DOGGY TALES > Declan the dog has his own blog!

E

ach week Latest 7 will regale you with tales about the dogs who live in Brighton (via their owners) and also introduce you to rescue dogs, looking for forever homes. This week, meet Declan, who is owned by Rachel Bailey Palumbo... “We had just moved to the Cayman Islands the week before and were on Seven Mile Beach, in Grand Cayman. Every Sunday they bring down some of the Humane Society dogs for beach training, in the hope that tourists will see them and

want to adopt. “We'd previously seen him in the shelter and spotted him on the beach. He was very timid and wasn't a big fan of being stroked, but it was love at first sight, three days later we'd adopted him. “When he became part of our family we felt he should have a new name (he was called Saint). After many failed ideas ourselves, we started asking friends and a dear Irish friend came up with Declan. She's now officially his 'dog mother'. “Now he's been introduced

very day that I walk to work, you’ll see me with my headphones on, lost in my own reverie. Actually, even without my headphones I’m a bit of a space cadet. One time, when I was living round the corner from my mother, she had to literally jump in front of my path after calling my name non stop for 30 seconds to get my attention. I can be a bit dopey. These days, with the headphones, it’s not my own thoughts I’m lost in but those of bygone radio times. The iPlayer radio app is my best friend, meaning that I’ve got a nifty little collection of shows downloaded onto it that range from anything like Rhod Gilbert’s show on Radio Wales – mixing indie rock with comedy – to a magical step back in time (well, further than last Saturday’s Gilbert shenanigans) to the dulcet tones of Orson Welles revisiting his The Third Man persona Harry Lime way back in 1952. Not only does it save my everprecious data allowance, but it’s the perfect balance with gazing across The Level as I stride, or even having a private boogie up to Churchill Square. I’m not on commission, I’m just sharing the love for these aural treats. LATEST 7 | 5

HOLDING OUT FO R A H E RO > Rock’n’roll musical sensation Footloose is one of Theatre Royal Brighton’s highlights of the summer season

B

ased on the 1984 screen sensation starring Kevin Bacon, Footloose: The Musical tells the story of city boy Ren, who has to move to a rural backwater in America where dancing is banned. All hell breaks out as Ren breaks loose and soon has the whole town up on its feet. Featuring classic ‘80s hits including Holding Out for a Hero,

Almost Paradise, Let's Hear it for the Boy and the unforgettable title track. This brand new production bursts with youthful spirit, dazzling dance and electrifying music. When the film was released in 1984, it became the highest grossing February release in US film history. The soundtrack album ended the year long reign of Michael Jackson’s Thriller at number one and went on top album charts all over the world, eventually selling in excess of 17 million copies. Footloose was nominated for a Golden Globe, and both the title song and Let’s Hear It for the Boy received Academy Award nominations. Footloose: The Musical first opened on Broadway in 1998, where it ran for 709 performances, with a London production following in 2006, opening at the Novello Theatre following a UK Tour. Gareth Gates plays Willard. Gareth rose to fame through the inaugural series of Pop Idol in 2001, going on to sell over 5 million records worldwide and have hits across the globe. His version of Unchained Melody sold over a million copies in the UK and is the 3rd bestselling single

of the Noughties. Gareth is also the youngest evermale solo artist to debut at number 1. In 2014 Gareth appeared in the final series of Dancing on Ice, and joined boyband 5th Story as part of ITV’s second series of The Big Reunion, touring arenas with bands including Blue and Five. uch as I love my job as the magazine’s food and drink editor, nothing gives me greater pleasure than this annual feature, now in its eleventh year! Every summer, in time for the school holidays we gather together a group of future foodies and send them off on a mission to do what I do (and scarily they do it rather well). Their brief is pretty open, they can choose what they eat and drink, although we do say no to booze, and they report back – on almost every aspect. From the interiors, the staff

and of course the food, they love the food. And each year I am impressed by the fact that, on the whole, youngsters are adventurous, they’re not afraid of spice, or strange ingredients, they certainly want to eat what the grown ups eat and over the next few pages you will be able to read about their views. Many thanks to all the restaurants who joined in this year and to the parents who took their kids along to make all this possible. I’m delighted to read that so many of you like this selection of great local restaurants, all of which I love too.

BARDSLEY’S

BOHO GELATO

I

'd recommend this place for a small family outing. The waitresses were nice and there's a good variety of choices without skimping on the vegetarian options. I ordered the fishcake which was nicely seasoned and I quite liked the chips as I prefer them soft with plenty of potato. My mum had the haddock which she liked as the batter was crispy without being greasy and the fish itself was firm without being dry. I meant to take pictures but I ended up over halfway through my meal before remembering to and "had" to steal some of my mum’s chips. Kate McCourt

I

went to Boho Gelato for my review. My favourite flavour was apple and ginger. The lady who was serving us was called Maria and she let me try loads of different flavours such as pink lemonade, mango, Cherry Bakewell, spicy biscuit and cucumber and rose. I think this is the best ice cream and sorbet place I have ever been to. I love this shop. Also Maria let us keep all the spoons! I would rate this place 10/10 thank you Latest Homes for giving it to me. I will definitely be returning with the rest of my family. Harry Blood

CHAULA’S

he first thing I saw was the drink menu. It was so hard to choose because the options were unbelievable but in the end I went for an appletiser. Our waiter was so nice and polite and he helped us with all our questions. We were sitting on one of the many booths watching the tennis which coincidentally was on. The atmosphere was also calm and relaxing. For starter I had bruschetta which came speedily and was absolutely sunning. For main I had a chicken burger and chips which was absolutely spectacular and massive. For dessert I had chocolate fondant which I was in love with. I would rate this lovely place 100/10 it has been an amazing experience and there is definitely something for everyone. Izzy Blood

As we walked towards Chaula’s restaurant you could smell the food, and it was a really nice! Inside the restaurant, there were paintings on the wall, which were nice to look at. The lights were pretty and not too bright and there was Indian music which I really liked. We had poppadoms with dips while we looked at the menu. I liked the mint yoghurt best. For starters we chose vegetable samosas, chicken samosas and lamb tikka. They looked nice and came with salad as well. The lamb was really tender and wasn’t spicy. The samosas were crispy (a little bit spicy for me) but still tasted really good. The waiter helped me pick something for my main. We had palak paneer and lamb lucknovi (Dad had lamb dansak but I didn’t taste it), rice and a garlic naan bread. The rice was fluffy and delicious. The meat was really tender, there was quite a lot of meat too and the sauce was so nice. It wasn’t too spicy for me either. The paneer was nice, and the garlic naan was the best I’d ever tasted. I really enjoyed my meal and would definitely go back . Lilly Packham

hen I arrived the outside stood out and I liked their logo. When I walked in it was very colourful and straight away I felt like I was in India. For my meal I had nibbles to start with and I really enjoyed them. I then had chicken makhani with rice which was really nice and my mum had a lamb dish which she enjoyed. I had watermelon sorbet for my pudding which is made special for them and it was delicious. Everyone there was very friendly and always had smiles on their faces, the whole place felt very homely. CHILLI PICKLE

T

he restaurant is modern but with plenty of exotic colours which made it feel warm. To begin with, we had two types of poppadoms – roasted (which were spicy) & normal fried ones, which came with three types of dip, my dad loved the apple chutney one. For starters we ordered Pani Puri which were crispy puff shells with a spoonful of chickpea salad inside & pork dumplings which came with a spare rib soup which was delicious. All of the starters came with two or three little side dishes to dip things in which was nice. Main course, I had a chicken curry with naan bread and it was creamy and not too spicy which was perfect and my dad had a biryani. The portions were so big that we couldn't eat all of it though. For pudding we shared a banana ice cream with a popcorn crumble, which finished the meal off perfectly. The staff were very nice and explained all of the dishes to us when they arrived. I love Chilli Pickle. Johnny Windsor

onatello restaurant is nicely decorated and comfortable with plenty of tables. There are family photos and pictures of Brighton on the walls giving it a homely feel. The staff look smart in their uniform of t shirt and jeans and were really nice. They kept coming to our table to check we had everything we needed. I had calamari to start which was really good and the pizza i had after was simply amazing with lots of cheese on every piece. The ice cream sundae was awesome. I will be coming back soon. ish + Liquor is a seaside restaurant overlooking Brighton Pier. You can sit inside or outside, enjoy the sights and relax. When I got down there, my first impressions were that it looks calm and chilled out. It was a lovely summer evening and time to have some typical English food, fish and chips. I sat down at a safe, which I thought was a clever idea, and I looked at the menu. I saw straight away what I was going to have, obviously, it had to be a typical English fish and chips. The waiter came over with the fish and chips with my Diet Coke and it smelt absolutely delicious! And I got stuck in. Dad was taking pictures of me and a seagull flew down and almost took his fish! The fish was brilliant, the chips were amazing and the view was great. Other people were relaxing, having a good time! I loved the food, I loved the view and loved that it was chilled and relaxing. ave you been to the wonderful La Choza? If you haven’t you’re crazy, if you have, I like your style! When I stepped into this tasty restaurant it felt like I was in Mexico on the Day of the Dead, it was amazing. We (me, mum and my brother) had tortilla chips and spicy chicken wings, I was already liking this place after one bite, in spice heaven. Then I had an unusual slushy because it was mango. Yum! Now it was time to order, I had a spicy beef burrito, my brother had the kids menu chicken and cheese quesadilla. Out of nowhere a waiter came with some quality toys for my brother to keep him entertained. Then the food came. My burrito came in silver wrapping, I opened it and I saw an amazing wrap filled with delicious meat, it was a little bit smoky with some spice and was really tasty. All the food was brilliant. Big thanks to the waiters too, they’re awesome. See ya folks! Stanley Sperring

he design was really nice, Moksha means liberation, which we thought was a very clever name. We were served by Sky, a very sweet man with great tattoos. He recommended smoothies so we ordered Big 5 (pineapple, mango, kiwi, strawberry & apple) and Pash N Shoot (passion fruit, pineapple, mango & orange) both were so fresh and delicious. Mum had a Detox Raw Veg one – very green. The kids menu had great choices but we ordered off the main menu. I (Katja) had tomato & hummus bruschetta with my favourite avocado and homemade hash browns on the side, its was gorgeous. I (Nuala) had the roasted vegetable lentil salad. It was huge, really yummy, I don't think I had eaten this much salad in my life. I would recommend it. To finish we had Oreo cheesecake – delish but we shared as very rich and we were very full. We will definitely come back Lois (12) and recommend it for brunch, lunch or tea! Go to Moksha and feel liberated! Katja Kettles & Nuala Campbell

ven though I'm not vegetarian I enjoyed the food very much. The restaurant was really inviting and relaxing. The staff were cool and helpful. Because there was such a large variety of food, I was confused on what to have, so our waitress helped us decide. We had the Terre à Tapas Sharing Plate, because it has a selection of everything on the menu, Bangkok Broken Balls and Smokey Scrunch Chips. The presentation was amazing and I tried everything. My favourite dishes were Korean Fried Cauliflower, Scrunch Chips, Bangkok Broken Balls and the edible flowers. For pudding I had the Lush Truffle Brownie, which I strongly recommend because it was an explosion of flavours and very chocolatey. I would definitely like to go back sometime. Charlie Cooper

ell my time at VIP (Very Italian Pizza) was amazing. I ordered a Parma Pizza which had the toppings of tomato pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese and parma ham. The pizza had my absolutely favourite cheese parmesan with as well my favourite salad rocket. When the waitress gave me my pizza it looked amazing on how much effort was put into my pizza then at that moment I tried it was SO FANTASTIC!! One flavour just turned into another and the texture I could feel in my mouth was just so amazing and for how brilliant the pizza was I suggest adult and children and any age should go to VIP (Very Important Pizza). hen people look back on Euro 2016, what will they say? Will they say “I'll never forget the cavalier, swashbuckling manner in which Portugal won it”? No. Will they say “Well didn't England do us proud”? No. Will they say “How treated we were by the plethora of stunning games and performances by some of the world's best players”? Again, probably not. This tournament was a bit like a Kaiser Chiefs song. Vaguely engaging to begin with, a ballsy if illfated crescendo in the middle but then when all's said and done, a distinctly second rate rehash of what happened in 2004. Undoubted highlights were the noble quests of Wales, Iceland and Northern Ireland, the absolute pinnacle being when Hal RobsonKanu briefly turned into Dennis Bergkamp during the quarter final against Belgium. Not much went right for me personally, not only as an England fan, but also in my burning desire for Cristiano Ronaldo to eventually discover the concept of modesty, so that I may finally love him. Two columns ago I rejoiced in how decisively Iceland had proved him wrong when he petulantly claimed they would “do nothing” in this tournament, and now there he is – engaged in a competition between his pecs and the trophy over which is shinier. In many ways, Portugal’s workmanlike, unattractive triumph was a fitting end, especially given the winning goal was scored by Eder, someone who always got picked first at school, not because he was good, but because everyone was scared stiff of him. In the nine major tournaments (Euros and World Cups) there have been since the turn of the millennium, this one probably ranks about eighth, behind Euro 2004, but definitely ahead of the footballing funeral that was the 2010 World Cup.

normally err on the side of thinking that there must be some good in people. You know what I mean, surely that person cannot be all bad. Not any more. Over the last few weeks, as the future of our country and the way it is run unfolds, I have never been more disappointed in human nature. What an extraordinary bunch of self serving, bigoted and back stabbing creatures politicians seem to be. How do they sleep at night? Okay, I am sure that there are some who still have principles based on creating a better world, but where are they and why are they not making themselves heard? Right now all we see and hear are tales of deceit and intrigue, lies and backtracking, backstabbing and front stabbing too for that matter. And who do you support? Do you have any faith in any of them or indeed any of the political parties that they supposedly belong to? I simply have no idea beyond knowing that I dislike most of them, dislike their behaviour, their lies and their arrogance. I've always been a socialist, working class background and all that, but now what is socialism and what in fact is the Labour Party? That is such a mess that it's hard to offer my allegiance. The Tories, well equally messy and lacking in appeal for me. As for the rest? No, sorry, nothing cohesive or appealing about them either. Perhaps this is the end of party politics. Maybe in the future we vote for ideas and for people that we believe will support those ideas, without being weighed down by towing a party line. Maybe it's time to look at who runs our lives and consider whether we want it run by career politicians or by serious business professionals. Imagine if parliament were run by people who knew how to make things work, perhaps by people like Lord Sugar. I reckon it wouldn't be long before he was wagging his finger at the current set of scoundrels and saying "You're fired!".

L

atest TV news is now being filmed at various outdoor locations around Brighton, Adur and Worthing. The exciting move came about because CEO, Bill Smith, wants to bring news as it happens to the people of the city, he said: “We were the only media group at the Shoreham Air Show Disaster. Latest TV is Brighton. Our fantastic team of reporters and newscasters all work extremely hard to bring you all of the local news as it happens. We realised that people don’t want to hear news being read out to them from the inside of a TV studio!”. The news is presented by Mike Mendoza and Sophie Cook, who can often be found looking windswept and interesting on the seafront. Mike said: “After almost two years of presenting the news at latest TV, I am enjoying our move to the next stage, it's all very exciting and I love working with Sophie. It's great getting out and about instead of being stuck in the studio.” Cohost Sophie added: “I feel extremely privileged to have been given this opportunity to represent my adopted hometown and to take the news out to the streets of a city that I love. It's a city filled with exciting people and wonderful locations and it's exciting to be presenting the news in some of them. Obviously shooting on location presents additional challenges compared to the studio and we may have to put together our very own outtakes show!”. Latest TV news is on every night at 6pm on Freeview Channel 7 & Virgin Media 159

> Keeping up with Lynn Ruth Miller

T

here are some people who seem to have endless amounts of energy and are constantly on the go – I have a friend like that, 82yearold Lynn Ruth Miller, comedian, author, artist and burlesque dancer! Originally from America, but now living in Brighton, Lynn started stand up at the age of 72 and after appearing on America’s Got Talent and Britain's Got Talent, her career has gone from strength to strength. She has not long returned from doing the Dublin and Melbourne Comedy festivals. I managed to catch up with her briefly before she had to dash off on another adventure.

“ I am happy, I

When did you start doing stand up? I started doing stand up in 2003 in San Fransisco at the San Fransisco Comedy College. I went to write an article as I knew nothing about stand up comedy. Then in 2005 I was performing in Edinburgh and I go there every year now for the festival.

like myself, I like my career and I like my life! ”

Where do you get your energy from for all this gigging? I am happy, I like myself, I like my career and I like my life! That's where I get my energy. That's really it. Oh and I make sure I get eight hours sleep a night. The Melbourne Comedy Festival must have been a great experience It was the best experience ever. I was there for six weeks and I loved every minute. I was on the television and radio. People would shout at me in the street and shout "We are coming to see your show". Kid Creole & The Coconuts

The Dresser

> Ronald Harwood’s classic hit

B

righton's famous and much loved Theatre Royal, by actors and audiences alike, was once the premiere preWest End venue, a role for the venue that seems to be returning as we are treated to so many amazing productions prior to them going into London. Later this year we will be treated to a new production of The Dresser, Ronald Harwood's hugely successful play. The Dresser tells the heartbreaking story of an ageing actormanager and his long suffering dresser as they struggle to keep the show on the road against the backdrop of a downatheel regional theatre in wartime. First performed in 1980 in the West End and on Broadway, the play was made into a multi awardwinning film starring Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay in 1983, and a BBC television film starring Ian McKellen and Anthony Hopkins last year. Now the first images have been released of Ken Stott and Reece Shearsmith in the new production along with the announcement of two new cast members: Selena Cadell and

Harriet Thorpe. Selina Cadell most recently starred as Miss Froy in the BBC television film The Lady Vanishes. She is well known for her role as Mrs Tishell in the television series Doc Martin. Harriet Thorpe played the character of Fleur in the BBC TV series Absolutely Fabulous, and has worked extensively with Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders on other television projects. Ken Stott has received four Best Actor Olivier Award nominations for his work at the National Theatre and in the West En. His film credits include The Hobbit, Charlie Wilson’s War and The Chronicles of Narnia, and his television credits include the critically acclaimed BBC series The Missing, for which he received a BAFTA nomination, and Rebus, the Ian Rankin crime drama in which Ken played the title role. Reece Shearsmith recently appeared in the Olivier and South Bank Awardwinning Hangmen at the Royal Court. He is perhaps best known for his starring roles in the multi awardwinning cult television series The League of Gentlemen and its spinoffs Inside No. 9 and Psychoville. Now an annual attraction on Madeira Drive, Kid Creole’s show transcended the ’80s revival scene with his bold and brassy, hot and sassy jazztinged pop classics. From the sunkissed soca flavoured opener ‘(No More) Casual Sex’, it was a playful, gently saucy show. The terrific band, featuring many long serving players, were given room to show their skills as many songs were extended into funky jams featuring Nile Rodgers style guitar mixed with sassy brass solos. August Darnell remains a great frontman and revelled in his role as he flirted with Coconuts and audience alike. A hitfilled twohour party session. Concorde 2, 8 July 2016 Steve Clements ★★★★★

F

ounded in 1996, and hailing from the barrios of Bogotá, Sidestepper are rooted in the irresistible beats of Colombia, brought to life via joyful grooves and South American melodies, with shakers, flutes, percussion, dreamy guitars, and stunning vocals. Their longawaited album, ‘Supernatural Love’, was released in February, and festivals are at the forefront of their activity here in the UK this summer including recent performances at Latitude and Larmer Tree, forthcoming shows at Port Eliot and Womad festivals, as well as gigs at venues such as Shoreham's Ropetackle Centre. Featuring a core lineup of five musicians, Sidestepper pulses with the joy that comes from music made naturally and effortlessly. Young virtuoso percussionist Juan Carlos ‘Chongo’ Puello and soulboy/vocalist Edgardo ‘Guajiro’ Garcés join the band’s powerhouse singer Erika ‘Eka’ Muñoz, guitarist Ernesto ‘Teto’ Ocampo and British DJ/producer Richard Blair – who cofounded Sidestepper, and who produces their music – variously playing, singing, producing and mixing, with melody and textural complexity. It was within the historic barrio of La Candelaria that Sidestepper crafted their latest album ‘Supernatural Love’, a work that marks a radical change in direction for this acclaimed collective. Long acknowledged as the original progenitors of electrocumbia, the cuttingedge blend of electronica and AfroColombian rhythms that has torn up dancefloors from Medellin to London and New York, the band’s sound has spawned such young groups as Chocquibtown, Bomba Estereo and more, many of whose members have played in Sidestepper over the group’s evolution. The new album befits the band’s reputation as innovators: organic, potent, rhythmic, and irresistibly danceable. Ropetackle Centre, Shoreham, Friday 29 July, 8pm, £15

> John Grant & next big thing Holly Macve perform at the brilliant De La Warr Pavilion

S

ometimes it's nice to step out of Brighton for a concert and a change of scenery, and we're spoilt for choice here with the everimproving range of events on offer in surrounding towns. Melting Vinyl's mission to bring more people to Eastbourne is laudable (how I would have loved to have seen bands like Beirut and Animal Collective in my hometown when I was a nipper!) and I've been to fantastic exhibitions and shows in Bexhill's De La Warr Pavilion too. This Saturday, DLWP host John Grant with support from Bella Union label mate Holly Macve. BRIT award winner John Grant broke through in a big way in the UK with 2013's introspective ‘Pale Green Ghosts’ album. Last year's ‘Grey Tickles, Black Pressure’ was sunnier & funkier but similarly acclaimed for its strong songwriting and sense of humour. If you haven't heard him yet, he's well worth checking out for fans of clearly discernible lyrics who like some wry confessional observations along and a funny turn of phrase. Bella Union boss Simon Raymonde discovered Holly Macve in a basement bar in Brighton last year and promptly signed her up, while Grant invited her to open for him on his UK tour after five minutes of hearing her voice. Stream her track ‘Fear’ in a Mahogany Session on YouTube to hear what it sounds like yourself: to my ears it has a Mazzy Star wooziness about it, meeting Marissa Nadler with a country twang. Take some time off work if you can, get down to Bexhill early to browse DLWP's exhibitions and then relax at this singersongwriter double bill. Y

ou may not have noticed but a couple of weeks ago Komedia’s Krater Comedy quietly added Thursday shows to its summer scheduling. What fun! This isn’t a new thing, in case you’re thinking you’ve got deja vu, but it is something that’s taken a break for some time and is back three out of every four weeks. August is traditionally a bit spartan for comedy shows, as the annual migration of comedians to the Edinburgh Festival strips

many away. Which is why it’s particularly appreciated as a summer gift. Krater is not skimping on the talent either, with well respected talents like Susan Murray, Sean Meo, Sol Bernstein, Barry Ferns and Phil Chapman all featuring on Thursday lineups, and

proceedings being hosted by awardwinning MC Stephen Grant. Of course, there’s also Krater’s shows on Fridays and Saturdays, as well as special offers on meal deals for every night, and special offers on ticket prices announced via Komedia’s email newsletter each week that are worth watching out for. The weekend just started one day earlier. Viva Thursdays! Krater Comedy, Komedia, Thursday 4 August, 7pm, £12/9/5
