CITY GIRL
IN THE CITY
VICTORIA NANGLE o. No, no, no, no, no. It’s a simple thing to write down but one of the most difficult things for me to say outright, even in the simplest of circumstances. When I was a kid my mother sat my brother and I down and told us we needed to learn how to say ‘no’, loudly and clearly. I was about nine, my brother seven and he spent the next, what felt like, a week and a bit practicing his ‘no!’ at great volume all around our flat to his own glee and everyone else’s growing impatience. However, I still struggled. A “no” on its own always seems so cold. It’s “no, thank you” or a “no, but...”, as if to qualify or pretty-up the rejection of the thing that I don’t want to do or to have. And it’s not always that I don’t want to do the thing, sometimes it’s simply that I can’t – which always feels like an excuse masquerading as a reason. The thing is, a clear “no” is just as welcome as a “yes’’ – it’s the pussyfooting around that causes so much growling and discontentment. And that’s something I love that I’ve discovered. I don’t even need to give the elaborate reason I’ve been preparing so as to calm my self-imposed guilt. No one cares. They just want to know that I can be relied upon, one way or the other. I still steal myself to lay down my boundaries, to turn down an invitation, or stop someone crossing a line. But for the most part it’s taken with no malice and actually – on a few lovely ocassions – with gracious acceptance that I just need a quiet night in. I wouldn’t be much company in a knackered state anyway, and surely it’s better to see me when I’m on form. Besides which, when I say ‘yes’ it means I’m really making that decision positively. I DO want to eat your marbled shorbread – ooh, yum! I DO want to hang out on the beach with you and watch the waves crash as the sun sets, I really DO. I’m not just saying it to be nice. I’m not that nice. My time is precious, and so is yours, so I respect both by only committing to spending both when it’s an idea I wholeheartedly agree with and can commit to. I also respect your cooking, your offers of a lift, your drinking companionship, and everything else I’m offered. But I won’t accept it without hesitation. It’s all too good to be taken for granted. So for now, I say ‘no’, and look forward to my ‘yes’ times too.

NOT SO HANSOM NOT SO HACKNEYED
Follow me: latestandrew ANDREWKAY100
aving given up on running a car myself, please note all you Greens, I now rely on walking, buses, lifts from friends and taxis. I can remember well my first ever ride in a taxi – I was 18, yes 18 years old. Where and when I grew up taxis were not a part of normal life so it took a move to London to make me really aware of what a joy a taxi ride could be. It was all black Hackney carriages back then or were they Hansom, I never did get to grips with what the difference was. They were the shiny black scarab beetles of London’s roads and once bitten by that bug I was a taxi lover for ever. Oh I know that people relate apocryphal tales of taxi woes, but I never had much problem with them. On the whole they were honest sorts who would take you from A to B in the most convenient manner. Whiners should note that distance is not the defining part of how a cabby makes his wage, but the number of journeys they make. So you get the message, I like taxi drivers and I like taxis. Or do I? Taxi drivers I still rate, I would never dis them here, after all my picture is at the top of the page, but really, taxi drivers do a pretty good job. The thing I dislike right now is the tank. Yes, tank, and I think most of you will know what I mean. The huge people carriers that have been brought into service because they can accommodate wheelchairs. This directive comes from the city council, and I am sure that it is well intentioned, really I am. I mean after all, who could imagine that the city council would bring into play an action that would not be in the people’s best interests? But these tanks, I simply cannot get on with them. Indeed I cannot get on them or in them should I say, and getting out again is no easy matter. The things are too high. The steps that are meant to aid boarding seldom work and once onboard the seats are so far back
get the bus and right now I am being nagged to do so. A fellow columnist wrote recently about his Apple Watch, how he got one, then sent it back, then got another. I waited a while before getting one, just to see what the general opinion would be – and on the whole it has been good, especially from all us Apple users. How that brand divides society, lovers and haters locked in a fight over operating systems and the like – life’s too short, make your choice and get on with it. I bought my Apple Watch, ironically the sports model, In Manchester from what I call Church but you may better know as The Apple Store, I think more people attend Apple stores these days than churches or at least it looks that way. Once bought I spent the first week discovering what it will do and I have to say I am pleased with it, it is fairly easy to navigate, has functions that make life nice and simple and it tells the time too, far easier than having to dig a phone out of a bag or pocket. It also nags, nag nag nag, all day long, tapping my wrist and telling me to stand up and walk about for a minute to achieve my goal. It tells me how may active minutes there have been, which is not many as I sit at this desk most of the day, and politely suggests that I get busy. This is of course the Apple way, politely encouraging me to get up and get moving. I also have it formatted so that I can call a Brighton cab from my wrist, nifty and at the same time defeating the watch’s efforts to get me to take more exercise. I really have no issue with disabled facilities, I grew up helping to looking after a disabled relative and know only too well how difficult it can be to get around and to gain access to places – I just don’t see that the turquoise and white tanks are doing that good a job.

that in manoeuvering to get there I quite often miss and end up on the floor. I’m not disabled by any means, but as I get older I am not as supple as I once was and this whole process is uncomfortable, I dread to think how less physically able people manage to board. And as if that was not enough the sliding doors have their own issues. Firstly they are heavy, really heavy and so hard to move that quite often the driver will have to get out and close the door for you.
They were the shiny black scarab beetles of London’s roads and once bitten by that bug I was a taxi lover for ever
“
If like me you live on a steep hill then opening that door becomes a Herculean task, expecially if you need to lock it into the open position because of a hill. Heaven help you if you don’t as the damned thing will slide back on you trapping you under its weight. Am I alone in thinking that these giant people carriers are simply not a suitable solution? I know that from some of the drivers that pick me up feel the same. How long will it be before someone is disabled by a vehicle that has been designated disabled friendly? Of course I could just walk and channel 159 or at thelatest.tv

MADE IN CHELSEA SEASON 10 EP 3 llie and Binky are visiting a race track where a blonde woman is burning rubber (not literally). Her name is Emma, and Ollie is all a-titter over her. It transpires that he is in some sort of romantic entanglement with her, despite the fact that he seems frightened of her, she doesn't really acknowledge him and there is approximately -0.992% chemistry between them. Toff is also all a-titter. She has also found someone to love and adore. "But has he inherited yet?" asks Mark Francis, which really is the only thing that matters here. We were all thinking it, Marky. Steph is telling Wheeze and Rosie about Harney and how she "thinks he's a freak right now". Wheeze points out that she did geography with him. Who didn’t you do geography with, Wheeze? Tiff hasn't moved since last week from her position on the sofa. Nor has she wiped her mascara. She also doesn't know what the term "cardinal sin" means. She is whining to Lucy about Sam and his new set of teeth. A little more light is shed on this odd Emma girl who has materialised from thin air as Ollie's apparent squeeze. Apparently she and Ollie are snogging and dry humping and he's taken her up the OXO. Binky then goes on the hunt for Emma's opinion of Ollie by following her to the gym and mounting the neighbouring exercise bike. Basically, Emma's not feeling it, we can all tell. Harney takes a far from enthusiastic Steph on a date. He tells her in detail about how he used to only go out on a Friday, but now he goes out on a Saturday too. I'm sure it's all she can do to stop herself jumping him right there. Ollie takes Emma fishing. There's a bit of role reversal going on given that he's wearing skimpy pink shorts and she's dressed like the killer from Urban Legend. Rosie has decided that she needs an intern. She's asking Richard Dinan for advice. Turns out he's the man Toff fancies. I also suspect he has indeed inherited. Millie needs to really get a storyline lest she is axed, so she decides to start telling everyone that Sam has no right to be angry with Tiff because he also cheated on her. Whilst checking out a pub that Clive Watson is adding to his property portfolio, Lucy and Tiff run into Millie and learn of this indiscretion. They are shocked to their very core. Steph's giving Richard the glad-eye at Ollie's dinner party, much to Toff's aggravation. Ollie does a really embarrassing toast, which Spenny interrupts wearing too much Fake Bake. Ollie then makes a mental note to have whoever did the seating chart fired given that they have sat Spenny next to Emma. He then chats her up, while Steph does the same with Richard by discussing the fact that they have both lost pets to cancer. Millie tells Jamie that she doesn't actually know who Sam has allegedly cheated on Tiff with, despite her stating earlier in the episode that this mystery woman is one of her closest friends. Nice friendship. Then the Watsons descend upon Sam and get all up in his face, which seemingly dislodges Sam's new teeth forcing him to only talk out the side of his mouth. ANDREW KAY DINES OUT
STEAK OUT
Follow me: latestandrew ANDREWKAY100
alloween came along like all things seem to these days as a full weekend of celebration rather than one night. Brighton city centre was filled with fabulous costumes and drunken revellers whilst the quieter streets were haunted by children hell bent on ruining their teeth. I chose to go into town and join Mr L for dinner. I had no idea where but charged him with the task of choosing somewhere I could have steak and preferably chips. I don’t make chips at home and sometimes needs must. The next thing I knew I had an email confirming a booking at Grow 40. I confess to having neglected to get along to this smart looking North Laine eatery for far too long – and now I feel very guilty. We started with a glass of champagne, a welcome treat, and I ordered a bottle of Primitivo to go with my steak. I was so fixed on that steak and Mr L assured me that I would get one. First out for me was a wild rabbit terrine (I’d be pretty wild if I was made into a terrine) with pickles and sourdough toast. It was very good, gamey and full flavoured with an excellent texture. The pickles were good too with a nice chutney and ribbons of cucumber and rhubarb. Mr L went mad and ordered the scallops which looked very good indeed with a homegrown beetroot puree, dried sea lettuce and smoked roe coulis. There is a garden on the restaurant’s roof that provides some of the kitchen ingredients, a nice idea that must create a lot of extra work for the team. Mr L then chose the burger and a mightly burger it was too. They offer a burger and lobster deal which is surprisingly good value in a world where lobster is invariably very expensive. I could easily have been tempted had I not got my eyes set on that steak. Proprietor Steve asked me how I would like it done, rare of course, and that is exactly what came, a perfectly cooked slab of rump that had been expertly seasoned. It was excellent, packed with flavour, totally fulfilling my desire. And the chips were good too, crisp, piping hot and salty. As if all this were not enough there was a bowl of excellent béarnaise sauce. I love the unctuous comfort of well made béarnaise, the gentle aniseed kick of tarragon and the opportunity to dip chips. I know, bad behaviour but too

delicious to resist. Things were going swingingly well so when we were asked if we would like dessert we could not refuse. The dessert menu was enticing but our splendid waiter declared that the best was Mickael’s sweetcorn cake. Mickael is the chef and had done so well so far we both gave the cake a whirl. Oh my, what a dessert, the moist cake was a revelation that just kept on giving, the plate was scattered with salt caramel popcorn and on top a fascinatingly moreish scoop of tarragon yoghurt ice-cream. I ate it slowly, not wanting the delight to end and I may well have to bribe the recipe out of the chef somehow, I have to make that cake! With that we also drank a glass of the recommended Gewürztraminer. An extravagance yes, but that pud deserved it. And yes we even went on to have a final glass of red wine to round off our splendid dinner, that’s just the way Mr L and I roll sometimes. I walked home feeling very happy indeed. Grow 40 offers a wide range of menus and deals and as well as the restaurant they also run a wine club which uses an upstairs room as a cosy private members club – I must look into that very soon! I’m rather taken with this place as by now you must be able to see. I like their ethics, the local produce, the wine club, the garden on the roof and all that stuff – but what I like most is the fact that the chef can cook well and at the end of the day, that is what marks out a restaurant as not just being good but being way above good. CELEB CITY
HOLLY WOULD DECK THE HALLS s my name might suggest, I love Christmas. But every year when the signs start to appear that Christmas is on its way, there’s an unspoken rule that you can’t talk about it immediately. “Halloween hasn’t even happened yet!” My friends said to me as I looked at Christmas cards in October. “You can’t feel Christmassy until after Guy Fawkes Night!” Although I disagree with this and could probably feel Christmassy all year round, I’ve put present buying on hold and am trying my hardest to repress my festive enthusiasm. When is it an appropriate time to talk about Christmas? The people that moan about it being “too soon” are probably the same people that run around Churchill Square on Christmas Eve with panicked expressions on their faces and bags full of last minute shopping. If I’m not allowed to talk about Christmas yet, I will at least embrace winter being on its way… If there’s one thing you cannot escape from, in England, it’s the cold. I’m not moaning either, the colder the better! I hate the hot weather and all throughout the summer I had considered moving to Antarctica. But now, at last, my favourite season is approaching and I could not be happier to welcome back the icy mornings. There are three things that I really love about winter. Number one is that it’s the perfect excuse for cosy nights in. One of my favourite things in the world is listening to and watching a thunderstorm from my window when I’m all snug and warm indoors. Blankets, candles and movies; is there anything more ideal than that?

Number two is the clothes that winter brings. When else can you wear fluffy pink socks, undetected, to work? It’s the season of boots, polo neck jumpers, thick coats and faux fur. You can wear as many layers as humanly possible and still look stylish. The third thing I love about winter is the warm drinks that definitely don’t do my diet any
favours. How can you say no to a gingerbread latte? There is nothing that says “winter” more than sitting in a coffee shop with your friends and warming yourselves up with a hot drink. So whilst it may be too early for the countdown to Christmas, we can at least start the countdown to talking about Christmas.

COMMUTABLE WILL HARRIS
GET ON BOARD BRIGHTON & HOVE BUSES
Is it acceptable to eat cereal on a train?
Wakehurst Place
N
ot yoghurt pot man... Not yoghurt pot man... This is the refrain that runs through my head daily as the train pulls in to Haywards Heath, mental fingers crossed that the empty seat next to me will be filled by a kindly grandmother type or handsome city gent. Anyone, in fact, but yoghurt pot man. One of the many benefits of commuting from a terminus like Brighton is that – save those days when Thameslink inexplicably decides to split its service in two like the Paul Daniels of train operators – you generally get a seat in the morning. The flip-side of this is that, as your train speeds northward, stopping off at every notch on the Sussex commuter belt, you can never guarantee who will take the seat next to you. More often than not you’ll get lucky, and it’ll be someone just like you; someone who takes care to respect your personal space and manages not to display a single irritant behaviour. Other times, it may be a minor but manageable annoyance; an elbow over the armrest, a head nodding towards your shoulder in sleep. Then there are those times when the person sat next to you presents a more serious challenge to your early morning zen. The snorers, the snufflers, the aggressive man-spreaders. The mobile phone terrorists who make up in volume what they lack in intelligent conversation (East Croydon is a hotbed for this kind of behaviour). Plus yoghurt pot man. I know two things about yoghurt pot man. 1) He lives in Haywards Heath. 2) At some unidentified moment on the timeline of his life, he was seized by the bright idea that he could save time in the morning, perhaps scraping an extra quarter of an hour in bed, if he started eating his breakfast on the train. Out of a large yoghurt pot. While I sit next to him and try not to barf. I do realise that I’m probably doing this man a great disservice. I have no doubt he is a good person, a loving husband, a pillar of the Haywards Heath community. The trouble being it’s difficult to reflect on these things objectively when the air is filled with the wet, slopping sounds of a mouth full of cereal and the surprisingly invasive odour of a stranger’s semiskimmed. And don’t even get me started on the scraping of the pot. Taken objectively, of course, almost every unwelcome train behaviour is an act of innocence. It’s a free country, and there is no private in public transport. I understand all these things. But I also understand there is something about being forced into a confined space with strangers that acts as an amplifier, transforming even the most minor of quirks into nothing short of a major diplomatic incident. So I will never be the person who eats my breakfast on the train. I will wait until I get to work, and eat my breakfast in a meeting, oblivious to the stares of my co-workers, like a normal person.
Don’t even get me started on the scraping of the pot

JOHN NAPIER THE INTERVIEW
THE ACCLAIMED THEATRE DESIGNER TALKS ABOUT HIS WORK TO ANDREW KAY ohn Napier is a theatre designer of international acclaim with a huge string of credits to his 50 year career and a list of awards to match. His work encompasses almost every theatrical form – dance, opera, drama, musicals, film and even a Las Vegas magic show. Napier’s innovative and distinctive style is responsible for some of the most iconic designs in theatre: the horses in Equus, the barricades in Les Misérables, the helicopter in Miss Saigon, the outsized junkyard in Cats, and of course Starlight Express. His work is now being celebrated in a major exhibition Stages at the Towner Gallery in Eastbourne.

What was your first experience of theatre? My first live theatre performance, was in fact dance – The Martha Graham Company who were having a season at Sadler’s Wells and it was the first indication that design for theatre did not have to be conventional, as she was using a sculptor, Noguchi as her collaborator. The second was The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny by Brecht which was designed by the great Ralph Koltai who was to become my mentor several years later. When did you decide that theatre design was what you would pursue and make your career? Probably on seeing the production of Ubu Roi as the Royal Court that was designed by David Hockney. I realised that The Barricades: Les Misérables theatre and art could co-exist.
t doesn’t matter, in Ibring whatever genre they all their own challenges
Was there a breakthrough production that really got you noticed? Indeed that production for me was The Ruling Class, a play by Peter Barnes. Embarrassingly the sets were applauded.
How important are industry and public awards? They’re not – but it is great to be acknowledged.
and you have to rise to them What have been the biggest creative influences on your work and your life – artists, musicians, directors, family, tutors? My art teacher at school, Mr Birchill & Ralph Koltai.
As an artist do you still get pleasure from drawing and painting, outside of your professional life? Big yes – I ran a life drawing class from my London studio for 25 years.
You have worked on many types of production, serious Gus: Cats Rocky: Starlight Express drama, comedy, musicals, opera… is there one area that you like more – either from the point of view of it being a new challenge or simply from the pleasure it brings? It doesn’t matter, in whatever genre they all bring their own challenges and you have to rise to them. The one thing that does bring me pleasure is sometimes when you have to improvise on the spot and make decisions that transform the production.
How much of what you do requires in-depth research? As long as a piece of string…
channel 159 or at thelatest.tv
What was the best piece of theatre design you have seen, that you did not work on? It's a long, long time ago - the Insect play, designed by Josef Svoboda
Work in theatre can be very consuming, how do you relax? I go home and shag my wife... and occasionally read a book!
Clearly a production is a joining of minds, director with designer and cast, but have you ever felt that you would like to direct or even perform? I have directed a huge Las Vegas magic show, I’m not sure how this came about other than, Siegfried and Roy, the magicians I was working for, refused to have anyone else direct it as I had conceptualised it. As to performing – I once tried to instigate a production at The Other Place in Stratford in which the company would pick from a hat in which their role in the production would be defined. I thought it would be an interesting way to learn about each others’ talents… unfortunately everyone declined the offer!
channel 8,
What was the last production that you saw? The last production I would like to admit to having seen was, Jerusalem
And which is the production that has given you most satisfaction – a production that you did design? Nicholas Nickleby
Is it always a pleasure or do some projects become less than pleasurable? Occasionally because one’s ambition for the production cannot be met or serviced, for either financial or time constraints – it’s mildly less pleasurable.

Are there any works that you would like to be asked to design? Who knows?
If you had not become a successful theatre designer what else might you have liked to be? A rock star. How many projects do you do in a year? Now, none – too busy sculpting. In the past, it varied from one a month to one a year – depending on the production’s scale. What are you currently working on? Me. enewable energy is getting a facelift where science and technology forms a beautiful union with the arts. The German company Rawlemon believe in producing energy where people actually live: in our cities. They will do this “without sacrificing beauty, the transparency of a window, or a comfortable living environment.” As quoted from their website, “we all know that the sun is the greatest sustainable energy source on earth. Since more than over 40 years [sic] the Technology helps us to transform this source into power. The problem is the low efficiency: 80% of installed PV panels worldwide have a performance of 15% or lower; but if the panels are not tracked with the sun, the average of annual tilt losses add up to minus 70%.” Rawlemon have now designed a Spherical Sun Power Generator that can “squeeze more juice out of the sun”, even during the night hours and in low-light regions. The technology combines spherical geometry principles with a dual axis tracking system, allowing twice the yield of a conventional solar panel in a much smaller surface area. The Spherical Sun Power Generator stores energy during daylight hours and can even collect energy from the moon during night hours. It is interesting that we are now turning our sights to the moon for energy. The moon has obviously also played a part in generating tidal wave technology. As stated by the Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Programme “the UK must diversify and expand its renewable and indigenous sources of electricity. “It needs large-scale solutions that can be connected quickly and deliver long-term, low-cost, reliable and predictable power to our communities. Tidal lagoons meet these criteria and are a vital part of our future energy mix. The proposed Tidal Lagoon Power Plant in Swansea will use ocean tides to power 155K homes. It is furthermore an opportunity to develop a world-leading tidal range industry in the UK.” Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) is a college offering sixth form, 11-16 years, youth centre, adult learning, community education, sports centre and pre-school. First big date for the diary is MADE at the Corn Exchange on 20-22 November. It’s the 10th anniversary for the city’s annual contemporary craft and design fair, and you can look forward to original and exceptional work from the best local and national makers. 21-22 November also marks the start of Brighton’s Christmas AOH festival, with four weekends to trail around the houses and studios that open their doors and provide art lovers the chance to browse and buy direct from the artists. With its focus on quality and value for money, there’s truly something for everyone. In the South Lanes, Kellie Miller Arts is celebrating AOH and her gallery's second birthday with the opening of her winter exhibition showcasing four new artists including Alison Rankin’s twist on still life paintings (featured here). ENTERTAINMENT JOE FULLER Cinecity presents Adventures in World Cinema inecity is an exciting few weeks for film fans of all stripes. It's a brilliant opportunity to relax at events with like-minded culture buffs and see strange, bewildering, moving films, often with live music or a Q&A to further enrich the experience. I spent a fun evening at the Basement three years ago dedicated to the work of JG Ballard for example, which featured some engrossing film shorts he'd made that I would probably never have seen otherwise. Sitting on cushions on the floor listening to live tape loops made for the type of memorable evening that one can only get from arts festivals like Cinecity. There's a broad variety of films on offer including many first features, such as Son of Saul, winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes. Described a “horror movie of extraordinary focus and courage” in a five star review from the Guardian, the harrowing film from Hungarian director Laszlo Nemes sees poet Geza Rohrig playing a morally torn 'Sonderkommando' in Auschwitz-Birkenau who is forced to exterminate his own people. (Duke of York's, Fri 20 Nov, 6 :30pm) Thankfully it’s not all harrowing though, one film that caught my eye is Sex and Broadcasting, a documentary about New Jersey's WFMU (a world-renowned independent community radio station). Fans such as Matt Groening pay homage to the station while long-serving station manager Ken Freedman discusses what it’s like keeping eccentric radio types wrangled. (Sallis Benney Theatre, Wed 18 Nov, 7:30pm) There's also a free screening of Nothing Can Turn Into A Void on Wednesday (Sallis Benney Theatre, 6pm) which delves into British artist Vicki Bennett's approach of re-editing found footage ahead of her live

There's not enough spare words in this column to fully explain the premise of the bizzare The Forbidden Room, but it involves co-director Guy Maddin's interactive seances project. Maddin channeled the spirits of lost silent films through improvised live 'happenings' in Paris and Montreal. Experimenting with super-imposition and colour-timing (see picture) on over 4,000 hours of raw video have resulted in a delirious, deranged film that has an impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. (Duke of York's, Sun 22 Nov, 6:30pm) A quick mention should go to Absurd Utopias: New Futures From China (Lighthouse, Thurs 19 Nov, 7pm) which is a special screening for Chinese animation and video artists. Check out the bright artwork online to get a taste of the fascinating animation styles, and there will also be a Q&A with curator Beth Troakes. Albert Hammond Jr – The Strokes guitarist has just released his best solo album yet eaven and hell are within us and all the gods are within us. They are magnified dreams, and dreams are manifestations in image form of the energies of the body in conflict with each other. That is what myth is." So has said Joseph Campbell, the mythologist, in his book The Power of Myth. For Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr, the idea of myth and myth making is at the nub of what his third solo album, Momentary Masters, is about: "The record is about how, with time, you gain knowledge but simultaneously lose your innocence.. It's about finding a new curiosity in life… "What he (Campbell) has to say from what he has learned in his life is amazing," says Hammond, whilst on tour in America. "It feels poetic and romantic but it's not falsifying truths. That's why people like to tell stories, especially in music, to embellish things and it becoming myth." I suggest to Hammond that Momentary Masters is about
Momentary Masters is also based on the famous image of Planet Earth, taken from deep space; a 'pale blue dot'. "The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena", says Carl Sagan in his 1994 book Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Future in Space, in which he shares his thoughts on the deeper meaning of the image. “Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot”. "I like the idea of shadow work," says Hammond. "People you know have this good side, but they also have this other side. I got to see mine so clearly. To be given that opportunity to try to use them both to become whole… all our emotions are felt very similarly even if we've done different things. And sometimes there's some story telling, mix things up…" The myth making continues… The Old Market, Thurs 26 Nov, 7pm, £12.50, theoldmarket.com

Part of me wants to be serious, part of me wants to make fun of myself," he laughs.

ADELE VS THE BEATLES dele must be pretty chuffed right now: a new single topping the charts, a new album inevitably doing likewise, and half the planet thrilled that she's back making music. And great, she deserves it. Not only is she a talented woman with an amazing voice and a gift for writing fine songs, she also seems like a thoroughly decent human being. But I wonder if she happened to catch ITV's one-off special The Nation's Favourite Beatles Number One. And, if so, whether it left her just a wee bit deflated. Because, having seen it myself, I defy anyone not to draw to the same conclusion as I did. Namely, that the Beatles really were SO good, that their music really was SO groundbreaking, that every act that's followed – yes, seriously, every act, in the 45 years since they split up – must know, deep down, that they can never really match them. I've singled out Adele not to be mean but purely because she's the most currently prominent example of someone who's trying – writing her own songs, performing them, doing her own thing. Obviously a billion other solo acts and bands have taken the same route over the years and, like her, done very nicely out of it. And yet can any of them honestly say they've come up with a piece of music quite as extraordinary, quite as gasp-inducing, quite as “blimey, the world has never heard anything like this before” as, say, Strawberry Fields Forever or A Day In The Life? No, they can't. Or I guess they could, but only in the same sense they might convince themselves they can walk on water or steer Chelsea to the title this year. To be fair, the timing of the Beatles' rise to fame, in an era of rapid cultural change, gave them a unique advantage. Pop music-wise, there were countless things that simply hadn't been tried before – even the idea of a band playing its own material was pretty novel – so a bunch of blokes with genuinely fresh ideas about how to make a pop song, and the talent to see these through, was bound to stand out. Obviously their most inventive stuff took a while to emerge, but by then the Beatles' knack for churning out great raw pop songs had maneuvered them into a position where record-buyers were more than happy to listen. And the band didn't let them down. My point is, the Beatles didn't just write great songs. They changed the face of pop music in a way that nobody, however gifted, will ever be able to do again. Even for the likes of Adele, that must be a sobering thought. Mike Ward is the TV Critic of the Daily Star and the TV Editor of the Daily Express Saturday magazine. Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, Gemma Rosefield (cello) Barry Wordsworth (conductor) Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 8 November 2015 ★★★★★ Once again the maestro brought his empathy with dance to the concert hall. Although Elgar’s rarely heard ballet score ‘The Sanguine Fan’ is based on a rather bitter story, it was quite delightful, almost light music. When Gemma Rosefield played Tchaikovsky’s ‘Variations on a Rococo Theme’ she evoked his genius in ballet. She brought the music to life in a playful, spontaneous way on a cello once owned by the Prince Regent. The spirited performance of Schubert’s Great C Major Symphony came with plenty of drama but also a lightness of touch, the second movement in particular seemed to dance. Andrew Connal
The Staves De La Warr Pavilion, 6 November 2015, ★★★★★ With their special blend of folk fun and frolics, The Staves have grown so much over the past few years. They’ve honed their unique sisterly harmonies which leave you levitating around the room. The tunes are as lush as flowers on a summer’s day. The band were impeccable and everybody had clearly rehearsed to a tee. The beautiful brass section and the lone violinist made enough of an impact as a whole orchestra would have done. They played tunes spanning their whole repertoire which wouldn’t have sounded out of place at Woodstock 1969. Andy Forward
BREMF – ‘The Marvel of our Century’ – Harmonia Artificiosa St Paul’s Church, 7 November 2015, ★★★★★ Elicia Silverstein (violin) and John McKean (harpsichord) were sensational last year in the Latest Music Bar as part of Early Music Live!, BREMF’s invaluable showcase for young aspiring musicians. Now, with Alon Portal (viola da gamba), they celebrated the 350th anniversary of the ‘marvel’ Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, a woman leading the way in what was very much the man’s world of Louis XVI. Two of her sonatas were played alongside works by her contemporaries, François Couperin and Jean-Féry Rebel. This stately programme, while quite different from last year’s musical fireworks, was just as virtuosic and very well received. Andrew Connal
Harry Enfield & Paul Whitehouse – Legends! Brighton Centre, 8 November 2015, ★★★★★ This was always going to be a stroll down memory lane for anyone the wrong side of 40 and from the introductory whines of the Old Gits it was the comedy equivalent of a reformed ’80s band running through their greatest hits. While it was great to welcome back Loadsamoney, Stavros, and Smashie and Nicey post-Yewtree, some of the scripts lacked punch and they often struggled to come back from the frequent corpsing. The fast moving, foul-mouthed show included fine slandering of the Top Gear presenters, the royals and current comedians but it was Whitehouse’s talents that shone through overall. Steve Clements
