> Paul Jones – The Nerdfather he picture is of me and my daughter, out at Brighton Fringe, flyering for my comedy show, Paul Jones: The Nerdfather. It’s an hour of stand up and multimedia comedy, about being a scifi and fantasy obsessed dad. The show takes the form of a guide to parenting for geeks and tells the story of me becoming a father and not putting away childish things. I’m a professional prop costume maker by trade, and for the last five years I’ve been making miniature scifi and fantasy costumes for my two kids. Although the Brighton shows have passed, I will be back later in the year, plus you can catch me at Bedford Fringe and other Fringes too!

mph. It’s a noise I find myself using increasingly. In fact, noises in general are stepping up as a great alternative to clear diction and a varied vocabulary in my esteem. They communicate so much, nuances dancing in the tone and volume that skit along from mild dissatisfaction to all out approach of war on the horizon. Equally, there are sounds that can resonate with satisfaction and general happiness with the world – although for some reason they turn out to be more difficult to spell. There’s an intimacy in the rejection of words, language, and general articulation. Blowing raspberries at babies (and good friends) blows the cobwebs away and fosters an atmosphere of fun and frolics. A growl can be playful and a feral warning not to get too close – and we’ve all heard those screams in the night that unless followed by a peal of laughter can hint at a great big story of late night shenanigans getting a little too out of hand. So I’m hanging up my words for the greater good. As well as a dollop of curiosity as to what kind of reply might come back. LATEST 7 | 5

> Olivia Evans’ colourful tips for summer
P
antone have released their forecast for the top colours to wear this summer, so here’s the breakdown of the colours you should be looking out for! Rose Quartz This particular shade was the most prominent throughout designers’ work this season. Peach Echo Similar in tone to rose quartz but with a coral undertone, peach echo is a gorgeous warm shade. Limpet shell This fresh and modern sky blue is a great shade for warmer months, perfect for darker skin tones. Lilac Grey Perfect for pairing with bolder colours such as red, lilac grey is a modern, perfect base tone to layer with. Iced Coffee A neutral, earthy tone that is easy to work with in your wardrobe. Invest in a trench coat or suede sandal heels to be bang on trend. Green Flash If you’re craving a punch of colour in your wardrobe, be unique and add a pop of green. Fiesta Dare to contrast your calmer shades with a pop of red. You can incorporate a splash of red into an outfit by simply adding a bold lipstick. Buttercup If wearing yellow is out of your comfort zone, look out for smaller pieces such as a bag to add interest to your wardrobe.

hat could possibly be better than watching the world go by at a languid pace, while eating Eggs Benedict and sipping a fluffy Cappuccino on a sunny afternoon? Being inches away from a totally unique shopping experience when you're finished that’s what This was a situation I found myself in recently, when Herve and George kindly invited me for breakfast at Cup Of Joe, the cafe at the heart of Kemptown Trading Post. It goes without saying that the food was amazing. George's reputation for producing top quality French/Anglais breakfast fare
precedes him. What's not as widely known though, is the wonderful variety of reasonably priced vintage and contemporary items for sale, under the same roof. I have visited other flea markets in Brighton, and often felt overwhelmed. Firstly with the amount of items available and secondly the amount of people also looking at said items. Kemptown Trading Post is a breath of fresh air by comparison, mine was a truly relaxed shopping experience. The stall holders are very friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble. There's just enough of everything to
make browsing a pleasure as opposed to a chore. I was pleased to add to my shoe collection while there. Among the beautiful dresses, jewellery, nik naks and soft furnishings, I noticed a fabulous pair of red shoes! Anyone who knows me will testify to the fact that I'm a big fan of a rouge heel. Best of all they were my size and only ten quid. Bargain. I resisted the urge to put them on immediately and skip home like Dorothy. I had a thoroughly enjoyable dining and
shopping experience. It was refreshing to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, and I will definitely be back. Kemptown Trading Post offers great food, friendly staff and lots of variety. Why not pop up some time and say hi?

> The dilemma: love or lust?
> Wolky mile in my shoes
I
I
still don’t know how I got in this tricky dilemma between love or lust? Over a year ago I fell head over heels in love. I was stupid about it. Every second word was about him or about me thinking of him. I was a mess but it was a wonderful feeling. As fast as it started, it was over and I knew what I was looking for. I knew what the songs were all about. But I never had sex with him, it wasn’t even something I felt I missed out on. Yet now I can’t get enough of it. I’d fancied people before, but never felt like I wanted to rip someone’s clothes off like I do with Peyton. I have no idea what’s come over me. This animal attraction doesn’t seem to be calming down and with all this time we’ve been spending together, we’ve actually become quite good friends. We have inside jokes (pun not intended) and we seem to spend most of our time together inside and outside his flat. Many of my friends have worried that this haze of lust was going to corrupt me and make me fall in love with him, but I don’t feel that urge – which is surprising since I’ve been told women can’t define between love and lust. I guess that’s another lie we’ve been told all these years. It’s just that with Peyton it is so easy. I don’t have to care about what to wear or when to meet up with him and even how he’s feeling (well a little bit – I am a nice person). I didn’t ask him how he is or what his hopes and dreams are. We just watch TV, make fun of each other and relax. I do sometimes miss the romantic stuff though. I wish I could cuddle at night, hold hands with or even kiss in public. Maybe I don’t have to choose between the two – can’t I have both?

'm not a conventional dresser as those of you who have seen me will know. I like bright clothes, flamboyant clothes that certainly make me stand out. I especially love bright shoes and in particular red shoes. when I was a child I loved my bright red Startrite summer sandals and when I was about seven I was heartbroken that my ever expanding feet had taken me into sizes that were no longer available in red and only in brown. Brown! How dull! A few weeks ago I went the opening of a new shoe shop where the lovely Lorraine Bowen sang a newly penned ditty and cut the ribbon on an emporium of footwear delights. She was wearing a fabulous pair in zebra pattern so I was keen to see what they did in my sizes. There were great shoes, baseball boots, casual shoes and formal too and sandals, really handsome sandals that reminded me so much of those I had as a child. Okay they were brown or black, but they were a good shape. I chatted to the man behind Wolkyshop shoes and he very kindly said that he could perhaps make me a pair in red and a few weeks later they arrived and I love them, really love them. Now I can offer one of you the chance to win a pair of Wolkyshop shoes, from the range in store, by answering the following question. In which country did Wolkyshop Shoes originate? Fill in your answer at www.wolkyshop.co.uk/latest7 and one lucky winner will be walking in Wolky very soon!

une in to the Latest After Party, to kick start your clubbing weekend. It’s on Fridays, at 10.30pm, and repeated again for clubbers returning from their night out (Saturday 4.30am). Hosted by upbeat dance music artist Osaro, you are sure to have a fun time due to his quirky sense of humour and unique presenting style. Brighton based Mackenzie Bell was enlisted to be his sidekick and cohost in the first episode. Who knows who will present with him next? Latest After Party is filmed and edited by Matt Page (University of Brighton). The show aims to bring you current dance music trends, as well as offer a space for new music videos to be broadcast. Osaro also plans to interview DJ’s, producers and performers. In the first Latest After Party programme, (broadcast throughout May), being a Brighton based TV station, Osaro kick started the show with the one and only Fat Boy Slim. He explained that it “just felt right to do so”. Osaro then cheekily introduced his own music video “We Be” which was written after his near death experience with meningitis, and told us that writing the song was a cathartic experience for him. Future shows will introduce Brighton based producer, Noaksy, who is featured on the album: ‘Pacha House 2016’, now at number two in the Official UK top 40 dance album chart. Plus the Radiokillaz, who have hosted their own show on Radio One, as well as performing at Glastonbury. Osaro said: “Enjoy the show, have a laugh and enjoy the dance of life”. Make sure you tune in! www.osaro.co.uk

t's a great time to be in Brighton. The sun has been shining and the Brighton Fringe is well underway. There are so many shows, it’s hard to choose what to see. I’ve been lucky though, as I have been asked to appear at some of my friend’s comedy shows. I was invited to open for Josh Dillion and Cally Beaton’s 'Unleashed' at the Hobgoblin. Unleashed is a great show, with a good contrast of comedians, from the deadpan and dark Josh Dillon, to the jolly, feminist and sexualised Cally Beaton. It’s been selling out, so get there early! A few days later, I was back at the Hobgoblin opening for Rick Murtagh's Show 'ProgRock Comic’. What a great audience we had! This is a comedy show that won't discuss typical themes. No shock value, just honest humour. At last year’s Brighton Fringe, I was asked to do Stuart Turner’s Comedy Game Show, 'Haven't A Clue'. I was so pleased when he asked me back again this year. Two teams of comedians pit their skills and wit against each other. It’s comedy game show meets improv. The audience get to participate as well. You can see the show at The Caroline Of Brunswick. One show that I'm not involved in, but can't wait to see at The Craft Beer Factory, is 'Mummy I Don't Like Those Men'. An insight into the weird worlds of three up and coming Brighton comics, with three very distinct voices: Joe Foster (South Coast Comedian of the Year 2015), Graeme Collard (Max Turner Prize finalist 2015, Laughing Horse New Comedian semifinalist 2015), and Dave Fensome (SYTYF semi finalist 2015, Laughing Horse New Comedian semi finalist 2015). www.brightonfringe.org

> A defence of those most devious of beasts: waiters
A
s a food lover, of all kinds, I am fascinated by TV cookery shows and also by those highlighting consumer rights. I recently saw a trail for an item on a daytime show announcing features on restaurant chains and how they prepare dishes in central kitchens and on the ways waiters will use any means to get you to spend money. Let's take a look at that spiky topic first. Waiters, the lengths they will go to to make you spend money, the devious beasts! According to the reporter there are no depths to which they will not sink to make you buy food and drink. Apparently they are likely to tell you which of the dishes are their favourites. They might even sink as low as telling you about the daily special, even highlighting special offers and meal deals. And if they are really keen they might be extra nice, smiling at you, even daring to touch you. I ask you! I hope by now you are laughing because at the time I was angry. What did the director and producer of this consumer show not understand about the job of a waiter? Their job is selling you food and drink and of course they will try to sell you as much as they can as that is what they are being paid for. A waiter's job is not to try to persuade you not to have that side dish, or the delicious
@latestandrew
pudding or even that second bottle of wine, far from it. And we do all have the right to say thank you but no. I have the greatest respect for good waiting staff, they have a hard job sometimes and they are seldom well paid. They have to deal with grumpy chefs in the kitchen and grumpy customers in the restaurant. The hours are long and antisocial, they work when we are out having fun and all in all they put up with a lot and earn not a lot. So Mr TV reporter, take a look at it from their angle, put yourself in their shoes. If you made programmes that noone wanted to consume I'm sure that you would soon be out of work. The item regarding central kitchens was far more interesting and highlighted the fact that a lot of major restaurant chains get dishes supplied from large central kitchens. Well of course they do, how else could they produce what they do for the prices that they charge. This is where we are so lucky in Brighton and Hove, with so many small independent food businesses to choose from. If you want it cheap and cheerful then dine with the chains, they offer a great deal. If you want better then dig deep and support our brilliant independents.

Boxing clever
Takács Quartet
T
> Boxing is not about destruction: it’s about respect
M
arking the centenary of the 1916 “Conscription” laws, Take the Space bring their brand new play White Feather Boxer to TOM this June. What does it take to be better than the best? It’s April 1967: in a shabby Bethnal Green boxing gym, an elderly trainer, Jimmy, hears the news: heavyweight boxing champion of the world, Muhammad Ali, has defied the US Military by refusing to fight in Vietnam. Jimmy reflects on the choice he himself made during WW1, when Conscription sent pacifists to prison or the firing squad: when he, at the peak of his boxing career and physical prowess, stood up for what he believed despite the terrifying consequences. Now Jimmy faces a new dilemma: Jo desperately needs his help. Jimmy’s 70 something and a Quaker. Jo’s just turned 16; she’s strong, talented, impulsive and angry. Does he have the strength or patience to tame this wild young woman? Can he teach her discipline and respect? Following previous success with Sam & I, Hanging Hooke, Dolce Via and Stella, Take the Space now present a new play about pugilism and pacifism for the centenary of the passing of the notorious “Conscription” Laws of 1916. Chris Barnes plays Jimmy alongside Polly Jordan in the role of Jo. Writer and director Siobhán Nicholas explains: “I wanted to explore – and honour –
the psyche of the boxer and also capture the culture of the ring; I had a hunch that focusing on a retired boxer who has a very personal association with conscientious objection could allow me to come close to defining the qualities of bravery and duty.” This extraordinary story is about imparting wisdom, finding courage, understanding bravery – and learning what’s worth fighting for. Take the Space was founded eleven years ago. Their four previous productions: Sam & I, Hanging Hooke, Dolce Via and STELLA have toured across the UK and Ireland to The Minerva at Chichester Festival Theatre, The Mill at Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Ustinov at Bath Theatre Royal, Derry Playhouse, The Royal Society, Theatr Clwyd, Harrogate Theatre, Belgrade Theatre in Coventry, The Rose Kingston, TOM the Old Market in Hove, Eastbourne’s Devonshire Park Theatre, Stephen Joseph Theatre Scarborough, Oxford Playhouse BT Studio, Greenwich Theatre, The Dublin Festival of Curiosity, The Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury and The Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh. he annual trip to Glyndebourne is always a highlight and this year was no exception. Starting with Schubert’s Rosamunde String Quartet in A minor we were treated to a familiar work but one performed with a lightness of touch that breathed an air of new life into the piece that refreshed my love for it. Next Webern’s Langsamer Satz, a work that whilst clearly in the classical romantic form has elements of modernity that Takács deliver with intuitive polish. To say that as musicians they are connected may sound simplistic, but as performers they are sublime individually and exquisite as a whole. Antonin Dvorák’s String Quartet in A Flat major takes influences from traditional Bohemian folk dance but there is a thrilling thread of modernity here too. There is a darkness to the whole but not without moments of hope and light. For an encore we were treated to a pizzicato piece by Bartok, a tantalizing end to a delightful afternoon. > Beth Orton – Singer songwriter is back with a new album and Brighton Festival dates
B
ack in the early ‘90s, Beth Orton made a name for herself by hooking up with the likes of dance and electronic pioneers the Chemical Brothers, William Orbit and Red Snapper, whilst exploring her own sound that could be loosely described as folkpop electronica. In forging a career she has, for the most part, emphasised this side, on albums such as her breakthrough debut, ‘Trailer Park’, and 2012's ‘Sugaring Season’. But, the release of ‘Kidsticks’, her sixth studio album, sees her return to those electronic roots. "This record doesn't have any acoustic guitars on it to speak of," says Orton. "I play keyboards and synths. A guy called Andy Hung, we made the beats together, then I wrote to some loops, and then I brought in some live musicians. It wasn't a record of great expectations, it was more a record that made itself. Even though it is electronically based, it is a very warm sounding record. It's still very songbased, but it's a beautiful sounding record. I'm very pleased with the way it has turned out." The day of the release of ‘Kidsticks’ sees the first of two consecutive dates at the newly refurbished Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts (formerly Gardner Arts Centre), and she's both excited to be playing again, and to be a part of this year's Brighton Festival. "I'm excited, but I'm nervous. But, I feel that is a good place to be. I heard a brilliant thing the other day that David Bowie said: 'You know you are in the right place creatively when your toes don't quite touch the ground. You're just a little out of your depth'. And also, Laurie Anderson is curating the festival, which is extremely exciting." Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, 27 & 28 May, 8pm, £17.50

> £10 tickets for innovative dance & experimental music at Brighton Festival
O
ne of my favourite things about Brighton Festival is the opportunity to try new things for a great price. At the time of writing, there are still £10 tickets available for two dance performances at the Theatre Royal and the Dome's Concert Hall, so this is a perfect opportunity to try out worldclass dance in a beautiful venue. I grew up mostly attending rock gigs but Antony Gormley's 'Sutra' and Hofesh Shechter's 'barbarians' are two of my favourite shows ever: beautifully fusing music, lighting and dance in a beguiling, glorious whole. Correction sees the performers' legs stuck to the ground (reflecting their lack of freedom) while slants, falls and imbalances are “corrected” and the person restored to equilibrium. There will be subtle humour and poignant interaction, which can be distinctly entertaining when watching dance, in a way unique to the form. A live soundtrack from four clarinetists (Clarinet Factory) will be a fascinating piece in itself, since their style takes in classical, jazz, minimalism and film music so we can expect some fun dynamics and interplay with the performers. The hugely popular Akram Khan returns to the Festival after eight years, and ‘Until the Lions’ sees him perform with two of his company dancers and alongside four musicians performing vocals and “soundscape”. The prominent billing of the musicians reflects the integral role of music in modern dance performances and bolsters its crossover appeal. Having already been given five stars by The Observer, who described it as “thrilling and beautiful”, Khan’s latest show looks like it should also make for a fine evening at an affordable price. Correction, Theatre Royal Brighton, 2425 May, 7.30pm Until the Lions, Concert Hall, Dome, 26 27 May, 7.30pm

ith the Brighton Fringe going on all month, it’s a good idea to keep your ear to the ground with regards to shows that create a buzz early in the run. One such vibrating hot ticket is Jane Postlethwaite’s ‘Made In Cumbria’ show. With two packed shows earlier in the Brighton Fringe, the Lamb Comedy at Nowhere Man character treat is returning this coming Friday and Saturday. A little bit dark, funny, thoughtprovoking, unusual and completely

Hastings. This week both of these comedians have new works in progress playing in the Brighton Fringe, and as they’re not yet fully formed not only will you be able to see ‘under the hood’ at the comic’s working and creating methods, but they’re also free (although a donation in the bucket when you leave is always welcome). Both are playing at the Caroline Of Brunswick, with Hastings’ show on Friday and Saturday, and Bugeja’s on Monday and Tuesday. www.brightonfringe.org

> What Katy Perry did... or inspired at least ’m constantly amazed by the diverse sources of inspiration that provoke our Arty allies into a frenzy of creativity. Take Geoff Hands’ latest work, for instance. Creating a ‘chance’ colour palette from suggestions given by friends on Facebook, he made improvised compositions that became the ‘California Gurl’ series. And the results create an intriguing dichotomy: between an abstraction originating in observing the visual world, complemented by pushing the boundaries of his painting.
