his week’s loved up couple are David and Pandora Duff. In 2002 the gorgeous Pandora wafted into David’s music studio in London for a business meeting, changing his life forever, he explained: “I was in a meeting with Radio DJ Gary Davies when she walked in. My meeting was brought to a quick halt by her captivating beauty and Gary was sent packing!” Some weeks later Pandora queued to buy David Bowie tickets at the Hammersmith

Odeon for an impromptu concert: “It was a surprise for me and a great memory. We have been together since and have never once argued. The best thing I can say is that whatever I am doing I would rather do it with her than without her, she has seen me through rough times, including the passing of my parents. ver done those bargains with your future self that would be bullying with anyone else? Of course you have. If you’ve ever owned a credit card you know exactly what I’m talking about. My future, and lessthanpleasedwiththesituation self, is tired. And that’s because late at night I make a bargain that just for one evening I can survive on less sleep because I’m enjoying being awake. I’m not doing anything mad and crazy. In fact, when I am out at night I’m pretty good at getting back in good time, unless it’s a special occasion. It’s the unwinding from the day that I savour the most and am most reticent to cut short. GIRL TALK! > Theatre Royal Brighton is set to go back to the ‘70s as Jackie The Musical comes to Brighton

O

nce there was a time with no mobile phones, no apps, no texting, no emails and no twitter. Angstridden teenage girls waited with bated breath by the letterbox for their weekly issue of Jackie Magazine... unless their big sister got there first! Jackie accompanied millions of girls through their teenage years in the ‘70s and ‘80s, years of boy

trouble, ironing hair and problem solving from resident agony aunts, Cathy and Claire. The magazine supported and inspired those girls and, best of all, it was great fun. Jackie the Musical revisits those heady days, and tells the story of a fifty something divorcée who revisits her stash of wellthumbed Jackie

magazines for the same reason she first read them nearly forty years ago: advice on how best to navigate the opposite sex. The quizzes, the fashion tips, the ‘do’s and don’ts on a first date’ and above all the Cathy and Claire problem pages are all devoured eagerly by our plucky heroine Jackie as she revisits the dizzy world of the teen bible. With her ex and a handsome new guy both on the scene, the valuable lessons she learnt as a girl begin to influence her future and Jackie discovers the one person in control of her life is – her. Funny and feisty, with a soundtrack featuring the era’s most beloved and memorable hits, including the sounds of Pop Idols Donny Osmond, David Cassidy and Marc Bolan played live on stage, the show promises a whirlwind tour of Planet Seventies and a most fabulous night out! Sussex based actress Janet Dibley plays Jackie. Janet became a household name in the 1980s, costarring with Nicholas Lyndhurst in ITV’s The Two of Us. Janet joined the cast of the BBC soap Doctors in 2010 as Dr Elaine Cassidy, a role she played for over two years. Jackie the Musical is by Mike James, with choreography by Arlene Phillips and directed by Hove based director Anna Linstrum. www.atgtickets.com/brighton 0844 871 7650 Tue 5 – Sat 9 Apr 2016 Eves 7.45pm Thu & Sat mats 2.30pm LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 8

> Introducing Peyton, lover number one

> One is fun!

I

H

didn’t really notice him at first. I thought he was good looking, but I wouldn’t ever say it was love or even lust at first sight. To be honest Peyton wasn’t really on my radar. So I really didn’t expect him to ask me to walk with him to the pub one Friday night. I got a message from him saying: “I don’t really know anyone and I thought I might socialise for once, can I meet up with you and go to the pub together?” Well I wasn’t going to say no. We met up at the bus stop then walked to meet up with some more friends, the night became a blur of pub hopping until we made it to a gay bar. I found out that my party animal friend, Phil, was also there so I thought that we should tag along. As a general rule no straight girl goes to a gay club and expects to get lucky – if anything we go there to get away from all the creepy drunk guys that hit on us. But it didn’t quite work out the way I expected. “Hey I think your friend likes me and I’m not gay. Could you dance with me?” said Peyton. Not quite like being asked in the movies but I was too drunk to question him and realise how borderlinehomophobic his request was. It had been four years since I made out with someone on the dance floor. Dancing turned into grinding and then into snogging and I just thought it was a bit of fun. I had plans to take a night bus with my friend back home so going round Peyton’s wasn’t even an option. When he left, I got a bus and life went on. Checking my phone in the morning, a text from Peyton read: “Last night was fun but I don’t want to mess you about. I’m on a break with my girlfriend.” After years of watching Rachel and Ross, I was relieved for the close call.

ow my friends laughed at my first world problems when I told them that I had trouble fitting a lobster into my deep freeze. They were of course right, finding space for a lobster is somewhat effete after all. But there I was with this cooked lobster that I want to use in a few weeks’ time, and the freezer was chocablock with ice lollies and containers of beef ragu, chicken stock and soups that I had made for future consumption. I like to plan ahead and the freezer is a great help, especially as I live alone. And as a keen cook there is always too much food to eat in one sitting. I can remember giving a gift to a friend years ago and on opening it he declared it to be the most depressing gift he had ever received. I was surprised as I knew that he liked to cook and the newly published Delia Smith ‘One is fun’ seemed ideal. In many ways it was but he also saw it as a declaration of his status then and into a very lonely future. I apologised, although thirty years on he is still single, so I bet those pages are well worn by now. Good old Delia! I find it hard to cook for one so I do what I have always done and eat too much. No, seriously, I freeze things that are suitable to freeze, hence the lobster dilemma. It's nice to know that I can delve beneath the choc ices and find a lasagne or a pie, and with careful planning I can eat very well and reduce waste – but not waist!

G

orgeous Celebrity Big Brother hunk, Jeremy McConnell, paid a visit to Brighton recently to host 'Saturday Night GLAM' at Shooshh nightclub. Prior to that, he caught up with cousin Kim McConnell and her daughter Lily Packham, who live in Brighton, for a cuddle and a catch up. Meeting at Jury's Inn Waterfront, Kim revealed: “We are all really proud of Jeremy, he did so well on Celebrity Big Brother. We are part of a big family and we're all very close. It was nice to see him because he is so busy at the moment appearing in PA's all over the country. I'm looking forward to a proper catchup when things calm down!”. Jeremy admitted he was intending to stay teetotal that night, even though there was freebar available to him at Shooshh. (The reason being an early flight to Majorca the following day to visit actress, Stephanie Davies, his on/off girlfriend.) Their controversial love affair certainly raised a few eyebrows in the CBB house this year, but also made for compelling viewing! Latest 7 wish him lots of luck on all of his new adventures.

> Sussex teenage playwright makes stunning debut

T

he Bula Loop, a darkly comic play written by Tom J Page (a young scriptwriter and actor from Eastbourne) is set to perform at this year’s Brighton Fringe. There will also be previews in Eastbourne at the end of April, and Tom’s script was inspired by his own personal experience of a family living with autism. Glowingly described by the Eastbourne Herald as “a sharply observed play where domestic bickering masks heartfelt pain”, The Bula Loop is a poignant new comedy where the central character, Adam, dreams of travelling the world on a ‘Bula Loop’ roundtheworld ticket, but all goes pear shaped when his brother gets there first and announces his gapyear plans over dinner. Tom said: “The play began life last March when I devised a 20minute A level performance. The feedback was incredible and I was encouraged to develop the script into an hourlong play.”

Tom takes the central role of Adam and is accompanied by professional performers as well as other fellow drama students. It is directed and produced by Tim Marriott, Eastbourne College’s Director of Drama and former stage and television actor best known for seven series of the hit BBC sitcom, The Brittas Empire. Tom Purser, campaigns manager, National Autistic Society (NAS), said “Representations of autism, particularly when inspired by personal experience, can help challenge myths and change lives by helping people to understand more about this lifelong developmental condition.” The Bula Loop plays at The Printers Playhouse, Eastbourne April 27 – 29, 7.45pm, www.printersplayhouse.co.uk before it heads to the Brighton Fringe, St Andrews Church, Hove, May 5 – 8 at 6pm. he North London noiseniks have risen through the ranks to play their biggest Brighton show to date, complete with mega light show and a well stocked mosh pit. With singer Ellie Roswell mostly static it was left to the guitarists to fill the stage with polished posturing and powerful riffs as they thrashed out shoegaze, Banglesy poppunk and 80s gothinfluenced rockers from their debut album. Drummer Joel Amey sang lead on quasiballad ‘Swallowtail’ before the Nirvananicked ‘Moaning Lisa Smile’ closed the set. A heavy encore of Giant Peach ended with Roswell diving into the crowd. Good energy but a formulaic performance. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 22 March. Steve Clements ★★★★★

ith the house music revival continuing, thanks to the likes of Disclosure, Rudimental and Hannah Wants, London's Disciples were catapulted to the forefront of the new wave thanks to their hook up with Calvin Harris, and the smash hit ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ (430m Youtube views…) of last year. "Me and Gavin are published by Fly Eye, a publishing company owned by Calvin Harris," says Luke Anthony McDermott, one third of Disciples. "He asked us to send him some music, including a rough mix of ‘How Deep Is Your Love’, to see what his thoughts were and where we could take the track, because it was quite mellow at the time. He said he had a few ideas…" Indeed, and with the unstoppable Harris juggernaut behind the hit, it was all but inevitable that Disciples would climb up a few more rungs. Along with Nathan V Duvall and Gavin Harryman Koolmon, the trio have been developing the live show, which they are taking out on the road for a short UK tour. How does it work as a trio? "We all do the same thing; we all DJ, we all produce, we all songwriter. As a team we bang heads all the time, but that's how the magic works. You have too many ideas on a page, then you have to take away until it sounds perfect. I always say three heads are better than one. "For the live show, we'll be DJing and there will be instruments. We'll have special guests with us, singers. But it will be mainly us three. It'll be DJ orientated, but using a lot of electronics, a lot of Ableton gear, programmed stuff, using instruments synced in. We're putting in a load of our own money to make sure we put on a good show." Concorde 2, Wed 6 April, 7.30pm, £10

’m very happy to highlight a great opportunity to imbibe some sublime art in an affordable, accessible way. Anthony Minghella's production of Puccini's Madama Butterfly at New York's Metropolitan Opera is being streamed live to cinemas in HD this Saturday evening. Event cinema has been steadily growing in popularity over the last 10 years and having tried it myself I can heartily recommend it. I saw Boris Godunov streamed live from the Royal Opera House last week; my chums wouldn't have wanted to splash out for the train fare and tickets for the real thing, so it was a fun, convenient way to witness Bryn Terfel's lustrous bassbaritone. The cinema was still atmospheric (sold out with a friendly crowd), it cost under £20 and I was home before 10.15pm. The Met Opera is one of the world's most revered opera houses, and Minghella's production (premiered in 2006) is in fact renowned for cinematic visuals, featuring “visual richness” and “striking spectral puppeteers” according to bachtrack.com. This version drew praise from the New York Times for conductor Karel Mark Chichon's performance which “kept the drama flowing inexorably forward without stinting on Puccini’s lushness.” Puccini deals in highly emotional drama with beautiful melodies so this would serve as a fine firsteveropera. This screening is therefore an easy way to broaden one's horizons this weekend, or to see a new interpretation of the hugely popular opera if you are a fan already. Met Opera: Madama Butterfly HD Live stream, Saturday 2 April, 5.55pm, Duke's At Komedia £8£30 Cineworld, Eastbourne, £14.20 to £19.50
