being over six foot tall too does add the ‘rugby’ element, but there’s really not a lot I can do about that. To appropriate another cartoon’s more loaded excuse: I’m not bad, I’m just drawn that way. I haven’t acquired a new Hobbseing pal for quite some time. What with Brighton being a fabulous place to be out and about in, this does lead to there being less soft landings to scout out to receive the accost. I’ve also learned to be a bit more gentle with my circle. They’re lovely, but we’re all a little older and more likely to pick up injury. As I told a much younger pal when he enthusiastically tried to combine me with some makeshift parkour on my birthday recently – don’t break your friends! But I do miss the rough and tumble roustabout. That glint in my eye was declaring that I had all the ethics of a pirate in a swordfight as I launched myself upon my prey. Maybe there’s a case for Hobbesing to come back. Just with a bit more health and safety in the mix. Watch out...

here is something to be said for unabashed and unadulterated affection, barrelling towards you in a blur with the full knowledge that there’s nothing you can do about it. It also helps if the ball of affection in question has already scouted out that there’s something soft for the both of you to land on, and made a quick check that you’re not holding anything likely to shatter or burn upon landing. I would say that. I am the barreler. Hear me roar. Actually, it’s more like – look out for a glint in my eye and second guess what it might mean before I hit. This was something I did a lot of for a period of time. A cross between a hug and a rugby tackle, I was inspired by the cartoon strip ‘Calvin and Hobbes’ by Bill Patterson. I’d call it ‘Hobbseing’, and save it for my closest (and most physically robust) friends as an act of both playful warfare and a show of love. Like one of those toddlers that winds you when they give you a running hug. Myself

thelatest.tv Whitehawk made their own piece of history this season as they reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in their history. I am writing this two days after the Hawks spectacular 5-3 win over Lincoln City in the First Round and they have been drawn away to either Dagenham & Redbridge or Morecambe in the Second Round. In cricket it wasn't such a successful year for Sussex County s part of the sports team at Latest TV I get to explore and report on the thriving sports scene in Brighton and the surrounding areas. From football to cricket, hockey to basketball and everything in between, if it's a sport and it takes place in Brighton you can be sure we'll want to cover it. Along with my partner in crime, Tatiana Sanchez, we ensure that no rock is left unturned when it comes to sport in Brighton. In our daily sports news show we bring you all the latest breaking news from Brighton & Hove Albion, all our non-league football sides, Sussex Cricket Club, Worthing Thunder, the local rugby scene and many more obscure and entertaining sports that grace our fine city. This looks set to be a stellar year from Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club as the Seagulls are riding high in the Championship. With Chris Hughton at the helm, promotion looks to be a realistic goal for an Albion side who, with the financial backing of Chairman Tony Bloom, have purchased wisely in the summer and look all set to make the leap to the Premier League. This past month saw the Albion make history as they went – at the time of writing – 17 league games unbeaten. Surpassing a record which had stood since the 1930/31 season. Women's football is also embracing a huge rise in popularity this season, with sides across the country hosting record

Cricket Club. The side were relegated from Division One of the County Championship and went through the entire Royal London One Day Cup Campaign without a victory. However T20 Captain Luke Wright guided the Sharks to the Quarter-Finals of the T20 Blast where they were eventually knocked out by Northamptonshire. Since the end of the season there have been significant changes at the club; Head Coach Mark Robinson is still at the helm and is keen to guide Sussex to promotion next season. However Ed Joyce has stepped down from his role as County Championship and One-Day Captain, a role Luke Wright has taken up. It's sure to be an exciting season for Sussex when their new campaign kicks off in May, and we'll be there to follow all the action.

crowds. Under James Marrs the seagulls are themselves hunting down promotion to the Women's Super League and with a strong squad the sky's the limit for the albion. The side are facing a huge month in their season which will culminate on December 6th when, for the first time, the Women's team takes to the Amex pitch for a league match.

Now if you miss an Albion match never fear because here on the sports team we have the cure: it's Albion Night, your three hour weekly fix of Seagulls action. With full matches from the men's team, extended highlights from the women's side, as well as a host of other Albion content. Thursdays from 7:30 is where you'll find all the must see Seagulls action. Now up until this season many people were unaware of the city's superb second football club. However, this season Whitehawk have been making a name for themselves and bringing their Ultras along for the ride. The Hawks are soaring the National League South, two divisions below the Football League, with their own dreams of promotion. channel 159 or at thelatest.tv

GOING SOLO have always loved the phrase “black is the new black”, the world of fashion has a fabulous way of disappearing up its own fundement. Catchphrases are a constant source of delight – and horror. So many are purposefully created and lack any sense of the real joy that comes from a phrase that simply slips into common usage. Right now my favourite is “Staying in is the new going out”, it could have been written for me! Oh I know that I give the impression of being an all out gadabout and I do enjoy a night out with friends. I have my regular jaunts, a couple of pub quizzes, the theatre of course and restaurants. Oh and all the Food Festival activities I engage in. If that sounds a lot – the reality is that I spend a great deal of time at home, more often than not alone. I am embracing my new found solitude with an open mind. I like the freedom that it brings and after the initial period of being, let me be honest here, lonely, I find that I enjoy my own company. I lived alone for many years in London and loved it, but back then my life was a whirlwind of going out, often not going home at all. I was young, footloose and fancy free although I was never sure what fancy free meant – I’m not sure I do even now. Living alone gave me so many options. I ate what and when I wanted, went where I wanted to go and when I wanted to go, and if I wanted company I had a nice group of friends who I would ask around. I have always loved entertaining and especially cooking for my friends and family. I think that need to entertain, or should I say feed, is a genetic trait. My mum has it and my maternal grandmother had it too. (My paternal grandmother was not a natural hostess, although I did for some strange reason always enjoy her overcooked roast beef sandwiches on thickly buttered Hovis. I doubt I would like them now but back then I thought they were delicious.) She also had shop bought cakes, which for the rest of

I

my family seemed like a real extravagance. Mum was always up to her neck in cake batter or pastry and despite us never having much money, there was always cake or pie in the tin. I have this gene, the putter-offood-on-the-table gene, and I love it. Living alone has ups and downs when it comes to food. Some of the things that I love to make are clearly created on a scale to feed the 5,000. This may sound great

channel 8,

but after a few days of eating the same casserole you can tire. The arrival of a new deep freeze as a Christmas gift last year has helped, but I do not have the discipline to label, or a good memory, so dinner can be a lucky dip. It might sound like fun but it can be disappointing to get home to a container of soup when you really were hoping for a rich chilli. So my staying in being the new going out is not always a solo pleasure, I have re-discovered my love of having friends around for a meal. That means cooking in the way that I like best and hopefully having the right amount of leftovers to enjoy rather than become bored with. This past weekend I cooked for three friends, an impromptu Sunday lunch, inspired by seeing a rather tasty looking shoulder of lamb and a rolled breast to match. It was Saturday afternoon and I had not planned on inviting guests channel 159 or at thelatest.tv

round, but a quick call to a few dear friends and all was in place. I bought both pieces of lamb, made a few extra purchases, one guest was vegetarian, and found some fresh mint to make sauce – I cannot abide the bottled stuff and hate even more mint jelly. Sunday morning alone in my kitchen with The Archers and a pot of good coffee is my idea of heaven. I like peeling vegetables, I love basting meat and I thrill at the idea of constructing some kind of pudding. Please note that in my book Sunday lunch does not require a starter, nor does roast lamb require a Yorkshire pudding. By 10am everything was prepared and ready to cook, which gave me time to vacuum, lay the table – properly with a linen cloth and napkins, and finally run my now sweating carcass through a hot shower. By 11am I was done, everything in place and the oven warming in readiness. There was a mango and ginger tart cooling on the rack, a mint sauce steeping and potatoes ready to sizzle in smoking hot goose fat. At noon I rewarded myself with a G&T. I might give the impression that I am the sort of person that gets home and settles down with a stiff drink every night but nothing could be further from the truth. I very seldom have a drink at home because I don’t much like drinking alone. It’s not a rule but it has become a preference – and given that I spend a lot of time tasting both food and drink it is probably a very good idea. But a G&T as a reward for a morning in the kitchen, well I’m not into self denial, and wow, it was good, a double measure of Blackdown and a sploosh of Fever Tree and I was a very happy man. My friends arrived and we spent four hours laughing and eating and sharing the afternoon, and at 5.30 they left and I washed up. That evening I was alone once more, staying in and not going out – and I loved it. At seven I made a cold lamb sandwich. I watched a bit of TV and went to bed a very happy man.

his episode should be called 'Everyone Hates Emma' – because they do, and she deserves it. At the amateur boxing club Jamie pretends to act shocked when Spenny announces that he and Lauren are no more. As if on cue, Emma struts in with her confused accent and waifish attitude. She's wearing an outfit that makes her look like Taylor Schilling in Orange is the New Black. Then it all gets flirty flirty. To make matters worse, Emma doesn't even drink coffee. Binky has to bring her a green tea post-workout. You are NOT Gwyneth Paltrow, alright Emma!? Jess wants to give Jamie a balloon as a gesture of friendship. A gesture of patronising, slap-in-the-face friendship. Mark Francis is on the phone speaking in a foreign tongue when he joins Richard, Rosie and Binky for brunch. It sounds like he's flirting a bit. Has he taken a lover on one of his private islands? They start talking about Emma. He's all "who's Emma". Indeed, Mark Francis! Turns out Jess went to see a rugby game that Jamie was performing in (as the mascot) and snogged some random man in the audience whilst she was meant to be watching Jamie run about (dressed as a giant cockerel). This leads to Jamie taking her friendship balloon and practically deflating it in her face by telling her that he has now erased her from his life. (They'll be friends again by Christmas.) Just as he is about to float the suggestion that they firm up their sexless relationship, Emma tells Ollie that she kissed Spenny. Ollie is all "but we were doing lots of kissing on the lips and holding hands". Sorry, but are we literally watching 10- year-olds here? Ollie tells Richard and Binky who sort of laughs in his poor little face. Tiff tells Lucy about her new career move as Rosie's pointless intern. Lucy is NOT happy. She is all "Rosie Fortescue? Ew?" Did I miss something here? When did Lucy start hating Rosie so vehemently? Emma admits to wearing makestruts in upOllie and having Botox, but leaves with her out the fact that he appears to confused have Nivea pearl chapstick on as well. He then tells Spenny and accent and Emma that they're horrid. waifish Richard tells Toff that his attitude robots are his friends and that he'd quite like to introduce her to them. Across the room, Mark Francis says that his hair reminds him of Camilla Parker-Bowels. Sorry, the Duchess of Cornwall. Andrew Bullock is a producer, presenter and writer. usion can so often lead to confusion. Over the years as food trends come and go, few were as misguided as ‘Fusion’. I tried to embrace it but more often than not it was simply a muddle of ill-informed ideas on a plate. When I heard about Señor Buddha I was apprehensive, would this be more of the same, would I go home with a palate dancing to two tunes – in different keys and to different time signatures? The answer is no. I need not have been afraid. Señor Buddha takes a selection of great ingredients and presents them with style, a robust style that given the informal nature of this tiny restaurant and incredibly tiny open kitchen is admirable. I went on a wet and windy Thursday with my brother and The black sister-in-law. They live in a tiny pudding village a few miles outside and was perfect, equally tiny town on the Welsh borders, so the range of cuisine on soft and offer to them is to say the least creamy in restricted. I thought that this would at least be fun but it turned out to texture but packed with be much more. The menu is ordered tapas style, ooomph when the food has some elements of it came to Spain, some elements of the far east, but nothing silly. We sat at the flavour bar so that we could watch our food being prepared – which I love. There is an element of theatre to that format which I enjoy as much when it is going well as when there is a culinary disaster. There were no disasters, despite the owner being a man down and his commis being new that day. Fortunately the young lady out front was more than capable of keeping things on an even keel, even with a huge table celebrating a birthday. So off we set on our foodie journey, starting with sherry pig cheek croquettes. Slowly braised, like any good Bath chap should be, then breaded and fried. There were Thai spices, but they were discreet and did not mask the sweet pork. Next came confit duck leg with sherry hoisin poached plums. I

F

really enjoyed this, the succulent confit so much better than crispy duck from the east, but with the addition of that eastern flavour – it simply worked. I love octopus but given my guests’ fear of it I was willing to forego the pleasure, but they insisted and committed to trying it. I loved it, they were less enamoured – result! More for me. It was as tender a tentacle as I have ever eaten and the squid ink caviar was fun and tasty. They were equally wary of scallops and morcilla but sadly for me both loved the combination. I have to say the black pudding was perfect, soft and creamy in texture but packed with ooomph when it came to flavour. And the twist on this classic combo was a coconut and cauliflower puree that worked very well. Given that we had eaten two fish dishes, neither to my brother’s normal taste, we ordered the lamb cutlets and allowed him to gnaw away to his heart’s delight – which he did. Meanwhile his wife and I enjoyed a bowl of really good mussels in a saffron and coconut broth that required an extra portion of good bread for mopping purposes. Full marks too for big fat juicy mussels. We also made light of the lemongrass halloumi which came with asian puy lentils. Finally the chef insisted that we try his signature mountain mutton stew, a slow braise rich with spices in a heady sauce that put smiles on all of our faces. So did I like it? The answer is yes. Hats off to owner and cook Lee who held things together so well and cooked up a storm. 9 Preston Road, Brighton, BN1 4QE 01273 567 832

Between them, they captivated their audience with a spellbinding melee of experimental pop and avant garde folk. Press plaudits for the show include Time Out calling it 'warm, witty and something a bit like magic' and the Edinburgh Spotlight 'beautiful, compelling and intriguing... two of the finest creative and outstanding musicians around.' "Working with Kate is always a delightful experience, and it was lovely to play on our home turf", commented Nick.

HOLLY WOULD BUSHY BROWS ver since Cara Delevingne came into the public eye we were graced with the bushy eyebrow trend. Big, thick, beautiful eyebrows. Whilst many people could quite easily replicate this look, I struggled. You see, I’m lacking in the brow department. I am naturally very fair and for some reason this means that my eyebrows are invisible to the naked eye. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit… But they do take quite a bit of pencilling in to resemble an eyebrow. Last summer I went on holiday with my friends to Cyprus, I knew that this meant I would be swimming (makeup free) in the sea. If I tried to pencil my eyebrows in, I thought, before I go swimming I’d only end up with them dripping down my face by the end of the day. Blonde/ invisible eyebrows is one thing but having dark smudges smeared across my cheeks would probably look worse. It wasn’t the end of the world and it didn’t really bother me as much as I’m making out, so I was ready to admit defeat. Until I was introduced to the world of HD brows. What are HD brows, you ask? They’re basically the fairy godmother of eyebrows. Normally, I don’t like paying for anything if I can get the same result at home. But I definitely would not be able to replicate HD brows with my pair of

tweezers. They start off by tinting the hairs of your eyebrow… Genius. Although, when I first saw the colour of the dye that the beautician had made, images of Groucho Marx sprang to mind. She reassured me that the colour would be a lot lighter and she was, of course, correct. The colour looked very natural but still dark enough to not need any additional help from a pencil. She then proceeded to wax them

into shape for me. At last, I had perfect eyebrows that stayed perfect all summer long! I would definitely get these done again but only for a special occasion or a holiday, as it is quite expensive. You can get a regular eyebrow tint for a fraction of the price though and I fully recommend getting that done. It makes the smaller hairs darker which gives you a bigger eyebrow to shape and overall a more polished look.

SPELLBINDING! A FEAST OF FESTIVE TREATS AT BRIGHTON DOME igh-flying daredevilry, bewitching dance and an improvised panto are set to make Christmas at Brighton Dome a spellbinding affair. Flown (Sat 19 – Sun 27 December), the award-winning, critically-acclaimed magical and mesmerising performance from contemporary circus company Pirates of the Carabina promises to be a beautifully bonkers Christmas show. A flying aerialist tries to iron her partydress, a stagehand gets tangled in the decorations and stuntmen argue (in the air) with the pesky festive lights. Sounds just like any ‘normal’ family Christmas, then… Pirates of the Carabina themselves are a motley crew of incredible acrobats, aerialists, musicians and stuntmen. Flown tells the tale of their attempts to get the show up and running in time for Christmas. Things go right… but plenty more goes wrong, as disagreements, fear and exhaustion threaten to ruin the festivities, with catastrophe just one move away. Following a stunning performance as part of Brighton Festival 2014 and fresh from a sell-out tour across Australia, expect a jaw-dropping mix of comedy and chaos with bold physicality and live music as the cast invites audiences to come inside, to look backstage and delight in the absurdity of contemporary circus life. Accompanied by roaring live music, it’s big, beautiful and barmy and of course in the end, everything is Flown… even the band! Turning whatever you think you know about the circus on its head – quite literally! – this show will captivate the whole family and leave audiences on the edge of their seats. The festive family-friendly fun doesn’t stop there. Storyteller Andrew Barnett Jones has made up stories for loads of top TV shows from Mr Bean: the Animated Series to Shaun the Sheep, but this Christmas he’ll turn his attentions to the humble

present a fun and unique adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (Tues 15 – Sun 20 December), interweaving the traditional story with modern interpretation as a cast of three bring a revolving stage set to life with puppets and music. Crammed full of dramatic scenes and characters, from Marley’s ghost to the saintly Tiny Tim and Ebenezer Scrooge himself, A Christmas Carol depicts a truly British Christmas filled with joy, eating too much, family reunions and goodwill. Another Christmas classic heading to Brighton Dome’s stage is Ballet Theatre UK’s beautiful re-telling of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairytale ballet The Snow Queen (Sat 2 & Sun 3 January) – the iconic tale that inspired the smash hit movie Frozen. This spectacular production follows the story of a young girl and her quest in search of The Snow Queen who has placed her kingdom under an evil spell. A magical adventure takes her on a journey across the frozen north where she encounters an enchanted reindeer, glittering Ice Princesses and charming Snowmen in search of true love. Ballet Theatre UK's renowned company of international dancers, beautiful costumes and glittering stage sets combine to create a magnificent spectacle, all set to a glorious and magical score. For music lovers, Kate Rusby (Fri 11 Dec) – one of the most popular young folk singers of traditional English folk songs – heads to the venue for a spellbinding evening of songs from her highly acclaimed two Christmas albums. Her exquisite interpretations of traditional songs and finely wrought selfpenned tunes have won her an audience that reaches beyond the genre, so expect a truly memorable evening of awardwinning music and bawdy Yorkshire wit. SCIENCE UNLOCKING POTENTIAL

BRIGHTON’S ARTY ALISON KROG

HANDS DOWN FAVOURITE

Dr Caroline Oprandi keeping you up to date with science & technology at PACA e have come to the end of our Greenpower Race Car topic and we are just waiting for University of Brighton to 3D scan and print our winning models ready for testing the aerodynamics of the models within their Engineering Wind Tunnel. We are very lucky to have Leonardo from Ricardo Engineering helping us in our Afterschool club to finalise the car. It really has been a great start for our STEM curriculum. It is evident from the pupils’ reactions that we are managing to engage those that would not necessarily have thought of science and technology as a subject for them. So far we haven’t needed to rely on any tests or assessments in order to monitor their level of progress since it is extremely evident from the level of engagement, and their presentations, that they have an excellent attitude to independent learning. The pupils do also have traditional science and maths lessons and STEM compliments these lessons. Our next topic is Astronomy and we are We refer to making the most of Ken having our astronaut Ken Bowersox’s Bowersox visit the school by referring to his space space missions missions in the lesson. in lessons However, the main ‘mission’ for the KS3 pupils is to develop a movie that includes at least six key events in astronomy. The movies will then be entered into a competition called Into Film: Into Space. Into Film states on their website that “Into Film: Into Space includes many great, free activities for young people to take part in around the themes of space and exploration, with the most exciting being a first-ofits-kind filmmaking competition that offers the chance for six lucky entrants to have their winning entries screened in orbit around the Earth! As part of perhaps our most exciting competition yet, we're asking you to create a short film on the themes of 'exploration' and 'space'. Films that are entered must be: Themed around space or exploration. Outer space? Your own space? A space that you love? Made by young people between the ages of 5 and 19, either solo or as part of a group, in or out of school. The six chosen winners will have their films blasted into space! British European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Tim Peake is embarking on a mission to the International Space Station (ISS) and he'll be taking the six winning films with him, to be screened for all the astronauts on the station.” The KS3 pupils are already being extremely creative and coming up with some great ideas (not all feasible I have to say at this point!), however whether they win or not, I can’t wait to see the final results. his week, I’ve got the perfect antidote to the November gloom. Head up to the Round Georges pub in Sutherland Road, Kemptown, and imbibe the amazing abstracts by local favourite Geoff Hands (along with a Rioja or two, of course). Geoff’s exceptionally expressive seascape and G Hands Red Force 5 landscape-inspired paintings blur the line between the figurative and the abstract. And though his most recent work might appear highly gestural at first glance, hidden depths imply the influences of his visual memories of various locations in Cornwall and Sussex. Says Geoff: “My painting practice mediates between a G Hands Sea semi-figurative, painterly language and Expressive the impact of more abstract, non-figurative, landscapeimagery. In addition to inspired paintings allowing recollected, contingent, experiences blur the line from sea and landscape between the environments to figurative and the contribute to the conception and making abstract of the work shown here, I am also motivated by the actual process of painting in itself and in exploring improvisation with colour.” If you’d like to meet Geoff in person, make a date for Saturday 5 December, from 7 to 9pm, when the Round Georges gallery will be open all evening while jazz trio, ‘The Heroes of Rhythm’, play live in the main bar from 8pm. Don’t miss: We’ve much admired the work of Seiko Kato, an illustration graduate of Brighton University. So excited to hear that not only is she designing a unique, site-specific installation for Corridor Gallery, but she will also be creating intricately hand-cut collage work live in the space on selected dates! Corridor Gallery will also house new additions and exclusive pieces of her hugely popular range of merchandise. From TheFuneral 28 November. Also, looking forward to ink_d gallery’s Christmas Group Show. A special highlight this year is an exclusive print release from Jake WoodEvans and other artist-led events. COMMUTABLE WILL HARRIS

GET ON BOARD BRIGHTON & HOVE BUSES

How to keep fit while sitting still all day

Financial help to buy annual bus tickets

here are many perils that can befall a commuter. Delays. Cancellations. Nodding off through sleep deprivation and waking up in Bedford (or worse, Luton, where commuters end up on bricks, someone having run off with their loafers). But by far the most serious risk, from my perspective at least, is the constant and unavoidable threat of getting fat. With our frenetic 21st century lives, maintaining a body beautiful is a difficult enough challenge at the best of times. Throw in a daily, four hour round trip between your home and place of employment, and it becomes almost impossible. All those hours A fairytale trail spent ensconced of cakes and in the comfort of a train seat may biscuits pervade office life be a boon for working, or reading, or just watching the world go by, but none of these things burn calories (or if they do, not in sufficient quantities to offset a Victoria Station sausage roll at 8pm while Southern irons out whatever cataclysm has brought the network to a standstill that day). On top of that, when you commute a serious distance to a desk job, it takes Herculean effort to shoehorn a gym membership into your routine. With only a sliver of a work-out window before your morning departure and after you return that night (when frankly, you have become a humanshaped avatar of exhaustion anyway), the idea of sinking a portion of your wage into a gym membership – on top of the hundreds of pounds you fling at the rail operators each month – feels like a gamble you might not win. Perhaps that’s why longer travel times have been linked to a range of health issues, including obesity, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Yes. As if delayed trains and shivering on cold platforms weren’t bad enough, our commutes may actually be killing us. Defeatism, I hear you cry. Laziness. The idea that commuters must somehow make an irrevocable choice between working and working out is nothing but a convenient excuse, a shield for the weak-willed and doughy desk jockeys of the world to cower behind. And perhaps you’re right. I am already trialling two strategies to try and keep the scales from tipping into the danger zone. The first has been (well, durrr) to try reduce my calorie intake, something I – being a veteran foodie – find hard. It’s one thing not to engage with the fairytale trail of cakes, biscuits and other treats that pervade office life (all of which lead to a gingerbread cottage, with type 2 diabetes inside), but quite another to stave off the desire to reward yourself after getting home at the end of another epic commute. The second, more successful strategy involves taking an actual lunch break, as opposed to continuing to sit at my desk and answer emails, with the slight variation that I’m simultaneously shovelling carbohydrates into my face. OK, so I rarely break a sweat and my ‘lunchtime circuits’ might only take me around the homewares floor at John Lewis (“No more cushions!” yells my other half when he hears the rustle of carrier bags approaching down the hallway), but it’s still activity, isn’t it?

Even men can jazz things up with blazers in plush fabrics, vibrant colours and prints. Maroons and plums, jacquard printing, bold silk lining and leather-look lapels all work well. WAVE RICHARD FULTON

WAVE SAMANTHA HARMAN

H2O

Bags of Bagsy style

ello my name is Richard Fulton. I am a 54 year old Artisan, just an ordinary person who was ambling through life not really taking much notice of what makes us tick when 4 ½ years ago a family member became ill and I was thrown into the world of Doctors and Hospitals. I personally made a decision that the only way I could help, was to try and know something about the workings of our body, what makes the body run at its healthy body state and what helps it to fight illness and health problems. My research to try and understand some of this has also turned into a hobby. So my first topic is about water – good old H2O. Research has lead me to derive that water covers 71% of the earth, of which the oceans hold approximately 96.5% of all the earth’s water. Up to 60% of the adult human body is water, the brain and heart are composed of 73% water and the lungs are about 83%.

was somewhat overjoyed to discover makeup from Bagsy in this month's Wave goody-bag. The new British brand launched this summer and have created 23 'handbag essential' products, which are a bit like me – small but perfectly formed. (Not that I am in any way adept at squeezing myself into handbags). The festive party season is looming with its usual sparkly predictability, meaning that it's almost time for me to dig out the vast array of minute clutch bags that have been gathering dust in the bottom of my wardrobe, and try out some new killer make-up looks. Suffice to say this goody-bag was perfectly timed. The three elegantly packaged items came with equally elegant names: Wonder Wand, Beautiful Eyes and Lip Time Velvet. I prepared to pretty myself up, to try armed only with good lighting and the out some bathroom mirror. Wonder Wand truly lives up to its name, new killer one pencil, two benefits. The split lead make-up design allows for a concealer and highlooks lighter combination. This product went a long way in helping to banish my imperfections, while the highlighter was easy to apply where directly required, as opposed to some powder highlighters. Beautiful Eyes comes with its own chubby pencil sharpener and claims to last for up to 24-hours. The product is lightweight meaning that my eyelids didn't feel 'weighed down' or 'sticky' as with some other eye crayons. The product bestowed a smoky (and hopefully sultry) look and worked well when used in conjunction with my own eye make up. While it lasted for an inordinate amount of time, I did need to reapply after work (8.5 hours), as the intensity of colour had faded slightly. Lip Velvet is aptly named. It was velvety in texture when applied onto my lips and extremely lightweight. I was most impressed that the product didn't have the dryness or cracking effect like other matte liquids that I have tried on other occasions. All three products also passed the clutch bag test with flying colours, fitting perfectly and neatly into one of my miniatures. This is one of Bagsy's unique selling points, although to be fair to other brands, all makeup is designed specifically to fit into ladies handbags. To date I have never encountered a 12-inch eyeliner or an galumphing great mascara that I couldn't take out with me. However, that aside, the gorgeous packaging and ease of use has won me over, my Bagsy products will be my new inseparable friends throughout the forthcoming party season. I would also be pleased-as-punch if Father Christmas were to bestow even more of them upon me this year. Husbands/boyfriends/girlfriends take note... www.balanceme.co.uk

What does water do for us?

Saliva for digestion It allows the body cells to grow, reproduce and survive Flushes waste from the body Lubricates joints Helps to deliver oxygen all over the body Regulates body temperature Converts food to components needed for survival

How much water should we drink?

The average healthy adult living in a temperate climate needs: Man: 3 litres Woman: 2.2 litres If you are exercising, ill or pregnant you may need more. As your body grows accustomed to a state of chronic dehydration you loose sensitivity to water deprivation and therefore do not feel thirsty. The best rule of thumb is if your pee is dark you need a good drink of water. We can also mistake hunger for thirst so instead of a chocolate bar have a glass of water. When we are dehydrated we get headaches, start to feel tired, the body feels cold, our blood pressure rises and our joints ache. We also can suffer a concentration dip, memory loss and mood swings so instead of thinking I need to get some pills, maybe just a few more glasses of water a day. It is also great for the skin and eyes. There are all types of water: tap, bottled, and filter, I use bottled water and I try and pick the one with the highest pH content, which is displayed on the bottle. I hope you have enjoyed this read. All the information I have mentioned, I have read about on the internet but, if you have any worries about your health you should always see your Doctor. channel 8,

Despite the fact that we all know we need water, there are those of us who consider coffee, soda, and beer for example as substitutes. On the contrary these types of drinks are notoriously loaded with sugar and caffeine and therefore have a counteractive health impact compared with drinking water. Purified water is in my option really the only beverage option for optimal health.

ENTERTAINMENT JOE FULLER Final week of Brighton’s film festival inecity has got off to a great start; I've seen The Empire Of Scents so far which was funny, warm and informative. I learned about the important olfactory qualities of whale excrement for example – in the tantalisingly named mysterious substance that is ambergris – and my review is on page 24. I couldn't decide between four or five stars for the audience award so tore both, and am now worried that I spoiled my ballot. Please take care to tear carefully after enjoying your film. Güeros was also highly recommended by a sagacious companion, so there is a good standard of films on offer in our very own film festival. We now head into the final week and the film I'm most excited about is Our Little Sister (Duke of York's, Tues 24 Nov, 6.30pm). I saw director Hirokazu Koreeda's Like Father, Like Son at the Discover Tuesdays Picturehouse series a few years ago and loved it. I was reminded of the sublime Tokyo Story with its focus on family and contemplative tone. Our Little Sister is a tender tale about three sisters taking in their younger sibling when their father dies, and if it's anything like Koreeda's previous output it will be thought-provoking and moving. There are also some classic films being screened in the exotic surroundings of the Royal Pavilion's Music Room from Thursday 26 to Sunday 29 November, which include a glass of wine on arrival in the Banqueting Room. You could see My Beautiful Laundrette, which delves into sexuality, race and class in '80s Britain and features Daniel Day-Lewis in his first major role. (Sat 28 Nov, 6pm) Laurie Anderson never seems to go out of style, her 2010 album Homeland was fantastic and she performed in a specially curated event revolving around animal stories at Brighton Festival this year. On a similar theme, Heart Of A Dog sees Anderson present an essayistic collage of compositions, narration, animation and home A collage of movies reflecting on animation and the affection she had for her pet Rat Terrier. home movies With 97% on Rotten reflecting on Tomatoes, Heart Of A affection for a pet Dog “delves into weighty themes with lyrical, haunting grace.” (Duke of York's, Fri 27 Nov, 6.30pm) The closing night special feature is Dheepan, winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes that sees a veteran Tamil Tiger attempt to become a civilian after a life of violence. Sri Lankan strangers Yalini and Dheepan feign being a family to seek asylum in France but ultimately end up involved in gangland warfare. It's been described as an immensely powerful work by The Guardian so should make for a fiery final night. STAGE ANDREW KAY KING CHARLES III

script too, as the reallife Prince Harry – back from the war and supporting Help for Heroes – has suddenly become less the quintessential adolescent and more like Henry V!

Director Rupert Gould talks about his new production ing Charles III is a highly entertaining royal drama – as well as a politically charged and seriously thoughtprovoking one – as it imagines Prince Charles ascending the throne. Did you and Mike Bartlett, as director and playwright, have to tread a fine line regarding the comedy? Much of the humour in the play, as in a lot of sitcoms, is predicated on the comedy of opposites, as when the King’s press secretary meets with a punky Occupy-style student – the clash of values there! But it’s affectionate humour. It’s about recognising human foibles more than it is satirical. Some people may come to the production expecting to see something like Spitting Image or The Thick of It, but actually one of the great attributes of the writing is that pretty much all the characters – whether they’re from the extreme left or right – are treated with an enormous amount of understanding regarding their motives. At the very first preview, I remember, there was this massive ‘whoof’ of laughter greeting the actors playing Camilla and Prince Harry, and I thought, “How are we possibly going to follow through on this to the play’s more serious exploration of the monarchy?” But, in fact, the actors really enjoy that challenge, riding the rumbustiousness and then engaging the audience in more intensely.

K

Have any royals been to see the production? Not to our knowledge! People may have been dispatched to evaluate it. We had one person who’s quite close to the royal household brief us on etiquette and protocols, so that we got those accurate. That person said he thought that most of royal family – though they might find it difficult to watch – would actually be very appreciative of much of the play. What does Robert Powell brings to the title role? Robert is, of course, famous for having played Christ [in Zefferelli’s Jesus of Nazareth], and he has a lot of stage experience. He’s almost like a violinist with a theatre audience, drawing them in. So I think audiences will have huge compassion for his Charles and what he goes through in the play – to become king and then feel so down after the promotion. What about how Harry and Kate Middleton are depicted, in terms of Mike evoking Shakespeare’s history plays? Mike has always written great parts for women. You might say Kate in the play is a bit like Lady Macbeth, but she can also be seen as reformer, embracing a new and very practical form of monarchy. Harry is a complicated composite of Hamlet and Prince Hal [from Shakespeare’s Henry IV]. We’ve made some additional tweaks to the

And Mike is, like Shakespeare, writing in blank verse as well. The really ingenious thing about the verse is it makes you take the characters seriously. It gives an intellectual and emotional kind of muscle to their political arguments. Mike has always had a very strong sense of structural rhythm. He'd talk about his texts being written in eight- or ten-line bursts of rhythm. And even at the initial read-through, the very first draft of King Charles III was brilliant! Why do you think royal dramas have become so numerous of late, on stage and screen as in The King’s Speech, The Queen, The Audience… ? One reason might be that the Queen remains a very potent embodiment of Englishness and she has been so consistent. Most of us can’t remember a period when she wasn’t on all the bank notes. In the late Elizabethan era, Shakespeare was writing plays full of anxiety about what happens when the monarch goes. And we, in a similar way, are looking at that now: that moment (as with Mandela) of, “My god, they’ve gone!”. That’s a very vulnerable-making moment. One big issue in the play is the generations: the younger royals being more media-savvy and populist; the tension between that old-school traditionalism. But what’s even more remarkable is how this production’s big questions about nationalism – the nature of our nation state, British identity and how we’re governed – have come to the fore and are evolving with on-going history, the Scottish referendum, the general election, Corbyn... So you and Mike might be tweaking the character of Mr Evans, the play's fictional Labour leader? You never know what'll happen in politics! 30 November – 5 December Chichester Festival Theatre Oaklands Park, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 6AP Box Office: 01243 781312, www.cft.org.uk

Mutations – Two-day alt-music festival in the heart of Brighton ollowing last years's one-off Drill:Brighton event of December last year, co-curated with the band Wire, local promoters One Inch Badge have decided to try their hand at a similar event. A little more compact and spread over two days, Mutations is similar to Drill in its alternative indie folk, electronic and punk spirit, but perhaps with a more underground feel. There are no 'big' acts, instead Mutations offers up a plethora of cult names from around the globe. Highlights include: the super loud and aggressive noise duo Lightning Bolt, that feature just bass and drums; Canadian three piece noise rockers Metz, who have released two albums on the legendary Sub Pop label; the alternative discohouse producer John Talabot;

F

Josh T Pearson, who has only released one album so far, but has developed almost deified status ever since he was part of the shortlived Lift to Experience band at the turn of the millennium; American stoner/doom psych-arabic-metal merchants Om (which refers to the natural vibration of the universe, fact fans); American artist Chelsea Wolfe, whose music has ben

described as drone-metal-artfolk; experimental pop rockers Tourist; Christopher Owens, former frontman of Girls; regular vocalist with The New Pornographers and solo artist in her own right, Neko Case; British electronic duo Blanck Mass, Canadian alt-indie band Ought, and Manchester based psyche-folk artist Jane Weaver. The two days have been structured so that the venues on the Saturday are predominately in Hove and on Sunday, in Brighton. Each day starts at 1pm, with minimal clashes, particularly between the bigger acts. In addition there will be a pop up indie record store, a poster fair and a secret stage. 28 & 29 Nov, various venues, £55 weekend ticket, £28.50 day tickets. www.mutationsfestival.com

Celebrating the weekend at one of the best spots in town t’s the weekend! Well, the weekend’s practically here, just a few more days and we’ll have that all important couple of days off work and ready to laugh it up with friends, family and enemies alike. And you know where a surefire place is to go for those laughs? Krater Comedy Club at Komedia. Krater has been about for such a long time it’s easy to take it for granted. We are spoilt in Brighton with the plethora of comedy night that have popped up and then popped down again, offering up everything from storytelling to musical comedy to science-based humorous cleverness, but the constant throughout it all is Krater. Krater is award-winning in so many ways. As well as picking up its own gongs for being the best comedy club in the South East for 12 years from Chortle, resident compere backbone of Krater Stephen Grant has collected his own fair share of awards for being

such an incredible MC. Now, if you think of the number of MCs up and down the country every weekend, and then add in the ones that pop up on the weekdays and the one-off nights too, that’s some kind of perspective as to how good Grant is, and how lucky we are to have him. It’s also worth looking at the history of talent-spotting Krater has. I’ve personally seen Milton Jones, Rufus Hound, Seann Walsh, Zoe Lyons, Nina Conti and Jim Jeffries on Krater line-ups. Add to those the likes of Angela Barnes, Romesh Ranganathan, Brendon Burns, Joe Wilkinson, Micky Flanagan, Sarah Millican, Josh Widdicombe... the names just don’t stop piling up of heady channel 159 or at thelatest.tv

And it works out well for us, as so many big name comedians keep coming back to Komedia and to Brighton because of the fond affection they have of their Krater times. I know – they’ve told me. So what I guess I’m saying is, just because it’s always been there that doesn’t mean we should take it for granted. Krater is still fresh and with its finger firmly on the pulse, with some of the best names on the current circuit playing there each weekend. Frequent 2015 Krater flyers included Joe Lycett, Stu Goldsmith, Paul McCaffrey, Lloyd Langford, Zoe Lyons and Gary Delaney. This weekend’s headliner could be the next McIntyre. Or it could be McIntyre. I’m just saying, it’s a good night out. Krater Comedy Club, Komedia, Friday–Sunday, www.komedia.co.uk/brighton

MIKE WARD AT LARGE

REVIEWS

WITLESS BIRTHDAY GREETINGS 've just sent my nephew a card for his 21st birthday. It took me a while to choose something suitable, but eventually I settled on one with a big ‘21’ on the front, set against a striped background. "Happy Birthday, Ollie," I cleverly made it say underneath, with help from Mr Moonpig. I do hope he likes it, but I very much doubt it. That's because it is, without doubt, the most appallingly unimaginative birthday card you possibly could hope to find. It's a card that screams utter desperation on the part of its sender. In all honesty, I might just as well have posted him a blank piece of cardboard and a set of felt-tips, accompanied by a note saying: "Make your bloody own, pal, I give up." I was sorely tempted, believe me, because the fact is I increasingly hate buying people birthday cards. It doesn't matter if I'm buying from a proper real-world shop, or from one of those websites where you can personalise your selection and/or adorn it with some hilarious photo you've uploaded, of the recipient pulling a silly face or wearing a comedy wig or vomiting underneath the Palace Pier, the fact is I find myself loathing nearly every option I cast my eyes upon. I hate those utterly punchworthy Keep Calm And Carry On things, I hate those replica magazine covers you're meant to want to personalise, I hate the endless lame cartoons, I hate the insipid semi-funereal floral options, I hate any card that bizarrely feels the need to remind the recipient what relation they are to the sender (Happy Birthday To A Dear Half-Brother). My biggest gripe, though, is with the abundance of birthday cards designed these days to amuse the criminally witless. Happy birthday, you ugly fat pig! Happy birthday, you tragic alcoholic! Happy birthday, I'm amazed you're not dead yet! Happy birthday, now go and have some sex, fnarr fnarr! Happy birthday, you smell of poo! etc. I'm paraphrasing, I grant you, but those are pretty much the key messages. Hilarious, I dare say, if I hate the you're aged 12 or under, or have never quite recovered from a insipid, serious head injury, but toesemi-funereal curlingly embarrassing for any floral options grown adult. So, yes, my nephew has ended up with the dreariest, blandest 21st birthday card of all time, because the very idea of me, his uncle, sending him any of the other options is simply too appalling to contemplate. By sparing him the embarrassment of receiving one of those, I'm hoping he'll appreciate I've done him a huge favour. If not, I'll find him a card that calls him an ungrateful little git. I'd imagine I'll be spoilt for choice. Mike Ward is the TV Critic of the Daily Star and the TV Editor of the Daily Express Saturday magazine. The Crucible The Basement, 13 November 2015 ★★★★★ Smoke abounded in this sharp, atmospheric production of Arthur Miller’s classic play. The sound was noteworthy when ending scenes with a loud thunderbolt and total darkness, although the multitracked lite-choral soundtrack could have done with fleshing out. Mark the name Louis Livesey-Clare, his performance as John Proctor was fiery and raw, with good diction and a charisma about him that was riveting. Act Two was the most engaging and well-paced, with Anna Fenton-Garvey’s Elizabeth a restrained but emotional presence that made their turbulent relationship believable. A solid production with fine acting, and being staged in a round made it all the more starkly affecting and intimate. Joe Fuller Duet For One Brighton Little Theatre, 17 November 2015, ★★★★★ Brighton Little Theatre give a fine account of Tom Kempinski’s equally fine play. The cast, John Hartnett as Doctor Feldmann and Lyn Snowdon as Stephanie Abrahams, the violinist suffering from MS, give intelligent and exquisitely nuanced performances which break the heart and illuminate the play's central theme: How do you go on living a life that has meaning when hope no longer exists? The play, which doesn’t offer any easy answers, is a slow burner, but begins to catch fire in the second scene when the gloves come off and the combat between psychiatrist and patient truly begin. The intimate space of the bar area is an ideal venue from which to observe the characters’ pain, struggle and redemption. Gary Mepsted Reasons To Be Pretty New Venture Theatre, 13 November 2015, ★★★★★ ‘Reasons to be Pretty’ is a moving, but very funny play and Tim McQuillen- Wright’s tight direction brings out the real power of the piece. It’s a simple enough story – Steph, played with power by Pamela Sian Evans, thinks her boyfriend Greg, given a touching emotional “unintelligence” by Fintan Shevlin, has said she is “ugly”, “regular” he claims. From this point on we watch their relationship painfully unwinding, when neither wants this to happen. They’re admirably supported by their ‘friends’ played by Scott Roberts and Jen Ley. Warning the language is strong but so are the raw emotions on display. Ivor Gaber The Empire Of Scents Cinecity@Duke of York’s, 16 November 2015, ★★★★★ This loose documentary was shot in pale trendy tones, in a pale trendy French way that was a hugely enjoyable watch. Memorable characters such as Guido Lenssen the mystic perfumer (who has attempted to recreate the scent of the vulva), a charismatic truffle hunter and olfactory therapists discussed the various wonders and importance of our sense of smell. A child perfumer/philosopher wisely concluded that no one wants to smell of poo, urine, garlic or onions, and some history about the importance of whales’ ambergris in perfumes was fascinating. The framing device of Molly Birnbaum losing her sense of smell felt tenuous and unresolved however, but the film was interesting and insightful nevertheless. Joe Fuller

WEDNESDAY 25 The Apprentice BBC1, 9pm It’s Lord Sugar’s party and he’ll fire someone if he wants to, and he certainly wants to after this little debacle. The teams are given a budget of £2,000 each to throw magnificent children’s parties, with an eye on profit and the bottom line. A dream task for one project manager, but an oversight threatens to derail it all.

Peep Show Channel 4, 10pm Mark’s one for a slowburning romance, so when he meets the girl he’s had a crush on since university it only seems right for him to invite her round to his ‘dinner party’. Turns out it’s just dinner for two, which has to be amended tout de suite when she calls and asks if her husband can come too.

Supernatural E4, 10pm Don’t you just hate it when you’re wearing a skin-suit, as an angel, and someone from your vessel’s past pops up? What’s a girl to do? Bit of a rude awakening when you think that you’re the ‘good guys’ to be reminded that you’ve ambushed somebody else’s life, eh Hannah? And Rowena returns, training witches.

THURSDAY 26 Masterchef: The Professionals BBC2, 8pm Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti set the best six chefs from the week’s heats two more challenges in the quarter final. That’d be yummy pastry and scary two-course meal for three of the country’s most experienced food critics. Imagine the guy from ‘Ratatouille’ and you’ll get it.

Ben Fogle: New Lives In The UK Channel Five, 9pm Sometimes those ‘when-I-growup-I’m-gonna-be’ ideas are worth returning to. Ben Fogle has this rather splendid series ferreting those out who truly have followed their pared down dreams. This week he meets Amanda Owen, who is a traditional shepherdess. Nice crook.

Scorpion ITV2, 9pm You remember Sylvester, right? Nervous chap, doesn’t like flying, looks like he’d give good cuddles, and has a sweet thing with Walter’s sister. Perfect person to keep his cool when undercover in a federal prison. Hmm. So there will be no problem at all when Molina refuses to help get him out. Breathe Sylvester, breathe.

FRIDAY 27 TFI Friday Channel 4, 8pm Chris Evans hosts the halls of mischief and hails the start of the weekend with his guests. It’s a bit of a party, a bit of an interview, and a bit of just having loads of fun and mucking about. This week’s mucking about companions are Ellie Goulding, The Vamps, Wolf Alice and Jamie Lawson.

NCIS: New Orleans Channel Five, 9pm You know what attention-seekers baddies are, so you’ve got to be careful if they feel neglected. Like the elusive Baitfish, who only goes and does in someone close to the NCIS team. It’s a ‘message’ apparently. Buy a card! Anyway, there’s a city-wide manhunt which threatens to push LaSalle over the edge.

The Big Bang Theory E4, 7.30pm It’s more geek chic than you can shake a World Of Warcraft hammer at, with a tripple bill of Big Bang tonight. First off, Sheldon tries to talk to Alex about her flirtatious ways with Leonard. Then a girls trip to Vegas turns into D&D with the whole gang. And finally, Bernadette asks Stuart for comic book help.

SUNDAY 29 Jekyll And Hyde ITV1, 7pm Isn’t it nice to go on a holiday in the countryside? Robert’s off to see a distant branch of the family. Bet the landscape’ll be stunning – shame Robert and Max arrive to hear of a series of murders that have occurred in the village, supposedly by a ‘demon dog’. So... a naughty dog did it? Don’t blame the pooch.

The Secret History Of The British Garden BBC2, 9pm Monty Don explores the history and evolution of the British garden. Looking at 19th century developments, it’s hardly a surprise that exotic plants start to make an appearance, considering the growth of the empire. Monty visits Queen Victoria’s royal retreat.

Josh BBC3, 12.20am What better way to round off the weekend than with some extra squeezed in laughter? Et voila! Josh Widdicombe’s flatshare sitcom shouldn’t be any different from the plethora of flatshare sitcoms that have come and gone, but this is actually funny and fresh, and ridiculously silly in a strangely believable way.
