England by MC Buzz England's all time From the vaults of Great Britain, comes the greatest of all time England's all time 11, put into a compact rhyme And first of all we got Banks in goal, Gordon Banks was the man who withstood them all and in defence centre back just to be exact We got our own Gary Cahill to represent that Alongside Jackie Charlton who comes from way back And a real tough player that can play any flank Left and right well that was close So I went with Gary Neville and Danny Rose In midfield I had Beckham of course and on either side of him I kept a real strong force I had Charlton again and his first name Bobby! And on the other side I had Paul Gasoigne onnit!! So when my strikes squad were ready, I was ready to name them I had so many options to enter the game den Then it struck me? Who's the greatest player of all time... So I had Geoff Hurst as the striker for prime time And on either side to deliver the balls right I had John Barnes and I had Ian Wright Strikers in their own right but who could stop? John Barnes, Ian Wright and of course Geoff Hurst So there's my all time England 11 Now have your pick of the greatest team player Since 66 I know I left out Moore, Keegan, Lineker, but can't pick em all So now I'm gonna leave you with the team on the grid and watch England's all time 11 as they take to the pitch

> Man on top of a man on top of a man... new and mysterious addition has recently arrived on Brighton seafront, in the form of three levitating men, who appear to be balancing on footballs! The clever ‘floating man’ optical illusion, has been seen in cities all over the world and while it certainly looks impressive, the trick is all a matter of simple physics and the ability to sit still!

ou’re special. When did that become a doubleedged sword of a compliment? What with Radiohead singing how incredibly ‘special’ you are, as well as rosettes being given out for decades labelled ‘special’ once actual race places in school sports days had been won... well, it just doesn’t feel that special to be special anymore. The Special Olympics does a lot to address this. These athletes are incredibly special, just so impressive and awe inspiring. Proper puts my ‘walking instead of taking the bus to work’ minimum fitness efforts into perspective. But when I am so dumbstruck by the magic of a friend, or the fabulousness of a day together in good company – and I call out the word ‘special’ in praise and honour of what I’m feeling... well, it doesn’t seem to land with my admired people quite as I might hope. And I know this from the looks on their faces. You know the ones. I’d like us to make a concerted effort, if it’s not too much bother, to reclaim the shine of ‘special’. Add it’s sparkle again with regular nonsarcastic use. Make ‘special’ special again. LATEST 7 | 5

> Olivia Evans’ top tips for tackling the sales
H
ave you ever hit the sales and felt overwhelmed by the amount of bargains, crowds and countless piles of clothes? You wouldn't be alone. Along with the excitement of finding great items at a discount price comes the danger of impulse buys. I’m sure most of us are guilty of buying an item at 75% off that is now gathering dust in the back of your wardrobe, the tags still intact. Does this sound familiar? Here are my top tips to ensure that you don’t slip into the buy now, regret later scenario and you get the most out of your shop this summer. It’s all in the prep Sorting through your wardrobe is the perfect way to work out what you have. You can get a clear idea of what you have enough of and what items you’re lacking. Make two piles, one for the charity shop or to sell and the other to keep. Make a list A list will ensure a targeted approach while bargain hunting. Once you've had a sort out, you can narrow down what you want to look for, whether you want to replace a pair of jeans or invest in a new bag. This will narrow your shop down to specifics and you will eliminate panic buys. Shop smart Avoid illfitting clothes. Is the garment two sizes too big or small? Leave it, the likelihood of you getting the time to alter it is unlikely. What to look out for? Look out for high quality pieces with great fabrics, don't get swayed by the price tag! Accessories Bags are a great piece to look out for in sales as you can be a bit playful and they tend not to date. Classic items Look out for timeless pieces and avoid trenddriven items, denim and shoes are always good items to look out for.

> First ever transgender newscaster
L
atest TV is proud to announce that we have appointed Sophie Cook, as an onscreen newscaster and Head of Diversity for for Latest TV. This is big news for us, for TV and for progress, as Sophie Cook is the first ever transgender news anchor in the UK and Europe. Latest TV's CEO, Bill Smith, said: “Brighton is an island of sanity in what can often be seen as an ocean of intolerance. Latest TV brought the first exclusively LGBT show to terrestrial television, Q Tube and now we are appointing Sophie Cook to lead the LGBT TV news revolution!” Sophie said of her new role: "It's a great honour for me to be given this opportunity by Latest TV, and is a real step forward for transgender visibility and awareness. Brighton and Hove is a unique city, full of amazing diversity and I'm proud to be able to reflect this by bringing the news to everyone in the city on Freeview, channel 7, Virgin Media 159 and across the world through www.thelatest.co.uk." Ex newspaper editor, Premier League football and rock photographer, former member of the RAF, motorbike racer and suicide survivor, Sophie Cook hit the headlines in January after becoming the first transgender woman to work in the Premier League. Last summer, when coming out as transgender to her club, AFC Bournemouth, Sophie feared that she would lose everything. The club and the fans were very supportive and now Sophie speaks at conferences nationwide, including Wembley Stadium about these fears and how she overcame them. Sophie is currently making a documentary about football versus homophobia, for Latest TV – coming soon!

> On the scene with Stephanie Starlet
O
ne of the most glamorous people I know is Miss Alternative Brighton, Stephanie Starlet. Stephanie was probably one of the first friends I made when I moved to Brighton. She's a familiar face on Brighton's club scene and recently appeared on Channel 4’s Hollyoaks.
Are you performing at Brighton Pride this year? Well all the details aren't confirmed just yet. But what I do know is that I will be Djing at the Funky Fish for two nights over Pride. I can't wait, it's going to be fabulous! Have you got any other projects in the pipeline? Yes, I'm so excited, I've got a new club night at Subline, on St James Street, starting soon. It's a mixed night and I'll be playing a mix of pop and 80's music. It's going to be a really fun night. I'm also busy working on my music projects too. You can listen on Soundcloud: 'The Starlet Foundation'.

Hollyoaks recently, how was that? ”
You were on Hollyoaks recently, how was that? All the cast were so lovely and so down to Earth. It was filmed at Lime Studios in Liverpool, which was actually the building for the kids’ show Grange Hill! I'll be back in the show again soon, which I'm really looking forward to. I loved working with Tamara Hall (aka Grace Black), on Hollyoaks – she's such a nice girl. You were also in the iconic film Kinky Boots... That's right. We filmed for three days in Soho. It was a great experience and it's wonderful to be in such a great film. www.soundcloud.com/the starletfoundation LATEST 7 | 9

I
o it’s Greg’s birthday and both Peyton and I are invited along with a lot of our friends. This is the first time I’ve met with them both socially. They both know about each other and the whole situation is actually quite civilised. Peyton knows that Greg likes me and has some suspicion that I might be interested in him. He even keeps egging me on to ask him out which doesn’t settle well with me even considering our arrangement. Greg knows that I spend a lot of time with Peyton and that I stay over at his and is actually quite okay with it and doesn’t stop flirting with me. Greg asks me questions about it all. Like, how are you two? What are you? When I answer as best as I can he always seems okay with it, I guess this is 21st century dating. So while I’ve been invited here to celebrate one of the guy’s birthdays, I turned up with the other. Peyton didn’t really know anyone, so I said I would go with him since his place was on the way anyway. At the bar it was all civil and Greg bought a round, nothing out of the ordinary. It wasn’t until Peyton had a little too many drinks and started being affectionate when I knew something was up. When I asked Peyton: “What on earth are you doing?” he just said: “I think we would actually be good together”. I knew it was too good to be true. It wasn’t until then that I knew I didn’t want to date him properly. It was as if when I got close to acting on emotions, that I knew I just couldn’t do it. It wasn’t what I signed up for. In a drunken stupor he walked home alone and I stayed out with the others. I wasn’t going to let him ruin my night and he certainly didn’t.

found myself watching the highlights of the trooping of the colour a few weeks ago, an odd thing to do as I have little time for the royal family on the whole, nor of the military. I have to say though that it was fascinating to watch, the precision, the uniforms and above all the quality of the military bands, that is of course excepting the pipe bands. I have a hatred of bagpipes that borders on racism. There she was, 90 years old and on her feet for far longer than I would choose to be, putting on a rather a good show despite wearing the most green outfit. Perhaps the regal equivalent of a hivis jacket. It really worked, noone was going to miss her. This element of royal tradition is extraordinary but it did make me wonder if we are really making the most of it. I am confident that the pomp and pageantry that surrounds the royal family is a massive draw for tourism – but could we be doing more? Perhaps we should look at selling a franchise of the whole to a big entertainment organisation, something on a global scale like Disney, I mean look at their successes. Can you see it? Disney Windsor? Daily tours, trains loaded with tourists clicking away. HRH looky likies on the corners doing the wave? Buy your own knighthood (or perhaps that already exists). Just imagine the merchandising opportunities, the icecream sales, the ticket revenues… Of course I am jesting, how undignified would that be, would the world buy into it? Would tourists pose for a selfie with an imitation Prince Philip? I suspect not, despite the fact that for years and years people have done the same with a human in a fake fur Mickey Mouse costume. I would be the first to admit that the Queen works harder than your average 70 year old let alone 90 year old and yes, she does have lots of privilege and luxury. But maybe at 90 she should be taking things easier, enjoying her horses and making the kids really pull their weight.

ANDREW KAY DINES OUT
Indian Chaula’s Brighton
@latestandrew
> Life’s a Breeze
W
ith a restaurant scene here in Brighton that is riding the crest of a fabulous wave of cutting edge cuisine, we are often spoiled for choice when it comes to dining out. Stylish modern cuisine is one thing and I love it, but there are moments when I want something else. Breeze is an ideal option. So by 'something else' what do I mean? Well what I really mean is a restaurant with a simple menu, starters, mains and puddings and a menu that will deliver three satisfying plates of food and satisfy an appetite. What I want in addition is a kitchen that cares about those dishes and the produce that they use. Breeze does just that. It's the sort of place that you can get a satisfying meal, a well cooked meal and at a sensible price. I was joined for dinner by Mr S who has a respectably good appetite and I felt confident that it would be satisfied. He started by ordering the beetroot risotto balls. When they arrived he looked on in amazement at the size of the portion, but he made light work of them and the cheesy sauce. Having been before I chose the chilli squid which was as tender as one might hope and bathed in a chilli sauce with just the right amount of attitude. I like chilli but not when it damages your palate to the detriment of the rest of your meal. Mr S moved on to a plate of pork belly which came with kale, apple puree and chorizo mash. How many of you have ordered belly pork in a
restaurant and been presented with a tiny slab of meat. Not at Breeze, by other venue's standards this was a roast for four, really, it was very large and came with incredible crisp crackling. Mr L of course made steady progress as he cleared his plate. I chose the roast free range chicken which was equally generous and came on a bed of stewed lentils with red pepper, sweet potato and chorizo and all topped with crispy kale. It was a great twist on a classic combination, unctuous and very satisfying. The chicken supreme would have quite easily fed two very well indeed. By now you might be getting that Breeze's food is both well made and satisfying, a great place for a hearty appetite. And on that note we should have stopped, but in the interest of my readers I pushed Mr S to have a pudding, a very good apple crumble with ice cream and I had a well made creme brulee with cranberries. To drink we started with Aperol Spritz then a bottle of house red, very good, and finished with two piping hot espressos. Breeze looks good, is ideal for large parties and is very sensibly priced. The service is excellent too, efficient and friendly. Over the last ten years Breeze has come very highly recommended by the kids who take over my review pages each summer, but I would say that whilst obviously being a great family restaurant, it is a good place for us grown ups to go when we want a comforting dining experience. Joe McElderry stepped into the lead role of Joseph, with ease. His flawless vocals coupled with the boyish charm that shot him to X Factor fame, ensured that he was the perfect choice. A special mention must also be given to Lucy Kay, of Britain's Got Talent fame, who was cast as The Narrator. Lucy demonstrated sensational vocal ability and at times stole the show. Fantastic stage production, and a phenomenal supporting cast all helped deliver a high energy, amusing and touching perfomance. All in all, a fantastic family night out, not to be missed! > Country Ways – Carlene Carter/Midnight Union Band/Carter Sampson
B
righton is somewhat a home from home for all things country, roots and americana and here are some treats in store the next couple of weeks. A third generation member of the Carter family, Carlene Carter has been up onstage since the age of four. Her grandmother was Maybelle Carter, her mother June Carter (who married and performed with Johnny Cash for most of her life) and with her and her aunts, Helen and Anita, they were The Carter Sisters. Now 60, she has a long history of hit writing and critically acclaimed albums that span country, rock and americana. Her new album ‘Carter Girl’ is a brilliant country/roots/rock'n'roll affair that showcases what a talent she still is, one who has never been in the shadows of her more illustrious mother and stepfather. The album features contributions from Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. Of a more contemporary hue, there's a fine double bill at the end of month featuring Carter Sampson (The 'Queen of Oklahoma') and Midnight Union Band. Sampson also has an illustrious family member in the form of Roy Orbison, but again she has talent in abundance as can be heard on her recently released fourth fulllength album, ‘Wilder Side’, a big sounding countryrock album that speaks of the open road and human emotions. Headlining is the newish Irish americanafolkrootsrock outfit Midnight Union Band, a band who deliver a mix of heartfelt love songs and politically charged convictions, and whose brilliant debut album ‘Of Life and Lesser Evils’ was released in 2014. Carlene Carter, Thurs 23 June, Con Club, Lewes, 7pm, £16/Midnight Union Band & Carter Sampson, Wed 29 June, Prince Albert, Brighton, 8pm, £8

> Crossing Borders festival: celebrating cultural and musical diversity
L
ast week I previewed some classical highlights from the Crossing Borders festival and this week I present a further selection of what’s on offer. The festival is musically strong (and ethically comforting in these disturbing, confrontational times) so I wanted to again highlight the cultural riches that open borders can bring us. There are some brilliant affordable options, including a double bill of Jali Burama Mbye (the ‘Kora King’) with Herbie Flowers (double bass) followed by Kurdish singer Suna Alan with Group Raye showcasing music from Gambia to Mesopotamia and Anatolia. (Latest Music Bar, Tues 21 June, 8pm, £8). There’s also a world music singing workshop with Judith Silver: all are welcome and no previous experience is necessary so it’s a unique chance to try out a different form of singing. (Latest Music Bar, Wed 22 June, 6pm, £3) Jazz singers/broadcasters Ian Shaw and Claire Martin are joined by Alice Russell and Natureboy to present some music with a local flavour in a packed show at The Old Market. Grupo Lokito will follow: a contemporary fusion of Congolese and Cuban music, which sees guitars, rhythmic grooves and keyboards combine to danceable effect. (The Old Market, Thurs 23 June, 8pm, £15) Jali Fily Cissokho is a fantastic Senegalese kora player who crosses musical boundaries himself: check out his recent performance at Wood Festival on YouTube for a taste of his vibrant, rockinflected tunes. The evening will also feature a showing of the live enigmatic music/theatre project called Dr Spira, which promises to be a “strange brew of music with echoes of punk, jazz, rock and blues”. COMEDY VICTORIA NANGLE
> Twist and shout
M
any years ago Danielle Ward was the marvellously twisted mastermind behind cult musicals Psister Psycho and Gutted: A Revengers Tragedy – both loved by anyone who caught them for their all too short runs, due to being jampacked with talented comedians as cast members (who else remembers Sara Pascoe as the slowwitted housemaid in Gutted?). Now Ward is creating new brilliant ensemble pieces with her
comedy horror podcast of sketches, songs and stories, again combining her own smart and dark comedy with some very talented friends. This is Spookywookycocktailhour. Recorded live, and this month joined by her Gutted

star Colin Hoult – who played every one of the half a dozen malevolent family victims – with his own creations; as well as co creator of both Psister Psycho and Gutted – the talented Martin White; and also Anna Crilly, as seen in Lead Balloon and Anna and Katy. In short, you’re in for a true treat of comedy from an awardwinning cast, working to a devilmaycare format. What a delight! > Brighton Art Market in community gardens
W
e love a good mooch around an openair art market – and there’s a real festival feel to Brighton’s newest venue in the Brighthelm community gardens. So head there this Saturday 25 June for an art fest and so much more. The advantage of being outdoors means that as well as an eclectic display of creativity and the opportunity to buy direct from the artists, you can also look forward to being entertained by live performances. So far BAM! (Brighton Art Market) has
hosted a circus skills troupe, live music, Punch & Judy and much more. There’s a cafe area, too, so plenty of reasons to while away a few hours in the sunshine (hopefully!). If you can’t make this month’s BAM!, the next event will be 30 July. www.artymagazines.com
