reats. That’s what get us through the winter months. It’s why we start collecting holiday brochures and feel the absence of sugared fruit in January fasts. Treats can be big or small, and we’re worth every one of them – just we’re also not worth being crippled by an over-indulgent overdraft at the end of January, so it’s worth seeking out the big and the small to keep the bank manager happy. My big treat of January was going to The Grand for tea with my mother. We do it every year that we’re not together on Christmas Day. It’s a brilliant stepping stone towards February, and beautiful bespoke luxury that leaves me dopeyhappy on camomile tea and raspberry tart. There’s something gloriously decadent about the ceremony of cutting open a scone and slathering on cream and jam. Pouring from a silver tea pot with all of the pomp of a tea strainer perched nicely over the rim of a beautiful tea cup. It’s just plain lush. Smaller treats have seen me have a bash at poker – and with

Something new, something different, ‘round a pal’s house where opening a big bag of crisps ups the game and takes us into a shared comfortzone of crumbs on the baize. Get in. In the spirit of utterly enjoying the Rocky Horror Show at the Theatre Royal Brighton last month, I’m having a small screening in my living room for friends who have never seen the film. I know! I’ve got my Mickey Mouse ears and PJs all ready. And custom pizzas made round the corner at Sainsbury’s. Treats. They don’t have to cost the Earth, and sometimes they can mean the world.

In Lancashire we find out more about an initiative to help the lives of dementia sufferers with a singing group. Apparently it helps to relax and improve the memory and cognition of those taking part, as well as being that liberating fun thing most of us like to do anyway. What a lovely way to bring people together. In Wolverhampton a new simple and neat invention is helping those sleeping rough with ingenious cardboard beds; in Cardiff the serving and creating of delicious prison food is not only preparing to make your mouth water, but also serving up some serious skills to improve the lives and future job prospects of those on the inside; and in Leeds? In Leeds it’s time to have a chat with a synchronised swimmer and explore the folklore of mermaids the city possesses. THE JIGGLING JAPANESE LADY have always been a fidget, as a kid I had the most extraordinary ability to pick up things with my toes. Sadly this somewhat useless gift is long gone as with age my toes seem to now function as a unitary authority in one single motion. I am delighted to say though that my nephew seems to have inherited that toe wiggling gene and is now the butt of all the family’s prehensile jokes. Knowing that I am a fidget means that I have developed the ability not to do so, a vital skill for someone who spends a lot of time sat next to strangers in theatres or on trains or planes. Anyone who attends the theatre will know that I will sit still from start to finish and will also know that I am pretty intolerant of seat shifters and whisperers. Crisp eaters drive me crazy – but that’s another story. A group of friends and I recently flew to Nice for the day. The reason, to surprise a friend on her birthday. It was a reasonably priced flight, an early start and of course a late finish but it was well worth the effort to be with her on this special day and we all enjoyed a walk in the mediterranean winter sun, a delicious meal and a few glasses of wine to make the wheels of celebration run smoothly. By six thirty the sun had disappeared over the sea and it was time for us to board the local bus back to the airport, check in and wait. Nice airport is small and there was little there to keep us entertained during the long wait for our flight to be called – and airport lounge seats are never comfortable. But finally we were called and the slow process of boarding began. I waited in my seat until I could see that there were only two or three people in the queue, and then I joined in. After

for the entire time we sat waiting to push back from the airport, taxi to the runway, take off, fly and then touch down and taxi into the hard stand at Gatwick. The jiggling started with a search for her things, this took some time and was entirely useless as she never settled for long enough to listen to her iPad or read her magazine. Once all her bits were in place she had to then consult with her friend in the row in front. This involved her swinging her whole body through 180 degrees meaning that her tiny jiggling feet were virtually in my lap. Next came the air steward’s attempt to sell us stuff we neither need nor want. This required further consultation with the friend followed by a search for a purse. Purchases made, the jiggling Japanese lady then clearly started to worry about deep vein thrombosis. This manifested itself by serious bodily abuse. She clenched her fists tight and started to pound the muscles in her legs with a ferocity that was quite terrifying. This process went on intermittently for the rest of the flight, only punctuated by scrambling around to keep the blanket that she was using for added warmth, in a more than adequately heated cabin, in place. Of course with all the jiggling and leg punching it kept sliding off and landing on the floor, which in turn meant undoing her safety belt and reaching down. It was 90 minutes of pure hell, 90 minutes of much needed sleep lost. When finally we landed she was first up and first to open the overhead locker, but being tiny she did not see that her spectacle case had fallen out and was lodged out of sight. I saw it of course and being a gentleman smiled and retrieved it for her. Big mistake! Her profuse but grateful thanks caused even more of the damned jiggling.

all, the seats were allocated so I knew I had a place to sit. What a place! To my right a gentleman of a similar age to me read quietly. To the right the jiggling Japanese lady. I know, it sounds like the title of one of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes novels, but it could not be more appropriate. I completely understand that when taking your seat on a plane it is necessary to make yourself comfortable, find your book, specs, electronic device... This should take no more than a few minutes, but not for the jiggling Japanese lady. No, for her this was a mammoth task that lasted channel 159 or at thelatest.tv

THE UNDATEABLES

ast week I watched The Undateables for the first time. Now, why did I decide to set my Sky+ all of a sudden to record a show I've never bothered to watch before in my life? The trailer, basically. It looked like a particularly awkward episode featuring particularly awkward people. So in the interest of 'entertainment' I thought I'd give it a whirl. The thing with this show is that you tune into it with a sort of smirking fascination; but then actually you realise that it's the type of programming that Channel 4 does very well – almost raising awareness through light factual entertainment. There was James, to begin with – a totally harmless, sweet student, clearly highly intelligent yet romantically catastrophic. James was looking for a girlfriend. So Channel 4 sends him off on a date with Chloe, a woman with Asperger's (the same social condition he suffers from) whom he takes to afternoon tea. He gives her a rose and tells her that his mother helped him to pick out his outfit. Chloe doesn't seem fussed (probably because of the mother thing!) but by the end of the episode James is cooking her dinner at his place. He gets around too – squeezing in a date with The British Susanna in between (and taking notes with him to public have remind himself not to talk fallen for this about politics lest he comes athletic rugby across dull as well as player awkward). But, these people are anything but dull. I have been on duller dates than some of the ones portrayed on the show. I have dated (which means I have continued to go out with) duller people than this lot. There was an endearing story about Tammy, who had horribly lost some of her face to meningitis and was awaiting reconstructive surgery. It was actually very tragic, but the man she dated (whose confidence issues stemmed from the fact that he is bald and wears glasses) saw right past this and straight into her soul. Again, I have had first dates where I've left feeling worse about myself than this. Then there was Tom, the hunky, athletic rugby player. "Why is HE on this show?" you might find yourself screaming at the TV. Again, Asperger's and an added tick thrown in for good measure. The lesson here wasn't that those things don't matter if you're tall, blonde and handsome; it was about how Tom lacked any confidence whatsoever. The fact that the British public have seemingly fallen for this man and would happily throw themselves at him regardless of any evident medical condition is irrelevant – possibly because Tom might be terrified about touching you. Tom, I'd say, was the least confident of all three of these “undateables”. Normally I'll write a column erring on the cattier side of TV commentary, but I'll save that for shows such as First Dates, where these people don't really seem to help themselves, despite not necessarily having a condition per se. But The Undateables is just so damn cute that I simply can't. Nor would I want to. Andrew Bullock is a producer, presenter and writer. You can read more at www.drewjbullock.wordpress.com

Dr Caroline Oprandi keeping you up to date with science & technology at PACA ext term the pupils will be working on their individual STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths) projects. A project-based curriculum is something that I have long conversations about, with my husband Paolo. Paolo completed a Doctorate in Education recently at the University of Sussex and has set out his opinion on this topic below. “Children spend many hours at school at great expense in their most formative years, but we often miss the opportunity to ensure they meet their potential. In the current model of education children do not learn what they value or to value the skills they have. Many of them start to believe they are bad at subjects simply because they were not motivated to learn key concepts when they are taught it. Consequently many of our children’s strengths are not uncovered or are overlooked by the Children’s time they have left strengths are school and a great opportunity is lost. not uncovered by “In order to rectify the time they this I propose we take have left school a project-based approach to our school curricula. There are four key differences in this approach from traditional education I wish to highlight.

e’ve just come across the work of JanaNicole, and we can’t wait to share! Her art offers memories in mixed media: upcycled materials evoking a myriad of emotions that range from the spiritual to the comical, the classically familiar to the downright bizarre. She was raised in the desert of Southern California, among the backdrop of social and political change of the late 1960s, and trained as an artist at the California University of Northridge, then furthering her studies at The American College, London, during the mid-eighties. Now resident in the UK, JanaNicole exhibits her work regularly in and around London and the South East as well as in her native Palm Springs. Her A-Z series was brings to the fore a cacophony of emotions that draw audiences into a familiar and welcoming place that allows them to focus undisturbed on her works and wallow in their own personal memories. With her ‘Cereals’ you can hear the crinkle of the bag that holds the toy and the ‘Snap, Crackle and Pop’ from the cereal it is concealed within. With ‘Games’ you can imagine the clicking of the mousetrap falling to the board and the clacking of the Lido bubble You’ll find as the dice fly within the yourself dome. You’ll find yourself remembering remembering rainy days and holidays, popcorn and toffee rainy days and apples, projectors and train holidays sets. JanaNicole’s style is contemporary yet retro, simple yet sophisticated, innocent yet divisive. Personal messages abound among the upcycled chaos that affronts you with her works as you enter a world that look immediately familiar, and yet on closer inspection provides much more meaningful imagery to explore. JanaNicole will be one of the artists featuring in our new publication Art in Brighton 2016 and has an upcoming solo show at the Corridor Gallery this year. In a project-based curriculum: 1. Students are required to relate subject content taught by the teacher to a specialism of their own 2. They present their specialism to their peers, relating it to the subject content taught by the teachers 3. They discuss, challenge and peer review other students’ work 4. They keep a portfolio of work including an assessment piece, class exercises, a journal of their learning experiences and peer interactions that they will ultimately be assessed on

“The peer engagement expected in this model gives students a genuine interest in each other’s work. Interaction between peers develops a greater discernment and criticality about the subject topics than tutor to student interaction. The increased ownership children feel combined with the opportunities for peer interaction motivates the students to be resourceful and inquisitive about the subject. Finland has already started a move towards introducing a project-based, “phenomenon learning” curriculum. Hopefully we will too in the UK, but please feel free to challenge these ideas.” I’m really looking forward to the challenges of 2016. It was great to recently have met with the Director of Teaching and Learning Research from the University of Sussex, Professor Gillian HampdenThompson and tell her about everything we had achieved in this last year. Hopefully, besides winning prizes and competitions at the STEM centre; we can also start to have an impact on educational policy. ANDREW KAY DINES OUT

LEAVE THE NAMES OF OUR MONTHS ALONE re you as tired as I am of the constant fiddling with the names of months in order to promote some new and supposedly worthy campaign. I wholeheartedly approve of Movember which, forgive me if I am wrong, was the first to do this and did and does it well. It’s not easy for me to really join in as the ‘tache is a pretty permanent fixture on I am usually the kay gob, but I admire inspired by what they do and have in past years found ways to support recipe books this worthy cause. The rest rather than a are bandwagoning in a big slave to them way and few of the adaptations of the names of months work – Veganuary? Sorry, not for me, not that I have anything against people choosing to be vegan, just the ugly nature of the non-word veganuary. This month I have been less visible of the restaurant scene, not because I am cutting back but because I am really getting into cooking at home once again. Some of you will have scene my series Cook It! on Latest TV (and if you have not then I want to see a note from your mothers and fathers). Thirteen episodes in total of home cooking that strove to empower even the most nervous of cooks to feel empowered in their own kitchens. I’m now working on series two which will focus on simple ideas for a variety of kinds of culinary home entertaining, from simple mid-week suppers with friends to celebration parties for up to 20 people. I’m loving the whole process, digging out my old books, notes from parties that I have cooked and re-reading some of my favourite food writers. As you might imagine I have quite a collection of food books, recipes yes but also food philosophy. I have my favourites too. Few beat the Yorkshire TV Farmhouse Kitchen series for easily achieved classics, mine are so well used that you could boil the pages and make a hearty stock. New on the shelf right now are two new books that I am pondering with interest. With the still popular cult of street food, The Street Food Cook Book is an interesting volume. Fo me it is somewhat over designed, too many colours make the ingredients lists and methods on some pages too hard to read, not ideal when the purpose of a cook book should be ease of use in your kitchen. The recipes however are interesting and there are plenty of insights into how to make some delicious and popular dishes. The whole is heavily illustrated with good photography – but to what end? I would much rather have seen clearer design. My edition is a Northern one and features street food vendors from what you softy southerners call “Oop North” and as such it might prove more valuable as a guide book. Meze Publishing £10

Left Crab & Cucumber, Right American Pancakes, both from Blood Sweat & Beers

Blood Sweat And Beers, from the same publishers, is far more to my liking. It is better designed with clear ingredient lists and readable methods, it charts the work of the Sheffield based Milestone Group and it really makes me want to visit. Matt Bigland, Stacey Sherwood and Luke French describe their food ethos, methods and dishes from shopping to plate in a clean and appealing manner. I am usually inspired by recipe books rather than a slave to them but there are dishes in here that I will certainly be trying in the very near future. Good design, clear images of the dishes and appealing recipes make this volume stand way above the other. Meze Publishing £15 Finally this week I raise my hands and confess to something that I would have once though a crime. I have succumbed to tea bags. All my life I have been an exponent of using loose leaf teas and a teapot. I stand by this too, a properly made pot of tea is unbeatable. I do though live alone and a pot of tea is often too much. When a tin of Williamson Tea arrived on my desk I was somewhat dismayed to find that it was in bags. Needless to say I gave them a try and I have to say that not only is the tea, a classic blend, delicious it is also very convenient and less wasteful – in fact I am sipping a mug of this fine brew right now. I like their ethics too, complete bush to cup transparency from a company that goes back to 1869 is impressive and I will certainly be trying more of their blends in the very near future. DIVINELY DECADENT Noël Coward’s hilarious masterpiece Private Lives comes to Theatre Royal Brighton ne of the highlights of Theatre Royal Brighton’s drama programme this Season will be a major revival of Noël Coward’s Private Lives. This masterpiece of British comedy will visit Theatre Royal Brighton in February as part of a UK tour. The production stars stage and screen stars Tom Chambers (Strictly Come Dancing) as the loveable and charming Elyot and Laura Rogers (Tipping The Velvet) as the unconventional and vivacious Amanda, alongside Charlotte Ritchie (Call The Midwife) as Sybil and Richard Teverson (Downton Abbey) as Victor. This glittering production of one of the greatest plays of all time is directed by Tom Attenborough, with designs by Lucy Osborne, lighting by Oliver Fenwick and sound by Gregory Clarke. Private Lives is the tale of two warring exlovers who unexpectedly meet while on their

luxury honeymoons with their new partners. A masterpiece of 1930s high comedy, Private Lives is a sophisticated evening of acutely sharp and unashamed humour. Noël Coward was one of the UK’s most prolific and popular writers, Noël Coward’s plays include Hay Fever, Design For Living, Present Laughter, Relative Values, Fallen Angels and Blithe Spirit. His screenwriting credits include In Which We Serve (which he also co-directed) and Brief Encounter. Advanced sales for this witty and elegant comedy are extremely strong, so book now to avoid disappointment. How did you know you wanted to become a magician At school I had a hard time, I was small, I'm not the biggest now. I was an easy target. My grandad was always performing magic tricks and stuff at local bars, one day he saw me getting pushed into a wheelie bin and rolled down a hill by bullies. They would take me to the top and push me down. They did it for two weeks straight so I had cuts and bruises all the time. One night he taught me this technique to stop them lifting me off the ground – they couldn't move me. I couldn't believe it. That was the first time I did magic, and it wasn't to perform it was to protect myself. After that they spread rumours around the school that I was a demon child, and had super powers. Grandpa taught me other tricks, and said if they ever threaten to break your bones show them this... (at this point Dynamo bends his little finger into a circle, fascinating and weird at the same time) so I'd show them and say, “do your worst guys, I can handle pain”. Magic was more like a defence mechanism. I dropped out of college and my grandparents had lots of Golden Retrievers and we would travel around the world doing the Pedigree Chum adverts, it was crazy, in the day we would travel in this big Winnebago all over America and places, and in the evening I would perform magic at the dog show after parties. We went to New Orleans and Vegas and, I saw street performers and acts like David Copperfield. It really opened my eyes to the fact I could actually do this for a living, and it’s worked out okay. How many hours a day do you need to train? For this tour I get up and train from 8am then I go to the venue and do on stage rehearsals, and more training at 6pm. I have physio and vocal training to be ready for the performance. But even sitting watching TV I will have a pack of cards in my hand, it’s like second nature. For the tour though it was a solid six weeks from 8 in the morning till 11 at night, its been pretty full on. Magician or Illusionist? What's the difference, which are you? I'm Dynamo, haha. I try to create my own thing. If you were to try and define an illusionist it would be watch on

DYNAMITE! DYNAMO – A DYNAMIC BUNDLE OF MAGIC & MYSTERY the Vegas kind with the big boxes, show girls, glitz and glamour, it’s really cool but not my style. A magician is someone who can make you suspend your disbelief, show you something that appears to be real, but is physically not possible.

created the magic ideas they used in Harry Potter movies. The team we have brought together is my dream team. I've also been lucky enough to have people like David Copperfield call me up to give advice and support.

Why do the arena tour? Doing a stage show three years ago would’ve been the last thing on my mind, its not me. The first couple I was petrified, but I'm really starting to enjoy it now and getting more comfortable. I didn't want to perform in a ‘stage school’ way, I'm not your typical ‘jazz hands’ kind of person, and my friends would crucify me if I did, so I need to keep it authentic, its been a learning curve for me.

You do a variety of things from street performing to walking on water, what do you prefer? I love interacting with people, so it comes down to the spectators and I adapt to whoever I meet. On stage it’s not as improvised as I would like, it has to have a beginning, middle and end. Hopefully I have still managed to involve the crowds and there are elements that involve every single member of the crowd, it’s trying to keep the intimacy and manage to put it on a grand scale.

Do you devise your own tricks or work with an illusion developer? With the street magic I work with other magicians and friends. Sometimes they look at me like I'm insane. For this show I have had to work with many professionals. I have the Director of Matilda, a guy from New York called Thomas Caruso. I'd heard so many amazing things about him in the theatre. I've worked with an amazing vocal coach Barbara Houseman, she worked with Daniel Radcliffe and people like that, I wanted people to be able to understand me but without losing my accent. I also found a great guy, Paul Kieve. He channel 159 or at thelatest.tv

It’s clear from your book that it’s not just about being good at magic, you had to be good at blagging too. I believe talent can only get you so far, hard work will always trump talent. I'm fortunate to believe I have talent in what I do, I'm confident in my skills as a magician, my skills as a performer are something I have had to really work on, especially for this tour. But the blagging skills... in a way, I wouldn't be in this position without them. It took me ten years of blagging to get my TV show

'Magician Impossible' made but Watch totally got behind me. The celebrity guests on my TV shows, a lot of that was me blagging my way to their shows, finding their security, amazing them with tricks, getting taken to the manager, then to their dancers, amazing them, spending as much time as I could with them haha, before then eventually getting taken to the main act and then blowing their minds with magic and saying “oh by the way I've got a TV show I'm making and I'd love to have you on it”. Thankfully a lot of them said “yeah ok”. One of the toughest blags was when I met Coldplay. Many years ago when they did the X&Y album, I blagged my way into Coco in Camden where they were doing press. I ended up doing magic to this lady, and she said, “you must come and show my son” so I was like “oh ok”, she started shouting “Christopher Christopher”– her son was Chris Martin. I did a few tricks and he was mesmerised so he called Gwyneth Paltrow and the rest of the band. I was a bit cheeky and asked if I could film it for my website. Chris said if I made it big and got my own TV show they would come on it. When I got my own show he said they couldn’t make it for the first three series’. I didn't bother asking for four but they heard it was my last and got in touch with me and came on the show. Does it ever go wrong and if it does what do you do? Most of what I do is improvised, people don't actually know what's meant to happen, so in my head if I think something's not going to plan, I can twist it and turn it and make it into something that is still magical, it might be a bit different to what I intended but the crowd don't know that! Other than your grandpa, if you could name one person that has influenced you in your profession who would it be? Two people. The legendary David Copperfield, I think he is one of the greatest magicians to have ever lived, his legacy is phenomenal. And David Berglas, a British magician, not many people have heard of him, years ago he was the man! Dynamo Live Tour Brighton Centre 27-31 January 0844 847 1515 brightoncentre.co.uk

COMMUTABLE WILL HARRIS

ENTERTAINMENT JOE FULLER

The downside of living in a desirable destination

Under-25 year olds can go free to see the Royal College of Music Wind Ensemble

hen you spend a large part of your working week riding the rails between Brighton and London, the last thing you want to do when the weekend rolls around is accommodate a visit from friends or family. Unfortunately, Brighton being one of the UK’s foremost tourist destinations, those of us who live here don’t always have a say in the matter. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy being social, and I like playing the host even more so. It gives me an excuse to buy nice wines, plus it’s generally the only time I can ever get Jack to help with the cleaning. But after five days of commuting, launching straight into the pressures of entertaining with no downtime in between can be challenging. On one hand, you want your guests to have a good time, and enjoy the full Brighton experience. On the other, you’d quite like them to clear off so you can put your sofabed to a more self-centred use, like sleeping for 36 hours straight without anyone once suggesting a trip round the Royal Pavilion. This antisocial impulse may be appealing, but it’s not without its disadvantages. At a time when a commuter’s life can feel increasingly

am a fan of anything slightly different to mix up the classical soundworld a bit and increase the sense of variety in concerts. Generally consisting of a combination of horns, bassoons, oboe and clarinet, the sound of a wind ensemble fits the bill by being alliteratively bombastic and brassy. The striking, lusty sound and bold volume of wind instruments might appeal more to younger listeners too. This performance is part of the Dome's Coffee Concert series, in association with Strings Attached, which takes part in the brilliant CAVATINA scheme. CAVATINA subsidises the attendance of young people aged 8 to 25 inclusive in chamber music concerts around the country. The number of free tickets is limited so you need to request them in person at the Dome's ticket office at 29 New Road, Brighton. The varied programme opens with Leoš Janáček's 'Mládí' (Youth) sextet, a more strange, modern piece than the rest being performed. Janáček saw the youth aspect of the piece as relating to childhood memories, which is musically reflected in occasional, fond plaintive moments of recollection, while the third movement recalls a tune the composer heard as a boy. The wind ensemble A culturally will then take on Beethoven's Piano bracing, Sonata no. 8, arranged melodic and by Robin O'Neill. Known unique Sunday as the 'Pathetique' morning sonata, it is one of Beethoven's most popular compositions and helped create a reputation for him as a composer rather than just a superb pianist. It will be interesting to see how Beethoven's brisk, legato style (where notes run smoothly into each other) will be transposed for wind and I can't wait to hear how it all comes together. Richard Strauss' Serenade in E-Flat Major, Op. 7 is a delightful one movement piece, sounding more grounded than his later experiments. As Chris Darwin writes in his programme notes however, “Strauss relishes the range of timbres that different combinations of the instruments can produce: each phrase in the first 24 bars uses a different set of instruments before they all combine for the first time at bar 24”. Mozart's Serenade No. 12 in C Minor, K. 388 will end the concert, which was written in a time when a wind band was generally used as background music for socialising. The piece is technically dazzling but can be enjoyed on many levels and leads to a glorious major crescendo. The format at coffee concerts is informal and relaxed; you often get the chance to meet performers, and cakes and beverages are available at the interval and before the show. If you want to try something new, this should be a culturally bracing, melodic and unique way to spend a Sunday morning. Royal College of Music Wind Ensemble, Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome, Sunday 24th January, 11am, £16-£18.50, free for 8 to 25 year olds inclusive (read more above), 01273 709709 and www.brightondome.org

A commuter’s life is increasingly dominated by the spheres of ‘Office’ and ‘Train’

dominated by the spheres of ‘Office’ and ‘Train’, the last thing anyone would be advised to do is to limit the one marked ‘Friends’. So you prop your eyes open with matchsticks (or whatever the 21st century equivalent is, now that no one smokes cigarettes or builds campfires anymore) and force yourself to struggle through it, smiling, joking and wishing you were dead. Or at the very least, asleep. Case in point. My first week back at work after the Christmas break was a real slog, half caused by the long nights and half by the frequent disappointment that I was in an office rather than in my pyjamas eating Quality Street with abandon. What I needed as I finally dragged myself to the end of the week was a restful weekend, but what I got instead was two days playing tour guide for a group of Jack’s friends who had decided to sweep away their January blues with an impromptu trip to the seaside. Which is not to say it wasn’t fun, as we scampered from bar to restaurant to the penny slots on the pier. But behind it all was the knowledge that, come Monday morning, my train to St Pancras would be waiting for me at the same time as always, and that – rather than restoring my energy levels to normal – the end of the weekend would leave me more tired than when it began. There was one upside though. As they left, one of Jack’s friends remarked he’d had such a good time that how could he not return the favour by inviting us to stay with him in Bath the following weekend. “You don’t have to come if you don’t want to,” Jack said to me later. “Do you mind if I go?” I can honestly say that I don’t. watch on

WOMEN OF TROY

Once again New Venture Theatre take on a mammoth task with this huge and exacting production righton and Hove, and for that matter most of East and West Sussex, is well served when it comes to professional theatre – from Chichester through Worthing to Eastbourne and Hastings in the east and north to Crawley, we are treated to a wide range of shows of all kinds, from popular commercial theatre, to serious drama and classics, not to mention comedy one nighters and pop and classical events. Here in the city though this is added to by a thriving fringe theatre scene ranging from professional to what might once might have been called amateur. In my experience there is little need to use the word amateur with its less than professional connotations as on the whole the standards are very high. This must in part be due to the number of excellent theatre practitioners that have always chosen to make Brighton their home, but also to a discerning audience who would perhaps never settle for anything less. One such venue is the New Venture Theatre, an organisation undaunted by tackling some of the most difficult of works of both modern and classical repertoire and always seeming to pull their productionss off to critical acclaim. Their next production is Women of Troy. In Troy, the war is over and the city is burning. The Gods shift their allegiances. The city’s once rich and powerful women have been herded together to await their fates at the hands of the victorious Greeks. Who can steer that fate? Hecuba, once queen, has lost everything. Her only remaining child – Cassandra – is running through the city with burning torches, a crazed prophetess. Helen, the catalyst, awaits judgement from the husband she left, friendless in both camps. The luckless Talthybius, Greek messenger, must close his heart to the women whose destiny he comes to tell, even when the orders he bring sicken him. Director Ella Turk-Thompson says: “Women of Troy is something I have approached with equal joy and trepidation. There are certain challenges: A huge cast, many

Steve Wilson – Porcupine Tree man talks to Jeff Hemmings ou most likely would have not have heard of Steve Wilson, but he’s a hugely successful musician, with his band Porcupine Tree, and as a solo artist. He's also a renowned producer, and remixer. “When I walk around London, I will very rarely get recognised. Not that I have a massive fanbase, but if I walk around almost any other city usually somebody will recognise me. They say you are prophet without honour in your own country. It's been a constant struggle to have some kind of profile in the UK mainstream,” says Steve. Not that should unduly bother him, because, like

Y

he indicates, he has had enormous success around the globe, firstly with his Pink Floyd inspired psychedelic and progressive rock via Porcupine Tree, and now as a solo artist. Not so much for record sales, of which there have been a few, but as a live act, often playing huge arenas, where every attention is made: “It is a genuinely multimedia experience,” he says about the live shows.”I do have world class musicians with me, and I have beautifully produced animations and live action films. I have quadrophonic sound, so there is a very immersive quality to the way the music comes across. I am a great believer in that the moment a member of the audience walks through the door to the moment they leave you have a opportunity to really put them in your world.” With Porcupine Tree on extended hiatus, Wilson has

released a stream of conceptbased albums, the last one Hand. Cannot. Erase revolving around ideas of isolation and paranoia. “For me it's analogous to making a movie. I’m not interested in making ten pop songs... I want to tell a story; through the lyrics and the music, too. Hand. Cannot. Erase was inspired by a woman called Joyce Carol Vincent who was found dead in her apartment in North London, and her body lay undiscovered for over two years. She was a young, attractive, popular young woman. So, the idea that someone like that could disappear so completely from view, living in the heart of one of the biggest cities on Earth is extraordinary. And in-between you’ll find the improvising buzz well in play with seasoned performers Off The Cuff. They’re so generous they’ve even opened up the show to include other quality improvisation groups, namely The Wilsons and Blanket Fort. It’s an oasis of neverbefore-seen comedy with each show made up on the night using suggestions from the audience. So if you’re looking for reasons to be cheerful, look no further. PERVASIVE PRATTLING

Golem The Old Market, 6 January 2016, ★★★★★ 1927’s third show is a loose interpretation of Gustav Meyrink’s 1915 book, updated for the iPad generation through taking swipes at inbuilt obsolescence and consumerism’s obsession with trends. Their celebrated multimedia staging featured a vast visual backdrop of claymation and animation, with the five performers interacting through doors and other props. The actors were brilliant all-round, a lengthy rehearsal period clearly paying dividends in their mellifluous old-timey dialogue which was delivered with perfect, humorous diction. The live musical accompaniment of drums and keyboards was diverse and accomplished and the involving plot was well-written. The alarmingly relevant dystopia was expertly conjured, with poignant character development effectively conveying fraying relationships and the repression of individuality. The one small drawback was a slower second half that lost momentum but overall this unique production was a wonder to behold. Joe Fuller

hree whole weeks into this new year, and somewhat amazingly my get-vaguely-fitter regime is still more or less on track. "I'm off to the gym," I'm proudly announcing to my family on an almost daily basis. And it's true, that's exactly where I do go. It's a slight distortion of the truth, I'll admit, in that the gym also has a rather nice pool, and that's the only bit I tend to use. Oh, I'll occasionally do a stint on the cross-trainer – precariously propping up my iPhone on the display so I can simultaneously catch up with EastEnders and see if poor Stacey has been sectioned yet – but mostly I head straight for what's rather unpleasantly referred to as the wet area. Unsavoury name or not, I do like the wet area. My swimming may be clumsy and awkward but I exert enough graceless energy to feel it's doing me some good. Then it's a steam, a sauna and back to work. I'm not sure the steam room and sauna are of huge benefit to me, fitness-wise, but these are where I get to close my eyes for a few precious minutes and zone out. I love this bit. Except, that is, when I encounter what I call Gogglebox syndrome.

T

Inspired by the Channel 4 show of that name, this is the name I've given to that peculiar 21st century habit people have developed of not being able to shut the hell up, even for five minutes, no matter where they happen to be. Of feeling the constant need to prattle on, usually very loudly, Unsavoury about nothing of any name or consequence, oblivious to how irritating this is to not, I do like those around them. Of the wet area seemingly feeling threatened by the very idea of silence. Gogglebox has somehow made it acceptable for people to relentlessly spew out their banal, fatuous, witless opinions while sitting watching TV, much to the annoyance to us old-fashioned types who'd rather watch a programme properly and talk about it afterwards. And yes, these are the same mouthy numpties who'll sit and hold full-volume moronic conversations with one another in environments such as the steam room and sauna, where others have clearly come to chill out. Such is their lack of self-awareness that even if you jab your fingers very demonstrably in your ears, they fail to take the hint. Believe me, I've tried. Most health clubs welcome feedback, so here's mine. Put a sign on the door, politely telling customers: "If you've nothing worthwhile to say, which you almost certainly haven't, then kindly shut the hell up." Actually, I'm not sure I'd even bother with the "kindly". And while we're at it, I could suggest an even better word than "hell". Krater Comedy Komedia, 8 January 2016, ★★★★★ Better looking than your average stand-up comic and funny too. Jimmy McGhie’s youthful cynicism about public school, hypocritical hippies and trendy brunches taking over from traditional greasy breakfasts hit the spot with the crowd. Edgier humour followed from grumpy middle-aged man Carey Marx who shocked and entertained from start to finish. The final act was 26 year old Chris Turner, whose freestyle raps were smart and hilarious. Compere Stephen Grant’s cheeky banter was as good as the acts, it was a great Friday night out and a very happy way to start the new year. Elizabeth Hughes

London Gay Symphony Orchestra and Actually Gay Men’s Chorus Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 10 January 2016, ★★★★★ The first half of the programme saw the LGSO perform Saint-Saëns’ ‘Carnival of the Animals’ along with charismatic poetry from host Miss Jason (Jason Sutton), although it did disrupt the momentum a little. Poulenc’s ‘Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra’ was a highlight, when pianists Coady Green and Christopher Wayne Smith duelled with lyrical aplomb. The second half was more in the cabaret vein, with the AGMC performing some stirring, robust Gilbert & Sullivan, and also songs such as an emotional ‘I Won’t Send Roses’ performed by David Raven. The sense of adventure and mischief was refreshing, and the combination of orchestral and popular chorus songs ensured that there was something for everyone to enjoy. Joe Fuller 22

THURSDAY 21 Jericho ITV1, 9pm You know what’s a bummer in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1870s? Getting ill. It’s really not a good idea. Martha’s very green about the gills and there isn’t a doctor in sight, meaning that Johnny has to make a mega sacrifice before it’s too late. That’s why he’s looking all moody. Best to let him stew for a bit...

Date My Mum Channel 4, 10pm It worked for Sleepless In Seattle so why not for a heart-warming C4 documentary? Two single mums look for love online, with their kids in the driving seat on the selection process. Interviewing three potential suitors before selecting one to date their mum, what do kids look for in an ideal man?

Scorpion ITV2, 9pm Like an extension of a 90s teen high school comedy, the brainiacs have all the best quirks and the pretty girl really ‘gets’ them. Just need Freddie Prinze Jnr and it’s deja vu complete! Anyway, this lot also help the FBI save the world six times before breakfast – proper added value. Aren’t clever clogs grand!

MONDAY 25 Mary Berry’s Foolproof Cooking BBC2, 8.30pm Think you can only burn water and heat undercooked fish fingers? Do not worry – Mary Berry is sharing her foolproof recipes in this brand new series. She starts off with yummy salmon with herbs and red pepper... fine... and then moves on to lobster tails... say what?! Tasty.

Crashing Channel 4, 10pm The flatshare comedy in a disused hospital is having a feast of Irish curry care of resident chef Anthony. Spicy it certainly is as the meal descends into chaos. Fred introduces everyone to his new boyfriend Will, Lulu and Kate have a heart-to-heart, and Melody reveals her secret relationship with Colin.

Siblings BBC3, 10.30pm With siblings like this it’s interesting to see how the parents behave. Ta da! Hannah and Dan’s dad appears and organises a birthday party for himself, instantly raising Hannah’s suspicions. Turns out he’s got an announcement to make – he’s getting married. No comedy mileage there at all.
