HEADS UP HEADS DOWN Reasons To Be Pretty
Greg has a problem. His girlfriend, Steph, is livid because of a comment he made – and he can't quite remember what it was. It must have been bad, but he remembers thinking he was paying her a compliment. In a viciously honest comedy about real lives and the reality of being in love, one thing Greg does know: he is in for one whole heap of trouble. hat do you want to be when you grow up? The first thing I remember hoping to be when bigger was a fairy. I think I was about three or four years old and already I had an inkling that it might be tricky, as I hadn’t actually seen any. My fallback was to be a butterfly. The wings must’ve been the most important aspect, but I do remember feeling the compromise hard – with the hope I wouldn’t have to make it. My brother wanted to be a toyshop keeper. Clearly his aptitude for strategy was already in place as he imagined all of the playthings that would make up his domain. Ambition, when you’re small, is limited to the breadth of your own experience of what exists (or what could exist if you screw up your eyes and believe really hard). There’s also the sneaky suspicion that ‘grownups’ might be something of a myth themselves, as friends suddenly become parents and bosses too. And if you’ve ever spent an evening in a pub with a medical student you’ll never be able to regain that unconditional belief in the infallibility of the medical profession. So concessions are made. And fallibilities allowed for. In yourself as well as others – remember that one when you’re beating yourself up for not writing the next great opus or number one hit. My other ambitions over the years have included moving to Brighton, owning my own home, going on a ‘proper’ date, and making my own bread. So far so good, but until recently there hadn’t been a proper “when I grow up I want to be...” moment for quite some time. Until the other day. When I was flicking through the iPlayer Radio app and something caught my eye and I had an epiphany. When I grow up I want to be Sheila Hancock. No fallback or extra-strong believing muscles necessary this time.

ANDREW BULLOCK THE MAGIC FLUTE
Follow me: @andrewjbullock
Y
ou know it’s been a good season of Celebrity Big Brother when the spin-off show has to stop transmitting live because someone from regular non-famous Big Brother circa 2006 decides it's appropriate to hurl a champagne flute across the studio at an American exhousemate wearing a tiara. I'm starting to wonder how the producers manage to keep this wonderfulness up! Part of me thinks they actually sit the contestants down in a room together before the show starts, where everyone actually gets on quite well, and map out a story arc. Like "on day 9 Bobby, you tell Farrah that no amount of lip gloss can mask her ugly soul"; or "on day 27, Austin, you realise that you are actually in love with James." Having said that, I actually don't think they need to do this. The reason Celebrity Big Brother is twelve thousand times more entertaining than regular Big Brother is because famous people are slightly detached mentally. People in the public eye/in the media/from Hollywood/on stage/whatever else they do have gotten themselves into that career or lifestyle because they have crazy running through their veins already. Anyone in the industry doesn't need to act – they'll be dramatic, horrendous, hilariously outspoken and inappropriate by themselves. This is why they're famous. Although I think that what happened on Bit On The Side last week was a Big Brother first. Basically, the one from 2006 decided to get all up in the one from 16 and Pregnant’s grill because she slagged off the one from the cover of Nuts Magazine on a previous episode. So naturally she deserved a glass in the face. What totally sucked was that the show went off air just as Aisleyne The Offender was reaching tantalisingly for the champagne flute. I believe Janice Dickinson and Jenna Jameson were actually smiling quite sweetly sat in-between them before the incident actually happened. But to the chagrin of the viewers at home, the camera cut out and what followed apparently was a full on bar fight with chairs and further flutes
The show went off air just as Aisleyne The Offender was reaching tantalisingly for the champagne flute
being launched around like it was Christmas. I'd like to hope that the three American celebrities were tag-teaming Aisleyne The Chucker given that all Farrah did was call her a hag – a badge that many women on reality TV wear oh so proudly. On the next evening's episode, Rylan made the following comment on the matter: "As you may know last night's episode was interrupted because of events on the show and those events weren't shown on the show." Who wrote that auto-cue script? Show, shown, show? No, no, no! Anyway, James from The Apprentice won which was nice for him given that he didn't win The Apprentice. What a jolly nice chap he is. I see a 2016 calendar in his future. Favourite quote from the series: Chloe-Jasmine: (On pouring cheesy, soppy, yellow goo all over each other for a task) "This reminds me of the time we went to the Harvester!" UNLOCKING POTENTIAL
GET ON BOARD
Brighton & Hove Buses: Christmas excursions
Dr Caroline Oprandi Keeping you up to date with science and technology at PACA everal years back when I was studying at the University of Brighton I had to purchase textbooks related to the UK’s GCSE and A Level Science national curriculum. However, it was rather annoying to discover that I soon had to purchase yet more books from the publisher Nelson Thornes because the textbooks had become outdated due to the changing AQA Examination Board specifications. AQA state on their website: “Many educational books and digital resources are published each year to support new specifications and it can be a challenge for teachers to find the right resource for their students.” It then occurred to me that whoever owns Nelson Thornes (now sold) must be making vast sums of money out of the changes in the national curriculum since schools will need to update their textbooks regularly. After a bit of research I found out that Nelson Thornes were in fact owned by the group: Infinitas Learning. Infinitas Learning itself is a portfolio company owned by the Hedge Fund Management Group Bridgepoint. This is what Bridgepoint have to say about Infinitas Learning: “Infinitas offers bundled packages of content such as textbooks, teaching aids, testing and assessment tools and revision aids in both electronic and traditional format. With strong brands and market leadership positions in the markets in which it operates, Infinitas represents a strategic platform from which to consolidate a growing sector supported by increased government spending on education and curriculum changes. There are also increased growth opportunities in the e-learning, supplemental materials and testing and assessment segments.” The other major exam board is Edexcel, owned by Pearson. It’s no surprise then, that in order to get the best Edexcel grades you will need to buy Pearson books. Nelson Thornes has been sold to Oxford University Press. The review of the merger by the Office of Fair Trading had this to say in the report: “So the upshot is that with the forever changing exam board requirements schools have to update their textbooks regularly. In secondary schools, curriculum changes affect the content that schools and exam boards must cover. The extent of the change will determine whether new resources are needed.” A few years back Oxford University Press was ordered to pay nearly £1.9m after two subsidiary companies bribed government officials for contracts to supply school textbooks in East Africa. Supplying textbooks to schools has obviously become a very lucrative business. The national curriculum was first introduced for state schools in 1988 to ensure that state schools of all local education authorities have a common curriculum and furthermore enabled the compilation of league tables. The league tables were then intended to encourage parents to choose schools based on their measured ability to teach the national curriculum. The national curriculum does not apply to independent schools. Brighton College has this to say about the national curriculum: “The college is not obliged to follow the national curriculum and chooses not to. We believe that our own innovative and imaginative curriculum better prepares children for GCSEs, A Levels and beyond.” Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) is a college offering sixth form, 11-16 years, youth centre, adult learning, community education, sports centre and pre-school. Stephen Hough opens the classical season at Brighton Dome
S
outh Downs food and drink was celebrated with the regional launch of British Food Fortnight, when the team behind southdownsfood.org brought together over 120 leading lights in the industry and media at the Rathfinny Estate in East Sussex. Tying in with the harvest festival, British Food Fortnight is the biggest annual, national celebration of the country’s food and drink and is a chance for farmers, producers and sellers to shout about the delicious food and drink they produce and for us to show them our support by tucking into it.
Sim Canetty-Clarke
T
he classical season at the Dome begins here, with the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra's 91st season and a world famous pianist in Stephen Hough. Hough recently played a unique concert at Glyndebourne as part of the Brighton Festival and has been described as "sounding like no one else" and possessing "the most perfect piano playing conceivable" according to the Guardian. Hough will be showcasing his ability and range (see his version of Rachmaninoff's Paganini Rhapsody on youtube for a more technically demanding exhibition) with Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1. As is often noted, Beethoven's 'first' piano concerto is in fact the second he wrote, but was the first to be published. Beethoven is always thrillingly melodic and emotionally sweeping in his pieces and is therefore a great place for someone new to classical music to start. The first half features works from two Russian composers, including Tchaikovsky's 'Francesca da Rimini' tone poem, or symphonic poem as it is sometimes known. These are normally one movement and are often beautiful, expressive pieces on a theme, in this case regarding a damned couple locked in a permanent embrace in Dante's Inferno. The piece is alternately brooding, passionate, desperate and intricately orchestrated. The second Russian work is a more immediately pretty number, Vasily Kalinnikov's Symphony No. 1. Kalinnikov was highly respected by Tchaikovsky and his reputation was established by this piece, although sadly only after his death. The second 'Andante commodamente' movement (meaning moderately slow, comfortably) opens gently, conjuring pastoral, peaceful imagery with a prominent harp part. I'm surprised it hasn't been pilfered by more films or TV shows in fact, and should be stunning to witness live. We should be proud that we have our own orchestra, and it also makes for a great day out at the Dome. The value for money is astonishing; at the time of writing one can buy tickets in the centre stalls for £1 child, £8.25 student/nus/under 18/job seekers at 50% discount and £16.50 full price adult. If you're a student, you are lucky enough to see a stunning orchestra live in a fantastic sounding room for about the same price as a cinema ticket. It's always worth looking at the Dome's website carefully, phoning, or asking in person at the ticket office near the Theatre Royal to see what the best seating deal is for you. The centre stalls tickets I mentioned for example are quite near the stage and are cheaper than some seats further back, which might seem odd to some. This is because many classical music fans prefer the sound further back in a room, but I personally think there's something to be said for being close to the action. You feel the intensity of the playing, the weighted glances, quick page turning, theatrical bowing, musical head bobbing and lots more. If you would like to make more of a day of it then you can see presenter Peter Back interview one of the performers before the concert for an insight into the music and life of a musician. Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Sunday 11 October, from £11.50 full price, www.brightondome.org Pre-concert interview, Education Pavilion, 1.45pm, £3.75

007_LS749_interview - Ed Byrne_011_LS466_interview 02/10/2015 10:23 Page 1
HEART BYRNE Ed Byrne chats with Victoria Nangle about mountain climbing, comic taboos & teleporting to New Zealand
How do, Ed – How’s today treating you? Today was a good one. Woke up at a friend’s house in Frinton-on-Sea. Took some sea air with the kids. Then had lunch with my cousin somewhere in Hertfordshire then went to London to interview Al Murray for a show for Radio 4. Busy!
I’m very fond of New Zealand. Its landscape is like the Scottish Highlands turned up to 15. A portal from my back garden to Arthur’s Pass in NZ would be pretty sweet.
Similarly, a comic could tackle something quite lightweight yet still manage to come across as an insensitive arsehole. Do you ever get a story that burns a hole in your comedian’s pocket but you can’t find a place to use? Not really. Sometimes an idea can be kicking around my head that takes years to turn into a usable joke. I had a story in my show Crowd Pleaser, about meeting an actor called Paul Winfield. The incident occurred in 1998. I didn’t figure out a way to make it funny until 10 years later. Similarly, there’s a story in this new show about something that happened to me in Boston back in 2004. It can sometimes take a very long time for an idea to coalesce into a usable bit of stand up. Other times, you think of an idea in the afternoon, try it out that night and BAM. Instant new bit.
The new show is called ‘Outside Looking In’. That’s quite mysterious. Are you really still the outsider with such a successful career? The title refers to the fact that, as a comic, I sometimes feel that rather than living my life the way other people do, I’m watching how people live their lives and talking about it on stage. I sometimes feel like an observer, a spectator, rather than a participant. You’ve spent the last couple of years utilising your passion for the outdoors as a TV presenter on the likes of ‘Dangerous Roads’ and ‘Dara & Ed’s Big Adventure’. Does this translate to your home life too, with your kids seizing on adventures every school holiday? I’m trying to get my kids into the outdoors. Camping, canoeing, hiking, skiing, all that sort of thing. At the moment they’re only very young and the trick is not to put them off by pushing them too hard. At the moment they seem pretty enthusiastic, though.
What is your process for writing a new show? I really don’t have one. See above!
A comic could tackle something quite lightweight yet still manage to come across as an insensitive arsehole
Having achieved such remarkable feats as climbing Mount Blanc – twice – what still calls to you as a challenge, if anything? In fairness, I didn’t make it to the top of Mont Blanc the second time. That’s a mountain I’d like to tackle again. It still feels a bit like unfinished business. The ongoing challenge I’m enjoying is the Scottish Munros. There’s 282 of them and so far I’ve climbed 75. Hopefully that number will rise while I’m in Edinburgh this August. Is there a game plan to meet it, and what is that game plan? There’s no game plan. Having two small kids means finding the time is the hardest part. much harder than slogging up a hillside in torrential rain.
If you had a teleportation device that could only be rooted between two places in the world, but could zap you there in an instance, which two places would you connect and why?
Watch Latest Entertainment on
The adventures sound marvellous. As an observational comedian you must simply be hoovering up material for each show, as you see so much of the world that so few get to observe first hand. Are there any taboos for you as to what you’ll talk about on stage, both from a personal and from an internationally political one, considering the places you go? I used to talk more about my travels around the world. Nowadays my stuff comes from more personal stuff that happens to me. I’m more likely to get a good bit of stand up out of a visit to my doctor than a visit to a mexican wrestling match. As regards taboos, I don’t think it’s possible to write off any subject. What matters is how you tackle that subject. A comic can joke about the most horrendous subject but the joke could still have a moral centre that justifies it.

As someone who is creative, what are your biggest distractions when you’re trying to write/create, and how do you battle them? Watching TV is my greatest distraction. The main problem is I can always rationalise my TV watching as “research”. If you could have any super power what would it be and what would be the first adventure you would have with it? I’ve always fancied the ability to stop time. I know that if I could do it, though, I’d mainly use it for quite mundane things like cheating at quizzes and getting more sleep. What question should I have asked you that I foolishly overlooked? You’ve been very thorough. Congratulations! CHEKHOV AT CHICHESTER Three of the revered playwright’s early plays round off Festival 2015
A
nna Chancellor, James McArdle, Samuel West and Nina Sosanya are among the 23-strong ensemble in a major season of Anton Chekhov’s early plays – The Seagull, Ivanov and Platonov – that opened last week at Chichester Festival Theatre. Each of the three plays can be seen as a single performance or they can be enjoyed as one event, either over different days or as one intense theatrical experience on Trilogy Days. With £10 tickets available across the Young Chekhov season, audiences can see all three plays for as little as £30. This season within a season is anchored by a trio of talent – Chekhov himself, playwright David Hare, and director Jonathan Kent, returning to Chichester following his triumphant production of Gypsy in Festival 2014. Young Chekhov reunites Kent and Hare who have previously collaborated on productions for the Almeida Theatre. These three plays, written when Anton Chekhov was young, offer a new perspective on the dramatist,
revealing a youthful anger and romanticism that is very different to his mature, more familiar work. The central character in Platonov is a debt-ridden schoolteacher who is about to lose his home, yet remains irresistible to women. This freewheeling comedy set in the middle of nowhere explores the traps of conventionality and moral hypocrisy. Nikolai Ivanov is a councillor and landowner who has tried to live in a bold new way, taking risks in everything from business to romance. Now his estate is failing and his wife is dangerously ill. Ivanov is an angry and outspoken satire, full of a passion that Chekhov would forego in his later plays. In The Seagull, a bold new play by a young writer is about to be staged. What happens during the performance, and in the days that follow it, will change the lives of everyone involved. The best known of the Young Chekhov trilogy is a meditation on love and art that’s both comic and tragic. Three plays. 23 Actors. 50 roles.

MR PREDICTABLE e recently reviewed the Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg starring American Ultra on MovieLine and – for once! – Joseph and I were in complete agreement. Whilst the lead actors were perfect for their roles and had great chemistry together, the script sorely let them down. The premise of the film saw Eisenberg’s stoner, who was actually a yetto-be-activated government sleeper agent, be deemed a liability and targeted for extermination. Stewart played his stoner girlfriend, who didn’t actually get much to do other than play off Eisenberg with some great one-liners and... get kidnapped. Because clearly, that is a completely novel concept for the ‘girlfriend’ role! We didn’t rate the film highly on MovieLine and almost all other film critics agreed, seeing the film do poorly at the box office. Max Landis, American Ultra’s screenwriter, previously best known for Chronicle (2012) – a found footage film about teenagers with superpowers – did not take the low audience numbers well. “Is trying to make original movies in a big way just not a valid career path anymore?”, Landis raged on Twitter. “Are original ideas over?” The film, as you have probably already worked out, is a cross between Zombieland and The Manchurian Candidate, but not half as good as either. Landis’ latest film, Mr Right, screened at last month’s Toronto Film Festival looks to also be proving that yes, original ideas really are over. Another hitman action/comedy: this time with a breakdancing killer (Sam Rockwell) romancing a ‘kooky’ Manic Pixie Dream Girl (Anna Kendrick). Just like American Ultra, he is a stoner who only kills the people who employ him, but this time his love interest is weird and peppy. Which is not to say that Anna Kendrick is anything other than wonderful, of course! But this film is quite clearly Grosse Point Blank crossed with Dexter. The film must have been intended as a screwball comedy but whilst both actors give it their best shot it is more than just the 16-year age gap that grates. There is a cute meet, in a corner shop where Mr Right’s lightning quick reflexes manage to save a rack of condoms from hitting the floor, and the dialogue is cheesy, mixed with ‘vulgar-so-it-must-befunny’ failed punchlines. Throw in a homoerotic relationship between the baddies’ henchmen, a hitman using Tai Chi to beat everyone and flashy yet deadened editing and… it’s a film you’ve seen a thousand times before. Not even setting the film in New Orleans could possibly give it any colour. Blockbuster cinema certainly is in need of new ideas. You can probably guess how the film ends already and now you don’t need to sit through it! We watch all the new releases at MovieLine so we can tell you what to miss and what to rush to the cinema to see. Tune in this Wednesday at 6.30pm on Latest TV for this week’s reviews. ANDREW KAY LET’S DANCE The body is weak but the spirit is willing
SPONSORED BY Bardsley’s Fish & Chips
O
h how I love to dance. I love to simply let rip on a dance floor and feel the music flow through my body. Of course these days it takes some pretty full on arrangements and orchestrations to reach my tubby, late middle aged extremities – and even if it does get there the restrictions of being un-exercised and goutridden have taken their toll. Once upon a time I would be first up, well that’s not entirely true, once upon a time before that once upon I time that I had leapt to I would hover nervously at the edges of parties and school discos, terrified of setting foot anywhere near a dance floor. The once upon a time that I mean came a little later when I had left school and headed off to Chelsea School of Art. That summer I went to Guernsey in the Channel Islands to work in a hotel for the season. I was a waiter, commis chef and barman and life had never seemed so good. I learnt how to do silver service, pour wine, make egg mayonnaise, spend money and drink – oh how we drank. Well this was Guernsey and a single whisky was about 28p, can you imagine. Of course that was all relative as my weekly wage was £16. Still, after years of £1 pocket money and terrible saturday job pay (19p an hour) it was a prince’s ransom. Back then the licensing laws prevented you from opening a bar in Guernsey on Sundays so it was a dry day, except if you knew where to go – and we knew. At the end of my shift, around 9pm, I would shed my drip dry white short, elasticated dickie and Stayprest black trousers and don my civvies. Then a few of us would make the track over to Ronnie Ronalde’s Hotel where we would take advantage of his special license in the Viennese Ballroom. I know, hardly the place to look for a fashionable 18 year old – but we could drink! It was the early ‘70s and we should have all been in a trendy club but here we were, waltzing around this extraordinarily chintzy place to the cool vibes of a three piece band, guitar, organ and drums. I will never forget that drummer, it’s hard to describe how he did it but if you spot me in the street then ask and I will

demonstrate, I really do not mind. The residents of Mr Ronalde’s hotel were, should we say stately. I mean even today I would be in the lower age bracket in the room. There was though something really charming about this room of elderly guests swaying in time to the band and gliding clockwise around the ornate room. The experience did have its dangers though. I could at that time perform an adequate waltz thanks to the efforts of mum, but I was certainly not good enough to deal with the requests of some of the game old ladies who would ask us to dance. Once out on the floor they would expect far more than my mediocre three beat shuffle, oh no, they wanted to dip and reverse and sooooo much more. I did a lot of excusing myself and dashing off to the loos to escape. The other danger was the lit cigarette. It was a pretty standard accessory for the ladies to dance with a fag in their hand or in the corner of their mouth. As they swished around, incendiary device in hand, they would often catch you on the arm or the cheek even and we often returned to our garden shed home with burns. Yes I lived in a shed! Later that summer I started at art school. Chelsea was the very height of fashionable and to be fashionable then meant doing fashionable stuff – and that included dancing. Chelsea had great parties, I was at one of the early Sex Pistols gigs there and we had themed balls too, a fabulous Glen Miller style band once to which I wore a sailors outfit and danced with my friend Joy. Joy was wearing a powder blue period strapless gown borrowed from her
mother and very pretty it was too. I was a pretty decent dancer by this point and I spun her around and around, throwing her out at arm’s length then drawing her back in close. We cut quite a figure on that dance floor that night. That is until I rather over enthusiastically spun her away and then back. Joy moved with elegance but sadly the dress did not and failed to return at the same speed. Of course this meant that the cups were displaced and sent off centre revealing Joy’s rather fabulous upper half in a manner that we had not intended. I drew her quickly into my chest but it was too late and we got a rather unexpected round of applause before she could adjust her apparel and her dignity. As I head towards 60 I marvel at the music of my days, the dances that we danced. We jived and jitterbugged through the seventies American nostalgia boom, swayed to Roxy Music and posed to the weird warblings of the new romantics. I did a bit of pogoing too but not much as it was hard to make it look good whilst avoiding being spat on. Then came disco and wild nights where we never left the dance floor – how those clubs made any money at the bar I will never know as we danced until we were ready to drop. By the time I hit my forties though the music left me cold, I couldn’t get to grips with heavy club sounds, pulsing beats that went on for hours on end. Dancing then became an occasional joy, reserved for weddings and parties in people my ages homes. I recently went to a lovely wedding party and had a very jolly time – but I sat out the dancing until very near to the end when my good friend Carla literally dragged me onto the dance floor. How I regretted having sat it out until that point. I loved it and very soon gave in to the beat of the wedding band and threw myself into things. I didn’t get burned, the music was familiar and the bar had done more than enough to remove my inhibitions. Thank you Adam and Helen for a great night out and Carla for making me dance. The next day my feet ached like billyo but my heart was light as a cloud.

es, I had a lovely holiday, thanks for asking. Two weeks in beautiful Padstow, that picturesque port on the north Cornish coast where Rick Stein has his seafood restaurant. And his bistro. And his cafe. And his fish'n'chip shop. And his deli. And his gift shop. And his hotel. And his cookery school. And his fishmongers. Bliss, it was. We even had one day when it didn't rain. And shall I tell you what's particularly special about that part of the country? It's the fact that it's really hard – and I mean really, really, really hard – to get a mobile phone signal, at least on Vodafone. And even when you can, it's nigh-on impossible to get 4G, 3G or indeed any other G you care to mention, so you can forget about using the internet on your phone unless you can find somewhere with wi-fi. Which we more or less couldn't, unless we wanted to spend all day in the pub (and for once we actually didn't). The cottage we hired certainly didn't have it. So, yes, not only had we fled to a beautiful part of the country, but we'd also inadvertently managed to escape the tyranny of the digital age. No checking our emails every five minutes, no tweeting, no Facebooking, no Googling, no nuffing. Instead, we had no option but to switch off and truly unwind, to connect with the real world, to savour the here and now, to take in our marvellous surroundings, to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells, to talk in real time to other human beings, to breathe that invigorating sea air, to let our minds and bodies relax, to let the tension and the stress fall away. And boy, did it drive me bloody nuts. You see, the snag is, my iPhone and its assorted functions have, rightly or wrongly (yes, OK, wrongly), become central to my day-to-day life. I reach for my phone so regularly and instinctively these days – to download a bit of music, listen to the radio, to check if Groupon's still offering that online dog psychology course, to send out a tweet asking if anyone's yet discovered the point of the Albion's car park stewards – that to have this facility taken away from me, even temporarily, felt truly debilitating. But I came to cope, that's the point. As the days went by, I was forced to re-examine my priorities, to remember there's more to life than gawping at a little screen and tapping into a tiny keyboard. And now I can honestly say I feel a happier person. Yep, I'm home, the new iPhones are out and this time I've bought the big one. Mike Ward is the TV Critic of the Daily Star and the TV Editor of the Daily Express Saturday magazine. Hear him every Monday afternoon with Guy Lloyd on Brighton’s Juice 107.2

GIVE ME FIVE t’s that time again. After not much deliberation and far too much Rioja, we’ve decided to publish a third edition of Art in Brighton for 2016. If you haven’t come across our annual publication, it’s a coffee table style book that celebrates the city’s creative people, places and events. Each year we try to push the boundaries a little bit further to make it even better for the artists involved. If you want to find out more, or be included on our mailing list, just get in touch at our website below. Out of town: We love a creative collaboration. It’s always a treat when artists with very different approaches and techniques combine forces to put on a mixed show of collected works that complement each other perfectly. So whatever your taste, you’re guaranteed a visual treat if you head out to the Hop Gallery in Lewes right now. Five Sussex artists – Sue Barnes, Angela Perrin, Kate Penoyre, Lesley Robertshaw and Sheila Marlborough – who met when they were members of Chalk Gallery, have got together again to exhibit their paintings at the Hop Gallery in Lewes, under the title ‘Paint 5’. Their new work is highly individual and ranges from abstraction, figurative, memories and imagination. The artists work in oil, acrylic, mixed media and watercolour on canvas, and one of the five will be at the gallery each day so you can have a chat and find out more about the inspiration behind the themes. Until 18 October. (And if you haven’t discovered Hop Gallery yet, it’s a delightful artspace located in the Star Brewery – where you’ll also find a variety of studios including the renowned Mohamed Hamid Pottery.) www.artymagazines.com Twitter @brightonsarty

LET ME TELL YOU NATHANIEL RATELIFF & THE A STORY... Some of the Brighton Comedy Festival’s NIGHT SWEATS coming attractions share a Brighton tale...
From folk singer to new soul sensation
Sarah Kendall – A Day In October, Brighton Dome, Studio Theatre, Sunday 18 October, £14.50/12.50 “One afternoon I was in Brighton, killing time before a gig. I was in a charity shop which had a box filled with old black and white photographs. The photos dated back to around the 1930s, pictures of people (who would now all be dead) at family gatherings, picnics, weddings, and other occasions. I couldn’t just walk out and leave all those people in that cardboard box. I bought fifteen photos, and I keep them with all my photos of my own family so they don’t get lonely or feel forgotten. I basically adopted a bunch of long-dead Brighton residents.”
our years ago, Rateliff appeared on Jools Holland, accompanied by just an acoustic and a backing singer, performing one of his many strident folk numbers that he was developing a cult following for. Roll on four years, and Rateliff – a former missionary worker – has transformed himself into a high energy soul and r'n'b singer, backed up with a sixpiece band that provides a tremendously powerful Stax meets Motown sound. His fortunes are quickly being transformed… "A lot more people like this" says Nathaniel over the line from Denver, his home town. "After touring a bunch as a singer songwriter – I love playing acoustic guitar, I was just tired of everyone else playing it – I had finished Falling Faster Than You Can Run (his 2013 album), I didn't have a label (he ended up releasing it himself), which was discouraging… I had wanted to do a soul, r'n'b thing for a long time, so I tried to write some songs after a friend of mine had suggested it. It kind of happened, it felt like a natural development." The result of those new songs is the new album, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, a raw and powerful piece that includes many southern soul and Motown style stompers
Sean Kelly – Live!, Brighton Dome, Corn Exchange, Saturday 17 October, 7.30pm, £16.50/14 “I will never forget the two days I spent in Brighton alone right after filming the final episode of Storage Hunters UK series 2 in nearby Petersfield. I decided last minute to go to Brighton, get a hotel on the beach and take a relaxing bicycle ride along the ocean. I went to hire a bicycle and all they had left was a weird bike called a triplet – it’s built for three riders. So with my heart set on riding a bike, I hire this thing. After riding along the ocean, I decide to ride into Brighton. I get stopped by a couple visiting from France who think I am some kind of bicycle tour guide of Brighton. So they ask me how much to give them the tour. I tell them 25 pounds each and they have to help peddle. They don’t even realize I am American and know less about Brighton than they do. I tour them around Brighton giving them made up historical facts. By the end they invited me to attend their wedding in France.” Hardeep Singh Kohli – Big Mouth Strikes Again, Brighton Dome, Studio Theatre, Friday 16 October, 7.30pm, £13/11 “A couple of years ago I was booked as a guest on the BBC’s Question Time. At the time I lived in London and it was taking place at Fort William in the Highlands of Scotland. I booked a flight up to Glasgow and dutifully jumped on the train to Gatwick. One hour later, I woke up just outside of Brighton, having fallen asleep and missed my stop. For quite some time I genuinely considered strolling down to the pier, tucking into some fish & chips and sacking off Question Time. That’s the draw of Brighton; once you are there, it’s tough to pull yourself away...” Brighton Comedy Festival listings are at www.brightoncomedyfestival.com

along with a few songs more in line with his previous work, albeit in keeping with the new direction. As fate would have it, Stax was re-activated in 2004 via its parent company, Concord Records, whom Rateliff subsequently signed to: "I was with a label who I didn't know were working with Stax, but I found out they owned the Stax imprint, and I was like, 'I think you could put this record out through Stax, it would be pretty apt, a southern soul sound'. They did, and now Rateliff has joined a long list of legends, including Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T & the M.G's and Isaac Hayes, who have been on the label. "The first gig we did with the Night Sweats was a little over two years ago, at a venue here in Denver. Somebody asked me to do a show, and I agreed, so I scrambled to get together a band, and it worked out. I think we had only 30 minutes of material, but it was really exciting to play that music for the first time. Everyone was hollering, and I started doing dance moves, and people loved it. surely served as an influence himself on Outpost’s bizarre sci-fi plot. The elaborate puppet drama revolved around an outpost between ‘Escobia’ and ‘Grud’ where guards Luis and BK bicker, and then get caught in a beautifully lit, mysterious underground cavern with aliens called ‘Ogoffs’. The political overtones regarding tolerance and othering were not too heavyhanded, although it was a little simplistic and the show might have benefited from more focus on tightening up the plot and script. Thankfully the performers were strong, the puppets well designed and the whole show intelligently, bewitchingly staged. The Old Market, 29 September 2015 Joe Fuller ★★★★
Unknown Mortal Orchestra Nothing puts toddlers off theatre like the words “keep still!” This show from Spanish company Imaginart actively embraces their physical energy and restless curiosity, as the children interact with images projected onto a white floor. These are engagingly cute and accessibly abstract: a family of ducks, spinning flowers, waves that wash ashore brightly coloured hearts. With gentle motions and warm smiles, the lone adult seems to be coaxing the animations to play – and the children naturally follow. A soundtrack of chilled orchestrals and 8-bit electronica, plus a little white suit for each participant, completes the immersive experience. If only more UK companies would learn that early years theatre isn’t all about bums on seats. The Old Market, 26 September 2015 Bella Todd ★★★★

Joe Orton would have hated this night. Here we have the British establishment, (middle class people from Eastbourne) laughing their socks off at his play. His play was designed to outrage the establishment and expose the hypocrisy of the British. He ruthlessly examines our attitude to acceptable and unacceptable perversions. His satirical swipes are just as affective today as they were over 40 years ago. What he created is no mere farce, but a parody of a farce. And it is delivered with breathless energy by a talented cast. A funny night out with a serious point to it. Devonshire Park Theatre, 29 September 2015 Martin Baron ★★★★

In one sentence, the set was mellow to the core but had flecks of artistic licence. To divulge, UMO flitted between their three records as if it was just one body of work. There was such an emphasis on the set as a whole and made the viewing experience spectaclelike. In particular, songs such as ‘Necessary Evil’ and ‘Ffunny Ffriends’ were stretched out and meddled with elements of jazz, which acted as hearty interludes between songs. But this riled some audience members who expected a track-to-stage replication in their performance. The majority did however really immerse themselves in the well orchestrated live rendition. The evening proved to be, and was crafted to be, a true entity of itself. Concorde 2, 22 September 2015 Abigail Hyland ★★★★★

THURSDAY 8 George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces Channel 4, 8pm The human imagination really is an incredible – if occasionally morbid – thing. This week George investigates not only a brand new Victorian bathing machine, and a communist-era lifeguard tower – but a hearse converted into a family camper van by a man who survived a coma. Whoa.
Unforgotten ITV1, 9pm Brand new six-part crime drama with a rather nifty looking cast list, including Trevor Eve in a role that isn’t a bad tempered but highly ranked copper who is brilliant but scuppers himself with his social histrionics. Get him! DCI Cassie Stuart and DS Sunil Khan reopen a cold case when a skeleton is discovered.
A Very British Romance With Lucy Worsley BBC4, 9pm The history of actual countrying – y’know, when marriage became less about business and more about those naughty and good fun hormones.
