CITY GIRL

IN THE CITY

VICTORIA NANGLE rigins are funny old things. What went through the mind of the first musician who made that much-sampled high-pitched ‘whoop’ noise and decided it would go really well on their next track? I just like to imagine the discussion that ensued as they pushed their idea against the tide of “You-stepped-on-a-catmate” from friends and colleagues. “No,” they would patiently explain, “I think this would punctuate well just how strongly I feel at an emotive level about this bit of the song.” And the gathered arguing masses would still not be convinced but would give it a shot to humour the boss. There are so many gloriously ridiculous things we just don’t think twice about these days. Giant chocolate buttons. Who are we trying to kid? So, they’re small drops of a chocolate bar that’ll fit into small hands... but made bigger for big hands so that we feel small again. Just call it a second childhood, eat a Yorkie and have done with it. And then try one of those freaky new chocolate bars with popping candy in them because it’s just too much bother to eat two kinds of sweets in two separate ways. And we love a childhood callback. Or I do at least. I’ve always found that if I don’t know a reason for a thing then I make one up, and before long I believe it. The reason people say ‘touch wood’ is because the Devil will hear you tempting fate with your affirmative statements, and the only way to shoo him is to touch something from nature and he’ll go into that instead of being around you. No one told me that. I made it up. And then forgot that I made it up. You should’ve seen the weird looks I got as I voiced this explanation as a teenager having thought my grandmother had told it to me, rather than remembering that I’d created it out of my runaway imagination. And now it’s an origin story for about half a dozen people who I never updated on the story. New schemes and ideas kick off and circulate all the time. They swim in the ether of the world, some of them disappear and others rise to prominence and become accepted without question as a ‘whoop’ that all right-thinking music-lovers embrace. And so it should be. But every now and again, it does a brain good to stop and reflect where it all really came from.

thelatest.tv f you haven’t seen my telly show yet, where the hell have you been? We’re up to sixteen episodes now, which is longer (but admittedly, not as good) than Fawlty Towers. So respect, where respect is due please. If you haven’t seen it, it’s on Friday nights on Latest TV at 7pm and if you miss that because that ‘drink after work’ turned in to a binge, then you get a second shot the following night at 7.30pm. Wondering why viewers are dropping for X Factor? Well, now you know. So let me give you a little taster as to what the show is all about. It’s a show that tackles life. Heavy, eh? Let me break that down for you. Each week, I explore two subjects that have some impact or affect our lives in some ways. Previous topics have covered subjects as diverse as love, pets, public transport and public displays of affection. I explore these subjects by giving my own views and sharing my experiences on said subject, I then go out and talk to the general public and get their views and I play out some weird and wonderful YouTube clips relevant to

DIGITAL NATION

I

that subject. So that’s the format. It’s a halfhour show, with an interval that allows you to relieve yourself and stock up on refreshments. It has everything and it caters to your needs. So coming up on this week’s episode, I’m looking at religion and hobbies. Religion’s a tricky one. I’ll try and keep it light but let’s face it, we’re going to get some varied views on this contentious subject. Personally, even though I’m not watch on

REALLY GREAT BRITAIN I’m fascinated by people’s hobbies and pastimes

religious myself, I can see why religion gives people a sense of purpose and why a faith is so important to so many people around the world. Out of all the religions, I probably identify with Buddhism the most, as it is based mainly on the self and how we can improve as human beings and support one another. I’ve taken certain practices from this, such as meditation and found it very useful. However, I can also see how religion can become extreme and out of that, there can be great pain and suffering. You only have to look at the world’s history and what is going on today, to see that. So it will be interesting to see how the show develops when exploring this. Secondly, I’ll be looking at hobbies. I’m fascinated by people’s hobbies and pastimes. I read a story recently about a man who had kept a diary of his lawn-mowing exploits for most of his life. Yes, it would most likely have been a very dull read but I love passion and I love commitment and so, even without meeting him, I love this man. He’s totally dedicated to diarising his grass-cutting and I really admire that. If I’m honest, I’m probably quite jealous of lawnmower man. At least he has a hobby. I don’t. have loads. My first memory of a hobby was writing and illustrating comics when I was eight. I then moved in to birdwatching, then ghost hunting and then I became a private detective, trying to solve the mysteries of the village I grew up in, in eighties Nottinghamshire. In my twenties, my main hobby outside of work was partying. This went on for a long time. Then I got a serious job and a job I really love and I haven’t had a serious hobby since. Yes, I have the odd game of football, I might go to the cinema occasionally, I go to see lots of live music but I want a proper hobby. A nerdy hobby. I hope to find one during Friday’s show. See you then.

here’s plenty to tickle your brain and pique your curiosity going on all over the country. So Digital Nation’s collection of some of the most intriguing, entertaining and even downright touching from Latest TV’s national contemporaries – as well as the odd story that you may have missed from Brighton’s own channel – is a fragrant bouquet of blooms gathered up to charm every discerning eye. Brightonians may think that they

lead the way in eco-technology but it hasn’t always been so. STV Glasgow’s David Farrell steps into the first ever electric car, known simply as the Scamp. Launched in 1967 at the Ideal Home Exhibition in London, it was a great idea but without quite the technology we have today to back it up. David finds out a bit more about the car’s history and rocky road tests. Lord Richard Attenborough takes centre stage in a clip from Latest TV, casting an eye over the Sussex University’s tribute to its former chancellor who made such a major impact on the entertainment industry for much of the twentieth century. With access to rare personal photographs that span the decades, leant by Lord Attenborough’s family, this glimpse is a real treat. Local football pride is a universal truth, from the Seagulls at home to Nottingham’s devotion to Forest.

SOME DAY MY PLINTH…

maquettes of the winning entries. Each of the winners will see their work commissioned and placed on the plinth for between 12 and 18 months. After which a permanent site within the city will be sought for them to go on permanent display. There was a buzz of excitement as each was revealed and first out was Escape by Matthew James Davies. His cast clear blue resin work is a sinuous twist of vibrant light filled joy, a celebration of movement made still. It was easy to imagine how beautiful it will look set against the changing skies and seascapes of Hove seafront. Whilst a solid form, it breathes an energy that could be seen as waves or as soaring starlings in a triumphant murmuration… Next came Flight of the Langoustine by Pierre Diamantopoulo, inspired by a lobster pot wrecked by a stormy sea. His work, an enormous broken grill is penetrated by athletic human forms escaping to something beyond. There is a real energy to this and from the maquette it would appear to be truly monumental in scale. Final Constellation by Jonathan Wright, which looks not unlike an orary into which iconic symbols of Hove have crashed. Those symbols chosen in consultation with Hove residents I believe. Perhaps my least favourite in maquette form it will no doubt be a work of ongoing development and still has much to admire. I really look forward to seeing all three and hope that this will continue beyond those three and become an ongoing project. Of course to do this funds will have to be found and the monies required are not small. Hove Civic Society, the organisation behind this initiative have already raised pledges of £55,000 but much more is need to enable the project to achieve its full potential. To do this they have created a variety of support opportunities starting with one-off donations and rising to annual Founder Legacy Pledges of £50 a year and then rising through bronze, silver and gold. There are brochures with donation forms around the city. Online donations can be made via www.justgiving.com/hovecivicsociety For more information contact karin.janzon1@gmail.com www.hovecivicsociety.org

travel a fair deal and on my travels I love to see cities where streets are not paved with gold but adorned with public art. Across the world it would seem that creativity is honoured by being given a place in and amongst our daily lives. I’m not just talking about countries beyond the UK but in cities here too, sculptures, fountains, murals (by which I by no means include tagging) and so much more. So why is it that in the city of Brighton and Hove there is so little. I have lived here 30 years now and I cannot think of much happening across those years. I can name the Kiss Wall, the doughnut on the groin, that odd but effective work on the pebbles that kids seem to think is a skateboard ramp and the ever-changing murals in Kensington Street that certainly

We trade heavily on being such a hub of creativity, but where is the public evidence of this

being such a hub of creativity, but where is the public evidence of this? Well keep your eyes peeled, not for a while yet but pretty soon a new initiative, called the Hove Plinth, will finally come to fruition. I was recently invited to see the three winners of a competition to create works that will sit on said plinth revealed. It took place in the Mayor’s Parlour, a charming room with some rather good art on the walls in the Old Town Hall. There we were introduced to the artists and shown channel 159 or at thelatest.tv

ANDREW KAY DINES OUT

FINE FOOD & FINE ETHICS AT SILO he politics of food grows meal by meal. Right now I am fascinated by the city’s new Sugar Smart campaign and you will see that my column will carry that logo for as long as it goes on. Hidden sugar is a real issue, for adults yes, but most importantly for kids. This joins my enthusiasm for the Fare Share charity who redistribute food that would otherwise be sent to landfill. I shop wisely, have little if no food waste and although I do have sugar and honey, I use very little. Whilst making the Cook It! TV series for Latest TV I would cook with kids and wanted them to learn to enjoy home-made dishes and healthier alternatives to some of the junk that is paraded in front of them. A real champion of zero waste is chef Douglas McMaster at Silo. His preindustrial ethics are admirable, a passion that he is making work – but what of his cooking? Now open for one year I was delighted to be asked along to celebrate the occasion, delighted and eager to see how the concept has developed. I admit to being slightly ambiguous at the start, would ethics outshine cooking? Well I was wrong to worry! Douglas is as triumphant as a chef as he is as an advocate of his politics. Let me expand. Dinner started with a couple of plates that not only looked impressive but tasted great too. Dehydrated potato skins with a rich eggy sauce and moss was exceptional, a fabulous balance of earthy, crunchy and unctuous. Skin and blood was a marvelous Spanish style scroll of pork scratching with a deep blood red ketchup, again marvelous. We moved on to pig’s ear, corn and egg. Well I have never tasted better corn, tiny, sweet kernels balanced with a confit egg yolk and strands of crisp pig’s ear that had all the flavour of bacon rinds back in the day when bacon rinds would crisp up like pork crackling. A crackling good dish. I sat at the counter, a great choice as Douglas passed over the herbivore choices for me to try too and I loved the jerusalem artichokes dusted with grated liquorice root and a green apple puree – wow! Next up for the omnivores a perfect piece of halibut served with salsify in roasted and pureed form. Wonderful fish, really wonderful and great salsify. Beneath an earthy and slightly sweetened broth and pickled wild

Game season is here and Douglas was celebrating that with slices of perfect meat

mushrooms. Lovely as the mushrooms were they were a touch too lively for the rest of the dish in my opinion, but as ever that is only my opinion. The herbivore option was ricotta and blue cheese dumplings with fennel salad. Oh my, what a delightful dish – and a generous one too! (At this point I would like to point out that I was sharing the extra dishes with Tom, who was sat to my left, a passionate cook and food blogger). Next for the omnivores came venison. Game season is here and Douglas was celebrating that with slices of perfect meat dressed with pine oil and pickled brambles. Foraging here at its very best, wonderful sweet brambles and a deep green oil that had just the right amount of pine flavour to be fascinating rather than astringent. As you will see there was a lot of food and we did pass on the herbivore dish of cauliflower with red onion and mustard. It looked stunning but was, we thought, a dish too far for us – and there was dessert to come! I was served the sweetcorn, rye and lemon and loved it. The rye grains had been boiled, then dehydrated then fried and they were simply delicious. The corn once again sweet and perfectly appropriate as a pudding and the lemon came as a course granita. Tom had the sea buckthorn dessert with celery and rose and I admit that neither of us liked it – but one miss out of a list of so many hits can be easily forgiven. Throughout the dishes were matched with fascinating wines and breads and we finished with shots of cold brew coffee and chocolate and molasses truffles. I went home very happy and look forward to going back which is now far easier as they can finally open the restaurant to 11pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. 39 Upper Gardner Street, North Laine, Brighton, BN1 4AN 01273 674259 www.silobrighton.com

All Saints Church in Hove was completely unrecognisable inside; it had been transformed into a runway complete with a bar and hundreds of people passionate about fashion. I spoke to makeup artists, designers and students and their love of fashion was the one thing that they all had in common which made for an incredible atmosphere.

Each collection was very different; I personally liked the wintry blue/grey colours that both Isaac Raymond and Fanny Holst used in their collections. Tracey Dockree’s collection was interesting and quite unusual; it featured many of the models with big padded hoods that made them look like they had square heads. The show concluded with the collection by Hellavagirl, which was a creative (and bizarre) mix of

The winner of the prize, as judged by Jess Eaton, Cat Fletcher, Damian Santamaria and Laura Santamaria, was Afton Ayache. The design was inspired by a story of selflessness and appreciation for what we have, waste was used to create the African prints. Follow me: @andrewjbullock ell The Apprentice is back, and this year kicks off with those infamous shots of people in suits marching through Kings Cross St Pancras (even though they live in Peckham) peppered with soundbites from the new batch of contestants. It’s the same old chat – such as “I want the cars, the women and the power” (because Lord S is famous for all those women); or “I’m a Swiss army knife of business” (so five parts useful, fifteen parts only useful if caught in an avalanche?); or “I’m disgustingly ambitious” (or are you simply disgusting?); then there’s the woman who “wakes up with a chemical surge of power in the morning to become a global phenomenon” (despite only actually saying one sentence during the rest of the episode); there are two wannabe Anglo-Italians, one of whom states that he’s “going to be richer than Lord Sugar, and he needs to realise that” (which is always the way to encourage someone to give you his money). Finally there’s Sue Pollard in a pink tartan wool suit. So that’s that bit out of the way. Except from one other who claims that he’ll wait until the boardroom and then pounce (he’s the one that gets fired). Nick’s off in Leeds doing Countdown now, so they unveil that horrid Claude bloke as the new aide, who is usually to be seen ripping apart the business plans in the penultimate episode of the season. The candidates are all a little bit sick in their mouths at this news. Karren is now Baroness. The task has them designing fish dishes to sell on street corners. Team names are decided: Versatile and something like Connectus or Connect4 or something. Selena the pole dancer is allocated as PM because she is intolerant to a load of food. April from Jamaica is PM on the other team because she is taller and prettier than the average person. Off they’re all sent to Billingsgate at 2am to purchase some cheap rancid squid and unsalted cod substitute. Then it’s to the kitchen to make the dishes semiedible. Versatile do a bit of a bish, bash, bosh job and are off selling lunch at lunchtime. April on the other hand spends a load of time telling people off so they miss the lunch rush and try to make up for it by charging people 900 pence for a soggy tuna salad. When in the boardroom, the guy who is allegedly going to be richer one day than Lord Sugar starts rambling about how he was really disappointed with everyone else, but then it comes out that he tried to sell fish to a vegan. But it’s the opposing team that lose, making only about a pound’s worth of profit. April brings back in Dan and Brett who tries to defend himself by uttering the following sentence: “Lord Sugar I can honestly tell you that I generally categorically did not stipulate with any other specification than that recipe and the way it was put together.” 10 points if you can work that sentence out. Dan asks that he be saved from termination because he is “good at addition and mathematics” and that during the task he “sliced the olives and tomatoes and was doing the pans”. He’s fired, of course! BANISH FEARS THE EASY WAY Samantha Harman discovers more about hypnotherapy and The Conway Practice onathan Conway has been a successful practising accredited hypnotherapist for the last 20 years, his motivation to work within the field stemmed from his own past experiences. He explained: “When I was a student I was suffering from stress and had overcome dyslexia just before my exams. I found hypnotherapy to be a very helpful and practical approach in overcoming my personal problems.” A combination of hypnotherapy, NLP and coaching is deployed as a less expensive and time-consuming alternative to traditional psychotherapy. The hundreds of clients that Jonathan has helped over the years means that he is well-rehearsed in dealing with complicated and unusual phobias. Without breaking any client confidentiality he revealed: “The most unusual phobias I have dealt with include a fear of eating vegetables, being without mobile phone coverage and a fear of certain numbers.” Generally he deals with more straightforward issues such as childhood trauma and a fear of public speaking, and particularly enjoys helping people develop their confidence and self-esteem. “I enjoy the fact that every client is different and needs to be treated as an individual, no two clients are the same and I learn something valuable for each person that I am fortunate to help.” Jonathan Conway – Accredited Hypnotherapist NLP Master Practitioner and Coach, 01273 540425/07956 855027, www.theconwaypractice.co.uk

WAVE RICHARD FULTON

WAVE SAMANTHA HARMAN

The importance of a healthy acid and alkaline balance

Enjoying Lush’s range of Halloween themed bathroom products he witching hour is almost nigh and in order to mark the occasion Lush fresh handmade cosmetics have conjured up a spooky array of freaky fun bathroom products. In my opinion Lush should be commended for their nod to Halloween, as many businesses seem to have bypassed the pumpkin season altogether and instead have chosen to dive headlong into Christmas. I was invited to take said products for a test run and was most excited to receive a spooky Halloween package containing Night wing shower jelly, a sparkly pumpkin bubble bar and Lord of Misrule shower scream and bath bomb. Overjoyed at the prospect of spending the entire weekend indulging in decadent baths and sweet smelling showers, first on the agenda was the Night wing shower jelly. The product is batshaped and jet-black, its wobbly consistency releases a zingy lime scent and purple lather when rubbed onto the skin. Apparently it is also packed with aloe gel and carob syrup, overall a lot of fun to use and would be a firm favourite with young and old trick or treaters alike. Shower number two featured the Lord of Misrule shower scream. Lush’s senior press officer, Elizabeth Bowles, informed me that the name is inspired by the ruler of the pagan feast of fools. Feeling mad, bad and dangerous to know in such insalubrious company, I stepped into the shower with high expectations. I was not disappointed. The product contains a blend of black pepper, patchouli and fair trade vanilla, and it smells divine. What impressed me the most was the long-lasting fragrance it left behind on my skin, even hours after showering. The accompanying Lord of Misrule bath bomb was undoubtedly the star of the show. After dropping it into the water I watched the green globe effervesce slowly before it gave way to a deep red interior, the overall effect gave my bath a witch’s cauldron makeover, notably when it popped and fizzed. Again, loads of fun and I couldn’t wait to get in. My fourth and final Lush bathroom experience was with the sparkly pumpkin bubble bar, fragranced with a fruity blend of juniper berry, grapefruit and lime. This one was the most pleasing to the eye being pumpkin shaped, burnt orange and covered in a ton of gold glitter – what’s not to love? It’s also great value for money as you don’t use the whole thing at once. I crumbled half of it into the bath and watched my tub quickly become a convivial haven of bubbles. Not only do I smell infinitely sweeter than usual, but so does my home. I would highly recommend all of these products as they will certainly provide an extra dimension of fun this Halloween.

T

cid (the Latin for sour substance) is one of the class of substances that are neutralised by alkaline. Alkaline is found a lot in nature . In ancient times the Chinese and Greeks used to refer to the veins in the human body as rivers of blood or rivers of life. As you may know if you get an alkaline river it is full of life: fish, bugs, plants etc; whereas an acidic river is dead i.e. full of death, decay and disease. In 1931, a man called Dr Otto Walburg discovered the cause of cancer. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work. He was of the understanding that if you wanted to do something about cancer you needed to know the cause and his work became known as the Walberg effect. Basically, cancer cells live off sugar (glucose) and also thrive in an acidic environment, Dr Walberg was quoted as saying that no disease including cancer can exist in an alkaline environment. Therefore in my opinion, going by Dr Walberg’s findings, it makes sense to put as much alkaline food and drink into your body as opposed to acidic foods which in turn feed cancer growth. The human blood pH level should be slightly alkaline (7.35-7.45), below or above this range means symptoms and disease, so it is important to eat a balanced diet. Your body’s pH affects everything, therefore balancing the pH is a major step forward in wellbeing and greater health. PH is a whole new world and I will write about this some other time – bloody interesting (sorry about the pun). Human beings seem to love an acidic diet i.e. the typical American diet: animal protein, meat, butter, alcohol, coffee, soft drinks, drugs, tobacco and stress. If it is in a packet it is probably acidic. All foods, like fruit and vegetables and some spices are alkalising. One of the best things you can put in your mouth is watermelon, even lemons change from an acid to an alkaline when they enter the human body. A guide listing alkaline and acidic foods can be found on the following website: www.rense.com/1.mpicons/acidalka.htm I personally think alkaline wins all the time in the battle for a healthy body, as my Nan used to say ‘all in moderation’, and she was so right. I hope you have enjoyed this read. I have read about all the information I have mentioned on the internet, but if you have any worries about your health you should always see your Doctor.

COMMUTABLE WILL HARRIS

GET ON BOARD BRIGHTON & HOVE BUSES

Will decides to scale down his commuter ire after an eye-opening trip to Ethiopia

Significant bus service improvements for Woodingdean residents righton & Hove Buses attended Woodingdean's Community Conference on Saturday 10 October to report on service improvements to route 2 and 22 further to a public consultation carried out in March. The public consultation aimed to listen to the Woodingdean community about their experience with bus services in the area. The bus company reported a very high response rate which informed Brighton & Hove Buses that the majority of residents did not want any changes implemented to the routing of service 2 and 22 but for service reliability to be significantly improved. To address this, as well as operational actions to improve service reliability, the bus company made an investment of £600,000 per annum to provide an additional bus to service 2, giving more running time and maintaining the existing 20 peak time frequency more reliably, and an additional two buses to service 22, improving frequency to every 15 minutes. Andrew Boag, Chair of Brighton Area Buswatch which represents local bus users said: "We worked with Brighton & Hove Buses on suggested improvements and are pleased that there is now a significant improvement to both the 2 and 22 services. The more frequent service on the 22 coupled with improved reliability should make it much more attractive to bus users in Woodingdean. The bus company has honoured the commitment made to local residents earlier in the year when the service was poor and generating a lot of complaints. This is an excellent outcome". In regard to the operational actions made, bus company Business Development Manager Patrick Warner said: "We paid particular attention to how our controllers respond when our buses experience multiple instances of severe congestion and roadworks throughout the city and as a result it is extremely rare now that a bus will ever be turned short or fail to complete its journey into Woodingdean. At the conference the residents recognised clear improvements in our services and thanked us for listening to their views in February and throughout the consultation". Former Woodingdean Councillor, Geoff Wells met with Brighton & Hove Managing Director Martin Harris earlier in the year to raise concerns about service reliability prior to his retirement from the council. He said at the Community Conference on Saturday: "I would like to thank managers from Brighton & Hove Buses for taking our concerns seriously and say that as a regular bus user, I have noticed the big improvement in reliability of our buses".

B

t’s around two and a half hours in to a four hour trek off-road through the Ethiopian highlands that I come to the decision that I’m never going to complain about my commute again. I’m accompanying a journalist on a press trip (a semi-regular aspect of my job), on a route that takes us from Bahir Dar, a palm-fringed resort town on the shores of Lake Tana, to the ramshackle township of Mertule Mariam in the distant north. The Chinese, our guide tells us, have grand plans to build a highway between these two places (just another example of China’s gold rush into East Africa), but our party has arrived eight months too early and must do the whole trip on the old road, which is little more than a dirt track dotted with rocks and cratered with pot-holes. To say it’s uncomfortable going is an understatement. Even in our airconditioned land-cruiser, and with our experienced local driver, the car bucks and plummets like a stallion that’s caught sight of a gelding iron. In some places, the Chinese have already shipped in their heavy machinery, although their only achievement so far has been to churn the track into a muddy soup, which of course the local jalopies get stuck in, blocking the road. Compounding our misery is the seatbelt situation, the situation being that I don’t have one. Earlier, on discovering that the car was only equipped with one working seatbelt, I did the professional thing and offered it to the journalist. I am now seriously regretting that decision, as every time we hit one of the larger potholes my head bangs into the car roof (later, when we finally return to Bahir Dar, it will take a day and a half before my vision returns to normal). Despite all this, as I stare queasily through the window at the highland farmers driving their goats and oxen to pasture, I somehow find myself counting my blessings. These may not be the same Ethiopians that first Jonathan Dimbleby and then Live Aid dragged to the west’s attention – the fields are a healthy green these days, enough for most farmers to scratch a living at least – but economic recovery has been a long march. In one village, I see a man crouched by the road, drinking muddy water from tyre tracks. In another, the wooden shacks have been flattened like the aftermath of a hurricane, yet people are clearly still living in them. My guide assures me these are normal sights in the highlands, but it’s impossible for a westerner not to be challenged by them. So no more complaining from now on, I tell myself. However bumpy this ride, however many times I bang my head against the ceiling, I might as well be in a Lear Jet compared to the millions worldwide whose daily commute is done in threadbare sandals over stony ground, and with no guarantee of income at the end of it. The 06.57 to Bedford never looked so good.

e held a meeting recently between Mile Oak Primary School and STEMSussex regarding what activities we are going to hold on the Primary Science and Technology bus. It was decided that we would run with a nature theme programme of events to begin with. It was therefore quite apt that I had just received a flyer to attend the Big Nature Event at the Brighton centre. Big Nature is a not-for-profit company with the goal to inspire a renaissance in the relationship between ourselves and local wildlife. To do this Big Nature aims to take three major steps:

Nature does not abide by school 2 Promote Biodiversity Education within catchment the Biosphere both on our own and with areas 1 Undertake a program of habitat restoration within the Brighton & Lewes Downs Biosphere, creating new habitats wherever the opportunity arises.

partner organisations.

3 Build the Big Nature Centre in the heart of the Biosphere. The communities of Brighton & Hove and Lewes have gained the designation as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This aims to integrate the natural environment with these conurbations, breaking down the artificial divide between urban and rural areas, urban and rural living, enriching the lives of the people in the process. The Big Nature Centre is an integral part of this objective, demonstrating how the goals of the Biosphere Reserve can turn into positive action, providing a central focus, as well as a visitor’s centre for the reserve. The visitor’s centre will be built on the 28 hectare Surrenden Campus, shared with seven other educational institutions including a sixth form college, two secondary schools, an infant and junior school, a crèche and a special needs college. It then occurred to me that nature does not abide by school catchment areas and this is one area in education where every primary school and secondary school in Brighton and Hove should collaborate together, sharing best practice. Ignoring inter-school competition, uniting under the banner of ‘nature’, we could link the activities together, benefitting far more individuals in Brighton and Hove rather than the select few. I have said before how I abhor the unhealthy competition that has been racked up between schools due to league tables. Brighton and Hove schools need to share best practice and work together to raise the standards within all schools and for all the children who live here. The techy community have for years been using a form of open learning where they share best practice and help to solve each other’s problems. It is known in the field as copyleft, rather than copyright. Schools within Brighton and Hove should be leading the way in reform and implementing this practice for the benefit of all the children. Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) is a college offering sixth form, 11-16 years, youth centre, adult learning, community education, sports centre and pre-school. fter a two-year struggle, last month saw the opening of an exciting new co-operatively run artspace – Corridor Gallery – in York Place. Like so many Brighton enterprises (Arty included), the idea was formed late one evening in a local pub, where tipsy chatter lead to the dream of creating a legal, sustainable shared destination to display and sell a wide range of work – from handmade craft to contemporary (or fine) installation art. Now the red corridor promises to lead you to monthly exhibitions showcasing the wealth of local creative talent coming from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds – and we can’t wait to see what’s in store. There’s a gift shop full of works by local artisans. And for local artists, the space provides fair commission rates and a wonderful location to exhibit. There are no restrictions on the types or style of art the Corridor team is hoping to show. So the gallery will transform throughout the year, providing plentiful new works to wonder at. At Krog towers, we empathise completely with the stress and energy involved in getting such a scheme off the ground. (Don’t mention our brief dalliance with a pop-up gallery to the Dane. It still brings him out in a cold sweat. Not to mention the hit on our bank balance!) So good for you guys – we hope it’s a passageway to super success. Don’t miss: ‘Blooming Marvellous’, a celebration of nature in clay by Fran Doherty, whose dramatic ceramics are inspired by the flowers and plants she sees around her. Fran plays with texture, colour and scale to create sensational, almost architectural results. See for yourself at 35 North Fine Art Gallery, North Road. Until 14 November. www.artymagazines.com Twitter @brightonsarty

The Riot Ensemble present local modern classical music on Halloween

Should we have more of the happily ever after moments?

great collection of musicians called the Riot Ensemble are in town this week, who I've been lucky enough to see twice before at concerts in the last few years. They aim to connect people to contemporary music and are led by a core group of seven musicians, programming and producing concerts themselves and featuring music they want to play. Such passion and commitment shone through in their previous shows, with informative introductions and well-rehearsed playing creating a fantastic all-round evening and a good atmosphere. So far in my column I've looked at immediately melodic pieces that would appeal to music fans of all types, but this concert might appeal more to those with avant-garde or indie or alternative rock leanings. If you like anything like Ben Frost, Nils Frahm, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, then this could be your kind of thing. The Riot Ensemble will be playing modern classical, which can frighten some people but don’t let that put you off! There are melodies and satisfying musical resolutions to be found, you just might have more of a journey to find them, kind of like switching from Radiohead's The Bends to Amnesiac perhaps.

A

This concert might appeal to those with avant-garde or indie leanings

Which isn't to say that modern classical music isn’t enjoyable, in my first review from over two years ago I wrote that there were beautiful gems such as an enthralling piano piece by Nicholas Omiccioli. When I saw them in 2014 they combined local compositions with international pieces, including Gustavo Penha's 'Estudo Sobre Gravitacao' which “evoked a horror movie soundtrack descent that was unsettling in an enjoyable way”. The programme is generous and good value for money, and includes Jonathan Harvey's chamber masterwork 'Death of Light, Light of Death'. Harvey wrote that the “unflinching sense of catastrophe that hangs over this picture has given it a special appeal to the sensibilities of our own time.” The concert is centred around that haunting piece and also includes Helen Grime's 'Oboe Quartet' and David Lang's 'Lend/Lease' piece for piccolo and woodblocks. I’ve never seen live woodblock playing myself so I’m looking forward to that, and atypical instrumentation is one of the joys of modern classical music. There will also be music from Peter Copley, Phil Baker, Patrick Harrex and Jonathan Clark, all of whom are New Music Brighton composers who live and/or work in Brighton. It's on an early night on Halloween so it could work as a fun, suitably spooky outing before a night out. If you want to try something different and striking this Saturday then give the Riot Ensemble a whirl. St. Nicholas Church, Brighton, Saturday 31 October, 5pm, Tickets £10 on the door (£5 concessions)

s it is almost Halloween I am sure you are expecting here to read about some classic movie villains, about a great horror film coming out this week or perhaps learn of the greatest and most diabolical schemes to ever grace the silver screen… But isn’t that all just a little too old hat? Haven’t we been there, done that? Hollywood films are often accused of being formulaic and nowhere is this more true than in their slavish devotion to the antagonist. Even modern ‘dark’ films featuring antiheros, or children’s films with a fully redeemable baddy who gets their comeuppance, still abide by the rule. Somehow, at some point, there will be a long section or a repeated riff on misery-guts-ism (definitely a word the Oxford English Dictionary needs to clue in to); a certain character will be evil or just plain mean to the people around them and the heroes will be in conflict with each other. Once the bad character has been vanquished, once the misunderstandings between the leads has been corrected, then and only then can we all breathe a sigh of relief and start with the happy part of the film. Which is exactly when the end credits roll! In movie land, as soon as everything is good and the world is in balance, the film must end. There is no time for pleasing, pleasant scenes of characters being successful and nice because once the villain has been vanquished and the amped-up central conflict solved, the nice parts must be crushed into one final scene. It is an awful shame and I for one would like to see a lot more of these happy times. I often find myself wishing there were fewer scenes of the miserable middle and more of the post-credits happy ever after. Happily, two of the best films of this month managed to buck the trend: The Intern and The Martian. With the first being a sweet comedy about a retired old man and the second a space adventure they might not at first appear to have much in common yet they both excellently circumvent expectations of conflict in film. Here we can watch in unmitigated pleasure as talented people showcase their skills and have a lot of fun together – which is equally great fun for the audience! The protagonists of these films don’t labour to become good people: they’re already amazing. That’s why we’re watching a film about them. We don’t need a villain. Life is hard enough sometimes so let’s just sit back, relax and enjoy some refreshing kindness on our cinema screens. The Ordinary Boys – Samuel Preston is both an Ordinary Boy and a one-time celebrity… ou may remember the 2006 series of Celebrity Big Brother, which within its many sub-plots, featured the one-time constant tabloid presence, Samuel Preston, otherwise simply known as Preston. The Worthing born and bred singer and songwriter struck up an intimate relationship with fellow inmate Chantelle Houghton, who eventually went on to win the thing, to be followed by marriage, and not long afterwards, divorce... At the time Preston and his band The Ordinary Boys were riding high in the charts, having enjoyed initial success with the Britpop/American pop punk fusion of Over The Counter Culture, followed by the more ska-based album Brasshound and the pop-friendly How To Get Everything You Ever Wanted in Ten Easy Steps, all of which featured hit singles, including Boys Will Be Boys, Lonely At The Top and I Luv U. But, that was that. Shortly afterwards, he embarked on a soon-to-beaborted solo career, followed by a

Y

more fruitful career as a songwriter for others. In particular he cowrote the number one hit, Heart Skips A Beat, With Olly Murs. “I don't even remember if we split up; I don't think we did, not officially,” says Preston. “We never officially came back either. We've done the odd tour but I'm so wary of saying ‘we're back’. I hate the idea of being on the nostalgia circuit. When we did our first album we had to get our parents to sign release forms, we were under the age of consent to make an album. We've always been a young band.” And they do sound young, vibrant and fresh. The new,

eponymously titled album, the first for nine years, could have been made before they ever released anything. American pop punk and hardcore, along with hints of UK indie and punk, infuse this tremendous blast of fresh air. “It really has been a case of getting into a little studio with our friends, and recording songs we had written, bashed out in the practice room, in the way we would have done it for the first record.” As Preston has candidly admitted: “The Ordinary Boys had wandered pretty far from the sound, energy and ethos that had garnered respect for our debut album and earned us our still-loyal fanbase. So, I made Spinal Tapesque phone calls to bassist James Gregory and drummer Charlie Stanley who I hadn’t played with since that record. After promising several times that it wouldn’t sound anything like the questionable third album, we met for some beers and started rehearsing. We were 15 again.” Haunt, Tues 27 October, 7pm, £11

REMOTE CONTROL RUMINATIONS appiest news story I've heard in a long time? The one about the Rolling Stones and how they lose patience with their TV remote controls. This, believe me, is music to my ears. Unlike any of the actual music the Stones have released in the last two decades. According to this report, Jagger, Richards and co., on their latest US tour, insisted on having written instructions for all the electronics in their hotel rooms. But the hidden implication of this story (namely, that these guys have an average age of 147, so what else would we expect?) is missing the point. This isn't an age-related issue. Not at all. This is, very specifically, a remote control issue. Because TV remote controls are, without exception, designed by idiots. I know this for a fact, because I once visited a TV remote control factory and every single person in the design department, I swear, was wearing one of those big pointy dunce's hats with the letter D on it. Turns out it was the company uniform. So is it any wonder that the product they create – whichever company it's for – is about as practical and real-world commonsense-driven as Jeremy Corbyn? As I write this, for example, I've just picked up the nearest remote control I have to hand – for a modestly sized Toshiba, albeit with a built-in DVD – and can you guess how many buttons it has? A couple of dozen? Thirty? Not even close. The remote control for my Toshiba RC-1910 has no fewer than 50 individual buttons on it. I am not kidding. I think I've used about six. It wouldn't be so bad if we had time to plough our way through the manual for these things. But we don't. Not least because we have other remote controls screaming just as loudly for our attention, with dozens of their own stupid buttons. I have a separate remote for a Sony Blu-ray player, for example – again, not exactly top of the market – and that alone has a further 41. Seriously. Forty flipping one. Let's be honest, the only buttons a TV remote control needs are to turn it on, turn it over, turn it up, and blow it to smithereens if Katie Hopkins comes on. So, yes, well done to the Rolling Stones for highlighting this TV remote control madness, albeit in their slightly mental rock-star fashion. I don't think this is age-related befuddlement on their part, struggling to work these things out. I think it's just that they can't be bothered. Which is fair enough. If I were a Rolling Stone, I'd do as they do. Pay someone else to be bothered on my behalf. Mike Ward is the TV Critic of the Daily Star and the TV Editor of the Daily Express Saturday magazine. Bad Jews Theatre Royal Brighton, 19 October 2015, ★★★★★ It may well be called Bad Jews but by the end of this grippingly vitriolic hour and forty minutes of dark comedy it is clearly apparent that this play is a brilliant vehicle for expressing a sense of horror and dismay at the state of the human condition. Set in a studio apartment in uptown New York three cousins, Jewish, and one WASP lock horns over a piece of jewellery after the death of a grandparent. Delivered with breathtaking verve, and some very fine monologues, they gradually reveal their hands, a passionate clinging to a religious heritage, a fierce disregard for that same heritage, an outsider caught up in the crossfire and a sibling who wants to be left out of the argument. Rapidly relations deteriorate, with indifference, extremism, seemingly innocent bystander and conscientious objection all playing their part. We laughed heartily, the script is excellently crafted to make you do so, but under the brittle veneer of humour is a powerful story, one that exposes the horror of racism, religious fervour and ethnic superiority. Ailsa Joy is extraordinary as the impassioned Daphna, Daniel Boyd as Liam gives a brilliant performance, Antonia Kinlay is a perfect gentle foil to their anger and Jos Slovick is the soft connective tissue in this brilliant work, holding the final twist so close to his whole that it comes as a gentle, but disturbing, sigh of relief as the lights finally dim. Andrew Kay

Tommy Tiernan – Alive In Brighton Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome, 17 October 2015 ★★★★★ Watching a comedian of this calibre follow his own flights of fancy with no preparation whatsoever was both exhilarating and glorious. Tommy Tiernan switches from feral comic to winsome poet on a sixpence, skipping fierce ballet of wits against himself that is a privilege to witness. It’s a self-set challenge, to fill an hour that tonight takes us from last night’s dream, to a surprise encounter with Tiernan’s teenage idol on the seafront, and right through to the origins of man across the globe. A true craic of a riveting time. Victoria Nangle

Hofesh Shechter Company’s barbarians Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 21 October 2015 ★★★★★ Ominously warned by staff that it “would be loud”, barbarians certainly delivered, not only in volume but also in thematic terms, and even in the lighting. The opening ‘the barbarians in love’ piece was technically dazzling, with a robotic, electronic Arca sort of soundtrack perfectly synchronised with stark white lighting illuminating the tentative figures below. The sensorial assault then abated to a moving respite of warm light and neutral, uncertain nudity. ‘tHE bAD’ was a raucous, sexier romp with a funny meta-moment when a dancer spoke to the audience that was entertaining rather than gratuitously conceptual. The final part featuring a duet of lovers in different stages of a relationship was unnerving and sad, but also funny and sweet. A bewitching, turbulent, emotional, startlingly well-rehearsed and directed marvel. Joe Fuller

WEDNESDAY 28 The Apprentice: You’re Fired BBC2, 10pm They say never work with animals or children. It’s too late in the evening for children to stay up, so Lord Sugar’s task to sell pet products was the thing to trip up one unlucky candidate. Jack Dee, Romesh Ranganathan and guest comedian Susan Calman put the poor sod who lost through the mill of funny questions.

My Mania And Me Channel 4, 11pm Impulse Control Disorder is a debilitating psychological condition, as this documentary attempts to convey. It’s when an individual has an overwhelming desire to repeat behaviour, whether it be stealing, gambling, having sex or buying clothes. Neuroscientists look closer and sufferers explain what it’s like.

Supernatural E4, 10pm These monster-hunting men are so good when they’re bad, and not much is getting badder than Dean and his Mark of Cain. Even Crowley’s finding Dean’s funtimes a bit much, and they’re beginning to cause problems for him in Hell. Wouldn’t want that, no. Who are the good guys again? Moral ambiguity abounds.

THURSDAY 29 The Last Kingdom BBC2, 9pm Brand new historical drama, and we’re not talking stately homes here – this story is REALLY old. It started last week, when Uhtred lost his Danish family in a massacre. So, neither Saxon nor Dane, he’s in a bit of a pickle. After checking the lay of the land with Viking Ubba, the soon-to-be Saxon king looks like his best bet.

Unforgotten ITV1, 9pm Do coppers in TVland ever laugh, and not in a dark and jaded way? Just an idea, could SCI Cassie Stewart guffaw so hard she pulled a muscle? How about DS Sunny Khan. Just a thought. They’re both still waist-deep in the investigation into Jimmy’s death, and marks on his body imply gangland torture. No laugh.

Detectorists BBC4, 10pm The lovely low-key but still a bit surprising comedy is back, with our two pals and their beeping machines full of dreams. Andy’s been considering internet dating, just not for himself. It’s his mate Lance who still hasn’t recovered from the loss of his ex-wife and Andy reckons he needs a bit of help. This’ll end well.

SUNDAY 1 The Hunt BBC1, 9pm Oh yeah, it’s all about that Attenborough. Those sombre tones that guide us through the most stunning and brutal truths in nature, with hunting clearly having heaps of both of those ingredients. From long distance stalkers like Nile crocodiles, to killer whales who use teamwork. All narrated by magic Sir David.

Downton Abbey ITV1, 9pm Such happenings, such a busy household – well it would be with that many people in it. No wonder these old houses have all been turned into hotels. Henry Talbot invites the Crawleys to watch him motor racing at Brooklands, but events leave Mary reeling. And Violet makes a plan to surprise the family.

The Ty And Ky Show ITV2, 10pm Always good to set up a family business – familiarity breeds a lack of standing on ceremony, which in this case means a fine seam of comedy exposed. This pilot sees cousins Tyrone-Lee Davis and Kieran Shekoni in their own comedy sketch show, featuring characters from all manner of influences. Lots!
