very week Latest 7 will regale you with tales about the dogs who live in Brighton (via their owners) and also introduce you to rescue dogs, who are hoping to find forever homes. This week, meet Ella, a very chilled out three year old Labrador, who belongs to Sophie Tanner... “I took Ella on when she was six months old, from a friend who was going through a tough time. It was pretty sudden, but the best decision I have ever made! “She doesn’t like hats – helmets, caps, straw hats, police hats, you name it, she’ll bark. Also, for some unknown reason, when we’re going up stairs, she’ll sit on the top step and wait for me, then lift her front paws so she’s in a Buddha pose and looks like she’s meditating. “If she was a famous person, she’d most definitely be Ghandi! She’s the office dog at Propellernet and has a bunch of devoted sitters – she has a better social life than I do!”

hen I was a kid I lived in a ground floor flat in an old Victorian building. Consequently, my bedroom had 12 foot high ceilings. It was actually a walkthrough room, in that you had to walk through it in order to get to my mother’s bedroom. Luckily for me a corridor was installed, but only up to about 9 feet, meaning that I slept on a platform and could walk on the ceiling when I lay on my back – much to my mother’s annoyance. Footprints, natch. I think it’s because of having this unorthodox – but highly enjoyable – room growing up that has left me wanting to challenge my environment just as fundamentally, now I’m a bit older. I have the creativity – and practicality – of a five yearold mapping out their dream treehouse. I had it then when I kind of believed I might be able to convince my mother to install monkey bars on my walls (I couldn’t). And I have it now as I imagine a roof terrace topping a spiral staircase taking over the current footprint of my washing machine. It’s highly unlikely. But I can dream. And maybe get monkey bars to a window box. LATEST 7 | 5

few columns ago, I wrote about the importance of art and performance, especially when the chips are down. Well, having just finished a run of three comedy sketch shows, with two of my best friends at the Camden Fringe, that's never felt more true to me than it does now. When I get the chance, I can be a real trundler. A school report I once had said "Jake has an approach to work that would make a sloth envious." I really can drift and procrastinate with the best of them. Is there a guitar in the room? Then you'll be getting nothing out of me. Is there test cricket on telly? Forget it. Were it not for two good mates I'd known since I was eight, I'd never have had the gumption to do anything as risky and ambitious as to ask 120 people if I'm funny or not and expect an instant response. Over a terrifyingly short space of time, they prodded and coaxed out all my effort and creativity in a way only someone who had known me for 15 years could. Thank everything that they did, not necessarily because it produced a show that made everyone who watched it laugh (it totally did though, how cool is that?), but because the days building up to it were some of the happiest of my life so far. They were stressful, long and tough, but relentlessly hilarious as each last minute idea to make each sketch just that little bit better formed from thin air. Processes like these are always such a knifeedge dynamic. They've always known how to push my buttons – our friendship consists almost exclusively of teasing and provocation – but it's only ever been borne out of the possibility that something funny might happen, and this time it did. If it sounds like I’m showing off, I am, and when you do your thing, you should too.

am aware daily that I am becoming curmudgeonly. There's a word to conjure with, whilst not being onomatopoeic, it certainly has a grouchy tone to it. Funnily enough my grouchiness is often sparked by words. Words that I sense have been thrown into disrepute. Let me start with "Gourmet". Yes the word that peppers my life if you forgive the culinary allusion. It's not that I don't believe in gourmet, I just find it too often applied to things that hardly deserve the accolade. I feel it inappropriate to apply it to grilled minced beef patties, are you with me? On to "Vintage" and the use of the word for anything that we might formerly have declared to be second hand. Then "Heritage", everything is heritage these days but surely not tomatoes. Heritage instills a sense of essential history and whilst I see the importance of preserving delicious fruits and vegetables I'm worried that it adds an overblown sense of importance. "Designer", well what a worthless label that has become, everything is designer, it always was, the difference lying in whether it is good or bad design. I am equally unloving of the word "Studio" and especially when it is used to describe something once described as a bedsit. In the same breath I have issues with the word "Boutique". I suppose in the ‘60s every clothes shop wanted to be seen as the fashionable place and the word was adopted from the French to add a certain chic glamour. Now no self respecting fashion outlet would use it and it has been handed down to the world of hotels. It sort of made sense, a new wave of hotels that were making an effort to rise above the old boarding house or B&B. It gave rise to a lot of beige walls and faux suede headboards, to chandeliers and shabby chic (another phrase for second hand) and in turn it raised prices. I love progress, I applaud the inclusion of new words into the language, but let's not kid ourselves, some of this is just marketing hype.

EMERALD LIFE PICKS THE CITY BY THE SEA TO LAUNCH GROUNDBREAKING TRAVEL INSURANCE > The UK’s first dedicated insurance provider for the LGBT community, Emerald Life, visits Brighton to talk about trust in insurance companies and the financial hopes and fears of LGBT people
B
righton’s LGBT community is officially the most suspicious in the UK towards insurance, according to Emerald Life – the UK’s first fullservice insurance provider for the LGBT community. A YouGov survey, commissioned by the specialist insurance provider found that over a quarter (29%) of LGBT people in Brighton and Hove do not trust insurance companies, more than twice that of other major cities that are home to a significant LGBT population, such as London or Manchester. Emerald’s cofounders announced the findings whilst visiting the city to launch their exciting new travel insurance.
“ Our insurance is designed to give you peace of mind at a fraction of the cost of something that could go wrong ”
“For a long time, the LGBT community has felt that the insurance sector does not treat LGBT customers fairly, or has not considered the particulars of our life enough to offer proper cover for LGBT customers. Brighton leads the country in the percentage of LGBT residents who distrust insurance companies, and so we have come to talk to them first and find out why that is.” said Steve Wardlaw, chairman, Emerald life. The Emerald team will next visit Manchester during its Pride week, where they have an audience with Cllr Carl Austin Behan – the UK’s first openly gay mayor – before heading on to Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast. Both McCormack and Wardlaw hope to continue the positive engagement they’ve so far had with LGBT community members, the basis of which informs the business decisions at the firm’s London HQ. Emerald Life provides Home & Contents, Life, Pet, Wedding and Travel Insurance. Visit www.emeraldlife.co.uk for your FREE quote.
Available now, Emerald’s travel insurance boasts ground breaking features including Consular Assist – a helpline should travellers face difficulties whilst abroad – which can include in country support. This is the first time that such a feature has been available in the UK, and is being launched by Emerald specifically in light of some of the extra help LGBT travellers may need. The policy also offers family cover that includes foster, surrogate and adopted children. Crucially, Emerald’s premiums do not automatically increase for those who are HIV+, something many insurers across the industry still unfairly do. The introduction of this new product comes as the same Emerald YouGov survey revealed LGBT people are driving a national boom in overseas travel this summer, yet only a third has any travel insurance, leaving many worryingly exposed to large costs should something go wrong whilst on holiday. Heidi McCormack, CEO of Emerald Life described how quickly the cost of something going wrong on an overseas trip can escalate, "Our insurance is designed to give you peace of mind at a fraction of the cost of something that could go wrong”. During the visit to Brighton, Heidi McCormack and her business partner, Steve Wardlaw, met with Brighton LGBT residents, members of the press, and the former Minister and MP for Hove Ivor Caplin. The firm also announced plans to visit five further cities around the UK to meet with community members to try to understand better why insurance companies are met with so much suspicion by gay people. > Hot for cold

fter four days suffering with a filthy cold I felt a desperate need to do something to make me feel better – in every sense. My sense of taste and of smell had been all but eradicated, my head felt leaden and the tastiest thing I had consumed for a few days had been a glass of water, yes it was that bad. Solution, a trip to the Curry Leaf Cafe for a dose of chef Kanthi's spirit lifting and soul reviving food. First though a cocktail, created by Max from The Cocktail Shack, a water melon drink with a real kick, I was soon feeling better. And with a £1 contribution to Fare Share included I felt a tiny glow of doing something good. On chef's recommendation I started with Hydrabadi Lamb Boti Kebab, a spicy and fragrant dish of tender lamb zingy with chilli and tempered with a sharp salad, fresh lime and a wonderful apricot chutney. A dish of Persian influence I was told and I loved it, the heady spices cleared my head in every way. Sticking with chef's advice I went on to feast on Madurai Kohzi Kulambu. This was a rich chicken dish with lashings of delicious sauce and a massive amount of sweet meat too. The Tamil Nadu sauce was heady with spices and enriched with coconut milk. It was fiery and yet soothing, just what I needed and the rice and daal and sweet potato sides offered great balance. I was feeling better, much better and decided to finish with some of the wonderful icecream that the restaurant creates with local gelato meister Seb Cole from Boho Gelato. The mango and cardamom was good if a little underpowered, this
could have been my depleted palate, but the watermelon and mint sorbet was a triumph, truly delicious. With an everchanging menu Curry Leaf Cafe is always deserving of a visit and a few words here. 60 Ship St, Brighton BN1 1AE Sun – Thurs: 123pm & 610pm Fri & Sat: 123pm & 610:30pm 01273 207070 curryleafcafe.com

ran through early highlights from their cassette only album before a stillfresh 'Go Wild In The Country' really got the crowd moving. Aside from an acoustic 'Man Mountain' it was tribal rhythms throughout with Annabella proving herself an energetic and forthright leader. A new song was well received and the show ended with their biggest hit 'I Want Candy'. Sticky Mike's Frog Bar, 9 August 2016 Steve Clements ★★★★★

ery much now a tradition, The Wedding Present once again have organised an eclectic and adventurous programme, featuring friends, family and acts they simply admire, at the legendary Concorde 2. Apparently sketched out on the veritable napkin in a roadside cafe, The Wedding Present's founder and frontman David Gedge took the idea to Lout Promotions and ever since they have put together the event since 2009. This is their eighth year. Confirmed acts this year include The Wedding Present themselves, doing their yearly Brighton gig, plus their alteregos Cinerama, who recently released their first album in years, last year, in the form of a rehashed version of The Wedding Present's Valentina. Then there is a rare gig for the Welsh language indierock group Melys, who formed back in 1996, and who recorded 11 John Peel sessions; Astrid Wiliamson and former Wedding Present bassist Terry de Castro performing murder ballads; psychedelic country punks Mermaid Noises; Brighton based electrofolk poppers Such Small Hands; Jonny 8 Track, Bar Creeps; and the wonderful altorchestralfolk of Collectress. Because the venue could not be secured over the usual Bank Holiday weekend, At The Edge of the Sea has reverted to being a oneday event this year, as it was when it was first put on. > 21 hour performance to help restore a valuable grand piano at St Luke’s Church
H
ave you ever been to a 21 hour piano marathon? You haven’t?! Well neither have I admittedly, but there is a unique chance to see one at St Luke’s Church this weekend. Erik Satie’s ‘Vexations’ asks for 840 repetitions of a short piano piece, which he composed in 1893 following a difficult break up with his girlfriend. Full performances of the piece are rare: it wasn’t performed in its entirety until 1963 in a concert arranged by John Cage. This bank holiday weekend 21 hour marathon concert is in aid of a 100 year old New York Steinway piano, the grand piano of St Luke’s Church. They aim to raise £10,000 to repair flaws such as a split in the soundboard, and a similar piano might cost £50,000 to buy outright. You can find out more by searching ‘piano history’ at the latest.co.uk to watch a short news piece. The performance will see 37 pianists playing all through the night, as well as counting each other’s repetitions with a live number board, so there will be a lovely air of drama and serene excitement about the place. It should be a nice atmosphere and a fun concert to dip into, and you would be supporting a fine musical cause. You are also allowed to bring a sleeping bag if you go for the long haul and want to doze off! If you can’t make it then you can still donate at crowdfunding.justgiving.com/pianorestoration. Performers include Helen Burford, Adam Swayne, Guy Richardson, Peter Copley, Emma Field, John Fryer and many more: the list can be viewed in full on Swayne’s website below. Vexations, St Luke’s Church, Fri/Sat 26/27 Aug, 7.30pm to 4.30pm. £3 to £7, www.adamswayne.com/vexations/

TUESDAY 16 Olympics 2016 BBC2, 6pm Hazel Irvine introduces live gymnastics, including the men’s parallel bars final. There’s also the women’s floor, featuring British pair Ellie Downie and Claudia Fragapane.
An Hour To Save Your Life BBC2, 9pm This medical science series explores the life or death decisions facing doctors in the first critical hour of emergency care. WEDNESDAY 17 Skies Above Britain BBC2, 9pm It’s about time things started looking up – and in looking up took a bit of a delight at the wonders to be found in the skies. This new series kicks off exploring how our skies are safeguarded by air traffic control. Like when a typhoon jet is sent by the RAF to intercept an unresponsive plane. Pretty cool.
A Granny’s Guide To The Modern World Channel 4, 10.30pm If you’ve ever felt out of touch with the modern world, don’t know your Facebook poke from your Pokemon Go, or that TOWIE isn’t something you get for your car when it breaks down on the motorway – you’re in top company. Barry Humphries and co lift the lid on modern mysteries.
Family Guy ITV2, 10.55pm Famous people have quirks too. This is something we’ve already learned from The Simpsons when people like Alec Baldwin and George Bush had a go at being Springfield neighbours. For a little more subversion though Family Guy looks to Ryan Reynolds, who visits Quahog and becomes obsessed with Peter. Of course.
