pper Lewes Road recently had a rather nice addition, a dream wall. Painted white and sporting a picture of Martin Luther King, with a caption: “I have a dream and it looks like this”: the space encouraged passers by to scribble their hopes and dreams for the future. All of the comments left were positive, ranging from the comical: “Be a good vet and champion at Call of Duty” to the polictical: “Trump’s demise”!
veryone around me is feeling a chill, as we pass through one of May’s sporadic downpours that encourage the feeling that we enter the Brighton Fringe shivering and step out at the end blinking into summer sunshine. Everyone is cold except for me. Because I got sunburnt sitting on the beach yesterday. To be fair, the warmth from my glowing face means that I’m the only one sitting in a vest top while everyone else wraps up warm in woolies. I myself had a jumper on yesterday while I was guilelessly toasting my visage, but the stiff wind and patchy cloud caught me in its deception and the frazzle happened. And it won’t be the last chance this month to burn. Most popup Brighton Fringe venues have an outside space – from The Warren to Republic – and they are glorious to enjoy, especially after work with a cooling beverage. But just because there’s a breeze that won’t stop me covering up with sunscreen. I mean, it smells of summer for one thing, but secondly it’s a great excuse to talk to the stranger next to you in the guise of a concerned good deed. Well hello new pal.

BRIDESHEAD REVISITED > Evelyn Waugh’s classic Brideshead Revisited takes to the stage at the Theatre Royal Brighton
T
he 1980’s Granada TV adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s classic novel Brideshead Revisited, starring an impossibly young looking Jeremy Irons and Anthony Andrews, inspires fond memories in all who saw it. This year, to coincide with the 50th anniversary year of Waugh’s death, the first ever large scale stage production of the novel, adapted by Bryony Lavery, is touring the UK. This stylish production visits Theatre Royal Brighton for a week in June. It’s 1943 and, finding himself in familiar territory within the English countryside, Charles Ryder confronts memories of his first encounter with Brideshead Castle and its eccentric inhabitants.
In acclaimed playwright Bryony Lavery’s sparkling new reimagining of the classic

N
S
o sentence ever worth saying started with: "At the risk of offending...” But, at the risk of offending, ahead of this summer's European Championships, I've decided that supporting England in a major football tournament is akin to being religiously agnostic. Your first exposure to religion as a kid is sort of magical. You learn that everyone you know and love some day will die, but some day, if you're good, you'll be able to see them again. And then you lose on penalties in the quarter finals to Germany and cry. It's become unfashionable to support England in this godless 21st century. Your critics will point to seemingly fatal flaws in your theology, such as some of the players being casually racist, or footage of supporters trashing a bar with gay abandon. But you hold firm, not because you actually believe that one day the second coming will actually happen, but because on the off chance it did, you want to be able to be smug about it. "I always believed!", you cry through your tearencrusted face as Dele Alli takes a selfie with Jamie Vardy during the London open top bus parade, that will later be captioned "#championees #squadgoals". Yes, a gang of England fans may have thrown a café chair through the window of a Parisian orphanage just days earlier. Yes, the new special Euro 2016 winners single by James Corden, Jessie J and this year's winner of Britain's Got Talent may be excruciatingly unlistenable. None of this matters though, because you always knew it would happen again, and now you get to watch all the naysayers who dismissed Jack Wilshere as an overhyped crybaby burn in a cacophony of infernal damnation. So drag yourself back to church this summer, for Christ was born in 1966, and who’s to say that fifty years later he won’t come back to save us? He does have a wonderful sense of occasion after all.

ummer is a coming in and the birds do sing cuckoo. Well cuckoo indeed, the first glimmer of a sunny day and out came my shorts. I love shorts and always have. I think I was the only eleven year old who went to the grammar school in grey shorts and not long trousers, well for a week I did. Then I realised that my gangly legs were a source of much humour and derision. When it came to my first summer at the big school I could not wait to shed the grey flannels and get back into shorts for the holidays. It's a move that I have stuck with for much of my adult life. When I was head hunted from one job in publishing to a senior role at another publishing house, my future boss, in my interview, asked me if I had any questions that I would like answered. Most grown ups would have asked about holiday entitlement, pensions, expenses. Not me, I asked if they would have a problem with me wearing shorts in the good weather. Of course I was not being totally honest as back then I would cycle in from Streatham to Mayfair in all weathers and always in shorts. At the weekend I pulled open the shorts drawer, oh yes they have their own drawer, and there are plenty of pairs to choose from – or I thought so. One after one I tried them on only to discover that the drawer had shrunk them, well most of them. Fortunately there are a few pairs that I can still get into without looking like I have been badly trussed for the oven. The next question is of course footwear. As you might have read last week I have new red sandals from Wolkyshop, perfect to wear with shorts. The question is socks, can you wear socks with sandals. I know the naffest image is of the sandal and grey sock combo favoured by gentlemen of a certain age, but I reckon I can rock the sock with a bright stripe or spot, what do you think?

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT > The multitalented singer talks opera, dilettantism, criticism & more with Joe Fuller
R
ufus Wainwright is a generous fellow, gamely answering my lengthy questions about his journey of musical discovery. The full interview can be read at thelatest.co.uk but here are some of the best bits. Could you tell me more about how you discovered classical music? I was a normal thirteen year old until one day my mother brought a recording of Verdi's Requiem with Leontyne Price and Jussi Björling to the house and we listened to it from top to bottom. By the end I was a complete and utter opera fanatic so it was really that recording that and that piece specifically that changed my life in the span of two hours. Like any intense art form it devours you swiftly.
“ Both the critic
and I will be dead so who cares? ” How did you go about composing Prima Donna [Rufus’ first opera]? Well, I composed Prima Donna over the span of about two or three years and I was heavily involved in all the aspects of creation. I wrote the libretto and built the drama and so forth. I basically dedicated all of my energies to what it takes to write an opera, which was good at that period because my mother's health was starting to decline,
so it gave me a chance to focus my energies elsewhere as opposed to the tragic events that were occurring before me. So, a lot of passion and sadness, triumph and joy and darkness went in to the piece. And then to see it being released on Deutsche Grammophon with that iconic label and working with the BBC Symphony and the great Scottish soprano Janis Kelly has been my greatest dream come true! You've mentioned previously how the classical establishment sees you as a “usurper” and “dilettante”, does this bother you? No, it doesn't bother me. It definitely takes a bit of hardening at the outset to handle the attitude, but you realise eventually that intense criticism, especially in the world of opera, is very much part of the tradition of that art form. At one point a Verdi critic said to Verdi that Rigoletto had no tunes in it so needless to say the path is strewn with wrong views and it's really one hundred years down the line when the real story comes out... so both the critic and I will be dead so who cares? [laughs] Who are your favourite composers and why? Verdi has always been my favourite. I love both his music and his career. I like how he handles the public and the press and the establishment and did what he wanted to do as a human being and at the same time

constantly deepening in his work becoming more and more classical as he went along. I feel like I'm a Richard Strauss baby. I seem to always gravitate towards Richard Strauss. So Verdi and Strauss I'd say are my two favourites. How is your upcoming second opera about Roman Emperor Hadrian going? Hadrian is going great! I'm working on it right now as we speak. Chugging along and very excited about it. I'm a little nervous too, as anyone should be if they're choosing to try to conquer Rome with music. So, wish me luck! Have you spent much time in or around Brighton on previous tour stops? I've been to Brighton many times. It's always been one of
the highlights of my European journeys. I could live in Brighton, frankly. It's such a lovely place. What can the audience expect at the Dome, will it be a mix of opera, pop, Judy Garland and the Shakespeare sonnets? You know? It will be. I can say that for sure this time. I will be performing some Judy songs because I'm trying to gear up for that concert and having released the sonnets recently I want to plug that record and I'm always "operaing" it up... I'm always doing the operation. So that's what it'll be.

ugby AM has been an amazing journey so far, starting three years ago on a radio station in my garage in Leeds. It began as a morning radio show, with myself and former Great Britain legend Keith Senior, as we set out to showcase the personalities in rugby league. When Jamie JonesBuchanan joined the team in November 2013, he added extra ingredients, attitude and focus. Rugby AM was never just a show, our intentions were to build a brand that could join the dots between the players, the clubs, the fans and the business community. In June 2014, we got our break on TV with a monthly show on Premier Sports and in November 2014, we launched our weekly show on the Made Television Network. We now broadcast on seven channels, soon to be nine, recording over 100,000 viewers per week. A big thank you to all the players who have supported us since day one. The real value of Rugby League for me is the people from the guys at the grass roots who work tirelessly for their communities, for nothing but a love of the game right up to the super stars who are so accessible and always willing to help promote the game. I hope the people of the Brighton region and all the viewers of Latest TV will give the sport a go if you’re not already a fan. Although it’s predominantly a northern heartland sport, the RFL and Rugby AM are in partnership with some of the leading clubs and are reaching as far and as wide as possible. This year the test matches return to the Olympic stadium as well as the Challenge Cup final at Wembley and even sooner than that we host a fan branch event at Hemel Stags on Tuesday 7th June! Saturdays, 10am, repeats Sundays, 1pm & Wednesdays, 2pm.

> Fraternising with Frazer Hines
T
his week I had the chance to catch up with my friend Frazer Hines. Dr Who fans will remember that Frazer played Jamie McCrimmon, Dr Who's assistant from 1966 to 1969. He appeared in 117 episodes of the original series, more than any other assistant. Emmerdale fans will remember Frazer as the character Joe Sugden, a part he played between 1972 to 1994. What many people don't know, is that Frazer was in a film with Charlie Chaplin. So I had to ask him about that and what it was like to work with a Hollywood legend. You were just a young boy when you worked with Charlie Chaplin? I'm probably one of the few people who is still alive that worked with Charlie Chaplin. I was only 10 years old. I was in the film 'King of New York' and it was Chaplin's last leading role, his son Michael was in the film too. Charlie was amazing to work with and always very kind to me even though I was only a little boy.
“ I worked with
Charlie Chaplin when I was ten ”
Is Dr Who still keeping you busy? Yes, I've already been to America five times this year for Dr Who Conventions and I am going back later in the year. It's funny how a show I did over 40 years ago is making me more money now than it did then. I've just been presented with a lovely award from the Dr Who Appreciation Society for the best contribution to Dr Who. It is on my mantelpiece now. I've never won an award before! You should write a book about your experiences I have written two books actually. One is called 'Hines Sight', my autobiography and the other is called '50 Shades of Frazer: My Life in Pictures’. DISCLOSURE > Wildlife festival returns with founders Disclosure fast at the helm
W
ildlife was created by Disclosure in early summer 2014 as an extension of their hugely successful live and DJ shows. What began as tiny and very sweaty east London parties, soon grew into a global prospect within a matter of months and found Disclosure curating events in major cites across the world and hosting stages at various festivals in the UK, Europe and USA. These included Wildlife lineups at Glastonbury, Unknown, Exit Festival as well as bespoke events at The Greek Theatre in Berkley, Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, Detroit and a summer residency at Space in Ibiza.
“ We're fans of
everyone we book, and I think that personal touch helps ”
Less than a year later, they reached out to their good friends Rudimental in order to put together the inaugural Wildlife festival at Shoreham Airport or what is now officially called Brighton City Airport. What does Guy Lawrence, one half of Disclosure think the venue should be called? "Shoreham!" he say emphatically. He, along with his younger brother Howard have literally taken the world by storm with Disclosure, an act that has helped to reestablish house
music in the multifarious world of EDM. And it wasn't so long ago that the Lawrence brothers were two inexperienced producers using the skills they'd picked up in their music technology Alevel class to make a string of underground club hits, beginning with ‘Latch’ and ‘White Noise’. Winner of the Best New Festival at the 2015 UK Festival Awards, Wildlife tapped into an audience who like variety and musicality within their music; music from across the board, with artists and DJs such as George Ezra, Mark Ronson, WuTang Clan, Annie Mac and Jamie xx just the tip of an iceberg. This year, the line up is bigger, better, and even more eclectic, with the likes of hip hop legend Ice Cube, Brighton indie rootsrocker James Bay, technohouse king Carl Cox, indie sensations Bastille, new kidontheblock Jack Garratt, drum'n'bass supremo Andy C, alttechno experimentalists Four Tet, Avalanches, and new age hip hoppers De La Soul just a few of the names that will be bestriding five stages. How do you find the curatorial side of things? "We just call people up and ask," says Guy. "We're always amazed that people say 'yes!'. We are able to book a lot of people I thought we would never meet or see. We're fans of everyone we book, and I think that personal touch helps. I think that people find it refreshing that artists are curating the lineup, to make it more personal."
LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
Were you able to see much of the festival last year? "Not as much as we would have liked," says Guy. "We were also booked to play another festival that weekend. But this year we are planning on being there the whole weekend, beginning on Friday night for a little prefestival party, and then seeing as much as possible. We've cleared the diaries… Last year we loved WuTang and Skepta and JME who filled in for Sam Smith (who went down ill just before the festival)" And this year? "I'm looking forward to Flume, and Jamie Woon, whose last album is just incredible; Busta Rhymes, and some of the grime artists. Last year we spent a lot of time in the backstage area because there are a lot of friends there. But we also made a big effort to make it nice for everyone. I think that's really important. And we're of course really looking forward to playing again this year on the main stage!" Any changes made from last year? “Not really, just a few
tweaks here and there, the layout will be different… We were surprised at how smoothly it went last year." The brothers grew up just up the road in Reigate, and ventured down to Brighton manyatime in their early forays into dance music, seeing the likes of Joy Orbison at seafront clubs like Digital, Funky Buddha and Audio (all have subsequently changed their names to The Arch, The Tube and Patterns respectively), and as such their parents and even their Grandfather are expected to make the trip, as he did last year. "He loved it! He said he'd never seen anything like it… That was great, to be able to show him what we do." Why did you choose the airport as the venue? "We went to visit it and everyone thought it would be perfect. There's the Great Escape, but there isn't like a festival in a field in the area. It needed one!"

ast week was perhaps the busiest of my year. Brighton Festival clashed with Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival and a busy week of writing projects in a fabulous cacophony of food, music and creativity was to say the least exhilarating. Food wise it started with an amazing event at Jeremy's at Borde Hill where three chefs created an incredible menu inspired by their favourite musicals. We started with incredible canapes and a cocktail from Blackdown Distillery. This was followed by host chef Jimmy Grey’s amazing "meadow" starter, Bonner from The Set's witty "Little Mermaid" fish course and Sam Lambert from 64 Degrees’ amazing Oliver inspired tongue dish. And as if this was not enough Jimmy delivered a magical dessert that looked like a giant steamed sponge but was in fact a delicate riff on the idea of rhubarb and custard. A stunning night that also marked the start of a new push to raise funds for local food charity Fareshare. The following Tuesday we all gather for a spectacular Indian Banquet at the new Malmaison Hotel in Brighton Marina. Chef Kanthi Thamma and his team are also passionate about Fareshare and with the help

of the hotel and contributions from Butler's Wine Cellar and Blackdown Spirits we were treated to an amazing feast of delicious foods. First out was a platter of street foods and chutney, a delicious combination of mouthwatering delights. Then a dish of pan fried cod on spiced potato that showcased Kanthi's ability to be delicate with spice. Next a tandoor roast supreme of guinea fowl with a xacuti sauce and rice, vibrant stuff from Goa. Finally, a sweet and soothing dessert of pistachio kulfi, gulab jamoon and carrot halva that sent us home happy. But not before the highlight of the evening. We had already been treated to an amazing set of Indian music followed by brilliant Indian dancing. Then Mr Butler ran the raffle and an auction to raise the much needed charity funds. All this was good yes, great even – but not as great as the moment that chef Kanthi came out, ripped off his chef's whites and joined the dancers for an mind blowing display of dance that had us all wide eyed with admiration. Kanthi and the team raised an inspiring amount of money from the evening too, by my reckoning close to the target of £4,000.

righton Festival this year has certainly championed works created by local artists in many disciplines, from the exquisite clowning of Spymonkey to the impressive and nationally acclaimed collaboration between Hydrocracker and Blast Theory in Operation Black Antler. I loved this immersive work, engaging, exciting and at times scary stuff. I was also impressed by something else. Within minutes of arriving I realised that I knew one of the actors well. That could have been an issue in a work where the audience has to get so fully involved – but not for this talented artist. I'm talking about writer and performer Robert Cohen, a hard working artist who this year has not only been performing in Operation Black Antler but has also been active in David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross. Cohen is no stranger to the Brighton Theatre

scene and over the years his work, both as actor and as actor/writer, has been much acclaimed, from the dark drama of The Trials of Harvey Matusow to the sad comedy of Quint. Now, after an already hectic season he is continuing with a season of performances of his self penned and again acclaimed Something Rotten. Cohen’s show retells the tale of Hamlet from the viewpoint of the Prince’s murderous Uncle Claudius – examining the motives of a man who, apparently without compunction, kills his brother, marries his former sisterin law, assumes the crown of Denmark, and thus excites both the homicidal and the famously procrastinatory instincts of Shakespeare’s most famous character. An unmissable performance from a formidable talent. Sweet Waterfront 2, from 30 May to 5 June Tickets sweetvenues.com or brightonfringe.org

audience, playfully addressing us directly, involving us, and coaxing all to feel involved and absolutely captivated by their warm silliness, sharply constructed from start to finish with flare and a freedom that allowed them to riff off of interruptions and an experience that ensured each ad hoc remark or action hit home with laughter. With comic scenes and scenarios that flowed easily, involving anything from magic tricks to LA acting classes – all with a clownish glint – this was a true Fringe highlight. > The Stairs: one of the great lost bands of the ‘90s play Concorde 2
L
iverpool’s home grown garage psych rockers The Stairs were truly one of the great lost bands at the turn of the ‘90s. Championed by the likes of Elvis Costello, Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller, they influenced a new generation of bands including The Coral & The Zutons, with their exciting cocktail of Nuggets style ‘60s garage, R'n'B, and psychedelia. Led by Edgar 'Summertyme' Jones and featuring original members Ged Lynn and Paul Maguire, the band reformed for a oneoff show in their hometown of Liverpool last year, and will shortly be on the road for a small number of dates. Just recently they released the live album, ‘Live At The Cavern 1991’, a recently rediscovered recording that was made on a Sony Walkman, and which demonstrates the raw and visceral power of the three piece, who in their time only released the one studio album, the much sought after Mexican R'n'B. Since The Stairs called it a day in 1994, Jones has carved out a career fronting other bands, such as the Isrites, The Big Kids and Free Peace, as well as releasing solo albums, and playing as a session musician for the likes of Paul Weller, fellow Liverpudlian Ian McCulloch, Johnny Marr, and Ocean Colour Scene. The likes of Weller, Marr and Noel Gallagher have sung their praises in the past, and with some cajoling by friends and fellow musicians, Jones was finally persuaded to reform the band, in the knowledge that with The Stairs he had something very special indeed. > An unknown version of a Nick Drake song is celebrated & folk singer Jody Trehy hits town
T
he Festival is over, but we happily still have one more week of the Fringe to extend the party a smidge longer. Nick Drake is one of music's most melancholy figures, revered as the archetype of the 'geniusunappreciatedin theirtime' mold, but the sublime quality of his music justifies such idolatry. When working at Island Records, television composer Michael Burdett was asked to throw out some tapes, and after 20 years he decided to play one, discovering an unknown version of one of Drake's greatest works. Burdett offered people all over the UK a chance to hear the recording on headphones in exchange for photographing them, resulting in the show Strange Face: Adventures with a lost Nick Drake recording, which celebrates the life of the brilliant musician. Eliciting praise from Broadway Baby for its “mesmeric description and insight”, there are still tickets for Strange Face available for the Old Market show. Continuing in the poetic songwriter vein is Involuntary Noises: the songs of Jody Trehy, which showcases the work of the Dubliner backed with a five piece band. Socially engaged (I can hear the ears of Billy Bragg fans pricking up), Trehy brings a dramatic and unconventional voice to the singersongwriter scene. If you like your folk then Trehy is well worth a punt during his run at Sweet Dukebox. He's been acclaimed as an “Irish soul poet in the tradition that produced Van Morrison, but with the added flavour of Jacques Brel” by the Scotland Herald in a five star review, so he constitutes a fairly calculated punt for a musical treat this week. Strange Face, The Old Market, 2 June, 8.30pm Involuntary Noises, Sweet Dukebox, 31 May–5 June, 9.10pm

DY COMNE ANGLE VICTORIA
> The fat lady is not singing yet!
S
o... we’re in the last week of the Brighton Fringe and if you were worried it would start to slow down – fear not. Lamb Comedy, back for only their second year, have demonstrated a great array of comic shows at their two venues – Nowhere Man and Craft Beer Company (that’s one more venue than last year). This weekend doesn’t let them down as they not only mark the return of last year’s biggest draw to their venue in Lost Voice Guy (BBC New Comedy Award Winner),
Lost Voice Guy
but also their mixed bill line up Lambs To The sLaughter, and also Luke Stephens’ good intentions to live well in his show ‘Commit No Nuisance’. Over at Komedia the highly acclaimed master of the anecdote David James is in town on Saturday for an

afternoon show. And for most of this week there’s a chance to catch the absurd guided tour The Thermos Museum offering a 20 minute diversion after lunchtime that’s been heralded as a masterful piece of geekiness from Komedia’s store room. And Aidan Goatley’s ‘Joys Of Retail’. After the repeated success of his ‘10 Films With My Dad’ in recent years this is a fresh endeavour, moving from familial relationships to worklife. On at the Blue Man on Sunday, it’s a sweet gem. www.brightonfringe.org
