LOVED UP > Katy Perry loves Brighton!
A
ccording to a recent news story Katy Perry is so enamoured with the people of Brighton and Hove, that she intends to move here! She allegedly said: “I’m just tired of the L.A. lifestyle and I feel like at this point in my life, I’d rather just live in a place full of real, genuine people. I’ve been to Brighton & Hove a couple of times over the years and the people there are real. They’re genuine, and yeah every community has its problems, but the people there are
good, decent people and they care about their community. Those are the things I find most important in deciding where to live,” She assured fans: “I’m not retiring, I’m just looking for a change in life and I think I’ve found that in Brighton & Hove.” Katy, you are more than welcome to pop into Latest 7 anytime for a snog and a cup of Rosie Lee! ummer is not here. It is definitely still spring. I say this because we’ve had some warm sunny days of late and they’ve been flippin’ fantastic. I actually dug out the sun tan lotion I keep in the side of my rucksack in case I’m caught in an emergency – yes, I was a Brownie! – and started tentatively rubbing it all over my face the other day. You know in that way that means you’re trying to memorise exactly where you’ve put it so that you can avoid walking around with a glop of un rubbedin lotion for 30 minutes. I even started yawning in the afternoon, which tends to imply just a touch too much time in the sun. But I say again – it’s not summer, it’s still spring. The reason I’m so emphatic is that we tend to have a habit of enjoying a couple of days of sunshine, and then when the inevitable torrential rain follows it there’s an uproar proclaiming that ‘summer’s over! We’ve missed it!’. Don’t you worry your pretty little heads. This was just daffodilbaiting. The sun will come back when summer actually arrives. And I shall be right on the beach welcoming it to Brighton. LATEST 7 | 5

SHOPPING OLIVIA EVANS
> How to rebuild your summer wardrobe
S
ummer is fast approaching and its finally time to ditch the knitwear! Shopping for new pieces for your wardrobe can be daunting, before you head out to the shops to get stuck into the new trends my suggestion is to go through your wardrobe and seek out what you need. Make a list of what you’re lacking or coveting and stick to it. Try to avoid getting distracted by THAT bag that’s identical to the one you have at home that’s now on sale. Although this can be difficult, this will eliminate impulse buys that will eventually gather dust in your wardrobe. To avoid that dreaded ‘I have nothing to wear’ scenario every morning, here are my five key pieces you should invest in this summer to get the most out of your money. A Floppy Hat A hat is a great piece to invest in during the warmer months. Not only does it protect you from the rays, it can completely transform an outfit with little effort. Go for a neutral tone to increase versatility or make a statement with a bold colour or print. Look out for straw or lighter tones for the warmer months. The Maxi Dress Maxi dresses are a fail safe piece in the summer. By adding accessories such as a statement necklace you can take it from day to night. If you’re petite go for an off the shoulder cut, If you’re curvy go for a cut that accentuates your waist or simply add a belt. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
The Kimono Kimonos are great for summer and come in a huge variation of lengths, colours and prints. Look out for details such as fringing or embellishment to add interest or texture to an outfit. The Denim Jacket Denim is classic and will take you through the seasons if you choose right. A lightweight jacket is essential for those breezy English summer evenings. Layer over your maxi and add a hat for a city chic look, or pair with your favourite T shirt and shorts for a casual everyday look. Culottes The 2 for 1 Item Culottes give the illusion that you’re wearing a skirt with the comfort of trousers, no longer will you fear a Marilyn Monroe moment! Pair with a simple cami top and sandals for a bohemian vibe and reach for your favourite pair of heels for an evening look. With these five items you will be able to enjoy that summer BBQ or a day down the beach in style! Glass of Pimm’s anyone?… Shop the Look 1. Accessorize straw hat, £22 2. ARTISTS OPEN HOUSES > Artists Open Houses: Festival of Dreams!
T
his May the Artists Open Houses (AOH) festival runs for five weekends, starting on Bank Holiday Saturday 30th April and closing on Bank Holiday Monday 30th May. The 2016 Open Houses festival is bigger and better than ever, with almost 200 venues stretching across the city, from Portslade to Rottingdean and out into the villages of Ditchling, South Heighton, Hamsey and beyond. The Open Houses Festival is inclusive to all, having something for everyone and this May includes five schools, several churches and a number of wellbeing and daycentres, as well as well over 100 artists’ homes and studios. Sixty new venues are taking part the this year, including Dreamliner Arts, an immersive mini cinema and popup gallery inside a Talbot motor home, parked up in a street near Brighton station and a Kemptown house with an interactive art installation, involving electrician’s tape! As well as painting, jewellery, textiles, ceramics, photography, installation and much, much more, many houses offer handson workshops and activities to inspire your creativity – both for adults and for kids. Others offer very tempting homemade tea and cake! Throughout the festival, Artists Open Houses Headline Sponsors, ARCHangels Architects, are offering a children’s ‘Design Your Dream Home’ competition, to help get kids motivated to travel the trails with you. The competition encourages kids to bring their ideas together and create a Dream Home, via any medium they choose. Look out for the purple AaA dots beside one house in each trail in the AOH brochure. Children can use any method, drawing, 8 | LATEST 7
painting, model making or photography to bring their Dream Home to life, with entries welcomed from children aged between 4 and 16. Two lucky winners will be awarded a Lego Building Set or a Lego Architecture Set. And don't forget to vote for your favourite Open House! The Best Open House Award is supported by Artists Open Houses’ media partners, Latest Homes and TV. From the start of the festival, visit the Open Houses then simply place an online vote (via the AOH website) for the house that you believe best captures the spirit of the Artists Open Houses – deadline for voting: Monday 23rd May. Look out for Artists Open Houses brochures around the city – or visit the Four Festivals’ info desk at Brighton Station every weekend from now until the end of the festival. Or pick up a brochure from any Open House venue from the start of the festival. For more information visit: www.aoh.org.uk

ALWAYS BE CLOSING > Glengarry Glen Ross comes to the Rialto, curiously sponsored by Elliotts Estate Agents Elliotts' Brian Huggins is disappointed with the actors' sales ethics
E
state agents sometimes get a bad rap. Yes, it’s true. Sympathy for them is often a little thin on the ground. And if you are prone to believing the horror stories of estate agents, David Mamet’s witty play Glengarry Glen Ross will do nothing to dispel this viewpoint. The play is set in a Chicago real estate office around 30 years ago. This was the pre internet and premobile phone era, where to sell a property you just needed a landline phone and to go out to prospective clients. Or, in the case of the agents portrayed here, not so much clients… more gullible, hapless victims. Mamet’s play, which won a Pulitzer prize, was wonderfully adapted for the big screen and starred, amongst others, Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey & Jack Lemmon. Glengarry Glen Ross is revived on stage at this year’s 10 | LATEST 7
“ Or in the case

Brighton Fringe, at The Rialto Theatre, by Brighton company Pretty Villain Productions. Glengarry Glen Ross depicts the ruthlessness and desperation of salesmen working in a cutthroat industry, for whom the mention of the word ‘ethics’ would see them reaching for a dictionary, probably with a furrowed brow. We witness them lie, steal, bribe and cheat, seemingly in a routine
manner. Mamet’s inspiration for the play emanated from his younger days, during which he worked in a real estate agency. The dubious practices, so keenly observed in Glengarry Glen Ross, are indefensible. Is it all dark though? According to the director, Roger Kay, “it’s fascinating to see what desperation will drive otherwise ordinary people to
do. The play finds humanity and humour, while containing the sharp, intelligent, dialogue synonymous with Mamet, one of the great playwrights of the 20th century.” Having painted a bleak picture of estate agents, it surely begs the question… why are Elliotts Estate Agents involved in the production ? “We approached Brian Huggins from Elliotts to see if they fancied sponsoring the show”, said Kay. “No, not so they could pick up tips – Elliotts are a wellestablished, independent agency, with a tremendous reputation in the city. And, of course, it’s clear that they are really good sports. They enthusiastically wanted to get behind a local company and have some fun in the process. It’s been a genuine pleasure having them involved.” Pretty Villain Productions won awards at the last 2 Brighton Fringes (The Crucible, 2014 ; The Lad Himself, 2015) and are thrilled to offer Glengarry Glen Ross this year, along with Myra and Blackbird. The message of this show is simple: to see estate agency done well, go to Elliotts; to see it done badly come and see Glengarry Glen Ross...

I
t’s that time of year again; venues springing up around every corner, the city filled with performers and punters, even stranger sights than usual on the streets – yes, Fringe is definitely in the air. Yet to peruse any brochures? Don’t panic. One of the best things about Brighton in May is being able to take part in a festival without even trying. From productions on the seafront to comedy in your local pub,
everything is there on your doorstep. For eleven months of the year, St Peter’s Church North is a pretty green space in the centre of bustling London Road. Come May, it will be transformed into a fairylit delight, as Brighton’s Otherplace Brighton bring their muchloved popup The Warren back for another year. reg remembers the first time he met me and I don’t. Apparently I made a stupid joke about his leather jacket and asked him if he rode a motorbike or if it was just for show. Who knew I could be so charming? All I remember is that we have a lot in common. We both think politics is not dull even though the television, journalists and even some politicians would like you to think so. We also shared an interest in documentaries and lifestyle shows. To put it simply we were just two nerds. I would often find excuses to work on projects together or meet up. He just seemed really interesting and different from other guys. He was refreshing. He would often notice things when I didn’t think he was paying attention and ask questions like he was reading my mind. I wouldn’t say I was necessarily “falling for him” or anything like that, I just enjoyed spending time with him. He made me feel cultured and worth listening to. Yet there’s just something about him. If we did get together would it mean that’s it? He just seems comfortable, nothing like Peyton who keeps me on my toes wanting more. I guess I will just have my fun with Peyton and see what happens with Greg, I mean you’re only young once and as long as I’m upfront about it they can’t get hurt, surely? I’ve seriously never had this issue before. It’s feeling a bit like London buses. I’ve spent years wondering what’s wrong with me because I’ve not had any relationships or even any action and now I’m spoilt for choice. Watching all these rom coms about men chasing women and women falling for it, I’ve always known that would never be me, or in fact anyone’s reality. But I’ve always wondered about it, always considered being swept off my feet. So I guess my choice is between lust and love and I’m okay not choosing either.

ands up all of you who have travelled to Paris and enjoyed the sight of the magnificent Eiffel Tower, it really is the most wonderful and iconic sight. Maybe you, like me, have also admired Blackpool Tower, not so big but equally impressive and again a great icon of the British seaside resort. I have reveled at so many wonderful buildings around the world, the lunacies of Las Vegas had me rocking with laughter. The Sydney Opera House makes a startling silhouette against the bright blue of the harbour and sky. The harbour bridge to the left is pretty impressive too and knocked my personal memory of the Runcorn suspension bridge into touch. The Guggenheim in Bilbao is a shiny and shining example of the shock of the new. You may be wondering where I am going with this so I will try to explain. The recent furore over one person's view of Brighton Pier got rather out of hand. I have to say that I think his view was silly and expressing it as he did was misguided, but I guess he's entitled to his opinion. In the same way that people are free to express their opinions on the British Airways i360. I like it, I like the pier and I always have, it is a vital element of our city's rich history. I guess when the pier was being constructed there was an air of awe and wonder at the technology and no doubt a few detractors too. The threat of the new is for some exciting and for some scary. The pier has been a huge success and has no doubt been a major factor in attracting visitors to the city. I hope that the new hi tech viewing tower will be equally impressive and attract many more visitors. One day we might all be standing there, amongst the visitors, looking at it with the same eyes that were seduced by the Eiffel Tower and all of those other scary new edifices that we now revere.

leanor Harris, CEO of British Airways i360, took part in a 10k charity run for Chestnut Tree House, on Sunday 17th of April. She raised an impressive £1,500 for the charity, who are the only children's hospice in Sussex. They care for life limited children and young adults aged 019, and also provide support for their families. It costs approximately £10k a day to keep the hospice open, so fundraising is a vital part of enabling them to continue the important work that they do. As a mum herself, the cause is very close to Eleanor’s heart. This January she took up running for the first time in nearly 20 years, joining her team at BA i360 to take part in a corporate relay in the Brighton Half Marathon. She thought that as a new runner, 10k would be quite a challenge, but certainly rose to the occasion finishing the race in one hour and six minutes! Latest caught up with her after the race for a chat, she revealed: “I would like to say thanks for all the amazing support! I had a slow start as I was at the back and got stuck behind some very slow runners. It was really nice to see all the Chestnut Tree supporters at Hove Lawns. As a new runner I feel very proud of my race time!”. y phone rang today and the voice said "Char, I'm in Marmalade, are you free for coffee?". It was my friend Jason Maverick. Jason was a presenter on Channel 5's Havakazoo in the ‘90s, he is also a multi talented entertainer and a former international athlete. There is no end to Jason's talents, as he's now written a poetry book called 'Comic verse for Men and Curious Women'. [Available on Amazon] Jason, what was the inspiration for your book? Well, a while ago I had a very serious back injury and I couldn't move, I couldn't do anything for months, so to cheer myself up I started to write comic verse. It's the world through my eyes, so a male viewpoint, but I didn't want to exclude women.
“ I’ve performed
at the Queen’s parties ”
Can you give me an example of one of the poems from your book? Sure. How about this one: Recipe for water Tried to make water today, two spoons of hydrogen, one spoon of oxygen, it worked, but to be honest I think I made it a bit too runny. You’ve performed at some extremely famous people’s parties haven’t you? Yes, I've done Her Majesty The Queen’s parties a couple of times. Posh and Becks, oh and I did Johnathan Ross's Halloween party for 8 years. George Harrison asked me to perform at his party. He and his son operated my sound system! What’s next for Jason Maverick? You'll see me in the BBC1 film ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ which is out later this year. It's all part of the celebration for the 400 year anniversary of William Shakespeare. LATEST 7 | 13

> A hunch about brunch Terre á Terre delivers in style
I
have a real aversion to places that say they open for breakfast but only open their doors at 9am. By that time I have been up and broken fast for some time. Brunch however is another thing all together and a meal that I can really enjoy – when it's done properly. Terre á Terre now serve lunch and as you might guess the dishes come labelled with Amanda Powley's poetic titles. I love them, they make dining there not only a gourmet delight but a fun one too. After a morning in the studio at Latest TV I lured my coproducer Mr S along for a late brunch. He's very new to the city so had never been to T á T before but an hour later he was a total convert, even booking a table for the following Saturday to treat his mum – what a nice son. We started with a drink, a bloody mary for me and a virgin mary for him, both deliciously spiced but mine intoxicatingly spiked too. The menu was full of temptations so with advice from the lovely Mrs R we chose three dishes. I chose Run Rarebit Run Rarebit Pickle Chips. I love Welsh rarebit in any form but the idea of mustard and booze infused cheese on chips with a poached egg was too much to resist, and it was delicious. A really comforting, memory stirring joy. Mr S chose Smokey Scrunch Chips, crunchy chips with chilly chelly, smokey zattar and soft spice tofu, with a side of avocado lime hash. He too ate away with a smile on his face. We also sampled a new condiment from the T á T kitchen, a take on a brown sauce that puts HP in the shade. Our third dish was Satay and Smoke, a 14 | LATEST 7

toasted muffin filled with griddled smoked tofu, satay, tamari mushroom and melon rind pickle jam. My word that was good, far too good in fact and something I will be back to eat again very soon. Coffee was equally good and piping hot and before we left we were persuaded to share a Portuguese style custard tart. Having been to the home of the pastel de nata in Belem I have to say that it was not quite traditional, the custard, delicious as it was had not set and taken on that mahogany brown caramelised skin. It did not matter, it was still a fine thing and the addition of rhubarb was inspired. Terre á Terre never fails to impress and the constant flow of accolades and awards that it has garnered over the years are so well deserved. The city offers so many amazing dining opportunities these days and T á T should be recognised as being at the forefront of that rise from culinary obscurity to the internationally applauded foodie destination that it has become. I am often asked to name my favourite restaurants and I usually ask for clarification "What kind of meal are you looking for? How much do you want to spend? Are you looking for fun or a refined fine dining experience? Do you seek comfort or innovation?". The questions might all have a different answer, except for one place that would answer each demand, and that is Terre á Terre. The Brunchy Lunchy menu is available from 10am to 1pm Terre à Terre, The Vegetarian Restaurant, 71 East Street, Brighton, BN1 1HQ, 01273 729051 www.terreaterre.co.uk

STAGE Brighton Fringe tips

> Nando Messias: The Sissy’s Progress
B
righton Fringe is the place to find the new, the exciting and the challenging, and perhaps no more so than within the Pink Fringe. This year sees a performance by Nando Messias called The Sissy's Progress. Nando Messias was beaten up on the street behind Toynbee Studios in an act of homophobic hatred. After years of dreaming up his response, he presents The Sissy’s Progress, a spectacle of provocation, celebration and hyper flamboyance. Part dancetheatre, part walking performance, The Sissy’s Progress leads its audience out onto the streets with a live marching band playing original music composed by Jordan Hunt. The Sissy’s Progress confronts the harsh contradictions of gender and violence of city life, standing up for sissies everywhere. Messias is heading onto the streets with musical director Hunt and five musicians to share his work with audiences and passersby across the UK. Instruments include the cornet, saxophone, trombone, tuba and snare drum. Nando says: "It's genuinely frightening. I almost always get abuse from passersby when we're doing the performance. The audience gets

to experience that and that makes it feel uniquely relevant. I'm particularly proud that we take this performance precisely to places where such work wouldn't normally be seen. It's a universal theme." The Sissy’s Progress 7 May, Marlborough Theatre, Brighton, www.marlboroughtheatre.org.uk Little Prince Hove schoolboy Ronan Powell will this summer take on the role of a lifetime after winning the title role in a new musical adaptation of Antoine de SaintExupery’s The Little Prince, premiering at Brighton Open Air Theatre from 20–22 May. nseasonably cold outside, the Dome was scorching inside. Falla’s 2nd Suite from ‘The Three Cornered Hat’ was full blooded with vigorous Spanish passion and a richness of sound that just isn’t heard from the ballet’s orchestra pit. The concerto, Rodrigo’s ‘Fantasia para un gentilhombre’, gave us stately Baroque dance tunes but still with plenty of Iberian spirit. Craig Ogden’s relaxed command of the auditorium suited the aristocratic style. In Prokofiev’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’ the orchestra expressed so many temperaments: majestic, flirtatious, lyrical menacing and impassioned. The intensity of volume and the clarity of the silences in ‘The death of Tybalt’ was outstanding. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 16 April 2016 Andrew Connal ★★★★★

> Calexico – an exceptional American folk rock band that crosses borders
B
orn from the cult band Giant Sand, Joey Burns and John Convertino have embraced the strains and styles of americana, texmex, desert rock, latin and world music, and jazz in formulating the Calexico sound. After Giant Sand decided to move to Arizona, Burns and Convertino, along with Bill Elm, formed Friends of Dean Martin (subsequently Friends of Dean Martinez), signing a deal with Sub Pop before they split with Elm, and the duo became a much indemand rhythm section. They then formed Spoke, which transformed into Calexico, named after the border town in their home state of California (along with the border with Mexico). Since then they have released eight albums, and crossed many musical borders, embracing a multitude of diverse styles, working with the likes of Iron & Wine, Giant Sand, Tortoise, Arcade Fire and many others along the way. More recently, last year saw the release of ‘Edge Of The Sun’, an album once again filled with an eclectic cast of collaborators including Sam Beam of Iron & Wine, Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses), Gaby Moreno, Amparo Sanchez and Neko Case, in continuing the journey of restlessness and rootlessness that has characterised their oeuvre, that skirts around American folk rock whilst utilising music from around the globe in creating cinematic soundscapes. They continue to make exceptional music that like their name, crosses borders. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Tues 26 April, 8pm, £20

> What is this postclassical malarkey at Brighton Festival?
B
righton Festival is coming soon and I'm giddily excited about it. I generally go to as many shows as I can fit in/afford, and next week I am writing in our exciting supplement picking highlights from the whole programme. This week however I'd like to focus on a quiet gem in the programme that might have slipped past you in the rush of all the events on offer. 130701, an imprint of the Brightonbased FatCat Records, plays an important role in the development of postclassical music and lists Max Richter, Hauschka and Johann Johannsson on their roster. Three of their signings are playing in one evening at The Spire, including Dmitry Evgrafov's airy music that recalls a Scandinavian landscape in some moments, then Steve Reich in others. Emilie LevienaiseFarrouch's compositions sometimes focus on the piano, recalling the delicate melodies of Nils Frahm while other tracks have led to soundtrack commissions from HBO and the BBC. Resina (aka cellist/composer Karolina Rec) is more sparse and strange however, using tape delay and live looping (a technique that is all the rage in Brighton's student population so there could be a large potential fanbase for her work here). Regular readers will know that I'm a keen fan of crossover appeal and classical music reaching a wider audience. I think that artists such as Max Richter are brilliant at broadening people's musical horizons and opening their ears up to the possibilities of classical music. (Richter’s reconstructed Four Seasons is a delight for example). I’ve never been to The Spire before so a new venue is also a nice thing to try out, and I hope to see you there in the crowd of the musically curious. The Spire, Tuesday 10 May, £14

ext week it’s May. Really. Which heralds in the arrival of the Brighton Fringe for the duration of the month. With hundreds of shows to see, it’s difficult to work out where to start, so here are just a smattering of shows that stand out from the crowd. Unsurprisingly, the now flagship popup Brighton Fringe venue The Warren has an excellent variety of top notch shows, mixing the firm favourites, like Sh*tfaced Shakespeare and Sh*tfaced

Her technique has been described as recalling ‘the work of Gerhard Richter’s abstract paintings and the poetic quality of later Claude Monet’, and it’s no exaggeration to say that the results – often years in production – are just awesome. She calls them ‘images to dream into’, so give your imagination a treat.
