Jason Donovan – Ten Good Reasons & Greatest Hits Tour Jason Donovan is returning to his roots for a solo tour of his debut 5 X Platinum, 1989 album ‘Ten Good Reasons’ and ‘Greatest Hits’. Brighton Centre, 23 March 2016, £32.50/28.50, brightoncentre.co.uk
hristmas presents are on my mind. I’m allowed to say that now because it’s November and my budgetting history says not to leave the bulk of the buying to one paycheck. We all know that crippling period where generosity (or desperation for any object that doesn’t smell for that relativewho-has-everything) has exceeded the old bank balance. I like to wander through the discount and charity shops without urgency, seeing if anything jumps out as perfect and unique for those special persons. It’s great to spot a completely unknown film on DVD in the sale rail starring your best mate’s favourite actor. Bosch! This year I thought I’d try and make a few presents too. Specifically, I had the bright spark notion of recording myself reading a good book out loud and seeing if I could put it on to a CD for my great aunt in Dorset, who, in her nineties is still a marvellous force for good. She is also now blind. Over the last few years I’ve been sending her audio books as Christmas presents via that ever-so-helpful-and-monopolising online store, but this year I thought it would be nice to read something myself. I could even add a little personal note at the top of it. A dedication, if you like. So I did a trial run last night. I read ‘Rikki-Tikki-Tavi’ from Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book into my iPhone Voice Memos, and even though I stumbled a little to start with – particularly over some of the less familiar Indian names – I really enjoyed it. There’s something wholly satisfying about reading out loud that we’re programmed to forget about as soon as we’re taught that reading “in your inside voice” is preferable. I forgot that I love reading to small children. I mean, I don’t just like it, I love doing it. And I must be pretty good at it as they tend not to get distracted when I’m reading. And they ask me to do it again, which kids don’t do to flatter you. So now I just need to find the perfect story to read to my great aunt. And work out how to put it onto a CD. But the story is the most important thing. Or maybe I’ll just keep collecting more ‘trial runs’ and pop them all over to her. Short stories from my bookcases. I like the sound of that...

TOOTH & CLAW y two favourite things in life are music and the media, I’ve always wanted to produce a show based around music, so when Latest TV gave me a chance to do so, I jumped at it. I am a massive fan of all types of music; all my friends say I have the most eclectic tastes, so I wanted to incorporate that within my show. I have many friends who are in bands or produce music in Brighton and find it difficult to get the recognition they deserve, so I felt that people should have somewhere to go to check out all the amazing new artists emerging from the streets of Brighton. Although Brighton is one of the most musically creative cities in the country I didn’t want to leave out other great relatively unknown artists, so I also thought I could occasionally show bands and solo artists from elsewhere as long as their music videos were creative and original. As I started making On The Verge I felt that it could be fun to sporadically add in some classic songs and fun, original current pop here and there. On The Verge is a fun music TV programme showcasing up-andcoming talent, original music videos and everything Brighton. It began in March 2015 and is currently on its 30th episode. Throughout the shows we have seen some amazing Brighton talent including rock bands Sweet Jonny and Dirty Weekend In Brighton, rap stars Rum Committee and fun pop acts Mirika and Kitten And The Hip. On The Verge also shows original and interesting videos from Lily Allen, Rizzle Kicks and Fatboy Slim alongside some classics by the likes of The Beatles and The Kinks. With

The Music Of Barry Mills is a classical music show composed entirely by the amazing Barry Mills. Local classical artists perform his pieces at Brighton and Hove High School, covering everything from violin and piano solos to saxophone and percussion. If you’re a fan of classical music you should check this show out. This week’s show is upbeat with a saxophone and piano duo as well as a percussion section, in contrast to some calmer episodes such as next week’s harp duo and beautiful piece, ‘Raindrops, Ripples, Rainfall’. So far there are 11 episodes this season but we hope to make more. I hope you enjoy the shows; you can catch On The Verge at 11pm Wednesday and repeated 11.30pm Monday and 2am Fridays for all those coming in after a night out! The Music Of Barry Mills shows Sundays at 6.30am, 1pm and 5.30pm and Tuesday at 5.30pm. There will also be an extra On The Verge this week on Wednesday at 5pm for Children In Need.
such eclectic stylings, On The Verge has something for everyone. On The Verge is always looking for new artists and videos so if you have an interesting song or a fun video please send them to onthevergemusicvideos@gmail.com and we will try to get you on. This week we have a special Children In Need episode which includes a song by Teen Aid UK who have brought out their single in time for Children In Need on 13th November as well as classic Children In Need song, ‘Perfect Day’. Alongside this we have newcomer Jonny White who enlisted the help of Brighton legend, ‘Disco Pete’ for his video and Chungking’s lovely video for ‘Beautiful World’ as well as Techno artist Cristian Vogel and a special appearance for Lorde. After I started making On The Verge I had so much fun that I thought I’d make another show, bringing the emerging new classical music that’s coming out of our city right now to the attention of everyone. channel 159 or at thelatest.tv

ow lovely it was to see my dear friend Paco for a beer at pub du Vin and an excellent meal at The Chilli Pickle. Paco has recently left our shores to return to Spain and to open a cafe in Valencia. No ordinary cafe this but one for lovers of board games. La Base Secreta Café is his latest project in a string of games related activity that includes an online magazine and TV shows. He has unlimited energy and enthusiasm – I envy that energy these days as mine flags. I am though a keen board game player and wish that his cafe was here so I could see him more often and attempt to thrash him at Catan or Ticket To Ride. These days my activity in the gaming sense seems to be almost solely confined to playing Scrabble online. Right now I have thirteen games on the go against a variety of friends. Some of them are a good match and we win an equal amount of times. Some though are demons, devil players who have a terrifying ability to play words that I have never even heard, leave aside knowing what they mean. So it was with great pleasure that a few days ago I actually beat him. I have beaten him a few, and I mean a few times, but this time it was a thrashing. Not only did I beat him, I beat my own best word score with a staggering 140 points. It was a simple word but it just happened to get the seven letter bonus with an M on a double letter tile and the whole word crossing two triple word tiles. It put a big smile on my face. There is a simple but unspoken etiquette to playing the online Scrabble game. If you have a seven letter word bonus or ‘bingo’ as they call it or when you win a game, you are asked if you would like to post the fact to facebook. No-one does, or at least no-one that I play with. How terribly British of us. And how terribly un-British of me now to boast of my 140 points. Of course the shine was taken off when I took a look at my Scrabble
I could free up a lot of space by shedding the lyrics to Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep, my in depth knowledge of our old currency and the scraps of Latin, a subject in which I was disgracefully poor but still litters the old grey matter. I do however like the fact that I can still quote great chunks of poetry, well not great chunks, but impressive bits and bobs. Maybe not a lifeenhancing skill but one that brings some pleasure, and pleasure sits fairly high on my list of priorities these days. It will come as no surprise that that list contains food, drink, theatre, music and of course family and friends. I like a challenge too, never say never say I. I mean what’s to lose? Well I guess there are lots of things to lose – my dignity for one thing. And of course I have to now take into consideration my aging body, some things are probably beyond my capacity for physical activity. I’m not going to go caving or rock climbing anytime soon that is for certain. Other stuff, bring it on. I can try, I can give it a go and, should I succeed or merely enjoy the experience I can choose whether it is something I would do again. If I fail I can right it off as done, never to be repeated but never a missed opportunity that I regret. I could wander off now and sing a clichéd bit of Sinatra – but funnily enough my mind library has had the good taste not to store those lyrics. Well not enough to make a decent job of singing it. Like my friend Paco and his compatriot Don Quixote, I will, lance in hand, charge at those windmills that capture my imagination – and in between I will continue to strive to beat my Scrabble nemesis more frequently and perhaps even top that 150 score – one lives in hope.

nemesis’ record only to discover that he had once scored a whopping 158 points. Now that really is hard to beat, although I was sure that someone out there would have done so. A quick question to Siri revealed the answer. On the 26th of October 2006 two men set three records for sanctioned Scrabble in North America: the most points in a game by one player, 830, the most total points in a game, 1,320, and the most points on a single turn, 365, for the play of QUIXOTRY (A wild, visionary idea, an eccentric notion or act; a quixotism if you are interested). Funnily enough few Scrabble players actually seem bothered whether or not they know the meaning of the words that they play, which to me seems rather a waste of an opportunity to expand one’s vocabulary. That said it does once again fill my head with rather useless information, a human filing facility that is already cluttered with rubbish, lousy song lyrics and random bits of science and geography that I really have no use for these days. If only the human brain had a waste bin-like facility where we could delete such stuff and make room for more important newer knowledge, and dare I say it, replace some of the stuff that has been proved wrong. channel 159 or at thelatest.tv

MADE IN CHELSEA SEASON 10 EP 2 o Spenny’s a gymnast these days. At the gymnasium, after a couple of jaunty flourishes mid-air, he backflips his way into a pile of foam. Sam’s there, sulking about Tiff. He ridicules the faceless entity that is Tiff’s Hong Kong lover. This belittlement would be justified if Sam didn’t follow it up with two of the poshest sentences ever uttered: “I’m sitting there, wooing Mr. Watto” and “I’ve been in Hong Kong macking on with Perce.” Mytton tells Jess that she’s playing Jamie like a fiddle and it needs to stop. He also warns her that if she carries on like this she’ll lose all of Jamie’s friends too. Panic flashes across her face at the prospect of not having a storyline. Lucy begins “operation spin Tiff’s cheating around so that Sam takes the blame for it”. You can tell she’s loving the dramatic potential because she’s using phrases like “Sam will take this to the grave” as if they’re all in ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’. Jamie calls Jess from Ibiza, where he’s supposed to be giving her space. He instead invites her out to join him and Emily, who is perched on a rock in the backdrop with her legs positioned as if she were a bare-breasted mermaid. Ollie gets his hair re-dyed after Binky did an inadequate job. While the dye sets, he calls JP. He lets his phone touch the dye, which really upsets me to be honest. Look after your things Ollie! JP is wary of the phone call but Ollie asserts that he simply wishes to have some man-on-man action. He actually means man-to-man. #freudianslip Over in Ibiza, Wheeze is all “it’s great to be away” despite the fact that they were in LA five minutes ago and that she doesn’t have a job. Lucy asks Sam if he’s being an enormous hypocrite and if he actually cheated on Tiff. She is referring to the photo that was taken of him on a sofa in a nightclub with a girl straddling him. Course he wasn’t cheating on Tiff, he asserts. Lucy tells him not to play the victim and he tells her he’s not scared of her. Ollie tells JP to get his act together Re: Binky. This doesn’t really help and if anything makes matters worse. Harney phones Steph and asks her out – to play tennis which basically involves Harney trying to assert his physical prowess. Lucy and James disclose, during the tennis match, that they time each other in the shower. I bet that’s not all they time. Harney tells Steph he’d be happy to clean out her pipes, upgrading the date from bad to hideous. Jess and Jamie have yet another talk about their ridiculous joke of a romance.Jess says that they’re not sexually compatible, which she screams into the swimming pool water as if she were pleading to Poseidon himself for guidance. Jamie is “done”. Let’s face it, he’s not. Tiff and Sam have it out. Sam can’t forgive her. Her mascara runs. I realise that I can count my back teeth with my tongue. WINE ME UP, LET ME GO

asting wine is a real treat, in fact these days I would rather spend an evening tasting wines than merely drinking wine. If that sounds mad then bear with me. I can remember a time when I was a serious quaffer, I liked a glass or two or should I say a bottle or three. I don’t think I had an alcohol problem as such, just a massive capacity. Since I started to take wine seriously though I have a smaller capacity – but a need for better and better wines. By this I do not necessarily mean more expensive wines, that is not always the way forward, far from it and this proved to be so true when I was invited to join a tutored tasting at myHotel organised by the Sussex Wine Shool. Jonny Gibson led the evening and it was a ‘meet the wine maker’ event featuring the wines of French winery Foncalieu and introducing Jean Michel and Marie-Annick who spoke to us about how the wines were produced and where the different grapes had been grown. Wine tasting can all get a bit sniffy and swirly and let’s face it downright poncy, but not here. Whilst there was plenty of the serious stuff, the science etc., the emphasis seemed to be on how well the stuff drank – which is how I like to assess the wines that I drink. Did I like drinking it or not, simple as that. Of course things are not really as simple as that, and whilst we tried a wide range of wines from this excellent maker we discussed the wines, what they might be well matched too, how strong they were and inevitably the price that one might expect to pay. Foncalieu make a variety of wines for what is known as the ‘On Trade’ which to the uninitiated is wines that are made available only to restaurants and not to wine merchants or supermarket chains. They do produce wines that we can buy there too and we tasted wines from all areas of their production. We tasted a lot of wine too, lots of grape varieties, colours and of course prices. They were all impressive too, delicious, balanced and fascinating. We chattered about what we liked and why we liked it and whilst doing so we nibbled on cheese and saucisson and bread, sharing in our passion for wine. Not everyone liked the same wines either, which is just as it should be, no two palates are alike, nor two pockets so it was good to see that Foncalieu produce excellent wines at a wide range of prices. I also enjoyed the free discussion of marketing as we looked at how their bottles are presented to appeal to very different audiences – all clever stuff.

This was an educational experience, we looked at grapes, regions, terroir and the like but never lost sight of the real joy of wine and that of course is in the drinking. One day I must find the time to do the Sussex Wine School’s advanced courses and perhaps get qualified but for now I will simply enjoy the drinking, in fact I have already booked to go to another of these events in December. Les Vignobles Foncalieu is a large co-op that produces wines across the Languedoc including IGP Pays d'Oc, but also from individual denominations like Corbières, Minervois, St Chinian, Fitou, Cabardès, Picpoul de Pinet and Pic St Loup and their wines are already getting wide recognition in the UK. Sussex Wine School is an independent wine education company led by wine educator Jonny Gibson. They have been running wine tastings and wine courses in Brighton since 2012. Their events are relaxed and fun and are aimed at people who enjoy wine and would like to learn more about it. No previous wine tasting experience is necessary. The tastings and courses are a great way to improve your confidence selecting wine, unravel the mysteries of wine lists and labels and learn how to pair wine with food. Themes include 8 week World of Wine, 4 week countryspecific courses, Fine wine, Food and wine and Champagnes. Sussex Wine School is also accredited to run WSET Level 1, 2 and 3 courses in Brighton. HOLLY WOULD BECOMING AN AUNTIE

I
have always loved being around little kids; I think they're hilarious. During sixth form I was a Maths and English tutor for school children and every week they had me in stitches, hearing about all of their little dramas and how losing their favourite pen was the end of the world. It was great; kids are great. As I'm one of the youngest in my family I never had any little siblings or cousins to look after at home, that's why when my sister announced she was expecting a baby I could barely contain my excitement. In fact, I didn't really contain my excitement. Everyone I spoke to was shown the baby scan photographs and told about my sister's growing bump. I went a bit overboard with baby shopping, how could I possibly walk past shops displaying tiny little outfits without buying them? They were so small and cute; I was counting down the days until I could meet the new addition of my family. I was going to be an auntie, which, I decided, was the most important job that I could possibly have. As we didn't know the baby's gender until it was born on October 12, it was referred to as 'Dot'. Being in the waiting room until visiting hours was the longest wait I’ve ever experienced. I would like to describe myself as a patient person... but if you speak to anyone
elebrities were spotted at the London to Brighton Veteran car run finish line in Brighton on November 1st. TV presenter Chris Evans, Ken Bruce and Alex Jones travelled from Hyde Park to Brighton on vintage buses filled with people raising money for the BBC's Children in Need. More than 400 veteran cars took part in the annual event.

“
that knows me they might disagree. I can't even wait for next week’s episode of Eastenders without googling the spoilers online! The new and overjoyed father eventually came out and met my parents, brother and I with the news that we had been waiting for: “It's a boy!!!” I had a nephew! A tiny little nephew: Baby Oscar, weighing 6lb 9oz. We peered into my sister's hospital room; she was sat up in her bed with a look of complete contentment on her face and a little wriggly pink lump in her arms. He was beautiful and everyday becomes more so. When I got to hold him for the first time I couldn't stop staring at him, how can
anything be so perfect? He has his mother's nose, his nanna's toes, his father's fair hair and his entire family's undivided attention. He slept peacefully in my arms and didn’t cry or wake up even when he was passed around to every aunt, uncle, grandparent and great-grandparent eager for a cuddle. My little nephew doesn’t know it, but he’s changed all of our lives. In the weeks since he was born I’ve been lucky enough to see quite a lot of him and I’ve taken to auntie duties willingly. I don’t even mind changing the baby boy's nappy, despite the constant risk that he'll wee in my face. I am just totally in love with him. Welcome to the world Oscar.

COMMUTABLE WILL HARRIS
GET ON BOARD BRIGHTON & HOVE BUSES
Turning into a vampire isn’t cool
A history of how our city’s buses have been named
I
am about two and a half months into my new life as a commuter when I discover I have turned into a vampire. It is all so easy, at first. The novelty of the early starts, the extra time my train journey affords me for emailing, reading, catching up on my correspondence (although somehow never entirely catching up on whatever work deadline is looming over me this week). And outside, unparalleled views over the Sussex countryside, morning mist rising from the wheat-fields as we speed past, over the Ouse Valley Viaduct, rattling towards the city. But with the unrelenting energy of a locomotive, the wheel of the year turns towards autumn, and then winter. Colour blazes in the fields and hedgerows, then dies, replaced by the dismal palette of lengthening nights and the first shards of frost biting at the carriage windows. And slowly but surely, deprived of the light, I become a creature of darkness. Sunlight. It may be one of the basic requirements for life, but when your life involves a regular commute to a 9-5, it’s one of the first things you have to give up. From October to March, you have to resign yourself to the sky being an inky black when you leave the house and no lighter when you get home. This presents a number of logistical problems, not least of which being how to conduct your ‘getting ready for work’ routine when your train leaves in half an hour and your partner is still fast asleep in bed. Or at least pretending to be, in the hope that you’ll stop clattering around and will eventually manage to exit through the bedroom door and not end up in the wardrobe. Wearing their shoes. Again. On top of that, there’s the vampirism. The unending cycle from bed to train to office to train to bed (with maybe a pit-stop at John Lewis, if you’re lucky) means it’s easy for a commuter to end up deprived of UVA, pale of face and red of eye. I’m continually thirsty (you try drinking a cup of tea before a two-hour journey on a crowded train where leaving your seat to use the WC is tantamount to surrender). All I want to do is sleep through the day (to be fair, I’ve been battling that one since university). Plus I live in permanent fear that, unless I find some creative way to weave a gym membership into my new routine, my chest area will start to resemble Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Don’t be misled by my flippant tone. We’re not talking sexy, young-adultapproved vampires here. We’re not talking the captivating pallor or CGI sparkles of Robert Pattinson, Abercrombie-and-Fitch-does-the-undead. We’re not talking Buffy. When I look in the mirror, one of those who commute in the shadows, it is a death mask staring back at me, Max Schreck as Count Orlok. That’s not the worst of it. Pretty soon there might not be a reflection at all.
Deprived of the light, I become a creature of darkness

righton & Hove's buses have been named after notable deceased people with a connection to the area since 1999. The idea originated with the Company's Operations Director Paul Williams as the first double deck low-floor buses were due to be delivered. He suggested they be named after notable landmarks as a way of creating interest. Like all good ideas, once it had been nurtured it became even better – in this case by using bus fronts to honour notable names from local history. After all, landmarks might confuse passengers that the bus would travel to them, whereas the buses are given a real human feel by using names. And so since 1999, every new bus that has entered the fleet has been named. The main criterion for inclusion is that the deceased person made a significant contribution to the area or had a strong connection during their lifetime. As more contemporary names have been suggested another criteria is that the person has been deceased for at least a year. Suggestions are regularly submitted to be included, often with helpful biographic details and even photographs. These are all very much welcomed and are safely kept and logged in our pending files for consideration each time new buses are delivered. With the delivery of the new Coaster buses we had a Facebook vote on the naming of 12 of them as other names were ones selected for reuse, this generated a lot of interest and we hope to do that again for the next batch of new buses. After the project began in May 1999, the promoters of Brighton Marina's Walk of Fame suggested that some of the celebrities being honoured in paving stones in the Marina could also have a bus named after them. For a few years single deck buses on the Metro 7 route to the Marina each carried a local celebrity name included in the Walk of Fame but this practice ceased when those buses were sold. Money has also been raised for local charities by auctioning off a bus name to appear for a short period of time and special names have been carried to honour the league winning Albion teams and also HM The Queen and Prince Philip in their Golden Jubilee year. There have also been a few other special people that had the honour of their name on a bus for about a year, Adam Trimingham for instance who has been so helpful to us with background information for the project.

he International Space School Educational Trust (ISSET) is a registered UK charity that was founded in 1998. The aim of ISSET is to utilise space and space exploration to inspire and motivate people of all ages to believe that they can become what they want to be. ISSET run a range of programmes from summer schools to trips to NASA Space Centres, which accommodate for students, teachers and professionals. ISSET seeks to instil an appreciation of what humans can achieve and encourage people to make something of themselves, particularly in the careers in STEM areas. “ISSET does great work across the world. I know of no other organisation that is as effective in preparing people for future life in leadership and cutting edge careers such as space exploration, science and the technologies” says Jay Honeycutt, Former NASA Director of Kennedy Space Centre and President of Lockheed Martin Space Operations One of ISSET’s programmes is the Astronaut Leadership Experience (ALE), which has been constructed by astronauts & astronaut trainers, replicating aspects of an astronaut’s team building training to enable you to undergo similar leadership exercises to a NASA space shuttle crew. Founded in 2009 by Chris Barber, ALE takes students of all ages on remote wilderness expeditions, teaching them fundamental leadership principals. Training centres range from the Gobi desert, Norway, Innsbruck and the Lake District. ALE uses the outdoors to teach students about responsibility for themselves, their team & their surroundings. On your ALE course you'll learn how to make decisions, develop confidence, and work through challenges with your teammates. Overall, you'll work hard, have fun, and return home with leadership skills to last a lifetime. Another of ISSET’s programmes is Mission Discovery, which invites students to work directly with astronauts, astronaut trainers, rocket scientists, and NASA leaders for a week. Students spend the week learning from the Mission Discovery team, with the aim to design an experiment to be launched into space. Successful experiments will be performed aboard the International Space Station. Mission Discovery is proven to enhance students' scientific and technological skill set, while developing their innovation, teamwork and leadership abilities. Students will also learn how to plan, budget and present their ideas, all within the context of space research. In January 2014 the first Mission Discovery experiments were launched to the International Space Station, a groundbreaking event in British education, the first time ever that UK school students’ ideas were carried out in space. So far Mission Discovery has been hosted in the UK, Australia and the USA, with plans to expand further afield. If you are looking to offer something a bit more ‘out of this world’ for your professional leadership or team building programme; or you want something slightly more dynamic than going on a School Ski Trip, then I would recommend taking a look at ISSET’s website! Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) is a college offering sixth form, 11-16 years, youth centre, adult learning, community education, sports centre and pre-school. xcited to hear that Dynamite Gallery on Trafalgar Street is hosting a solo show by Sam Hewitt. We fell in love with Sam’s distinctive style back in 2009 when we interviewed him for the very first issue of Brighton’s Arty magazine. Too cool for conventional art school, he found his vocation via stints in performing arts, stilt walking and playing in a band for seven years.

Fortunately Hewitt realised that painting was what he should be doing. And now he works in oils, sketching and pencil, charcoal and photography. He works on top of old paintings, working against them to allow ‘accidents’, but also on inviolate surfaces with the accidents minimised. Having lived in Brighton since 1990, Sam is completely influenced by the city and describes its combination of light, spaces and people his constant muse. If you’re in the North Laine area, do go and experience his work first hand. It’s impossible to do justice to the amazing luminosity that brings to life the shadowy figures that cross his canvases. A must-see. Until 29 November. Don’t miss: In Farm Mews, Naked Eye Gallery is currently celebrating the natural world from a zoological perspective with its ‘ANIMAL’ exhibition. The show is a varied and dynamic blend of the photo real, the surreal and 3D work by renowned and respected artists Sara Abbott, Dylan Floyd, Susan Taylor, Lauren Alderslade and 3D ceramicist James Fenner among others. Pieces range from exotic beasts and extraordinary hybrid creatures to the quintessential English small mammals. Each artist has created an impressive body of work, each unique, all utterly charming in their own right – and fuelled by a shared passion for animals. ENTERTAINMENT JOE FULLER London Philharmonic Orchestra kick off their Saturday night season at the Dome
he London Philharmonic Orchestra's returning to Brighton Dome for its fifteenth season is a cause for celebration for the classical music lover. The Saturday night setting helps add to the atmosphere; you can have dinner with your gig partner and stroll to the Dome in crisp, autumnal air and make a lovely evening of it, with interval drinks and all.

The LPO also have a special place in my heart since they've been instrumental in fostering my love of classical music over the last few years. I took a friend who wasn’t particularly au fait with classical music to see Daniele Rustioni conduct two years ago for example and he was blown away by the startling rendition of the famous 'William Tell Overture'. The LPO are a vibrant, loud, invigorating orchestra that should win any over anyone who hasn’t yet witnessed the joyful power of live classical music. This Saturday sees them presenting a French-themed programme that was inspired by part of their London season (Musiciens français) which explores French music and culture. At the centre of the concert is Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major, a gorgeous jazz-inspired piece with a powerful, bolshy crashing opening movement and an irresistible Adagio assai part that is tranquil and evocative. I'm often moved by slower movements and this one is a real beauty, but one is soon pleasantly jolted by the short third Presto movement with distinct jazz harmonies and idioms. Listen to the wild, disparate, beautiful piece and be enthralled. Robin Ticciati (former Music Director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera) will conduct and BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artist Louis Schwizgebel will play the Ravel concerto. Schwizgebel has been described as an “insightful musician” by the New York Times and “already one of the great masters of the piano” by Res Musica so I'm really excited about hearing his performance of a fantastic piece of music. The programme will also feature some of Ravel's waltzes (known as Valses nobles et sentimentales) and Fauré's tragic suite of Pelléas et Mélisande that was created using incidental music from Maurice Maeterlinck's play of the same name. To finish we'll then be treated to Debussy's depiction of the sea, a vast, expansive, dramatic piece that was sketched in Eastbourne and should make for a rousing finale. STAGE ANDREW KAY FLYING HIGH Pirates of the Carabina take to the air at Brighton Dome this Christmas ot a lot of people know this but I once ran away to the circus. It’s not as dramatic as you might think, I didn’t have a row with my parents and sling a spotted handkerchief over my shoulder, far from it. I did though win a scholarship that allowed me to spend a whole summer working with circus people in both London and in Paris. Exciting stuff you might think and in many ways it was, but my physical skills were slight. I was not bad at fire eating and flame throwing and my escapology was passible, given that it was all trickery. In the end I found that my real forté was clowning, so not much has changed there. When it came to the tough stuff of circus though – the acrobatics, trapeze and high wire work – I was hopeles, truly useless. Which is why I have been thrilled in the last few years to see that these skills are back – and how! Which all brings me to an exciting Christmas show at Brighton Dome. A flying aerialist trying to iron her party-dress, a stagehand tangled in the decorations and stuntmen arguing (in the air) with the pesky festive lights? If that sounds just like any ‘normal’ family Christmas, then think again. This is Flown, the award-winning, magical and mesmerising show from contemporary circus company Pirates of the Carabina. The show heads to Brighton Dome this December for a crazy and chaotic Christmas, following a stunning performance as part of Brighton Festival 2014. Mixing comedy and chaos with bold physicality and live music, Flown invites audiences to come inside, to look backstage and delight in the absurdity of contemporary circus life. Fresh from a sell-out tour in Australia, Pirates of the Carabina are a motley crew of incredible acrobats, aerialists, musicians and stuntmen. Flown tells the tale of their attempts to get the show up and running in time for Christmas. Things go right… but plenty more goes wrong, as disagreements, fear and exhaustion threaten to ruin the festivities, with catastrophe just one move away. Accompanied by a roaring live band, it’s big, beautiful and bonkers and of course in the end, everything is Flown. Even the band! Turning whatever you think you know about the circus on its head, this show will captivate the whole family and leave audiences on the edge of their seats – it’s a perfect festive treat. Pirates of the Carabina (POC) are an internationally acclaimed contemporary circus company who specialise in theatrical, highly technical circus shows that combine aerial and physical performance with live music. Comprised of a crew of 13 highly experienced and committed circus artists, riggers, musicians and technicians from across the world, POC are known for their skilful embrace of both ground-based circus acts

The Maccabees – former Brightonians are back in town n the mid-2000s, Brighton proved to be the ideal launching pad for this much loved indie band, one who had initially sprung out of a loose South London scene that had included the likes of Jack Penate, Rumble Strips and Jamie T. "I went to Sussex, and most of the boys went to Brighton (uni). At first it was just a means of keeping the band together... we all dropped out pretty fast" laughs Felix White, guitarist with the band. "Brighton is where we got a deal, so we decided to stay for a few years, before migrating back to London." It's been quite a journey for the five piece, with four of the founder members still a part of the band; singer Orlando Weekes, brothers Felix and Hugo White, and bassist Rupert Jarvis, while drummer Sam Doyle joined in 2008. Synonymous with a particularly buzzy Brighton scene at the time that included British Sea Power and The Kooks, Hugo remembers their time here as the place where they wrote both their debut album, Colour It in, and

the 2009 follow up, Wall of Arms. "Brighton was a relief from growing up in London. It was somewhere that was a bit calmer for a while. It didn’t feel like anyone you knew had a job, everybody was just hanging out all day, and everywhere was just five minutes walk away. There were so many venues and so many bands, it was quite exciting for us. If we hadn't moved to Brighton I don't think we would have found that context for ourselves at that stage. It was only through word of mouth or whatever, filling out the Freebutt (infamous Brighton venue
that is no more) every other week or whenever that was, that was when labels came to see us and we found management." Named after flicking through a copy of the Bible – the original Maccabees were the leaders of a rebel Jewish army that seized Judea in 2nd century BC, and reasserted the Jewish religion – the band's third album Given To The Wild saw them reach their highest album chart placing (number four), as well as a Mercury Music Prize nomination. After a false start or two and thoughts of packing it in, the fourth album was finally delivered earlier this year, to much acclaim. Appearances at Glastonbury and as a special guest at Brighton's Great Escape helped to cement their return, and they'll be back in Brighton later this month. "It took a long time to work out what it was we were making," says Felix. "We almost had to relearn how to write as a band in a room again. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Mon 23 November, 7pm, £25

SYNTACTICALLY MANGLED id I tell you I saw a rat the other day? Well, I'm telling you now. I saw a rat the other day, scampering under one of those communal recycling bins, up near the golf course at Hollingbury. Huge, it was. Easily the size of our cat, I'd have said, although I may be exaggerating just a little, for not particularly comic effect. And it freaked the life out of me, it really did. I think I may even have screamed like a girl, although you're not allowed to say that anymore so I can't have done. Either way, it left me rather shaken. Not because it tried to sink its teeth into me, which I gather certain rodents have been known to do when they've caught sight of a tabloid TV critic, but because, on reflection, I don't think I've ever actually seen a rat in person before. To be fair, though, the council had tried to warn me. Pinned to the fence by those bins was a notice, written in something a bit like English, alerting users of this facility to the rodent infestation. "Please be aware not to throw away Waste food in this area," it had urged us, "as there is a rat problem around the bins and the back of the bins. They are feeding from waste food that is being left on the floor. We need to discourage them away from this area. Thankyou." And so I'd taken a good, long look at this notice and responded like any reasonable human being would have done in such circumstances. "A capital W for 'waste'?" I'd muttered. "What the hell's that all about?” And 'please be aware not to throw away...'? Why do council types always have to speak like that, in that syntactically mangled gibberish? What's wrong with 'please don't throw away'? As for 'we need to discourage them away', well, I'm sorry but that's just plain wrong. What we need to be doing is encouraging these rodents away, luring them to somewhere they'll feel more at home." So, yes, the council people had done their best to warn me, only to make matters worse. Distracted by the clumsy wording, I'd failed to heed their key message, that there were actual real-life rats nearby. Hence my shock when I actually saw one. Here's my suggestion, then, to spare others a similar fate. It's really just a gently reworded version of that original notice, driving its message home with a wee bit less risk of distraction: "Dear food-dumper. You are a selfish, anti-social moron. Lots of love, Brighton & Hove City Council xxxx." I think that would probably do the trick. Mike Ward is the TV Critic of the Daily Star and the TV Editor of the Daily Express Saturday magazine. Priscilla Queen of the Desert Theatre Royal Brighton, 3 November 2015 ★★★★★ What a wonderful, first class, foot tapping, sing-along of a show this is and this time with a truly extraordinary cast, from the principals – well the convention would be to say down – but there is no down to this production which would not be out of pace or place in the West End! Packed not only with great songs and dance routines it is also crammed with heart – and much of that heart comes from the leads. Duncan James need never feel ‘Blue’ as he delivers his part with such energy, such great voice and yes, with real heart. Simon Green makes a very believable Bernadette, fragility balanced with balls – if you will pardon that illusional mistake. Adam Bailey is equally convincing and thrilling as Felicia, the bitchy spoilt kid with a tender underbelly. Philip Childs is Bob, and his performance is heartwarmingly tender too. With so many starring roles it is hard to keep piling on the superlatives – but you simply have to! Costumes, costumes of eye-watering impact, feather upon feather, sequin upon sequin and a string of visual puns that elicits a constant flow of oohs and aahs from an audience that is totally enraptured by the pure spectacle of the show. And Priscilla is back for this tour, a proper bus and not a flimsy skeletal prop as before. Two final accolades, firstly a company that can sing and dance up a storm, but who, throughout, manage to capture the real drama of the various roles asked of them, and last but not least to Frankie Milward who plays Benji and brings a tear to almost every eye in the house, I know that I had more than one. Priscilla is a rich and saucy confection, packed with rude humour, rude jokes, camp… well camp everything – but at heart it is a morality play with a very strong message for us all about tolerance, equality, compassion and love. I loved it. Andrew Kay
Diversity – Up Close and Personal Brighton Centre, 1 November 2015, ★★★★★ With their motto of: Dream, Believe, Achieve, Ashley Banjo’s crew are not just talented dancers but also fantastic role models. The choreography had the group’s trademark humour, razor sharp moves, jaw-dropping tricks and feel-good factor. However, in the final part of the evening it became a little too intense, even for loyal fans, as the motivational messages became almost evangelical. Still there was much to love in this slick show packed with lights, lasers and live music. Diversity were supported by a popular cast of dancers and musicians recruited from TV talent shows and the family crowd screamed with approval throughout. Elizabeth Hughes
Dan Lees – Brainchild Otherplace @ The Basement, 25 October 2015, ★★★★★ ‘Play’ is a marvellous thing that, once past a certain age, tends to be dismissed and diminished. Thank you to Dan Lees who, in true clownish tradition, brought back ‘play’ for an hour to his entire audience. Mixing gentle interactivity with sounds, mime, shape and costume, Lees tenderly tickles and lightly wrong-foots us into a place of unselfconscious playfulness and laughter, using – amongst other things – mime building blocks and nonsense jazz language. An engaging hour reacquainting us with the sweeter side of fun. Victoria Nangle watch on
