CITY GIRL

IN THE CITY

VICTORIA NANGLE

Romesh Ranganathan – Irrational Crawley’s favourite grumpy comic has announced a massive tour next year. This is the show that would have arrived at the Edinburgh Fringe this year were Ranganathan not off filming Asian Provocateur for BBC3 this Summer. Bound to be a laugh, and if you miss this date catch him

ne weekend in November I am going to be doing all the things this fair city has on offer in a very hectic fashion. I know this because it is birthday season. Another birthday season. And three of my friends are celebrating on the same Saturday. So, to start off with it’s Brighton’s inaugural ComicCon that weekend. The streets will be paved with awesome costumes. I simply cannot wait to see James Masters adored by the Buffy-verse of Brighton & Hove, two Doctor Whos, the actual Greedo (who fired first?!), as well as a variety of authors, artists and generally colourful and stunningly attired folk. It will be glorious. And that’s my first birthday pal’s celebration. Sweet, eh? Come early afternoon it’s time for a different lot of superheroes to assemble. Meeting in town to embark on a trek across the stunning countryside that surrounds us. Seriously – how is it that we have the ultimate in escapism buzzing away at the Metropole Hotel and the most picturesque scenes from nature literally surrounding us on all sides? There will be orcs marauding the Downs before the day is out! Or maybe just West Street, but you get the idea. Our walk is set to take us from the centre of Brighton, over hill and dale – anyone know what a ‘dale’ is? – and conclude in nearby Lewes, renowned for fireworks, an old castle, and some very pretty shops and public houses. Cross your fingers the weather will hold out and we’ll have the perfect exhibition followed by expedition combo. And then, in the evening, back to Brighton for the kind of party our seaside town has become ever-so well known for: fancy dress. To be more precise, themed fancy dress. If you don’t see at least five people (stag and hen do’s don’t count) in outlandishly inexplicable gear on a Saturday night then you’re not in Brighton. A friend of mine got quite indignant when the teller at his local off license barely blinked when he arrived to purchase beer, framed with a full papier maché picture installation mounted around his head. They’ve seen it all. Don’t take it personally. So never mind four seasons in one day, I’ve got a taster board of Brighton in one weekend. And I haven’t even planned Sunday yet. www.filmandcomicconbrighton.com

SUGAR SUGAR am often asked if I have a sweet tooth. I have indeed got a sweet tooth which perfectly matches my savoury tooth, the bitter tooth, the sour tooth and if it comes to it my umami tooth. What I do not have is a full set of teeth. In the words of the great and so under-valued Pam Ayres – “Oh, I wish I’d looked after me teeth”. Yes there are gaps, and a crown and probably worse to come – and on the whole it must be down to sugar. I like sweet things, it’s one of the qualifications for doing this job I guess – but it does come with a down side, or indeed several down sides. One of them is the teeth, oh what havoc the sweet stuff plays with your gnashers, and second of course – the weight. I was not a chubby kid, I traversed the landscape of my teens as a slim person and my twenties were equally slender. It was when I hit my thirties that it started to pile on and that was when I started to earn a decent salary and developed my restaurant habit. I went from a size 30 inch waist in steady increments from that point on and before you ask, at that point I did still do a fair amount of exercise, cycling to and from Streatham and Mayfair every day, swimming most mornings and even running from my home around Streatham common and back before that ride to work. It may be hard to believe but it is true, although I will admit that the running was a short phase cut off when I was knocked down and left in a gutter by a rather rude driver. Grazed knees and a bad back put paid to my jogging exploits. So it had to be food and to be frank my rather extravagant taste in food. I have always loved sweeties too and in particular things like sherbet – which is after all just a bag of sour sugar. Last week I went to Brighton and Hove Council’s launch of a new campaign called Sugar Smart. It was a well run affair at which we were shown a very empassioned video by the very empassioned Mr Jamie Oliver about the harm that the amount of sugar in our diets is doing to us. Pretty compelling stuff it was too, with horrific details

mother and daughter Toni and Aaliyah stood up and spoke about the changes that they had made to their eating habits. Orange juice, I drink litres of the stuff but now I know that a finger width in a glass is about as much as I should drink in a day – who would have thought it, who? The campaign will include debates, kitchen garden projects and resources to help promote heath and wellbeing – and a good thing it is too and I will certainly be getting behind it in as many ways as I can. I may even shed a few pounds myself, sadly my lost teeth are but a memory now but I can work hard at trying to hang on to those that are left. What I would hate to see though is the demonisation of sugar to the point that it becomes a prohibited substance, a Class A drug! I was impressed by Jo Railing from the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation, and a Brighton resident. She clearly said that sweet treats are not to become forbidden pleasures, and I am sure she is right. Ban it and it will only create a black market! My personal view is that we have become a nation of grazers, snacking at will. Two members of our team here at Latest spend a great deal of time, and money, buying convenience foods to eat at their desks (you know who you are). Much of it not particularly healthy and much full of sugar. I am not innocent either, I snack and eat bad stuff, although after those amputation shots I will be thinking more seriously about whether I need that Sherbet Fountain. As a man with no kids I do not want to seem preachy, but I would suggest that we go back to the days when children would ask first before opening the biscuit tin or the fridge door. Let’s put the “please may I” question back into our vocabulary and in that way not only improve the health of future generations but also improve that good old fashioned concept of manners. To find out more about the Sugar Smart campaign go to www.brightonhove.gov.uk/sugarsmart

about the number of amputations that are carried out in the UK each year that are caused by Type 2 diabetes. It was thought-provoking stuff and certainly the evidence that one needs to see, that and the scary statistics shown for childhood obesity. I was heartened to see that here in Brighton and Hove that childhood obesity statistic is not as alarming as for most of the rest of the country but it is still pretty grim reading. Awareness is at the heart of the campaign and some of the material we were shown is extraordinary, the amount of sugar in a single can of sweet fizzy pop, in a chocolate snack and even in products that are heavily promoted as being a “healthy” choice. I for one would prohibit the use of the word healthy in the marketing of a food item unless it can be substantiated with hard evidence, but I would also ban the use of the word ‘gourmet’ in conjunction with the word burger, that’s just me! Sugar is everywhere, in vending machines attached to sports facilities and health clubs, hidden away in breads and sauces and savoury dishes as well as puddings – it’s nigh on impossible to avoid it. It’s also lurks in so many things that we think are a healthy alternative, like fruits and fruit juices. I was most impressed when channel 159 or at thelatest.tv

FRED MACAULAY THE INTERVIEW

VICTORIA NANGLE TALKS INDEPENDENCE, FEMINISM… & FARTS Hello Fred, how is this week treating you? It's been a good week. It's a mixture of writing and preparing for Edinburgh Fringe and a couple of days off. Just about to go walk our two dogs. So, your show description says that it’s looking at how Scotland will shape up after last year’s referendum. With the massive landslide victory for the SNP in Scotland being hailed as a move in the right direction by much of England, do you think Scotland might be open to annexing us down south as an alternative to independence? It's a serious question. There's no doubt that Cameron and Her Majesty were thrilled with the outcome of the referendum... and I reckon that was partly due to a likely rush to self determination for other pockets of the UK. Nicola Sturgeon has been in China this week. I believe the Communist Party hierarchy invited her out there to ask what it's like to have a one party state!

Photo: Andrew Ogilvy

Here in Brighton we responded to the general election with The People’s Republic Of Brighton & Hove – 16,000 likes on Facebook. What do you think to us being Scotland’s Rock Of Gibralta-style southern holiday destination via political alliance (just as a theory, as clearly I have no authority at all)? It's a good plan. Given the summer we've had up here, we could all do with a southern retreat. I was never great at geography... is Brighton South of the equator? Your show is also said to look at your own family life. As a comedian you must get lots of people trying to tell you stories “for your show”. Do your family ever bring you stories you have to let them down gently over? I usually run my lines past my wife. On many occasions she's added to routines, always making them stronger and funnier. As for other people, well we all get 'jokes' and get told we can use them. I'd love to finish a 90 minute gig with "... and a taxi driver told me I could use that".

I'd love to finish a 90 minute gig with ‘…and a taxi driver told me I could use that’

ago. North Korea has gone quiet for the time being, I'm guessing Kim Jong Un has found a girlfriend, he's found a girlfriend... he's found a gir... We've got Donald Trump leading the polls for The Republican nomination. Hilary Clinton was seen measuring the White House lawn for the cartwheels she'll be doing there if he actually does win the nomination. And at home, we're just waiting for the oil price to recover and to see how ugly the fight between Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon will be.

Do your family members ever second guess if something they’ve said or done will make it onto radio or your live shows (sorry, I’m making your homelife sound a bit like You’ve Been Framed)? No, I'll usually tell them if I'm working on a routine. It’s been a delight hearing you regularly on ‘The News Quiz’. and a shame that Sandi Toksvig’s leaving, but a marvellous reason why. How do you think Miles Jupp’s stepping up as chair in her place will change the tone, if at all? I'm delighted for Miles. I also think it's a great shout by BBC Radio 4. Obviously he'll bring a lot of his character to the gig, just as Sandi did. Sandi was very different from Simon (Hoggart) and I think that there'll be less of a difference between Sandi and Miles. Both are stage performers, principally as comedians, which Simon wasn't, so they're much more comfortable with round the table stuff.

There has been some discussion as to whether SNP MPs should have the right to vote on policies that only affect England, Wales or Northern Ireland. If you could propose three policies that could only apply to England, Wales or Northern Ireland, what would you suggest? 1) I'd make it illegal to wave your fists in the air in the House of Commons when welfare measures are being debated. 2) I'd make it compulsory for the people of England Wales and NI to have at least one week a year in Scotland. Then you'd understand why we moan so much. 3) I'd make it illegal to be Iain Duncan Smith (belt and braces for policy number 1 above).

You are very generous with your radio time. As well as your own show it’s been good hearing you play all of the regular supporting roles on ‘Bridget Christie Minds The Gap’. How much of a feminist were you before you got involved with Bridget’s show, and has anything in particular from the shows resonated with you more than the rest? It's not generosity... it's a living! I was SO pleased to get the Bridget gig. I like to think that my journey to Feminism has been longer and more arduous than anyone else who worked on the show, given my decades of Misogyny.

What was the last thing that made you laugh out loud? A fart. If you could have any superpower at all, what would you choose and why? To fart at will. We all need a laugh. Fred MacAulay: Twenty Fifteen, Studio, Brighton Dome, Wednesday 21 October 2015, 7.30pm, £15/13, www.brightoncomedyfestival.com

Getting back to the show, it’s called ‘2015’ – we’re only halfway through 2015 so what might you foretell for the rest of it? Who knows? On the world stage, we've got Putin at loggerheads with the G7 over Crimea and Ukraine. I don't like the resonances with 101 years watch on

A news reading shift was on the agenda plus we decided to air an idea that Mike had for a newspaper review show. A pilot was made and Latest TV were pleased with what was put together, thus The Newspapers review show was born and has been on air since day one. We are planning to start a new National Newspaper Review Show soon. Mike says; “I wanted to put together a show purely based on the local press, it works really well and I have been very lucky to attract a very good selection of ‘newspaper reviewers’. I designed the show on a similar format to that you will see on Sky News or the BBC – the only difference is no one is doing the 'locals' which makes us unique. It gives us a chance to talk about local issues that concern local people with local people commenting.” Mike goes on, “When I started at Latest TV I was going to read the news just a couple of days a week, but as time went on I started to do

COMMUTABLE WILL HARRIS

GET ON BOARD BRIGHTON & HOVE BUSES

Will reveals how he became one of the Brighton to London commuting mélange

Discover hidden gems such as Ashdown Forest on the outskirts of the city s autumn is upon us and the seasons are changing, why not catch a bus to one of the numerous beautiful golden brown spaces that you can explore in Sussex? We’ve highlighted a couple of our favourites for you below. Head up to Stanmer Park, one of Brighton’s hidden gems located just on the outskirts of the city. Filled with beautiful woodland walks and extensive open lands, Stanmer is perfect for family, friends and explorers alike. Whilst the park provides wonderful natural vistas, Stanmer Village and Stanmer Church demonstrate historical architecture amid the greenland. And to top it all off, the singular landmark of the park is Stanmer House, a Palladian mansion standing for over 100 years, recently restored with a pub and restaurant. Routes 23, 25 and 5B call at the entrance of the park, whereas route 78 takes you right through to its heart. And if you’re looking to really escape into nature, Ashdown Forest is a beautiful slice of wilderness and rural living that lies between Brighton and Tunbridge Wells. Ashdown Forest is home to a fascinating ecological culture, having been a hunting ground in the past and now common land for numerous types of residents contributing to the preservation of the land. The vast area has become a refuge for many threatened species of wildlife, including the rare, renowned nightjar and Dartford warbler (and if you’re so inclined, even Winnie-the-Pooh!). Route 29 skirts along the south east edge of the forest – you can either glimpse the vibrant wildlife as you go by or step off and journey on one of the managed pathways into the woodlands. Our buses head to places like these and many more throughout the picturesque South Downs National Park – head over to our website at www.buses.co.uk to see what amber hued locations you can visit next

Stanmer is perfect for family, friends and explorers alike

t’s Friday evening in W1, work is over for another week, and I am carousing in the courtyard of Soho House with a broadsheet journalist of my acquaintance. Well, I say carousing. What we’re actually doing is flicking through Google images of bulldog puppies while she coos appreciatively and I make noises like I’m going to be sick. “You can’t have a dog in that flat,” I say (that flat being a newly purchased one-bed on the Kingsland Road, which she has already packed to the rafters with books, chaise-longues, and recently, a boy). “It’s cruel.” “I can have a dog in that flat actually,” she replies. “Look, they’re only little. See. This one is in a watering can.” This is not about the flat. What I’m really saying is I don’t want her to have a dog at all, which in any case is only a proxy baby for urbanites who want something to show off about on Instagram but can’t be bothered to get up in the middle of the night. Having a dog means settling down. Having a dog means we’re not kids any more. “Can’t you get a cat?” I say. “Can’t you move back to London?” She swaggers at me from behind her champagne, for she knows she has hit kryptonite. If inviting a four-legged friend into your life is a symbol of maturity, then following a two-legged one to Brighton is getting dangerously close to middle age. When my partner of two years accepted a training post at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, I had a choice. I could stay in London, paying exorbitant rent for the privilege of being within spitting distance of a decent John Lewis, or I could move with him to Brighton, and pay exorbitant train fares to have exactly the same privilege, but confined to a 10-hour window. Minus work. Plus love. “How is the commute?” probes my friend. “Is it killing you?” The honest truth is that it isn’t, not really. Flying in the face of the old adage ‘tired of London, tired of life’, leaving London has been surprisingly easy to do, and I suspect a large reason for that ease has been my commute. The trains mostly leave on time, the 4G mostly holds out throughout the Sussex Weald, and a daily fix of capital life helps keep the worst of the shakes at bay (were it not for my commute, I’d be going cold seagull). Except of course on nights like tonight, with the wine flowing, and the devil in my ear, and every doorway of the city lit up and alive with possibility. On nights like this, it’s easy for a commuter to feel like a south-bound Cinderella, one eye on the clock, the other on the National Rail app, as your friends or co-workers surrender themselves to the joy of not knowing where the night will take them. There is only one place my night is taking me. And it leaves at 20.24.

How many Christmases in rapid succession can involve death, betrayal and incest on the same square/street/farm

Chaula’s Brighton

watch on

s a rule I have always preferred watching American drama on TV. I think it's because I was brought up with the likes of Casualty, Holby City, The Bill, London's Burning. Then there's the god-awful soaps that Britain churns out – EastEnders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale. I know they're regarded as national treasures but seriously – how many Christmases in rapid succession can involve death, betrayal and incest on the same square/street/farm? But every now and then I am tantalised by something very British, very gritty and very well marketed (it must be if it takes my particular fancy). My current ‘thing’ is Doctor Foster. It's four episodes into its five episode run and is magnificent. It's carried pretty much singlehandedly by Doctor F herself (played by Suranne Jones), whose portrayal of Gemma Foster is so bitingly real that it's all I can do from reaching into the TV set and giving her a cuddle. The husband's annoying. The kid playing the son is good. The woman playing Gemma's doctor friend is pretty odd (I can't tell if the actress means to play her slightly peculiarly or not). But overall the feel to the show is gritty and honest. There's something about watching TV about marriages falling victim to affairs that has always gripped me. I remember years ago watching Other People's Children with morbid curiosity. Perhaps its because I come from a broken home and I am drawn into the comforting embrace of marital and parental betrayal. Or perhaps I just enjoy watching wives get their own back on opportunistic mistresses. I digress. It's this kind of television that Britain does best. The soaps are fine for bit of ridiculousness over your spaghetti carbonara dinner and an evening dose of predictable writing and bad acting; but I do find that when a proper dramatic series appears on our TVs, usually on the BBC, ITV or Channel 4, then we are most probably about to witness something good. Unless its Poldark. But bare-chested rippling muscles scything wheat aside – most contemporary dramas are well made here in the UK. So Doctor Foster has discovered that her husband is a cheat because she noticed a single strand of blonde hair on his scarf. Oh and chapstick in his pocket. Slightly ridiculous really, given that the hair could be from a horse’s mane and the chapstick could be a product of shoplifting from Boots, but in this case she is right to suspect he is having his way with the local blonde. Now she's gone rogue and is bribing patients with sleeping pills, and accountants with sex, in order to catch hubby out. She's a cunning type and always seems to be walking around with scissors. But whatever happens, I do think she'll use them to snip at her husband. Here's to a fulfilling conclusion where she slaps the mistress and runs off with the butcher.

ANDREW KAY DINES OUT

ZILLI SEASON AT CICCHETTI hope you don’t mind but this week I am taking you to London and to Covent Garden. I do this because I know that so many of us will be in London and will want to eat out. Over the years I have filed reviews from so many far flung countries in the knowledge that you are a sophisticated bunch who would like to know about hot dining spots around the globe – as well of course as down here in Sussex. I happened to be going to the Royal Opera House to see a new production of Orphée et Euridyce that was codirected by Hofesh Shecter, a familiar name to Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival fans. It was a Sunday Matinee so Mr L and I decided to make a bit of a day of it and have lunch first. At his suggestion we went along to Cicchetti in Wellington Street, there are other branches but this was less than a minute from the opera house so ideally located. The executive chef for the San Carlo Cicchetti brand is my old friend Aldo Zilli. I first ate his food at Signor Zilli in Soho, an exemplary linguini with hare sauce. Then again when he opened Zilli in Brighton which sadly did not last long despite serving the best squid dish I had tasted in many a year, perhaps only bettered by the squid in vermouth served at La Famiglia in Chelsea many moons ago. Cicchetti is as bright and buzzy as a Versace tie, all marble and gilt with very smart and very handsome waiters in high collared mess jackets – all very impressive. The menu is all about sharing, a sort of Italian take on tapas – but I have to say, served in far more generous portions than some of the deeply unsatisfactory tapas joints that have emerged over the years, where the word is employed to mean tiny. Our waiter advised that five dishes would probably be sufficient, took our orders for two glasses of wine that had plenty of choices of wines by the glass – and left us to ponder. It was not a difficult task and as well as the full menu there was a carte of specials. Mr L had been before so for once I let him drive – and I have to say it was a pleasure to be the passenger for once. I spend far too much time choosing for people. And having been before there were dishes he wanted to try again – thus a plate of rabbit. When I say plate of rabbit what I should say is boned and rolled rabbit wrapped in pancetta and stuffed with Italian spicy sausage with radicchio

on the side. It was brilliant, the rabbit sweet, the stuffing spicy, the bacon salty and the radicchio, braised and slightly scorched deeply bitter. It was a triumphant forkful of contrasting flavours and textures and generous to boot. Next a plate of ravioli, black with squid ink and filled with soft crab meat, all dressed with a rich bisque dotted with tiny and intensely flavoured shrimps and roasted cherry tomatoes. I love tiny shrimps, I love crab and I love well made bisque, again another huge hit. Pumpkin risotto next, served in a roasted half pumpkin. It was luscious, velvety smooth and packed with flavour –and that was just the risotto. Perched atop was a parmesan tuile bejewelled with pink pepper berries like an Ascot hat, and smuggled below that hat some shaved truffle. We both raved about it, it was rich and deeply satisfying. As was our final savoury dish, three large blue cheese gnocchi in a glossy sauce and yet more of that sexy shaved truffle. Are truffles sexy? I think so, which might say as much about my private life as it does about the food. Our impeccable waiter suggested that we might enjoy our sharing platter of desserts. I wasn’t of a mood to argue and said why not. It arrived looking like yet another hat, this time definitely by David and for Mrs Shilling (look it up!). A flamboyant retro affair, all frills and fancies and very welcome too with a first class pistacchio cake, tiramisu and panna cotta. I was in heaven and will certainly return. roduced by Theatre Royal Bath Productions, Joshua Harmon’s searing comedy has delighted audiences and critics alike since its UK Premiere in July 2014. This family drama enjoyed a sell out run at London’s St James Theatre in January and a subsequent West End transfer to the Arts Theatre including an additional six weeks of performances added due to demand for tickets. Bad Jews is set in New York where a beloved grandfather – a Holocaust survivor – has just died, and a treasured family heirloom with religious significance is up for grabs. But who is most deserving of it? Bossy, overbearing, fanatically religious Daphna? Her wealthy cousin Liam, who’s just returned from skiing with his non-Jewish girlfriend Melody? Or Jonah, his brother, who would prefer not to get involved in the fight? A Manhattan apartment becomes the location for a viciously hilarious brawl over family, faith and legacy as the contenders set at each other’s throats on the night after the funeral. ver the past six years, since the Brighton’s Arty brand was conceived after one too many round in The Eagle on Gloucester Road, we’ve been privileged to get to know an amazing variety of wonderful local creatives. And what’s fascinating is seeing their work constantly evolving and diversifying year after year. So it wasn’t a surprise to discover that Monika Jakimauskaite is turning her talents to designing accessories, taking the same mixed media approach that she applies to her highly original artworks. With a fashion designer mother, and her father an Monika Jakimauskaite actor and semiprofessional photographer, Monika grew up in Lithuania surrounded and influenced by textiles, photography and culture. Now based in Brighton, she combines photography and textiles to create captivating mixed-media artworks. Applying photographic prints to fabric, Monika embellishes with embroidery and appliqué, extending details from the image onto the fabric to create perspective or add ornamental touches. Her current colour palette is simple and minimalistic, dominated by pastels and black and white. Monika has recently started designing handbags, using the same original mixed-media approach. She adds buttons and textile paints to her creations, producing unique and striking results on beautiful accessories for everyday use. The bags feature different designs on each side, giving a choice of ways to wear them. O

ast year was a busy year as far as gardening was concerned. Outside we have four very large, raised beds that were totally overgrown. The students were brilliant at weeding and digging over the raised beds, getting them ready for planting. We also roped in some parents and younger brothers and sisters to help too. Some of the beds have been used for the Natural Cosmetic Beauty Range Project where we have planted scented flowers and berries. One of my aims is to eventually establish a tea plantation. It can be done; there was one at Unilever Research in Bedford where I use to work. For the rest of the beds we planted vegetables. The seeds were kindly donated by our receptionist Bernie and her husband. Furthermore, Jigsaw Gardening donated the gardening tools. We linked up with the homeless charity Crossover who run a street kitchen. Crossover have this to say: “we are local people passionate about providing food and support, where feasible, to the homeless and needy in Brighton and the surrounding area.” The other day we started to harvest our crop. Crossover came to collect the produce and what a lot there was too! I have to say I was very surprised with our haul. We took a permaculture type approach to growing the vegetables. We carried out minimal weeding and didn’t use any chemical pest control. The crops that did the best were root vegetables such as carrots and beetroots, where we just scattered the seeds across the ground. Annoyingly though we lost the entire crop of broad beans to black fly so we will have to come up with some solutions for next time. This is what the Permaculture Association has to say about Permaculture: Permaculture combines three key aspects: 1 An ethical framework 2 Understandings of how nature works, and 3 A design approach This unique combination is then used to support the creation of sustainable, agriculturally productive, non-polluting and healthy settlements. In many places this means adapting our existing settlements. In other cases it can mean starting from scratch. Both offer interesting challenges and opportunities. The word 'permaculture' comes from 'permanent agriculture' and 'permanent culture' – it is about living lightly on the planet, and making sure that we can sustain human activities for many generations to come, in harmony with nature. So we have started to cover some of these permaculture principles but wouldn’t it be great if all schools across the UK grew fruit and vegetables for the homeless! Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) is a college offering sixth form, 11-16 years, youth centre, adult learning, community education, sports centre and pre-school. Brighton Early Music Festival unearths valuable contributions from women

FilmFest on TV Halloween Special

t was previously thought that a woman's role in early music was either domestic or as theatrical singers, but research over the last few decades has cast their contribution in a new light. Artistic Directors Clare Norburn and Deborah Roberts mention in their brochure introduction for example that composers such as Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre were "fully professional and highly revered women in receipt of high salaries, or living from the proceeds of their publications". This research has led to 2015's Brighton Early Music Festival theme

I

Haunting a cappella choral music leaves an ethereal impression on you

of women (as creators, enquirers, muses, enchanters). De La Guerre's work will be performed by the London Handel Players featuring the superb, renowned soprano Ruby Hughes (winner of the 2009 London Handel Singing Competition and a previous BBC New Generation Artist). You can hear the Judith cantata on Youtube and the prominence of the harpsichord and singing style are a good example of the early music style if you haven’t heard any before. In fact, if you're new to classical music then early music is a good style to try out in general since it's often fairly accessible and melodic, particularly compared to modern classical. (St George's Church, Saturday 31 October, 7.30pm) The Orlando Consort are presenting a new soundtrack to Carl Theodor Dreyer's classic film La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc, including music from the era such as Guillaume Dufay and also plainsong. Such haunting a cappella choral music has a clear passion in it and leaves a stark, ethereal impression on you in a live setting. (St George's Church, Friday 30 October, 7.30pm) One of the concerts I'm most excited about involves "trance and meditation in an Italian renaissance" which was enough to pique my interest straight away. Three different choirs will be evoking the mood of 16th century Ferrara, including some first modern performances discovered through research by Musica Secreta. It might sound daft or superfluous to go on about venues when the music is obviously the most important thing, but I'm often surprised when long-term Brighton residents haven't been in St Bartholomew's Church before. It's a stunning building and choral music sounds fantastic there, so this is a great opportunity to visit while hearing some music for the first time in hundreds of years. (St Bartholomew's Church, Saturday 24 October, 7.30pm) There are a lot more brilliant looking events at the festival; I've highlighted some picks from the first half of the programme here and will discuss later shows in a future column. I've been to a lot of BREMF shows myself and the high quality performances of sublime music is striking. It makes for some truly different and atmospheric nights out. Go to www.bremf.org.uk to find out more about the rest of the programme and book tickets. Tickets are available at a broad range of prices, from £5 for standing or restricted view prom tickets on the door.

STAGE ANDREW KAY BALLET HIGH! Three classics from the Russian State Ballet and Opera House at Eastbourne’s Congress Theatre rom the rich and ancient culture of Astrakhan on the banks of the Volga River, the renowned and highly acclaimed Russian State Ballet and Opera House returns to the Congress Theatre with three new enchanting ballets to captivate and delight the whole family. First the Tchaikovsky favourite Swan Lake, featuring some of ballet’s most memorable music. An all-time classic, the story overflows with evocative orchestrations and breath-taking dance. There are few scores more successful in supporting the full range of ballet than those by Tchaikovsky. The romance and verve with which Tchaikovsky infused classical dancing makes his scores unsurpassed, masterpieces, not only in terms of music but also of theatre. The story tells of a princess who is turned into a swan by an evil curse. The spectacular choreography allows the company’s dancers to demonstrate their brilliant skills to full effect. The twinned role of the pure White Swan and the scheming, duplicitous Black Swan tests the full range of a ballerina’s powers, particularly in the two great Pas de Deux. Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting. When one of the swans turns into a beautiful woman he is instantly captivated – will his love prove strong enough to break the evil spell that she is under? Highlights of the ballet include the charming Dance of the Little Swans performed on the shores of a moonlit lake as well as sweeping ballroom waltzes set in the splendour of the Royal Palace. Swan Lake is full of mystery and romance and has captured the imagination of generations over the years. This production offers an opportunity for ballet lovers to see Swan Lake performed by an established

and renowned theatre company that has won many awards and is considered to be one of the best in Russia. The second performance in the annual Russian State Ballet tour will be the eternal seasonal favourite The Nutcracker, directed and choreographed by former Bolshoi Theatre Ballet dancer Konstantin Uralsky. The Christmas story is based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King written by E.T.A. Hoffmann. It tells the story of Marie, a sad little girl, whose godfather Drosselmeyer gives her a Nutcracker doll as a present on Christmas Eve which turns into a prince, and the magic begins… A highly accessible ballet, full of familiar music such as The Spanish Dance, The Arabian Dance, The Russian Dance, The Chinese Dance, The Waltz of the Flowers and the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Featuring an impressive cast and accompanied by a large live orchestra with over 30 musicians the Russian State Ballet and Opera House annual visit to the Congress is always a joy to behold and the company has ensured that classical ballet remains just as spellbinding today as it was when it was performed 120 years ago. The Nutcracker is an enchanting feast for the eyes, and an ideal introduction to the magic and romance that is classical ballet. Audiences young and old are sure to find this production irresistible. Third in the run is the adventurous Don Quixote. Don Quixote is based on episodes from the famous novel by Cervantes. Quixote himself delights in stories of brave knights, fabulous giants and other fantastical creatures. But most of all, he dreams of his beloved Dulcinea, a woman that he believes to be so lovely and noble that she must be divine. His reveries are of their romantic adventures. When Don Quixote notices Kitri, the inn-keeper’s daughter, he acclaims her as his Dulcinea, whom evil magicians have reduced to human form. He is then confronted by numerous unexpected situations, tricks and challenge duels. As he approaches the windmills he can no longer see the moon and thinks that evil magicians have hidden his beloved mistress. So, spear in hand, he tilts at the sails of the windmill, which he mistakes for a giant! Alas, he is caught by one of the sails and flung into the air. He falls unconscious at his ever-faithful servant Sancho Panza’s feet. These new productions are directed and choreographed by former Bolshoi Theatre dancer, Konstantin Uralsky, who has been creating ballets for more than twenty years. Now, as the company’s Artistic Director, he will bring his unique style and talent to the performances. Jane Weaver – Cosmic folk songstress is back in Brighton iverpool born, and Manchester based, Jane Weaver has been making music since the Britpop era, beginning with indie hopefuls Kill Laura, and then folktronica project Misty Dixon. As a solo artist since the late 90s, she has developed a cult following with her take on psychedelic folktronica, adhering to a DIY approach since getting burned by her earlier major label experiences. Last year's The Silver Globe album, her sixth, features contributions from long-time friend Badly Drawn Boy, and David Holmes, and is a concept album of sorts, about the possible futures for artists and musicians, while her Bird label (an offshoot of her husband Andy Votel's Twisted Nerve label) is gaining a reputation for releasing quality psych folk releases by women.

liked magic mushrooms… It's such a great record, I never tire of it. It's a journey from start to finish! I started working on a song and then included a chunk of Star Cannibal. I was far more nervous speaking to Dave Brock (Hawkwind's lead singer) than Chris Martin!

Coldplay sampled one of your songs (Silver Chord). Did they seek permission? Yes they did, although I think it was pretty last minute... They'd already

been using it live and had recorded the album. It's no big deal really, I think some people expected me to say ‘no’ because it's maybe not my cup of tea being so commercial. But I'm no Coldplay hater. I see you also included a Hawkwind sample, and that you are a dedicated fan. In my late teens I listened to a lot of rock music, some of this included space rock and Hawkwind. Church of Hawkwind was recommended to me by a local hippy guy years ago who

How do you feel about the cosmic folk songstress tag? Well, anything sounds better than 'singer songwriter', I hate that tag more than anything. I would love to look like Stacia from Hawkwind and sound like Kate Bush, so I suppose that's pretty cosmic.

What attracted you to making music and performing? I saw Kate Bush on TV when I was five and that was it. She made such an impression on me as soon as I got the opportunity to form a band in my late teens I started gigging and recording.

ish Kumar – Long Word, Long Word, Blah Blah Blah... I'm so clever, Brighton Dome, Studio, Saturday 24 October, £10 “There was once a brilliant comedy show in Brighton (on 24th October 2015 at the Brighton Dome) by a handsome comedian called Nish Kumar. Everyone who went to see it agreed that it was the best show they had ever seen and that going to it had improved their lives beyond recognition. Everyone who didn’t see it agreed that they had missed the greatest moment in the history of Brighton and they all worked together to invent a time machine so they could go back and undo their great error. And they did and then everyone lived happily ever after.”

The Prince was the first person to ride a bicycle in Brighton, in June 1812, which was greeted with polite applause except from a drunken teenage lad on a stag-do from London who shouted: ‘Oi look at that poser on his Dick Van Dyke’. When people ask if I want to stay in Brighton now I just put on a Madness instrumental backing track, and sing ‘It must be Hove, Hove, Hove. It must be Hove, Hove Hove. (Yes, I am really doing this). MIKE WARD AT LARGE

REVIEWS

THE MAX FACTOR on’t laugh, but I've taken to wearing a cap. In fact, I've taken to wearing three, albeit not at once. One black, one green, one grey. Sometimes I even wear my cap indoors, which I used to think was the sign of an absolute grade-one prat. Come to think of it, that's probably what I still think. It's just I don't seem to care now. I started wearing a cap for practical reasons. I have what's politely called a "high forehead" which means I burn quite easily in that region and can end up being mistaken for a giant lollipop. I'd tried other headgear before, but somehow it had never felt right. I have a good friend who regularly wears pork-pie hats and such like, and I believed for a while that this was a look I could copy. It wasn't. I looked like an utter nincompoop. You need a certain selfbelief, or preferably a certain swagger, to routinely wear that kind of headgear, and sadly I possess neither. My wife and daughter just pointed and laughed. But they're OK with the cap, and so am I. It feels casual and understated, reasonably non-showy. Plus it's really comfy. When I do end up wearing it indoors, it's usually because I've forgotten I've got it on. Also, as my hair is not only thinning but greying, a cap is a nice way of diverting people's attention from this. I don't want to go down the route of actually disguising the grey with hairdye, because I'm not a tragically narcissistic jerk, so a jauntily placed cap seems a socially acceptable compromise. As I say, I have three. The one I wear least is the green, which is waxed. I save this for rainy days out with dog, or simply for days when I wish to be mistaken for Prince Philip. We all have those, right? The grey is made of a thicker, more woolly material, so that's for when it gets nippy. And the black? Well, the black, a lightweight cotton, has become my everyday cap, to the point where I must admit it's starting to look a bit grubby. Just one key style point, by the way. These two favourite caps of mine aren't just cheap affairs. They're forty-quid-apop Fred Perrys. I'm not sure they're necessarily made any better than the significantly cheaper ones you can get from that guy in Kensington Gardens, but they do have the Fred Perry logo on the side. And that sends out a vital signal. It tells people I have style. Mind you, since the rest of my clothes are M&S, they'll have figured that out already. Die Fledermaus, Theatre Royal Brighton, 6 October 2015, ★★★★★ Ellen Kent has created an intriguing new interpretation of the popular operetta by translating a Russian version into English and the result was fantastic. There were some truly funny scenes, including a newly discovered lament from Eisenstein about how he is to be unjustly incarcerated for shooting his gamekeeper (played with skillful comic timing by Ruslan Zinevich). Vladimir Dragos (a veteran Kent baritone) was hilarious playing an overthe-top staggering drunk prison guard and there was also superb singing throughout. Maria Tonina was a real crowd-pleaser as Adele with a clear soprano tone and strong pronunciation, all the more important when singing in the audience's mother tongue. There was a light, boozy atmosphere about the show and the crowd which made for a distinctly memorable evening, and a refreshing change for those already familiar with the work. Joe Fuller

James Bay, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 5 October 2015, ★★★★★ With Bay being known as an up and coming star in the UK it was no surprise that he was nothing short of amazing. There were almost five minute guitar solos between songs, a charm and personality about him, and he seemed to love every minute of it just as much as the crowd did. It takes a special singer/songwriter to have the crowd singing every word of most of their songs start to finish and James managed to achieve that. Having busked in Brighton in his early years he has some very special memories here and that made the experience even better. He was backed by a band of very talented musicians who were also fantastic and special credit is due to the keyboardist who provided a mind blowing solo during a cover of 'If I Ain't Got You'. Like every live show it's good to mix up the tempo a bit during the set and that is exactly what happened, bringing the crowd almost to a standstill and getting them straight back up again to the same excitable mood. . Ryan Chambers

Material Men & Strange Blooms – Shabana Jeyasingh Dance Brighton Dome, Corn Exchange, 6 October 2015, ★★★★ This double bill began with an explosive electronic crash and then eight androgynous dancers responded to the throbbing chords and harpsichord riffs of Gabriel Prokofiev’s loud music. A quote from Darwin and occasional laser imagery related this to the cellular life of plants, the strange blooms. The frenetic movement of bodies required tremendous precision and trust. In ‘Material Men’, Sooraj Subramaniam and Shailesh Bahoran danced in contrasting styles to Elena Kats-Chernin’s music, performed live by The Smith Quartet and Leafcutter John. This too was loud. Subramaniam presented variations of classical Indian forms while Bahoran’s dance relies more on visceral strength. Andrew Connal

FRIDAY 16 TFI Friday Channel 4, 8pm Is it the 90s again? Chris Evans is kicking off the nation’s breakfasts every morning on the radio, he’s back on the telly as the anchor for the next series of Top Gear, and here he is in the middle of the melee that is TFI Friday, with some of the top names in entertainment guesting. Dig out the glow sticks, man...

NCIS: New Orleans Channel Five, 9pm Like a Tennessee Williams play without the anguish, and with grit exchanges for grits, it’s always fun to see this Southern fried popular drama return to our small screens. Y’all. This week it’s taking Southern hospitality in hand, as a Navy recruiter is killed and the gang try to discover if it’s connected to her fostering work.

SATURDAY 17 It Was Alright In The 1990s Channel 4, 9pm Some of this was over 20 years ago! How time flies when you’re bopping, having indie band wars and ruling Britannia as the Union Jack tried again to conquer the world – this time as the must have fashion accessory. Matt Lucas narrates and the clips come aplenty with talking heads feeling old and reminiscing.

FILM: Drive BBC2, 10.45pm This stylish action crime thriller has Ryan Gosling looking cooler than a penguin that’s become best friends with James Dean, Marlon Brando and Marilyn Monroe – and left them wanting more. He’s a stunt driver by day and lends his skills to less legitimate employers by night. But is distracted by a lady.

FILM: Zoolander Film4, 7.15pm A marvellous spoof of the fashion industry, with a sequel on the books in the very near future. Ben Stiller stars as the intellectually challenged male model in whose hands it lies to save the world from an evil conspiracy cooked up by a maniacal fashion designer. Cameos galore and good fun.

SUNDAY 18 The X Factor ITV1, 7pm Oh my giddy aunt! It’s the last of the ever so tense and dramafilled Six Chair Challenges. Not that the booming accompanying music – that would give Harry Potter a run for its money in generating drama – has anything to do with that, of course. It’s Simon in the hot seat, and the hopefuls on the edge of theirs.

Homeland Channel 4, 9pm So, Carrie’s resettled in Berlin and is away from the danger? No! We addressed this last week when the new series kicked off. Keep up! All manner of shenanigans are bound to be whirring around her, because she’s Carrie. She and During visit a refugee camp, and Saul and Alison are at odds.
