LOVED UP > Made in Chelsea’s Binky loves Cupid!

M

ade in Chelsea mum Jane Felstead, visited Raystede recently with her friend Bill for a tour. They were incredibly impressed with the facilities available for the rescued animals and particularly with how happy all the animals actually are. Jane spent some time talking to the staff and commented on their passion and knowledge. Before leaving, she met some of the kennel dogs that are waiting to find homes. Jane posted a photo of one of the dogs, Cupid, online. When daughter

Binky saw the picture, she fell in love and immediately wanted to come and meet him! A few days later Jane returned with Binky to meet Cupid and the other animals. As a result of the visit they are both huge supporters of Raystede, who are now proud to call them ambassadors. Thanks to the celebrity endorsement, Cupid has found a lovely new home, but lots of other animals desperately need your help. Raystede’s first fundraising Gala Dinner is on 7th May.

atest 7 discovered this brilliant post on Facebook. It perfectly illustrates the wonderful community spirit that Brighton is synonymous with, delivered with quirky humour. Let’s hope the owner of said rabbit rescued the poor little guy, we love a happy ending! The post perfectly coincides with the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland, written by fabulous Brightonian, Lewis Carroll. I’m sure he’d be proud that we are taking care of the city’s lost white rabbits!

’m not old, I’m retro. And I’ll explain how that exactly works and isn’t a cry for every antiwrinkle cream known to womankind. I first noticed it when I was a kid. I coveted my mother’s clothes because they were original. The market stalls called it ‘vintage’ but I knew it just meant that the stitching was good enough that it hadn’t fallen apart yet, and the design was classic enough that it held its shape and both my mother and I could get away with wearing it. Although I quickly learnt that in borrowing such marvellous attire I shouldn’t bung her cashmere paisley polo neck in the wash with my Gap jeans. Vintage shrinks, apparently. But it wasn’t long before I was wishing I still had that Alanis Morissette tshirt with tour dates in my wardrobe. It wasn’t exactly ‘old’, I certainly couldn’t flog it as a collectable, but it was retro – a little bit cool, certainly not band uptodate, but wearing its age well. And growing in value with its age. Like me – I hope! So I’m retro. Pleased to meet you. Let’s become vintage together. Shrinkage optional. LATEST 7 | 5

THE FATHER > The most highly acclaimed new play of the last decade comes to Theatre Royal Brighton

T

he Father stars Kenneth Cranham, who took home this year’s Olivier Award for Best Actor for his unforgettable performance. The play attracted a host of five star national reviews and unanimous praise from its two runs in the West End. It is written by one of France’s most celebrated living playwrights Florian Zeller, with a crisp and witty translation by Christopher Hampton. Now 80 years old, Andre was once a tap dancer. He lives with his daughter Anne and her husband Antoine. Or was he an engineer whose daughter Anne lives in London with her new lover, Pierre? The thing is, he is still wearing his pyjamas, and he can’t find his watch. He is starting to wonder if he’s losing control. Author of this intriguing and

compelling drama, Florian Zeller, has been hailed as “one of the hottest literary talents in France” (The Independent). The Father (Le Père) was the recipient of three Molière Awards in 2014, France’s highest theatrical honour, including the Molière for Best New Play. One of the country’s most respected actors, Kenneth Cranham’s numerous credits include An Inspector Calls on Broadway. His many West End stage credits include Entertaining Mr. Sloane, Loot, The Birthday Party and Gaslight. He has performed at London’s Royal Court and the National Theatre on numerous occasions. On television, Cranham played the title role in Shine on Harvey Moon; and his extensive credits range from Merlin, Tess of the d’Urbervilles, The Line of Beauty and Rome, to

Our Mutual Friend, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and El Cid. His film work includes Maleficent, Made in Dagenham, Valkyrie, Hot Fuzz, Layer Cake, Oliver!, Two

Men Went to War, The Boxer, Under Suspicion, Hellbound: Hellraiser II and Chocolat. For his role in The Father, Kenneth won the 2015 Critics Circle Award for Best Actor. Do not miss the opportunity to see this intensely moving but uplifting play during its brief run at Theatre Royal Brighton.

efore I begin, a note of caution. If 350 wordsworth of some of the most twee, millennial idealism ever printed on decent quality GSM paper is not really your bag, then maybe save yourself the bother of reading this. See before I started working, I had no affinity for my generation whatsoever. I thought us a coterie of selfietaking, TOWIEwatching, protein shakechugging, internet porn obsessed idiots, who didn’t know how to put up shelves or change a lightbulb. Recently though, I’ve come round to thinking that despite all these annoying attributes most of us have, we aren’t half getting roundly stuffed when it comes to the old University of Life. Yes the vast majority of us haven't got a war to fight, or a bubonic plague to survive, but show me your average young person right now and I'll show you someone in a constant, unshakable state of panic that things might not turn out alright. We are forever reminded what is expected of us: work for not all that much – you're lucky to even have a job. Save £800 a month for that house you will never even contemplate buying, but before you magic that out of thin air, rent please! If you can't afford to live close to work, spend thousands more pounds relying on privately funded, publicly useless trains. You get plug sockets on them now so stop crying. Honestly, you lot don't know you're born. Except we do, because we've been born into a society that, certainly in the economic sense, rewards entirely the wrong type of behaviour. If you want that promotion, you'd better be pushy about it. You'd better humiliatingly beg for it like the unfit butcher's dog you are. You can't expect us to just notice your hard work and the fact you're actively trying not to be a psychopath towards others. So it seems this column has rather befallen the fate of the previous one – not particularly funny, but it just might be true.

t's confession time. For a few years I was Astral Angi, writing horoscopes in Latest 7. What do you mean, you knew? You could tell that my predictions were bogus, did you not like my declarations of what your astral biscuit was? At least I tried. I'm not a believer to be honest. I never read the stars, I simply do not see any evidence in my life that they bear any connection with my reality. Not that my reality is much to go by you might say – reality, paah! Years ago I worked for Barry Humphreys and Dame Edna. We were in Birmingham doing a radio interview and the DJ asked Edna if she ever felt that she had gone over the top. Edna replied: "Over the top darling? You should ask my art director Andrew, he lives there!" In many ways Edna was right, I do lead a rather extraordinary life and some of my ideas have certainly been over the top. Fortunately for the most part, the people that I have worked with and my friends have embraced that. Learnt to live with the crazy world that is A Kay. A few years after my year with Dame Edna I was charged with the job of designing a book of palm readings of celebrities by a very lovely lady who lived here in Sussex. I drove down and we met to discuss how we would go about presenting the palm prints and creating a cover. I really liked this lady, she was charming and sincere, and despite me not really believing in the whole thing, I was happy to go along with her when she asked to do a reading for me. She took a palm print and said that she would post me the results, yes preinternet days. A few weeks later a large manilla envelope arrived in the post, yes preinternet, and in it a huge document, hand written, page after page of it and all fascinating. I've just found it in a drawer and some of what she saw has proved to be pretty accurate. I may well predict a change in my beliefs.

PEOPLE POWER > Hugh Bonneville returns to the stage at Chichester Festival Theatre this month in An Enemy Of The People. He tells us what drew him to “this passionate, exciting play”. You’ve performed at Chichester previously in The Handyman in 1996. What’s brought you back? The place and the play. I have a real soft spot for Chichester Festival Theatre – I’ve lived in the area most of my life and I’ve seen many productions over the years. I’d never read An Enemy Of The People before Chichester’s Artistic Director, Jonathan Church, sent it to me and it absolutely leapt off the page. It feels incredibly contemporary, with its central theme of the whistleblower’s voice being drowned out by public opinion; one minute he’s a hero, the next a pariah. The project came my way just as I was saying goodbye to Downton Abbey, so the timing was perfect – a ‘no brainer’, as they say.

tunnel vision of what is right ultimately drives him to the edge of sanity. An Enemy of the People opens on 22nd April. How are rehearsals going? It’s twelve years since I’ve been on stage. You access a different part of your brain when working on a TV or film role, because it's such a fragmented process; you rarely shoot scenes in sequence and often find yourself clinging on to the shape of the narrative by your fingernails. So it’s great to be in a theatre rehearsal room again, engaging with the story over a sustained period, gradually uncovering the play’s themes and the characters’ relationships. We have a world class director in Howard Davies, a fabulous cast and creative team, all happily beavering away together to put on this passionate, exciting play.

“ The project came my way just as

I was saying goodbye to Downton Abbey, so the timing was perfect – a ‘no brainer’ ”

You play Dr Stockmann, the ‘whistleblower’ of the play. What attracted you to the role? Dr Stockmann is a fascinating, flawed character. Initially inspiring, his singlemindedness and bristling energy become the very traits that bring about his downfall. He rubs people up the wrong way; he’s impetuous, selfrighteous, and his rigid, LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

s Danny Tenaglia once sang to us all: “Music Is The Answer”. I couldn’t even begin to imagine life without music in the world. I enjoy remembering that I’ve forgotten to play a now old playlist. Immediately on realising that, it’s time to put a new list together! Every time I compile a playlist I feel it’s going to be the soundtrack to my life for the next while. Some things old, some things new and some things bluetoothed. I remember chatting to Robert Owens, vocalist of the 1992 Chicago House Classic, ‘I’ll Be Your Friend’ about Danny Tenaglia’s ‘Music Is The Answer’ at last year’s Brighton Music Conference (BMC). After the interview I jokingly said: “If music is the answer, what is the question?”. He answered gently, sincerely and considerately: “It’s there in the lyrics. Why do we have such problems in life?”. I was humbled after what he had talked about in our interview, and I knew I would end my show with him. ‘I’ll Be Your Friend’ just happens to be the track that Brighton’s own Norman Cook (aka Fat Boy Slim) first heard being mixed at a club inbetween two of the same record. This was when he had his first revelation and finally got what House music was all about. In this week’s show I’ll be reporting from the third BMC in Growing Concerns on Sunday, at 3.30pm, on Latest TV. hen I was a student, I had a part time job in the Entertainment Department at Chessington World of Adventures. I made lots of friends working there and still class many of them as close friends to this very day. One of the people who also worked there that I made friends with, was Dave Benson Phillips. The programme that many will remember him for was the BBC children's TV show ‘Get Your Own Back’, a show where children got the chance to put their teachers/parents in the gunge tank to get their own back! . Last year Dave took 'Get Your Own Back' on the road and went to the Edinburgh festival. This week I caught up with him over a ginger ale or two at Myhotel in Brighton.

“ 27 gunges in 27 days! ”

Are you going back to the Edinburgh Festival this year? The answer is yes. Last year we did 27 gunges in 27 days. We mixed about 3.5 tonnes of gunge. We made a lot of people happy! So we are going to do it again. I can't wait! Who were the most famous people you gunged? It all depends on who you talk to, we had Stephen K. Amos vs Ed Byrne in one game show. It was the Thrilla in Manila for us. So much fun. What else is in the pipeline for you? I'm involved with an ‘80s touring festival called ‘Let’s Rock’. The closest we get to Brighton with the show is Southampton. I am not doing pantomime this year, instead I'll be doing arena tours with a group of CBBC presenters doing a show called 'The Best Ever Christmas'. I can't wait to shout 'Hello Wembley' – I used to be a cleaner there! It will be weird. Charmaine Davies is an actress, stand up comedian and regular presenter on Trickstar FM LATEST 7 | 11

BRIGHTON2PARIS > Mayor’s Charity Cycle Ride Friday 6th – Monday 9th May

F

ollowing on from the successful launch at The Grand Hotel in February, The Brighton2Paris Charity Cycle Ride sponsored by Oakley Property has picked up pace and is gathering more members as they near the start line. The organisations signed up to date include: Lewis & Co Planning, Parks Lettings, Pilbeam Construction, Coffin Mew LLP, Woodhart Construction, Oakley Property, Colin Brace Properties, Handelsbanken, LCE Architects and Robinson Low Francis. Linden Talbot from Coffin Mews, Brighton’s premier solicitors has offered to swap his business attire for a cycling jersey to take part in the weekend event in May. Nick Leavey, Head of Commercial Property at Coffin Mew solicitors said: “We are delighted to contribute towards this high profile charity event. As a firm, we are passionate about promoting Brighton, fostering relations across the region and engaging with major initiatives, particularly for such worthy causes as the Mayor’s charities – including the Argus Appeal, the Martlets Hospice and the Grace Eyre Foundation. In collaboration with Brighton and Hove Property Consortium, supported by The Hyde Group and Colin Brace Properties, we are proud to be associated with and contributing to the Brighton2Paris Mayor’s Charity Cycle Ride 2016.” Accompanying Linden will also be Simon Nicholson from the newly opened office of Handelsbanken on Church Road in Hove and Stephen Cheesman of Robinson Low Francis. Simon Nicholson commented that: “Every one of us taking part in this bike ride are making our living from the construction and property market in the city, either directly or indirectly. I think it's terribly important for us to give something back and the opportunity to cycle to Paris in support of the Mayor's charities was an opportunity too good to miss. All of the charities do fantastic work locally and in the current times find it hard to raise funds. To group together and help them is a fantastic feeling.” Also based on Queens Road in Brighton is RLF whose Managing Partner Stephen Cheesman has decided to take part: “The ethos at RLF is ‘Building Futures’, with the aim that we have a positive impact on the community. We hope to achieve

this by participating in the Brighton2Paris and supporting the Mayor and our city.” Simon Pilbeam of Pilbeam Construction, who have been building Brighton since 1955 said that: “When the Brighton2Paris Charity Bike ride was first mentioned I initially thought ‘what a great adventure’, and an excellent opportunity to have some fun with work colleagues from both our organisation and others in the local industry. However, with the event raising money for local charities across the Brighton & Hove area, it gives Pilbeam Construction a wonderful opportunity to contribute to these fantastic organisations which provide essential services in the area from which this business has built its success over the 60plus years of operation”. > Yer actual French As Kenneth Williams might say…

T

he trouble with spending a few days in France is that I come back with a craving for classic French cooking. Not the fancy, oooh la la stuff aspiring to those much coveted stars, which of course I also like. No, the classic bistro food that I grew to love when I was a student in Paris, and back then the food that I could just about afford. So I was delighted when my old friends H & G invited me to join them for dinner at their New Steine Hotel Bistro. I've been many times before and it became one of my mum and dads’ favourite places to eat in the city, as much for the warm welcome as the delicious food. So with classics in mind I headed to town for what I hoped was going to be a delicious dinner, and I was not to be disappointed. Much as I love modern cuisine, I sometimes crave the comfort of a decent plate of hearty nosh, dishes that have a familiarity. But that familiarity can, as they say, breed contempt. Not here, the young chef delivers the kind of food that puts a smile on your face and a glow in your belly. H & G asked him to prepare for me a selection of appetisers, a nice idea that gave me a broader picture of his talents. I really enjoyed his fish cakes with good freshly made tartare sauce and an excellent salmon tartare. The foie gras was good but he had been a touch heavy handed with the salt, a mistake easily remedied and one that I doubt he will make again. But it was the crab ravioli in clear fish bouillon that really impressed. For my main course I chose the pig's cheeks,

@latestandrew

cooked to falling apart perfection in a rich red wine sauce and served with mash. I love pig's cheeks, or Bath chaps as I know them, and these were good and also served to show H's dedication to using where possible the very best Sussex produce. H had the fish, and that too looked great, but I watched G devour his duck confit and lentils with greedy envy. It's a favourite of mine and it looked oh so good. Next time… For dessert I could not resist a creme brulée, it's a firm favourite and when done in the classic form, not messed with, it can be perfection. This was just that, perfect, just set custard topped with a wafer thin crust of caramelised sugar, tortoiseshell mottled and as crisp as glass. I like it served in a shallow gratin dish too, as you get so much more of that crisp burnt sugar. We drank excellent French red wine from a small but well thought out wine list, probably more than is sensible on a school night and I finished with a double espresso that was piping hot, a rare thing I find. New Steine Hotel Bistro is delightfully traditional, friendly and sensibly priced, you can eat three courses for the same price as a main course in some restaurants. If you choose the special menu and a la carte, it is not much more expensive. Look out also for their art exhibitions and Fringe Festival events this year. Hats off to them and vive la France! A family at war

> Michael Pennington stars as King Lear

I

f you ask most English people what their favourite Shakespeare play is it will probably be one that they studied for A Level at school. I suppose it is a play studied indepth that one will have a deeper understanding of and for me that is King Lear. I love it more than any other. If you are not familiar with it, then do not worry, it's a great, sprawling family drama full of twists and intrigues not unlike those in a modern soap, but dare I say it, better conceived and better written. You may not have seen the play but you may have seen it in part in the final scenes of Ronald Harwood’s excellent play and film ‘The Dresser’. Now, renowned Shakespearean actor Michael Pennington (four time Olivier award nominated) plays the title role in a new production of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy. Director Max Webster leads a creative team including designer Adrian Linford, Olivier award winning lighting designer Natasha Chivers, and composer Matthew Bugg for Royal & Derngate Northampton’s major new production. In Shakespeare’s epic tragedy, an ageing

tyrant’s decision to divide his kingdom tears his family apart, sparks catastrophic civil war and destroys all that he has. Driven from his home, King Lear endures madness and great suffering as he battles a great storm. Yet with madness he finds reason, after betrayal he discovers loyalty and through his suffering a better world emerges. Michael Pennington has played numerous roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company in a career spanning over 50 years, and was co founder of the English Shakespeare Company. Recent notable performances have been as Edgar in Strindberg's ‘The Dance of Death’, at the Gate Theatre, John of Gaunt in ‘Richard II’ (RSC), and as Anthony Blunt in Alan Bennett's ‘Single Spies’ at the Rose Theatre Kingston. He played the role of Lear to great acclaim at the Shakespeare Center New York in 2014. This new production will see Michael play the role in the UK for the first time. Director Max Webster commented: “In the year that marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, it’s thrilling to be directing one of his greatest tragedies, and to be working with Michael, who is one of the most respected Shakespearean actors of our time. I look forward to our talented cast bringing a gripping new interpretation to audiences across the UK.” King Lear, Theatre Royal Brighton, Tue 3 – Sat 7 May, Eves 7.45pm, Thu & Sat mats 2.30pm www.atgtickets.com/brighton 0844 871 7650 (bkg fees apply)

The Coral

M

ost indie bands that take a lengthy hiatus struggle to reintegrate with the changed musical landscape upon their return, but this gig showed this clearly isn’t a problem for The Coral. The band’s musical abilities always did shine brighter than most of their contemporaries, and the tight, polished performance on display here proved this is definitely still the case. The heavier, darker, quasipsychedelic sound from their new album resonated through the whole set, providing a fresh and interesting experience for old fans and new converts alike, and ensuring this rose above the plethora of bland nostalgia trips most “comebacks” have become. > Ellie Ford: excellent harpistsinger about to release debut album

F

lirting on the Brighton scene for a few years now, first with the band Kate, and now with her own band, Ellie Ford only took up the harp a couple of years ago... "I play a pedal or concert harp; the mechanism is controlled by its pedals... It's a pain to get up the stairs, but it's beautiful. "I taught myself... I did cheat though, I did watch some YouTube tutorials. I've never had lessons. I would like to get lessons, but I'm quite stubborn and not very good at being told what to do!" I am a big fan of spontaneity and originality in the arts world, and the best ideas usually come out of people with no formal training. It seems incredible how much she has developed, not only as a harpist, but as a singer, too, alongside the guitar and piano, the instruments that she first grew up with. And with one EP under her belt, there is much anticipation and excitement surrounding the debut album ‘The Other Sun’, a collection of lush yet intimate folkpop songs, topped off by Ford's voice that has hints of the blues within the overall folk tones. Ford and her band of five will be launching the album this month, as well as appearing at a few record stores including Resident Records on 20th April and Union Music Store in Lewes on 16th April, Record Store Day itself. "We're super excited to put it out, it's on vinyl! We have, like, four record players in our house. Genuine record players. It was exciting to listen to the test pressing" she says. Bleach, Friday 22 April, 8.30pm, £5.50

> Postrock quietloudquiet guitar heroes Explosions in the Sky

W

hen I saw Explosions in the Sky about three years ago I was curious as to how their postrock slow burns would lend themselves to a live setting. In my review I voiced these concerns about the structural confines of what I call “crescendo music” but they were thankfully groundless. The gig was kept varied, with moments of shoegaze, ambience and distortion to break up the mood and there were fantastic blasts of noise to stir the senses. I gave the Concorde 2 gig five stars and praised its pounding triumphant finales, so it will be great to see this dynamism and intensity at the Dome. You may well have heard EITS on the soundtrack to the film/TV show Friday Night Lights; their music is certainly cinematic but they have returned to focusing of full albums with the release of ‘The Wilderness’ on 1st April. The album still features their trademark fluid chiming guitars, but other elements feel more chopped up, such as the big DJ Shadow like drumbeat and the musical melange collage introduction on ‘Disintegration Alley’. The music recalls EITS’ guitarist Mark T. Smith's Inventions collaboration with Eluvium, and is a little more reserved than the band’s earlier work. It will be nice to see how they play the more contemplative album live, but they will surely still be producing a melodic, tectonic wall of sound this weekend. This gig is well worth trying out if you’re a fan of instrumental music, or just high quality musicianship in general. You can expect a well constructed, meticulously layered, guitarbased experience from a sensational live act. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Sunday 24 April, £22

> Whoa – we’re halfway there!

A

work in progress is so much more than a hot mess of ideas. It’s pure, unreconstructed shiny gold sticking out of wall, as people who really know what they’re doing (more than your mate who goes up to comics and tells them half a story with the offer, “you can use that in your next show if you like!”) take us on a guided tour of some of the best goldmines in the country. This is better than the jewellers with their polish. This is adventure. With that in mind, it’s a true

joy to see some of the names set to previewing new shows at the Caroline Of Brunswick over the next few months, all at less than a tenner and some at no cost at all. This month welcomes Holly Burn and Jon Richardson, as
