T
hree football pitches and seating for 3,500 spectators will be installed in Glasgow’s George Square this month, when the city hosts The Homeless World Cup. The event will run from 10th to the 16th July and will feature 48 men's and 16 women's teams from 52 countries. Glasgow is hosting the 14th edition of the tournament. The first one took place in Graz, Austria, in 2003. Scotland last hosted in 2005, in Edinburgh. The tournament's ethos is to inspire homeless people to change their lives. The Homeless World Cup was set up by the International Network of Street Papers and Mel Young, founder of the Big Issue in Scotland. In a recent BBC interview, Mr Young said: “George Square wil provide a unique location for the 2016 tournament. Our mission is to bring the tournament to the centre of the cities we visit, because homelessness isn't something that should be tucked away". He added: "We need to talk about it, therefore being here was very important. The nature of the site means it's an interesting build which has involved a real multiagency approach, but we're confident that when the wrappers come off for real in July, Glasgow will be amazed and ready to join a real celebration." Timetable of events: Sunday 10th July 12301400 (90’) Homeless World Cup Opening ceremony and matches live from George Square Monday – Friday 11th – 15th July 17001800 (60’) Peter Martin presenting live matches from George Square Monday – Thursday 11th – 14th July 19001930 (30’) Peter Martin presenting live highlight shows from George Square Friday 15th July 18301930 (60’) Peter Martin presenting live highlights show from George Square Saturday 16th July 19002015 (75’) Homeless World Cup Final live from George Square

U
niquely presented through memoir, essay and ephemera, The Haunted Moustache is a brandnew book from David Bramwell, best known as creator of the Cheeky Guides and host of the Catalyst Club. The Haunted Moustache began life as a oneman show, winning comedy and theatre awards during Brighton Festival in 2008 and was dramatised for BBC Radio 3 in 2011, winning a Sony Silver Award. For those who don’t know the story, it is the fantastical and ‘83% true’ account of a unique inheritance: a centuryold moustache which David received from an eccentric aunt when he first moved to Brighton. Keen to discover more about its former owner Bramwell embarked on a ten year journey which drew him into the underbelly of Brighton – its séances, spiritual churches and a seedy basement club – where he unwittingly becomes the host of a modernday freak show. The memoir takes a darker turn when he joins a cult, dabbles with mindaltering psychedelics and comes close to being murdered. The Haunted Moustache also pays tribute to a wealth of Brighton’s counterculture heroes, from Genesis POrridge to former Dali model, Drako Zarhazar. Like the Cheeky Guide it is a true celebration of the incorrigible spirit of Brighton and even comes with a glowing endorsement from comic book writer, Alan Moore: “The Haunted Moustache is a genuinely marvellous demonstration of how beautifully the mechanism of reality functions, if you're paying sufficient attention. Neurologically, this will light you up like a Christmas tree.” David will be at the Bookish Supper Salon in July 20th. Tickets include a hardback copy of the book, glass of sangria and canapes. DOGGY TALES > Floyd needs a forever home
E
ach week Latest 7 will regale you with tales about the dogs who live in Brighton (via their owners) and also introduce you to rescue dogs, looking for forever homes. First up is Floyd, a six year old Jack Russell, Beagle cross, who currently resides at Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare. This sweetnatured boy is looking for his forever home, maybe you can help? Val Suleski, Head Of Kennels at Raystede, said: “Floyd is a handsome and very quirky little chap! He will
make someone a wonderful, loyal companion”. Having spent lots of time with his previous male owner, he was brought to Raystede when circumstances sadly changed. He has tried a few new homes but nothing suits because he likes to bond with one person and not share, he can also get anxious when left alone. Floyd is fun to walk, very sociable and likes most other dogs (but not cats). He does have a stubborn streak which is typical for his breed. He’s a favourite with the volunteers

he etiquette of Facebook is a tricky thing. I mostly use it to post if I’ve done something particularly ridiculous or joyful – like spontaneously burst into song about baked potatoes for dinner, or fallen in a manner that would have a toddler laughing with brilliant abandon and lack of balance. Of course I also share articles, pictures and videos of cute pandas too. The difficulty comes when there’s something really important happening in my personal life or the news, something that touches me – and I don’t say a word about it on social media. The last few months have not been without these occasions. From the appalling events in Orlando to politically goalpost changing Brexit, as well as celebrity – and noncelebrity – deaths, there’s been plenty to affect me. And I love that others have shared how they feel so passionately so publicly. My timeline shouts and thinks and feels gloriously. And it’s not that I don’t. It’s just these things are so very raw, that I’d hate to censor my friends their flippant barbs, but I won’t receive them. So instead, I feel privately. And admire those that can shout. LATEST 7 | 5

t's Sunday evening at Glastonbury 2016, for several reasons one of the most emotional festivals there may ever have been. PJ Harvey stops her terrifyingly flawless set half way through to read John Donne's ‘No Man Is An Island’, its words as prescient now as they were 392 years ago. Ever since that collaboration of two of England's greatest artists of the last 500 years, I've not been able to look at the ongoing newsworthy chaos without thinking one thing over and over: in times like these, thank whatever put us here for the arts. However you voted in the referendum, only the most psychopathic could disagree that everything that's happened since has been objectively hideous. The racial attacks, the political duplicity, the economic uncertainty. Where do you go when you allow yourself to entertain the selfish notion that the world has failed you? The media? No, surely you drown yourself in great music, television, radio, theatre, books, galleries, sport (yes, sport can be art), dance. The best thing is, everyone's favourite kind of escape is slightly different. I might like weeping in a field near a powerful speaker system, but you might like smothering your naked body in paint and rolling around on a canvas. And that's great! That oneminute poem recital by one of my alltime idols has done more to make me think things might be alright than anything someone in a suit on the telly could. When it all seems too much, how fortunate we are that some people choose to be creative rather than destructive, expressive rather than insular. Sometimes you need someone else to express what you’re feeling back to you in a way you could never achieve yourself. You need catharsis, and you can’t be cathartic without art. That would make you cathic, and that’s not a word.

y life is, and has been for as long as I can remember, peppered with the charming, and sometimes not so charming, efforts of PRs, yes the driven public relations pixies who feed us with the news of… well the news of what's new. Some are good, some are excellent and some are, well let's not go there, the good ones know who they are and the bad ones do a good job of pretending that they are good ones, that's PR for you. Many years ago I had to deal with a PR company that was held in very high esteem. I was designing book covers back then and had just done a cover for a book called ‘The Green Consumer Guide’. It was destined to be a huge title and indeed it was. The editor felt that the potential required the attentions of a top PR company, and not our in house team. One was duly appointed and charged with creating that "PR" buzz, which of course they dictated required a big party. The book was edited and designed and the cover was approved, a beautifully executed drawing of our planet that was also a beautifully drawn apple. Imagine my face when the PR company delivered the party invites with a drawing of a rose growing through the cracks in a pavement. What the…? Was this Ab Fab preempted? It's now twenty four years since Eddy (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley) first tottered onto our screens and now ‘Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie’ arrives. In the face of a media firestorm after an attempt to schmooze Kate Moss goes spectacularly awry, PR agent Eddy and magazine editor Patsy escape to their spiritual home – the French Riviera. The result is a funinthesun caper where even Botox won’t stop you smiling. Break out the Bolly and the Stoly and catch it at Picturehouse's very stylish Duke's at Komedia.

aving recently joined the Latest TV news team as newscaster and Head of Diversity, one of the first things I was involved with was filming a pilot of some new titles for the news featuring the whole team. After capturing all of the required shots someone suggested doing a few 'fun' clips and the ‘Friends’ theme tune was mentioned. Having been the singer in various bands over the years I volunteered to sing whilst we all did the iconic handclap. As we walked back to the studio I reflected on how appropriate the line that I'd sung was for my life, you see 'no one told me life was gonna be this way.' As someone that had known they were transgender from the age of seven, and struggled with coming to terms with it for decades, I'd been terrified that by coming out I was going to lose everything: friends, family, career. The reality though has proven to me that when you live an authentic life sometimes the universe rewards you. I came out to the Premiership players of AFC Bournemouth last season and was greeted with applause. I still enjoy an amazing relationship with the band that I photograph, The Libertines. I've spoken at conferences all over the country, including Wembley Stadium and the TUC, and my relationship with my kids is better than ever. Now I have a new challenge, and it's one that I'd never have dreamt of before my transition. I'm very proud to have been given this opportunity and I feel a great responsibility to help break down the prejudice that transgender people face daily. I love my city and I love my life and I'm looking forward to sharing it with you!

> Edinburgh comedy previews The Brighton Festival may be over, but coming up soon is the Edinburgh Festival. I do realise that Edinburgh is hardly down the road from Brighton and Southern Rail can hardly be relied on to get us to London, let alone Scotland ! However, do not fear. Brighton is currently awash not only in rain, but also previews. It's a time for acts to polish their shows by doing previews before heading up to The Edinburgh Festival. One of the venues that has been running these previews is The Caroline of Brunswick (jointly with OiOi comedy) on Ditchling Road, Brighton, upstairs in its 60 seat theatre. If you are a comedy fan this is the place to be. In July and the beginning of August, acts including Seann Walsh, Charlie Baker (EastEnders) Stephen Carlin and Steve Hewlett (Britain's Got Talent) plus many more, will be previewing their shows upstairs at The Caroline. So, as the weather is a washout and we’re out of the Euros, go and check out some of these brilliant shows before they go to Edinburgh and have a good laugh! If you wish to book tickets or check out who else is on, then go to: www.carolineofbrunswick.co.uk/comedy Tickets will be available on the door too. www.oioicomedy.com

PIFF THE MAGIC DRAGON > The badtempered comic magician talks to Victoria Nangle about Vegas and more So – congratulations on your intentional success on America’s Got Talent (2015 finalist). How has life changed since the crowd went wild for you then? It's been unbelievable. Mr Piffles and I went from nobodies to overnight success. It's safe to see we are now the most famous Magic Dragon / Chihuahua Act in America. Since the show we've been on the road every week selling out theatres, casinos and comedy clubs. One club we did 12 shows in a week just to keep up with demand. Each Monday – Wednesday we have our show at the iconic Flamingo of Las Vegas, and I think it's safe to say I'm the first English Magic Dragon to headline a show on the strip. Australia and even further afield. Like Wales.
“ I have no idea
what you are talking about. I'm a genuine magic dragon. Therefore I'm naked. ”
You’ve been playing to Las Vegas. How are the crowds different there to the rest of America? Las Vegas is a very special place because the crowds come from all over the world. So although there is a strong American contingent, every night there are fans in from Canada, England, Scotland,
Any tips to Tapeface (aka Boy With Tape On His Face), after his smash hit at AGT this year? He's a good friend of the Piff crew. We've been talking about it ever since he thought about auditioning. He's going to do great. Any tips for anyone looking to win in Vegas? Don't gamble! The house always wins. There's a reason the casinos are so fancy. You’ve blown the socks off Penn & Teller (Fool Us), and supported Mumford & Sons. Impressively diverse. Who would you still hanker to share a bill with?

Britney. She performs across the street. The Original Princess. Any celebrities Mr Piffles had an especial reaction to? I understand Simon Cowell particularly likes small dogs… Shania Twain's horse. Seriously. She had one in her show and Mr Piffles didn't like it. He started a bark off during ‘Still the One’, and got escorted out. Everyone knows magic exists. If you could have any superpower, what would it be and how would you use it? Free snacks for everyone!! What trick would you most like to pull off, if logistics, physics and reality were no obstacle?
The old Princesses and Gold out of nowhere trick. Who do you admire and why? I have no idea what you are talking about. I'm a genuine magic dragon. Therefore I'm naked. What are your plans for the next 12 months? Tour tour tour. And keep working in Las Vegas. And Open PiffLand. What are your plans for the next 12 minutes? McDonald's Drive Thru. Living the dream!

f you asked me if I liked pizzas a few years ago I would almost certainly have said that I could take them or leave them. Then I went to Sicily and after a pizza covered in speck and crushed pistachio nuts I was won over. I have of course always thought that Pizza Express is a reliable option when travelling, but of late Brighton has seen an influx of great pizza joints and the newest, hot from its London mother ship, is no exception. I left it a few weeks before going along to Franco Manca and then went twice in a week. Something about it just worked, not least the great space, seemingly plucked from nowhere in the centre of the city, it has that cool, slightly industrial look that works so well. It also has extremely friendly and helpful staff for whom nothing seemed too much trouble. The menu is simple, a very short list of options and then a blackboard with one meat and one vegetarian special. On my first visit I was joined by Ms C, a trencherwoman after my own heart and an ideal guest always. We started by sharing a platter of amazingly good fennel salami and a whole mozzarella of the very highest quality. I loved both, she preferred the sausage which was okay except that I felt guilty eating any more as I was scoffing that whole cheese, ah well, what are friends for.
For her main she chose the ham pizza and added extra caramelised onions, a great choice and she also opted to have some of their homemade tomato sauce as quite a few of the pizzas are white, as in having no tomato sauce. I chose the special, which was white too, and topped with extremely good sweet pork loin. The oven is of course wood fired and the resulting crust is crisp and quite delicious, not to be trimmed away and left for sure. I had a glass of good hearty red and Ms C drank fizzy water – such restraint! A few days later I was back with column regular Mr L. We skipped a starter and went straight for a pizza. This time we both chose from the blackboard, Mr L the one that I had tried before whilst I went for the vegetarian option topped with stilton, parmesan and goat curd to which I added capers. It was amazingly good, packed with punchy flavours and deeply satisfying. We drank a good bottle of red too, and a sensibly priced one. Price of course is always important so let me say that these pizzas are very inexpensive, both under £8 which has to be seen as excellent value. Mr L also had chocolate cake, which is a favourite of his and loved that too. I went for a double espresso, piping hot and ever so tasty. I cannot recommend this enough, the menu is simple but packed with details of the ingredients’ provenance, and the price… well go find out for yourselves! T
wo of the UK’s favourite actors lead the cast in one of Noël Coward’s funniest comedies as a brand new production of Present Laughter arrives at Theatre Royal Brighton. This brand new production stars Samuel West as the flamboyant and selfobsessed actor, Garry Essendine, and Phyllis Logan as Monica Reed, his long suffering secretary. Charming diva Garry Essendine is determined to disregard his advancing years by revelling in endless tantrums and casual affairs. He may be teetering reluctantly towards middle age but everyone is infatuated by Garry, and his antics and rampant flirtations require the most careful handling by those closest to him. About to depart for Africa, he finds himself besieged by a bevy of would be seductresses, not to mention his acerbic secretary, his estranged wife, and an obsessed young playwright. As he attempts to disentangle himself from their clutches and demands, the sparkling comedy escalates.

Noël Coward’s semi autobiographical comedy, set in the glamorous world of theatre, is a gloriously witty portrait of the life that whirled around Coward in his heyday and is widely considered to be one of his best loved works. Filled with the brilliant lines of a master craftsman, this new production blends razor sharp wit, dazzlingly funny dialogue, captivating characters and fabulous sets and costumes. Samuel West has performed extensively on stage and screen. He played Frank Edwards in all four series of ITV’s hit drama series Mr Selfridge and, earlier this year, performed in BBC’s The Hollow Crown, marking Shakespeare’s anniversary. Phyllis Logan’s numerous television credits include all six series of the multiaward winning ITV drama Downton Abbey, in which she played the housekeeper Mrs Hughes, voted by The Radio Times as their favourite character of the entire series. winning hybrid of Folds' trademark irony with modern classical accompaniment. His back catalogue was given a reboot with jaunty, theatrical arrangements and he soliloquised on plagiarism and how to write the blues between songs while applying finger plasters. A riotous swing number ended the set before a solo encore and an explosive ensemble 'Army' received a standing ovation. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 23 June 2016 Steve Clements ★★★★★

> Spectrum: Kristin McClement headlines
B
righton Dome project Spectrum cultivates and supports the vibrant music scene of Brighton in partnership with Resident Records. They hold monthly gigs in the Brighton Dome Studio Theatre, and July sees local modern folk artists Kristin McClement headline. Kristin’s music is born of two separate worlds: the vast shapeshifting landscape of her childhood South Africa engraved with the melancholic romance of old England's sacred woodland, rivers and valleys. Her debut album The Wild Grips was released in February 2015 via Brightonbased independent label Willkommen Records. Produced by Christian Hardy of The Leisure Society, The Wild Grips is a wideeyed rendering of modern folk song where the acoustic and the electronic rub alongside. Whilst making the album, Kristin and the band were influenced as much by artists like PJ Harvey and Portishead as they were by the pure sounds of Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen. As well as touring throughout Europe, she has shared stages with Benjamin Clementine, Laura Marling, Jessica Pratt and Sam Lee, to name just a few. In support is The Boy Who Kicked Pigs, the alter ego of Karl Bray, onetime member of Kovak. For more information about Spectrum: its music nights, artist residencies, seminars and other ways they help to nurture the local music and arts scenes, please visit: www.brightondome.org/join_in/live_projects/spectrum. Jack Redman
@latestjoef
> World premiere from a local composer, concerning insects
J
ust as the full orchestral season in Brighton has recently concluded, the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra offer the third iteration of their Brighton Connections series over the summer to keep us entertained. As with all Brighton Connections concerts, local composers' work will be performed alongside more familiar chamber pieces. Jack Redman is one of those young musical firecrackers who makes one question one's age and achievements in befuddlement. At the age of 18, he has appeared at Royal Albert Hall, Wigmore Hall and the Southbank Centre as well as at local churches and his place of study: Lancing College. The world premiere of his piece Insects for 3 sees him delve into new compositional territory in specifically writing for violin, viola and cello. The piece is split into small movements representing different insects so perhaps we can expect skittering soundscapes, or ominously crawling strings? I’m intrigued to find out... The HandelHalvorsen Passacaglia for violin and cello is a fast, vibrant piece that will make for a perfect showcase of the performers' technical prowess. Mozart's duo for violin and viola no.1 has a more emotional, expansive sweep about it however that is all the more startling for its being expressed through just two intertwining string parts. Bach's cello suite no.1 is probably the most recognisable solo cello piece of music in the world, but is no less beautiful and beguiling for its popularity and omnipresence. The varied programme ensures that you’ll get a chance to sample classic pieces compared with Jack Redman's new work for a generous price, and in a nice setting too. Brighton Connections, Sun 17 July, 5pm, Brighton Unitarian Church, £15, www.brightonticketshop.com or 01273 709709

COMEDY VICTORIA NANGLE
> A novel idea
F
resh comedy comes in all shapes and sizes. ‘Fresh’ is new, and that’s interesting and a bit of a risk. With Edinburgh preview season well and truly upon us, as well as the mold of comedy frequently breaking free of the tried and tested format of a man and a mic there’s plenty to stretch the imagination and get stuck into. Over at Komedia, highlights this week are two double bills. Tuesday sees the pairing of the anarchic Alfie Brown
and funloving Damien Clark. Come back on Friday and you’ll catch the hotly tipped Pierre Novellie and accolade attentiongrabbing outsider Funmbi Omotayo. Pop over to the Caroline of Brunswick on Thursday for laid back veteran Carl Donnelly, followed by new
