atthew and Natalie Mellor are a Plenty Of Fish success story, who met online three years ago. They are now happily married with a beautiful sixmonth old daughter, SeriaSkye. Matt wanted a partner to enjoy scuba diving adventures with, so was impressed with scuba instructor Natalie’s underwater credentials! She explained: “I was travelling in Thailand at the time and as Matt had been there before, he advised me

on all the best places to go – the friend I was travelling with wasn't impressed with the amount of time I spent on my phone talking to him!” Their online dalliance continued for two months prior to the first date. Matt brought fluffy ball of fun, Amber the dog along to further his chances and also took Natalie to meet his mum. Latest gave them a bottle of fizz for sharing their story. ancing. I love dancing. I don’t do it often enough out in the world, but there’s always plenty of it going on in my kitchen and living room whenever I’ve got my housekeeping groove on. I did venture out for a boogie the other day though. I can’t say I’m a particularly good dancer, but I am an enthusiastic one. That sounds ominous, but I do try not to just be a bundle of flailing limbs knocking beverages off tables and other dancers akimbo. When we decided it was time to go I was shattered, but in a very good way. I used muscles that usually lie dormant even through a yoga class, and I used them with joy. I grinned at the DJ’s choices, I was amazed at incredible versions of familiar tracks only that special tribe of ‘disk jockey’ is ever privy to. And I thanked my friend for taking me out dancing. I love dancing. LATEST 7 | 5

y sunglasses aren’t working and the burger is unsettling my already fragile stomach. I didn’t get much sleep last night and while going outside seemed like a good idea at the time, lying in the Pavilion gardens on a Saturday with children running around seems inappropriate and my brain can’t cope with it. I blame last night. It is so unlike me but also like me, at least the me I am right now. My friend Peyton asked me around his and we didn’t get much sleep. Well we got about an hour but we had better things to do, like sleeping together. I started staying round his when we realised neither of us wanted a relationship but we still wanted each other. It made sense since we knew there was no future so we just decided to have fun. So after managing to get some sleep, this morning I was woken up by Greg calling me to ask me where I was. Lying in another man’s bed with only a sheet covering me, I completely forgot I had plans with the person I actually fancied – I could be going to Duke of York’s. I’ve always wanted to go to the cinema since I hear they put on arts films and the building looks cool outside. I also wouldn’t mind grabbing some popcorn and hanging out. It’s a shame since I could actually imagine being romantic with him rather than just getting drunk with Peyton. Greg and I shared things in common rather than just our attraction to each other but I’m too tired so I’m going to have to sit this one out. I mean, I couldn’t just go from one man’s bed to another man’s heart? Could I?

have always enjoyed eating out and, unlike many, I like to eat out alone. Dining alone offers two benefits. Firstly I can order what I like without fear of being reprimanded for being too greedy or indeed too extravagant. If I want the bloody lobster I have the bloody lobster! Secondly you can eavesdrop on neighboring diners. Okay, I know it's rude but hands up those of you who don't? I thought so, we all do it. Last night I dined alone at a favourite restaurant, The Chilli Pickle. It’s convenient for getting to the theatre for curtain up too. I ordered my usual delicious supper and relaxed with a beer. At a nearby table three people arrived and chatted until a waiter asked if they were ready to order. They were not and asked for more time. On his return he was faced with a barrage of questions. The menu in this particular restaurant is excellent and offers a wide variety of dining options, deals and the like. But for one diner this was not choice enough and she wanted to take bits from here and there to create her dinner. My heart wept for the poor waiter as he battled to fulfill her needy desires. The waiter was patient and unphased, he brought samples of two wines for them to choose from and accommodated the difficult diner’s requests with a dignified calm. I know that we are led to believe that the customer is always right, but to what extent? On this occasion I was more convinced that the customer is always right, even when they are wrong! Full marks to the excellent waiter too for not losing his temper.

S E O R E H E B N A WE C (OR VILLAINS) > Pick your team in Heroes vs Villains charity run

I

t’s that time of year again, when Brightonians around the city dust off their superhero or villain costumes and think about heading to the seafront for another epic battle between the good and evil! It can only be the Heroes Run vs Villains Run, in aid of Pass It On Africa. The concept is simple: On race day, the teams will line up against each other and go head to head in a straight race to the finish line. In both the 5km and the 10km race, the first team to reach 100 finishers will win the day. You don’t have to be an athlete to take part, so the event is a fantastic opportunity for all the family to get involved. As well as the 5k and 10k distances for the grown up Wonder Women and Lex Luthers among you, there is also the everpopular Kids 500m Dash plus a Youth Mile Race. Every runner will receive a medal and there will be prizes for the best costumes in all categories. Outfits can be shopbought or homemade, but it’s best to think of the practicalities of running in it before getting too carried away with the design! The teams are also going headtohead in fundraising for Pass It On Africa. Hero or Villain, one thing that everyone can agree on is the importance of their cause. Matt Lambert, Pass It On Africa cofounder explains: “In 2016 we aim to complete our three year development project at the Nyantonzi Primary School in Masindi, Uganda. The objective is to develop the school into a sustainable and wellperforming institution where all the children, girls and boys alike, receive a quality education in

a safe and secure environment. “Last year’s race raised £18,711 for Pass It On Africa, every penny of which went to the Nyantonzi School Project. The charity is run entirely voluntarily by a handful of friends, so the race entry fee covers the annual charity running costs plus the cost of the race itself. This is how 100% of fundraising can go straight to supporting education in Africa. “Pass It On Africa aim to raise £20,000 at this years race. To achieve this they are asking each runner to try and raise £20 sponsorship. If this is achieved, you will not only enable over 800 young people to achieve a quality primary education but you will also help them help themselves out of poverty.” So, whether you wish to save the day as a hero or ruin the day as a villain, sign up for a fun day out, and at the same time help put a smile on the face of a child in Africa. hen I had my first interview for Latest TV News, Tim Ridgway asked me what kind of stories I wanted to cover. I said that eventually, I'd like to be embedded in the Middle East as a war correspondent. So on my first day, I was sent out on my first big scoop, only to find out I was covering a "butterfly counting event". Hardly the preparation I was looking for. But like Mr Miyagi in The Karate Kid, he was teaching me a valuable lesson – that no reporter is above a story. Especially when it comes to local news. 18 months later and I've been enjoying my new role as a news producer and occasional anchor. What a privilege it is to produce the news, and what a challenge. To decide what goes in and what stays out, to guide reporters as they work, to determine how to present stories most effectively and to shape the way news will unfold. There’s an awful lot of detail and pressures that influence those decisions day to day. News production is challenging in ways I never imagined. I’ve learnt how to prioritise tasks, how to manage people efficiently and how to smash out a local theatre news script on a Tuesday. Of course there's the more outrageous challenge of trying to broadcast live news from a music bar on one of the busiest streets in Brighton. Some days we'll have a fourpiece Spanish band sound checking as the live news comes to a close. Other days a family of seagulls will come to roost on the roof our studio, screeching over the chat show.

atboy Slim has joined a campaign to save The Brighton Hippodrome. In its formative years the grade II listed building hosted the likes of Sammy Davies Jnr, Harry Houdini, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Spending its twilight years as a Bingo Hall, the theatre closed its doors for good in 2007. The Middle Street venue is now in desperate need of funding in order to return to its glory days. Following a guided hard hat tour, Brighton DJ Norman Cook was galvanised into publicising the Hippodrome’s plight: “My eyes have been opened very widely by what I saw inside. It's about three times bigger than I remember, ten times more beautiful and in about 50 times better repair than I was expecting. We want it to be in the right hands, for the right use – and to become part of Brighton again.” www.ourhippodrome.org.uk

will be honest from the get go and say that I am only occasionally tempted by the idea of a burger. They did not form a part of my childhood and have to be very good indeed to excite me. Few are very good with one or two notable exceptions here in Brighton that I have written about in the last two years. So when I was invited along to the launch of Stock Burger I accepted with trepidation. First impressions were good, what is not to love about a bar that champions local ales, beers and spirits. I started off an impressive espresso martini made with my favourite Blackdown Gin. It was the first of many excellent drinks that night... It was no big, come one come all celeb 'B' list affair, but a far more contained event with many of my foodie writer chums and a good representation of the suppliers that the restaurant, part of a new chain, have engaged with. Each made a short and informative speech before the main event, the food. I was invited to choose a main course and spotting a braised short rib, or Jacob's ladder, I was able to sidestep the burger. I need not have worried as fellow guests tucked into some pretty impressive ones. First though came an array of side dishes and starters, and they were good, better than good in fact and in particular the

chicken wings which were delicious, they were exceptional and I was in grave danger of peaking too soon as I scoffed them down. So finally that short rib. My word, what a treat, the best since a memorable short rib at the Michelin starred Curlew at Bodiam. Now that is praise indeed. It was everything a sweet cured beef rib should be, a sticky, unctuous, falling off the bone treat. A perfect blend of sweet and savoury. It was big too, and after my chicken wing fest I was sadly beaten. I was pretty beaten by the puds which I only payed lip service too, but my fellow guests were enthused and made light work of them. I liked Stock Burger, I liked the stylish and comfortable interior. It may be part of a growing chain but it has an individual look, and a fabulous position overlooking the sea. I liked too the fact that it works as both bar and restaurant and with their policy of great beers and cocktails it makes an attractive new option when meeting friends, especially as after a few drinks you can easily stay on and dine at prices that by modern standards seemed to be very easy on the wallet. I hope to go back soon, and maybe I will have one of those very impressive burgers. 137 Kings Road, Brighton, BN1 2JF 01273 828260 stockburgerco.com

CHICHESTER FESTIVAL

> Chichester Festival’s superb 2016 programme

F

estival 2016 marks Artistic Director Jonathan Church and Executive Director Alan Finch’s final season at Chichester Festival Theatre. Since taking over in 2005, they have produced over 100 productions including 24 new plays, winning over 40 awards and more than doubling audience numbers. The big summer musical for 2016 is a new stage version of the iconic Half A Sixpence: a completely fresh adaptation by Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey. The score by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe includes exhilarating songs from the original production. Cocreated by Cameron Mackintosh and directed by Rachel Kavanaugh, Half A Sixpence will feature Bryan Dick as the draper’s assistant who inherits a fortune and finds himself thrust into high society. Patricia Hodge plays Aunt Augusta in the season’s first musical, the world premiere of Travels with My Aunt, directed by Christopher Luscombe and based on Graham Greene’s celebrated novel. The question of power: who has it, and who wants it, echoes through both epic dramas and new plays. Hugh Bonneville returns to the stage in Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People as the brilliant Dr Stockmann, whose shocking scientific discovery pits him against commercial interests. Galsworthy’s Strife depicts a strike at the turn of the century, with Julian Glover as the resolute chairman of the board. Coming right uptodate is FRACKED! Or: Please Don’t Use The FWord, a new black comedy by political satirist Alistair Beaton, directed by Richard Wilson, with James Bolam and Anne Reid leading the cast. This House by 12 | LATEST 7

James Graham goes behind the scenes of the House of Commons in 1974. Joseph Fiennes returns to Chichester to play Lawrence of Arabia in Terence Rattigan’s Ross: an epic drama revealing the deeply conflicted man behind the heroic legend, directed by Adrian Noble. The devastating impact of war on two young First World War soldiers and their families is also the subject of Mark Hayhurst’s new play First Light, following his highly acclaimed play Taken at Midnight which transferred to the West End last year; it will be directed by Jonathan Munby. The Royal Shakespeare Company’s innovative pairing of two great romantic comedies, Love’s Labour’s Lost and Much Ado About Nothing, brings the season to a close. Edward Bennett leads a 22strong ensemble as Berowne and Benedick. An allocation of £8.50 tickets is available for 16 to 25 yearolds for all productions throughout Festival 2016. These are released one month before each production opens; sign up free at cft.org.uk/prologue. Members also have access to a range of exclusive events. And as the 2016 season is unveiled, other Chichester Festival productions are being enjoyed in London and around the world. Guys and Dolls continues its West End run and Young Chekhov transfers to the National Theatre in July. Goodnight Mister Tom tours the UK again until May; Michael Morpurgo’s Running Wild receives its London premiere at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in July; and Singin’ in the Rain tours South Africa and Australia. hit in the West End and on Broadway, End Of The Rainbow returns to Theatre Royal Brighton by popular demand. It's 1968 and Garland, a onceglittering star, is in London to make her explosive comeback. But off stage, holed up in her hotel room, Judy is battling with her young new fiancé, her devoted accompanist, and her destructive addictions. Will she be able to conquer her demons and reclaim her crown as one of history’s great musical icons? Featuring Garland’s most memorable songs The Man That Got Away, Come Rain Or Come Shine, The Trolley Song and of course Somewhere Over The Rainbow, End Of The

Rainbow is a fiercely funny and emotionally charged musical play filled with Garland’s legendary tenacity, razorsharp wit and onceinageneration voice. Lisa Maxwell plays Judy Garland. Lisa is an actress and television presenter, best known for her role as Samantha Nixon in ITV’s The Bill, and as a panelist on ITV’s Loose Women from 2009–2014. Other television credits include EastEnders, The Russ Abbot Show and The Lisa Maxwell Show. Theatre Royal Brighton, Tue 29 Mar – Sat 2 Apr, www.atgtickets.com/brighton 0844 871 7650 (bkg fees apply)

nternational bestselling author Peter James knows how to pen a great crime novel, the play based on his novella really hits the spot. The previous production didn't mesh but with this cast the play really comes to life. Firstly, they bring out the comedy of the story. This is a deadly farce with the twists of a great thriller. But it is the cast who bring the whole to life and in particular Jessie Wallace and Shane Ritchie. Wallace is compelling watching, milking every last word for full effect and using facial skills to enliven her superb performance. Ritchie is almost unrecognisable as the dull husband seeking comfort with a Croatian prostitute. He shows that there is far more to him, a solid performance that goes from comic to sinister with alarming ease. Theatre Royal Brighton, 7 March. Andrew Kay

he London based fourpiece have already achieved a tremendous amount in their short time together. From playing the John Peel Stage at Glastonbury, to touring with AltJ, and headlining various UK tours including a long sold out show at Brighton Dome, the rise of Wolf Alice from open mics to some of the biggest stages has been staggering. Coming to London to study, and bringing his acoustic guitar with him, guitarist Joff (Jonathon is his real name) soon ventured in to the open mic scene, where he met Ellie, and started the Wolf Alice project. “I came to do a degree in London, a B.Ed, integrated with a teaching training qualification, which I just managed to finish, thanks to a very considerate tutor of mine. It was just me and Ellie for a couple of years. I met her out and about at open mics, and we did that circuit for a while. But, it’s hard to get noticed at those kind of things, when you’re playing quieter music. We had no money really, all we had was acoustic guitars. “It got to the point where we thought it was getting a tiny bit tedious, doing the same circuit, not seeming to be noticed or whatever, so we decided to be a bit brattish, a bit louder, and make people listen to us. A friend of ours suggested Theo (bass) and Joel (drums). Neither of them could play drums or bass, they were both guitar players, so they had to pick it up on the fly. I think Joel had two rehearsals before we had a show. He was by no means a drummer at that point, but Joel is just one of those annoying people who can pick up anything and learn it.” It seems so simple, doesn't it? And perhaps, this DIY approach to getting it together and seeing what sticks, as well as bagful of great songs, and endearing personalities, are the reasons audiences have taken to them so enthusiastically. ull disclosure: I sing in the Brighton Orpheus Choir. I have never sung in a choir before and it’s been great fun; there is something special about becoming part of a glorious, magisterial whole: a powerful combination of voices. Singing in a choir is spiritually, intellectually, physically and musically invigorating, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. This Saturday we are singing Bach’s St John Passion. The chorus plays crowds, soliders, and priests and also passes comment on the story outside the action in chorales. The piece is thrilling, with the dramatic story of Christ's crucifixion told in complex interweaving choral parts. The ‘Sleep well...’ movement at the end is a highlight to listen out for, slowing the pace down for melancholic ruminations and deep, rich harmonies. The BOC will be joined by professional soloists Nicolas Chisholm, Nicholas Warden, Shona Knight, Corinne Hull and Rory Green, as well as the Musicians of All Saints orchestra and guest players. Students can go for £6 and under 17s for free, so this is a great opportunity for a newcomer to enter the stunning world of classical music. I'm always moved when hearing choral music in churches; the sublime architecture and acoustics lend a sense of grandeur and transcendence to performances. The St John Passion is overwhelmingly beautiful enough for the secularist, the religious, or the theistically indifferent to enjoy on a purely musical level. Brighton Orpheus Choir, All Saints Church, Hove, Saturday 19 March, 7.30pm, Tickets £6 to £15, Under 17s free, £12 concessions at www.brightonorpheus.org or on the door

B40 are performing at The Brighton Centre on May 3rd despite the highly publicised, bitter '2B40' row surrounding usage rights of the band name. They Formed in 1979 with Ali Campbell at the helm and were pivotal in defining reggae for a generation. The band dominated the music charts, selling 70 million albums worldwide during the ‘80s and ‘90s. Their national treasure status still endures in the hearts of many, so how did it all go wrong? Ali Campbell and Mickey Virtue quit the band in 2008, followed by Terence 'Astro' Wilson in 2013. At the time he complained that the band had become a 'rudderless ship' saying his heart wasn't in the most recent album 'Getting Over The Storm'. Speaking to The Mirror subsequent to his departure he said: “I cannot bear to see what we are offering to our loyal fans who have stood by us through thick and thin. I think it’s clear that I’ve had enough of being depressed, as I’m sure other members are, but the difference is I’m not prepared to continue to be miserable at home and work.” The other 'UB40' are original members Robin and Duncan Campbell, (Ali's brothers) Jimmy Brown, Norman Hassan, Brian Travers and Earl Falconer, who claim that Ali Campbell et al have no right to use the name, accused

them of being a tribute band. In 2014 Robin, guitarist and vocalist reportedly said: “Ali is selling tickets as UB40 when he isn’t. He’s taken our name because he can’t sell tickets on his own. They are perfectly entitled to play any UB40 tracks they like. What they are not entitled to do is to pretend they are UB40.” Ali is no longer on speaking terms with his brothers, and hit back saying: “Prior to me leaving, when it was falling apart, Duncan said to me: ‘Stop singing, do your own thing and that way you’ll get what you’re entitled to.’ But when I left, I found out Duncan had joined the band in my place. I was furious. If you went to see The Rolling Stones and Derek Jagger turned up instead of Mick you’d feel a bit peeved.” Writs were served by the other UB40 to Ali, Mickey and Astro and a high court battle will now ensue. Latest 7 spoke to Mickey Virtue to get the low down. How would you respond to the 'tribute band' jibes made by the other UB40? When our fans come to our gigs they want to hear all of the old classics and they want to hear Ali singing them – it's as simple as that. The songs are not the same if Ali isn’t singing them. To call us the tribute band is ridiculous! What will you playing at the gig in May? We will be performing all of the classics from the ‘Labour Of Love’ album with heavy sprinkles of our other material. How does it feel to be touring together again? The last time was in 2008 and to be honest nothing has LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 8

changed for us. We are a band of brothers, it's always really easy when we're together. We still get an amazing reaction from the fans wherever we go, the atmosphere is always electric. You're coming to Brighton in May, what do you think of our city? We've been coming to Brighton since 1980, so we're really familiar with the city. I love the diversity, both with the people and musically. There’s something for everyone. The shows are always really great, in fact every show we’ve ever done in Brighton has been amazing. There is so much love and support from the fans, so we are looking forward to coming down! Who were your musical inspirations growing up? I grew up in the ‘60s, so there was so much great music around at that time, lots of pioneering artists. In particular I loved Bob Marley and The Beatles. What music to do you listen to now? Everything! I've got really eclectic taste, I think it's good to listen to everything and not limit yourself. Reggae is obviously my first love, there's loads of fantastic music coming out of Jamaica right now, which I love. What's the best advice anyone ever gave you? Don't get drunk before a gig – I listened and so far it's worked out well for me. After the show? Now that’s a different story! www.brightoncentre.co.uk
