love curiosity. It’s one of the first things we learn to express. What’s that? Why is this like this? Why isn’t it like that? What does that taste of? Why did you let me taste that? It takes you out the front door and into the wide world adventureland that offers up the new experiences and wonders that spark the imagination and tickle the brain. My latest foray into the new took me to a taster treat of opera at the Emporium, served up with context, cheek and a lovely Thai curry. I was captivated. And the night before I was sharing the thrill of what exactly Steampunk death metal might actually sound like and planning to get tickets asap. It’s not just eclectic tastes, as that would imply a consistency and an education in the wonders I find. It’s more of a playground with loads to do, and a glee at discovering a new corner of it I had hitherto been unaware of. I’ve tried mountain-boarding, ballroom dancing, crochet... I even had a go at making ‘scotch’ – you know, from scotch eggs – when I first left home without the first clue as to what went into it. I was shiftily told by my flatmate that I had invented savoury lardy-cake. Not my intention, but an adventure nonetheless. I do hang onto some things that have caught my fancy over the years. Becoming a comedy geek doesn’t happen overnight, and nor does a healthy trade in homemade banana bread (I don’t actually sell it but it does serve for birthdays, dinners and once even a haircut). But I discovered my love of these through my worldly meanderings. It’s good to explore. Like trying avocado again when you’re a bit older – tastes change and develop, although I did have to be pressed into trying that one. And Brighton is the land of plenty when it comes to adventures. Dr Caroline Oprandi Keeping you up to date with science and technology at PACA e are off to a flying start at PACA STEM centre. All of the KS3 pupils are busy designing the bodywork for the Greenpower car. It will then be decided via a competition which team will have their model design selected for the real thing. Greenpower is an initiative where school children from all over the country get to design, build and race an electric powered race car. Last year the International Final was held at Goodwood. The Greenpower car arrives as a kit and various school children during PACA’s STEM afterschool club have been constructing the backbones of the car. We are very lucky that Ricardo engineering have offered their support to this project. Also, I recently met with the Dean of the College of Life, Health and Physical Sciences from the University of Brighton, Professor Andrew Lloyd. He had heard all about the fantastic opportunities that we are giving the pupils at Portslade and has kindly offered his support to PACA’s STEM centre. Not one to miss an opportunity, I quickly asked Andrew if we could use their 3D printers to print out the winning Greenpower car design. University of Brighton have an excellent engineering department and Andrew has agreed that we can also use their wind tunnel in order to assess the final aerodynamics of the design. What better way is there to teach kids aerodynamics, forces and speed; inspiring both boys and girls to take an interest in physics and engineering? The pupils will also get the opportunity to test drive the car in the playground and work out the speed at which they are travelling (it won’t be too fast though, just in case any worried parents are reading this!) This project isn’t just about the final car and entering the International Finals. Although there is plenty of science within this project, the children are also thinking creatively, making models out of clay and designing presentation for the final Dragon’s Den style competition. They are developing team working skills, problem solving skills and project management skills. There is an excited hum coming from the classrooms and plenty of smiles on pupil’s faces and above all… the science teachers too! Furthermore, the children are busy writing sponsorship letters to potential sponsors, so if you fancy having your name on the winning car (there will be plenty of press involved in the International Race Final) then let us know here at Portslade Aldridge Community Academy. Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) is a college offering sixth form, 11-16 years, youth centre, adult learning, community education, sports centre and pre-school. Today, we’re highlighting one of the most beautiful manor houses still standing in England, Penshurst Place. Built in 1341, Penshurst Place has been described as “the grandest and most perfectly preserved example of a fortified manor house in all England”. Experience the charm and majesty of the manor through a tour of 10 rooms open to the public including the impressive medieval Baron’s Hall. After you’ve seen the art and architecture inside, why not explore the vibrant, beautiful gardens and grounds? The estate is one of the largest privately owned in the South East of England with 2,500 acres of parkland, woodland and farmland. There’s a woodland trail to discover key areas of interest and the wonderful wildlife of the countryside as well as an adventure playground for the kids. estival Of The Spoken Nerd comprises of stand-up mathematician Matt Parker (Discovery Channel You Have Been Warned), experiments maestro Steve Mould (ITV1 I Never Knew That About Britain) and geek songstress Helen Arney (BBC2 Coast). So with that in mind, and a tour just kicking off, what do these diverse brainiacs really think about ‘home’? Where do you live now? HELEN: South East London. STEVE: South evenmore-Easterly London. MATT: Godalming in Surrey – the site of the first publicly available electrical supply! It went bankrupt a few years after it started, but don’t worry, we got electricity again a few years ago... And where did you grow up? STEVE: A small village in Gateshead called Rolands Gill. HELEN: A small village in Buckinghamshire called Pitstone. MATT: A small village in Australia called Perth. What were the best bits of growing up there? MATT: In Perth it’s very isolated so there’s a spirit of “if you want to do something, do it yourself”, which is a good attitude for getting into stand-up. STEVE: There’s a strong community vibe to growing up in a village. HELEN: Yes, definitely that, plus off-licences that don’t ask too many questions about your age and a 45-minute train to London. What were the worst bits about growing up there? HELEN: One bus a day, and even if you caught it, it wasn’t going anywhere that you wanted to go.

HELEN: With lots of time and space to play, I got really into doing “science experiments” in our back garden. Now I get to do them on stage. STEVE: I was part of an amateur dramatics group which was very supportive. Now I get to play the part of myself on stage. MATT: I took up maths in school to make the bullying seem less arbitrary. Now I get to do maths on stage. Hasn’t stopped they bullying though. Where do you feel you truly come from originally? MATT: The coalescing proto-plantary disc. HELEN: In all likelihood, as current theories go, I’m going to say the oceans. STEVE: Shotley Bridge Hospital. ANDREW BULLOCK EX ON THE PREACH

Follow me: @andrewjbullock

hen did car crash TV become an actual genre of television? Like, a proper sub-category that TV execs sit around a conference table and discuss as a remit to actually fill? It was originally an accidental product of bad programming. If Anthea Turner ballsed up the lottery numbers live on air, that was car crash TV. If a documentary followed a group of alcoholic tramps, that was car crash TV. But the people making it actually meant for it to be good. But producers now go out to make car crash TV. There should literally be a section of the Sky+ planner for it – Sports, Cookery, Car Crash. What's more, members of the public actually go on it for instant recognition, even if the recognition is for doing something horrific. Case in point: MTV's Ex on the Beach. I didn't watch seasons 1 or 2, but inadvertently stumbled across episode 2 of season 3 the other day when I was folding my pants (they were laundered, it's fine). Now, I'm not easily shocked, but 10 minutes in I was standing with my boxer-briefs in midfold, mouth agape with morbid curiosity. Five minutes later the laundry had been abandoned and I was perched on the coffee table, nose practically pressed up against the screen (and subsequently Jordan from the Magaluf Weekender's crotch). Next thing I know I've paused it, put the kettle on, made a pot of lapsang souchong and have got my feet up, loving it. And when it finished, I whacked it straight onto series link. It's amazing viewing. The only thing you have to do is compromise your humanity when you watch it, that's all. Basically, it's a group of people who didn't make it past casting week for TOWIE or Big Brother, who are dumped into a villa in Mexico and told that to get air time they need to start mounting one another. Then about four other people come in, all of whom did make it past casting week for TOWIE or Big Brother, and all of the original people start trying to mount them instead. Then all their exes emerge from the sea, having presumably swum from St Ives. This year we have Kirk Norcross who has used the opportunity to demonstrate to the nation that he is at least 19% psychotic. Walls kicked, bollards punched, lamps swept from tables as if he were a disgruntled wife stumbling across his husband and a mistress eating at The Fat Duck – and ultimately, he went home (because the producers were sick of dealing with that s**t). Meanwhile, we have the token import from Geordie Shore saying "Oi Oi" or whatever they say, and not overly convincing me that she isn't actually a man. In a way, this lot have achieved ‘success’ already, so they can do what they like. It's the normal common people that baffle me. Now, I'm no saint – I've had my fair share of drunken, argumentative, hormone-fuelled drama in my time; but I wouldn't specifically apply to a TV show to demonstrate it to the nation (I save that kind of behavior for my nearest and dearest). Not on Ex on the Beach though. Everyone's mugging everyone off, the boys are treating the fragile girls like crap, and the loud girls are proving that however pretty you think you are, a mouth like a foghorn makes men think you're a hindrance. Someone at MTV commissioned this show to fill their network's car crash TV quota. And while the genre irritates me – given that a monkey could produce it – I thank the Lord for that commissioner for distracting me from my pants folding. Andrew Bullock is a producer, presenter and writer. You can read more at www.drewjbullock.wordpress.com

DIGITAL NATION ON LATEST TV

"Did you see Digital Nation on TV last night, it was fantastic." "Yes! No wonder the BBC have commissioned it for a year or two." "It's like a modern day Nationwide, or like a fast-moving, artistic version of the One Show." igital Nation is a programme on Latest TV which features the best of Local TV from across the UK. It includes heartwarming and compelling stories you may not normally see. Last week Digital Nation featured the very fine surgery undertaken by Chief Veterinary Surgeon Dr Alan Humphreys from Liverpool, who is seen operating on the eye of an 8g musk turtle. Plus from Glasgow, the story of Charlie Flynn, the young Commonwealth Gold Medallist boxer, who juggled his job as a postman with winning the Gold Medal last year. The programme covers so many different local faces and stories, from large outdoor events such as Pride featuring Fatboy Slim, to charity events, nature features, and celebrities returning to their hometown to sneak in a local gig. You can catch this episode on BBC Online at www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p033 d117 or on Latest TV’s youtube channel The Latest TV.

Digital Nation captures the passion of living in the UK with the same spirit as Danny Boyle enthralled the nation with the Olympics opening ceremony. The project is an ongoing collaboration with the BBC and is the first of a network-wide programme and a great model for Local TV and the BBC working together. Digital Nation is produced by Angi Mariani from Latest TV in Brighton and Tim Bryn Smith and Craig Chettle from Notts TV with executive producers, Audrey Green Oakes and Linda Bell from the BBC. All 20 Local TV channels currently on air across the UK are featured in the weekly show. Many of the channels are in their first year of broadcast and growing into their second year. The show highlights the fact that local democracy has had a huge boost across the UK with Local TV broadcasting local MPs and community leaders; showing local faces on TV screens across the country and promoting the work of local content creators including feature films. IN FRONT OF THE SCREENS AND BEHIND THE SCENES AT LATEST TV atest TV has been on air for just over a year and we asked a few of the people behind the scenes, and one or two who grace our screens what it is really like...

L

Tim Ridgway, Head of News Being involved in Latest TV has been more challenging than I ever imagined. But it's also more fun than I imagined. Every day I work with some really creative and imaginative people who have made local television in Brighton better than many thought it could be. Currently we are producing three news bulletins a day as well as a two hour live show from 3pm to 5pm on weekdays. That's in addition to a devoted show about the Albion and five current affairs shows a week. It's tough. And despite losing a few hairs on the way, we are offering something completely unique and while it's taking a little time I think more and more people are discovering the channel 8 button on their remotes. Stories we cover are being regularly featured on local and national BBC channels. But the biggest sense of achievement is seeing the team develop and grow, not only as workers but as people. It's thanks to them that we're performing miracles on a near daily basis. What's better is that we're doing it while having a good time.

started working at Latest it was necessary to adapt to the speed of a TV channel. Everything has to be finished faster, so having the ability to solve problems quickly and being fast at editing is key. My previous experience working at my university's TV channel in Spain was definitely a big help when I started working on an English TV channel. Working at Latest TV is a learning experience every day.

When Stephen Colbert took over The Late Show in America earlier this month, he opened the second episode by saying he'd nearly lost his job the night before. The reason: the upload was late and nearly missed its slot. Latest TV doesn’t have 6 million viewers yet but I knew exactly how he felt.

META DE NIRO n The Intern, released this Friday, Robert De Niro plays a 70year-old widower who has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be! Searching for a way back into the workplace he grabs an opportunity to become a ‘senior intern’ at an online fashion site. Yes, the ‘senior intern’ joke is likely to be repeated often, if the trailer is anything to go on! It isn’t really explained by Anne Hathaway’s high-powered fashion entrepreneur decided to hire a retiree as her intern, but from the trailer it looks to be a heartwarming experience. We would expect nothing less from writer/producer/director Nancy Meyer, famous for such feel good films as Father of the Bride, The Parent Trap, What Women Want and The Holiday. The interiors have her trademark glow, the cast are all rosy cheeked and there are a couple of good-natured jabs at the ‘hip’ group of the moment (this time it’s millennials and our excessive use of emoticons). In other words, it looks to be a film I will deeply enjoy: light, fluffy, heart-warming, I’ll probably cry at some point... there is just one issue. That issue, although on paper it is a strange thing to say, is the multiOscar-winning male lead. Robert De Niro is a master of self-parody, both the deliberate and the unintentional. Since 1999’s Analyze This, in which he played a gangster who, because of panic attacks brought about by occupational stress starts therapy sessions, De Niro has been milking his famed ‘tough guy’ persona by referencing his past works. Actively riffing on the more meta identity of an actor isn’t necessarily a bad thing – Analyze This was itself a good film – but self-mockery has led to an era of pale De Niro performances. No longer does this method actor play a character, now he plays ‘renowned tough guy Robert De Niro’ playing a character! We have seen such performances in the Meet The Parents franchise, City by the Sea, Machete, the awful Eddie Murphy buddy movie Showtime, Godsend and even animated spoofs of past characters in Shark Tale and The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle. Where Analyze This was a pitchperfect pinprick to his own storied career, with De Niro wielding his trademark squinty-eyed, Italian-accented menace for laughs, these other films insult his past. Other iconic actors have also come to rely on their routine schtick (Arnold Schwarzenegger isn’t anything but schtick!) as Red and The Expendables proved for action stars. After The Shining, Jack Nicholson’s favourite role was “Jack Nicholson”, in all of his eyebrow-raising, slygrinning, slightly unhinged glory. Marlon Brando also painfully started slumming at the tail-end of his career, intentionally satirizing The Godfather’s Don Corleone for audiences who couldn’t remember his early great work. Tune in to MovieLine on Wednesday for our review of The Intern and – fingers crossed! – hopefully no Robert De Niro put downs! probably make too many jokes about vegetarians, how when they invite me they never seem to consider slamming a chop under the grill to satisfy my omnivorous needs. Of course it is a joke, well for the most part. What I seldom do is joke about local vegetarian restaurants, and why? Well simply because for the most part the standard has been set so high. This week I am reporting from the recently refurbished Food For Friends. This place seems to have been going for longer than I care to remember. Started by Simon Hope all those years ago it was certainly back then a destination for all veggies and although not groundbreaking in a modern culinary sense, it did an excellent job. But Simon sold and it changed, oh how it changed. Today F

Presentation and service were second to none, prices sensible for such excellent cooking and, dare I say it, no chop was required! for Fs is a rather stunning gastronomic experience that has to be tried to be believed. It sits in pole position at the corner of Prince Albert Street and certainly looks smart. Inside is clean and modern and rather chic too, there’s not even a hint of the old school lentil and sandal ethos that for so long was attached to vegetarian dining. The new menu is packed with

fascinating choices and that makes it rather hard to decided. It also makes me realise the frustrations that vegetarians face when dining out and are only offered one vegetarian choice. Our charming waiter brought us first a new dish, an experiment that as yet is not on the menu, ah the privilege of position. It was a lush mushroom pate cleverly disguised as a fruit in a citrus gel – extraordinarily good and I have to say rather ‘meaty’! I was joined by Mrs R, a sparkling companion and to start she chose smoked ricotta and ‘parmesan’ gnudi dumplings served in a sage butter sauce. They looked delightful and tasted even better and our only comment would be that they were too big. Now if the only complaint you have is generosity of portion size you should shut up – so I will!. I chose the vegetarian haggis with

poached egg with sautéed spinach and a smoked paprika hollandaise sauce, all delicious and again beautifully presented. Mrs R moved on to the open ravioli of roasted butternut squash, with beetroot, walnuts and wilted spinach and a white wine and Brighton blue cheese sauce. It certainly hit the spot. I chose the double baked souffle topped with goat's cheese served with roasted Jerusalem artichoke, hazelnut rosemary parsley pesto and wilted cavolo nero. A very big yum here, rich, yet light and wonderful black cabbage. Pretty full after two generous courses I was slightly daunted by the thought of dessert. Mrs R was quick to choose the molten chocolate pudding with salted caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream and crushed pistachios and sent the following 15 minutes ooohing with delight. “I cannot resist anything with salt

caramel” she declared and she polished off the lot. I was rather full so chose some of their home made icecream and sorbets. I loved the mango sorbet, equally the passion fruit but it was a mind blowingly good white chocolate ice-cream that lit up my dessert. It was truly magnificent in its unctuous, sweet loveliness. Presentation and service were second to none, prices sensible for such excellent cooking and, dare I say it, no chop was required! OPERA AT THEATRE ROYAL Follow me: @latestjoef

Ellen Kent brings Carmen & Die Fledermaus to the centre of the city ast month I mentioned that there was a wealth of highquality, affordable classical music on offer in and around Brighton, and Ellen Kent's opera productions certainly fit the bill. Kent has brought her touring performances to the UK and Ireland for over 24 years, playing venues where it might be the only opera staged all year. As you might have gathered, I love concerts and events that battle against esotericism, elitism and the potential barrier of income when it comes to classical music. I've seen Kent present Puccini's Madama Butterfly and Verdi's Rigoletto myself at the Theatre Royal and they were funny, moving and powerful productions. Her operas work both as a vibrant staging in their own right (including a Ralph Steadman-illustrated stage curtain last year for example), with top singing that the experienced can assess, and also as a perfect introduction for those that might not be able to afford places like the Royal Opera House and Glyndebourne. (These places are stunning however and standing tickets are often cheaper than you might think.) Bizet's Carmen is one of the most popular operas of all time, and you will have probably heard the famous "Habanera" aria before. Familiarity doesn't blunt the piece though, in fact it's all very sexy, with memorable and boisterous tunes. It scandalised initial audiences (what fun stuff didn't in its day?) but drew praise from titans such as Wagner, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and even Nietzsche. Read a bit about his Apollonian and Dionysian theory of aestheticism if you want to impress your opera partner. Nadezhda Stoianova will be singing Carmen whereas Maria Tonina and Alyona Kistenyova will be singing Michaela. Last year I thought that Tonina had a fluttering melodic grace about her and sounded like a “divine musical saw”, so this is a great opportunity to hear some beautiful operatic singing in the centre of town. Die Fledermaus by Johan Strauss II (or Strauss the Younger if you prefer your titles more Blackadderian) also features bright, gleaming tunes to get swept up in. This lavish production is set in late 19th century Vienna and is based on Herbert von Karajan’s famous version, with snatches of spoken dialogue. We are also promised some surprising moments such as champagne fountains and mystery guest stars so there should be something for everybody. Any fans of farcical mistaken identity and infidelity in their stories should find much to enjoy here. I've had a few discussions with people about opera recently, and one topic that came up is subtitles. These performances have what is known in opera as surtitles above the stage, and I consider them essential for people to understand what’s going on. Some might consider them distracting, but I personally like to see things for the first time unspoiled by too many plot points. So you can stroll in to the Theatre Royal and be gloriously entertained without feeling like you need to school up beforehand. Die Fledermaus, Tuesday 6 October & Carmen, Wednesday 7 October 7.45pm, Theatre Royal Brighton, tickets from £17.50, www.atgtickets.com

MATERIAL GIRL e’re always bemoaning the miserly ratio of wallspace to artists in a city that’s teeming with such a wealth of creative talent. So it’s great to hear that Kellie Miller has been hard at work opening up the lower ground floor of her eponymous gallery in Market Street, which has more than doubled its space. If you’re passing by, pop in and enjoy an exciting collection of artwork from the gallery’s regular artists alongside some KMA newbies. Another Arty favourite who’s been beavering away in her diversification from painting to textiles is Jacqueline Hammond. ‘Jaxx’ is renowned for producing strong, punchy images that are rich in texture and colour. Her immediate inspiration comes from direct observation, and her subject matter is plucked from the world encountered every day. But whether inspired by the street, seascape or landscape, Jacqueline’s work has a consistently striking edge. Now she’s finding fame under the Smartdeco brand – her Country Lane deckchair shown here featured in ‘Five of the best designer deckchairs’ in the Evening Standard this year. Out of town: since Chalk Gallery opened in Lewes 10 years ago, more than 100 local artists have benefited from exhibiting and learning new skills through collectively running the business. From 2-14 October the success of this enterprise will be celebrated in a special exhibition at the Towner Gallery, Eastbourne, showing work from 81 current and exmembers. This event will be accompanied by the publication of a beautiful commemorative book. www.artymagazines.com Twitter @brightonsarty

ON THE OTHER HAND… Local actor and writer Robert Cohen’s Something Rotten

hile the jury is out over Benedict Cumberbatch’s Barbican Hamlet, the City of Brighton & Hove is to hear the thoughts of another player from Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy: Claudius of Denmark. Something Rotten, written and performed by Brighton’s own Robert Cohen, looks at the events of the world’s most famous play from the viewpoint of Hamlet’s uncle-turned-stepfather – King Claudius, the fratricidal regicide who marries his victim’s widow and in turn excites both the homicidal and the procrastinatory impulses of the prince. “Claudius is an endlessly intriguing character,” says Cohen; “We know he murdered Hamlet’s father and married his mother, but Shakespeare doesn’t give us too much else. How long has Claudius had designs on his brother’s crown? How long have he and Gertrude been at it? How did he get on with his nephew, prior to the recent upheavals? And, just by the by, how did Yorick become the most famous corpse in literary history?” Directed by Jenny Rowe,

Something Rotten was premiered at the Barnstaple Fringe TheatreFest, where the system of audience reviews brought forth such comments as “A very committed performance from an outstanding performer. A great show for those familiar or, like me, unfamiliar with Hamlet.” Robert Cohen has specialised in characters ‘beyond the pale’, from Don John in Much Ado About Nothing to the real-life McCarthyite supergrass in The Trials of Harvey Matusow (FringeReview Outstanding Theatre Award) to the Russian gangster Stepan in the BBC sitcom Ideal to the tormented traffic warden Quint in High Vis – the latter winning acclaim. THE YOUNG CHEKOV Anton Chekhov is one of the undisputed masters of world drama. He is usually thought to hide himself behind his characters and stories, keeping his own personality well off-stage. But when he was young he wrote three plays, Platonov, Ivanov and The Seagull, which, with their thrilling sunbursts of youthful anger and romanticism, reveal a very different playwright from the one known by his mature, more familiar work. Now the Young Chekhov season at Chichester Festival Theatre brings these three blazing dramas

Nina Sosanya, James McArdle & Joshua James in rehearsal for Chichester Festival Theatre's Young Chekhov season Photo: Johan Persson

together to offer audiences the chance for the first time ever to explore the birth of a revolutionary dramatic voice.

THE SEAGULL On a summer’s day in a makeshift theatre by a lake, a bold new play is to be performed. It is the work of a young, would-be playwright, Konstantin, who is searching for a new, more authentic dramatic form. The play stars his beautiful muse and neighbour, Nina. The assembled family audience includes his actress mother, Arkadina, who has just arrived from Moscow with the famous novelist, Trigorin. What happens during, and in the days immediately after, this play’s first performance will change not just the course of the summer, but the lives of everyone involved, for ever after. This masterly meditation on love and art is both comic and tragic, and marks the birth of the modern stage.

IVANOV Nikolai Ivanov, a regional councillor and landowner, has tried to live his life in a bold new way, taking risks in everything from business to romance. Now his estate is failing, his wife is dangerously ill and he’s up to his neck in debt. To cap it all, he’s surrounded by malicious gossip. Against his better judgment he sees an irresistible opportunity, in the adoring form of Sasha Lebedev, daughter of the Chairman of the local council. She offers her devotion, youth and beauty, but also the considerable riches of her name. But can Ivanov survive the guilt and shame scandal would bring?

• LATEST 7 20 www.thelatest.co.uk •

Set in a remote backwater, this angry and outspoken play, streaked with satire, drink and anti-Semitism, is full of an outright passion Chekhov would soon forego in his later plays.

PLATONOV Russian schoolteacher Mikhail Platonov, has a problem, one he has lived with all his life – he’s irresistible to women. Alongside the attentions of his home-loving wife, Sasha, he must also attend to the racing pulses of Maria Grekova, a young chemistry student, Sofya Yegorovna, a married acquaintance from his past, and most dangerously of all, one of Chekhov’s greatest creations, Anna Petrovna, a formidably intelligent widow. If that wasn’t enough, he’s broke, in debt, and about to lose his home. For the sanity of everyone, and the stability of society, something must be done about Platonov. Set in the blazing heat of the middle of nowhere, complete with criminals who live in the forest and a runaway train, this freewheeling comedy is a cry of defiance at the adult traps of conventionality and moral hypocrisy. Young Chekhov promises to be an extraordinary event. Performed by one ensemble of actors, each play can be seen as a single performance or they can be enjoyed as one event, either over different days or as one intense theatrical experience on trilogy days on Saturdays 10, 17, 31 October and 14 November.

GENGAHR FEST, FRINGE... Leftfield pop psychedelic sounds AND THE REST The Brighton Comedy Festival and Brighton Comedy Fringe aren’t the only laughs in town ctober is always a fun-packed month in Brighton, as the Brighton Comedy Festival and the Brighton Comedy Fringe take over. Shows from such luminaries as Dara O’Briain, Nina Conti, Ed Byrne and Bridget Christie come to the big rooms, and award-nominated treats from the likes of Tom Parry, Beasts, Matthew Crosby and Tom Neenan arrive at the Basement venue to tantalise and entertain us all. But that’s not all there is. In amongst the melee of marvellousness that are these two comedy celebrations, there are also some very interesting comedy evenings that aren’t affiliated with either of them. And it’s worth making a note of them. Gittins To Know You is a monthly comedy night hosted by anti-comedy hero Brian Gittins. Over at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, it’s got the low ceiling and intimacy of a great comedy gig, coupled with incredible headliners that in the past have included Al Murray, Tim Key and Stewart Lee. Plus support acts provided by the local Brighton comedy community (handpicked of course). This month’s headliners are sketch duo Cardinal Burns, as seen on TV in two series of their own self-named Channel 4 sketch show. Another great monthly night that can be relied upon to have a top quality headline act supported by those about to break through is Comic Boom. Previous headliners have included Sarah Millican, Hal Cruttenden, and Seann Walsh, with support slots on their way up from Nick Helm, Nish Kumar and James Acaster. It’s a real chance to see the stars of the future alongside someone already regularly on TV and touring their own shows. This month’s top name is Matt Rees – a real treat. If you’re after something with quality names breaking through, already established on the circuit, and new acts coming up then check out the return of Podium Comedy in its new home of The Greys Pub. Laughs come from Laura Lexx, alongside Dave Thompson, and local stars Julie Jepson, James McDonnell and Gatis Kandis, hosted by Dan Fardell. All free. So when booking your festival and fringe tickets, don’t forget the hidden extras. They’re worth it. Gittins To Know You, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, 15 October 2015, £8, 8pm, www.drinkinbrighton.co.uk Comic Boom, Komedia, Thursday 29 October 2015, £9/7, 8pm, komediabrighton.ticketsolve.com Podium Comedy, The Greys Pub, Wednesday 21 October 2015, 7.30pm, free Brighton Comedy Festival listings are at brightoncomedyfestival.com Brighton Comedy Fringe listings are at www.brightoncomedyfringe.co.uk

've just had my wisdom teeth pulled out, so you will have to forgive me if I talk a bit funny. It's not the best, I must say," says Felix, singer and guitarist with up and coming band, Gengahr. "Just a local anaesthetic, so it really f*****g hurts." It seems Felix is prone to a bit of mouth bother every now and then, as he recalls his Great Escape experience earlier in the year… "We played The Haunt for the NME, which was great, and then a house party at 2am. That was completely mental. I had tonsillitis for both those shows… I shouldn't have even been playing. I just trashed myself and then lay in bed for a few days." After a few false starts, and a name change, the band have been on roll the last year or so, and life has changed dramatically. "When we signed to Transgressive, we all quit our jobs, and then realised it takes months for an advance to come through, so we were screwed for a while. 'Got that record deal. Right, I quit!' "I've been in bands for years, when we were 12 or 13, with Dan (drums) and Hugh (bass), mucking around." Eventually, they hooked up with the superb guitarist John Victor, and eventually the band started to really find find its feet… "We needed to give it a proper shot and do it seriously. We got back in the rehearsal room, knocked up a few demos, put them online, and within a couple of months we had quite a lot of

love from all the blogs. We got an agent and manager off the back of those demos. "We did that many times before that, and no one cared. I thought they were good, but I had thought that the last four times we chucked stuff online! It was funny, because we didn't actually look back at the site until a good month or so had passed. I remember then checking and going 'wow', people had been commenting they really liked it and sharing it. It was word of mouth at the beginning and that was the basis from which we could build on, from that small, scattered fanbase. In June, the band released their debut album, A Dream Outside, a wonderful amalgamation of summer-soaked, hazy-cumdynamic indie psychedelia with influences from the likes of Tame Impala, Deerhunter, Twin Sister and Conan Mockasin. And, as for the name of the band? "We put stuff out under the name Rez, but we got some message from some angry rapper in New York who implied we would have to change our name… we quickly came up with the name Gengahr. We were in the pub having a few beers, and it seemed like a funny idea at the time. It doesn't mean anything. We stole it from Pokemon, we thought it sounded pretty cool." Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards hosts a traditional game of bingo alongside performances from the comedian Brian Gittins (as seen in TV's 'Derek') Burlesque from Cherry Shakewell and chap-hop star, Professor Elemental. All raising money for local MS charities. Emporium, Saturday 3 October, 7.30pm, £15

To coincide with the Labour Conference in Brighton, the Caroline Of Brunswick are holding a comedy night dedicated to Jeremy Corbyn, featuring some unapologetically left-wing comedians, and maybe one rightwinger for balance. Featuring Ashley Haden, Nathan Wilcock, and Richard Rycroft as Magnus Turner MP.

Mark Thomas – Trespass, The Old Market, 16 September 2015, Victoria Nangle ★★★★

Mark Thomas demonstrates yet again why he is the pied piper of subversive mischief and that important voice at the back of the mind that asks: 'why?' A show of two halves, the first saw Thomas providing his own warm up – jubilant at the news of Corbyn's appointment and supplying gleeful updates on last year's show '100 Acts Of Minor Dissent'. The second half was the show 'Trespass' proper, challenging the creeping corporate ownership of city walkways with his signature performance art and allencompassing storytelling. A wonderful combination of meaningful thought-provocation with incredibly well-crafted comical stories, this is an enticing call to arms from the veteran satirist.

distinction between love and hate. The staging was superb too, and Sarah Harlington’s turn as Kate Monster and Lucy the Slut was wildly impressive, voicing two characters at once and exuding charisma and charm herself. Fun, and occasionally funny, but not as subversive or challenging as it claims to be. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 22 September 2015 Joe Fuller ★★★★

Crosby, Stills & Nash Rock legends have a tendency to come out to play these days, touring being the means to income as opposed to album sales – how times have changed. CSN have been around for some

Avenue Q The popular musical uses original muppet-type characters portrayed on stage by actor/puppeteers in a tale of down-and-outs in an “”outerouter borough” of New York. The selling point is rude language and controversial topics (race, sexuality and so on) but the plot, although fairly sharp and flabless, is gratingly cliched and predictable. That might the bread and butter of musicals however, and the songs didn’t disappoint; ‘There’s A Fine, Fine Line’ is a memorable, stirring number for example about the blurred

time and I fell for their irresistible sounds as a teenager when I saw their Woodstock performance on film. That was them in 1969 and

8 now, 46 years on and with Neil Young no longer playing, they are touring with a set that includes the classics that we all wanted to hear and new songs, songs which prove that for the most part there is life in the old dogs yet. In the first set of the evening they were a little shaky, but as the gig progressed they gained in both confidence and stature. David Crosby is the wit in this line-up, his rapport with the audience was great – but above all the voice is still there, kicking ass in his solos and blending seamlessly in their distinctive close harmonies. Graham Nash is the story teller and he too can still sing, the voice again perfect in the harmonies and excellent in his solo work. Stephen Stills, well Stills no longer has a voice to speak of, fragile at times, still characterful but nothing more sadly. It did not matter though when he hit those guitars, proving that Stills still has it when it comes to rock. In an evening of highs and lows, a weak Marrakech Express and some tiresome hippy stuff, to some truly memorable musical moments, in particular new songs from Crosby and Nash, it became obvious that these guys really are worthy of the title Rock Legends. Brighton Centre, 19 September 2015 Andrew Kay ★★★★

Al Murray: One Man, One Guvnor This 20th anniversary show from Al Murray’s Pub Landlord is testament to the character’s enduring mass appeal. His commanding presence, incredibly quick wit and beersloshing, bug-eyed physical comedy all still raise belly laughs, however they dwindled in an over-long first half. There was the slightly mucky feeling of being at a political rally with a confused leader, rather than a comedy gig; while a muddying of waters under the banner of “common sense” can be one of Murray’s cleverest tricks, here it often lacked the flashes of clarity that firmly mark it out as satire. Theatre Royal Brighton, 19 September 2015 Rosie James ★★★
