'm not a Luddite, but I've realised that I've been getting by on below par techno knowledge for quite some time now. Comedian Daniel Kitson used to say that he held bits of information in other people's heads. We all do it. When's your aunt's birthday? Dunno, just ask Mum. Every year. Around the same time. This also works with cake recipes, significant others' work shifts and that rhyme with all the names of the kings. I especially do this with techy stuff. I first started doing this when I was actually working at a techy magazine as a writer. I'd learnt to blag it, meaning I could talk the talk about setting up a network of machines and adding an external drive for extra memory, but someone was going to have to actually launch Microsoft Word for me. I've been getting by for years busking it with odd bits of help garnered from various quarters. 'Help', in this case is otherwise known as 'doing it for me'. So when I decided I wanted to burn some audio bits onto a CD I was rudely awakened to the fact that

I'm about ten years behind where I need to be in the tech knowledge stakes. I've been doing myself no favours whatsoever in skiving on my homework. There is some information I need to move from other people's heads into mine on a permanent basis, rather than simply seasonal visits. If I can bake bread, hook up my Bluray player, and top up the pressure on my boiler already, I can pick up a few more IT skills too. I can update the ones I have. I can move my laptop further into the 21st century than my wardrobe is. Now there's a new year's resolution to consider.

thelatest.tv delivered in a fairly light and humorous manner. And that’s another key part of the show. I don’t take too many of these subjects seriously. That’s because of my general attitude where I don’t take life too seriously. For instance, one of the topics we explored on a previous episode, was death. Now I think we take death fairly seriously in this country and we have a bit of a stigma attached to it. Almost like it ello there. I hope you’re well. How’s your life? Have you ever sat down and really thought about all the weird and wonderful things that affect your life? If you have, well done, you are already on board. If you haven’t, allow me to help. I’ve come up with a TV show, imaginatively called ‘Guy Lloyd’s Telly Show,’ that does exactly that. I devote 22 minutes of airtime to explore two random subjects that affect our lives. These subjects could be anything but they have to be relatable to humans such as you and I, and they have to be subjects that are discussed before the watershed. Which is why my ‘S&M Special’ is on hold for now.
H
At the time of writing, we are currently on Episode 19 and so far we have covered subjects as diverse as god, guilty pleasures, swearing, the end of the world and anger. Like I said, it could be anything that affects your life. The problem is though, I find that we are all so busy going about our everyday lives, we give very little thought to some if not all of these subjects. Which is where I come in. On the show I give my thoughts and experiences on the subject, we then explore YouTube for any film clips related to the topic under discussion and then I go in to the streets of Brighton and get the views of the Great British watch on

should never really be talked about. So what are our fears about death? It makes for interesting telly, when you asked a stranger in the street “are you scared of dying?”. But we’re all going to die aren’t we? It’s a sad thing for anyone to lose someone they love but if we were better prepared for it, could that ease our grief? I suspect it might. So hopefully you can see what I’m trying to achieve. I’m tackling this thing called life and I’m trying to do it in a thought-provoking but entertaining way. Get on board. You can watch Guy Lloyd’s Telly Show every Friday at 7pm, repeated Saturdays at 7.30pm.
public. And that’s probably my favourite part of the show. You get to understand, very quickly, how individual people are and how many varied opinions there are on any one subject. I also find it amazing how strangers will completely open up to a TV presenter, with a camera shoved in their face and be willing to discuss quite personal stuff. It’s a very rewarding part of the job, being able to connect with people and I guess that’s the underlying theme of the show. I think there’s too much crap fed to us on TV and I just want viewers to be able to hopefully connect with what I’m saying but also give them a chance to think about these things. Nothing too taxing. Just a moment to think about how you feel about the topic under discussion. It’s not Panorama but I like to think its thought-provoking TV, channel 159 or at thelatest.tv

But magical miracle people are more than those that complete their own versions of scaling buildings in a single bound. FLAT PACK FLOUNDERING lat pack? More like flat out. Let me elaborate. I went home to visit mum a few weeks back. Regular readers will know that she is quite a character, nobody’s fool, bright as a button and sharp as a knife – and at 83 she is very aware of time and how fast it moves on. Not that I needed reminding of that. She was as always pleased to see me, and me her, and we had a great time, four days of catching up – and when I say catching up, I mean CATCHING UP. Mum is very aware not only of her age but also of mine and she was keen to remind me that I will very soon be 60. Now I am fully aware of this, and also aware that one can never actually catch up in the getting older stakes. That said, as I get older the difference in our ages does change. At 23 I was half her age, now as I approach 60 and she is 83 that difference is far smaller. I don’t get maths but I do get this. Anyway, she recognises that 60 is for me something of a milestone and wanted to make sure that she marks it in a major way. Having a birthday in February my parents would often try to bundle a Christmas and birthday gift into one. “One big one or two small ones?” they would ask. I soon realised that one big one was a better deal, by February they would always feel the need to buy a second birthday gift anyway. So as we sat eating liquorice and chatting mum decided that it was time to broach the subject of a birthday gift. Well as you might imagine, at 59 there are few things that I really need. Mum is not one for giving gifts of money really but in the end she decided to give me some cash to buy something that I really want. I decided that I should choose something, show her what and buy it there and then. So I sat back in dad’s old reclining chair and wracked my brain. There it was, a new armchair, one that I could

relax in and enjoy looking at. There was only one choice and very soon I was goggling at Google trying to find it. Which chair should be obvious to anyone how really knows me, it had to be a Charles Eames ‘Relax’ Lounge Chair and Ottoman. This classic combination was designed especially for director Billy Wilder in 1956. Well 1956 was the year of my birth so it seemed more than appropriate that this would be my birthday gift. Next came the ordeal of finding the chair from a reputable source and at the right price. I was flabbergasted by the number of models that were available. Of

course most are inspired by the Eames original, which it seems is a clever way of marketing what is perhaps a copy if not a counterfeit. How I would have loved to be able to buy an original, but the prices... well let’s say that they were beyond my budget. After a few hours of trawling through websites and reading reviews and testimonials I found one in the right colours – veneer, walnut – and at the right price. I sent a link to mum’s iPad, yes she is a techno-crumbly, and she loved it. So we bought it, there and then. Having waited a silly amount of time for a new sofa this year, I was channel 159 or at thelatest.tv

prepared to wait until at least February for the chair. Four months for the sofa, four days for the chair. I was amazed! I was even more amazed when the doorbell rang. I had been able to track online where the parcel was from the minute the order confirmation came through. On the morning of delivery I was sent a message saying that it would be with me between 13.04 and 14.04. Oddly specific and wonderfully prophetic as the bell rang at 13.05. There was Sam with a huge box, a very heavy box! He placed it in my porch and with a smile said”I’ll get the other one.” Two huge and very heavy boxes! I could barely move around them as they filled one end of my bijou living room. I signed for them, smiled and sat down with a sigh. I had known that the chair would require some assembly. What I did not realise was that it would take as long as it did. I returned to my desk and carried on working, but the monolithic presence to my rear was haunting me. At 4pm I gave in and opened box one. Inside I found a single photocopied sheet of sparse instructions, an odd looking tool and an assortment of bits. I found a tray and counted out all the small parts checking them against the photocopy. Everything was there. I sighed with relief. Box two held the remainder of the parts and was scarily heavy. And so the journey began. I started off easily enough, the foothills of flat pack mountain so to speak. An hour later, and bathed in the sweat of exertion, I prepared myself for the final ascent. It was rocky terrain but the summit was in sight, the sleek design, the curved walnut and soft black Italian leather was all coming together. By six it was done and my lounge looked like a Heal’s Christmas window, design icon amidst a drift of polystyrene snow. I ignored the mess and sat back. Happy early birthday to me and thanks mum.

ess is having a haircut as an attempt to banish the demons of romance past. Trouble is, she’s as embroiled as ever, this time by shoving her oar into Mytton and Irish Nicola’s business. Rumour has it they’re on the rocks and Jess has advised him to “take a break” a la Ross and Rachel. In order to set up Nicola’s fury, there is a pointless scene of her in a chauffeur driven car, leaving Mytton a voicemail telling him they need to talk. She is then dropped off on the side of the North Circular with her bags. Rosie’s slagging Lucy’s dress sense off after hearing that Lucy called her fashionably irrelevant. Apparently Rosie wasn’t impressed with her dress choice at the music recital last week, claiming that she was practically in her négligée. Nicola and Mytton are attempting to sort out their issues. It transpires that he went to Ibiza without telling her. Just when you think he has managed to trick her into believing that he didn’t touch anyone else’s supple thighs whilst there, Toff drops by with the news that Mytton texted Jess for advice. Nicola demands to see the text thread but conveniently his phone seems to have blown up and deleted them. She wants to know why Mytton didn’t tell her about this. “I forgot,” he claims. “What else did you forget in Ibiza?” Nicola asks, wryly. She then takes matters into her own hands and summons Jess (who comes to see her literally dressed like a Norwegian exchange student) and asks to see the texts on her phone. Jess is tentative but shows her. We get a glimpse but really we want a transcript – a transcript of Mytton’s entire texting history over the past two years. Whilst shopping for champagne, Tallulah tells Victoria that she and Spenny have been doing the knickerless fandango. This Social information then comes out disruption at Victoria’s weird bespoke and vindictive cake baking class, rendering meddling is no Emma a laughing stock (she’s not invited to cake longer taboo baking because everyone despises her). Jamie tells Spenny that it’s sensible for him not to be tying himself down to one woman. No one is shocked that he feels this way. Spenny’s with Emma trying to understand her ridiculous affected accent and Victoria strolls over like a dog with a bone to disrupt things. This is what’s so great about MIC (and life) these days. Social disruption and vindictive meddling is no longer taboo and is executed much more openly nowadays so Victoria has no qualms in announcing the news that Spenny has been fondling Tallulah. Mytton and Nicola discuss their issues on a balcony and I literally think one of them is going to chuck the other one off it. But no. Just a regular old argument and storm off situation this time. ANDREW KAY DINES OUT Follow me: latestandrew ANDREWKAY100
…& DINES IN es, my column header might be slightly misleading this week as I did not head off to some interesting new or indeed some reliable old favourite restaurant. Far from it, this week I rolled up my sleeves and got well and truly stuck in. It all started some months back with an invitation. Would I like to attend a cookery course one evening in Brighton? Well I said yes, of course I did. Anyone who knows me well will know that as well as loving to eat I love to cook. That is why I got into this game, through my love of cooking as much as a love of eating. Friends will also know that I am pretty happy to leave the preparation of asian cuisine to the professionals – and I don’t think with award winning chefs I will be Kanthi Thamma and Alun Sperring amongst my friends challenging Hari, you should know why. Both Kanthi or Alun have received great accolades any time soon once again this year, Curry Leaf Cafe won best newcomer but I am better on the South Coast and Chilli prepared to Pickle Canteen best taketackle something away in the UK at Recent spicy at home Indian Food Awards. My congratulations to them both. Back to my cookery class, which was an Indian lesson conducted by Hari Ghotra. Hari currently cooks at the Michelin starred Tamarind in Mayfair. Hari is a real charmer, delightful in every sense and the format of her class, at which I joined a very jolly bunch of local lifestyle bloggers, was very relaxed and hands-on. I was hands-on from the get-go and pretty soon was up to my neck in flour and water making pastry for samosas. After a quick demo I was keen to copy her rolling technique, which looked simple enough, but proved to take quite a few goes before I was anything like proficient. But very soon I was rolling and filling like a good-un. Along the counter the rest of the girls were making crisp pakora, seasonal turkey kebabs (perhaps the only reasonable use for dull old

turkey to my way of thinking) and some very delicious fishcakes. I wil most definitely be using the samosa concept in the future, not only to make the spices asian variety, but adapting it to make a few sweet varieties too. I will also be taking Hari’s crisp coating of deep fried vermicelli into my repertoire too. That really was a great idea that I will add to my menus in future. Above all what I gained from the evening, as well as some rather nice new girl friends, yes I was the only man there, was a realisation that traditionally the best of Indian dishes come from simple home cooking. Nothing that we tackled was beyond the bounds of a standard kitchen nor the skill of a home cook. Most of the ingredients were familiar and easy to get and we certainly didn’t need any specialist equipment. The biggest shock of the evening was that we were being filmed and streamed live to the world wide webby thing. I wish I had known, I might have combed my moustache and worn a brighter shirt. The evening was great fun and admirably lubricated with wines, some rather good Indian wines I hasten to add, and a tasty cardamom infused ale – again very interesting. I don’t think I will be challenging Hari, Kanthi or Alun any time soon, but I do feel now that I am better prepared to tackle something spicy at home. LATEST PEOPLE PETER JAMES HOSTS MEDIATION CELEBRATION To mark 21 years of providing mediation support to local residents Brighton and Hove Independent Mediation Service (BHIMS) held a special birthday celebration on Wednesday 25th November 2015. The event, hosted by BHIMS Patron, author Peter James, was attended by representatives from local statutory and voluntary organisations including Sussex Police, all of whom have supported BHIMS over the years. More people than ever are benefiting from the services of BHIMS. This year referrals are expected to reach a record high. The organisation’s core business is providing community mediation, one-to-one conflict coaching, tailor-made training packages and workplace mediation. An independent charity since 1994 BHIMS operates in Brighton, Hove and Lewes area. The 40-plus team of trained mediators are all volunteers following a sequence of steps which allow all involved in a dispute the opportunity to ‘have their say’ and identify possible solutions.

SCIENCE UNLOCKING POTENTIAL
BRIGHTON’S ARTY ALISON KROG
Dr Caroline Oprandi keeping you up to date with science & technology at PACA
A MULTI-DIMENSIONAL CHALLENGE
e have just entered our coding programme for the competition of Young Engineer of the Year Award. Dexter, one of the students, has picked up a robot that I built at the University of York National STEM Centre. The fact that I was able to build a robot in the first place still amazes me but this is largely due to the fact that we now have the technology that makes it simpler to construct robots and also coding programmes that are very easy to follow. Machines do all It doesn’t surprise me that the work, and the latest report we basically play from the Bank of America Merrill Lynch looking at the likely effects of a robot revolution; has forecast huge numbers of jobs being wiped out: up to 35% of all workers in the UK and 47% of those in the US, including white-collar jobs, seeing their livelihoods taken away by machines. This can only be good news, if with the coming robot revolution, society benefits as a whole. So for those that lose their jobs to robots, it means that they have more leisure time and their standard of living is enhanced. The new Director of Engineering at Google, Ray Kurzwel, in an interview for the Observer said, “I think our best hope going forward is figuring out how to live in an economy of radical abundance, where machines do all the work, and we basically play.” Kurzwel has a job description at Google that consists of one brief line: help bring natural language understanding to Google. Kurzwel predicts that by 2045 computers will be a billion times more powerful than all of the human brains on Earth. And it's the Google-scale resources that are beyond anything the world has seen before. Such as the huge data sets that result from 1 billion people using Google every single day. And the Google knowledge graph, which consists of 800m concepts and the billions of relationships between them. This is already a neural network, a massive, distributed global "brain". Can it learn? Can it think? It's what some of the smartest people on the planet are working on next. Kurzwel realised that one of the key things about inventing successful new products was inventing them at the right moment, and "so, as an engineer, I collected a lot of data" (sourced from the Observer - Carole Cadwalladr). However, the danger lies in where individuals who lose their jobs do not reap the benefits and the benefits of the robotic revolution are only enjoyed by a few i.e. those who own Artificial Intelligence (AI). Calum Chace, author of Surviving AI, says, “There will be people who own the AI, and therefore own everything else, which means homo sapiens will be split into a handful of ‘gods’, and then the rest of us.” At the moment we have to hope that the ‘gods’ of AI will treat the rest of us with compassion and see the benefit in enhancing living standards for all on a global scale. Because, let’s face it, who wants to read what I’ve got to say when you can get a taste of what will be on show at Naked Eye in Farm Mews for two weeks from 11 December. But which artwork can I tempt you with? Because the new exhibition ‘Dada + 8’ features (unsurprisingly) eight pretty amazing and completely contrasting approaches and styles. Alex Binnie, Simon Dixon, Chris Kettle, David Chris Kettle Levine, Paul Ostrer, Joseph Rossi, Jim Sanders and Sarah Shaw have all been given the same dimensions – 1.5m by 2m – in the gallery to display their creations, which range from screen-printing, oil painting and gothic collage to black and white photography, steel art, mixed media and more. With such a multitude of artistic forms, you’ll be spoilt for choice. And if you can’t afford an original, there will be loads of lovely prints for sale as well. GET ON BOARD BRIGHTON & HOVE BUSES
A pilgrimage to Gran Canaria
Christmas & New Year services
hen I was younger, my lesbian flatmate and I hatched a plan to travel to Gran Canaria for a week of fun in the sun. The appeal at that time, so far as I can remember, centred around the island’s reputation as a gay mecca and party hot spot. As two of Brighton’s most diehard party monsters, the trip was to be our equivalent of the Hajj, but with the welcome addition of vodka and sausages. Our grand plan, however, never came to fruition. Maybe it was because we were in the habit of frittering our meagre 20-something wages on Brighton’s own gay scene, or maybe because we were so far in arrears that every knock at the door would send us diving behind our ratty furniture, but one way or another, other expenses took priority. Flash forward 10 years, and my plimsolls are finally touching the tarmac at Gran Canaria airport, the horizon wavering in 27 degree heat. Far from a party pilgrimage, though, the main reason my partner and I chose Playa de Ingles – a resort town on the southernmost tip of the southernmost of the Canary Islands – as a holiday destination is because we reasoned it was the closest a young gay couple could get to equatorial heat in November without a) breaking the bank, or b) being The buried up to our necks in sand for pervading crimes against nature. feeling is one The only gay mecca I’m of tolerance interested in visiting these days, now that I’m over 30 (and & bonhomie therefore, in gay years, practically a museum exhibit), is Waitrose, so the presence of a thriving gay scene on the island has filled me with trepidation. What if it’s noisy? What if there are drunk people staggering around the streets? Or worse; what if I don’t recognise any of the songs playing, like the last time I went to a gay bar with a group of people in their 20s and had to spend all night hopelessly asking, “Is this JLS?” As it turns out, I don’t have to worry about any of these things. The proliferation of bars, clubs and restaurants that characterise the Gran Canaria scene (most of them clustered in a rambling 1980s shopping centre called the Yumbo Center) take me back to the best aspects of the gay venues I used to haunt. Friendly, happy crowds, drawn together from across Europe and further afield; Belgians sharing beers with Brazilians; Germany and Hungary, together in perfect harmony. The pervading feeling is one of tolerance and bonhomie, overlaid – it is a gay scene after all – with an alluring frisson of hyper-sexuality, all set to the soundtrack of Madonna’s back-catalogue (1993-2005). Yes, it is noisy (we don’t mind). Yes, there are drunk people staggering around the streets (most nights it’s us). But best of all, I had forgotten that the music pumped on to European dance floors lags about 10-15 years behind ours, so we are effectively dancing to the music of my youth. So I get my pilgrimage after all.

ENTERTAINMENT JOE FULLER Christmassy choral festive fun t's the season for singing, wherein we all love to sing along to things, be it warbling with a CD over dinner or in a local choir. I love it, singing is always spirited and often joyful, plus there’s something particularly special about it near Christmas time (even for the secularist). Brighton Orpheus Choir present a 'Music for Christmas' concert that certainly fits my excitable alliterative headline bill for festive fun, pairing part one of Handel's hugely popular ‘Messiah’ with Vaughan Williams' ‘Hodie’ (This Day). It has become a tradition to hear ‘Messiah’ before Christmas, and for good reason, the beloved German's music is warm, spritely and beautiful. ‘Hodie’ also deals with Jesus' birth and features songs, hymns, chorales and more, and will be sung by the Orpheus Young Singers, a new choir for 9 to 13 year olds. A very different sort of Christmas concert comes from the Mediaeval Baebes, who will be singing carols from their Top Ten album 'Of Kings & Angels' along with other contemporary and traditional songs. The allfemale septet will veer from classics like 'In The Bleak Midwinter' to lesser known mediaeval songs like 'Gaudete' and there will also be a setting of 15th century English poem 'Ther is no rose of swych vertu'. That means ‘such virtue’ by the way, if you were curious. I attended the BFC's Christmas Concert myself last year and it felt wonderfully communal and lively. You are given song sheets to sing along with (although you could feasibly bow out if that's not your cup of tea) so it will be a different experience to the Orpheus Choir concert. The programme will include a cover of the Lily Allen cover of Keane's 'Somewhere Only We Know' from the Youth Choir as well as Britten's solemn 'Chorale after an Old French Carol' and Poulenc's jubilant 'Hodie Christus natus est' from the main choir. We are spoiled for choice this week. I am looking forward to attending one of these three concerts to catch up with chums, so if you go you can play spot the Latest 7 writer! STAGE ANDREW KAY CHICHESTER CHANGE
Brighton’s Original Alternative Adult Pantomime
Chichester Festival Theatre appoints Daniel Evans as new Artistic Director hichester Festival Theatre Chairman, Sir William Castell, announced last week that the Board has appointed Daniel Evans to succeed Jonathan Church as Artistic Director of Chichester Festival Theatre. Daniel Evans has been Artistic Director of Sheffield Theatres since 2009. He will take up his new post in July 2016. Sir William said: “I am delighted to confirm Daniel Evans as our next artistic leader. After a comprehensive search, we were presented with a very accomplished shortlist of candidates but it was clear that Daniel’s breadth of experience as a director and actor makes him a brilliant fit for Chichester Festival Theatre. He is widely admired for championing classical work and musicals alongside a commitment to new writing, and his passion for theatre is infectious. I am very happy he has chosen to share that with us as we look forward to a terrific future for CFT.” Daniel Evans said: “I am truly delighted to be asked by the Board at Chichester Festival Theatre to become its next Artistic Director. Under the leadership of Jonathan Church and Executive Director Alan Finch, Chichester has developed into the most incredible theatrical powerhouse which has fed and nourished the local community in the South East as well as the theatre ecology throughout the UK and internationally. I look forward to collaborating with the team in West Sussex to develop that work further as the organisation evolves into this next exciting chapter in its history. “I am hugely grateful to the entire staff at Sheffield Theatres and I’m deeply proud of the bold, passionate and enriching work we’ve achieved together in our City Region. It has been a real privilege to lead the organisation for the last seven years.” Jonathan Church, who leaves Chichester in September 2016, added: “I could not be happier with this fantastic news. Daniel is a first-rate director with a real passion for theatre and I’m really pleased to be leaving Chichester Festival Theatre in such good hands. As someone who has lived and worked in Sheffield, I can truly appreciate everything that he has achieved there. Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre has the only other large-scale Guthrie thrust stage in the UK, so Daniel’s experience will sit wonderfully with our audience here in Chichester and be welcomed with great excitement by our staff. “I will continue to programme and deliver our Festival 2016 season as I hand over to Daniel and wish him every good fortune as he takes over the helm.”

Brighton’s Original Alternative Adult Pantomime was founded by the late larger than life theatre empresario Brian Ralfe in 2002, sadly Brian passed away in March this year. Alice In Pantoland will be the 14th consecutive production from this talented Panto Team. Brian’s lifelong friend and Director of the Pantomime group Lee Tracey has stepped up and taken over the reins for what promises to be as ever a “ totally OTT and generally un-PC” production. Alice In Pantoland is a journey through pantomime. Will Alice find his or her Beau?! Will Alice hook ‘Hook’ or an ugly sister? Who knows! The show provides a wonderful contemporary musical journey though Pantoland with comedy and banter along the way. This new production also features three highly talented stars from London’s West End. The yearly production by Brighton’s Original Alternative Adult Pantomime enjoys cult status amongst its year on year followers. Tickets went on sale in July and 10 of the 22 performances have already sold out. This will be their 14th Year at The Brighton Dome Complex. Lee Tracey stars as Dame and Sarah The Cook. Maisie Trollette plays Idle Jack. Phil Harlequeen plays the Fairy Godmother. Jason Prince is Captain Hook. Pooh La May is The Empress of China. Scott Virgo is Dick Whittington. Topsie Redfern is both The Ugly Sister and Alice. Lascel Wood plays The Devil. Jack Seager is Tinkerballs and The White Rabbit. Jack comes from the west end for his first season of Panto. As a skilled and trained classical dancer he played the lead role in Billy Elliot for 4 years. Russell Keith plays Prince Charming and joins the cast and was formally lead vocalist in the West End production of The Jersey Boys. Alice in Pantoland is at the Brighton Dome Studio from January 27th until February 7th 2016. Shows daily at 5pm and 8pm. To book call the Box Office on 01273 709709 or www.brightondome.org

Demob Happy – Brighton band that’s making waves runge seems to be making a little comeback at the moment, and Brighton has one its own contenders in the form of Demob Happy, a powerhouse four-piece that made its way down from Newcastle a few years ago to set up camp here. Already a big hit at this year’s Great Escape, their fearsome yet intricate and melodic stoner grunge rock has won them a sizeable fanbase already, and with their debut album ‘Dream Soda’ having just been released, they are now locked in trying to establish themselves. With influences from the likes of Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age and even 10cc, their grooves are bouncy, and their stage manner infectious. Because I love 60s and 70s music, I like the idea of a concept album. I think it’s quite cool and due a renaissance; cheesy, concept albums,” he laughs. For Matt, ‘Dream Soda’ “represents everything that’s oversugared, force-fed and corporateowned. To us it symbolises the current cultural onslaught that aims to stupefy a generation through mass media and insidious advertising. ‘Dream Soda’ is a parody of all the stupid s*** in the world, this drink that zaps you of your dreams.” The Newcastle born and bred band made their way to Brighton

SHOULD SKY HAVE MORE LIMITS? s both a TV nut and a semi-geek, I must confess I'm quite excited about the new service Sky will be introducing next year. They're calling it Q. Cool name, that. Presumably inspired by James Bond's gadget guy. Or by the music mag. Or possibly by the Royal Botanic Gardens. But what matters most, of course, is what it promises to do – namely, to give us yet more ways to watch the telly. And will that be rather brilliant or what? Well, yes, of course it will. Up to a point. Like I say, I'm quite excited... I won't go into all the technical stuff about what Q can do but its key selling points are: * You can record up to four channels at once, while watching a fifth; * You can transfer recordings to your phone or tablet; * You can put mini Q boxes anywhere in your home, linked to the main one but not needing to be hooked up to the dish. Besides letting you watch different content, these will also let you pause a show in one room and pick it What up in another; ultimately * Q's top-of-the-range option will be ready for Sky's matters is Ultra HD service; quality content * The remote has been and creativity revamped, and will now offer swiping, voice search and a clever way to stop you losing it; So what do I mean when I say all this is good up to a point? Well, it's the fact that – call me Mr Unadventurous – I'm sort of OK with things as they are, telly-watching-wise. Sure, it'll be nice to be able to record four programmes at once. But all this'll really do is double the amount of recorded shows I feel really bad that I never get around to watching. And transferring recordings to my mobile? No doubt I'll love it, but there's already so much stuff out there, downloadable or streamable or both, that I'm hardly starved of content on the move. Ultra HD? Great, but how many people honestly look at a normal HD picture and think, wow, what a heap of fuzzy crap? The new remote? I'm fine with the current one, thanks. In the end, of course, this is all about competitiveness. Rival TV companies are desperate to stay ahead of one another and it's starting to go a bit mental. TV is becoming like multi-blade razors or toothpaste or tea bags, forever bringing out yet more options we never knew we needed. So don't let's lose sight of what ultimately matters here – quality content, creativity and true talent on screen. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have yesterday's Jeremy Vine Show to catch up with. Hairspray Theatre Royal Brighton, 30 November 2015 ★★★★★ To twist a cliché, the Theatre Royal Brighton is beautifully formed – but small, so how the huge company of Hairspray managed to faultlessly use that petite stage is quite frankly brilliant. From the opening number to the final moments of a well deserved curtain call, they simply ripped it up. Hairspray is a joyous bouffant tonsorial delight of a show and this national touring production has been teased to extraordinary heights. Seen the film? Seen the West End production? Yes, of course, but in my opinion this cast is the best yet. Not one weak member in the line-up makes it hard to pull out names but needs must. Tony Maudsley as Edna is beautifully beefy, big and bouncy with a voice that could file down those prison bars. Peter Duncan excels as Wilbur in a show-stopping duet with Edna and Freya Sutton as Tracy is a feisty and sweet voiced creature equal to John Walters’ original vision – and what energy! Claire Sweeney once again proves that behind that bubbly scallylass facade there is a multi-faceted performer of great talent and Brenda Edwards delivers her numbers with pure soul class. But if there is one overwhelming star in this show it is the ensemble dancing and singing and with a cast this full it would be impossible to name them all, save one, choreographer Drew McOnie, who has pushed this to an extraordinary level of physicality balanced with period style – and my word those kids give it their all! This is a great show, great songs, great story, great costumes, great comedy and a great message too – and last night was a memorable night at the theatre. Beg for a ticket! Andrew Kay Adam Kay’s Smutty Christmas Songs Komedia Studio, 30 November 2015, ★★★★★ Christmas came early to Komedia as Adam Kay gave a completely different twist to well known songs. It didn’t matter whether they were Christmas related or not, as his humour took us on a journey into how this unusual mind worked. Not only was his musical repertoire near the bone in terms of comedy, but there were times when there were subtle curveballs that came out of nowhere that kept the audience on their toes. Highlights included audience interaction guessing what would replace the word ‘Hallelujah’, lots of medical references and sometimes corny wordplay in rewriting Christmas carols. Sascha Cooper Simply Red Brighton Centre, 29 November 2015, ★★★★★ 30 years of great talent distilled into one entertaining but outstanding live performance. Mick Hucknall being as energetic as usual, the night was exciting, with the lead singer sending waves of nostalgia and joy into the audience with classics such as ‘Stars’ and ‘Money’s Too Tight (To Mention)’. Bringing along a super group of musicians Simply Red are far from losing their touch, providing the same high standard of music and entertainment in 2015 as they did when they first entered the music scene. With the Brighton Centre packed out and full of hardcore fans the night was never going to disappoint and indeed it did not. Ryan Chambers
