LOVED UP > The princess and the frogs
B
eautiful princess, Ria Barney, was tired of kissing frogs. So her dad Phil, intervened and in doing so, rescued her from a lifetime of slippery amphibians! Sam Collins is a work colleague of his and Phil instinctively knew that he and Ria would hit it off. Fast forward three years, the couple are still going strong and in spite of a few minor bumps in the road, are totally loved up. Sam revealed: “Ria is the most kind and considerate person I have ever met. She
always thinks about what's best for me and pushes me to better myself. Her belief in me is unwavering.” So what does Ria love about Sam? “He's not self obsessed and has never left me hanging. He always calls when he says he will, he always turns up when he says he will. Also, more importantly, he lets me be right 95% of the time!” Modern love is hard, but these two are definitely testament to that fact that love conquers all.

She told us: “I lost my husband ten years ago and felt like I didn’t want to live without him, being out on the gay scene saved me. I have great friends who are such warm people, I missed that affection after Steve died. I feel so accepted and welcome here.” Her advice for feeling great at 78? “Don’t drink or smoke.” Elaine, we salute you! LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
eenage years. I remember mine as haze of misanthropy, awkward limbs and other people appearing to do it so much better than me. So I’m baffled by the realisation that for years I’ve been saying, “I feel just like a teenager!” to simply mean Cloud 9 postcode and carefree of worries. I had this epiphany at the weekend when I truly was acting like my teenage self – I was in bed, in the afternoon, deeply emerged in a novel I had been given for Christmas. I forgot to get out of bed, I forgot to eat, I forgot to drink, all I knew was the book I was reading and… one more chapter. That, my mother will assure you, is a long way to feeling like the teenager that I was. That and the ravenous search for pizza that immediately followed the last page being finished. Being young covers so much – learning, living, hurting, shouting, sleeping – all felt with the raw nerves that have yet to benefit from the callouses of experience. So I’m going to stop using the phrase “Feel like a teenager” – or at least stop using it so narrowly. It’s a cheat to my past self and the current crop of teens navigating through so much. YOU’RE HISTORY! > Horrible Histories return to Theatre Royal Brighton with two new shows
T
he wonderful Birmingham Stage Company, whose production of ‘Gangsta Granny’ delighted audiences recently, are returning Theatre Royal Brighton with their new Horrible Histories stage shows, ‘Incredible Invaders’ and ‘Groovy Greeks’. As with their previously hugely popular Horrible Histories productions both these shows use actors and 3D Bogglevision special effects. In ‘Incredible Invaders’ the Celts are crunched when the Ruthless Romans invaded Britain. Can crazy Caratacus can save the nation? Hide behind Hadrian’s Wall and witness the Savage Saxons smash their way in. Can you stop King Alfred burning his buns? Discover who’s at Sutton Hoo and survive the Vicious Vikings as they sail into the audience. It’s a thousand year journey with Incredible Invaders! ‘Groovy Greeks’ takes us from savage Sparta to angry Athens to discover the truth about growing up in Greece. Take on the Trojans and pummel the Persians! Compete in the first ever Olympic Games and appear in the very first play! Meet your match with the Minotaur and be zapped by Zeus! Hold on tight as you gatecrash the gruesome and Groovy Greeks! It’s history with the nasty bits left in! Writer and director Neal Foster said today “I had a hugely exciting time bringing the Groovy Greeks to life in Horrible Histories style and loved shining the spotlight on Celtic, Roman, Saxon and Viking life in Incredible Invaders. Both shows feature special amazing 3D effects that provide a spectacular way for both children and adults to enter these extraordinary historical periods”. Are Incredible Invaders and Groovy Greeks BSC’s best Horrible Histories theatre shows yet? Designed to both entertain and educate their audiences from ages 5 to 105! Come and goggle at the goings on of those Groovy Greeks and let the Incredible Invaders ignite your imaginations to learn more about our island’s early history. So don’t delay – book your tickets today! Tue 12 – Sat 16 Apr www.atgtickets.com/brighton 0844 871 7650

itself is behind frosted glass doors and emits a subtle blue light across the surface of the comfortably warm water. I felt as though I was about to submerge myself into a mystical pool, which I hoped would bestow its magical powers upon me. Laying back in the water I switched off the internal light. Above me hundreds of LED lights twinkled like stars and after a few moments, I closed my eyes. Apparently everyone's experience of floating varies, mine was incredible. I felt weightless and free, but also supported. After a while the water didn't feel like water anymore – it was akin to a much denser liquid, like mercury. I focused on my breathing, as I do when meditating and enjoyed the combination of being present and zoning in and out in such unusual surroundings. You would suppose that 45 minutes in a floatation tank would be quite enough relaxation for one day, but no, Emma had other plans for me. Swathed in a luxurious bath robe I entered an adjacent sweetsmelling room and was greeted by possibly the calmest person I have ever met. Sara is a masseuse and energy therapist (I also suspect she may be an undercover angel). I spent 45 minutes being expertly manipulated, until my achy bits were no longer achy. I practically slid off the massage table into a heap of happiness when it was over. Sara's massage technique is a combination of various modalities from around the globe, that include Therapeutic, Deep tissue, Swedish, Shiatsu, Acupressure, Reflexology, Maori Healing, Raynor, Indian head, Osteopathy and Cranio Sacral therapy. The energy therapist aspect of her skill set allows her to work intuitively and holistically. Meaning that the massage is not performed routinely, but tailored to each client. I would highly recommend that you try these therapies for yourself, or indeed treat a loved one. The cabin floatation tank is, as I mentioned previously, large enough to accommodate two, so couples floating sessions are also available. Emma and her team are consummate professionals, who made me feel very welcome and comfortable. I will definitely be repeating the experience!

aving absolutely no idea what to expect prior to my date with a floatation tank, like all good journalists, I did my research. The benefits are bountiful. Floating mimics the perfect conditions experienced in the womb, making it a profoundly relaxing environment. Not only that, The Dead Sea salt used in the water has natural healing properties. The physical and mental health benefits include: A reduction in stress hormones, pain and tension are alleviated and the release of beneficial endorphins are stimulated, all of which contribute to the rejuvenation of mind and body. Suffice to say, I was looking forward to visiting Cocoon Healing Arts Centre. Feeling the excesses of the Easter weekend, I arrived at Cocoon slightly hungover and was welcomed by the lovely owner, Emma, who immediately put me at ease. She explained very concisely what was going to happen, handed me a warm, fluffy towel, then whisked me downstairs. The floatation area is a beautifully designed oasis of calm, to which my stress level reacted accordingly. As a first time ‘floater’, she advised that I use the cabin tank, which is eight feet long and eight feet wide. It can comfortably hold two people, so no danger of claustrophobia. The tank

HEAVEN SENT > Yvonne Coomber’s solo show – Paradise
A
RT5 Gallery is delighted to announce Paradise, a solo exhibition of work by soughtafter Devonbased artist Yvonne Coomber! This highlyanticipated annual event is the perfect introduction to spring, showcasing an exclusive new collection of the artist’s signature glittering floral paintings, alongside her dreamy landscapes and an exciting new collection of designer cushions. After gaining a degree in Philosophy and Literature at Brighton University, Yvonne went on to study Fine Art in Sussex, broadening her artistic ability and immersion into the world of painting. Over the last decade, she has established herself as a highly collectable artist, with her paintings becoming instantly recognisable worldwide. Yvonne’s love of nature and the English countryside deeply influences her work, often painting in the depths of the Devonshire meadows to draw immediate inspiration from the picturesque surroundings. She captures the chaotic yet harmonious energy within nature, whilst bringing warmth and joy to the canvas. Yvonne beautifully blends various materials
to create layer upon layer of tactile texture, adding another dimension to her captivating paintings. The glitter, reminiscent of early morning dew, the vibrant colours conjuring the kaleidoscopic palette of the countryside, and the delicate scattering of flowers come together organically in her unique artistic vision. Gallery manager Melissa Luckhurst remarks: “We’re delighted to be hosting an annual solo exhibition of acclaimed artist Yvonne Coomber, after the remarkable successes of her previous solo shows in Sussex with us. Her paintings are increasingly sought after, and we’re proud to have been the foremost exhibitor of Yvonne’s work in the South for the past decade.” Visit this exclusive exhibition and lose yourself in Yvonne’s charming vision of nature as a joyful meadow where dreams unfold! D
S
uring those weeks when there seems to be a hideous tragedy somewhere in the world every day, there’s one group of people who make me feel safer than anyone else. Is it our overstretched security services? The warm embrace of my family? No. It is in fact the people who get cross with you on Facebook for saying the wrong thing. Seriously, thank GOD for those people. How else would I be able to process a significant loss of life only a few hundred miles away from me without someone calling me ‘Eurocentric’? Every decent human being knows that all lives when lost are tragic, no matter where (on this frankly tiny planet) the atrocity occurred. So, if you miss the chance to acknowledge one single incident, the only explanation must be that you’re selfish and callous, only caring about people who look like you. And let’s face it, it’s true. Grief is a famously uncomplicated emotion, so when you do it, you’d better get it right. Either make sure you are seen to be caring about everything equally, or admit you’re a scumbag and only ever care about one thing at a time. There can be NO inbetween. That’s what The Daily Mail did when David Bowie died. Ten page tribute spreads about how he changed the country. Then, Terry Wogan died, and The Mail decided they must now take it all back, saying Terry changed Britain in a way Bowie never could. I was dangerously close to being sad about both of them before they did that, but thankfully I came to my senses, made a bonfire of all Bowie’s records and spent the rest of the day weeping to Eurovision repeats. Similarly, I can often be found infiltrating funerals and screaming “WELL I DON’T HEAR ANY OF YOU TALKING ABOUT MY GRANDAD!” Heaven forbid people are allowed to deal with things in their own way without strangers telling them what to be sad about. That would be anarchy!

o there I am, standing in my stocking feet being gently frisked by a rather handsome young man. Frankly it's the kind of service one would happily pay for, and I tell him so which makes him blush – but also smile. I might be 60, but I can still play the charm card. I digress, there I am in Stansted airport security being checked out before flying here to La Rochelle. Given the terrible recent terrorist atrocities it's a small inconvenience and one that I am happy to see in place. Around me though are people who are whining at having to take off their shoes and belts in the interests of safety. No doubt they are gagging to get to the serpentine shopping experience that lies ahead. Some clever retail guru has devised a winding shopping hell that drags me past a whole heap of goods that I neither need nor want, and given that our journey here was delayed, I have not the time nor the patience to be accosted by retail assistants waving scent testing sticks at me as our scheduled departure looms dangerously nearer. We get our flight and before long I am sitting in a very smart house on the Isle de Ré just off La Rochelle. It is tranquil and pretty and I relax. Then I turn on my iPad and see the news of a suicide bomb in Lahore and I see just how lucky I am to be here and safe. Brussels, Paris, New York – massive media attention. But what of the rest of the world, the terrorist actions that we fail to report or pay due attention to. It's about time we got real. This evil is everywhere, but we are peripheral damage and not the core of this terrible world problem.

P
eople in Brighton are being challenged to ‘make a splash and raise some cash’ by taking the plunge on a gigantic water slide for Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens. The charity’s new SlideRider event will make its debut in Preston Park, on Saturday 16 April, alongside the Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens Mini Mile races, part of the Brighton Marathon Weekend. Families, friends and funlovers are being asked to buy a ticket to splash and speed their way headfirst down a 125m inflatable water slide to help beat children’s cancers sooner. They’re being encouraged to sign up now and raise vital funds in sponsorship, which will support Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens in its mission to find cures and kinder treatments for young people facing cancer.
“ Every year,

The disease is the leading cause of death in under 15s in the UK, taking the lives of around 240 children each year. Cancer Research UK event manager, Jenny Ainsworth, said: “We’re delighted to bring our SlideRider event to Brighton. It’s such a fun way to help a great cause, so we hope local thrill seekers will embrace this exhilarating new challenge and make a splash in the fight against children’s cancers. “Every year, around 210 youngsters are diagnosed with the disease in the South East. That’s why we need as many people as possible to whizz down our water slide. By raising all important funds, they can help our scientists accelerate research to find better and kinder treatments. “Places are limited, so we’re urging families and big kids alike to book SlideRider right now.” Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, Cancer Research UK is helping to transform the outlook for children with cancer. Around threequarters of children with cancer now survive their disease beyond ten years compared with more than a third in the 1970s. SlideRider in Preston Park will be open from 11am6pm on Saturday 16 April. Sliders must be aged eight or over and taller than 131cm. To find out more and sign up please visit cruk.org/sliderider

ineties pop sensation Kavana is in Brighton to launch a brand new, six week song writing course, aptly named: ‘The Talent Workshop.’ Latest 7 caught up with him for a quick chat. Tell me everything about The Talent Workshop: The talent workshops will begin with a six week course on songwriting where we will work along side anyone that has an interest in writing songs, be it for themselves or for a loved one! The idea came about after I’d been on a course myself with other songwriters and after having such a great experience, I had the idea that this opportunity should be available to everyone, not just people in the industry. I’ve been working on a new record with artist Jack Bennets, who started out writing songs in his bedroom and now is close to a signing a record deal, so obviously he was the perfect choice to teach with me. Are you looking forward to being in Brighton? I love Brighton! It holds some great memories for me. I came here in the late ‘90s as part of the 'Smash Hits Roadshow' with the likes of All Saints, Boyzone and the Backstreet Boys! It was so cool to come full circle again a couple years ago when I did 'The Big Reunion' concert. It really was a big reunion itself seeing all the fans who followed me the first time round all grown up! I also love the culture and arts in Brighton, hence why we thought it would be a great place to do this. The only thing I’m not keen on are the seagulls! Are you going to Brighton Pride? Funnily enough Brighton Pride is one of the few Prides I’ve never performed at! I did Manchester Pride last year in front of thousands which was a blast. Pride is so important and I always love taking part. Twitter @TalentWorkshops, TheTalentworkshops@gmail.com 07809 251 394, ACT, Hove, BN3 2DJ

arning: The following review comes from la belle France, readers who prefer me only to write about local restaurants should turn immediately to the next page. I'm joking of course as I know that Latest readers are sophisticated world citizens who like to know where to dine should they happen to be, well this time on the lovely Île de Ré. Last night Mrs F and I drifted through the pretty port of St Martin on the Île de Ré to her favourite restaurant which is a very busy harbour side bistro. Inside the place is rammed and it's only just 7pm. But Mrs F is known to the staff and we are promised a good table very soon. We stand at the bar and have a drink. The place is full of locals, many characters, and the buzz is tangible. It's the sort of place that you know will be fun, even if the food is merely adequate. That said Mrs F know me well enough and loves good food enough herself to not take me to somewhere that is merely adequate. The menu is simple and there is a blackboard with some very tempting daily specials but Mrs F has built up the cote de boeuf to the point that there is simply no choice. She also says that we will not need a first course, and my word how right she is. We order the steak asking that one end is bloody for me and the other end not bloody for her, her mad decision but as the locals here would say: “c'est la vie”. We order a bottle of chablis premier cru, delicious, and after a sensible time a wire stand
arrives to support our beef, then two huge plates piled with amazingly good chips and salad. In the UK their single portion of chips would be served as enough for two but not here. Finally our waitress Holly, Irish and as divine as the wine, brings on the meat. Well it was as good a steak as I ever expect to eat, I cannot imagine how it could be surpassed for both flavour and tenderness. Mrs F merrily ate her way across her less bloody half, although true to French ways it is pretty rare. My half is perfection, truly rare but also properly cooked. At the next table two men are dining and one of them has the same steak as we have – but eats it all himself! Cochon!!! It takes us about 45 minutes to eat the lot, which we did. It was irresistibly good and very satisfying, which may make the next bit seem a little greedy. Yes we had a pudding, we shared a walnut tart and yes we drank some more, a glass of sweet wine. Enough I hear you say, but no, we went on and shared a platter of great cheese and another glass of wine each. Then we wibbled and wobbled home to Galathée. The steak by the way cost 49 euros for two, brilliant value. The Île de Ré has captured my heart, and the next day I eat oysters and steak tartare, surely this is heaven? It's a bard life

T
his year marks the 400th anniversary of the death of one William Shakespeare, yes that one, 154 sonnets, 37 plays, world famous… So expect to see a barrage of the bard on our TVs and stages from April onward. In the Brighton Festival Tim Crouch and Spymonkey will be giving us all of the deaths, including that of a fly. You can dig for Shakespeare in a promenade event at Roedale allotments and The Globe Theatre on tour will be giving their Two Gentlemen Of Verona at the Brighton Open Air Theatre, a tip of an iceberg of Shakespearian fever. Before that though there is an opportunity to catch two of his most celebrated plays at The Old Market produced and performed by Brighton's Academy of Creative Training. This week you can see A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The course of true love never did run smooth, Hermia loves Lysander and Helena loves Demetrius but Demetrius is about to marry Hermia... the Duke tries to force the marriage and so the entangled lovers flee to the

And you thought Eastenders was complicated. The production is directed by the highly esteemed John Link who has over 45 years’ experience as a distinguished theatre director both here and abroad. This is followed by Twelfth Night. If music be the food of love, play on... Yes, that one. Shipwrecked twins land on the exotic isle of Ilyria, each believing the other has drowned. Disguise, deception, unrequited love, folly and confusion set the scene for this hilarious comedy of mischief, madness and infatuation. This is directed by the celebrated actor and director, Sian Webber. chaikovsky’s chamber music is full, rich, and technically dazzling. This soulful and vigorous suite of movements were set loose in the sundrenched high ceilings of the Corn Exchange, the scene for a decadent ‘Strings Attached’ coffee concert. The Heath Quartet are known for their dynamism, and the musicianship was very expressive and engaging, but so were the taut and swaying bodies of the performers dancing in slow motion to their bowing arms. At times the whole body was a bow. Beautiful and very moving. Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome, 27 March 2016 Enna Andrews ★★★★★

> Aldous Harding – The beguiling nufolk singer
F
rom the timeless folk sound of the beautifully intransigent ‘Stop Your Tears’ to the fiddle infused ‘Hunter’, and the utterly hypnotising ‘Two Bitten Heart’s, New Zealander Aldous Harding's music is perhaps best described as gothicfolk, full of haunting prosetales that speak of tenaciousness in the face of bloody reality. And to watch her on stage is to be witness to an artist totally lost in the sound and stories, zoning out as it were, bewitching audiences in the process. Although sometimes reticent to talk about the meanings behind her songs, she does say: “These things are difficult for me because sometimes I feel comfortable to discuss it and other times I don’t. My feeling now is it isn’t really anyone’s business where it comes from. Would I ask somebody if they liked a particular song because they themselves fantasise about drowning themselves or their babies (referencing songs form her debut, selftitled album of last year)?" Influenced by her folk singing mother, Lorina – with whom she cowrote and sang from an early age – the New Zealand born and raised, but now Australian based artist, has also been strongly influenced by the likes of Nick Drake, Neil Young and old school folkies, in developing a fresh take on folkacoustica, imbuing her songs with a magicalrealism that often verges on the dark and tragic, but rooted in her personal life, such as on Two Bitten Hearts: “I wrote it about my boyfriend at the time. I was so worried he would leave because I was so spooked and irrational at that time. It was sort of a lullaby to trick him into thinking I was an angel." Welcome, the dark angel. > Innovative dance, music, digital art... and you can bring the kids
C
rossover appeal and arts reaching a wider audience are causes that I’m always keen to champion. To that end, Digitopia (Tom Dale Company in partnership with MOKO Dance) is a lovely proposition, wherein urban contemporary dance, electronic music and digital art are merged in a performance suitable for children and adults alike. The concept of the piece revolves around Dotty and her friend Hex, who starts out as a simple two dimensional line. With some effort however he learns to bend, multiply and even pop into three dimensions. Dotty then follows Hex into a digital world that’s full of surprises. Live dance and digital technology creates a world that defies the rules of gravity and physics: straight lines curve, sound is seen. It’s intriuging to wonder how the Digitopia troupe can accomplish such physical feats which sound impossible. Ambitious! The Family Creative Dance Workshop after the show is fully booked already, but there are also some front of house activities open to all ticket holders before and after the show which sound fantastic. Participants can explore digital elements relating to the themes of the show, and can even create artwork. Reviews have mentioned that Digitopia helps convey a sense of mathematical complexity all around us. You can watch a preview at the link below to get a feel for what the show will be like and the tickets are £10. Seems like a generous price for the opportunity for both young and old ones to be entertained and have one’s understanding of physics and dimensional space enlivened and expanded. Digitopia, The Old Market, Thursday 7 April, 2.30pm, £10, suitable for 5 years and older, theoldmarket.com/shows/digitopia

> It’s all a matter of perspective
I
f an Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman walk into a bar, the first thing you might want to check is where exactly that bar is located. Comedy is all a matter of perspective, and it’s the outsiders and the underdogs that clamour hard for attention with punchlines and satire. This week sees three different perspectives on stage in Sussex. Over in Worthing, globetrotting BBC documentary favourite Rich Hall hosts an evening of ‘music, comedy and gratuitous coloration’. Hall’s plain spoken barbs turn as quickly on his homeland of America as they do on England and Europe, taking his outsider status on a journey every
student wishes they had for their gap year. Back home in Brighton and it’s Treason Show weekend, rounding up all of the big stories of March and spinning them with satirical sketches and songs. Plus, over at Komedia, BBC Radio 4 regular Deborah FrancesWhite regales us with stories of her own life. Perspective. It’s a funny old thing. That’s why we had to create a special section ‘Studios, etc.’ in our new book Art in Brighton 2016 for arty enterprises such as the creative partnership ‘Sugg & Davidson’. If you think that sounds like a vaudeville act, you are not far wrong. Local artist Amanda Davidson first encountered art historian Philip Sugg in 2012, when he walked into her Rottingdean art shop to purchase a pen and enquire if she knew someone he might collaborate within the world of puppet theatre. Without hesitation, Amanda volunteered herself. Since then Sugg & Davidson has created
