his is Betsy the dog and Lenny the boy, they are best friends and the two true loves of Sharon Caple. Betsy celebrates her tenth birthday this year – that’s 70 dog years! She’s been a loyal companion since she was a pup. Sharon revealed: “She’s the most gentle dog I’ve ever had, I sometimes wonder whether she is in fact a human in a dog’s body. She has a habit of trying to sit on my lap, forgetting what size she actually is! She’s a massive
part of our family especially now Lenny is around, he’s five and Betsy has learnt to know where to go to get food! I’ve often spotted Lenny offering his lunch/tea under the table a few times!! Betsy is a gun dog so needs lots of walking, which we all enjoy doing, her favourite thing is catching pebbles on the beach. I really believe dog is a woman’s best friend as she really is, I can’t imagine life without her!”. Tell us who you love, win fizz! Written by Samantha Harman

reens. Ever get the feeling you’re not eating enough of them? After shopping by instinct for each meal I have, one thing that my fridge is tells me is that I’m not eating enough greeny green veg. I do like vegetables, don’t get me wrong. I know enough people who seem to have a chosen veg and never waver off it. Peppers, carrots, peas – one for each and never to try the others. It’s like a few careless parents overcooked the cabbage too many times and left my friends distrustful of anything that isn’t their ‘trusty friend veg’. I even met someone once who didn’t like corn on the cob – that’s practically a toy as you eat it! In my panic I bought a large packet of stir fry veg, all the goodness and still holding onto its crunch. Yum! I’m feeling better already. LATEST 7 | 5

SHAKESPEARE IN SUMMER > The bard’s greatest tragedy, King Lear, opens Theatre Royal’s summer season
T
heatre Royal Brighton’s summer season opens with a major new production of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy, King Lear, which runs from Tuesday 3 to Saturday 7 May as part of a UK tour. The renowned Shakespearian actor and four time Olivier award nominee Michael Pennington will reprise the role of King Lear after his highly acclaimed performance at the Shakespeare Center New York in 2014. The Brooklyn Eagle said of his performance: “Michael Pennington will break your heart. One of England’s foremost classical actors, this is a King Lear to grieve for in Shakespeare's darkest play”. Max Webster (The Lorax, Old Vic; Much Ado About Nothing, Shakespeare’s Globe; Twelfth Night, Regent’s Park) directs a distinguished cast of fourteen actors. In Shakespeare’s epic tragedy, an ageing tyrant’s decision to divide his kingdom tears his family apart, sparks catastrophic civil war and destroys all that he has. Driven from his home, King Lear endures madness, blindness and great suffering as he battles a great storm. Yet with madness he finds reason, from blindness he gains new sight, after betrayal he discovers loyalty and through his suffering a better world emerges. Sir Howard Panter, Joint Chief Executive of Ambassador Theatre Group, who are presenting King Lear on tour, commented: “The eyes of the world will be on Britain this year, the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. To mark this significant year, we are delighted to be bringing this major new production of King Lear to so many regional British playhouses and I am particularly proud that Michael Pennington, one of the finest Shakespearian actors of our time, will be playing Lear.” LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 8
Michael Pennington’s (Lear) stage career spans over 50 years. He was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1964 to 1966, and again from 19741981. In 1984 his role in Tolstoy's Strider at the National Theatre won him an Olivier award nomination. In 1986, Pennington and director Michael Bogdanov founded the English Shakespeare Company. As joint artistic director, he starred in the company's inaugural productions of The Henrys and, in 1987, the sevenplay history cycle of The Wars of the Roses, which toured worldwide and was televised. Pennington played such parts as Richard II, Prince Hal/Henry V and Jack Cade, for which he received an Olivier Award Nomination. In 2012 he played his fifth consecutive Chichester season as Antony in Antony and Cleopatra opposite Kim Cattrall. Recent notable performances have been as Edgar in Strindberg's The Dance of Death, adapted by Howard Brenton at the Gate Theatre, John of Gaunt in Richard II (RSC), and as Anthony Blunt in Alan Bennett's Single Spies at the Rose Theatre Kingston. He played Michael Foot in The Iron Lady with Meryl Streep; and among his notable TV appearances have been the title role of Oedipus the King and in the television movie The Return of Sherlock Holmes. Do not miss your chance to see this major new production of King Lear during its brief Brighton run. www.atgtickets.com/brighton 0844 871 7650 LATEST 7 | 7

heeky Nando’s is on!” Jesus exclaimed. “Oi oi!” cried the apostles, and they all began chanting the tune of that song they play at the darts. Sure enough, come Thursday sunset, Jesus and the disciples convened outside the restaurant. They had planned to prelash at Wetherspoons, but Jesus was still banned from the time he trashed the place. The lads always teased Jesus that he’d done this upon hearing they would no longer be serving Sunday roasts, but Jesus swore blind it was because they were making commercial profit in the Temple, which was the heathens’ local shopping centre. As they ordered, it was like any ordinary meal out – Bartholemew getting extra hot even though he knew he’d regret it, everyone ribbing Jesus when he just ordered pitta bread and salad. As the food arrived, however, Jesus’s sense of humour appeared to desert him. “Boys”, he said “I’ve had this stewing round my nut for a while now.” “Oh great, another lecture”, smirked Judas. Jesus threw him some savage shade, leaving him to look down into his freshly refilled sprite. “Thing is…”, Jesus continued, “I reckon one of you’s gonna proper mug me off tomorrow.” The apostles were incredulous. After all, rule one of The Bethlehem Big Dog’s Dirty Dozen manifesto was never mug a fellow member off. “Whoever receives this bread, representing my body, will betray me”, said Jesus, throwing half a pitta at Judas, who had stopped listening.... “Nice one mate”, he spluttered through his mouthful. “I owe you one.”

re you, like me, paranoid about your passwords? I struggled for years to remember a simple four digit code for my bank card, I'm not number friendly, but now I have to deal with an inordinately large number of passwords, and all of them I am instructed need to be committed to memory and never ever written down. I can see the point, with an inbox full of spam, it's easy to see that one’s personal data can be hacked into and stolen. I suppose a canny crook could get into my impoverished bank account and pick up the odd few pence or pretend to be me on Facebook although why anyone would want to be me beggars belief. Then again, there are times I would quite like to be someone else. Have you ever harboured any desires to change places with someone? Who would be top of your list? I gave this some thought last night and set about making a list of names and adding the pros and cons. It was a sad process but I had a free evening and after Corrie nothing on the box appealed. I added a few rich people but soon dismissed them. I added some talented musicians and artists but they too went. I thought about friends who live in great locations and lead what appear to be charmed lives – but they went too. In the end I realised that for all life's shortcomings, being me isn't that bad, as long as I can remember the password! LATEST 7 | 9

J U L I A N C L A RY > Talks about his UK Tour ‘The Joy of Mincing’
J
ulian Clary, national trinket, author, TV and radio star is appearing at The Brighton Dome Concert Hall, April 23rd. The Joy of Mincing is Julian Clary’s celebration of 30 years as a camp comedian. There is so much to tell you; the ups and downs of his sordid love life, the true and heart stopping account of how he saved Dame Joan Collins’ life, and don’t start him on the perils of his DIY electrical home enema kit. On stage Julian will proudly wear his welldeserved M.B.E. (Mincer of the British Empire). It was the last thing he expected to receive when he knelt down in front of Prince Charles in the scullery at Buckingham Palace! And because Julian gives and gives (until it hurts) he will be handing out honours to a lucky few in the audience too. This is Julian at his filthy best. Live and unplugged. Remaining one of the country's best loved entertainers, Julian's popularity has endured across a three decade career in show business. With a variety of credits to his name Julian is not only a comedian but presenter, author and established pantomime star too. His colourful career has seen him win Celebrity Big Brother in 2012, become a

Sunday Times bestselling novelist, complete countless smashhit tours and more recently he added children’s author to his long list of credentials, publishing the delightfully amusing children’s book, The Bolds. Julian also fronted a brand new threepart natural history series for ITV, entitled Nature Nuts, which aired in August. Come and witness a masterclass in camp comedy as Julian brings The Joy of Mincing across the UK in 2016. Why have you named your tour, The Joy of Mincing? I always like to get 'mincing' into the title. We've had Lord of the Mince; Natural Born Mincer; and Mincing Machine was my first tour in 1989. I don't know why; it sets the tone, doesn't it? I suppose mincing, apart from being a means of walking around, is a way of life. The Joy of Mincing is a declaration of the joy of life despite disapproval, perhaps. Do you still feel people disapprove? Well, exactly. I think there probably is some [disapproval]. And mincing, which is an old fashioned word, was probably in its day borne out of standing up in the face of that disapproval. Is the show as rude as ever you haven't toned things down? No, I don't think so. It's the one time you can let rip a bit, on stage.I don't want to be filthy for the sake of it, but I think it's a comic device. You just exaggerate who you really are on stage. I'm quite fond of moments of vulgarity. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 8

You've been performing for 30 years. How has comedy changed during that time? Yes, it's my 30th anniversary next year. It's changed beyond all recognition. It used to be an eclectic selection of people in small rooms above pubs, in the 1980s. Our comedy was a reaction against the rightwing men in bowties who were being offered as light entertainment in those days. And has your comedy changed? Yes, a bit. I think you evolve, whether you want to or not. There was a certain amount of anger and delight in confronting people when I started, which has more or less gone now. Making people laugh is my main aim in life these days. I don't think there's so much to be angry about now. Do you have fans who have been following your career for that full 30 years? There are, and they bring their children along now. I'm very fond of them, you know. You don't know their names necessarily, but it’s always a joy to see a familiar face. There’s a delightful family from Tunbridge Wells I've known since the boy was 13 and now he's a grownup. It's charming. We talk about the old days at the Hackney Empire, or our aches and pains. There's a connection there, even though we don't really know each other, because on one level we do. What sort of stories will you be telling on this tour? Well, there's a rather long story about how I once saved Joan Collins' life in a swimming pool in St Tropez. It's a true story, which I won't give away now, but it's a long, meandering tale that fills the first half. Then the second half is about MBEs. I've noticed a lot of my friends in the business are getting these awards. They're handing them out like Smarties. I think, 'Ooh, I'd like one of those', but it's never happened so I'm obviously not favoured by the Establishment. I can only blame myself… So during the show, I give myself one and call it 'Mincer of the British Empire'. I'm making lots of these MBEs and handing them out to people in the audience. Just the lucky few, you understand: it’s not included in the ticket price. I'm always looking for an excuse to talk to the audience. That's what keeps me going. You can get bored if you're just reeling off the same old nonsense. I'm always very interested in the audience and their stories. People are very funny; they never fail to amuse. I assume that if you were offered an MBE in real life, you would accept? I'd bite their hands off! I think I've been too rude about the Royal Family over the years, unfortunately. I'm probably on some kind of black list somewhere. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 8
Is there anywhere you're particularly looking forward to visiting on your tour? I love Glasgow. My rule used to be that the further north you go, the more extrovert people are. But I've changed my mind about that rule because I've had lovely gigs down south as well as in grim northern towns. I’m an any time, any place kinda gal, I guess. Do you find it difficult being on tour? Other comedians complain that it’s lonely and that you eat badly because you're constantly on the road. Well, nobody's making you do it. And there's a Waitrose in every town these days. It’s probably just the dreary, married heterosexual types that complain. This is what I wanted to do 30 years ago, and I'm still doing it – standing on stage, talking about myself and getting applause for it. What’s not to like? I suppose it's a bit weird coming off stage and being on your own, but it doesn't bother me. What was your worst ever gig? It was in Chatham, in Kent. I don't know what was wrong with them, but nobody laughed for two hours. I was seething. I refused to ever go back. If you search through all of my novels, I'm rude about Chatham in all of them. It clearly scarred me for life, and I’m still seeking revenge. Your personal life seems to have changed as much as your career – you've turned your back on partying and now live an idyllic rural lifestyle in a village in Kent, is that right? Yes. Well that’s what I’m telling you anyway. I think there’s nothing drearier than a 56 year old homosexual hanging around Soho in lycra. Mercifully, one grows out of that. Thank goodness. The award winning actors will star in the adaptation, appearing on stage together for the very first time. Speaking to Latest TV, Shane revealed: “ I came to see the show a couple of years ago because I don’t live far from Brighton. We were talking about it then, but as we were tied up with Eastenders we weren’t in a position to take the parts. After Christmas our manager approached me and Jessie about performing in the play together and we thought it was a great idea.” Jessie is equally excited about the project: “We got the script and whenever we had a spare half an hour at the
BBC studios, we’d go through it and now we’re here! It’s really enjoyable, I love the seeing the reaction from the audience, which is something you don’t get when you work on TV.” Peter James is overjoyed to have the pair on board, saying: “Both have an extraordinary range as actors, you have to be a good actor to sustain all those years in soap. afe Chilli was once called Green Mango, a Thai restaurant that I had enjoyed a few times, the food was always good, authentic as far as I could tell and the service was charming too. So when I heard that they had rebranded I was fascinated to find out how and indeed why. Well the good news is that the owners have given the place a bit of a revamp and taken a long hard look at the menu – and it's all for the better. We started with some prawn crackers, the brown ones that taste so much better and have a nice dryness that the Chinese ones seldom have. I was with Ms McD, a regular dining partner when it comes to spicy food and also a great companion as she too likes to order dishes to share. We started with Thai sausage, a dish I had never had, and we both loved it, the mix of sweet pork and fresh spices was fragrant and zingy, there was fire but no so much so that it damaged my tongue. We did however avoid the bird's eye chillies on the side for fear of their heat. We also tried the coconut bites, a variant on tempura where coconut and chilli play a major role. We selected prawns and it was a good decision as they were of the very highest quality, sweet and firm, and wrapped in a crisp batter loaded with coconut and chilli, really delicious. We asked for advice on the next course and were directed to Royal Orchid Beef. This could be worrying for those of you who know an alternative meaning for the word

orchid, I will not elaborate save to say that it was a delicious dish of grilled sirloin in a gentle pepper sauce with onion rings all on a bed of perfectly cooked cauliflower and broccoli florets. It was a real grower too, not a huge sledge hammer of spice but one that developed as you ate it. This we coupled with Phi Phi soft shell crab curry. I love soft shell crab and this delicate dish was a real delight, again a delicate spicing and this time a creamy texture. The vegetables in the sauce added more texture and there was plenty of crab too, often a problem with premium priced ingredients. With both we ate jasmine rice, plain, simple and absolutely right. We drank beer too, I like beer with spicy food. After a short pause we pondered the idea of dessert, but neither of us felt the real need as our first two courses had been both generous and satisfying – but needs must so we decided to share one. Very glad we were too, the sizzling Thai pancake with coffee icecream and condensed milk drizzle was fabulous, certainly not to be missed. The food was excellent, the service as good as ever and it is all very sensibly priced. If we had one complaint it would be that the room deserves a splash of vibrant colour to balance the vibrancy of the inventive cooking, a modern take on traditional dishes that is impressively successful. 8 Church Road, Hove, East Sussex, BN3 2FL 01273 71039, www.cafechilli.co.uk

Directed by Sean Mathias, this production received highly acclaimed reviews at the Cort Theatre in New York whilst in repertory alongside ‘Waiting For Godot’, also starring stage and screen friends, McKellen and Stewart and directed by Mathias. One summer’s evening, two ageing writers, Hirst and Spooner, meet in a Hampstead pub and continue their drinking into the night at Hirst’s stately house nearby. As the pair become increasingly inebriated, and their stories increasingly unbelievable, the lively conversation soon turns into a revealing power game, further complicated by the return home of two sinister younger men. Patrick Stewart says: “I saw the original production of ‘No Man's Land’ three times in one week at Wyndham's Theatre and would
have seen it more if I could have afforded the tickets. I made a promise to myself that one day I would play Spooner or Hirst but to be doing it back at Wyndham's with Ian McKellen was a fantasy I never entertained.” Ian McKellen says: “Playing Spooner to Patrick’s Hirst on Broadway was a constant joy, which is why I am delighted to be back with him.” Multi awardwinning Ian McKellen has had a 55 year long career. For the Royal Shakespeare Company he played Romeo, Macbeth, Iago and King Lear and at the National Theatre, in productions of ‘Coriolanus’, ‘Richard III’, ‘Uncle Vanya’ and

cottish folk singer and singer Kris Drever has been right at the coalface of the postmillennial folk movement, as a solo artist and as a member of the hugely popular three piece, Lau. Originally from Orkney he moved to Shetland a couple of years ago… "I was doing a gig up there and I met a woman…" says Kris, who now also has a new baby to nurture. "Sometimes, that is all it takes." He's taking a bit of time out after touring with LAU, and before he sets off on his solo tour at the end of March. It seems to be a traditional period of the year when touring plays second fiddle. "Around this time it's all viking stuff, setting fire to viking boats and staying up all night drinking beer… All the musicians are tied up for a month at this time of the year!" His new album, and first solo record for six years, is ‘If Wishes Were Horses’, a collection of almost all original, and semiautobiographical songs, including the title track itself. "It's about the futility of wishing things to be different from what they are," he explains. "That's not to say you can't change, but it's an encapsulation of things that we'd like to see better. For instance, I think it would be better if there was a lie detector attached to politicians’ ties. And every time they told a lie it would get a little bit tighter. “That's never gonna happen. It's as likely to happen as me attaching enough tug boats to the City of Glasgow and moving it all the way to Shetland for my own convenience," he laughs. "It's about politicians all being liars, and about us not being wealthy and immortal, and it's really hard to get a good choice of coffee in Shetland. We don't have a place where beards and tattoos use beakers and magic to make it happen," he laughs. Komedia, Thurs 31 March, 7.30pm, £13

he Elias String Quartet lived up to my high expectations last month, so I’m really looking forward to the next Sunday morning chamber music concert, this time featuring the Heath Quartet. Ages 825 can go for free as part of the Cavatina scheme, simply head to the Dome's ticket office on 29 New Road to arrange tickets. Both myself and reviewer Andrew Connal have enthused about the Heath Quartet before in these pages, with Andrew praising the “beautifully sustained stratospheric high notes” from first violinist Oliver Heath, as well as highlighting their spontaneity and intimate rapport. Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue in C minor K.546 is an all overtheplace wonder for the quartet to tackle (and the audience to try and wrap its head around). The sharp piece is also a lovely opening jolt to the senses in the programme. Ravel's only string quartet (in F) is a real beauty, prompting Debussy to exclaim: “In the name of the gods of Music... do not touch a note of what you have written.” The long opening section of smooth chords in fellow Romantic composer Tchaikovsky's String Quartet No.1 are gorgeous and inviting, reminding me of Mendelssohn's beautiful melodies, and with some more dangerous flourishes thrown in to spice things up. The whole programme is intoxicating stuff for a Sunday morning, so pop along, meet a friend, buy a nice drink or food treat, and enjoy some sublime music. Heath Quartet, Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome, Sunday 27 March,11am, £18.50, Ages 825 free, www.brightondome.org

his Thursday Sean Lock plays a sold out show in Worthing Theatres’ Assembly Hall. Yup, all the tickets have gone (although it is always worth phoning up on the day to find out about returns), which is why we are giving you a heads up that Mr Lock is back in our area – this time in Eastbourne – in September, and tickets are available. Most people are familiar with Lock thanks to his stirling work on 8 Out Of 10
Cats – the original and the hijacked Countdown version – and he is a real treat to watch back where he belongs, on stage and performing great stand up.

e’ve just discovered the work of Anthony Freeman, yet another talented artist who has gravitated towards Brighton after spending much of his life working in the Middle East and Africa. He’s absolutely passionate about portraiture, and has brought to life many famous faces, using swathes of vibrant, almost luminous, abstract colours. His portfolio includes pop stars, political figures and sporting greats.
Legacy
Anthony also paints very big cats! (But you’ll have to get hold of our new book to see more of these.) He makes regular visits to South Africa, and his love of wildlife is reflected in artworks that focus on endangered animals, which he hopes will aid awareness and conservation. He’s even created a 'Forever Wild' clothing range. www.artymagazines.com
