erianne and Billy first met at the tender age of seven. Back then they spent their days making clay Ninja Turtles and played in a treehouse at the bottom of Billy’s Nan’s garden. He had a crush on her even then, but when he declared his feelings, in true sevenyearold style she ran away! Sadly Ceri’s family left the area and didn’t return for many years, she revealed: “I found Billy again

on Facebook and asked if he remembered me and the Ninja Turtles. We arranged to meet up (which I was very

> Mark and his beloved Joanna atest 7 spotted Mark Davies banging out some upbeat tunes on his mobile piano on the streets of Brighton this week. He told us: “My piano is easy to set up and move around and can easily be amplified for larger crowds and spaces. Have a look at my gig list to find out where I can be seen and heard. I am based in Sussex and work mainly in the South East and London area but can and do travel further afield, so no matter where you are, if you are looking for some great music on a real piano, get in touch!”

y little sister asked me, the other day, how I had got to a place where I was happy living on my own. This is not to say that I presented myself as the allknowing Yoda of solo survival, but I have been quite gleefully vocal with her about how much fun it is to sing a song about dinner, whilst cooking the very same dinner. Sausages lend themselves to a lot of Beatles tunes – just saying. Anyway, I went away and gave it a thunk. A week later and we were talking on the phone and I told her my conclusions. Chiefly, I pontificated, it’s down to community. She lives in London and I’m in Brighton and as such I am ideally located to be able to pop out almost anytime at all and find something to do and probably someone to do it with. I have cinema friends that can separate by film genre. A swathe of pals to revel in watching comedy, music or just simply the sea with – so that when I go home and close the door it’s a simple luxury that I love every time. Alone without being lonely. It’s a knack. And one I can thank this city for serving up to me. LATEST 7 | 5

OF MICE AND MEN > The masterpiece of modern American drama visits Theatre Royal Brighton

S

et in America during the Great Depression, this classic play tells the story of George and Lennie, two migrant farm workers who go in search of new beginnings, in the hope of attaining their shared dream: of putting together enough money to buy a small piece of land and building a home. After a long and exhausting journey, the pair arrive at a farm in California where they seek work. But they are no strangers to trouble and soon find themselves reeling from the fall out of an innocent misunderstanding which spirals out of control and leaves the two men, bound

together by friendship, facing an earth shattering climax. The cast includes Dudley Sutton (Lovejoy, Entertaining Mr Sloane, A Whistle in the Dark) as Candy. Asked about the relevance of the play for modern audiences, Dudley commented: “It has so many extraordinary resonances. It’s about the haves and have nots and the suppression of the people by the big

agriculture companies. “This play is set in the late ‘20s and there were union strikes that had to be broken up with shotguns. You got Woody Guthrie and all those

great protest songs that came out of that time. It’s as relevant today as it ever was. It’s an intensely moral play in the best sense of the word”.

ince Brighton Chicken Run started in 2013 it has raised about £8,000 for 15 charities. Organiser James Maconald is hoping that this year’s event will raise considerably more. He is also hoping that this year’s event might manage to set an unofficial World Record for the most people running around dressed as chickens. To his knowledge no such record presently exists but he has the goal of 200 chicken runners as the target. There are a number of lovely supportive event partners who all do their bit to help make the day possible.

P

eople in Brighton are being challenged to ‘make a splash and raise some cash’ by taking the plunge on a gigantic water slide for Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens. The charity’s new SlideRider event will make its debut in Preston Park, on Saturday 16 April, alongside the Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens Mini Mile races, part of the Brighton Marathon Weekend. Families, friends and funlovers are being asked to buy a ticket to splash and speed their way headfirst down a 125m inflatable water slide to help beat children’s cancers sooner. They’re being encouraged to sign up now and raise vital funds in sponsorship, which will support Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens in its mission to find cures and kinder treatments for young people facing cancer.

The disease is the leading cause of death in under 15s in the UK, taking the lives of around 240 children each year. Cancer Research UK event manager, Jenny Ainsworth, said: “We’re delighted to bring our SlideRider event to Brighton. It’s such a fun way to help a great cause, so we hope local thrill seekers will embrace this exhilarating new challenge and make a splash in the fight against children’s cancers. “Every year, around 210 youngsters are diagnosed with the disease in the South East. That’s why we need as many people as possible to whizz down our water slide. By raising all important funds, they can help our scientists accelerate research to find better and kinder treatments. “Places are limited, so we’re urging families and big kids alike to book SlideRider right now.” Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, Cancer Research UK is helping to transform the outlook for children with cancer. Around threequarters of children with cancer now survive their disease beyond ten years compared with more than a third in the 1970s. SlideRider in Preston Park will be open from 11am6pm on Saturday 16 April. Sliders must be aged eight or over and taller than 131cm. To find out more and sign up please visit cruk.org/sliderider

o this is what you have all been waiting for. The answer to the critical question that I had been wondering for years after watching Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake – how do you get from being mates to spending the night? Well it started off the same way as most flings do. I got laryngitis from kissing him at a gaybar. A week later when all my colleagues figured out our connection and I’d finished all the ice cream we then started to hang out as friends while he sorted out his relationship or didn’t. I would just chill at his, watch movies and occasionally go to the pub like you would do with any of your friends. That was until one Friday night when it all changed. That night we joined the rest of the crew at the local drinking hole for the weekly catch up. Peyton and I couldn’t really afford the Brighton beer prices – which is not completely unheard of. When I went to get a free beer I’d grabbed a coupon for, he said: “I can’t really stay out much longer, do you wanna head to mine? I have a bottle of vodka and we could get some mixer.” Feeling the pinch myself it wasn’t too hard to convince me to leave after I had downed my pint. I said my goodbyes and left. Halfway to his I checked my phone and read a text that said: “Don’t forget to use protection.” Taking that as some weird joke I shrugged it off. But after two films and half a bottle of booze, I couldn’t believe my friend saw it coming and I had no clue. I mean, it’s not like me to just ditch my friends for a guy. Most of my friends are guys and I’m usually the embarrassing one still on the dancefloor. Either I’m growing up or I am clearly more attracted to Peyton than I thought. Then again I still freaked out in the morning when I remembered what had happened.

atchers of Latest TV, (and if you're not one then why not?) will have seen that I have started presenting a new property show called Latest Homes Live ‘I Want To Live Here!’ which airs every Tuesday at 1pm and then is repeated throughout the week. It may seem a long way from my usual stuff, you know, food, theatre, opera, behaving badly… I jest. The truth is that for the last 15 years I have written a huge amount of articles and features for Latest Homes. I wouldn't ever claim to be a property expert, but I do have a wealth of knowledge and I have always expressed my opinions about Brighton & Hove's property scene. My opinions on the whole have been positive and enthusiastic – as the show says, "I want to live here" and I really do. I like the city for all its diverse qualities. I like the sophistication and I like its saucy reputation. I like the history and I like its modernity too, there is so much to love about this place that I cannot imagine living anywhere else, well maybe if pushed I could live in Vancouver or Sydney, but that's not likely to happen. The one thing that does sadden me about the city though is its unwillingness, in certain quarters, to embrace change. And nothing divides the city more than the subject of new development. How sad it is that when someone proposes an exciting new development like the Frank Gehry replacement of the outdated King Alfred, the naysayers come out in force and it is squashed before it even leaves the drawing board. Now people are complaining about the British Airways i360. It's strikingly modern and technologically exciting and it has driven the regeneration of a huge swathe of our seafront. It's here and I love it. I say that the yeasayers need to raise there voices too and that we all need to embrace change.

t is very rare that I have a Saturday night off, but on Saturday 3rd of April it was one of those rare nights. As luck would have it, my friend Hazel O'Connor was going to be in Brighton doing a show at The Old Market. Many of you will remember Hazel O'Connor from the ‘80s. Hazel and I have been friends for many years and I managed to ask her a few questions. Have you ever played at the Old Market before? No I haven't. I am very excited to be playing there tonight. I love the promoters. It’s 'An Evening with Hazel O'Connor' but I share the stage with Clare Hurst on sax, (Bellestars and Bowie) and Sarah Fisher on keyboards. (Eurythmics).

“ You have to seize the day ”

How long have you been touring together for? It’s seven, nearly eight years. I always wanted to do something Jazzy with the girls and I was always putting it off, then my Mum got diagnosed with terminal cancer and I realised you can’t put things off. You have to seize the day, 'carpe diem' or it will be too late and so I rang the girls and we started work'. What’s your favourite memory of gigging in Brighton? It was about 16 years ago at the Komedia when I did the 'Beyond Breaking Glass' tour with Cormac De Barra. Herby Flowers had told Marina (who started the Komedia) to give us a chance and she did. It was a great night! What’s next for you? I am filming next week for a movie, it’s called 'Hound'. Toyah and Gary Shail are in it too! I sing a Ray Charles song, so I got Sarah and Clare who are on tour with me in it as well. Charmaine Davies is an actress/stand up comedian and presenter on Trickstar FM. > 1847 – the new vegetarian in town

I

'm always amazed when I hear people brand Brighton and Hove as a city of vegetarians. I have lived here 30 years now and have failed to see the place as nut roast central. Far from it in fact, and especially now with the rise of exciting chefs championing local and seasonal produce. That said the city does boast a few restaurants that create astonishingly good food that just happens to be vegetarian and some who, whilst not being solely vegetarian, create meat and fish and even dairy free dishes that would thrill the strictest veggies and vegans. I think you will know them so I will not namecheck them this week as I want to talk about a new vegetarian venue in town. Open only a few months, 1847 is an interesting place that has taken over a very smart venue in Church Road that has had a chequered past. By which I mean that as an eatery it has repeatedly failed. Oh there have been a few exceptions but they have been short lived – so let's hope that this time they have got the concept and the cooking right. I went for lunch with Mrs G de V and Mr M, two of my food cohorts one of whom is a pretty strict vegetarian and the other a man who does not like to be overfaced by meat. I'm an omnivore, I eat pretty much anything for except for pineapple. Mr M started with a mushroom pate which he really enjoyed. I have to say it looked very

@latestandrew

good and the presentation throughout was very nice indeed. Mrs G de V had a pumpkin and kale salad that looked equally good and was declared very tasty with huge amounts of soft cheese that I envied. My scotch egg starter was okay, it looked great, the egg was impressively runny but the barley outer part was a big dry and the barley risotto beneath was pretty much the same, in fact I think it was the same. I was far more impressed by my main of fried halloumi with a delicious lemon curd dressing and basil infused peas. The portion was just right, the dressing a good balance of bitter and sharp and the peas were inspired, far better than peas with mint. The chips, three times cooked were okay, a little soggy and disappointing so I left them pretty much untouched. Mrs G de V chose the beetroot bourguignon, an earthy take on a classic beef dish that looked excellent and put a big smile on her face. Mr M had a second starter of pakora and loved them, I looked on with envy. But then so did he when Mrs G de V and I tucked into a delicious deconstructed chestnut pie, we both loved that. Early days for the newest branch of this small national chain, plenty of promise and good to see a new vegetarian choice for the city. 1847, North Road, Brighton, BN1 1YW 01273 677776 www.By1847.com

Musical magic

> Stunning new musicals at Chichester Festival Theatre

C

hichester Festival Theatre remains at the forefront of British musical theatre with another four prestigious Olivier awards, this time for their stunning revival of Gypsy which went on to the West End to further acclaim after its stunning festival season. It is a pattern that repeats year on year and CFT are now seen as one of the premier producing houses in this field. This season will see a new musical based on Travels With My Aunt, the novel by Graham Greene. Retired bank manager Henry Pulling is happy alone with his dahlias until he meets his decidedly bohemian Aunt Augusta who, having rattled the family skeletons, persuades the reluctant Henry to flee to Europe. Based on Graham Greene’s celebrated novel, this new musical was adapted by Emmy Award winning writers Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman and features a score by the Olivier Award winning team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, all of whom previously collaborated on the musical Betty Blue Eyes. Patricia Hodge plays Aunt Augusta. Her long association with Chichester encompasses The Mitford Girls, As You Like It and Calendar Girls; her recent television credits include several

They will also be reviving Half A Sixpence, the musical adaptation of H.G. Wells’s novel Kipps: The Story of a Simple Soul. It is a completely fresh adaptation which reunites bookwriter Julian Fellowes (Oscarwinning screenwriter and creator of Downton Abbey) with George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, the musical team that co creator Cameron Mackintosh first put together to create the hit stage adaptation of Mary Poppins with Disney. Bryan Dick plays Arthur Kipps; his many television appearances include Ernie Wise in the widely praised TV drama Eric and Ernie, Wolf Hall and Capital; his stage credits include Mozart in Amadeus at Sheffield Theatres and The Alchemist at the National Theatre. he plot (as silly and whimsical as a Jackie Magazine feature or agony letter) was filled with laughs and memories of teenage angst. Lori Haley Frost was delightful as best friend Jill, wickedly manipulative in her attempts to get Jackie out and paired off. But it was Janet Dibley who stood out, bringing much needed balance to a show full of camp silliness and making the story stand out as one worth watching. She can sing too but she admirably acted the song, even when the lyrics were trite or silly she gave them a dramatic sense I loved this delicious confection of show and came away singing if not dancing. > Bellowhead Much loved brassfolk band bow out in style

W

ith every Tom, Dick and Harry band reuniting, saturating the gig circuit with cash register nostalgia, it's refreshing to find that there are still bands who like to celebrate the fact they are quitting. Not that it's a dead cert, of course, that they won't ever reform in the future and cash in; but for now, this is the end of the road for the much loved Bellowhead, an 11piece that mix traditional dance tunes, with folk songs and shanties. Not a commercial proposition I hear you say, but Bellowhead have become one of the biggest folk acts of recent times, the secret largely lying in their energetic live shows which involves a great deal of instrumentation and instrument swapping. Conceived by Jon Boden and John Spiers in 2004 whilst sitting in a traffic jam, Bellowhead's 'English world music' took almost everyone by surprise, their third album ‘Hedonism’ the highest selling independent folk album ever released. And as well as being commissioned for the likes of both The Simpsons and The Archers, they've been heavily involved in creating their own Bellowhead ales, and signing to the iconic Island label for their sixth and last album, ‘Revival’, which was their highest album chart placing yet (number 12). But, to go out at the top and on a high is both a brave and brilliant thing to do. Unsurprisingly, it's difficult to keep such a beast on the road, and with the various band members all having their own projects, it’s been remarkable that they have managed to stay together so long, with only two members leaving the band in all their time together. But with founding member Jon Boden deciding to disband the band, I'm sure there will be many a glass raised during this final tour. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Mon 18 April, SOLD OUT

wo wildly different but equally stunning musical options come to town this week. Andy Stott is at Patterns on Wednesday night, playing his murky, beatdriven palette of electronic sound live. Stott is touring before the release of his new album 'Too Many Voices', which is out on 22nd April (album art above). 2014's Faith in Strangers was a fantastic record that went from funereal drones to drum’n’bass blasts and Aphex Twin type keyboards. You can stream new track 'Butterflies' on YouTube now which is a sparse joy to listen to, and the new album is heralded as sounding as ethereal as This Mortal Coil and Dead Can Dance so we should be in similar sonic territory to his masterful earlier work. Saturday night sees the candonowronginmybook London Philharmonic Orchestra playing at the Dome's Concert Hall. BBC Music magazine cover star Miloš Karadaglić has sadly had to pull out due to a muscle strain in his right hand, but thankfully the talented and experienced Craig Ogden is taking his place. Ogden will be performing Rodrigo's 'Fantasia para un gentilhombre', a piece with real crossover appeal featuring slinking guitar lines in a romantic set of dances. Excerpts from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet and De Falla's The Threecornered Hat (Suite No. 2) are also being performed, resulting in a bright programme for a spring Saturday evening. It will be contrast to the atmospherics of Stott earlier in the week, and the two shows are a perfect example of the breadth of musical options in Brighton. Andy Stott, Patterns (formerly Audio), Wed 13 April, 8pm, £12.50, benothing.ticketabc.com/events/andystott London Philharmonic Orchestra, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Sat 16 April, 7.30pm, £10£32.50, brightondome.org/event/7356

DY COMNE ANGLE VICTORIA

> Going for a song

T

his weekend saw the launch of Brightonbased comedy singersongwriter Hannah Brackenbury’s long awaited second album, ‘Jumbled’. She also competed as a finalist in the Musical Comedy Awards in the Udderbelly on London’s South Bank (fingers crossed for her taking the title, but due to print deadlines we just don’t know at time of going to press). It’s looking like being Brackenbury’s year, and ‘Jumbled’ is certainly a most excellent indicator of this.

It’s cheeky from the opening track ‘Country Music Fan’ – embracing good honest innuendo and quick wit, without a weak song amongst the collection. Even the delightfully silly celebration of breasts just makes you laugh, although a favourite is the

cheeky homage to The Sound Of Music. Brackenbury’s humour is strong and warm, and it’s good to hear more of her original material after the runaway YouTube success of her lesbian Taylor Swift send up – ‘Cats Together’, proving that she’s not simply a clever lyricist. She’s an entire comedy songwriter. And she’s got loads of them for us to enjoy. Hannah Brackenbury – Jumbled, The Verdict, Saturday 30 April, 8pm, £5, www.brackers.co.uk

And at Phoenix gallery we’re excited to learn about the upcoming exhibition ‘Technology & the Evolution of the Artist’s Book’. Not the catchiest of titles, perhaps… but it promises a collection of boundary breaking bookwork within a theatrical display space. The show features contemporary artists from across the world who regard the book as an art form. For some, the material and
