> The Stars on Broadway

I

f you have ever wondered where you could rub shoulders with the stars of stage and screen in Brighton, then it's best to keep an eye on what's going on at Bar Broadway on Steine Street. Just lately Duncan James, from boyband Blue, has performed at Bar Broadway, with the cast of Pricilla Queen Of The Desert, as has Denise Black, from Queer As Folk and Emmerdale. Also the cast of Hairspray with Tony Moudsley from the TV show Benidorm, have performed there too!

“ One of the bar staff has recently appeared on First Dates ” Bar Broadway is owned by business partners Alasdair Jarvie and Michael McGarrigle. Jointly they have made it into a most fabulous venue and I believe it's possibly the most friendly bar in Brighton. How could it not be with the great customer service from the bar staff (one of which has just appeared on the TV show First Dates) and the catchy show tunes that are played on large screens. You can't help sing along and that's just downstairs! Upstairs there is the theatre bar 'The Gods'. It's here you can see some great shows including a couple of nights of stand up comedy. On the last Saturday of every month it's 'Giggle at the Gods', six comedians from London and the South and it's only £3 entry. Also there is the comedy show 'It Is What It Is' with Trickstar Radio DJs, Will Rankin and James Pryor. I highly recommend these nights if you like stand up. Tickets for all the events and shows at Bar Broadway can be booked in advance on the Bar Broadway app which you can get on Google Play or the App Store. www.barbroadway.co.uk 4 | LATEST 7

DOGGY TALES > The Lion King

E

very week Latest 7 will regale you with tales about the dogs who reside in Brighton (via their owners) and also introduce you to rescue dogs, hoping to find forever homes. This week, meet Symba the Chow Chow, who is owned by Niel Driver... “Symba is four and half years old and we have had him since he was 12 weeks old. When we first met him, he was one of three two boys and a girl. We came along just in time to take him home, as the others had been snapped up already! “He was quite tiny when we got him and would fit into an Ikea blue bag in which we carried him around until he was old enough to walk around on his own after his inoculations. The Chow Chow breed comes from China and in olden times Chinese gentry ate them as a delicacy. “He’s very inquisitive and will stand and watch what people are doing for ages, but will not let anyone touch him at all (except for his daddy and uncle). He loves the attention of people looking at him and knows to look at people when they are talking about him, but will not let them touch him, he turns away. But once they walk off he will stand and look at them and then us as if to say "what was all that about?".

“His kennel club name is Winston King Stanley but we named him Symba because of his little lion cub features when he was a puppy. He gets called and answers to a variety of names now though, including: Daddy’s Little Soldier, Our Little Monkey and most often Simpson! I think that should have been his name.”

his week Latest 7 discovered this iconic image of Iris, played by Jodie Foster, in the classic ‘70s film Taxi Driver. Robert De Niro, who starred along side Jodie, thought the film had the potential to be a something people would still be talking about 50 years later. We’re still a decade away from knowing that for sure, but it’s safe to assume he was right!

hat’s in a name? When a friend introduces me to someone new I’m asked – ‘what do you like to be called?’. Well, I’ve answered to a number over the years, ranging from ‘Big Bird’ to ‘Nangleburger’ (don’t ask!), and still the name my family calls me is different from the one my friends who have known me for decades use. I haven’t done anything risky to have garnered a nickname – I am not ‘The Birdwoman of Worthing’, and the only reason I was ‘The Jolly Green Giant’ at school was because I was always first in the queue for school dinners. And I’m tall. Oh yes, that’s got a lot of name mileage. Welcome to ‘Big Bird’, ‘Mummy Long Legs’ and ‘The BFG’. I’m still not sure what I like to be called though. No longer will the retort: “I don’t mind so long as it’s not ‘mug’!” do. Should we be able to adopt new names partway through our lives? I know a couple of friends who have done just that, but I’m not sure if I know what my chosen name would then become either. There are so many words... I couldn’t even confidently name a hamster. So ‘Nangle’ will have to do. It’s grown on me. And if you say it lots you sound like a lowflying light aircraft! LATEST 7 | 5

THE DRESSER > Rare chance to see a prestigious revival of ‘The Dresser’ at the Theatre Royal Brighton before it transfers to the West End

S

tellar actors Ken Stott and Reece Shearsmith star in this eagerly awaited new production of The Dresser, which visits Theatre Royal Brighton as part of a very limited tour before opening in London. Set backstage in a provincial theatre during World War II, The Dresser explores the relationship between two men who are reluctantly and inevitably codependent. An ageing, once famous classical actor is troubled. Sir, the last in a dying breed of great English Shakespearean actors, is unwilling to take to the stage to deliver his renowned portrayal of King Lear. It falls to his faithful dresser Norman to rouse another great performance from him, to keep both the show and its star from falling apart. First performed in 1980 in the West End and on Broadway, the play was in 1983 made into a multi award winning film starring Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay and a BBC television film starring Ian McKellen and Anthony Hopkins last year. The production is directed by Sean Foley, whose production of Jeeves and Wooster in Perfect Nonsense played to packed houses at

Theatre Royal Brighton in 2013. Ken Stott’s last appearance at Theatre Royal Brighton was in Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge, a performance which was highly acclaimed. He has received four Best Actor Olivier Award nominations for his work at the National Theatre and in the West End in The Recruiting Officer, Broken Glass (for which he won Best Actor in a Supporting Role), Art with Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay, and A View from the Bridge. His film credits include The Hobbit, Charlie Wilson’s War and The Chronicles of Narnia, and his television credits include the critically acclaimed BBC series The Missing, for which he received a BAFTA nomination, and Rebus, the Ian Rankin crime drama in which Ken played the title role. Reece Shearsmith recently appeared in the Olivier and South Bank Awardwinning Hangmen at the Royal Court. His other theatre credits include Absent Friends at the Harold Pinter Theatre, Comedians at the Lyric Theatre and The Producers at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. He is perhaps best known for his starring roles in the multiawardwinning cult television series The League of Gentlemen and its spinoffs Inside No. 9 and Psychoville. His film credits include High Rise, Shaun of the Dead and Birthday Girl. Ronald Harwood is an Academy Award, Palme d’Or and BAFTAwinning screenwriter and playwright, whose films include The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, The Pianist, Quartet and Love in the Time of Cholera. His plays include The Dresser, Taking Sides, Quartet, Mahler’s Conversion, An English Tragedy and Collaboration and Degenerate Art. Advanced sales for The Dresser are extremely strong, so early booking is highly recommended.

TASTE SENSATIONS > Exciting news about a brand new Aladdin’s cave for Foodies – The Great British Chacuterie Co.

T

he Great British Charcuterie co. is an exciting new concept retail outlet situated in the heart of Brighton Marina offering over 150 lines of cured meats and cheeses, all sliced and packed to order and all produced right here in the UK by small artisan farms and producers. Manager Jack Robinson and owner Phil Bartley aim to showcase these outstanding products and to work with the producers who create them to raise awareness of the ‘bang on

trend’ British artisan food scene, and what better place to start than the up and coming Brighton Marina. The business was started this year by Phil Bartley with the help of his parents Simon and Linda Bartley, and is a venture born from Phil’s experience running two of Brighton & Hove’s most successful kitchens at The Cricketers on Black Lion Street and Hove Place on First Avenue for over five years – with both pubs operated by another longstanding, local family run business, The Golden Lion Group. Jack and Phil have also been working closely with many local suppliers such as Beal’s Farm in Chailey, run by Phil and Melissa who raise rare breed Mangalitza pigs and create some 8 | LATEST 7

amazing charcuterie, including – in Phil’s words – “The best ham you’ll taste anywhere”. High praise indeed! Central to their company’s ethos is the welfare of the animals from which these stunning products are produced. They take great care when selecting to ensure they only work with farms and producers who practice the highest level of animal welfare, and they are adamant that only the happiest of animals can produce the best cheese and charcuterie. As you walk around the shop you will find many weird and wonderful cheeses such as the soon to be famous charcoal cheddar, a jet black cheese which we’re told is a tangy cheddar folded with coal dust and has started to garner a local cult following – with whispers of a delicious black cheese spreading around the Brighton foodie scene. Also on offer is a rather attractive semi soft cheese, Burwash Rose, made by The Traditional Cheese Company here in Sussex. The cheeses are actually washed in rose water which gives them an attractive pinkish rind and a rather unique smell. One of Phil’s favourites, we’re told. True to their company’s namesake, the range of British charcuterie available is truly amazing with over fifty unique products including some fantastic air dried hams, locally produced cured Sussex beef, a mindboggling array of salamis and the infamous beersticks – small, thin, chewy salamis made by John and Jose at Moons Green charcuterie in Northiam. If all this cheese and meat isn’t enough to get you on the number 7 bus to the marina then how about some wine? The Great British Charcuterie Co. also aims to have the LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

largest selection of English wines on the market, with the current selection totalling over fifty carefully selected varieties. Jack says that by Christmas that count could reach over one hundred bottles with the high quality of wines currently being produced by British vineyards. We noticed that the fantastic local Ridgeview sparkling wines are taking centre stage behind the dark wood and galvanised steel semi industrial looking counter. The boys are passionate about what they do and openly encourage customers to taste the products before they buy. Each wheel of cheese and every stick of salami is unique and they believe that this is something that should be recognised and cherished. “Today’s best salami may not be tomorrow’s, but how will we know without tasting them all?!” The Great British Charcuterie Co. are open now and can be found at Unit 40 Brighton Marina, right next to the Harvester Pub. 01273 695278 www.thegreatbritishchacuterie.co.uk

or someone who moves house at least once a year – I’m not very good at goodbyes. Saying that I’m also not very good at packing either. So here I am packing up boxes for a new job and I’m saying goodbye. I’m going to forget something and I’m going to forget someone, I just know it. However I’m looking forward to the new adventure. This time I’m not just changing postcodes, I’m changing countries. With my move I’ve decided I need a clean break – I’ve ended it with Peyton. Too many arguments and it was just not worth it especially since I don’t know when I will see him again. Also Greg? Well that was a nonstarter that I would have very much liked to pursue but that’s out of the question now. So this is me single still. Something I’ve gotten very used to over the years. I’ve enjoyed my little fling but at the end of the day boys will come and go but I’ve got to look after me. I’m not sure how sane I would have been if I stayed with both of them. Now there’s no more awkward social gatherings where I have to explain why I’m spending so much time with someone who I’m not dating – we all have a sex drive, you know. Also I will no longer have to worry if it’s all too good to be true because it was true. I did have my cake and eat it too. It was just a cupcake and it didn’t last too long. While this dabble with men is clearly over and I’m off to greener shores I’m not taking myself out of the game. I just need a break from this drama and need to figure out what I really want. At the moment, at least, it’s a good job far from here. See you later.

ackpacks, or rucksacks as they were called in my youth. I remember well borrowing one from an aunt to take on my first ever holiday without the parents. I say holiday, but it was more a form of torture. Much as I love the Lake District, trundling through it with a metal framed and heavy canvas monster on my back was a hot, tiring and unpleasantly sweaty ordeal. From there grew my dislike of the backpack and my love of better designed luggage. Good luggage has becomes an obsession and I have bags for all occasions. Brighton and Hove is a magnet for backpack users, at times the brightly coloured back pack toting foreign students are scary, like swarms of insects.

“ I was subjected to a barrage of abuse” The real trouble is on the bus and I am a bus user, I love them. A few days ago I was travelling into town and boarded a bus. I waved my electronic ticket at the driver and turned to find a seat. There, in the narrowest part of the bus was a man, around my age, wearing a huge backpack which made it impossible for me to pass. I suggested he take it off and place it on the luggage rack, after all that is what it is there for. He refused and I was forced to squeeze past almost knocking him over. I found a seat and was then subjected to a barrage of abuse after which he finally removed the backpack and weaved toward me. On reaching me he then demanded that I stand up to let him sit down. There were plenty of other seats to be had so I refused. I was not being difficult but I was suffering the pangs of a gout attack that day and given that he was at most only a few years older than me I decided to stay put and suffer his abuse. I have for years stood up on buses to let people who clearly were in more need of a seat than me, but I'm 60 now and I feel that it's my turn to sit down. How odd it is that people seem to feel the need to stand in that narrow part of the lower deck even if there are seats to be had. Are buses some sort of white knuckle ride? Please, if you must, take the bag off your back! LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

W

ell a week on from the Autumn manifestation of the Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival and I think that I have just recovered. I love it, every moment is fun – but my word it's tiring. Thank heavens then for the fabulous audiences who turned up for the whole event across the bank holiday weekend and in particular to those who came along to watch me and some brilliant chefs on stage at the Live Food Show. I've been hosting this for 13 years now and year on year I am always impressed by the chefs who join me and generously provide food and time to entertain and I hope inform our audiences. This year I was joined on stage by a talented crew of culinary stars who were charged with cooking game as our sponsors were Taste The Game, a national organisation who promote the eating of game and the best practice in rearing and shooting it. On Saturday I was joined by Andy Vitez from The Restaurant at Drakes who made three stunning dishes including an extraordinarily tasty marrow dish that converted many of us to that unloved vegetable. Master Chef The Professionals winner Steven Edwards proved exactly why he was the winner with a magical pigeon dish, I cannot wait for him to open his new restaurant which I hear will be in Hove, more of that very soon. Kurt Cutajar from the Hilton Metropole cooked a favourite from his home country Malta with a stunning rabbit dish.

On Sunday Dan Cotton from Market impressed with a venison dish coupled with plums and hazelnuts, and very good it was too. Kanthi Thamma from Curry Leaf Cafe blew us away with pigeon in a vibrant green herb and fresh spice marinade and finally I was joined on stage by Kirti from Azaro who made a stunning venison rogan josh and revealed the secret of making an inpressive pilau rice. It was late on Sunday that my festival colleagues approached me and asked me if I could cook again on monday – ALL DAY! Well I had cooked on the Saturday, making a spiced fillet of venison which I served with potato cakes, buttered garlic spinach and fig salsa. I had also made fresh mint and coriander chicken thighs in a galangal and chilli yoghurt marinade with lemon and lime mayonnaise and spiced coconut crumb. I had also thrown together a lemon, lime and Sussex mead syllabub using Sarah Thompson's delicious Southdown mead. What was I worrying about, 5 hours on stage cooking live for an audience of serious food lovers? A walk in the park! A very long walks as it turned out but a fun one as I repeated the spiced fillet, made a delicious if I say it myself venison Wellington with mushroom and Tarragon stuffing and a venison tartare which I think converted a lot of people to the whole idea of raw quality meat, and I stress that you have to be confident of that quality. Oh yes I repeated the syllabub, well why not I thought. It was fun, it reminded me how good the city's restaurant scene now is and it also reminded me that my love of eating out grew from my love of eating in.

or some of us it’s nostalgia, for some a passion for retro but without a doubt there is magic in the music of one of America’s most successful exports, Tamla Motown. Some of us will remember it from the first time round, some from the merciless pillaging of it in subsequent soul based musical genres who would sample licks, riffs and lines from Motown’s greatest hits to create the catchy hooks in their new tunes. Whatever you love is based on Motown, it is as captivating now as it was when it hit the charts the firsts time around over 50 years ago. he Bank Holiday weekend party started early with the already roasting venue becoming saunalike with a nonstop, hitsheavy set of hot heavy funk, fiery Latin disco and sweet summer soul. Incredibly the band is still led by its founder, 84 year old Bill Curtis, who looked resplendent in African robes as he beat out the rhythm on timbales and cowbells. The whole band shared vocals and were right on the money for classics such as ‘Wicky Wacky’, ‘Bus Stop’ and ‘Spanish Hustle’. The joyfilled night ended on a high with a euphoric version of ’80s club anthem ‘I Found Lovin’. Concorde 2, 25 August 2016 Steve Clements ★★★★★

A

vibrant, festivalesque events group are celebrating their 1st anniversary in Brighton with a totallytropical bonanza at Komedia on September 9: music, performance and dance fuelled party sounds of reggae, brass, afrobeat and dub sounds are the order of the day. From hosting Cathedral carnivals to Palm House parties across the country, Fiesta Bombarda celebrate their first Brighton anniversary by bringing former Brighton resident Ed Solo to the stage alongside The Future Dub Project and Tru Thoughts' Ed West. Honing his skills as a junglist before ducking and diving through every style of broken beat going, his stamp on electronic music runs very deep, starting in London in the mid90s where he cut his teeth by engineering the likes of Blak Twang and Roots Manuva before laying down groundbreaking collaborations with jungle kingpin DJ Brockie including ‘Represents’ and ‘Echo Box’. Next was Brighton and into a studio above Krafty Kuts record shop where Ed produced many seminal Breakbeat tracks leading to 2007’s album ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ alongside Skool of Thought and Darrisson, bringing him to a wider audience. Since then Ed has been enjoying making a wide range of styles but he’s best known for his own crowdpleasing reggae and drum'n'bass tracks from remixing Chronixx to Sizzla to original recordings with Elijah and Stickybudz. Komedia, Fri 9 Sept, 11pm, £711

> Special film screenings premiere new music from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

T

he first opportunity to hear any songs from the new Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds album 'Skeleton Tree' will be at screenings of the new feature film 'One More Time With Feeling' the day before release day: similar to recent innovative strategies from Frank Ocean and Beyoncé. Cave approached Andrew Dominik (who directed the brilliant ‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford’) about making a film focusing on the recording and performing of the new Bad Seeds album around the tragic time of Cave's son's death. Dominik explains that: “My immediate response was “Why do you want to do this?”. Nick told me that he had some things he needed to say, but he didn’t know who to say them to. The idea of a traditional interview, he said, was simply unfeasible but he felt a need to let the people who cared about his music understand the basic state of things. It seemed to me that he was trapped somewhere and just needed to do something – anything – to at least give the impression of forward movement.” Filmed in blackandwhite and colour in both 3D and 2D, Dominik claims that the haunted drama of the 3D images “perfectly address the disembodied sound of the record and the weird sense of paralysis that Nick seemed to exist in at the time”. I am personally looking forward to hearing the new music but am also curious and almost wary as to how raw and sad the experience might be. Some of the best art can be the most disarming however, and the filmmaker and musician's ambition and honesty can only be applauded. At the time of writing there are still tickets available on Thursday 8th September at the Cineworld in the Marina, but also check availability at Eastbourne, Worthing, Chichester, Crawley and Picturehouse cinemas too.

S

ami Stone has done it again. Fresh back from a monthlong run of her acclaimed solo show ‘Roof’, Stone is running and hosting a fabulous fundraiser for Medecins Sans Frontieres (aka Doctors Without Borders) over at the Ropetackle Centre this weekend. Joining the talented Stone are David Mills with acidtongued satire, Sameena Zehra combining the tricky combo of warmth and politics and funny, Jessica Fostekew and her tight standup stories, and finally Rosie Wilby’s dry evocative humour. It’s jampacked, and for a fabulous humanitarian cause. Another show drawing the crowds this Saturday is Sue Perkins’ stand up and book tour, promoting her recent memoir ‘Spectacles’, with the price of the ticket including a copy of the tome. She’s signing copies afterwards, if you’d care to queue, but

for those not literaryminded the show also promises to touch on Mary Berry, cakes, and other comic treats. Comedy Sans Frontiere, Saturday 10 September, Ropetackle Centre, 8.15pm, £16.50/14 Sue Perkins – Spectacles, Saturday 10 September, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 7.30pm, £25.50

So look forward to the upcoming show by Ian Boutell and Michael Hutley, the friends who met doing a Fine Art degree at Northbrook College and will be exhibiting at the Gloucester Road venue from 19 September. Formerly an architect, Ian now creates layered perspex constructions and abstract paintings underpinned by the themes of structure and fluidity that reflect his view of the world. Michael explores the world through painting and photography, attempting to capture his response by suspending critical judgement. Eyecatching images, and activities or events that attract his attention, are photographed or drawn then worked on later as collages, drawings or paintings. > Meet Erik Selby, Latest TV’s channel manager

L

atest TV has been around for two years now, yes that's two years with hundreds of thousands of hours of original content created by our small, hard working, ambitious team of staff. I joined Latest TV in April this year, I've seen how much care and passion goes into the work that our team produce on a daily basis, in order to provide entertainment, news, and top quality programmes, so that the people of Brighton and Hove and beyond can tune in, for free, on Freeview 7, 24/7!

“ I’ve seen how much care and

passion goes into the work that our team produce on a daily basis ”

As the channel manager for Latest TV, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some of Brighton's most dedicated and amazingly kind hearted people, the individuals and teams that keep Brighton running year in year out. I'd not been to Brighton before I moved here for work but I had always been told good things – my only niggles are probably the lack of parking and the general cleanliness of the city, but there's always room for improvement everywhere you go. Now that I've had a few months to settle down I can start helping with that directly. I come from a background of working for local TV stations around the country and I truly believe that we have such a great opportunity to change people's lives, and I don't just mean for our thousands of viewers, I mean for the younger generation that want careers in the media. Local TV is where I started, and it's where I stayed – I love it! 18 | LATEST 7

TUESDAY 6 Location, Location, Location Channel 4, 8pm Jemma and Graham have been ‘careful’ with money. They’ve saved, they’ve lived frugally, which means that for over 20 years they have saved £300,000 for their own home in Southendon-Sea. Flippin’ impressive! Now, if Phil can only get them to imagine parting with the cash a home might be on the horizon.

Motherland BBC2, 10pm With the film ‘Bad Moms’ out in the cinemas, the subject of Alpha Mums is in vogue with comedy writers at the moment. Maybe a bit revenge-y? This sitcom pilot follows uber-organised mother Amanda, hot mess Mum Liz, inbetween Julia, and stay-athome dad Kevin, navigating parenthood and each other.

All Together Now: The Great Orchestra Challenge BBC4, 9pm Not so much of a search for a star, more a search for lots of shining tightly together and in tune in an amateur orchestra. No small feat. Five have become four after last week’s knock out, and this time their challenge is to get to grips with opera, performing with real live opera singers. Coo.
