T

he Streetfunk children have been offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to go to Vegas and see some of the best hip hop dancers in the world. Two Streetfunk crews competed in March this year, at the UK Hip Hop Championships, to qualify for the prestigious Hip Hop International World Championships, in Las Vegas, in August 2016. Unfortunately, they didn’t qualify. However, at the beginning of May, J.P Omari, the founder of Streetfunk,

received a call from the organiser of the UK Hip Hop Championships, offering him the opportunity to bring a crew to compete, even though they failed to qualify! It was an offer he could not turn down. J.P works tirelessly to inspire, challenge and develop his talented young dancers. Being able to compete in Las Vegas, with the world's best streetdance crews, will greatly inspire J.P and his team. The kids and adults that will be competing in Las Vegas

> The Kinky Traffic Wardens he Brighton Fringe has sadly drawn to a close, following yet another successful year. A special mention must be given to The Kinky Traffic Wardens. Many of you will have noticed the scantily clad pair, patrolling the lengths and breadths of Fringe City this year, in their own words: “Bringing a smile to the face of the weary traveller”. Their names are David and Philip, and you may be delighted to learn that they were not part of a show, they just did walkabout performances in Fringe City for fun! here’s a myth of the ‘grown up’, even more so in this ever creative and skippingfairy town of ours. When do you actually become a grown up? I used to think it was when I moved out from my parents. But then I did that and all it meant was remembering to pay the utility bills before we got cut off. I didn’t feel any different, just a little bit more likely to fall asleep in places that weren’t designated sleeping areas. Then I thought it might be when I started a ‘career’. You know, not just the ‘job’ you do on Saturdays so you can go out on Saturday nights. Something with a long term plan and ambition that your parents tell their friends that you are ‘in’. But that just offered up even more places to fall asleep in I shouldn’t – as well as parties where I really could not be described as a grown up in any way, shape or form. I’m still not sure what a ‘grown up’ is, but the more I realise I now don’t really care, the more I have a sneaking suspicion I might be close to being one. So it’s not that far off from being a very small child. Just have the bare bases covered, and the rest is juice boxes all the way. LATEST 7 | 5

X

Factor winner Joe McElderry gets set to put on a dazzling coat of many colours as he steps in the title role of the UK’s longest running musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which plays at Theatre Royal Brighton from Tuesday 14 – Saturday 18 June. Having won sensational reviews and standing ovations at every performance since its inception almost 35 years ago, this production of the sparkling family musical has now sold an estimated 20 million tickets. This vibrant and exciting retelling of the biblical story about Joseph, his eleven brothers and the coat of many colours sings out to young and old alike, with a score which is crammed wall to wall with hits, including Jacob and Sons, Close Every Door and Any Dream Will Do. Joe McElderry was just 18 when he won the sixth series of The X Factor. He then went to

P

think we might be dating. I mean we go out and just have dinner alone sometimes. We also spend days alone together. When we’re not together we text each other – a lot. I guess I’m fine without the label. It’s not like I need to have an eternity ring and for Peyton to stay exclusive, since I think he really wouldn’t have time to meet anyone else anyway. Then again, I’m not sure if I would want to commit since I like how things are right now. He’s a good friend I can talk to and we have fun. We always have good nights out and it’s handy that he’s someone who can fit around me. What’s putting me off is that he’s not over his ex and I don’t want to get involved with that mess. I don’t want to step on anybody’s toes. If anything, it’s just an indication that this thing we are doing shouldn’t be labelled, since he’s clearly got things to deal with. Yet knowing what we are doing might be nice. It might be nice to know where I stand. I spoke to one of my friends last night and she thinks I might be his rebound. Alarm bells went off in my head, but it makes a lot of sense considering we hooked up when he split up. I’ve just never been the reboundee before. It made me wonder – is he just using me to fill a space where his ex used to be? To be honest I’m not sure if I mind. I would prefer it if he didn’t use me as an emotional punching bag sometimes. I would also prefer it if I got a chance to rant. At the end of the day no one’s getting hurt, so maybe I’m just overthinking it. Maybe dating is easier than I’m making it out to be. Maybe it’s best to just keep the label blank.

hew, well that's May out of the way for another year. Not that I am complaining, well not much. I love the month, love the Brighton Festival and all the opportunities that it brings to see incredible arts and entertainment from around the world as well as from our enormously talented local creative population. I also love the work that I do with the Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival. Ten days of great food and great fun, what is not to like, apart from my rapidly expanding waist measurement. And all this comes on top of my regular activity, the columns here in The Latest and my very pleasant time on Latest TV hosting Latest Homes Live, I Want To Live Here. That really is proving to be great fun and a big thank you to those viewers who have come up to me in the street to say how much they are enjoying the show. I think I am becoming addicted to having an audience too, those of you who watch me on TV, not only the property show but my two food programmes and my occasional appearances on the news. I love hosting our food events at the festival, presenting the amazing cooking that local chefs produce from the kitchens of the city's much feted culinary scene. I love popping into the BBC too, to chat food and drink with guests on Alison Fearns' excellent show, that really is fun. Most of all though I like being in the marquee on Hove Lawns where for two days I have the honour of sharing the stage with some extraordinary culinary talents and presenting them to an audience of food lovers, a big thank you to all of those chefs for coming along and taking the time and trouble to demonstrate their skills. My biggest thank you goes to a young lady, Miranda, who for the last few years has sat in the front row and always brings me cakes that she has made herself! Thank you all for making my life such fun. Time to put my feet up now.

PAULA OBRIEN > The gifted psychic medium chats to Samantha Harman about her nationwide tour ‘Destiny’

S

ome people are sceptical about those who claim to have the ability to converse with the dead. However, I have always been fascinated by the concept of mediumship, so was immensely excited to meet Paula Obrien a psychic medium, who is currently embarking on her nationwide tour: 'Destiny'. I immediately liked her, Paula is an unusual combination of incredibly down to earth with an ethereal air. Conversing with her is akin to chatting with your favourite auntie, the one who really makes you laugh, but will also give you incredibly accurate advice. She clearly loves what she does and demonstrates great empathy for those who come to her looking for help. So much so, that she is

“ I can never be

surprised with a birthday gift ”

renowned for crying during her shows, when relaying messages to the audience. When did you first realise that you had the ability to communicate with spirits? When I was two, my parents bought this big house that used to be a vicarage and part of the church. It was really old, had three floors, seven bedrooms and we only needed three of them. Throughout the whole three years that we lived there, my

mum managed to move me into every bedroom, because I would wake up at three in the morning and have tea parties with spirits, and be playing and laughing and singing. Mum said she'd walk in and there would be me, sat around a table, with no dolls or teddy bears, chatting to empty chairs. So you’re psychic as well? Yes, it drives my family mad, I can never be surprised with a birthday gift, I always know every year what I’m getting! When I first started to see spirits, I was standing in the kitchen and thought my dad had walked past me and gone down into the cellar. The next minute, he came back out of the bar. I said to him: “How on earth did you do that? It was only two minutes ago that you walked into the cellar!” He replied: “Paula, I've been in the bar the whole night.” It was then I realised I hadn't seen my dad, I'd seen someone else. I was 16 when that happened. When did you start using your gift? My brother Keith died in 1989, and that's when my gift became more organised. He was my best friend, it was a tragic passing, he was the first person in my world to die. It completely and utterly altered everything. A policeman knocked on the door at about 10pm and told us the news, that Keith had died. It was maybe 4am before I went back to bed as I was in total shock. Keith came and sat on

LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

the edge of my bed, he held my hand, it was as plain as day, he said: “I promise you, there won't be a day that goes by when you won't see me”. It was incredible, I told my mum I'd just had a visit from Keith and she wasn't surprised. From then on my ability grew, but it wasn’t until 2000 that I started using my gift. How long have you been doing shows and touring? Since 2013. I did many varied things prior to that. My mum died in 2004, she never got over the death of my brother Keith. She died the day before I gave birth to my daughter, which was horrific. When the baby was born she was really poorly, so had to be in a neonatal unit. It was such a time of conflicting emotions. I then started seeing my mum too. I'd been doing psychic fairs and readings at home, which became disruptive, so I got a little shop. It was then that the following of people I had became very evident. We had a booking system and we'd only been open for a fortnight and were booked up for a whole year. When you do a show, how does it work? Do you just stand on stage and channel whatever comes through? In a few circumstances, I get information beforehand,

which I quite like. A couple of hours before I tend to get into a zone, sometimes things come to me on stage. The show is called Destiny, why is that? Because everything happens for a reason. An example of that being a woman who came to one of the shows, I asked how many of the audience were there by default, and this lady put her hand up. So I told her, I'm sure at some point tonight we'll know why you're here. Halfway through the second half, I got a message from her mum, which blew her away. She admitted that she was a huge sceptic prior to that. What do you love most about what you do? There's a lot of guilt surrounding the death of a loved one, sometimes people have a lot of regret. The nights for me are not just about getting a message through, that's one thing – the skill is, for people to walk out of the room after one of my shows feeling brilliant and leaving the guilt with me, and are then free to recall all the happy times.

righton has a long history of yoga and has become a hub for yoga teachers and complementary therapists. Since 2014, it is also home to a yoga festival. Now in its third year, this FREE festival has transformed into a big event, which will be held at the Brighton Dome’s Corn Exchange on 23 July. This year’s festival hopes to attract anyone interested in yoga, but especially those who have never tried yoga before. In order to give a broader view and understanding of what yoga is all about, the festival organisers have put together six episodes about the history and benefits of working both body and mind. The series of six yoga programmes is entitled For The Love Of Yoga, and is now being shown on Latest TV. Episodes will cover different aspects of yoga, from relaxation to strengthening the body, from reducing stress, to using yoga as birth preparation in pregnancy. Each episode will offer short practices for the viewers to join in with at home. The aim is to dispel myths and preconceptions, while introducing different styles of yoga. The programmes will show that there really is a yoga practice out there for everyone, regardless of age, sex or if suffering from health conditions. As the famous yogi and grandfather of modern yoga, T Krishnamacharya said: “If nothing else, we can still work with the breath.” Be sure to tune in, the show promises to be interesting, educational and transformative. he tenth season of Britain’s Got Talent has just finished and was won by a magician which made a nice change from a dancing dog. The show is full of glitz and glamour but I wondered, what is it really like for the people who appear as the 'talent' in the show? Then I remembered Brighton’s comedian and impressionist, Drew Cameron, had appeared on the show. So I thought I'd get the lowdown on the show from him. Are Ant and Dec as nice in person as they are on TV? Yes they are, they really are. What they are like on TV is exactly what they are like in person. Genuinely nice guys.

What made you go on BGT? It was very early on in the series and I was in two minds about doing it. There was a chance I could get more work and publicity from it or it could have the reverse effect. I really wasn't too happy about it but I decided to it anyway.

What comments did you get from the judges? I got to the end of my 3 minutes and I said at the end: "I was expecting to be buzzed off by now!" All the judges laughed. Piers Morgan said: "You are the comedian we've been waiting for". It was only season two of BGT and I really didn't know what to expect. Do you think you made the right choice going on BGT? I know some people have had negative experiences, but I think I was lucky and it turned out okay. entleman's Day at Brighton Racecourse was a fun affair, what's not to love about the buzz of a race meet, a few drinks and a few bets, especially if you happen to pick a winner. I loved the combination of those serious punters and those of us who were simply there for fun, and it is fun. We certainly backed a winner by dining in Silks restaurant. There were plenty of options on the course of course and it was quite fun seeing ladies in posh frocks and fascinators tucking into giant burgers and sausage and chips. Up in Silks Restaurant the scene was far more elegant. First I would like to say that the service is exemplary, the waiting staff that work these affairs are real professionals, they know exactly what to do and how to behave, they are friendly and efficient and I tip my hat to them. The food was good too. I loved my deconstructed smoked haddock tart, it was delicate in texture and full of flavour. Mr S chose a terrine and was equally impressed by his dish which was tasty and stylishly presented. Moving on I chose the pulled pork bon bon with braised pork belly and a black pudding puree. It was a hearty plate of food, generous in size and in flavours. The potato fondant was

good too and so too the strangely cuboid carrot. There were broccoli florets, not so exciting and a good apple sauce that I would have liked more of. Mr S chose the stuffed chicken supreme and enjoyed it too, and cleaned his plate which is always a good sign. And whilst dining the nice Tote lady explained how the betting thing works to him as he was a race meet virgin. When it came time to choose dessert I was very tempted by the cheese, tempted until I read that it included a smoked cheese, a flavour I have never come to terms with – so I chose the cherry chocolate bombe. This included a trio of choccy delights, one of which was a scary sounding, but delicious tasting white chocolate smoothie. Mr S chose the gooseberry meringue tart and polished off the lot, he has a hearty appetite to say the least. I have to say that I looked on with envy, I love meringue and I love gooseberries. We drank a bottle of very good Picpoul, sensibly priced and finished with coffees before heading down to the track to watch some of our chosen nags stagger in last. Truth is I did have one winner on the course but I had several winners in the restaurant.

dramatic monologue. The language is carefully ‘antiqued’, the decorous grammar punctuated with ‘perchance’ and ‘methinks’ enough for us to feel we’d just wallowed in five hours of the original play. Shakespeare’s poetic rhythms are exchanged for adept comic timing and the pace, like Claudius’ ego, is relentless. Claudius slyly wins our attention and, like a royal Warren Mitchell or Steven Berkoff, carefully spins his apologia. We all know the ending but that in no way spoils this well crafted, erudite and entertaining romp through Elsinore. Sweet Waterfront 2, 30 May 2016 Andrew Connal ★★★★★

> Mammal Hands – Instrumental jazz groovers are in town

I

f you like GoGo Penguin, you just might well feel the same way about the similarly monikered Mammal Hands, a three piece who have just released their second album, ‘Floa’, on the same label as the aforementioned, on Gondwana Records. An old Norse word that means to deluge or to flow, ‘Floa’ is a neat summation of their music. Gondwana's founder Matthew Halsall has also produced ‘Floa’, while members of the Gondwana Orchestra also contributed. Nick Smart (piano), Jess Barrett (drums/tabla) and Jordan Smart (sax) fuse jazz, folk and electronica in creating their hypnotic groove based pieces that has won over the likes of Bonobo, Gilles Peterson and Jamie Cullum. Drawing on a rich well of influences from Sufi and shamanic African trance music, Irish and Eastern European folk music, to Steve Reich, Pharaoh Sanders, and Philip Glass and more contemporary electronica influences, their music is built around deceptively simple sounding ideas that are lent power through the use of repetition and rhythmic loops. They have been compared to both Portico Quartet and GoGo Penguin for the way in which they navigate the choppy waters between contemporary dance music and jazz. Latest Music Bar, 8 June, 8pm, £8

> Shine Your Light: a fully accessible choir for adults with disabilities & health conditions

S

hine Your Light Choir is Brighton and Hove's first pan disability choir for adults with disabilities and health conditions of all kinds, and carers. Supported by Scope and People's Health Trust, the organisers felt that more could be done to help all disabled people access the health benefits of singing. There is a fun article on the BBC website which discusses some of the benefits in fact: including how singing can get more oxygen into the blood, increase feelgood hormones and improve mental health (www.bbc.co.uk/guides/zcc7tyc). Josephine, a wheelchair user involved in Shine Your Light who has Fibromyalgia, says that even when in a lot of pain she feels better after singing. I joined a choir for the first time myself this year and had a great time with a friendly gang so can personally recommend the giving it a go. Shine Your Light offers a safe space to enjoy your voice, connect with others and simply have fun. The songs are taught by ear so there is no need to be able to read music. The choir is led by Natural Voice Practitioner HannahRose Tristram, an organisation which aims to do away with some people's notion that they are “nonsingers” due to previous experiences of criticism and judgment. The venue has level access and an accessible toilet and kitchen, and the choir sing simple, uplifting songs of various moods and genres so everyone should feel welcome. Shine Your Light Choir, Hove Methodist Church, Portland Road, Tues 14 June 122pm, Dropin £5/£4 conc. Nonparticipating supporter free. Contact harriet.cavanagh@scope.org.uk or 07436 830997 to discuss access or other requirements. Sessions may continue in the summer, search Shine Your Light Choir on Facebook for information about sessions after 28th June.

DY COMNE ANGLE VICTORIA

> Let them eat cake...

I

t’s been a long time since Sarah Millican headlined Sidesplitters over at The Providence on Western Road, with tickets costing just £3 on the door on a Sunday. The venue is now a Co Op, and Ms Millican – in the ten years since that gig – has gone from strength to strength, with radio, TV and awards, the most recent of which was from comedy industry standard Chortle for the website she was involved in the launch of – Standard Issue.

So Sarah Millican is not a lady to let the grass grow under her feet. Which is handy as in this, her latest show, she is venturing ‘outside’. And it’s not just for a cake picnic. For three nights Sarah Millican will take up residence

at the Brighton Dome’s Concert Hall and explain how certain things have changed in her life. She now has ‘outside slippers’ and can tell the difference between a chaffinch and a tit, although not between an owl and her husband’s asthma. More finely tuned, spoton comic material and ponderings of the high calibre we have come to expect from Ms Millican. Welcome back. BRIGHTON’S ARTY > Atmospheric & lyrical works at Gallery40

A

re there any truly unspoiled exotic locations left to discover? That is the question Alan McLeod poses as he returns to Gloucester Road’s popup art space Gallery40 with an exhibition full of atmospheric and lyrical works. The collection is united by the belief that “after the plundering, years of neglect and souvenir hunting, all that remains are fragments of architectural and decorative surfaces”. And the result is a body of intriguing abstracts with layers of interest to captivate the viewer.

Alan’s early career was in textile design. Perhaps this explains the subtle synergy he creates between decorative elements and textured surfaces to imbue each work with mystery and meaning using gouache, gold paint and goldleaf. Until 12 June. www.artymagazines.com
