t’s Jeans for Genes day on Friday 23 September, raising money for a range of initiatives that improve the quality of life of children and families affected by genetic disorders. Feel great in your perfect pair of jeans while supporting the cause with my guide. The Feel Think about how tight jeans are once washed, then how they loosen after half an hour of wear so buy them tight. Not so tight that they stop you breathing (!) but enough so they suck you in, like a corset. The Fit It’s all about balancing your proportions to look and feel your best. If you have a rounded tummy, choose a high waisted style to hold you in – a rise also great for those with shorter legs since it creates the illusion of longer legs. Curvy and top heavy ladies look great in bootleg or flares as they balance out curves. If you want the denim look but a more tailored option, choose denim culottes or trousers.

Where To Shop Topshop has an amazing selection of colours, fits and styles to choose from while Zara and Next are great at tailored styles and denim trousers. Designers at Debenhams has plenty of trend lead looks and I love River Island and Miss Selfridge for denim trends such as embellishment.

DOGGY TALES > Bella of the ball

E

ach week Latest 7 will regale you with tales about the dogs who live in Brighton (via their owners) and also introduce you to rescue dogs, looking for forever homes. This week, meet Bella, a gorgeous Jack Russell Terrier cross, who is owned by Rina Lakhani. “I met Bella when I was living in Glasgow, my mum picked her up for me. My friend had one of her brothers from a previous litter. When I first walked through the door I remember being shocked at how tiny she was! I have a photograph of her asleep when she was a few months old and she was smaller than a wine bottle! “She is very partial to squeaking her toy and wanting to play as soon as you sit down to watch TV! She's dead fast and loves to play with her toys in the garden. She also likes to snuggle, hang out with her best pals BDB and Rocky and chase seagulls. When it's a hot day she likes to be dipped into a water trough to freshen up! “She's terrified of motorbikes, in reaction to this, she tries to run after them and barks at them, putting them in their place!”

hese are not the times to be knocked down by a truck. I know there’s never really a good time to suffer multiple injuries, but recently those questions they ask to check whether someone is concussed keep coming to me. Do you know who the Prime Minister is? Who is the leader of the opposition? What day of the week is it? I’m not sure I could answer these questions with any certainty even when I haven’t been hit roundly about the head by an eightwheeled vehicle. The other day I even had to check my email to confirm I was scratching the right year on my parking permit. You can always get the right date on an email – useful tip. Unlike the annoying news apps that just tell you something momentous happened ‘2 hours ago’ rather than confirming the date. Yes, I get scatty. I find myself doing too many things at once and in my eagerness to fix the broken wifi while sending an invoice I forget to send my sister a birthday card (it’s alright, I’ve got her a present she loves). But when no one is sure of the answers to the big questions, maybe we all need a knock on the head. LATEST 7 | 5

COWARD AT HIS

COMEDIC BEST

> Samuel West and Phyllis Logan lead the cast in one of Noël Coward’s funniest comedies, Present Laughter, at Theatre Royal Brighton

S

amuel West is well known to TV audiences for his role in ITV’s hit drama series, Mr Selfridge, in which he played Frank Edwards in all four series. Phyllis Logan’s numerous TV credits include all six series of ITV’s multi award winning drama Downton Abbey, in which she played the housekeeper Mrs Hughes, voted by the Radio Times as their favourite character of the entire series. In Present Laughter, the charming diva Garry Essendine (Samuel West) is determined to disregard his advancing years by revelling in endless tantrums and casual affairs. He may be teetering reluctantly towards middle age but everyone is infatuated by Garry, and his antics and rampant flirtations require the most careful handling by those closest to him. About to depart for Africa, he finds himself besieged by a bevy of would be seductresses, not to mention his acerbic secretary (Phyllis Logan), his estranged wife, and an obsessed young playwright. As he attempts to disentangle himself from their clutches and demands, the sparkling comedy escalates. Noël Coward’s semi

autobiographical comedy, set in the glamorous world of theatre, is a gloriously witty portrait of the life that whirled around Coward in his heyday and is widely considered to be one of his best loved works. Filled with the brilliant lines of a master craftsman, this new production blends razor sharp wit, dazzlingly funny dialogue, captivating characters and fabulous sets and costumes. Noël Coward wrote Present Laughter as he approached his 40th birthday. Written in 1939 and first performed in 1942, the original run featured Noël Coward in the lead role. Over the past seventy years, the play has been performed worldwide, enjoying numerous revivals in Europe and North America, including a US tour in 1958 with Coward reprising his role. In subsequent productions, some of the many actors to play Garry have included Albert Finney, Peter O’Toole and Ian McKellen. Playwright, composer, actor, author, director, producer and master of wit, Noël Coward (1899 – 1973) remains one of our most distinguished and celebrated icons. The perfect theatrical treat for a summer evening, don’t miss Present Laughter when it visits Theatre Royal Brighton next month.

need your help. His birthday is coming up and I have no idea what to get him. Peyton’s not my boyfriend, so I’m not sure I need to even get him anything, but I think it would be more weird if I didn’t. So, I can’t really give him aftershave since that’s expensive and would look like I cared about how he smells, like a girlfriend would. I can’t get him clothes because I don’t really know what he likes and besides, I'm more interested in him without his clothes on... How do I get him something to show that I care a little bit, but not enough to get together? I mean he’s my best friend but not my boyfriend. I could go out and do something with him for his birthday, like pay for his entry for a club and some drinks? Or I could see if there are any Groupons, I guess? How would I explain to people when I book something that he’s not my boyfriend though? Would it be weird to go on a Segway ride with someone who’s riding me? The last boyfriend I had I went all out with. I baked him a cake, cooked dinner and got him some of his favourite books. It was easy – there was no limit really and I could just splash out. I could show how much I cared about him without him reading into it since we were actually together. But with Peyton there’s a fine line. If I get him one thing he will expect something else. If I don’t get something perfect this perfect balance between best friend and lover will be broken. I can’t figure it out. Maybe I’ll just get him some beer – you can’t go wrong with beer, right?

odern travel, how we love it, how we love to complain about it. The weather, we love to complain about that too. Put the two together and we go into meltdown. For the last few months rail services to London have been less than efficient, it’s been a downright disgrace and I say this as an infrequent user. Were I still a commuter, heaven forbid, I would have given up. I know that it is an urban myth that Mussolini made Italian trains run on time, but surely it is time for someone to bring in the "big guns". Then we had a mini heatwave. Moan, moan, moan we all went when it poured with rain and then moan again when it tipped into the thirties and we started to boil alive. I had so much sympathy for my commuting friends but less for the moaning Minnies who are afraid of a bit of sun. Put on a hat I say and slip slap slop the factor 50 on your pale and tender parts. Then I suffered the effects of the two together, a train journey in soaring heat. Now that really is a bitch. I booked my tickets well in advance to get not only the best benefit from my Senior Railcard but also to have booked and numbered seats both ways. I'm not standing for nearly five hours for anyone these days and certainly not in an un airconditioned carriage in a heatwave. The outward journey was fine, not too hot and my booked seats were properly marked. The return was a very different and sad story. Dragging my luggage into the designated carriage was hard enough but then to discover that the booking vouchers had not been posted on the numbered seats was a nightmare. Of course there was someone already in my allotted seat and was there a train official there to sort things out? Guards! Guards? Was there bunkum! I did find a seat in the end, and spent a very hot and cramped journey wondering where the train guard was and what they were actually doing. In hiding perhaps?

> Down with the kids

I

'm back, yes the kids have done their stuff, and a very good job they did too. But do I agree with their verdicts? Well I have to say that I do. Charlie went to Terre á Terre and that happens to be one of my favourite places to eat, not only in Brighton but pretty much anywhere. The constantly developing style of their kitchen is a testament to the culinary genius of owners Amanda and Phil and the team out front are quite brilliant too. Curry Leaf Cafe has rapidly become a go to choice for me and my friends and Chef Kanthi brings to the table an authentic taste of India with a few of his own clever twists and all for very sensible prices. Lani tucked in and loved her meal, hardly surprising. Over at Boho Gelato Harry had a real treat, eating great gelato that worked well with his dairy intolerance, a great place if you have the same issue. For me I can eat the lot and find it hard to pass without buying a cone. Kate went to Bardsley's and despite not being a great fish lover had a good time. Well of course she did, Bardsley's is like a second home to me, 30 years a customer I consider Roy, Muriel and Neil to be family. Izzy went off to Breeze Brasserie and fell in love with the tasty and generous food that Bruce and his team serve up. I was there recently too and you will find my glowing review on our website. It's relaxed, stylish and fun, and the portions are great, ideal for a growing boy like me. Lily went to Chaula's and loved the spicy dishes that she

tried. I love the way youngsters encounter and embrace spicy food in a way that I could not have done at their age, lucky them! And I have been a fan of Chaula and her spicy food for many years now. I love the Chilli Pickle Cafe too, how lucky are we to have so many great Indian eateries in the city. Johnny went along and loved his meal, I happen to know that he is a big fan of their takeaway service, The Chilli Pickle Canteen too. When it comes to family dining few do it as well as Sue Addis and her team at Donatello, and Marlon agrees with me here having thoroughly enjoyed his time there. For years this Brighton favourite has been serving good and well priced food to locals and visitors alike. Charlie went to Fish + Liquor for a classic fish supper and enjoyed both the food and the seafront's views and atmosphere. I have been along too and found great fish in supercripsy batter and my secret vice curry sauce – yum! Stanley went to La Choza and loved it. It was La Choza that changed me into a Mexican food lover – need I say more? Katja and Nuala went to Moksha and as well as enjoying the food seem to have flirted with their waiter. I go there because the home made cakes are superb. Finally Monty went to V.I.P. And gave it 100/10. I agree, a favourite haunt of mine too. You can read all of their reviews online at thelatest.co.uk and also look back over my recent reviews. Enjoy!

I

’m Johnny Doom, who some of you out there may know as Kerrang! Radio presenter & producer of 12 years and also presenter of the TV show Amp’d, a half hour weekly rock, punk and metal magazine show which started its life a year ago on Midlands local channel Big Centre TV. I am also very excited to announce that Amp’d will also be coming to Latest TV on July 27th! So what can you expect? Well, some of the freshest videos from many of the biggest rock artists such as Slipknot, Good Charlotte, All Time Low, Bring Me The Horizon, Black Stone Cherry etc. The latest gossip and rock / metal news. Information about gigs and festivals in your area. Also, in the second half of the show I interview established artists but also regularly feature new, unsigned and upcoming bands. It’s often heavy, but if you love your music loud and have a passion for guitars, then switch it on and crank it up to 11. You can also check out past episodes at www.bigcentre.tv/ampd or look us up on YouTube. Also, if bands wish to appear on forthcoming episodes of the show, they can email me at Johnny.doom@kerrangradio.co.uk. All they require to feature on Amp’d is the ability to get to our studios in Walsall on a Monday and to have a promo video to show at the end. Hope you enjoy it!

I

f you had been in the Seven Dials area last Monday, you might have been surprised by some very odd sights. There were groups of people dressed in animal costumes. Also, there was a clown, Robin Hood and many other strange characters walking about. You may think 'Hey, it's just an average day in Brighton!' But what was actually going on was TV's funny man Dom Joly, filming Brighton band Rizzle Kicks’ latest music video. I was one of the costume characters! The things I do! It was an extremely hot day and I think I lost several pounds running about dressed as a Teddy Bear. But how much fun it was and a great team of people to work with. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished result! Another thing that I'm looking forward to this week is Funny Fursdays, on the 28th of July. It's Hotel Pelirocco's long running stand up comedy night, and is a fantastic night of fun. Six comedians from London and the South Coast perform, there are prizes for the audience to be won and not only that, it's free entry! It is advisable to book seats in advance though as this is a very popular night and seating is limited. This can be done by contacting Hotel Pelirocco, doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm. Oh and did I happen to mention I'm hosting the evening too? Hopefully I'll see you there! National Youth Ballet

> Dancing into The Hawth

F

or its 2016 Season, the National Youth Ballet of Great Britain will present a special programme of performances celebrating its inspirational Founder and Artistic Director Jill Tookey, who passed away in March this year. Over three decades, Jill Tookey quietly became one of the industry’s most influential dance leaders, inspiring generations of young dancers and choreographers, many of whom have embarked upon successful professional careers after their time with NYB. The 2016 programme of performances will showcase highlights from National Youth Ballet’s 29year history through some of Jill’s favourite commissions. These include The Old Man of Lochnagar, a ballet based on the children’s book by HRH The Prince of Wales, choreographed by Olivier Award winner and NYB alumnus Drew McOnie. NYB’s innovative Beyond Ballet platform will also return, showcasing young choreographic talents presenting their own works. The Memorial Gala performance at Sadler’s Wells will also include new commissions and performances from returning alumni including choreographer Andrew McNicol, West End performer Lucinda Lawrence and Birmingham

“ Jill Tookey was

Royal Ballet first artist Ruth Brill. The 2016 Season is led by Artistic Director in Residence Mikah Smillie, a graduate of the Royal Ballet School’s Teachers Training Course, Associate Artist for Re:Bourne, mentor for NYB’s Beyond Ballet choreographic platform, teacher at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and freelance rehearsal director. Mikah Smillie said today: “Jill Tookey was an extraordinary tour de force and the mastermind behind a pioneering company of young talented dancers. The dedication, cross department collaborations and innovation created memorable performances and resulted in young artists being exposed to high level production values and professionalism from very early on. Jill’s humour, tenacity and bravery to aim for the unachievable has left a significant mark and it is my honour and pleasure to help guide this Season in the celebration of NYB's wonderful achievements and to help open the doors into a bright new future.” Friday 26 – Saturday 27 August 2016 Hawth Theatre, Hawth Avenue, Crawley, RH10 6YZ, Performances: 2.30pm and 7.30pm Tickets: £20.00, Children £14.00, Groups: 1 free for every 10 www.parkwoodtheatres.co.uk/theatre 01293 553636

The Beatles wrote the soundtrack from my childhood through to my teens. Let It Be is a celebration of that music, that weird modern form which treads a fine line between theatre and concert. Thankfully this was more concert and we were spared the interference of “gogo” dancers, and given a visual and aural representation of the fab four as they developed across those years when they ruled the world of entertainment. Of course the whole was only going to work if the company were able to emulate that sound accurately. Thank heaven then that they did, and did it well. The choice of songs was great, the costumes good and the vintage newsreels and interview soundtracks used sparingly enough to not slow the evening down. A thoroughly enjoyable evening. ack to being pissed off," is how bassist Tom Fleming put it, in describing ‘Boy King’, the fifth album from Cumbriato London altelectroindie band Wild Beasts. "What I think he means by that," says Chris Talbot, drummer with the band, "is this is album number five and although we're not getting on a bit just yet, we're thirty years old and I suppose it's the next bench mark after you've turned 18 and 21. It feels like the end of your youth. But I think if you want to still be creative and making music and art you have to have fire in your belly. I think that's what he means by being pissed off." And they've got their guitars back out for this one, in creating a bigger, more snarling and funked up sound. "I think ‘Boy King’ is an apocalyptic record," says singer and lyricist Hayden Thorpe. “It's about swimming in the abyss. When you think about sex, you've got to think about death, they're one and the same.” Along with guitarist Ben Little, Wild Beasts are all childhood (even primary school) friends from Kendal in Cumbria, before all heading to Leeds whereby Wild Beasts took off. Their chemistry, both on and off the stage is a huge factor. And five albums in they are one of the big success stories of UK indie these last few years. C

hamber music can be a great way to get to the heart of a composer in a starker, more intimate setting than a full symphony. Melodies can be easier to wrap one's head around since they are often singularly played and sound high in the mix compared to the full blaze of an orchestra. If you listen before attending a concert you can really get lost in the music, and the next instalment in BPO's Brighton Connections series features some stunning pieces to get stuck into. Dvořák is always reliable for some bold tunes and his gorgeously enveloping American String Quartet no. 12 is no different. The work is generally quite buoyant and ends with a lively final movement that is a great energetic way to end the piece. Finzi's Interlude for Oboe & String Quartet is a beautiful piece that recalls the “English pastoralist” style of composers such as Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The single movement showcases a plaintive, evocative oboe voice that achieves a wide range of moods in the space of about ten minutes: an impressive emotive feat. The Brighton Connections series always features a local composer's work and this concert will feature Meditation on Gibbons' 20th Fantasia for string quartet by Guy Richardson (Chair of the brilliant New Music Brighton association). You can hear a sample of the piece on guyrichardsoncomposer.co.uk and the rich droning harmonies sound inviting: I will certainly be attending and look forward to hearing how the scope and power of the full piece unfolds. Brighton Connections, Sun 31 July, 5pm, Brighton Unitarian Church, £15, www.brightonticketshop.com or 01273 709709

Each piece is beautifully hand painted, and she takes much of her inspiration from her life here in Brighton and the natural world around her, with the sea playing a major role.
