don’t know about you, but just when I’m about to go to sleep is when my mind spins off at 100mph with a list of umpteen things I’ve got to do. It happens when I’m in yoga class too. A peaceful mind has been eluding me. And I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one. Looking around I seem to be in the majority that it’s almost a physical wrench to put down my smartphone and look at the real world around me. If I’m on a bus journey I’ll check Facebook, maybe play a bit of Yahtzee, even – perversely – check out the weather online. Um... I could always look out of the window. Online is safe and away from the unpredicatability of ‘out in the world’. But equally, when I do literally force myself to put down the device and step away from the pixels, it’s like taking a massive breath of fresh air, and a little bit exciting that anything could happen. It’s up to me. So I’ve collected a bus timetable for trips up to the Dyke. I’ll take my phone on my walk, but I’ll put it in my backpack, well out of reach. And let my gaze wander further than 12 inches in front of my nose. LATEST 7 | 5

PASSION & DRIVE! > Patrick Marber’s AFTER MISS JULIE, with Helen George, is to visit the Theatre Royal Brighton
A
brand new version of Patrick Marber’s AFTER MISS JULIE, with Helen George in the title role, is to visit the Theatre Royal Brighton in July as part of a UK tour, prior to a West End transfer. Set in 1945 in an English country house, on the eve of Labour’s landslide victory at the end of the Second World
War, this compelling and erotic psychological thriller is inspired by Strindberg’s 1888 masterpiece, ‘Miss Julie’. During a summer ball, the beautiful daughter of the peer who owns the house, wanders into the servant’s quarters. As she flirts with her father’s handsome chauffeur, indifferent to the presence of his fiancée, what begins as
gameplaying ignites into passion with devastating consequences. Helen George plays Miss Julie. Well known for her role as Trixie Franklin in ‘Call the Midwife’, she won huge praise for her performances on
‘Strictly Come Dancing’. Patrick Marber‘s plays include DEALER’S CHOICE, which won the 1995 Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy, and the huge international hit, CLOSER, which won the Evening Standard award for Best Comedy, the Critics' Circle and Olivier awards for Best New Play and was made into a BAFTA Awardwinning film in 2004. Director Anthony Banks was an associate director at the NT until 2014 where he commissioned and developed a hundred new plays for NT Connections. Don’t miss the opportunity to see this gripping drama at the Theatre Royal Brighton before it transfers to the West End.

I
s I write, we are two complete match days into Euro 2016 – a tournament that has so far exhibited all that is true and wholesome about the human spirit. By which I mean the complete opposite. Being as big a football fan as I am in times like these, is often a bit like trying to introduce a bit of a loud “character” to your group of mates, who you know they won't get on well with. I feel I must take some responsibility for the widespread hooliganism, given that I predicted it a couple of columns ago. Far worse than any of that, however, is preening Portuguese insufferabot Cristiano Ronaldo's treatment of plucky, yet beautiful Iceland. When they had the brass neck not to allow him to score loads of goals and take his shirt off and writhe around, he walked off the pitch without shaking anyone's hand or, inconceivably, swapping shirts with anyone. This would have, in theory, involved literally his favourite thing in the world – not wearing a shirt for a period of time. His tunnelvisioned treachery has not gone unpunished. Grand Mistress Karma ensured that in Portugal's next match against Austria, he missed more chances than Hugh Grant with an annoying American woman in a Richard Curtis film. In a way I'm writing to you in some sort of odd time capsule, one in which England are still in the Euros and the people of Britain have yet to extricate their motherland from the European Union. So, dear reader, treat this column as a postcard from a forgotten utopian realm, for it is doubtless no longer one that exists at the time of reading. NB: No, Chris Martin. You are not allowed to steal "Postcards From A Forgotten Realm" for the name of your band's next criminally forgettable album.

sat at home recently and realised that I needed a little colour in my life. Not colour in the sense of wild nights out and flamboyant friends, no, I have plenty of that thank you very much. No I wanted colour as in colour. My home is lovely, really lovely but I inherited walls in a palette of colours that could only be described as drab, pale washedout hints of tints of nothingness. Well I'm not that kind of a person am I, there's nothing pale or washedout about me, so I embarked on a plan to reinvent my home. I live underground, estate agents might like to call it lower ground floor but we all know that it's a basement. A very nice basement it is but one has to take into account that at times it can lack light. That lack of light was working against me as I wanted bold colours, I wanted bright cyclamen pink and fiery orange, I wanted a charcoal grey that was close buddies with black. What to do? Well a trip to a local DIY emporium solved the problem as I found exactly the colours that I wanted in the Valspar range at a very sensible price. I bought them and went home knowing that it was only half a problem solved, but how would I apply that colour. Well to start I applied them with a set of Valspar brushes that I am very impressed with, three colours in and they still clean up perfectly each time without losing any of their bristles. When it came to the walls I had to make a decision, yes I wanted the colours but I also wanted the light. It suddenly came to me, use the colours as statements in the transitional spaces between rooms. I now have a stunning orange hall, all surfaces! And I have a vibrant pink lobby between three other rooms that pulses with a vibrant energy that puts a smile on my face. The charcoal grey wall adds a depth to my living room and makes the huge marbled slate fireplace less imposing. Result!

ello Brighton and the sunny South Coast! I’m David Elphick and this is Bmusic. We are passionate about shining a light on the South Coast’s musical scene and hopefully some of you already tune into either our Noise Reel or Brighton Album Chart Show each month. For those who haven’t yet discovered us, here is an idea of what to expect from the shows we produce for Latest TV. Noise Reel is a music news and entertainment show, mostly focused on the underground rather than commercial scene. We have been on air since the very first week on Latest TV – where the time has gone? – bringing you a friendly roundup of what’s going on across Brighton and the South Coast. We cover a broad range of genres via artist interviews, news, live performances and event previews and highlights, so there really is something for everyone. The Brighton Album Chart Show (or BACS) is a musicvideo chart show collaboration between Resident Music (Kensington Gardens) and Bmusic. We count down the top 10 bestselling physical albums from this cult indiemusic store, with music videos chosen and introduced by our host, James Fox (Juice FM and Totally Radio). The chart is completely compiled from purchases made by the coolest music community in the world and we think that therefore, it must be the coolest chart show on telly – you can quote us on that! If you’re a fan of either show please tell us, and if you would like to get involved with Bmusic in some way we’d love to hear from you via our social media links below. www.thisisBmusic.com/facebook.com/BmusicTV

I
do love going to my hairdresser in Kemp Town, not only to get my hair done, but I just never know who I'm going to bump into! This week in the chair next to me, was stand up comedian, Phil Jerrod, who has just been on a six month tour, with comedian Romesh Ranganathan. Phil is now preparing to head off to The Edinburgh Festival with his new show. How did you get into stand up? I had often thought about doing stand up but never did it. Then I worked at Sussex University Book Shop and my boss and I both wanted to give stand up a go. My boss put on an open mic night and it went from there. Doing stand up comedy is moreish. It's like an addictive computer game. I've been doing stand up exactly four years yesterday!
“ I was going to
write a show called ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ ”
What's your new show 'Hypocrite' about? Well, I was going to write a show called ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ about the good and bad points of my character, but as I wrote, it got darker. The show is now a character assassination about me being an awful person and a dreadful hypocrite! Of course none of it’s true as I'm a nice person really. Are you previewing 'Hypocrite' in Brighton? Yes. I'll be at The Blue Man, on 7 July. I'm at the Komedia, on 11 July and at Caroline Of Brunswick, on 28 July. For more info visit: www.philjerrod.com Phil Jerrod will be at the Edinburgh Festival for the month of August, at The Cellar, Pleasance Courtyard. LATEST 7 | 9

hat better way to part for the continent and four days of great food than to meet an old friend for lunch at one of our city's finest dining rooms. I met Mr J at The Ginger Man for a much overdue meal, much overdue in every sense as it was a long time since I had dined at this much loved restaurant that was at the forefront of Brighton's culinary renaissance, and some time since Mr J and I had had a chance to talk books and catch up. Well I am pleased to report that The Ginger Man is still firing on all four cylinders, as is Mr J, as we were about to embark on lunch of extraordinary deliciousness and style. First out some very good bread and some very good butter, always a great opener in my books. Neither of us wanted to eat bread but both of us did, a good sign. Then came a small cup of lobster bisque topped with puffed rice, both delicious on their own but perhaps the rice a little too overpowering for the delicious soup. Mr J then had the Crab dish – rillete, smoked salmon, oyster cracker, confit tomatoes, and red pepper gazpacho, and was more than impressed. It was a generous plate of food that managed to look stylish and at the same time satisfying. The food in so many places is now dainty to the point of nonexistent, not here. I discovered this with my stunning starter of
wood pigeon breast, with ham hock Scotch egg, heritage carrots, salt baked celeriac and nettle puree which could have passed as a main course in lesser restaurants. It was quite extraordinarily good and with only that dish I would have left happy. For our main course we were both drawn to the wild sea trout with Jersey royals and wild asparagus with hollandaise. My word it was good, I mean really good. The fish was perfectly cooked and full of flavour. The potatoes had that somewhat elusive Jersey royal flavour that is so often lacking these days and the wild asparagus was not only delicious but plentiful, enough on the plate to get a real taste rather than a few fronds abandoned there as garnish. On the side came a perfect hollandaise, a hollandaise to shame the viscous gloop that so often masquerades as the real thing in lesser establishments. And it had been flashed under a flame in the classical way, a detail I know but a good one. We drank one glass of wine, but it was a good wine, Ridgeview Bloomsbury and, having declined dessert but accepted a good espresso, we left more than happy and very impressed. etroleaning but one who have found their groove, The MIlk released one of the albums of 2015 in the form of ‘Favourite Worry’, which was made with the help of The Bee's Paul Butler. "He is Captain Analogue," says Ricky Nunn, singer and guitarist. "It was a sixteenth century barn with original stone walls and timber frames, that he had turned into an amazing studio with a live room. It was the most beautiful recording experience any of us could have wished for. It was intimidating, but in a good way, that we had a producer who could play all the instruments as well as, sometimes better, than we can. "We wanted to make something like a film soundtrack, we wanted tunes that sounded like they could have come from a movie. ‘Taxi Driver’ was one of our references, not in terms of the story, but the amazing soundtrack (Bernard Hermann)." Formed by four childhood friends in Essex, it took a while before they found their way to soul and funk. "We were ****ing around in the practice rooms at school, initially doing Beatles covers and simple four chord stuff, and it grew from there. We're like conjoined twins, we don't know any different now. We've grown around each other musically. We had to get rid of that teenage angst phase. But after five or six years, we started playing what we were listening to, the cleaner end of soul, the Stax, Atlantic and Motown soul of the 60s and 70s, and now with a tiny bit of afrobeat and jazz. We now like making dark soul funk records." Love Supreme, 13 July. www.lovesupremefestival.com

> Cunning Little Vixen at Glyndebourne: a colourful and joyous spectacle
J
onathan Kent's production of Britten's ‘Turn Of The Screw’ at Glyndebourne was a stunning beginning for my journey in discovering the beauty of opera. I have seen many more operas since then, but ‘Saul’ at Glyndebourne last year was the undoubted peak for me so far: a gloriously melodic, complete work that was utterly beguiling and moving. Glyndebourne is therefore very dear to me, and I'm looking forward to attending as many performances as I can this summer. At the time of writing there are still tickets available for Janáček's ‘Cunning Little Vixen’ at Glyndebourne Festival. I don't like to spoil much plot, but CLV was composed between 1921 to 1923 and as such is fairly modern in terms of classical style. The action revolves around animals in a forest and was inspired by a daily comic in a Czech newspaper, and the comic tone is reflected in this production. The music is jaunty and striking, reflecting its composer's interest in folk music and rhythms, so a classical newcomer might be more bowled over than they would be by more traditional opera works. The formal dress and beautiful grounds of Glyndebourne are understandably part of the Festival's appeal since it's a fun day out for old and young alike to enjoy. I always like to highlight just how enjoyable the opera is in itself however, incorporating live music, acting, choreography, staging, dance and more in a dazzling whole. Melly Still's production meshes dance and mime into the storytelling and has been described as “colourful and joyous” by the Wall Street Journal, so it sounds like a perfect way to try out the unique art form this summer. ne of the many advantages to having a longstanding monthly comedy night hosted by the ever growinginprofileand accolades Zoe Lyons, is that the comedians she gets on are striving too keep up with her. So they’re pretty top notch. This month is a real treat as the calibre is so high it’s tricky to work out who’s headlining, as every one of them is already breaking through to the small screen mainstream whist keeping their own
comedic voices. Lou Sanders is quirky, off kilter and generally bonkers – in a good way. She supported Katherine Ryan last year, which might give you a clue as to her influences. Tom Allen is familiar to many BBC Radio 4 fans as the voice of Pip Bin in the
