> The many voices of Steve Hewlett and friends

R

ecently I had the pleasure of working at a festival with Steve Hewlett. You may remember Steve as the ventriloquist from Britain's Got Talent, with the infamous Simon Cowell and Sinitta puppets. Steve is coming to do a show at The Caroline of Brunswick in Brighton on the 4th of August, which should not be missed! How old were you when you started ventriloquism? I started learning aged 12, after watching a TV ventriloquist win New Faces in 1987: Jimmy Tamley. He's also one of the nicest and funniest men I've ever met, oh and my best mate! I first performed at my school assembly for 150 pupils, it was scary as I was a shy kid, so teachers and classmates were shocked that I took to the stage. It went quite well. The second show I performed at was in Basingstoke, at a charity event hosted by Alan Titchmarsh. 25 years later I reminded him of this story as he introduced me on his ITV daytime show The Alan Titchmarsh Show, in 2014.

“ Sinitta was speechless ”

How did Simon Cowell and Sinitta react to seeing puppets of themselves on BGT? Simon apparently doesn't like ventriloquists, but the way I rearranged my act for the show won him over both times in the live shows. Sinitta was speechless but when it was all over I was invited to her home on quite a few occasions to film some wacky YouTube ideas. She is lovely and her partner Jason makes a mean Homemade Pizza! DOGGY TALES > Ramsey rescued me right back...

E

ach week Latest 7 will regale you with tales about the dogs who live in Brighton (via their owners) and also introduce you to rescue dogs, looking for forever homes. This week Sarah Morgan, introduces her gorgeous dog Ramsey. “I got Ramsey at 18 months old from Allsorts Rescue, in December 2014. He is a clever Collie crossed with a sociable German Spitz. We haven't looked back – he is medium build, enthusiastic but gentle and arrived with immaculate house training.

Ramsey’s best feature is a pompom tail, which arcs in a huge fluffy plume. It was almost bald when he first came from the shelter in Southern Ireland, but his coat is now fully plush after a better diet, gentle combing and organic coconut oil treatments. “Alertness and gregarious friendliness set Ramsey apart. He is popular on BorrowMyDoggy and enjoys calling on local shopkeepers for treats and a big fuss. Ramsey has introduced me to all my neighbours when they

on’t even think about the weather – the summer holidays are fast approaching and it’s got nothing to do with the sunshine. School is almost out, and whether you’re an Alice Cooper dude or Daphne & Celeste poppettes, it’s time to start making plans. Alright, so not everyone is a student, teacher or parent, but that doesn’t mean the end of term doesn’t affect the rest of us too. Package holiday prices skyrocket, offices start playing that tessellation game of fitting everyone’s time off around what can still keep business ticking over, and every cinema screening before ‘bedtime’ is packed with jubilant kids happy to see blockbusters instead of maths homework. Speaking as an auntie, this is the time when I am most likely to get visits and offschedule outings thrown my way – which I hasten to add that I love. Meeting the family off the train at the station, the oldest makes a beeline for the carousel and the youngest for the penny arcades, it’s like I’ve flashed back into one of British Rail’s retro posters. It’s a treat to be a snapshot of this family life. It certainly makes my sun shine. LATEST 7 | 5

L

et It Be celebrates the music of the world’s most successful rock‘n’roll band in a spectacular concert charting the band’s meteoric rise from their humble beginnings in postwar England at Liverpool’s The Cavern Club, through to the success of Hard Day’s Night, their appearance at Shea Stadium, Sgt. Pepper and the Magical Mystery Tour. A cast of talented musicians plays the Fab Four, wowing audiences with their effortless and indistinguishable portrayal of John, Paul,

ating doesn’t come naturally to me. I don’t like following dating etiquette or playing mind games with people. I usually confuse people with how blunt and open I can be on a first date. I guess I’ve been doing it wrong. In my head guys don’t have to pull the chair out for me and pay the bill, chivalry was never alive in my eyes. A sense of humour and a caring attitude regardless of societal norms goes a long way. For years I never bothered with meals out and instead met up for a coffee, a pint or maybe a trip to the cinema at a push. I just wanted to hang out without the hang ups of finding what to wear or how to act. This whole dating scene has never made sense to me. The first time I got asked “out” I actually laughed since I didn’t believe what I was hearing. I was only ten and the poor boy had asked his female friend to ask me, so he didn’t really have much of a chance. More than 15 years ago I was clueless and confused. At the time I seriously thought that his friend was teasing me for having a crush. Looking back it was probably a good thing since I’m still just as clueless. Then again the clues I have managed to find I don’t agree with. I would much rather talk to those I’m attracted to like human beings and let them get to know me. I don’t wait two days to text people back, if I have something to tell them I do so. If I want to meet someone I don’t ask until they ask, I ask them. But this doesn’t mean that I don’t believe in romance!

ow time changes things. There was a time when I liked nothing more than a day out and a little retail therapy. Shopping back then was fun and I would often return home weighed down with bags and parcels. A bit like Doris Day on Madison Avenue. Not any more, the last time I decided to shop for clothes the only thing I came home weighed down with was a heavy heart, a heavy heart created by a heavy body. Yes, you got it, I could not find clothes that I liked that would fit. Of course there were clothes that would fit, but not ones that I would want to wear. I know that my body size is my responsibility, of course it is, but as I get older I see that I am not alone as an older man with an expanding waistline. Shame really as the clothes that I can now afford only come in sizes that will fit the young and slender. Funnily enough there is a definite upside to this, and that is that whilst my waist gets thicker so too does my bank balance. My size has restricted my spending. Conversely, were I to restrict my diet, my finances might also become slimmer. What a dilemma! Well there is no dilemma really, given that my work involves eating I am resigned to the bigger belly and buoyant bank balance. But more importantly, am I happy? Right now yes, most definitely. I have a good life, good friends and plenty to keep me occupied. Do I fret about the clothes thing? Not really, I find that with a little thought I can dress in a way that I like. Bright, bold and slightly mad as a look, one I generally adhere to, seems to defy the sizeist and youth obsessed fashion and retail industries.

Is hypnosis dangerous?

H

ypnosis is not a dangerous procedure. It’s not brainwashing or mind control. A therapist can’t make you do something embarrassing or something you don’t want to do. A hypnotic state allows you to be more open to discussion and suggestion. It can also improve the effectiveness of other treatments for a variety of conditions, including phobias, fears, stress, grief and loss. BEAUTY WAVE Editor, Samantha Harman, visits Kiehl’s Brighton for skin analysis

E

stablished by John Kiehl, 160 years ago, in New York's East Village, Kiehl’s started off life as an apothecary. The company have since gone from strength to strength, evolving into the expert global skincare provider that they are today. I have always been intrigued by the quirky medical interior and whitecoatclad assistants, so decided to pop in and try out the free skin analysis on offer. Adam Inglis, store manager, has been gracefully at the helm since the South Laine shop opened seven years ago. He certainly knows his stuff and promptly regaled me with the impressive tale of Kiehl’s history. As it turns out, Andy Warhol was a huge fan of Kiehl’s Blue Astringent Herbal Lotion, so I was in very salubrious company.

“ I generally aim for eight glasses of

water a day, with the occasional glass of Prosecco thrown in ”

I generally aim to drink eight glasses of water a day, with the occasional glass of Prosecco thrown in for good measure and have moisturised religiously throughout my adult years. However, the general stresses of modern life means that skin still sometimes doesn't get the hydration it requires. This is where the Kiehl's Dehydration Analyser Tool comes in. Its innovative technology gives a precise reading of your skin's moisture levels, which in turn determines what products are required in order to restore balance. To start the process, Adam pressed two tabs onto my face to measure the amount of sebum oil on my skin. After determining that my skin is slightly dry, we then discussed my skincare routine and any concerns I wanted to address. (My only concern is like most women over the age of 30: anti ageing). He then pressed the dehydration analyser tool against my face, which gave a reading of 34.7% moisture and 15.6% oil. Anything below 30% indicates severelydehydrated skin, 31 – 50% indicates slight dehydration. Being in the slight dehydration bracket, Adam prescribed a plethora of products to boost my skins hydration and keep the dreaded crows feet at bay. He tested each product on the back of my hand, so thankfully, I didn’t even need to remove my makeup. I left the shop with a bag full of samples: Ultra Facial Cleanser, Multi Corrective Cream, Line Reducing Eye Brightening Concentrate, Iris Activating Treatment Essence, Pollutant Defending Masque & Midnight Recovery Concentrate. One week later, my skin has certainly reaped the benefits, 10 | LATEST 7 WAVE

feeling smoother and more toned. I will admit to being dubious about using tailored skin care products in the past, suspecting they might be a ruse devised by companies in order to extract my money. However, Kiehls have changed my mind, I am now a believer. www.kiehls.co.uk, 22 Dukes Lane, Brighton, BN1 1BG 01273 735635 @KiehlsUK

righton is saturated with tattoo parlours and deciding where to go can be confusing to say the least. Eden Tattoo and Piercing Studio, located at Cocoon Healing Arts Centre, is a refreshing change to its (possibly) intimidating counterparts. The relaxed friendly vibe and allfemale team, provide the perfect environment in secluded surroundings for first time tattooer's and veterans alike. The before and after care advise is second to none, as are the products used: Clean Ink and Quantum Inks. Artist Julie Jooke, has been tattooing for four years. Prior to this she studied illustration and technical arts at Belgium’s equivalent of The Royal Academy of Arts. After graduation she decided to pursue her childhood dream of becoming a tattoo artist and undertook an apprenticeship. Needless to say, I felt that I was in very safe and creative hands!

Having already gone under the needle a few years ago, I had become incredibly disenchanted with my tattoo. The colours (which I no longer liked) had begun to fade JJ at work and some of the definition was also lost. I didn't want a cover up, just to improve what was already there. I explained this to JJ, who photographed my tattoo and sent me a drawing of the fabulous revised version a day later. I booked the appointment immediately and am extremely pleased with the results. The sachet of ‘Sorry Mum’ tattoo butter that I was given not only smells divine, but also accelerated the healing process. I would wholeheartedly recommend booking a consultation today.

W

hen Thomasina Myers won Masterchef and announced that she would open a Mexican street food restaurant I was impressed by the ambition. Could she, or indeed would she do it? Well she did, not just once but eventually creating a chain of restaurants that have now reached Brighton. I have in the past been somewhat dismissive of Mexican cuisine, but it would seem that this was my mistake, based on some pretty poor offerings in the past. Over the last few years I have grown to like it far more. Wahaca has confirmed that there is far more to Mexican food than I had ever thought. I went along with Ms McD for a Saturday lunch and things kicked off well with an excellent margarita and a mojito. Our waiter, Jordan, was delightful and we were very impressed by the speed of the service, ideal at lunchtime yes, but there was no pressure to rush either. The menu is fairly long and if I had one criticism, rather difficult to navigate, the design could be clearer in my view and although there are guides they are not that easy to find. What we did find was a set menu feast that seemed like a great option for novices – and it certainly was. Of course that was before Jordan popped

the Postit of daily specials on the table. Well I could not resist a Cornish crab taco so we added that to the feast. Food arrives as and when it is ready, not a problem for two hungry people and the first dish to arrive was corn bread with honey butter, what a revelation, I want it often. What followed was truly delicious and very satisfying. We loved the scallop & MSC shrimp ceviche, a vibrant and piquant dish. The pork pibil tacos were loaded with succulent spicy meat and the chipotle chicken quesadilla was a satisfyingly unctuous delight. Ms McDactus loved the cactus & courgette tacos but I preferred the summer pea & mint empanadas, I could have eaten them over and over again, and I confess to making a pig of myself with both the sweet potatoes and finally the churros which arrived with both the rich chocolate sauce and a cup of the dulce de leche. After the cocktails we drank a rich beer and finished with great coffee (I stirred my square of chilli chocolate into my latte to great effect). The feast at 34 was generous and a great way to find your footing and next time I plan to go off piste – and have more of those empanadas. STAGE

Thriller Live!

Stunning The Punters

> The unmissable George Dillon

I

f you have never had the chance to see George Dillon in action then now is the time. 26 years ago, in the hot and hopeful summer after the Berlin Wall fell and before Saddam burned the oil wells of Kuwait, audiences and critics in Brighton and Edinburgh rushed to witness this young Brighton actor’s astonishing solo debut. Stunning the Last seen at the Gardner Punters is a Centre in 1997 that show, a breathtakingly triple bill of world arrogant name to premieres with an unashamed give to a show; it is title, is also entirely returning to The Old accurate.” Market in Hove for one night The Independent only. An outofwork actor's frustrations explode over breakfast, an exskinhead recalls an exuberant racist graffiti spree with a ghostly twist, and a wouldbe suicide sees a lost paradise and returns with a timeless message of hope for our uncaring world... Stunning the Punters (& Other Stories) is one man on a bare stage giving a bravura high energy performance in three tales of imagination run wild: Master of Café Society

by Steven Berkoff; Stunning the Punters by Robert Sproat; and George Dillon’s own adaptation of The Dream of a Ridiculous Man by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Since 1990, Brighton actor George Dillon has given nearly one thousand solo performances in seven highly acclaimed shows, including Berkoff’s Graft – Tales of an Actor (winner of a Herald ‘Angel’ award in 2000), The Gospel of Matthew, Judgement by Barry Collins and his own plays The Remembrance of Edgar Allan Poe and The Man Who Was Hamlet. He was most recently seen in Brighton starring in Adrian Bunting’s play Kemble’s Riot at B.O.A.T. “This is oneman theatre at its most intelligent and powerful. Three cheers for the creators of Thriller Live! For not weaving the brilliant repertoire of Michael Jackson around some threadbare plot. Seriously, the songs are good enough to stand alone. The energy on the stage was quite extraordinary, from the dancers and from the excellent vocalists. Add to this a blisteringly raunchy band who were more than up to the task of recreating the sounds of Tamla through disco and funk to his later epic balladeering days. The lead vocalists are all good, Angelica Allen has a great voice but from time to time she was swamped by the sound system. Adam J Bernard and Shaquille Hemmans are both accomplished vocalists who give their all throughout, and Sean Christopher certainly has all the moves. It is the vocal skill of Rory Taylor that steals the show, an amazing voice that sounds closest to Jackson’s in all its incarnations, funking brilliant! lending musical versatility, instrumental prowess, beautiful vocal harmonies and a premier rhythm section, the Easy Star AllStars have established themselves as one of the top international reggae acts on the scene today. Thanks to their bestselling tribute album releases, ‘Dub Side Of The Moon’ (2003), ‘Radiodread’ (2006), and ‘Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band’ (2009), the remix album ‘Dubber Side Of The Moon’ (2010), as well as original releases ‘Until That Day’ EP (2008) and ‘First Light’ (2011), the Easy Star AllStars have built a growing, dedicated fanbase throughout the world, bringing together fans of reggae, classic rock, dub and indie rock into one big family. Celebrating a decade since the release of their maverick re interpretation of Radiohead's seminal ‘OK Computer’ album, the highly regarded reggae outfit will return to the UK for a slew of live shows that will revisit the classic LP. The news comes as the band ready a special 10 year anniversary edition of the Radiodread album for release on 12 August 2016, which will include their first new material in nearly 4 years: a cover of the Radiohead hit 'High And Dry'. Garnering praise from fans, critics and, crucially, Thom Yorke and co. themselves, the ambitious Radiodread album saw the Easy Stars completely reimagine Radiohead's 1997 opus ‘OK Computer’ trackfortrack with reggae, dub and ska flavours, with guest vocals from the likes of Horace Andy, Toots & The Maytals and The Meditations. Concorde 2, 21 July, 7.30pm. £20

> Starboard Festival showcases the magic of Brighton Open Air Theatre for children

B

righton Open Air Theatre is an exciting, newish venue that you might like to visit over the summer, and Starboard Festival would be a great place to start. Local theatre maker Naomi Alexander came up with the idea of a new festival of theatre made with, by, and for children and young people after enjoying a performance at BOAT herself. Alexander explains that “I wanted to do something that would enable children and young people in the city to discover this magic for themselves and for BOAT to become part of their psycho geography of the city.” Brighton Dome presents the closing event: an intriguing play by Kilter Theatre called The Illuminating Times of the Darkling Society. The audience is encouraged to stay up late, pack a torch, and join a band of musicians and outsiders for an unusual expedition. Lina & Hersch (two siblings) try to find solace in the darkness of a strange, unwelcoming land while running away from mysterious creatures the Darklings. Inspired by 18th century astronomers William & Caroline Herschel, Kilter's performance style includes live music, pedal organ, cycle generators, mothlures and batdetectors. Kilter's previous production The Last Post was praised as “utterly charming, tender, funny & wistful” in a five star review by Exeunt magazine – and they are known for creating low carbon productions in unusual locations – so it will be great to see what they come up in the unique surroundings of BOAT this Saturday. The Illuminating Times of the Darkling Society, BOAT, Sat 16 July, Picnic from 7.30pm, £7, www.brightondome.org

t’s Edinburgh preview season, that much is obvious. The Scottish festival starts in August, and that is literally just around the corner, so it’s not so much that these shows are ‘diamonds in the rough’ but more ‘finetuning those Silver Phantoms’ at this stage in the game. And there’s a whole gaggle of them taking over Thursdays in Hove’s favourite bijoux venue – the Dukebox. This week sees Aidan Goatley (10 Films With My Dad) and John Robertson

(The Dark Room) bring their latest offerings to the theatre back room. With both already having received excellent responses when appearing in the Brighton Fringe in May, this is a diarymarker. Next week sees the double header of smart and funny

Juliet Meyer with the delightfully barmy Linda Larkin (the creation of award winning Sam Savage). And finally Douglas Walker and Simon Plotkin, with original comedy from out of leftfield. I

t’s been a pretty much beachfree summer for the House of Krog. What with the crap weather offering scant opportunities for sun (and Rioja) drenched Sunday basking – and the Dane being a bit of a wimp when it comes to bracing sea breezes. If the feeling is mutual then head to Hastings Art Forum from 26 July where inimitable artist and arty favourite Mark

Glassman has put together a new show inspired by his particular obsession ‘Shingle Beach’. The perfect way to get your fix of local seascapes – under cover. We love the way
