CITY GIRL
IN THE CITY
VICTORIA NANGLE don’t know about you, but I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that my flat and I are twinned. All summer long we revelled in the warmth, the cool breezes with the windows thrown open, I wore floaty dresses and tripped off to the beach with a book and a towel in case I felt like a dip. We loved the summer, my flat and I. More recently autumn arrived, and we arrived at a place of contentment. I got the boiler serviced, cleared out several stacks of books to the Cancer Research charity shop, went through boxes and caught up with old friends I love. Home and I got a bit of maintenance and I moved a picture from one wall to another. This felt quite momentous, and allowed the neighbours to crinkle their brows as I banged away at a picturehook one weekend afternoon. I can do the DIY, I got tools, man. They’re the loofers of the home. And there have been times when the home and I have both been a bit of a mess, and usually we don’t mind that. The difficulty comes when I’ve been a bit too busy (October is filled with awesome comedy shows and brilliant people’s birthdays – what can I do?). I’ve been a bit too busy. The flat is not happy, and it’s letting itself be known. First off was my kitchen sink. I know, I neglect it – maybe I should take it on holiday like all of chicklit novels seem to be convinced I have to whenever I pack. My kitchen sink was making some very strange gurgling noises. I ignored it. More fool me. Then my kitchen sink started taking its time to drain the water after I’d washed up. I wasn’t happy about this but thought I could probably sort it out myself. Here’s a hint... you know that screw in the middle of the drain that looks like it simply holds the mesh to stop gunk going down the drain? Don’t try and undo it to unblock the sink. It does a whole heap more than hold a bit of metal in place. It stops blocked water from streaming down underneath your sink and onto the floor. And so I’ve called a plumber, like I should’ve done in the first place. So dear Plumber, know this. Not only am I hoping that you fixing my sink will allow me to clear the stack of washing up that’s gathered. I’m also hoping you’ll sort out my sore shoulder and blistered feet. Because my flat and I are twinned. And when you heal one I’m hoping you help the other out too.

VICTORIA NANGLE
thelatest.tv essica Kellgren-Hayes shares the lowdown on Latest TV’s feminist programme for all to enjoy. ‘Feminist’ is a tricky word and one that can turn people off very quickly. Unfortunately, in the modern media and especially online, it has been so twisted that a lot of people don’t know what it means – just that they don’t want to declare themselves to be one! The Rosies is a brand new, fun and informative talk show from Latest TV that busts myths and gets straight to the truth. Growing up with feminist views and loving television, I was always looking for a TV show that I could relate to – so I made one! Each week, our panel of four women – plus-size model Kitty Underhill, stand up comedienne Rebecca Shortall, assistant therapist in a therapeutic community Annie Whilby and I – are joined by a guest to discuss topical issues. Although there is a feminist slant to the show we do consider all view points! The programme is aimed at men, women and everyone in between. It’s often hard to find out what words used in feminist debates really mean and that can be confusing. A lot of my friends have been put off taking a stand on feminist issues because the terms used by ‘those in the know’ are often not very common so they feel they’re not educated enough! We don’t want to exclude anyone from watching the show. You don’t need a degree in social theory to watch and each week we will explain what those complex words mean in our ‘Word of the Week’ segment. From ‘microagressions’ to ‘heteronormativity’, we’ve got you covered! Rosie the Riveter is one of feminism's most visible icons of working women. She represents the women who worked in factories and shipyards in World War II following the conscription of eligible men. It’s from her we take our name! In each episode we showcase a ‘Rosie of the Week’ – a short video about a historical figure who has aided the lives of women. There is so little out there to educate people about feminism in a fun and informative way – social history doesn’t have to be dreary and dull! You can find all the short

segments on ‘The Rosies Show’ playlist on my YouTube channel, MissJessicaKH. Full episodes are available on the Latest TV YouTube. This week is about Home Education and the guest, Ruthanne, has been home educating her children for the last seventeen years. Ruthanne recently set up the Bright Alternative Learning Centre for 10-16 year olds where 20 students come together twice a week to research and discuss topics from Ancient Egypt to David Cameron. The children can access qualifications such as Art and Sport Leader Awards and iGCSEs but in addition visiting tutors teach them about personal safety, finance, bushcraft and other important life skills which, sadly, are often not in the national curriculum. That is one of the benefits of a small private learning centre. Many parents teach their children entirely at home. Not everyone will agree with home education and some of the women on the show may have strong views to the contrary. Tune in to find out... Whether you are shouting ‘no!’ or ‘yes!’ at the screen whilst watching, the aim is to get people involved. If you would like to suggest a guest who would be great for the show, a topic we need to cover, a historical figure who should be championed or a word that you would like explained then you can tweet us @TheRosiesTV or channel 159 or at thelatest.tv

Now that’s quite a retirement! And at the other end of the sporting field, up in Glasgow, Judy Murray is contributing her coaching expertise to tennis coach Kris Soutar’s initiative Tennis On The Road. Training up parent/children teams so that the grown ups learn to play with their kids in ways that will help develop skills associated with tennis – they’re starting them young! It’s such a good idea! Who doesn’t appreciate tying in playing to anything? But with this kind of expertise channelling it, we’ll have a challenger to Andy Murray nipping at his heels in no time at all. Judy Murray isn’t the only celebrity to be found in this week’s 4

n a sunny Sunday morning, warm enough to sit outside and have a cheeky drink or two, I joined my friends Mr T & M L (the latter being your actual French). We walked down Elm Grove where, at the bottom, we were confronted, or should I say affronted, by the spectacle of a huge inflatable reindeer. Too much and far too soon! It may sound curmudgeonly, but really, Christmas decs out before Halloween or Guy Fawkes! I was appalled. Time certainly flies and as I get older it flies pretty damned fast. So fast that the last thing I want to see is the hastening of festivities into my life in a premature fashion. This of course will seem somewhat hypocritical when you flick through the magazine and find that I am writing about Christmas menus. O I know, pot, kettle, black etc… but apparently when it comes to booking your festive dining now is the time to do so. I tackled the weighty Christmas topic a few weeks back – out of necessity. As you may have read I have family in both Somerset and in Wales. Christmas time is a family thing for me, but the logistics are complex and pitching an idea has to be done at the right moment. Too soon and it sounds contrived and desperate, too late and it sounds like you don’t care. Between my brother and I we contrived last year to cover the whole holiday season between us so that Mum would have family around her at all times. We need to do that because Christmas also marks the anniversary of Dad’s death and of her own father’s death too – so not a good time in that sense for any of us. I eventually decided that the time was right to call the brother and funnily enough he had been contemplating the holiday too. Fortunately he had come up with a very attractive plan, so this year I will travel to his very nice home on the Welsh Borders where I will join
city bedecked with bent willow and tissue lanterns for the spectacle that is The Burning Of The Clocks. I rather like that one, the weirdly pagan feeling of kids burning time. If only they knew, there is no such thing as time to burn. I wish that we could slow down the pace at which all of these things arrive, maybe embargo the use of pumpkins until a week before all hallows eve, Fireworks until a week before November the fifth and Christmas decorations no sooner than December the first. Was that not the way things used to be? Whilst I’m on the subject, can we ditch the pumpkins and return to turnip lanterns please (turnips to me, swedes to you probably). And trick or treat? Must you? Well okay but do remember the Sugar Smart campaign and perhaps seek out a different kind of treat – or the ghoulish consequences might be obesity, diabetes and amputation – now that really is scary. Maybe we could bring back ducking and bobbing for apples – or does that run the risk of dragging out the health and safety police crying loudly “Risk of autumnal fruit-related injuries!” I ask you? Really I do. I will be out for Halloween, or at least my lights will – and my door firmly shut. I hate fireworks, a childhood accident involving a flare match, a nylon sock and Wellington boot put paid to that and I am too old and fat to be indulging in treacle toffee and parkin, sadly. Despite all this moaning I do love Christmas and I love the lights and baubles and tinsel and all. I love the food and the merriment, the carols and carousing and I will be first to suggest that it’s time to break open the advocaat and maraschino cherries to mix that first festive cocktail. BUT NOT YET! So please, if the reindeer is yours, take it down for a while yet, the only kind of deer I want to see right now is on a plate with a nice rich gravy – sorry Rudloph!

for further celebrations over the new year holiday. Now as far as I am concerned that is enough talk of Christmas for at least another six weeks. Then, and only then will I consider getting out the baubles and decking my modest halls with boughs of seasonal leafage. have always had close ties with Shoreham through Leo Sayer and I also lived there for about four years. When I learned about the tragedy that took place in Shoreham this August I felt I wanted to do something for the families and friends of the victims and I came up with the idea of releasing one the songs Marina and I have recorded as a duet entitled ’We Will Not Fall’. I contacted Marina and we have been recording the album, exchanging vocal files and backing tracks via the internet, and it has worked out brilliantly. My friend, photographer Ian Williams, created the sleeve image and video producer Will McGuigan of Big Eye Productions produced a beautiful video. We turned the whole thing around in a week!" Brighton-born and internationally acclaimed musician David Courtney is celebrating his 50th anniversary in music with the release of a two CD set, ‘Anthology’, an album featuring the many artists he has written for and produced over the years and the album sleeve portrait created by leading sports artist Paul Trevillion. David started his career as a drummer in a local band called ‘The Urchins’ at the age of 14, turned professional at 15 when he became the drummer in Adam Faith’s backing band. David's first big break was as a songwriter with Leo Sayer, and he has also worked with Roger Daltrey, David Gilmour, Ritchie Blackmore, Eric Clapton and Sir Paul McCartney. The Anthology set can be found at Amazon and at all record stores. Last month David dedicated one of his new songs, a collaboration with Russian musician Marina Kapuro called 'We Will Not Fall’ as a tribute to the victims of the Shoreham Air Show disaster which occurred in August this year. The song was released on September 4th and is available as a download with the proceeds being donated to creating a memorial shrine where the families can go and reflect on their loved ones. hat better way to see in the new season of MIC than a really dangerous opening scene where Spenny pretty much drives Lucy off the road in a couple of vintage cars? Ollie’s back on girls. And foundation. Ollie we don’t want you with a girl. Don’t you remember the Chloe Green fiasco? We don’t care if she could get you free shoes. Jamie bumps into someone called HARNEY!!!?? Who the HELL are you, Harney??? He has the arms of a Greek javelin thrower but the head of a 6-year-old child. Lucy is dressed like the stepmother from the Disney version of Cinderella. It’s all in the high-laced collar. Jamie and Jess had sex and everyone doesn’t care. Why? Because this little game of swings and roundabouts is boring. Jamie, why can’t you go back to being a heartless love rat, it’s so much more fun for us. To add insult to injury, Jess has still got that nose ring, as if she were a bull marked for branding. Apparently, during the blonde on blonde sex, they laughed a lot and Jess instructed Jamie not to look at her. “That’s not right,” says Wise Mother Toff. Wheeze is wearing a shirt that says ‘bitches’ on it. Sam’s wearing a shirt that’s open, whilst ironing. He has actually got a good body for a small boy. But do your shirt up when you speak to your sister Sam. Why must the Thompsons conduct these inappropriate interchanges. There’s a dinner happening and Spenny is just poetically inappropriate, first declaring that he’s kissed everyone at the table, then asking Ollie why the frick he won’t just date a man, then telling everyone that Jamie and Jess had non-looking-at-each-other sex. Tiff shows Steph some photos of Sam sprawled over someone in a Taiwanese nightclub. Steph asks why she isn’t more devastated, but Tiff met some bankers over the summer and feels guilty (she asked them to look over her tax return). On a roof somewhere, Irish Nicola is back, teeth whiter than ever. Harney is there and approaches Jess and pretends he doesn’t know who she is. He’s been to Kenya – twice. Alright Harney, cool your jets. He then announces that he wants a girl with “a good set” for some fun. He’d do well on Grindr. JP and Binky converse for the first time since LA. JP apologises to Binky but then ultimately confirms that he still doesn’t want to date her, consequently devastating her all over again. Tiff comes over and cries to Lucy about the banker situation. Lucy makes her go and tell Sam about it. I think Sam’s had some work done over the summer. We know what you did last summer, Sam. Tiff tells him that she looked at a banker once and he flies off the handle. The bells then begin to chime signalling the death of another Chelsea pairing and beckoning Tiff towards a life as a prioress. Andrew Bullock is a producer, presenter and writer. STUFF TURKEY! Who needs to anyway, with such a great range of alternative dining choices this Christmas ’m no turkey fan, the country yes, the food no. It might seem radical, and yes, I will indulge just that one time a year for the sake of tradition, and more often than not to keep mum happy. Many of you though love turkey and all the trimmings that go with it, in fact the trimmings are often the best part as far as I am concerned, those pigs in blankets can make or break that festive feast. And for those turkey lovers there are plenty of traditional dinners to be had out there. So this week we would like to share some of the best, from the truly trad to the deliciously alternative. Of course there are so many requirements thrown in the face of a Christmas party. Firstly size, how many of you will there be? We have found places that can offer everything from an intimate dinner a deux to a 200 strong rave up, complete with live entertainments, music and dancing. Yes, the ultimate office party, although

SPICE UP YOUR CHRISTMAS The seasonal menu at the acclaimed Chilli Pickle is full of delicious delights ored of your usual Christmas party? Well look no further than The Chilli Pickle! Every year The Chilli Pickle’s Christmas menu offers their usual award winning Indian Cuisine with great seasonal ingredients and festive notes. The menu starts with classic poppadoms & their signature pickles & chutneys as well as some punchy little Rajasthani pickled onions and masala nuts. A few examples of starters are the Duck Momos – Momos are Nepalese steamed dumplings with a great flavourful kick. The duck is the seasonal festive ingredient as opposed to their usual chicken or mutton and is perfectly accompanied with a blood orange and chilli chutney. The Crab Pakora have a luxury taste of the sea and looks amazing, just like sea urchins with the spikey sev noodle coating. They are served with a vibrant saffron riata topped with Salmon Keta caviar

Little green pea kebabs and tapioca fritters make for a great veggie starter with 2 tangy chutneys for dipping. Main courses include whole lamb shank slow roasted in spices. The tender meat just falls off the bone and is served with mint butter naan, Bukhara dal and Rogan gravy that makes for an impressive-looking feast as does the whole tandoori poussin with apricots and warm spices, pink pepper naan and Kachumber Raita. we strongly advise against sneaking into the office of the venue to photocopy your bottom! (Does anyone have a photocopier these days?) Then you have to think about those amongst your party who are vegetarian, pescatarian and vegan. It’s seldom a problem in Brighton and Hove as we have so many excellent restaurants who fully embrace all of these requirements – and I don’t just mean the specialist venues. Simply ask and your needs will almost certainly be met. For those amongst us who crave something that little bit different, an element of spice should I say, then they are equally well catered for with exciting ethnic foods from around the world featuring so highly in the city’s culinary firmament. All in all Brighton and Hove has plenty to offer for the discerning diner at any time of the year and for every pocket, and no more so than when we ride into the Christmas party season, sleigh bells ringing – happy booking! lovely seasonal winter vegetables in a lentil stew spiked with ginger and coconut and served with a South Indian Uttapam Rice Pancake and a flavoursome smoked pepper chutney. If you love paneer you won’t be disappointed with the Saffron marinated Paneer & Piccolo Pepper Kebab that is baked in the tandoor and served with a festive chesnut pulao and a decadent Korma Gravy. Another stand out dish is the Seafood Moilly. Fresh local fish and shellfish is cooked to perfection in a tasty coconut, ginger and green chilli gravy and comes with a rice pawa and a zippy pickle. You can’t have a Christmas meal without dessert and the home made Masala Chai Kulfi with Stolen cake and forest berry granita will have you sighing in delight! Finish the night off with one of Chilli Pickle’s signature cocktails or loose teas and you and your guests will be smiling all the way into the New Year! EVERYTHING EVERYTHING THE INTERVIEW
EVERYTHING EVERYTHING TALK TO JEFF HEMMINGS ABOUT EXPLORING THE NEW COMPLEXITY ith other bands such as alt-j, Foals and Django Django exploring the boundaries of pop-rock and tinkering with traditional notions of song structure, The New Complexity, as it has been called, has seen an adventurist, yet popular, spirit take hold in the world of alt-indie. Everything Everything, however, prefer to see themselves as simply a pop band, albeit one that does deliver a technicoloured and multifaceted sound that speaks of sophistication and invention, whilst remaining very accessible, often joyous, and often sublime. Certainly, EE are a remarkably intelligent band, made up of members who are deep thinkers. Original member Alex Niven left the band to become a full-time writer and poet, and is currently working at New Left Review, the highly regarded bimonthly politics magazine. He, along with singer Jonathan Higgs and drummer Michael Spearman are all from Northumbria, and met at school in Hexham where they played music together. Another Alex – Robertshaw – took over guitar duties in 2009. Whilst at Salford University studying for a degree in Popular Music and Recording, Higgs met Jeremy Pritchard (bass), and plans were hatched to form a band after studies. Niven, Spearman, Higgs and Pritchard were to convene to start what Niven has called “…a sort of Paul Morley-inspired, poptimist aesthetic”, exemplified by the name they took, a kind of everyday word dressed up in some kind of universality… "It was the only one we liked at the time," says Michael Spearman. "We have subsequently realised it was lyrics from (Radiohead's) Kid A, although I think it was subconscious. We just liked the word, and the word next to it again, and the sound of it, and the look of it even… it has a kind of expansive, inclusiveness to it. Some people think we are some way elitist, but that is in no way our agenda. We always wanted to make hooky melodies because we wanted people to sing along. We like everything from Captain Beefheart to Beyonce." Meanwhile, Higgs has commented about their music: "We think of it as pop primarily. We try not to make it sound like a lot of things you’ve heard before, not on purpose, but it tends to come out a bit like that. We’re not really interested in copying certain genres or anything, so I guess you’d say it’s unpredictable and sort of surprising." After their first rehearsal in September 2007, events moved swiftly for the band, their debut single Suffragette Suffragette released the following year, and they made it on to the esteemed BBC Sound Poll of 2010, a list
W
created by Britain's tastemakers who vote for their favourite new artists. Get to Heaven, their third album released earlier this year, is their best yet, each song a mini-pop symphony, made up of at least two or more movements, but held together remarkably well; partly through Higg's distinctive voice, that endlessly shifts gear from high speed rapping to high pitched falsetto; partly via the musical style of the individual band members, in particular the penchant for the caribbean/African picking of guitarist Alex Robertshaw, but also through the lyrics of Higgs, which are for the most part are serious, and thoughtful, often about socio-political themes and incidents, such as the rise of the far right and extremism, primal human nature, power, corruption and lies. Perhaps most importantly, the band play off the seriousness and sombre-like qualities of the lyrics, with music that is playful, sometimes dancey, and rarely melancholy, hunting or morbid. "When John does interviews he talks about how a lot of the lyrics are angry, but when you listen to the album that is probably not the first thing you hear, although it is definitely in there… there's plenty of bands who make angry records and angry music, but we like subverting things and being as interesting as we can." Much has been made of the lyrics of Higgs throughout Everything Everything's oeuvre. Themes of media manipulation and political and social apathy litter their music. It's all rather refreshing in this day and age when mainstream pop and rock is often afraid of discussing politics, economics and social affairs. "It's quite angry, it's quite defiant. It talks about – a lot of bands wouldn't set foot in this area – things happening in the world, politically. I think lyrically he's talking about things like what drives people to extremism. It feels like in the west that capitalism is something we've just grown up with, and it's our way of life. On the whole, we are a kind of Godless society, and in the west there is this sense of not knowing what is meaningful any more. And then on the other side you've got this religious extremism, where they do really feel vehemently about what they are fighting for. Obviously, we can say they are wrong and that some of them are terrorists. But, It's interesting looking at those two sides; apathy on one side - 'isn't the world awful. Never mind, I'll go and get a coffee from Starbucks' and on the other side some people are willing to kill themselves. De La Warr Pavilion, Sun 8 Nov, 7pm, £17.50

ill Young was spotted outside the Brighton Centre on November 2. His nationwide tour 'The Love Revolution Tour' has run throughout October and continues into November. After a stretch in the West End production of Cabaret it is his first tour in four years. His new number one album '85% Proof' is described as "his most personal/ honest songwriting to date." After a 9-year wait The Ordinary Boys are back with their new album 'The Ordinary Boys'.
W Once the camera “ had stopped rolling... both actresses fell about laughing s part of his documentary, ‘Granny’s Gone Wild The Lynn Ruth Miller Movie’ based on the book Starving Hearts; Bill Smith transformed his living room into a 1950s style dining room. With Ant Carpendale as the cameraman and drama editor, Bill directed the actresses as they reenacted scenes from the book based on Lynn Ruth Miller’s early life. Lala Maria Redin played the main character Susan Talberg, who struggled with anorexia and bulimia, no thanks to her verbally abusive mother, played by Julie Watson. Both actresses had spent that morning scouring Brighton’s vintage shops to find the perfect outfit for their characters. I was the costume advisor and general
A
assistant to Ant; helping with the lighting or sound. The first scene that we shot was a series of gritty moments that showed the effects verbal abuse can have on children. Susan’s mother psychologically tormented her to such an extent that she developed an addiction to food. Lala demonstrated this addiction perfectly by eating as many cakes and spoonfuls of cream/custard as she could as fast as possible. She then went on to highlight Susan’s eating disorder by pretending to throw it all up again. Even with cream all over her face, hair and blouse she managed to stay serious and portray the pain that her character felt in between mouthfuls of food. Once the camera had stopped rolling and Julie had finished
saying nasty things to her onscreen-daughter, both actresses fell about laughing. A few weeks later we shot some more scenes, this time with the addition of Jacob Fulton playing Susan’s first husband and Rose Grover as the lady he had an affair with. Dressed up in ‘50s wedding attire the actors and actresses performed some scenes outside St Georges Road Church, Brighton. Ant expertly dodged any sign of modern day life from his shots, including all of the cars that were parked right behind the actors. Having seen some of the footage I can already tell that this documentary is going to be brilliant because the acting was so special. Who said Hollywood can’t start in your living room?
The boys performed at The Haunt, Pool Valley on October 27 with support from The Spitfires and The Lost Boys. Preston, who owns and used to live in a flat in Brighton, Western Road, excitedly tweeted: "First proper hometown show in 10 years tonight" – the boys had not performed in Brighton since they had performed in the Dome.

COMMUTABLE WILL HARRIS
GET ON BOARD BRIGHTON & HOVE BUSES
Treasuring time and questioning the motives of seagulls
Dementia Safe Havens scheme
n unexpected side effect of sacrificing four hours of each weekday to the commuting gods is that my free time has suddenly become a lot more precious. Gone are the endless evenings of Netflix and BBC iPlayer, the hours gurgling like bathwater down the plughole of my watch-list. Gone the deadtime of the Saturday supermarket circuit, strategically swapped for a Waitrose delivery slot booked four days in advance from somewhere outside Three Bridges. Gone too is the vacant stare through the kitchen window, hands wrapped around an early morning mug of coffee as I mentally prepare for the day ahead. My vacant stare is now reserved exclusively for the train window, and my mental preparation doesn’t generally kick in until some point north of East Croydon. In fact, any time that does not fall under the categories of work-time or train-time is now a valuable commodity, not something simply to be treasured (time, after all, is one of the few things in life that can’t be locked away on a high shelf) but invested wisely. Every moment must be used with care. Not a minute is to be wasted. Hand in hand with this new compulsion to be always moving, always doing, is an almost pathological fixation on how much sleep I’m getting. Time may be my new currency, but time asleep is my gold standard, an aspirational eight hours a night to balance the books and ensure my waking hours can continue to run like clockwork. Brighton’s seagulls do not want me to have eight hours sleep a night. It is possible they don’t want me to have any at all. On Sunday nights, they clatter across our roof (we live on the top floor), banging and clanging on the metal like an avalanche, or possibly the End of Days. We don’t know what they’re doing up there. My Other Half thinks it’s a turf war, but I maintain it’s some kind of seagull Riverdance (“What do we know of their customs?” I challenge him, as we lie awake, listening to the ceiling). At times (mainly those times I’m sleep-deprived having been kept awake half the night), I wonder if the seagulls are a manifestation of Brighton itself. A reminder of the four hours a day that have been robbed from my schedule since my flight south, a loss I try not to complain about but feel acutely. Last Sunday night, I snapped. Wrapping a blanket around myself, I went out on the terrace with a tray of ice cubes and began throwing them, one by one, onto the roof. (The ice cubes, in case you’re wondering, I’d dredged from a half-remembered Agatha Christie story about an icicle being the perfect murder weapon – ice melts, you see; no evidence.) I was halfway through the tray before I realised the roof was deserted, and the seagulls must have flown off when they heard the patio door slide open. Great, I thought. Another two minutes of my life I’m never getting back.

e recently got involved in the Dementia Safe Havens scheme. The Safe Haven Scheme, in partnership with Speak Out ‘Safe Places’ is an initiative that allows us to offer a safe place to go if needed. At the present time this is primarily for people living with Dementia or people with learning disabilities. We have been working with the Alzheimers Society for some time now who have been most supportive in the training of our staff and offering guidance on how we can help and support people living with Dementia. The scheme will offer help and support to anyone presenting themselves as needing assistance or is unsure of their surroundings. All customer service staff are Dementia Friends and have been trained to recognise and help if someone obviously needs assistance or is confused. Staff can offer something as simple as a cup of tea and a safe place to sit until they are feeling better or to take this further to call upon expert help if required. Staff are equipped with information, support and contact telephone numbers to call upon to receive more specialist help if required. The Safe Havens can also offer a place, in partnership with Safe Places, for people with learning disabilities to go if again they just need a place to sit and wait until they are feeling more secure. There are 21 other ‘Safe Places’ in the city which allow people with learning disabilities to be provided help and assistance if they feel unsafe or threatened in any way. We are pleased to be offering this service and will continue to help and support where we can. We would like to thank the Alzheimers Society as well as Speak Out for all their help and assistance.

SCIENCE UNLOCKING POTENTIAL
BRIGHTON’S ARTY ALISON KROG
Dr Caroline Oprandi keeping you up to date with science & technology at PACA
AUSTRALIA ON THE DOORSTEP
n Thursday we had the astronaut Ken Bowersox visit the school. For me, it was just like being a kid again and waiting for Christmas morning! Ken Bowersox is from Houston Texas and is a former NASA astronaut with experience of five Space Shuttle Missions, two as Commander and a long duration Space Mission as the Commander of the International Space Station. Ken has been a Space Shuttle pilot, conducted science experiments in Space, carried out Space walks and was involved in the Hubble Space Station repair mission. He has travelled ~85 million miles in Space in 211 days. Ken held the pupils’ attention for over an hour showing them video footage from the International Space Station and some truly amazing pictures taken from Space. Pupils and staff alike were totally enthralled and had plenty of questions for him at the end. Questions ranged from what was it like to experience zero gravity, what did it feel like when walking back on earth again and was there ever any evidence of other life forms? Ken encouraged the pupils to follow their dreams. Ken stressed that if he can be an astronaut, then anyone can. Above all, he told the pupils never to be afraid to make mistakes. I really liked this one since it fits in with one of my favourite Einstein quotes “a person who never made a mistake never tried anything new”. Ken also delivered a very powerful message about world peace. In the International Space Station Ken worked alongside Russian Astronauts. He explained that one of his Russian colleagues was formerly in the Russian military but now they were working side by side in Space. Ken explained that he no-longer thought of home as being a town, city or state but he saw Earth as his home. As highlighted by Katie Scott, PACA’s head teacher “ one of the most profound things that Kenneth Sox said was about landing in Kazakhstan, 500 miles away from where they were supposed to land, and still feeling like they had come home”. There was, however, one not so lovely picture in his presentation and this was a picture taken from space during the Iraq war. Ken said that rather than spending money on weapons, if the world spent money on international space exploration then there would still be money left over. He highlighted that Space exploration brings communities together like nothing else can, breaking down international borders. If the space crew were being interviewed in Russia they would wear the American NASA uniform; whereas if they were in America they would wear the Russian one, just to make a point. exciting series of free art workshops on Thursday evenings throughout the year. Open to everyone, each event will be hosted by one of the gallery’s resident artists and will include practical sessions and talks on a range of different artistic techniques. There will be the opportunity to chat over a drink afterwards – so what’s not to love? Beginners and pros are welcome; and the classes promise to a relaxed, enjoyable opportunity to explore and experiment with art in a gallery setting. The first session takes place on 26 November. Led by local artist Peter Spence, it will be a hands-on exploration of commonalities between classic Pointillism and Aboriginal dream painting – a traditional Australian art form. Upcoming workshops include sessions on bringing characters to life with illustrator Jasmine Mercer, painting animals with Kirsty Craghill and capturing architectural perspective with Richard Marsh. Inspired? Then email fbailey@baileyalexander.co.uk to book your place or find out more. Don’t miss: We mentioned the launch of the Corridor Gallery a couple of weeks ago. And blow me, if they haven’t set up a show by one of our favourite Brighton artists (and North Laine neighbour) Chris MacDonald. If you’ve never experienced the MacDonald effect, expect to be blown away by his surreal re-imagining of found objects that encompass everything from musical instruments to false teeth! Gorgeous songs, early opera and lewd strumpets at Brighton Early Music Festival
A classic film review this week, looking at Fritz Lang’s Ministry Of Fear
I
previewed the first half of BREMF's concerts a few weeks ago and return now to focus on the final events. An exciting classical music festival in the heart of Brighton and a markedly high calibre of performers is worth shouting about as much as possible in my opinion! Catrin Woodruff This Wednesday sees one of early music's greatest heroines (soprano Emma Kirkby) and heroes (lutist Jakob Lindberg) join forces, playing music by John Dowland, Henry Purcell and more. Kirkby's voice is sublime, and you can find popular videos on YouTube if you want to hear her for yourself. Dowland is a favourite composer of mine, 'Come Again' is a stunning song for example with a heartwarming ascending melody. It might sound old fashioned in style but as far as I’m concerned the song could be a contemporary pop ballad. (Heroines Of The Golden Age, St

Denis Lakey (Acis & Galatea)
George's Church, Wednesday 4 November, 8pm) The first surviving opera by a woman composer is being fully staged at the Old Market on Thursday, with the titillating title 'La Liberazione Di Ruggiero Dall'isola Di Alcina'. A cornucopia of music, dance and drama from Archduchess Maria Maddalena, this is a great opportunity to see some high quality opera in the centre of town for a low price. And it also features an “evil, sexual sorceress”, which is just how I like my sorceress’. There are four performances but it's worth noting that the Saturday family-friendly matinee is slightly shorter (cutting the prologue) and cheaper, with tickets from £10 to £20. (The Old Jakob Lindberg & Emma Kirkby Market, Thu 5 Nov 8pm, Sat 7 Nov 3pm, Sun 8 Nov 3pm & 7.30pm) Lewd Strumpets and Constant Wives are hitting St George's Church on Friday (8pm), with The Carnival Band and BREMF Community Choir performing tales of murder, sex and cruelty with the audience sat in a cabaret format. I admire anything that tries something new with The Carnival Band classical concert programming, so the fact that one is invited to bring a picnic to a 'raucous pub-style' evening should make for something boozy and fun. The mighty English favourite Handel's 'Acis And Galatea' was described as a “little opera” by the man himself and is a hugely popular, dramatic work. Soprano Catrin Woodruff will play the heroine Galatea and although this concert has sold out of standard tickets, there will be plenty of £5 Prom tickets on the door, meaning that you can sit upstairs in the church and still get a great sound. (St George’s Church, Saturday 7 November, 7.30pm) Go to www.bremf.org.uk to find out more about the rest of the programme and book tickets. watch on

A plunge into the eerie shadows of a world turned on its head by war
“
he great Fritz Lang’s adaptation of crime writing maestro Graham Greene’s novel, Ministry Of Fear is suffused with dread and paranoia. It is a plunge into the eerie shadows of a world turned on its head by war. Lang was one of the most illustrious of the European émigré filmmakers working in Hollywood during World War Two and his work centred on unpredictable thrillers with style to spare. In wartime England, Stephen Neale is released from an asylum. Determined to reintegrate into society, Neale makes a beeline for the local railway station, but before the train to London can arrive, he is sidetracked by a seemingly innocent village fete. But, of course, things are not all they seem… Ray Milland might not have had the widest range as a leading man – and he is no Cary Grant – but there is a certain deportment, class and debonair charm about him. After a vividly executed and exhilarating gunfight on foot in the countryside during a German bombing raid, Neale finally makes his way back to London. He sets about investigating the mysterious group responsible for organising that strange village fete and nearly getting him killed. Rapidly he is accused of murder, and plunged into a tempestuous mystery of deception, Nazi agents and war secrets! And all played out amongst the day-to-day dangers of the Blitz. There is a lingering sense of dread throughout, as Neale moves alone through the foggy, bombed-out streets of London, exposing a secret enemy network, hidden beneath the veneer of respectable society. Unable to approach the police due to his criminal record, and with everyone he meets a probable enemy – including the beautiful and resourceful femme fatale, Carla – both Neale and the audience’s judgments must cut through the fog of deception. Carla becomes his chief ally but her motivations and true allegiances are unknown… From the outset the psychological state of Milland’s character is hinted at, but only explored in a couple of scenes later on; chiefly that in which Neale, caught in an air raid and forced to a shelter with Carla, confesses the reason for his incarceration in an asylum. Beyond this there isn’t a great deal more insight into his psyche. Admittedly, something which might add depth to the movie. There is also a somewhat unfortunate ‘happy ending’ scene tacked on to the end of the film… but I love a happy ending, no matter how superficial! Even if you don’t; this is a top-notch absolute classic of a film, with many memorable scenes, including a creepy, atmospheric fake séance. MUSIC JEFF HEMMINGS
LATEST MUSIC CHART
Songhoy Blues – Another brilliant band from war-torn Mali alian music has enjoyed a tremendously fruitful last few years belying its relatively small population size of 14.5 million. Kora maestro Tourmani Diabate, roots and blues guitarists the late Ali Farka Toure, and Rokia Traore, Tuareg bands Tinariwen and Tamikrest, and singers Salif Keita, Amadou et Mariam and Oumou Sangare, have all achieved international recognition, all loosely marrying western influences with the traditional sounds of their country. You can now add Songhoy Blues to that esteemed list. Via an interpreter, African Express co-director and band manager Marc-Antoine Moreau, the French speaking Malians told their story. “The problems happened in the north of my country in 2012, when jihadists tried to take over from the (anti-government) rebels and install Sharia Law. I had to flee Dire (a town upstream from Timbuktu). They banned all music. On the radio all you could hear was
M
praying. Nobody was allowed to play or listen to music,” says guitarist Garba Toure. Not surprisingly he left for the capital, Bamako, even though it too was experiencing strife and conflict. As fate would have it he met up again with fellow musicians, guitarist Oumar Toure and singer Aliou Toure. All three belong to the Songhoy people, one of the main ethnicities in the north, hence the band’s name, which is married to the idea of both the desert blues of Northern Africa, and of America. “I was invited to a wedding party, and I asked the others to join me for a
performance. It went well, and we got a drummer (Nathanael Dembele) and started playing bars and clubs”. It seems that their raucous guitar-based songs, that aim to bring peace and reconciliation to the country, helped to bring together the different ethnicities of Mali. When they learnt that Africa Express (initially set up in 2005 with the idea of promoting artistic collaboration between African and western musicians) were visiting Bamako in 2013, the band arranged for themselves to audition, which led to a collaboration with the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Nick Zinner on a track that ended up on Damian Albarn’s African Express project album, Maison des Jeunes. They then released their debut album, Music In Exile, earlier this year. So, how does Mali do it? “In Malian culture, music is very important, and it’s everywhere. Everything culturally is related to music.” Concorde 2, Tues 3 Nov, 7.30pm, £12

A long time ago in a galaxy ha, ha, away... his weekend will see no shortage of incredible outfits from the depths of time, space and ingenuity as Comic Con Brighton arrives for a few days. Because we are a city of remarkably creative people. And because we are such creative hosts the fun does not need to stop just because the Metropole Hotel has closed its doors for the day. Saturday sees your chance to catch the marvellous show from Paul Jones – The Nerdfather. Fandom is frequently passed done from generation to generation, like travelling companions in Doctor Who. The faces may change but the passion stays the same, and each generation think that they’re the one who really discovered the magic first. Or at least, that’s what Paul Jones probably hopes. The Nerdfather takes an hour to tell the tale of one Dad going to extreme lengths to share his passions and loves with his possibly nonplussed offspring. As Jones says; they say you should never meet your heroes but nobody said a word about

STRICTLY QUITE TIME CONSUMING race yourself, because I'm starting this week's column with a remarkable statistic. Namely, that the number of people who apply, per series, for Strictly Come Dancing audience tickets has passed the four million mark. Seriously, four million. And how many people does the studio hold? Seven hundred and fifty. Hardly seems worth bothering, right? But actually there's a way to jump the queue. All you have to do is establish yourself as Britain's ninth favourite TV critic, and then sort of ask nicely. It was by adopting this effortless tactic that my daughter Emily and I found ourselves at Elstree – or was it Borehamwood, certainly somewhere that grim – a couple of Saturdays back, on the week when a robotic Daniel O'Donnell was destined for the Strictly chop. And boy, did we have fun! No, not really. Oh, all right, we had SOME fun, up to a point. And don't think I wasn't grateful to be there, course I was, ahead of so many proper fans who'd have willingly sacrificed their favourite limb for such a privilege. It's just that watching TV shows being made really isn't very magical. Not only does it strip away the mystique, but it can also be crushingly dull. Watching the live part of Strictly was fine, I'll grant you, albeit perched on seats built for anorexic pygmies. I even put up, just about, with being repeatedly instructed to clap, cheer, whoop and standingly ovate (not that I shall EVER whoop, by the way, I'm 55 years old and British.) What pushed me over the edge was the results show, recorded an hour or so later. The one that gets shown the following evening, where they like to insult the viewers' intelligence and pretend it's live, even though all bar the hosts are still wearing Saturday's clothes. Sitting through the taping of the results show, believe me, is tortuous. The opening dance routine alone takes forever – stopping, starting, stopping, starting, until the choreographer is content. The gaps between the other segments, seamlessly stitched together for TV, are interminable. The live broadcast (for which you've had to arrive, by the way, at 4.15pm) may have finished just before half eight, but it's a further two hours before you're out of there, hands raw from all that compulsory clapping. On the plus side, they've given you a Kit-Kat, a Just Juice and a 10minute window of opportunity to queue for the Portaloos, so it's not like it's entirely devoid of glamour. If you've applied for Strictly tickets yourself, please don't let me put you off. But bear all this in mind. Oh, and on the journey home, prepare to find the M25 down to one lane, so some luminous men can stare at cones. Nish Kumar – Long Word, Long Word, Blah, Blah, Blah... I’m So Clever Studio Theatre, Brighton Dome, 24 October 2015, ★★★★★ Intelligent, bright, silly, extremely funny and marvellously thoughtprovoking – Nish Kumar brings all this and at the same time keeps a disarming honesty that is both endearing and entertaining. He unflinchingly shares his mother's criticisms of his comedy with us, deftly weaving his bigger picture political ideas with a personal perspective. Angry at times, yet with a conspiratorial smile just moments away, Long Word, Long Word... is pacey and cleverly written to engage the minds of Kumar's audience further than simply tickling them for the simple laughs. Not one for the half cut or unprepared to commit, this is stimulatingly engaging, executed with a skill that stays with you beyond curtain down. A delightful mental treat. Victoria Nangle
Saul Glyndebourne, 27 October 2015 ★★★★★ Originally written as an oratorio, Handel’s Saul has seamlessly been transformed into a full-blown opera in this glorious production. Goliath has been slain, and Saul in gratitude welcomes the young hero David. But as the court and family embrace David, Saul is driven mad by the realisation that David is a threat to his crown. Christopher Ainslie beautifully portrays David’s shell-shocked bewilderment and Henry Waddington’s Saul, torn apart by jealously, viscerally unravels. The rest of the cast are all excellent, but the Glyndebourne Chorus are the stars of this show, revelling in the exquisitely colourful excess of the opening banquet, to post-battle monochrome, as they confront the audience, starkly lit by the footlights, as David becomes king. Martin Lovelock
Years & Years Brighton Centre, 24 October 2015 ★★★★★ Frontman Olly gave his usual all-out but humble performance and the show was also excitable, backed by a group of young musicians. The band are far from stationary onstage, adding bounce and excitement to their catchy mix of R&B and old school house. With their recent chart hits ‘King’, ‘Desire’ and ‘Shine’ being the main attractions, the place was packed out with people from all ages providing a buzz and desire to get up and dance along with the rest of the tracks. Not many people can pull off an on-thespot cover of Britney Spear’s ‘Toxic’ in the middle of a set but Years & Years managed it spectacularly, sending the crowd into a nostalgic craze of dancing and screaming. Ryan Chambers
Asian dub foundation live score THX 1138 Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 27 October 2015 ★★★★★ The electronica band’s live score to Star Wars director George Lucas’ first feature was a mixed bag, with the first half sounding awkward and at times arguably too restless for the melancholic, ethereal film. The dialogue was inaudible at times, although the band’s dynamic of reverbed and delayed guitars with flute, occasional beatboxing and drumming was accomplished. The most effective section was undoubtedly the exhilarating final chase scene with propulsive beats ramping up the tension and the momentum of the live performance also building to a fine crescendo. A fun experiment in rescoring that was more a curio for fans of the film or band, rather than a successful fusion in its own right. Joe Fuller watch on

FRIDAY 6 NCIS: New Orleans Channel Five, 9pm A morgue should, in reality, be one of the safest places to be. Regardless of how spooky it might feel, the fact is that you’re surrounded by concrete, officials, and everything is very clearly delineated as either dead or alive – with little risk of moving from one to the other. Until tonight. Hostages at the morgue.
QI BBC2, 10pm And so the countdown to the end of Stephen Fry hosting this magnificent series continues. Time to make the most of the national treasure’s blustered and beautiful embarrassments, banter with Alan Davies and delight at the brilliance of facts. Noel Fielding, Cariad Lloyd and Rhod Gilbert join in tonight.
The Returned More4, 9pm When is a ghost not a ghost? When it knocks you up, that’s when! The second series of this atmospheric French drama continues with the fallout from the first – of dead friends and relatives returning to their loved ones, the fallout and, most importantly, what brought them there, all looming large still.
