LOVED UP > Brighton loves Disco Pete!

D

isco Pete is a loved legend in Brighton, having been a regular at club nights and festivals in the city since the 1960s. Sadly his dancing has been put on hold, as 79 year old Pete, had a health scare last year. He began shaking uncontrollably and a subsequent hospital appointment revealed that he may have Parkinson's disease. In a recent interview with The Argus, he said: “I don't want to give up dancing because the festivals are starting. I want to go back but the doctors say I shouldn't be dancing, if they can sort out my balance I will be back!" As a tribute, Same Sky Brighton, created a larger than life version of him to join in with the Children's Parade, as it was assumed he wouldn’t be able to attend this year. However, in true die hard party spirit, Pete delighted fans by turning up in his wheelchair! Latest 7 wishes you a speedy recovery, and we hope to see you out dancing again very soon!

A harrowing childhood led to problems with addiction in his adult life, and related health problems. However, his positive attitude is as bright as the suit on his back, as he revealed: “I’m a recovering addict and have been clean for ten years, I no longer do heroine, I spent the money on this suit instead! he giggles. They’re the best. And for some reason they seem to turn up in my house with the sunshine. That happytired feeling that allows me to practically fall over laughing as I contemplate what blowing my nose might sound like when heard from outside of my head. I do think the longer days mean that the world can seem brighter in more ways than one. Even if it’s raining, that coseted cosy blanket of navy darkness has yet to arrive. It’s not night time, which means that period after I leave work and before I have to think sensible thoughts about dinner and bills and how to change a duvet cover has yet to arrive. Giving free reign to silliness, the possibility of drinking in daylight hours, and simply space to mull over the minutiae of the world and its ridiculousness. There are lots of things to be serious about at the moment: the future of the NHS, the constant attempted nullification of the horrific plight of refugees, those bills that keep turning up on Facebook as being ‘slipped through’ parliament. So when you do get the chance – seize the laugh. LATEST 7 | 5

BRIGHTON FESTIVAL > Dr Blighty: concerts, commemorations & more celebrating a chapter in the history of the Royal Pavillion Estate

I

n the final week of Brighton Festival, the Royal Pavilion Garden will be transformed by Dr Blighty, a largescale, immersive outdoor experience inspired by a special chapter in the city's history. More than a million men travelled from India to fight for the Allies during the First World War, and between 1914 and 1916, over 2,000 Indian soldiers wounded on the Western Front were brought to a temporary hospital housed on Brighton’s Royal Pavilion Estate. Dr Blighty brings the experiences of the soldiers – and the locals who came to care for them – movingly back to life via a number of immersive walkthrough installations across the Royal Pavilion Estate. Animated by actors and enhanced by ambient soundscapes and theatrical interludes inspired by letters the soldiers sent back home, the event will seek to capture the essence of the hospital and those who recuperated here. For four nights, a spectacular afterdark production will incorporate video projections on the Royal Pavilion, evoking memories of a very distant home for the soldier convalescents, and two special concerts at Brighton Dome combining classical music traditions from East and West. Created by performance company Nutkhut, led by artistic director Ajay Chhabra, Dr Blighty is brought together by a creative team that includes designer Tom Piper (Tower of London poppies). Dr Blighty is a Nutkhut Production cocommissioned by 1418 Now: WWI Centenary Arts Commissions, Brighton 6 | LATEST 7

Commemorations Sun 29 May, 4pm Royal Pavilion Garden FREE Dr Blighty and Brighton Festival are brought to a close with a special installation, the laying of thousands of diya lamps to commemorate the soldiers’ stay in the city. It coincides with a wreath laying ceremony in Royal Pavilion Garden at the Indian Gate, and the unveiling of a Blue Plaque honouring Subedar Mir Dast (awarded the Victoria Cross at the Royal Pavilion by King George V). Organised by Davinder Dhillon, from the Chattri Group, this commemoration also marks the departure of the Indian soldiers from Brighton's military hospitals 100 years ago. Nutkhut have taken the diyas as one of the symbols of their project; these handmade lamps, which would have been carried by the Indian soldiers, are used for celebrations, commemorations and special occasions. The soldiers would have used these pots to provide light in the darkness of war and as a small reminder of home and family; in addition they may have provided the light needed to share experiences and write and read precious letters to and from home. > The four mayoral candidates Brighton needs

> Now is the month of Maying...

A

W

ll this talk of mayoral elections has got me feeling pretty left out on Brighton's behalf. What other candidates are out there suitable for the role in our city? So get your thinking cap on as I present to you, as exhaustive a list as this word count will allow of four alternative candidates to be the mayor of Brighton. 1. Fatboy Slim Practically married to the city already, Mr Cook would surely be a popular choice. He has an exemplary track record of collaborating with others, and the campaign literature basically writes itself: "We've come a long way baby together. Through the hard times and the good." His opponents however would seek to smear him over past associations with Rizzle Kicks. 2. Mary Beard A Brightonian she may not be, but Britain’s best historian is awesome and clever and nice – someone whose spirit embodies everything great about Brighton. Also, props to anyone who can do a piece to camera standing next to an enormously phallic Roman statue without giggling. 3. Super Hans Matt King, who plays the hilariously horrible Peep Show favourite is another famous Brighton resident. I would, however, demand that all mayoral duties were performed in the character of Super Hans. Imagine him having to make a speech about cycle lanes while on a savage comedown. 4. Prince’s ghost This is what it sounds like when seagulls cry. If ever there were a city to blaze the trail of having the first ever Mayor not to physically exist, it’s Brighton. It would be one nonstop festival of salacious outfits and killer guitar riffs with ‘The Poltergeist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known As Prince’ in charge.

hen merry lads are playing, fa la la la la… well you probably know the rest. The truth is that May is my busiest month of the year, the month that you are most likely to see me out on the town and at the end of the month you can even catch me on the Live Food stage at the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival. The first part though is filled with the excitement of the Brighton Festival and of course the Brighton Fringe. This year is not only the 50th anniversary but also my 30th festival. If you start looking at the numbers you will see that I have, over the years, seen a huge number of shows. Many of them memorable and of course a few memorable for all the wrong reasons. I never underestimate the fact that as a reviewer I am very lucky to be able to see so much of the festival, concerts, theatre, arts of all kinds and these are the things that I love to do. Even if I did not write reviews I would be a theatre goer and arts lover, although with a small budget I would probably have to cherry pick the things I see, choosing events that I already have knowledge of or those for which I have read reviews. This of course informs the way I review, knowing that readers may well make a decision about what they choose to pay to see based on what I say. As a reviewer I try not to cherry pick things that I expect I will like. I enjoy seeing a wide range of events and performances and I always hope that I will enjoy them, but know that sometimes I will be disappointed or in extreme cases even leave angry. Seeing the bad informs my opinion of what is good. Everything lies on a scale and my job is to give a personal but informed opinion of where something sits on that scale. Of course taste plays a part, but taste must always be tempered by honesty, honestly!

his year’s Brighton Fringe Festival launched with a spectacular fireworks display at The Warren. The free event, which took place on Friday 6th May, saw fireworks launched from the top of St Peter’s Church. Julian Caddy, Brighton Fringe’s managing director, said: “As England’s largest arts festival it feels only right to start with something massive and spectacular from the top of one of Brighton’s most iconic buildings in the centre of town. I’m really pleased to be working with the lovely people at The Warren who are helping make the start of this year’s Brighton Fringe an incredible one.” Doctors from The Hippo That Can Never Be Caught

hen I was little, I remember watching The Bill on ITV and wanting to be a police woman when I grew up. I think that phase only lasted a few months and then I wanted to be an archeologist. To this day I still change my mind quite regularly about what I want to be when I grow up! The other day I bumped into my friend Tom Cotcher who played Alan Woods in The Bill from 19921996 but is now a painter, author and an actor. Tom and I managed to grab a coffee and have a good catch up. When did your interest in painting start? It started 7 years ago. I was asked to paint a little picture for charity at the JAG Gallery in Brighton. It raised £40 and they encouraged me to paint more. I had my own Art Gallery in Kemp Town for a while called Artscape. I now have my studio at home. Recently I've just been chosen for the Director’s Choice at the 'Not the Royal Academy' at The Llewellyn Alexander Gallery, opposite the Old Vic Theatre in London. My most popular paintings are what I call ‘naive Matisse interiors’. Matisse because they are colourful and naive because I don't know what I'm doing!

BRIGHTON2PARIS > Mayor’s Charity Cycle Ride is a roaring success!

T

he Brighton 2 Paris Charity Cycle Ride organised by Colin Brace and the Brighton & Hove Property Consortium, arrived at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, on 8th May, on a scorching hot Sunday afternoon. The cyclists, having ridden 129 miles from Brighton, were greeted at the finish line by the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Lynda Hyde. She managed to wear her full regalia while basking in the 28 degree heat and sunshine. The cyclists came from a variety of property companies throughout the city, who were keen to raise money for the city’s charities. The companies that took part were Colin Brace Properties, Oakley Property, Hyde Housing, Handelsbanken, Lewis & Co Planning, Coffin Mew, Pilbeam Construction, Woodhart Construction, Robinson Low Francis, Lomax Cassidy Edwards and Parks Lettings. Colin Brace, of Brighton and Hove Property Consortium, said: “I am absolutely delighted with the enthusiasm, support and commitment from my fellow property professionals, without whose support throughout the year this event would not have taken place.” “Their positivity, good humour and determination ensured that the event was a great success. French charities at a welcome reception at the City Hall upon our arrival in Dieppe.” The team took on the challenge cycling through some hilly but beautiful French countryside, via Dieppe and Beauvais to raise £30,000 for the Mayor’s charities: The Martlets Hospice, Grace Eyre Foundation and The Argus Appeal. All of this year’s cyclists have already agreed to take part next year, as they enjoyed this year’s so much. The Brighton and Hove Property Consortium will also be looking for additional cyclists and sponsors for next year’s event. Colin Brace added: “We’ve already started work on next year’s charity cycle ride where we hope to work closely with our French counterparts to expand the event which will become a regular fixture in the Mayor’s fundraising calendar. Next year’s event will help support a number of local charities, including exservice men and women whom we hope will take part in the event itself.” For additional information please contact brighton2paris@yahoo.com

ith a new chef at the helm of The Restaurant at Drakes Hotel it seemed like a good opportunity to return to one of my favourite dining rooms. And with new faces comes change, all of which is for the better. The dining room has been given a new look and friendly new faces add to a very warm and relaxed reception. The food too has been given a new lease of life and after an excellent cocktail in the upstairs bar, my guest, the lovely Ms L, and I headed down for what was to be a memorable feast of delights. First out an amuse bouche of seared mackerel that was, to be frank, as big as a starter in some places, and twice as good. The bread too was exemplary, brilliant flavours and textures coupled with good butter. Ms L started with an amazing terrine of pork neck with leeks and truffle, a confit egg yolk and pickled chanterelles. She was silent with joy, an unusual status for her and on tasting her dish I could see why. I chose the sea trout ceviche with crab beignets and was equally delighted and impressed. The fish was perfectly cured and the addition of a cucumber and dill granita kept the dish light and refreshing. This was a good thing as my next choice was the squab pigeon which was big in flavours, perfectly cooked breast matched with a hazelnut crusted leg, a blood cream (black pudding puree) cavalo nero all lighted by roast quince and a juniper scented jus. This was accomplished classicism

delivered in a contemporary style. Ms L chose the roast brill with a lemon ash crust. There had been a leek ash on her first dish that we both liked and this lemon ash was truly delicious, as were the plump cockles and mussels and the lemon and caper butter coated sea vegetables. To say that she was happy would be an understatement although I think it was the shellfish that stole the limelight in her dish. We should have been too full for pudding but a job is a job, even when the chef sends you a predessert dessert of a pretty lemon posset topped with sweet crumbs and edible flowers, which of course we polished off before pudding proper. Ms L was beating the table Meg Ryan style as she devoured her papouasie chocolate and passion fruit delice with orange sorbet. It was better than good. I was equally delighted with a delicately fragrant violet souffle with lemon curd icecream. Maître d' Anthony looked after us well and selected great wines by the glass to match our very different choices. This was cooking of the very highest order, ingredients of the highest quality and exemplary service in one of the nicest rooms in town and I cannot wait to return. With a slew of awards, and celebrated in the New York Times as ‘London’s most theatrical salon’, over the past nine years it has welcomed guests such as Will Self, Tariq Ali, Andy Bell and Stella Duffy to its stage. For Worthing, POLARI has been organised by Worthing WOW in association with Worthing Pride, a group that has come together to offer events for LGBT audiences and supporters of equality, and is one of the

“ POLARI promises to wow Worthing with its unique blend of panache, cleverness and dexterity

nly a year ago I decided that, despite the skills shown and the thrills experienced, circus art based shows were not for me. Last night I discovered that I was wrong. The Ricochet Project have created a work that takes those skills and uses them in an exquisitely artistic way, an aerial and floor based acrobatic ballet that had me rapt from the moment the lights came up and exposed them entwined on a trapeze, dressed in drab day wear, to the final moment when once again dressed they resumed their “ordinary” personas. We were shown a life less ordinary, skills extraordinary and creativity that left all other circus art based shows groveling in the sawdust. Cohdi Harrell and Laura Stokes are both creators and performers of this incredible show which strangely enough, despite the title, is an utterly transparent exposition of real skills used to create a great and beautiful performing art. > Eagulls – Leeds five piece are back with a new album & perform at The Great Escape

T

he Leeds fivepiece were initially formed in 2010 by Henry Ruddel (drums) and guitarist Mark Goldsworthy (aka Goldy). They then recruited Liam Matthews on guitar, before Tom Kelly arrived on bass, followed by singer George Mitchell. They initially acquired notoriety for a letter they published which comprehensively rubbished contemporary bands and the music scene in which they inhabit, something that George now regrets: "It was like at the time nobody really knew us. Even now they don't know us, our sense of humour, stuff like that. It was like walking into a party with people you don't know, with one friend that you're really close to, and saying a joke that only he or she would understand. Yeah. It really backfired, and the party turned stale. Quickly." he deadpans. With a love of postpunk and ‘80s and ‘90s sounds in general, the Eagulls debut album of 2013 picked up a lot of interest, despite their name being a rather odd one. "It's like a deterrent. Why would I want to listen to a band with that name? You know what I mean?" Their new album, Ullages, an anagram of Eagulls, is a more melodic, slightly less punky affair, but which shows the band to be one with potential staying power. Ullage is a word to describe the amount by which a container falls short of being full, a term used in the pub and brewage industry. "It's basically just another way of looking at pessimism and optimism," he says. "You could look at the album just like most people: 'it's like the dregs of the bottle, or whatever'. But, it's really a bit of both. It's a measurement of what is left to either fill or what is already gone. It's just a metaphorical way of looking at the word." > Three stories: a murderous monologue, a Terminator 2 obsessive & miniature theatre

P

recious few words, and so much to see, so here are three great shows this week for your consideration. The Marian Consort have been acclaimed for their expressive storytelling by The Sunday Times and Sinfini Music, so they should be the perfect group to accompany the tumultuous story of Carlo Gesualdo. The Renaissance composer wrote some exquisite music (stream 'Tristis est anima mea' if you want a taste) but was also a murderer, having killed his first wife and her lover after discovering some infidelity. Brighton Early Music Festival cofounder Clare Norburn will be recounting the story in a dramatic monologue this Friday while the Marian Consort perform his choral music, melding drama and music in an enticing evening at Brighton Festival. (Breaking The Rules, Fri 20 May, All Saints Church, 7.30pm) New Zealand company Trick of the Light Theatre have scooped a swarm of awards for The Bookbinder, which sees an old man telling an apprentice a story, told through popup book to puppetry, with storytelling and live action chucked in for good measure. The dark fairytale had a sell out run in Edinburgh and this Brighton Fringe show is the first stop on their UK tour so you can impress your friends in a toldyouso kind of way, while actually enjoying a good show too. (The Bookbinder, 2228 May, Sweet Dukebox, 3pm) Finally, the semiautobiographical interactive show Now Listen To Me Very Carefully, which chaotically recreates the movie Terminator 2. Creator Andy Roberts estimates that he's seen the film about 238 times (it guided him through his adolescence) so this Fringe show utilises standup comedy, storytelling and participation to explore the blockbuster's integral role in his life. (2324 May, Bootworks Theatre, 8pm)

> Chatting with Gein’s Family Giftshop How has your day been? Brilliant, we just found out that there's a face on the moon so we've been busy crafting a message for him in lime powder on a nearby hill. We left Ed in charge of the text and he's dyslexic so he opted for a drawing of a cock and balls instead. He's arguing that it's as powerful as the Dylan Thomas quote we had previously picked. What should we expect from ‘Trophy Collection’? Oh just the usual. Exceptional sketches, swearing, blood, a

Are there any more recordings for BBC Radio on the horizon for Gein’s Family Giftshop? Yes! The wonderful, supportive chumps at BBC Radio Wales have let us have three more half hour specials on the radio. We're recording them in June with the brilliant

ot a German dictionary to hand? No worries, let me define ‘Unheimlich’ for you. It’s an adjective with three meanings: ‘weird, uncanny’; ‘familiar, yet unfamiliar’; and finally ‘concealed, out of sight’. It’s also the title of Holly Rozier’s new installation at the Corridor Gallery from 1 June. If you haven’t experienced Holly’s incredible soft sculptures at the Open Studios on the seafront then expect to experience simultaneous delight and repulsion. She describes this special sitespecific show as:

“A range of different scale anthropomorphic forms that look less ‘human’ than ever, dealing with much more undeniably unifying and universally ‘human’ emotions than I have ever explored before.” Roughly translated that means you will be awed by the way this artist transforms everyday fabrics – twisting, shaping, dyeing and embellishing them – into forms that evoke a sense of internal organs and unseen elements of the human form. Until 3 July. www.artymagazines.com
