there was almost too much going on. This year, half the amount of cast were sent over and the only Americans that stuck around were Olivia (who was all about yoga and sea shells and asked JP to play with her in a waterfall) and Naz (who became less annoying with each step she took toward heartbreak). What did we learn from MIC: LA? Lucy and James are sickeningly happy: he flew over to see her, leaving Digby the dog to fend for itself, and they had a lovely time. That boy's teeth just get sharper and that girl's dry wit just gets... sharper! Jamie is still ridiculous – JP even said the phrase "are you ridiculous?" to him whilst dressed like a Denver Bronco. He starts the trip being all "I'm single", meets Naz on a staged hike through the Californian canyons, gets invited to her pool party despite the fact that she has only just met him and he could be a murderer, dates her, allows Jess to insert her flirtatious claws into his white hair and declares that he wants a relationship with Jess. But she makes him talk to the hand. Has he learnt his lesson? Toff: is looking better than ever, golden and tanned like Malibu Barbie in her pink 4X4. Josh is having a mid-life crisis : he dumps Steph like toxic waste, claiming that when they are a couple he is unable to look for a job on a computer. The will they/won't they between Binky and JP: this is currently a big "won't they", despite having a night of "will they" together in a bed. Season 10 is on the horizon and the only thing that really matters is that Ollie has come back to the fold. Locke, not Proudlock. Proudlock's probably off designing a T-shirt with a pattern of concentric circles on it. Andrew Bullock is a producer, presener and writer. You can read more at www.drewjbullock.wordpress.com

GRUMPY GRANDMA s much as I love film, I have recently discovered a new passion in the cinematic television series – those series’ that manage to pull in the big stars and spend the big bucks on sets, locations and great writers. These series’ play well in our ‘nobody watches TV on TV any more’ culture, with the boxset as king and Netflix as high emperor. Those of you who have yet to discover Grace and Frankie, an American comedy series, released on Netflix in May this year, are missing out on a great one. Rivals Grace, an up-tight retired cosmetics mogul, and Frankie, a hippie art teacher, are brought together after years of animosity when their husbands announce they are leaving them… for each other. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are fabulous in the lead roles with Fonda’s Grace slowly loosening up and Tomlin’s Frankie meandering towards growing up as they are forced to support each other through this difficult time. I have always enjoyed Tomlin in films but had never sought her out as I do post-Grace and Frankie. Tomlin is also a lesbian but until her most recent film, Grandma, has never played an out woman on screen. Grandma, is a lament for figures of the gay-rights and feminist eras who still don’t quite fit in with wider society, even in liberal places like California. Protagonist, Elle Reid (Tomlin), is abrasive and sour; a deeply unhappy poet whose words are read by no one anymore. She is in mourning, having recently lost her partner of three decades who, it’s accepted, was the ‘nice one’ of the pair. This, according to Elle, is why she has lost contact with family and friends. But the reality is that she ‘makes a scene’ wherever she goes and doesn’t really care about other people’s feelings. In the opening scene she casts her younger lover of four months out of her life, jeering that the woman was just a “footnote”. “That’s a horrible thing to say”, gasps the young woman. “Well, I’m a horrible person”, Elle replies. And yet… when her teenage granddaughter, Sage, comes to her needing money for an abortion Elle takes it upon herself to come up with the cash. Yet, despite the melancholy and sense of loss, Grandma is actually loaded with laugh lines! This isn’t exactly strange coming from the director of American Pie and Little Fockers but it doesn’t always work. The comedy is best when bleak and dry, something Tomlin excels at. It is a modest film with naturalistic rhythms, excellent at portraying how a warm and homely place can suddenly turn cold when we do or say the wrong thing. Watching Tomlin charge into scenes as Elle, rattling off insults with killer timing is fabulous but the film is very predictable. We have seen this storyline hundreds of times before: old, angry person spends time with young person, realises life isn’t so bad. It is at least a heartfelt story, with Elle living life her own way and marching to her own tune until the credits. Grandma’s UK premier will be at the London Film Festival on 8th October ready for a nationwide release on the 11th December. Delighting in dim sum at Gars

G

rowing up in the north my experience of good Chinese food was pretty limited – if indeed non-existent. I arrived in London and within days my new friend Kwok had opened up a treasure chest of fabulous oriental delights. Both his parents worked in Soho, not as strippers or gangland members, no, as chefs. We would visit and Kwok would order. In those days I had no idea what I was eating and I didn’t care. I’m not squeamish when it comes to offal and the like and we ate plenty of that I’m sure. It was in Soho that I was introduced to dim sum. Dim sum goes back further than the tapas and small plate crazes of the last thirty or forty years in this country but is a similar way of dining.

Dim sum goes back further than the tapas and small plate crazes of the last thirty or forty years Back in my earlier years dim sum was served in the bigger west end restaurants from heated trolleys wheeled between the tables, it was not only delicious, but it was fun and it was cheap. I grew to love the many kinds of dumplings, the curried squid and whelks and the steamed buns full of char sui pork. I was crazy for the sticky rice packed into lotus leaves and studded with wind dried sausage and dried mushroom. Sadly many of those places have

gone. Here in Brighton there have been few places to eat dim sun for the last few years – but not any more. Gars has to be my top place to eat Chinese food in town and now they have a great new dim sum menu served from lunch to the early evening. There are sadly no trollies, the staircase would put paid to that, but the menu has so many of my old favorites that I felt compelled to drag Mr L along on a Sunday afternoon for a bit of a feast. And how we feasted!

Gars have long been recognised as a place where traditional Chinese dishes have been elevated to fine dining dishes – order the beef carpaccio and you will see what I mean. Their dim sum are pretty traditional in flavour and content – but with a new sense of style, presentation is beautiful and the service is, as one might expect, second to none. Mr L is always happy for me to take charge of ordering in oriental restaurants and I was like a kiddy in a

sweet shop. I chose ten dishes and a larger dish of tempura style scallops from a list of daily specials. The dumplings were superb, razor clams exceptional, buns sweet and savoury, so good we ordered a second portion. The curry squid was tender and the spice balanced so well – and the sticky rice, well that too we order second helpings of. Gars never fails to please me and within days I was back for a superb dinner. Gars, 19 Prince Albert St, Brighton BN1 1HF, 01273 321321 www.gars.co.uk

ANDREW KAY GUILTY TREASURES A Sunday drive to Farley Farm

SPONSORED BY

Bardsley’s Fish & Chips

I

have lived in Brighton for about thirty years now. That’s longer than I have lived anywhere else – ever. I left Lancashire when I was 18 (I say Lancashire but it was officially Merseyside by that point, a fact that some of us bitterly resented), never to return except for an occasional visit. I moved to London to study and then to work and finally came here when I had tired of the city and wanted to have a different kind of home life. I many ways Brighton has given me that and I have embraced the city and the county. Unlike many real locals I have visited the Royal Pavilion on many occasions, walked on the downs, traveled to Petworth and Charleston, visited the Towner and so on… On Sunday though Mr C and Dr C asked me if I was free to join them in seeing an exhibition by local photographer Tony Tree. I was free and accepted their kind offer and off we set to Farley Farm. The exhibition was very good indeed, Tony Trees images are a stunning record of past events, social history, wars, fashion and entertainment. He calls himself a jobbing photographer, well Tony, you do a very fine job! Here though I hang my head in shame and guilt, Farley Farm, I knew nothing of it. This is crazy because deep in my memory I must have some past knowledge because this was the home of Roland Penrose, surrealist and art historian and his wife Lee Miller. Of course I knew of both of them, I did go to art school so it would be unlikely that I had not as they were such key players in the world of 20th century arts. We decided to take the tour of the farmhouse and here the excellent guide Kate filled in the rest. It is the most fascinating place with none of the feel of a gallery and very much the feel of a home still lived in, and indeed the home still belongs to the family although now it is used to house the offices and archives and photo labs of the trust. They had a housekeeper who was loathe to throw anything away, a gift for anyone creating an exhibit like this so for the most part the house is very much as they lived in it, right down to the kitchen. There Lee Miller would cook with a passion and to prove it Kate pointed out that there were devices that we would never think existed or that one

Lee Miller’s eye for composition is exquisite, seeing beyond the ordinary to create the extraordinary might need. Pop into my kitchen Kate and I think I might share a passion with Lee Miller. Penrose had of course collected a massive number of great works by important artists and although some remain many are now loaned to major art institutions around the world. The place is sprinkled through with treasures, not least by Picasso, a lifetime friend of the family and visitor to the farm. There is, we heard, a visitors book that reads like a who’s who of twentieth century art, but it is too fragile to be on display sadly. The dining room is hung with a large collection of Roland Penrose paintings and many illuminate his relationships with his first wife and later with Lee Miller who he met in Paris. Lee Miller’s iconic images are

Self Portrait with headband, New York Studio, New York, USA 1932’ by Lee Miller (12-1-C) Sitting Room, Farley Farm House, Chiddingly, Sussex, England by Tony Tree

everywhere to be seen, from her time in New York where she was a top model through her years with Man Ray and most poignantly to her time as a war correspondent and photographer. A glass case contains many of her trophies, knuckle dusters, camera and even writing paper filched from Adolf Hitler’s desk. In Hitler’s apartment, after three weeks on the road in uniform, with no washing facilities, she took a bath, in Hitler’s bath! Her friend, a young Jewish photographer did the same and they took pictures of each other doing so – the same day that Hitler and Eva Braun took their own lives! What in one glance might seem like a pair of funny images take on a massive significance. Roland Penrose never achieved the same prominence as an artist as his many friends but he did achieve fame and acclaim as an organiser of great exhibitions. Lee Miller’s work is as poignant as ever, her war photographs have a great beauty despite the often sad or horrific content of the images. Her eye for composition is exquisite, seeing beyond the ordinary to create the extraordinary. I felt inspired by the whole experience, the paintings, photographs, artifacts and the kitchen in which they say Miller found a new way to calm her restless mind. I also felt ashamed that this was my first visit to this amazing piece of art and social history – only a stone’s throw from my home. I urge you not to take as long as I did in discovering this amazing gem. www.farleyfarmhouse.co.uk Farley Farm House, Gallery & Garden is open to visitors every Sunday until the end of October 2015. To coincide with Chiddingly Festival and Artists Open Studios they will be open to visitors for two full weekends on Saturday 26 & Sunday 27 September 2015, Saturday 3 & Sunday 4 October 2015. House Tour & Garden entry 2015 is £9.50 per person. Age suitability 12 yrs+.

MIKE WARD AT LARGE MARKY MIKE

arts

BRIGHTON’S ARTY Alison Krog

Follow me: @mikewardontv

have decided to change my name. Just the "Mike" bit, I mean. Honestly, I may as well, seeing as everyone else seems determined to do it for me. From now on, I shall go by the name of MARK Ward – the one which, for reasons that I genuinely cannot fathom, so many people insist on calling me in any case. This way, I figure, I won't get quite so blinking annoyed about it. Seriously, you won't believe how often I send an email – and I send a LOT of emails – with my name, Mike Ward, clear as daylight, spelt out in the signature at the bottom, as well as in the actual email address I'm sending it from, of course – only for the blithering numpty who's received it to come back with "Hi Mark" or "Thanks Mark" or "I'm a total cretin who can't bloody read, Mark". It happens – and I'm not making this up – a good half-dozen times a week. And, as you're probably starting to twig, it drives me absolutely NUTS. Only a couple of weeks ago, my wife and I went out for a meal on our anniversary, turned up at the restaurant where I'd booked our table by email, and was told, sorry, they didn't have a reservation in the name of Mike Ward. You don't need me to explain the reason why. And although it got sorted in the end, the fact that I'd had to slap the dimwit owner around his stupid face several times with a wet mackerel (I always carry one for precisely such purposes) before he acknowledged his error meant the evening got off to a less than ideal start. I'd actually like to know if it's just me. Or are there any other Mikes out there who suffer the same problem? Or Marks who get called Mike? Do please get in touch if that's the case. It would make me feel at least a tiny bit better. For now, I can only assume that my emails trigger some kind of dyslexia in their recipients – the A and the R in my surname somehow get transposed, if that's the word, it probably isn't, and end up in my first name. If so, the I and E from my first name should then take the place these letters have vacated in my surname. Which I think makes me Mark Wide. That's not great, is it? So, yes, the only way I can end this nightmare, I've decided, is to change my name for real. But then you know what'll happen, don't you? These idiots will carry on getting it wrong – only now it'll be the other way round. Just you mike my words. Mike Ward is the TV Critic of the Daily Star and the TV Editor of the Daily Express Saturday magazine. Hear him every Monday afternoon with Guy Lloyd on Brighton’s Juice 107.2

MOVING PICTURES ow long does it take to create a work of art? About as long as that proverbial piece of string it seems. We meet artists whose paintings are the result of years of painstaking layering and scraping back; then applying more paint – or whatever media they are working with – and reimagining and re-inventing until they are happy with the final result. Then at the other end of the spectrum is the amazingly talented Jan Irvine, who is perhaps best known for her ‘live drawings’. Jan has the uncanny ability to capture the energy and beauty of the body in motion. Her lines are fluid, strong and confident. And yet on occasion, when a likeness is required, they can take on great sensitivity. She feels she is best working at speed – too much time and she just might lose something of the magic. (However, I should point out that she also paints brilliant oil portraiture and creates vibrant and much coveted

Jan has the uncanny ability to capture the energy and beauty of the body in motion collages.) Most recently Jan has travelled to Havana to find inspiration from the local dance scene. Here’s a tantalising glimpse. Let’s hope she finds a suitable venue to exhibit in so we can all see more. Don’t miss: if you’re mooching around the North Laine, be sure to make a diversion up North Road to 35 North Contemporary Fine Art. This bright and welcoming little artspace has just re-opened for the autumn season with an exhibition by Brightonbased photographer Mark Nelson. Mark’s collection of moody and evocative images is drawn from his 25 years of travelling across the USA. Stunning stuff. Until 10 October. www.artymagazines.com Twitter @brightonsarty

Blackeyed Theatre, in association with South Hill Park, presents the world premiere of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Adapted by Stephen Sharkey. Immersing you in the decadence of America’s ‘Jazz Age’, The Great Gatsby is brought to life in this sizzling new stage adaptation from nationally acclaimed Blackeyed Theatre. Recreating the sights, sounds and feel of America’s ‘Roaring Twenties’ as seen through the eyes of Nick Carraway, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece is a brilliant evocation of a society obsessed with wealth and status. You’re local to Brighton? I was born and brought up in Uckfield, then I moved to Brighton. There's not much going on there (Uckfield) musically, but it is a nice little town. I moved to Brighton when I was about 23, and lived there for six or seven years, before I moved to London last year. But we're going back to Sussex soon. I can't do London anymore, it gets me down. I start becoming rude to people without realising it. Desensitised. I don't like what it does to me. So, you like Brighton? There is a sense of freedom you get in Brighton that you don't get anywhere else. Maybe Bristol. It's a similar sort of place but without the seaside. There's just something about Brighton that draws people. It was in Brighton that you really became immersed in music? I used to go Slip Jam:B (a long running monthly hip hop jam

night) and that's where we formed Rum Committee, a hip hop collective, in 2009. That's when I started performing. Your parents record collections were a major factor in you getting into music… Both my Mum and Dad had records, vinyl records, and it was like what records looked cool, I'll play that. And then I'd get told off, cause I might scratch them… JJ Cale was big one for me and so was John Lee Hooker's Crawling King Snakes. Where did the Rag'n'Bone Man name come from? I got it from Steptoe and Son. I thought it was cool name. It was well before my time, and my Granddad used to watch it when I was little. It's still really funny. What were you doing before music? I used to work as a carer, but I haven't done that for a year and a half. Music is now full-time. But, there is always a back up plan! Concorde 2, Tues 29 Sept, 7pm, £10 September, 7.30pm, free

Brighton Alternative Jazz Festival, The Old Market, 11-12 September 2015, Joe Fuller ★★★★★ A Night At The Opera

Mette Rasmussen

The inaugural festiva showcased deep jazz from around the world with a specific focus on female musicians. Woven Entity opened, a fun general clatter quartet featuring maracas, backing tracks, triangles, dog toys and much more, alongside a pure, warm saxophone tone from Julie Kjaer. The Sarah Gail Brand sextet were a more bombastic and looser entity with her trombone compositions a melodic blast and subtle, moving, elegant piano from Liam Noble. Friday night headliners Kiermyer-Birchall Transcension produced some sublime old school spiritual jazz with rich saxophone from work Birchall and expansive new compositions. Mette Rasmussen's plethora of different playing techniques (including removing the reed at one point) built to a fantastic loud crescendo, whereas Steve Noble's intriguing all-over-theplace drumming provided the most ethereal moment of the festival when he beautifully underpinned muted sax with inner cymbal playing. The famous double bassist William Parker and drummer Hamid Drake from New York headlined Saturday night, joined by big fan saxophonist John Dikeman. There was a truly tangible chemistry and pure musicality about Parker and Drake, with magisterial shuffling drumming, and both providing the standout

solos of the weekend. The more melodic, accessible parts of the festival were perfect to grab the attention of the uninitiated while the high quality of musicianship got jazz veterans excited too. BAJF was a resounding success and a rare chance to see a diverse range of striking, beguiling, exceptional talent; all for a cheap price too.

Music Theatre 2000 presented an evening at the atmospheric Emporium, featuring solos, duets and other selections from popular operas. Six singers were accompanied by pianist and musical director Simon Gray, and some of the opening pieces were the most moving. A baritone/tenor duet from Bizet’s ‘The Pearlfishers’ featured delicate harmonies and a soaring finale. Soprano Karen Orchin’s aria from Puccini’s ‘La Rondine’ was beautiful, clear and pleasantly loud, while Gavin Sayers’ tenor aria from Verdi’s ‘A Masked Ball’ was rich and robust. The generous programme also included Mozart, Bellini and Gounod, resulting in a fun, informal and excellent value opportunity to hear classic opera in a relaxed setting. Emporium, 13 September 2015 Joe Fuller ★★★★

Bedroom Farce

Brighton Little Theatre do a grand job in bringing Alan Ayckbourn’s clever and sophisticated 70s comedy about marital disharmony amongst the middle class to shimmering life. The casting is perfect. The actors display an abundance of intelligence and insight in their beautifully judged performances (a prerequisite with Ayckbourn), deftly handling both the farcical and tragic elements of the play, which helps divert our attention from the occasional structural creak and crack. It may be farce; it may be absurd but the play still has to function within its own logical framework. The ending rather fizzles out, but this is Ayckbourn’s, and not the production’s fault – and it in no way spoils what is a darned good night out at the theatre. Brighton Little Theatre, 12 September 2015 Gary Mepsted ★★★★

[data]storm is the second offering from creative computer science education organisation ‘readysaltedcode’. I felt this fusion of formal ballet and concepts from computer science and internet theory was less of a synthesis and more of a grafting. While the visuals were very impressive (I was completely captivated by two stick figure graphics dancing together) the seam between the two worlds meeting was a jagged one. The lighting, costume and score were exceptionally well executed, although more thought needs to be put into the spaces between the vignettes so there is more continuity and cohesion; abruptly ended music is jarring!
