DOGGY TALES > My faithful friend Arya
E
very week Latest 7 will regale you with tales about the dogs who reside in Brighton (via their owners) and also introduce you to rescue dogs, who are hoping to find forever homes. This week, meet Arya, a German Shepard, who truly lives up to her name. Owner, Lisa Ellis, reveals more... “The name Arya, means ‘faithful friend’ in Persian. You would never believe that three months ago she was 24 hours away from being destroyed in Ireland, after being found tied up looking like a bag of bones in a field. We got her from Allsorts Rescue. “I have always wanted a rescue dog and after being diagnosed with PTSD and not having the confidence to leave the house, my husband got her for me! She now never leaves my side. She always sleeps with her teddy bear and will lick it clean after she has washed herself. She will often carry it around with her too. If she was a celebrity, my husband and I think Arya reminds us of Holly Willoughby. She is always smiling, likes to have fun and is a little mischievous, but everyone loves her as she is a big friendly giant.”

his week I have mostly been considering ‘home’. It started because I woke up on Saturday and blitzed my flat. I’m not very good at housework. I find it difficult to separate the different tasks and so it turns into one great big snowball of jobs to do that is just insurmountable... and so I bake a cake instead. This time, however, I woke up with the intention to vacuum the flat – what with the weather warming up and so threatening clothes moth season – and to change the bed linen. The second is thankfully not as infrequent a job as the first. Those were the only jobs I had in mind, but my momentum soon built so that I was flipping the mattress, hammering in picture hooks and hanging handmade gifts, as well as putting into order long left shelves and tabletops. I got carried away. It became a game. Which is the best way I find to get anything done. There was no cake, but there was a fully clear and clean table with which to share dinner with my friend a couple of days later. So very grown up. Which we all know is the biggest game. LATEST 7 | 5

I
ave you ever seen the episode of ‘Black Books’, Graham Linehan's stunning sitcomshaped ode to the greasy haired misanthrope, where the temperature, reaching above 88 degrees Fahrenheit, makes Bill Bailey's character Manny go insane? Well I have, and for the purposes of grasping at any possible explanation for recent events that I can, I think it's happened to us too. It could all be a bit post ergo propter hoc, but you have to accept that a) it’s been really hot recently and b) everyone's gone mad. Whether these two are mutually exclusive or not remains to be proven, but I think they aren't. One particular recent event among all others has stood out to me. There have been water fights in the capital that on two separate occasions have spilled over into violence. W the actual F? It's not just extreme cases like this though. I saw last week that a school in Brighton had not let boys wear shorts on a day when temperatures reached 32 degrees, so four 14yearold boys wore skirts in protest. First of all, well played lads, that's excellent, but secondly, how on earth have adults so spectacularly lost their judgement that it's left to the least sensible section of society in its entirety to come up with a solution? The heat, that's how. We've become less mature and rational than a 14YEAROLD BOY. Think about that. I'm personally having a great time. My Cornetto consumption has increased tenfold, which is no bad thing, but I would still happily trade for everyone just calming the hell down. Or screw it. Maybe we just embrace it. Turn the clock back several millennia and just live like the filthy, angry cavemen we are. We are the Manny. Either way, we must decide which course we are next to take as a civilisation, but how to make the choice? Referendum anyone?

n the run up to the illfated referendum I was lucky enough to make a trip across the channel. It did have the feel of potentially a "Last visit as a European". I was determined not to let it spoil my trip but there was an air of impending doom before I packed the bag and set off for St Pancras International. Eurostar has made such a difference to continental travel and traveling Business Premier made it even better. The journey was better than comfortable and the on board breakfast excellent. Before long I arrived at the city of Mechelen. Never heard of it? Nor had I, something of an sign of our attitude to Belgium. Mechelen is a fine city, small and very manageable on foot. I checked into the Hotel Martin’s Petershof and very striking it is as it sits inside a church. The effect is stunning, a bar and restaurant in the main body of the building with rooms above. Mine was large and boasted a vaulted ceiling, gothic stained glass window and a bed the size of a tennis court. After lunch, great tapas, I departed for an extraordinary convent school. And wealthy they needed to be too as the place is an opulent palace boasting the most beautiful art nouveau winter garden with a fabulous barrel vaulted stained glass roof. Not of course for the use of the girls, but for their visiting parents. It was only one of a suite of rooms created for that express purpose and it was fascinating to listen and hear how modern and commercially sassy those nuns were. After a short nap it was time to tackle the evening's activity and to the main square where amazingly I climbed the bell tower of the cathedral and looked down onto the beautiful city centre, beer in hand! After that it was a fine dinner with matched beers at The Wool Sack restaurant…

STORY OF A SIMPLE SOUL > Producer and cocreator Cameron Mackintosh talks about his long journey to bring Chichester Festival Theatre’s new version of Half A Sixpence to the stage
How did this new production come about? Nine years ago, when I first suggested to the Festival Theatre’s Artistic Director Jonathan Church that we should take a new look at Half A Sixpence with its strong local H.G. Wells connection to Chichester, I felt it would only work as long as we could get writer Julian Fellowes interested in redramatising the novel and composers George Stiles and Anthony Drewe to write a new score, incorporating and adapting the best material from David Heneker’s original. In 2008 we were all still enjoying the great worldwide success of Mary Poppins, which I coproduced with Disney. At the time, Julian was beavering away on an idea for television, which turned out to be Downton Abbey. Nevertheless, he found
time to read Wells’ semiautobiographical novel, Kipps and immediately said that it appealed to him. In a few succinct sentences he summed up the timeless quality of the story and why it still has a 21st century resonance. Unfortunately we then found out the rights weren’t available so had to wait till the summer of 2015 to start writing the show. How did you come to know the work of composers George Stiles and Anthony Drewe? David Heneker, Don Black, Tim Rice and I were on the judging panel at the inaugural Vivian Ellis Awards in 1985 which Vivian helped establish to find a new generation of writers of musicals. We all chose George and Anthony’s Just So musical adaptation of the Kipling stories as the winner. Our meeting started a long friendship and collaboration with ‘The Boys’. How did you go about reworking the score, given that David Heneker, who composed the original songs, is no longer alive? George and Anthony have always enjoyed David Heneker’s song writing style as they did the Sherman brothers who wrote the film score of Mary Poppins. I knew from the way they worked that they were the only writers I could count on to do this radical but respectful work. For all of us, the last 12 months have been a joy of creation, the result of which I think the delightful David Heneker would have loved. He has inspired us all to add our own ‘Flash Bang Wallop’ to Wells’ delightful story of a simple soul – Kipps.

> The former XFactor contestant speaks to Samantha Harman about Pride and feeling fabulous! This time last year you were unknown in the UK, how does it feel to be a household name following your XFactor success? It’s definitely surreal to say the least – I almost feel like one of the Kardashian sisters when I get stopped on the street and someone wants a picture. I'm almost like their long lost Asian Kardashian sister! The reception has been great, many have reached out, thanking me for being so confident and comfortable in my own skin and telling me that they have had the courage and confidence to express themselves without fear, because of what I've done, which is amazing! I’m so happy that I have inspired people. What was it like for you growing up in Australia as a gay man? It was very hard growing up and coming to terms with my sexuality, but like everyone gay, straight, bi, blue or green, it's all about embracing your true authentic self and being comfortable enough to say “this is me, either take it or leave it”. That’s what true confidence is. I always rebelled against what the society's norms were and always felt like an outsider. It was through the acceptance of my family, friends and my tribe and honestly loving myself, that gave me the strength to say this is me, it’s okay to be gay and it’s okay to cross dress. Don't live in fear, I don't.
In terms of your amazing sense of style, who or what inspires you? It’s all about attitude and to me clothes are a fabulous way to express yourself, just like music. Fashion has no gender and I wish that was embedded in me at an early age. When I starting experimenting with heels and pencil skirts it felt right. When my friends introduced me to Bowie and Grace Jones, I was like “wow I'm not alone!”. The world inspires me, fearless people inspire me. It’s all around you, you just need to stop looking down at your smartphone and look up, it’s beautiful. Also it's all about how clothes make you feel, I mean, I love a high platform stripper boot, gold hoops and a dark maroon lippy, it's almost a daily staple for me. It makes me feel glamourous and fabulous and it's good to carry that energy around with you all day. When did you first realise that you could sing? Did anyone encourage your talent? I'm half Filipino, so growing up my mama used to have the karaoke machine out, so I would hear her belt out all of the classics. I used to watch her in awe singing 'Wind Beneath My Wings'. It was then when I plucked up enough courage to sing 'Hero' by Mariah Carey. When it was over, I was like damn you can sing baby! I must inform you that Latest 7 want to claim you as an

honorary Brightonian! What do you think of our fair city? Thank you! Only heard great things about Brighton and heard it’s super gay friendly aswell, but most importantly you have such a community, everyone gets involved. I did come earlier this year for two days during the XFactor Live Tour. I walked along the pier and went to the best fish and chip shop. It would be a great getaway especially during the summer, I crave that sun and beach! So, you’re headlining Brighton Pride this year? Hell yes! I'm set to perform and host for you guys! I can't wait! It will be amazing
because some of my Aussie mates are coming all the way from down under to join in. I’ve got my sequin speedos, stilettos and mermaid tail all packed and ready! What advice would you give someone who is struggling with their sexuality or may just feel different? Come to Brighton Pride and experience the love and community and celebration, see that it’s okay to gay. I see being different as being extra unique! Own it because it'll only inspire others.

> Party time in what is fast becoming the food capital of the UK
I
’m not in habit of reviewing parties here, despite being invited to so many. My view has always been that there is little value to you the reader in hearing about what a good time I have had at an event that you were not invited to. Would I not simply be gloating about my own life? But once in a while I think it only fair that I report on a string of events that reflect the buoyant nature of Brighton & Hove’s food and drink scene – so here goes. It’s been a busy fortnight with two launches and one relaunch to attend. First was the launch of Jetty, the new restaurant and bar in what will be the new Harbour hotel on Brighton seafront. And what a party, a lavish affair highlighting a menu that will really focus on fresh fish and seafood. The space has been gutted, gone are the tacky opera house style decorations and in their place a cool, modern interior with an open kitchen, smart bar, dining areas and comfortable lounge areas too. The Champagne flowed and the oysters were being shucked thick and fast at an event that heralded exciting things to come. Executive chef Alex Aitken spoke with me and I cannot wait to go back and dine in style. Next was the relaunch of The Bistor and Hotel du Vin. I was there when it opened 15 years ago at party that set the bar very high indeed. Now, after a very smart refurbishment, the bistro has a much brighter and lighter look and a fresh new menu to match. And what an event, the good, the bad and the, dare I say it, ugly gathered to celebrate in style this new era for one of the city’s most popular drinking and dining venues. Lavish buffets of seafood, charcuterie and the biggest display of perfectly roasted
meats I have ever seen were matched by brilliant Brewdog beers, free flowing awardwinning Ridgeview sparkling wines and award winning Blackdown Spirit cocktails – with ice creams, wine tastings and live music this was an event to be seen at. I cannot wait to get in there and sample their new offering. Finally a new venue for Las Iguanas at Brighton Marina. And what a night of indulgence, excellent cocktails, tasty foods and plenty of fun, but above that they are proving that at every level of the market Brighton and Hove can deliver. This South American eatery is well priced and extremely family friendly with a kids meal deal that I reckon is pretty unbeatable, check that out for sure. I’ve eaten at Las Iguanas a few times now and have never been disappointed. Much as I love our independent restaurant scene, I also like to have, up my sleeve, a few reliable national brands that I can visit when I travel in the knowledge that I will eat and be looked after well. Las Iguanas fits the bill and their new venue at Brighton Marina is certainly worth a visit. So here you have it, sorry to show off about my busy social calendar, but it had to be done. Brighton and Hove boasts so many great places to eat now that we are certainly punching way above our weight when it comes to food and drink and long may it stay that way. Charmaine & Steve Furst
> The reunion
I
f you have been reading my column over the last few months, you will know that I have interviewed television’s Dave Benson Phillips, comedian Dave Thompson and entertainer Jason Maverick. This weekend we all happened to be working together on the same bill at Laughterstock, in St Pauls Arts Centre in Worthing. Also on the bill were two more of my good friends, comedy musician James McDonnell and actor and comedian Steve Furst. James McDonnell has played far and wide across the UK with his unique musical comedy style. I always love working with James as he is so high energy. As well as being a finalist in the South Coast Comedian of the year, James has played the Komedia, Up the Creek, Angel Comedy, Download Festival and numerous other shows (including in the men’s toilet in a pub to 15 paying audience!). James is also local to Brighton. Steve Furst was the headliner of the night playing his alter ego Lenny Beige. Steve is a regular guest on the Wright Stuff, on channel 5, and was a regular character on the TV show Little Britain. He has also appeared in the West End in musicals Matilda and Made in Dagenham and he appeared in more than 30 commercials for Orange. I first met Steve Furst many years ago when we were doing a show at the Leicester Square Theatre in London and we've worked together many times since doing Laughing Stock, it was like one big reunion rather than working. What can be better than working with some of your oldest friends and having a laugh? I do hope we can do it again soon!

REVIEW > Ned’s Atomic Dustbin This show was billed as ‘B Sides The Seaside (plus live faves)’ but to the crowd each song was a classic. From the first to the last almost every intro was given a mass knowing nod, the opening
line was mouthed to the nearest sweatdrenched acolyte and then it was back into the wellbehaved mosh pit. A rare experience where performers and audience seemed to share the joyfulness of wellloved and welldelivered songs. John Penney’s vocals and Rat’s guitar stood strong against the twin bassists and the 1990sfuelled bill began with an exuberant Collapsed Lung who scored big with ‘Eat My Goal’. > Ryley Walker
A
n integral part of the alternative Chicago music scene, Ryley Walker has been making some serious waves with his gorgeous and elegant progressive and experimental folk acoustica that contains hints of jazz, as well as many players from around the Chicago area, a place that has been wholly inspirational for him: "Chicago is in every fibre of my being. It's a lovely place, full of creativity," says Walker. "It shapes everything in my world. Down to what I'm eating for dinner..." Prolific, he's already released two studio albums and one live album since his 2014 debut ‘All Kinds of You’. And now he is about to unleash another record, the simply outstanding ‘Golden Sings That Have Been Sung’. "These songs were mostly written while touring last year," says Walker. "Lots of experimenting with them live and working the kinks out. Others were fully crafted in the studio last winter. A much better version of myself all over this record. It's mostly the same band from ‘Primrose Green’ [his previous studio album], plus Quin Kirchner, Ryan Jewell, LeRoy Bach.” Already a fixture here in the UK, he played the Great Escape in May, and is back for further gigs here in August. While ‘Primrose Green’ was the album that really caught the attention of the media and music lovers alike, ‘Golden Sings That Have Been Sung’ is set to catapult him further into the collective consciousness, thanks to its languid grooves, pleasing melodies, brilliant playing and warming glow. What does the title mean? "It think its a funny way to say 'good times'." St. Mary's Castle, Hastings, Friday 5 August, 7.30pm & The Haunt, Brighton, Sun 13 Nov, 7pm, £12.50

> Figaro at Glyndebourne Festival: taut, funny and dazzlingly entertaining
I
was lucky enough to get an Under 30s ticket for Le nozze di Figaro recently and it was some of the best fun I've ever had at any sort of show, be it comedy, theatre or opera. My guest, who tends to be more interested in the choreography and acting in opera than the music, was similarly enthralled, although Mozart's spritely, stirring work undoubtedly completed the dazzlingly entertaining whole. This revival of Michael Grandage's 2012 Festival production has a novel approach of updating the scenario to the 1960s, and the spirit of free love reflects the sassy tone of the libretto. Rather than coming across as gimmicky, the '60s setting proved inspired, injecting fresh life and vigour into the opera. Flares, miniskirts and striking haircuts were in abundance, and pop music dancing lent to the sense of mischief and adventure. Beautifully, lustfully sung by the whole cast, the quality of acting and comic timing was distinctly memorable. Gyula Orendt's Count was a funny, ineffectual and bemused villain, while Rosa Feola made for an energetic and commanding Susanna whose mature, rounded voice soared. The highlight for me however was undoubtedly Natalia Kawalek's Cherubino who owned every scene she pranced into. Performing a trouser role, her balletic, graceless female dancing was farcically hilarious whereas her swagger and nuanced portrayal of innocence was charming and entrancing. At the time of writing there are still some tickets left: I'm going again this week and can't wait to see what the next guest makes of this perfect opera. K
en Dodd is an entertainment legend. With over 60 years ‘in the biz’ picking up awards as plentifully as if they were daisies in a field, and a reputation for never being ‘off’, Mr Dodd simply overflows with gags, hard won silliness, professionalism, all the while incorporating a vocabulary all of his own yet immediately recognisable and understandable. It’s hardly surprising that one of his two gigs in our locale this weekend has already sold out.
The shows are listed as starting earlier than most, possibly because of Dodd’s reputation for overrunning for as long as he feels like, meaning in the past trains have been missed and babysitters raked in the

alk past New Steine Gardens, and it’s impossible not to be moved by the cast bronze AIDS Memorial Sculpture by Romany Mark Bruce. Standing 4m high, it depicts two intertwined figures – one male and one androgynous – that soar up towards the sky casting a shadow in the shape of the red ribbon that is the international symbol for HIV/AIDS awareness. We love Romany’s irrepressible talent – and the way his sculptural approach translates onto canvas through bold,
vibrant palette strokes: challenging, charged and merging effortlessly between figurative, abstract expressionism and the space between. That’s why we’ll be heading up to the New Steine Hotel for Romany’s new exhibition of abstract paintings ‘State of Mind’. Here’s a sneak preview of
