CITY GIRL

IN THE CITY

VICTORIA NANGLE

Professor Brian Cox

ince mid November I’ve been looking forward to putting up my Christmas decorations. To be honest, I’ve even had a few daydreams about making paper chains and festooning them all over the place in a most vulgar fashion, overpowering my home with goodwill over good taste. I haven’t done it, but only because I didn’t pull my finger out and sort it out. Instead I unpacked my trusty two foot fibre optic tree, bought oodles ago for my first home at a discount rate because it didn’t have a box and the marketplace was about to pack up. I no longer plug it in and watch the lights flicker, as I get a bit anxious about the weird noise it makes – always a good rule of thumb when dealing with ancient electricals – but I do drape it with tinsel and festoon it with presents and good will. I also have two homemade Christmas decorations that were made by my sister when she was three. She’s now 25, so the fact that they’re holding together at all bears testament to the marvellous strength of papier mache and too much glue.

The hotly anticipated tour by the acclaimed Professor Brian Cox, OBE. The show will take audiences on a dazzling journey through space and time, delving into ‘high science’ and freewheeling on the edges of the known cosmos. Brighton Centre, 19 November 2016, from £30, www.brightoncentre.co.uk

S

There are a few other Christmas traditions I have – from my early start on the old Christmas present shopping that others seem to find alarming but I like to think of as budgetting frugally; to waiting until the main meal is served before embarking on the cacophony of crackerpulling. (So they’re not over before the meal starts but you can have your pudding wearing paper hats that haven’t torn to bits yet, natch). More than presents, it’s these personal quirks that make up Christmas to me. Some carried forward from family history and some simply evolving from the way that we live. Merry Christmas everybody. And may all of your traditions be bizarre and totally brilliant.

ovember is always a busy time in the sporting calendar in Sussex: The football season is in full flow, it's prime condition for rugby, and basketball gets bigger crowds due to its appeal of being indoors when the chill of winter really hits. And with so many clubs across the county working hard to encourage participation from their members there deserves to be one evening where they're all recognised for their achievement... oh wait! There is. The Sussex Sports Awards is the annual event that brings together clubs, covering a wide array of different sports, from across the county. This year the big night was held at The Grand Hotel in Brighton, and Latest Sport were lucky enough to be invited down to capture the evening. These are the sort of events I relish covering as part of the sports team. To be able to mix with some of the biggest faces in local sport is an honour in itself, but then to be able to talk to them afterwards and find out about their evenings makes it all the more enjoyable. The Albion were represented in the form of Women's Head Coach James Marrs, who was accompanied by midfielder Vicky Ashton-Jones and striker Kim Stenning, who herself picked up the award for Coach of the Year for her terrific work with Albion in the Community - congratulations Kim. As the guests took to their seats special guest presenters Danny Pike and Commonwealth

doing that”. I'm quite happy staying in the background, I think Tatiana probably looks better in the spotlight too. You could tell from the atmosphere in the room how much it meant to all those invited to be there. Even nominees who hadn't won awards came out with grins from ear to ear, whether that was down to the fun they had, the alcohol on offer, or a little of both is yet to be determined. But hey, I don't want to give everything away. If you want to catch the very best of what the sports awards had to offer you can watch our full show on our YouTube: The Latest TV. Heptathlon Gold medalist Louise Hazel took to the podium. It was an interesting pairing that perhaps didn't reach its full potential, but overall the two bounced off each other quite well. Dance troupe the Killa Beez opened the show with their spectacular dance routine. I always find myself astounded at how much time and effort acts like theirs put into learning their routines... but then again that's probably why I'm the one that's behind the camera not the other way round. channel 159 or at thelatest.tv

here are so many reasons to love living in Brighton. Marvellous character – as well as the characters that live here too – plus the shops, the shows, but one thing you can’t overlook is the history of the place. In this week’s Digital Nation a very special class of young students from our fair city have a go at writing, directing, filming, editing and performing the incredible story of the city of Brighton. You might think you’ve heard it all, but this intrepid troupe is full of brilliant surprises.

T

As Brightonians it’s easy to simply dismiss the rest of the country as not having a beach, but it’s simply not true. Get this – other cities love the sea too! Who knew? Well, Digital Nation did. Check out the latest on commuting by paddleboard in Norwich, and an incredible surfing project in Edinburgh that tackles the problems of selfesteem and other mental health issues for the young with the help of a board and the crest of a wave. Magic. It sounds trite, but the achievements of young people are constantly inspiring. In Belfast a partnership of local youth groups are raising awareness of the hidden homeless, particularly the countless number sofasurfing and falling through the cracks in the government’s statistics. How are they doing this? By pushing sofas through the streets of the Northern Irish capital. There’s also some really gorgeous pictures of guinea pigs rescued in Nottingham, and a very talented orangutan with an artistic eye in Lancashire. This week’s Digital Nation really is a smorgasbord of stories! Which is

thelatest.tv just as well as the episode out Christmas week is filled to the gills with incredible tales too. As it’s Christmas week it would be a crime not to mention the marvel that is the annual pantomime. Popping up all over the country, the panto is a peculiarly British kind of a performance, both bawdy and childish, filled with men dressed as mothers and TV stars climbing beanstalks. In Norwich a new exhibition digs deep into the history of the genre, way back to the 1700s when pantos were simply the warm up to the serious stuff. It’s also a good week to take a closer look at the longest cathedral in the world, which just happens to be in Liverpool. It’s got the heaviest bells too, ringing out in this Gothic wonder of ancient architecture and drawing attention to the finer details and stunning stained glass windows. There are loads of engaging and intriguing stories, from the local hero lollipop lady in Manchester, to where exactly the lions of Scotland are rehomed, having been rescued from circuses and the like. Imagine that masterful roar of home once they arrive in this safe haven in Edinburgh! Suffice to say, it’s time to make a date amongst the Christmas shopping and wrapping paper, between the mince pies and long walks, to check in with Digital Nation to have your heart warmed and your funny bone tickled. See you there. Episode 13 is broadcast on 15 December, episode 14 is broadcast on 22 December, both on LatestTV. watch on

MADE IN CHELSEA SEASON 10 EP 7

n her mission to find herself, this week Jess is dabbling in photography. She and Toff go to the autumnal forest to chuck loads of dry, barren, dead leaves around in the hopes of capturing them mid-flutter. The photos don't come out too well so Jess smashes her camera. Outside a church, Ollie and Richard bump into Emma, with her Mark Ronson-esque accent. Ollie allows her to kiss his cheek half-heartedly to which she dares to say “that's a nice welcome” sarcastically. How DARE you Emma! You are not allowed to get all jokey about this situation yet! Ollie is still pretending to be upset by it! His dog, Bear, then growls at her as if she Heracles and Bear is Cerberus the Hound of Hades (but we all know Emma is the Hound of Hades). JP is having a romantic dinner with Elliot who is behaving weirdly. JP asks what's wrong. Apparently he was hanging out with Wheeze the other night and she drunk herself into oblivion and they KISSED!!! Then she stayed until 7 the next day. PM! Whilst out on the tiles, Jess and Emma are at the same bar as Spenny. He and Jess have a bit of a tête a tête. Apparently they once kissed and so naturally its time to re-light that spark just when Jamie's life can't get any worse. Steph gives Toff the green light to go for it with Richard. Not sure why she needs your permission Steph, unless maybe you're Richard's long-lost father? Spenny treats Jess to a nice screw cap, when Lucy and Steph walk into the same restaurant. They then go and tell Jamie and make it sound a hundred times worse than it is. Word has travelled from Elliot to JP, JP to Binky, Binky to Wheeze and Wheeze to Sam that there was a kiss that would have caused all the sofas in the Kingdom of Leather to explode at once. Dressed as A kiss that an Amish woman, Wheeze would have goes to confront Elliot (with caused all the Sam in tow, obvs). She explains that she only drinks sofas in the to make people more Kingdom of interesting and that the Leather to thought of kissing Elliot makes her feel unwell. That's explode at once nice. Richard has invited “a select group” (which basically includes all the usual cast only with the addition of lens-less glasses) to listen to his speech about how wanting to own an island isn't good enough, he wants to own a planet or the sun or something. He hasn't even worn a shirt and tie for the occasion. Toff, however, has dressed how I imagine Cher from Clueless would dress in this situation, and has brought a notepad. Jamie and Jess leave mid-lecture (rude!) to discuss the news that Spenny and her went for a glass of non-corked wine. After the shortest lecture in history, Toff tells Richard that she fancies him and he says no. Poor Toff. Poor Alice-band wearing Toff. Andrew Bullock is a producer, presenter and writer. Award winning actor, Steve Coogan, has decided that he will remain a resident of Brighton after submitting plans for a swimming pool to be built at his home in Ovingdean. The Alan Partridge show star had previously put his seven bedroom, grade II listed house up for sale last summer. However it seems Coogan has changed his mind, a decision on whether or not he will get permission for his pool plans will be made in the New Year. A developing romance with Daisy Lowe, from Downtown Abbey, is thought to be the reason for Coogan’s change of heart. Whatever the reason, we’re glad that he is sticking around.

i360 announces British Airways sponsorship

It will help build the city’s profile further on the national and international stage.” Jeremy Ogden, Chair of Brighton & Hove Hoteliers Association, said, "I am delighted that British Airways has chosen to be the headline sponsor for the i360. It will be very exciting for the city when it opens next year and I hope the combination of this unique attraction and the global BA name will raise the international profile of Brighton and encourage even more people to visit our unique and wonderful city.” Photos: Gary Eastwood & BA i360

SCIENCE UNLOCKING POTENTIAL

BRIGHTON’S ARTY ALISON KROG

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

Dr Caroline Oprandi keeping you up to date with science & technology at PACA e are in the final preparations for our trip to the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, known as CERN. It is one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research and famous for the Large Hadron Collider. Based in Geneva, CERN also operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. Established by a convention in 1954, the mission of CERN has four strands:

W

■ Collaborating - Bringing nations together through science ■ Education - Training the scientists of tomorrow ■ Research - Seeking and finding answers to questions about the universe ■ New Technologies - Advancing the frontiers of technology The prize trip is being paid for by the Science and Technology Facilities Council, as a reward for winning the STEMNet STEM club of the year at the House of Lords. Thank you again to STEMSussex for nominating us! Extra We will fly to Geneva, where we dimensions will have the could explain why opportunity to see gravity is so weak cutting edge science in action, as well as meet with top physicists and engineers from across the facility. Whilst we are out there Dr Darren Baskill from the University of Sussex has arranged for some of his researchers who are posted there, to meet up with us. It’s all very exciting stuff. The World Wide Web was invented at CERN in 1989 by British scientist Tim Berners-Lee and has grown to revolutionize communications worldwide. Apparently the WiFi at CERN is pretty damn good. We will visit the CERN Control Centre and then pay a visit to AMS. Here there will be a live link to the cosmic ray experiment on the International Space Station. We will then visit the ATLAS Experiment, ATLAS is one of two general-purpose detectors at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It investigates a wide range of physics, from the search for the Higgs boson, to extra dimensions and particles that could make up dark matter. Extra dimensions may sound like science fiction, but they could explain why gravity is so weak. A small fridge magnet is enough to create an electromagnetic force greater than the gravitational pull exerted by planet Earth. One possibility is that we don’t feel the full effect of gravity because part of it spreads to extra dimensions. If extra dimensions exist, they could explain why the universe is expanding faster than expected, and why gravity is weaker than the other forces of nature (cited from CERN website). So fingers crossed we won’t accidently slip into an extra dimension and will make it back home for Christmas! Jeff May (one of our Physics Teachers) went to CERN last year and has been busy filling our heads full of facts before we go! Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) is a college offering sixth form, 11-16 years, youth centre, adult learning, community education, sports centre and pre-school. e’ve started to plan next year’s Arty publication – the third edition of our annual coffee-table book celebrating the city’s creative talent. So what can you expect? Well, from the response we’ve had so far from artists wanting their page of the action, just about anything. Because that’s what’s so amazing about our local art scene. The work of classically trained fine artists can sit next to that of self-taught makers and creators, and the result is stunning. Flicking through last year’s coveted tome, it fell open on a double-page spread featuring the work of Hiroko Lewis and Anne French. Anne is selfAnne French taught, but comes from a family of artists. She has worked in many media – cloth, glass, pâpier maché – and experiments constantly with others. But, in spite of (or perhaps because of) its rather prim, genteel reputation, she finds something about découpage and its extraordinary versatility, fascinating. Comic characters who have never met find themselves interacting on a piece of charity shop furniture. Text is scattered parsimoniously. If you take a closer look, these pieces are not quite as they seem at first glance... In complete contrast, Japanese artist Hiroko Lewis creates semiabstract works in oil that draw from and build upon her classical training. Starting with the hint of something remembered or observed, often derived from nature, her work travels to expand these fragments into a new world using a process of repeated construction, destruction, and

reconstruction, in search of another sensory reality. After graduating with a degree in Fine Art from Kanazawa College of Art, Hiroko pursued a career as an artist and visual designer in Japan. Since moving to Brighton in 2011, she has focused on fine art, aiming to express and adapt to her new-found environment. Both Anne and Hiroko will feature in Hiroko Lewis Art in Brighton 2016. We can’t wait to see what new work they will have to share. And if you would like to find out more about being part of the publication, do get in touch. www.artymagazines.com Twitter @brightonsarty

COMMUTABLE WILL HARRIS

GET ON BOARD BRIGHTON & HOVE BUSES

Tessellating travellers

Sustainable Business In Action

s I type this, I am looking at a man sitting in a cupboard. He looks to be a professional sort of man, mid 30s, in the nondescript dark suit and open-collared shirt of the London commuter. He is talking quietly into a Bluetooth headset, rattling off business jargon with a fervent rapidity perfectly matched with the speeding train we are on. Paradigm shift, this. Social currency, that. Whether there’s anyone on the other end of the line, or he’s recording his thoughts in preparation for the world’s most annoying business meeting, I have no idea. My knowledge of this man extends to one simple fact: he is sitting in a cupboard. Maybe calling it a cupboard is wide of the mark. Where he’s actually sitting is the boxed-in area beside the doors to the next carriage, a space normally reserved for luggage, fold-up bicycles, etcetera. Come to mention it, there is a fold-up bicycle in the lower of the compartments right now. And in the upper compartment there is this businessman, if not folded then definitely crumpled, trouser legs swinging with the motion of the train. Between the dangling legs, and facing them, sits a woman in a smart grey trouser suit. She works in Marketing maybe, or Corporate The Law. She doesn’t look any more carriages comfortable sitting on the floor are standing than our fellow commuter does room only, squeezed into the luggage compartment, but this is the and we must evening rush hour home to take what Brighton, the carriages are standing room only, and we must we’re given take what we’re given. Earlier this year, Department for Transport figures revealed that more than one in five passengers on London commuter trains is forced to stand due to overcrowding. Brighton’s trains to and from the capital are no exception. For those of us who choose to make our home here, but are unwilling or unable to surrender the higher earning potential that London affords, it can be easy to feel like overcrowded trains are somehow part of the bargain; a price we must pay. However, isn’t it equally true that commuters are already paying the train companies, most of us to the tune of hundreds of pounds a month? Take the man I’m looking at. If this is his regular commute and not some elective cupboard-riding adventure of a lifetime, he may be contributing at least £3,700 a year to Thameslink’s coffers. The same could be true for the woman forced to sit on the floor, or for any of the people with no option but to stand at the end of another long working day. Is there any other industry where packing people in like this would be acceptable? Can you imagine having dinner in a restaurant where you are forced to sit on the floor, or going to the cinema and having to stand in the aisles? Why do we tolerate this? It’s staggering, given the high level of service modern consumers demand in other areas of our lives, when it comes to overcrowding on trains we keep our opinions in the cupboard.

righton & Hove Buses is honoured to have won Most Sustainable Business Award at this year’s Sussex Business Awards, held at The Grand, Brighton on December 3rd. The panel of judges was impressed with the company’s commitment to fusing together business, people and environment to create a virtuous circle that meets our 50 million customers’ needs while never doing anything that might compromise the city’s residents in generations to come. Brighton & Hove Buses serves more passengers per head of population than anywhere else in the country outside London. Our impact is big. But we want to make our impact on the environment small. Most notably we are investing £24 million – from upgrading older buses so they’re cleaner than Brighton Council’s Low Emission Zone stipulates (reducing particulate matter by 92 per cent and nitrogen oxide by 71 per cent), to buying state of the art buses that are unbeatable on air quality and eight times cleaner than Euro 5 buses. We’ve fitted our fleet with telematics so our 800 drivers know when they are driving inefficiently. A buzzer warns those breaking too hard or accelerating too quickly, for instance. We are pushing the

boundaries of stop-start technology for even greater fuel efficiency from hybrid engines. Brighton & Hove Buses harvests rainwater and use it to flush toilets and wash buses. We’ve even blocked off every other hole in our jet washes, halving water consumption. SEASONAL STRESS MANAGEMENT ccording to The Stress Management Society, one-in-20 people consider Christmas to be more stressful than divorce or burglary. This is not surprising when you think about the amount of planning and spending that are synonymous with the festive season. These issues coupled with the ominously looming day with the inlaws or other family members that you'd rather not spend time with can be a recipe for disaster! So what is stress? While the causes of stress differ from person to person, there is a common theme. Our brain doesn't tend to distinguish between real or imaginary stress, this means that it is often created by what we think might happen as opposed to what will actually happen. If we don't combat stress, the consequences for our mental and physical health can be dire. It can ultimately lead to headaches, insomnia and high blood pressure. So it’s no surprise that people are trying to find the best tried and tested ways to effectively relieve and eliminate it.

The demon sugar...

Monkey business

s Christmas is upon us, our consumption of sugar is set to shoot through the roof in many households. Since the 18th century we have fallen in love with the drug sugar. We as humans have become present day consumer slaves to a sugar based diet; which is ironic as it is a product founded on slave cartels, power, appalling work conditions and misery. It is in no doubt the sweetest poison of all. A multitude of common physical and mental ailments are strongly linked to the consumption of pure refined sugar yet, we think there is nothing wrong in giving it to children from an early age. Of all the foods consumed today refined sugar is considered to be one of the most harmful. In 1915, the national average of sugar consumption (per year) was around 15 to 20 pounds per person. Today the average person consumes his/her body weight in sugar per year plus over 20 pounds of corn syrup. The human body cannot tolerate this large amount of refined carbohydrate. The vital organs in the body are damaged by this gross intake of sugar. Refined sugar is void of all nutrients so the body depletes its own stores of various vitamins, minerals and enzymes. If the body is lacking in nutrients used to metabolise sugar, it will not be able to properly handle it and rid itself of the poisonous residue. This can affect the brain and nervous system, which speeds up cellular death. Sugar also makes the blood thick and slows blood flow. Diabetes is caused by the failure of the pancreas, which wears out from overwork when diabetes rears its ugly head. Too much sugar can leave you feeling tired; it is also becoming increasingly linked to mental problems such as erratic and emotional outbursts which often follow a sugar binge. Sugar is a drug in its refined state, Dr David Reuben author of ‘Everything you always wanted to know about nutrition’, says white refined sugar is not a food, it is a pure chemical extracted from plant sources. Purer in fact than cocaine which it resembles in many ways. Its true name is sucrose and its chemical formal is C12H22011. But we give it to children in handfuls, does not add up really, does it? Sugar manufacturers defend their products whilst drug dealing on a legally massive scale. A 12oz well known can of fizzy drink contains 11 teaspoons of sugar. It is easy to see why so many health problems are potentially linked to sugar such as joint pain, joint inflammation, acute contributor to arthritis and diabetes, it’s endless. I was reading on the NHS website that as many as 24,000 people with diabetes are dying unnecessarily each year. It seems that sugar is no good to humans at all apart from making some very rich. So enjoy your crimbo, but less sugar the better I say. In the New Year I am going to do an experiment, no refined sugar for one month and there will be a video diary. I might get a little cranky. The views & opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of Latest 7

he Wave goody-bag is bereft of products to test this month, it is however overflowing with praise for Gary Collins, the mastermind and creator of Natreco.com. Gary was galvanised into founding the natural and organic marketplace following a jungletrek to Borneo last year, where he and his wife visited the Orangutans synonymous with the island. Although enjoying time spent watching the beautiful creatures frolicking in the natural surroundings, they were both horrified by what they witnessed during the small plane ride back to the village. Flying over the jungle, just a few miles from where they had initially spent time with the primates, the couple were confronted with an ugly spectacle. Mile upon mile of burnt down smouldering trees and blackened stumps that protruded desperately skywards like a sea of charred amputations. The uplifting memories of the Orangutan experience quickly dissipated as Gary learned from the pilot that 80% of the island’s jungle had been lost to either logging or palm oil plantations. This was the pivotal moment that led to a life changing decision, causing him to quit his job in favour of starting up the new business venture, bolstered by a desire to help save The Rainforest. 80% of Firstly, Gary who is an animal the island’s lover and vegetarian, made the jungle had been decision to stop purchasing products containing palm oil. lost Discovering that palm oil features in approximately half of the products on supermarket shelves (ranging from shampoo to ice cream) he quickly realised how difficult it is to eliminate from everyday life, so began compiling a list of palm oil free products. During this process his business idea came into fruition. Natreco.com are an online marketplace selling only palm oil free products or those containing sustainably farmed palm oil. In conjunction with this customers are also able to shop for thousands of organic, fair-trade,vegan and gluten/paraben free products, ranging from pasta to blusher – all having gone through a very strict vetting process. The website was launched last month, and although proud of his achievements, Gary believes that the success of his business will be measured ten years from now if people can still go and see Orangutans and other endangered animals in the wild. I must applaud him for putting his conscience into action and creating a business that truly will make a difference. If other large corporations were to follow suit and actually put people (or the planet) before profit, how much better off would we all be? As one of my hero's Dr Seuss once said in eco story ‘The Lorax’: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.” It is very clear that Gary Collins does. CHURCHILL SQUARE

Queer New Year and a Viennese Gala

Christmas Grotto launch

hristmas at Churchill Square kicked off last week with the launch of the Christmas Grotto and the annual Christmas Giving Tree appeal for Chestnut Tree House hospice. The Giving Tree was officially launched by Brighton and Hove Albion players Casper Ankergren and Inigo Calderon together with the Brighton Gay Men's Chorus. This is the sixth year that Churchill Square has supported the hospice with the Christmas Giving Tree appeal. Children at the hospice write their Christmas wish lists on special gift tags, which are then tied to the Christmas tree at Churchill Square. To donate a Christmas gift to a child at the hospice, simply select a label, purchase a gift and hand it in to Customer Services. Alternatively, you can choose your own gift. Thanks to the generosity of Churchill Square shoppers, previous appeals have seen thousands of pounds worth of gifts donated to children at the hospice. The theme for Churchill Square’s Santa’s Grotto this year is The Christmas Pudding Factory. There will be loads of fun activities for children to take part in and all the action takes place inside a giant inflatable pudding! www.churchillsquare.com

he extent of how gay-friendly Brighton is is rightly championed, and I think that this extends to being welcoming in general and greatly adds to the diversity of things to do in the city. To celebrate both Brighton's progressive spirit and the high calibre of arts and good nights out, I've chosen two fairly different highlights for New Year's Eve. Billed as “Brighton's queer night for the unusual crowd”, Traumfrau has become a popular underground event for anyone who wants a change of scene from mainstream clubs. A smorgasbord of DJs, performers, art, food and dancing come to the big Wagner Hall, as well as an enigmatic “garden with fire”. DJs include Von Petrovosky, Alex Spinks and Dolly Dollycore, and performances and art come from drag prince Alfie Ordinary, famous beauty blogger #FitAs and Lydia L'Scabies' outrageous neo drag. You can also expect surprises like the New Year Revolution, a participatory experiment designed to make your life better after the holidays and Daniel Hills' “This is not an egg”, a task based performance ruminating on the notion of choice. Excitingly, and A change of handily, if you're not scene from sure where to start with your look on the night mainstream clubs then K I N G D O M are on hand to fix your facial hair and bring out your inner drag king. A pound of every ticket will be donated to MindOut, a Brighton-based LGBTQ mental health service who will also be present on the night. The Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra present their annual New Year's Eve Viennese Gala at the Dome’s mighty Concert Hall. Young Australian soprano Kiandra Howarth and the orchestra aim to take you to Vienna in the 19th century. In case you didn't know, that is the place of the polkas, waltzes and marches of the Strauss family. Conductor Laureate Barry Wordsworth will lead a superb programme with short pieces from Johan Strauss II, Eduard and Josef Strauss, Franz Lehár, Puccini and more. I saw Strauss II's Die Fledermaus earlier this year and the music was lively and opulent, so the performance should be enjoyable and spritely to ring in the New Year. As always with the BPO, students and under 16s get 50% off. Plus, it's in the afternoon so you could drink in some uplifting classical music and then drink in lots of drink and fun in the evening. Or not drink and have a clearer head to better imbibe all of the culture. Have a good New Year's Eve! STAGE ANDREW KAY

PUNT & MENACE

I can sing better than I can dance. Especially when surrounded by trained dancers. I will look like an embarrassing dad at a party – which, in a way, I am.

Steve Punt is time warping his way into Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show this Christmas at the Theatre Royal Brighton

hilst Riff Raff stalks the stage and Rocky rocks out, Steve Punt will be laconically lurking and leering as he takes on the role of narrator. It’s a job that has fallen into some very expert hands in the past so how will Steve be approaching the role in the most iconically scary of modern musicals?

W

When did you first see The Rocky Horror Show, was it a live production or the movie? I saw the movie first. I was in Hamburg, on a school trip. Were you already familiar with the show and of course the songs? Fairly, but not with the detail of the arrangements and harmonies! The role of narrator has been played by some big names already, what do you hope to bring to the part? Will you be wearing the traditional velvet smoking jacket or have you an alternative look? Immense gravitas, and a really nice jacket! The narrator often ends up in lingerie. Have you ever worn suspenders and stockings before and, if you can tell us, why? Oddly enough, a friend and I did the Time Warp at my 18th birthday party, in drag.

Does this inspire you to do more acting work? Hopefully. But this country's full of good actors, so it's a very crowded market.

The narrator carries a huge leather bound tome, do you read the lines or have you learnt them? I've learned them, but the audience participation is tricky to prepare for!

Have you met creator Richard O’Brien? Yes. He was in one of the first scripts I ever wrote, a radio play called Project Santa Claus. I also played him, in a Crystal Maze spoof on the Jasper Carrott show about 25 years ago!

You spend much or your time writing and editing so how much do you still enjoy live performance and of course touring? It's what business types call your "core activity". Comedy only really exists when it has an audience.

Given a choice which is better, the stage show or the movie? I love live music. The film is terrific, but there's something about real drums and live vocals that is unmatchable.

The Time Warp, did it come easy to you or do you have two left feet? And on that note can you sing or do you just mouth the words? I can sing better than I can dance. Especially when surrounded by trained dancers. I will look like an embarrassing dad at a party – which, in a way, I am

The show is legendary, had you ever harboured a desire to be in it? And if so which part? When I first saw it, I wanted to play Riff-Raff, mostly so I could deliver the line “you're wet”. But the narrator is the only part I can play without a year of vocal training.

Will you be living in Brighton during the run and if so how do you plan to spend your free time? I know Brighton fairly well – my grandparents lived in Seaford – but it is Christmas, so I'll be shuttling up and down a bit to see my family too. AND SO THIS IS CHRISTMAS idn't take them long to crawl out of the woodwork, did it? The anti-Christmas-telly mob, I mean. The grumps who, every year at this time, love to tell us just how awful the latest festive TV line-up is. Yep, all of it. So, have they actually seen any of these programmes in advance? Course not. Even if they could, why bother? It's all going to be rubbish, blah blah. Downton Abbey, Doctor Who? Utter tosh, apparently. The Agatha Christie three-parter, BBC1’s Dickensian, the New Year’s Day Sherlock episode, the Peter Kay and David Beckham documentaries? Makes them want to throw their tellies off the end of the pier. You get the general idea. The first, As a rule, these moaners fall into and easily one of two categories. the most The first, and easily the most annoying, are the box-set snobs. annoying, are Those smug pseudo-intellectuals the box-set who love to imply that mainstream snobs TV is beneath them. You know the type. They're far too choosy for that sort of nonsense. The only time they watch TV (because, remember, they're Very Busy People with Very Important Lives) is when a critically acclaimed box-set becomes available – recommended by someone they met at a dinner party who took great pride in the fact they'd never watched Coronation Street. And the second lot? Category two is the “it's not like it was in the old days” brigade. I'm marginally less annoyed by this bunch, simply because they’re inevitably older and their memories may be playing up. But they’re still talking out of their backsides. They'll bang on about Morecambe and Wise, Only Fools And Horses etc, but do they honestly believe the Christmas TV of decades past was all of that standard? It wasn’t. Christmas TV in the 70s and 80s meant dross such as Jim’ll Fix It (yes, exactly), Terry And June, The Paul Daniels Magic Show, Des O'Connor Tonight and even, at prime-time on Christmas Day 1975, a generous dollop of racist sitcom Love Thy Neighbour. The only reason people still bang on about Morecambe and Wise etc. is that they were the exception. Christmas TV back then was mostly dire. And most of it today is pretty good. Far better dramas, far more original ideas, far more factual stuff and a far greater range of comedy and light entertainment. Sure, there are some shows you’d rather sip battery acid than watch. But that’ll always be the case. My point is, we’re spoilt for choice these days when it comes to mainstream Christmas TV, both quality and quantity-wise. My advice to the moaners? Ditch the snobbery and try it. You never know, you might actually enjoy it. Not that you’ll ever admit that. Bill Bailey – Limboland Brighton Centre, 3 December 2015, ★★★★★ Bill Bailey is still capable of surprising himself. He repeatedly returns to the idea that the entire audience of the sold-out Brighton Centre are actually Dutch, wiping his face to hide his own hysterical laughter as audience members respond in the appropriate accent. Limboland offers the surreal verbal flights of fancy and musical interludes audiences expect from Bailey, along with more personal stories like the Arctic holiday gone wrong where his in-laws almost die, and irascible grumpy-old-man commentary on politics and One Direction. Yet while a Moby parody seems dated, his dub-reggae Downton Abbey remix ends the show in triumph. Rosie Clarke Do You Hear The Rainbow Sing: Rainbow Chorus St George’s Church, Kemp Town, 5 December 2015 ★★★★★ In festive mood, I hoped that Rainbow Chorus would live up to their reputation and the promise of their performance a few days earlier at the World Aids Day concert. I was not to be disappointed. The first half was given over to seasonal merriment with an excellent selection of seasonal music to warm even Scrooge’s heart. Pop classics and classic carols in excellent arrangements sat side by side. Break-out groups tackled some of the songs with great success and the audience were even encouraged to join in “A long as you sing in tune”! Which some of us did – heartily. The first half highlight was a stunning arrangement of The Twelve Days Of Christmas which combined musical dexterity with humour to great effect. In the second half we were treated to a selection from the musical Les Misérables and this they delivered with rousing power, moving delicacy and style. It was an ambitious choice but one that they certainly pulled off. It also gave voice to some terrific solos from members of the choir. It was good to hear these songs performed so well. The Rainbow Chorus, a group of un-auditioned people who love to sing, triumphs for three very good reasons; passion, hard work and a musical director of talent and vision, Aneesa Chaudhry, who drives them on to ever greater heights each year. Andrew Kay The Tiger Lilies – Lulu Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 30 November 2015, ★★★★★ The dark comic theatre of the Tiger Lilies turned its twisted gaze on the tale of Lulu, a tragic odyssey of a girl’s life, moving through child prostitution, death and extortion at the hands of the men of London and Paris. More dark in its telling than comic in the first half, with Lulu herself barely a line-sketch in comparison to the development of her male tormentors – also perversely portrayed on occasion as the victims of her circumstance – this was beautifully staged. The second half of the performance saw the accompanying ‘Lulu’ dancer come into her own with an epic pairing with the inspired set and lighting arrangement. The Tiger Lilies themselves – excellent musicians and performers as always – were compelling storytellers, taking us from the sharp clean lines of the Concert Hall to the depths of depravity with aplomb. Chas & Dave – Yup yup yup rabbit bunny jabber an you Adam & Eve it? The rockney duo show no signs of packing it in; their blend of memorable songs, music-hall humour, and rock'n'roll still hits the mark like no other. In a career spanning 40 years, Chas & Dave are without doubt one of Britain’s longest running and best loved acts, their appeal encompassing the widest age range imaginable. Partly thanks to their recent appearances at festivals such as Glastonbury and Bestival, Chas Hodges' and Dave Peacock's inimitable music is again in vogue, despite its decidedly retro flavours. Bursting onto the music scene in the 70s, they recorded exceptionally witty songs performed with a strong affection for all things English. In the tradition of The Kinks and the Small Faces and around the same time as Ian Dury and Squeeze, they wrote songs that spoke about

C

life in London, whilst musically they mixed up pub sing-a-longs, music-hall humour, boogie woogie piano and pre-Beatles rock'n'roll. With hits like Gertcha, Rabbit, The Sideboard Song and Ain't No Pleasing You, they appeared regularly on Top of the Pops and even had their own TV show for a while, set in, of course, and East End pub... They didn't just come out of the blue, or were a novelty act. Chas had worked with the legendary

producer Joe Meek, backed Jerry Lee Lewis, played with Mike Berry and the Outlaws, along with Ritchie Blackmore, and also the highly respected Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers where he first worked with future Chas & Dave drummer Mick Burt. He then joined Albert Lee’s cult band Heads Hands and Feet before playing with Dave and Albert in Black Claw. Dave had been equally active, including spells with The Tumbleweeds, Mick Greenwood, Jerry Donahue, and then Black Claw, prior to the pair coming together as Chas & Dave in 1972. In 2013, they went back to their skiffle and blues roots for their first studio album since 1995, That's What Happens, managing to make number 25 in the album charts. It completed the circle for this duo, a demonstration that they are a first class act. Concorde 2, Mon 28 Dec, 7pm, £23.50

That aside, they’re in a scrape and he really needs her to recognise him. Come on, River!
