DOGGY TALES > Oh my Pugness!
P
ugs are often described by the latin phrase ‘multum in parvo' which translated means: 'a lot of dog in a small space'. This description aptly describes their fun and charming personalities. Although the breed is strong willed, these dogs are rarely aggressive, which makes them the perfect family pet. This week meet Pug half sisters, Daphne (fawn) and Betty (black) owned by Col Lapse: “We got Daphne when she was six weeks old, she will be nine this November. We went all the way to Yorkshire to get her, then nine months later we went back to get Betty, who is now eight. “We named Daphne after Jack Lemmon in the film ‘Some Like It Hot’ and named Betty after Betty Boo. Betty likes to lick Daphne's ear and can high five anyone for a treat. Daphne has lost most of her bottom teeth so her tongue sticks out and she loves peanut butter! “If they were famous people, they would be Del Boy and Rodney Trotter when they dressed up as Batman and Robin in the famous sketch: they think they are superhero dogs but in fact they are super comedy fools!”

The reason I chose to embed art into 'street furniture' was to offer a visual alternative to all the commercial advertising that saturates our environment. Why cassettes? I wanted something abstract and out of place.”

here once was a zoo. It wasn’t a very big zoo, but the animals liked it and the staff enjoyed working there. There was a giraffe named Gerald, a monkey named Mike, a penguin named Polly and a hippo named Holly. They were all really good friends. Then, one day, the zoo bought two crocodiles, both named Croc. “Hi”, said Gerald. “Welcome to the zoo. What are your names?” “Thanks, said Croc. "I’m Croc, and this is Croc.” “That’s funny. How come you’re both called that?” asked Susan. “Well we’ve both got different other names, but Croc is a very common first name for us crocodiles. It’s the way we’ve always done things.” Then one day, the staff at the zoo decided it would be fun to do a survey to find out the most common animal name at the zoo. To their surprise, it turned out to be Croc. “That’s not really that surprising”, said Mike. “They’ve already explained that most crocodiles are called at least some variant of Croc, and the rest of us are called different names.” “You’re right”, agreed Polly, and they all carried on with their day without wilfully and idiotically misreading a perfectly understandable and logical statistic. The end. LATEST 7 | 5

A CROSS BETWEEN BRAM STOKER’S LIVING ROOM AND THE BRIDGE OF H.G. WELLS’ NAUTILUS > Step back in time to a future that never existed
O
K I admit it, I was wrong. I had always maintained that subcultures are inherently exclusive and if you are not part of the club you are unlikely to feel comfortable. I was wrong. Although being a Steampunker might not be for everyone, The Yellow Book certainly is! Brighton is full of cliquey quirky places but finding a quirky place that you feel at home in almost immediately is much much harder. Located on York Place opposite St Peter’s Church, The Yellow Book is the UK’s first Steampunk bar and has an atmosphere that is absolutely unique.
“ A living immersive retrofuturistic
diorama, a what if Victorian vision of the future” For many people Steampunk is something entirely new. Just the word punk conjures up a vision of vivid red Mohicans, tartan trousers and safety pins. Nothing could be further from the truth. Steampunk is nostalgia for what never was, a living immersive retrofuturistic diorama, a what if Victorian vision of the future. The science fiction of H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and

My partner and I were greeted with an old world courtesy that rather took me aback, being more used to 21st century brashness. We had found ourselves drawn in, curious about decor that we just couldn’t place which nonetheless seemed strangely familiar. Best described as a cross between Bram Stoker’s living room and the bridge of H.G. Wells’ Nautilus, it wasn’t just the decor that had intrigued us. The barman sported one of the most magnificent moustaches I have ever seen, a top hat with goggles and a leather waistcoat adorned with a pocket watch and cogs. The

carved mahogany bar itself was straight out of a Sherlock Holmes story whilst above the hand operated dumb waiter there was the largest oval clock I have ever seen inside a building. Perched above the clock stood a stuffed crow who I later found out was called Edgar, Edgar Allan Crow. Set into the floor is perhaps one of the most remarkable features, a wine cellar filled with champagne which apparently goes right to the centre of the earth. Walking across it for the first time is an experience not soon forgotten. Our host enquired as to whether I cared to sample their own ale, Airship Ale. A barrel on the bar is almost unheard of these days but would have been quite common back in 1870. I approached it with some trepidation as anything at only 3.6% is usually utterly without body and not worthy of drinking. To my considerable surprise Airship Ale is robust and full of flavour. In the meantime my companion had been inspecting the cocktail menu, no run of the mill ordinary drinks here (although if you really do want an Old Fashioned or a Whisky Sour they will make it for you). Names such as Crimson Temptress, Typhoid Mary and Hysterical Lady had caught her eye, there was even a Pan Galactic Gargleblaster in a nod to 1970’s scifi. Torn between Mead (made from honey and about the strength of wine) served by the glass and a cocktail she finally settled on a Strawberry Tart which turned out to be made with a homemade strawberry vodka infusion. The staff of The Yellow Book are time travellers trapped in the 21st century, unable to return to the 19th due to a terrible accident. One of their number, Lady Antonia LewellynAnderson (Lala to her friends and Dipsy behind her back) turns out to be a dab hand in creating alcoholic infusions. If you like Martinis you really haven’t lived until you try one made from her Saffron and Orange Gin. While we were there it became apparent that The Yellow Book avoids many of the pitfalls that beset more conventional establishments. The Victorian values of courtesy and good manners mean that single ladies and families find a welcome not always accorded elsewhere. Indeed a quick look through reviews left on a number of websites confirmed this. Don’t think that an evening at The Yellow Book is going to be all genteel, restrained and painfully polite. The atmosphere can get very lively indeed as live entertainment is clearly a very important part of the Steampunk universe.

We weren’t able to identify a particular genre that goes with it, the key musical element seems to be foot stomping rousing good fun but there are also weekly open mic nights which heavily feature poetry. Entertainers due to play at The Yellow Book include international hip hop star Professor Elemental and Phil “Swill” Odgers, lead vocalist from The Men They Couldn’t Hang. They even have an old fashioned story teller who enthrals the audience with his tales several times a year. Check their website (www.yellowbookbrighton.com) or Facebook page for details of upcoming events.

righton & Hove City Council is reminding residents that they have just a few weeks left to complete their household enquiry form, which they should have received. Residents are being asked to let the council know whether the information printed on the form is correct or needs updating. There are a number of ways to respond, including online, by text or over the phone. Canvassers will be visiting residents who haven’t responded between 7 October and 7 November to urge them to return their forms so that they do not lose their right to vote. To avoid that call, please respond as soon as possible! The aim is to ensure that the electoral register is up to date and to identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so.

The council’s Head of Life Events, Paul Holloway, said: “You cannot vote if you are not registered. To make sure you can have your say in any future elections, simply check the form when it arrives and return it to us as quickly as possible. “It should only take you a minute or two, and it could improve your credit rating. If you’re not currently registered, please reply and we’ll send you further information explaining how to do this. “Or you can simply go online to apply to register at www.gov.uk/registertovote “It’s particularly important for anyone who has moved address recently to check whether they are registered. Research indicates that nationally recent home movers are far less likely to be registered than those that have lived at the same address for a long time. “According to the Electoral Commission, 87% of homeowners are registered, while only 56% of private renters are.”
If you have any questions about registering to vote, please Email: electors@brightonhove.gov.uk Phone: the council’s electoral services team on 01273 291999, or Write: to Electoral Services, Town Hall, Brighton, BN1 1JA.

hen I was a student in London a few years before I started my course the physical college I would have been attending was sold off. The actual building. I even attended a life drawing class on that very site to bolster my A Level Art portfolio. To sound less impressive – I filled up my sketch book with naked people and then panicked and pretended they were a study for a batik of ladies in the niff. The point was, the building was in the expensive area of leafygreen Hampstead, and when the college that owned it merged with another college based in the East End everyone upped sticks, flogged the location and built a new building by the canal in Mile End. The Queen opened it, it was a lovely day. Years later and the BBC essentially did the same thing. Why make programmes in pricey London when Manchester is just asking for hundreds of mediatypes to uproot their families and plonk themselves there? Let’s sell off the iconic building, sod the Blue Peter garden, and never mind the history. And I feel that this is happening a lot. It’s just not affordable to work in the capital unless your business is making a lot of capital. Great news for places like Brighton, where the start ups go to feel all groovy, but a bit soulless for what was once a bustling and diverse metropolis. It’s still bustling – just try the tube in rush hour – but that hotbed of originality is haemorrhaging its many flavours. Maybe that’s a good thing. For too long everything has been about London. But like the British Empire that launched there, it might take London a while to twig it’s no longer king of the castle. Its jewels are coming to us. In fact, we’ve already got loads of its sparklies, thank you very much, mingling with our gems stunningly.

t's 38 years since I graduated from Chelsea School of Art and since then the building has been pulled down and replaced, the school has become a part of a much larger organisation and moved to Millbank where it now occupies a rather grand old building with lots of character bang next door to Tate Britain, prestigious or what? It has also been renamed Chelsea College of Arts. I rather liked it being school but that I guess is progress. A week ago I was invited along to see the postgraduate degree shows for students in the Spatial Design department and in particular the work of a friend. I was slightly unnerved to be going back after such a long absence and for the first time to the new incarnation but I need not have been afraid, I loved it. Loved it so much that I hankered to be back, to be in the vibrant creative environment simply buzzing with ideas and energy. Not that it was all good, far from it. I enjoyed seeing the postgrad graphic designers’ work, some of which put a smile on my face but a lot which made me frown. I guess the course is aimed at creative development but I did not see much that had any form of graphic application. Fine Art was definitely a mixed bag, some genuinely stunning work sat side by side with work that I would have labelled plagiarism, really, I was shocked and dismayed. Some however was very impressive and I wished that more of the students had been there to talk to. Finally Spatial Design, here I was most impressed by a wide range of intelligent and creative thought and beautifully, on the whole, realisations of those ideas. Would I go back? Maybe, perhaps, mmmmm maybe not, it was great to see the shows and talk about the work but at the end of my time there I was happy that I had once been a part of such an exciting institution that upholds such high standards.

hen I was a little girl I remember watching Richard Digance on TV with my Mum. We would laugh together at his funny comedy songs. So imagine how thrilled I was to be asked to be his opening act at Azure in Hastings, a night promoted by Alistair Martin, (who is a fantastic hypnotist and has a great show himself). Richard Digance, for those who don't know, is a comedian and folk singer who appeals to all age groups and will be celebrating 50 years of songs and stories with his Golden
“ When I got to meet him I wasn’t disappointed. He’s charming! ” Anniversary Show in 2017. It will be his 64th British tour and will be supported by acoustic duo 'The Broadside boys'. In the ‘70s Richard Digance toured America and supported acts like the actor/comedian Steve Martin and also singer Tom Jones. By the ‘80s Richard had his own TV special and from there his career went from strength to strength. He became a regular turn on the popular ITV Variety show 'Live from...' His list of credits in show business goes on and on but most recently he has become a regular guest on Countdown and apparently keeps the studio audience entertained in the adverts with his comedy songs. It's very exciting to work with someone when you've grown up watching them on the television and when I got to meet him I wasn't disappointed. He's a charming, funny man and extremely talented. I learned a lot that night as Richard is a mine of information and quite honestly he's inspired me to take up playing the guitar again, which really isn't good news for my neighbours! www.richarddigance.com LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

A season of drama > Chichester Festival Theatre
C
hichester Festival Theatre’s Winter season 201617 offers a scintillating array of outstanding drama from the UK’s finest touring companies, to appeal to all tastes and ages. Edward Fox, Liza Goddard, Amanda Holden, Felicity Kendal, Robert Powell, Reece Shearsmith, Ken Stott and Imogen Stubbs are among the stars appearing in plays by writers from Alan Ayckbourn to Ronald Harwood. There’s also plenty of entertainment for families and youngsters from toddlers to teenagers, including Chichester Festival Youth Theatre’s Peter Pan for Christmas, and the hugely successful Running Wild which comes home to Chichester after a successful London run. Edward Fox stars in a new, oneman play Sand In The Sandwiches, celebrating the hugely loved poet John Betjeman. Written by Hugh Whitemore (Stevie, Breaking the Code) and directed by Gareth Armstrong, Sand In The Sandwiches travels from Betjeman’s boyhood to life as Britain’s Poet Laureate, presenting an entertaining insight into a man famous for his passions and sense of purpose as much as his unforgettable poetry. Minerva Theatre, 2 – 12 November Amanda Holden, Angela Griffin, TracyAnn Oberman, Tamzin Outhwaite and Nicola Stephenson in Stepping Out. Funny and heart

here are moments when, for every intellectually challenging or innovative piece of theatre you see a classic comedy is just the thing and Ayckbourn’s drama of misidentity is the answer. The plot is perhaps simplistic but it is his ability to identify the frailty of the human condition and deliver it in dialogue that seldom strays from the naturalistic that raises it above lesser work. Of course this is equally dependent on the quality of performance. Here we had a talented cast that made the evening seamlessly funny. Robert Powell never fails to deliver a convincing performance, from the dry and dark satire of Charles III to the light comedy of Ayckbourn he nails it. Lisa Goddard is joyous as the dippy and yet knowing housewife and is mistress of the wistful expression. This is Ayckbourn delivered with both style and skill by a cast that have the talent to milk every last twist and laugh from this simple farce. > Hastings Pier Weekender
F
ollowing a six year, £14.2m refurbishment, the iconic Hastings Pier reopened to the public in May. And rather brilliantly it's playing host to a top quality weekend of entertainment. Famously, the pier has played host to the likes of Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Clash, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Syd Barrett's last ever show with Pink Floyd in 1968. But storm damage in 1990 saw the pier slowly fall into disrepair before closing its doors in 2008. Further storm damage in 2010 almost spelt the end, but the Victorian era sub structure was deemed salvageable, and now it's back to playing host to some of the finest contemporary acts. Friday 16th September sees the UK's number one grime artist Dizzee Rascal headline. With four number one singles, four top ten albums, a Mercury Prize, a performance at the Olympic opening ceremony in 2012 and collaborations with both Calvin Harris and DJ Fresh under his belt, he'll be supported by KRSOne. The 17th will see the legendary Happy Mondays perform a 25th anniversary show for ‘Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches’ in its entirety, with support form The Orb, performing ‘Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld’, also for its 25th anniversary. The weekend is rounded off by The Levellers performing their ‘Levelling The Land’, also for its 25th anniversary. There’ll be support from Turin Brakes, who recently released their seventh album ‘Lost Property’, as well as folkpunk outfit Ferocious Dog. Hastings Pier, 1618 September

> Plunge down the rabbit hole with virtual reality from #TOMTech & Brighton Digital Festival
I
’ve had a few virtual reality experiences before that have been fun and intriguing: the sense of agency and immersion is striking and the possibilities are potentially thrilling. Brighton Digital Festival and #TOMTech’s VRLab will take over the whole of the Old Market with over 15 different experiences so we’ll be able to explore what the exciting new technology can offer us. ‘In The Eyes Of The Animal’ (pictured) for example is an animated film told from the viewpoints of the inhabitants of the forest, focusing on the life cycle of three different species. The work uses Oculus Rift, which is considered one of the best Headsets on the market, so it should be a high quality representation of VR if you are new to the form. The festival also features Pattern Recognition, which utilises a system of moving lights that can respond to the dancers it observes. The new work is a collaboration between choreographer Alexander Whitley and digital artist Memo Akten, and the duet includes a score from electronic composer Scanner and cellist Oliver Coates. The piece has been described as “a ravishing synthesis of light and movement” by the Financial Times so I’m looking forward to seeing some beguiling dance at an affordable rate. Check out the website below to find out more about the complete programme, which also includes SuperEverything (a live cinema performance project by The Light Surgeons on Sat 24 Sep) and Hacked On Classics (a celebration of classic '80s gadgets on Wed 28 Sep). VRLab & In The Eyes Of The Animal, 1618 September, £10/£15 Pattern Recognition, Fri 23 September, 7.30pm, £12.50 theoldmarket.com

N
o big surprise that our lush land and seascapes fire the creative souls of so many local artists. But we are constantly amazed by the variety of shapes and forms that transpire. Take sculptor Julie Snowball. She lives in Normans Bay with breathtaking views over the Weald, where the gentle undulating line of the South Downs meets the sea at Beachy Head. For more than 25 years Julie has experimented with clay, and her current fascination is figurative in the form of blue angels and nomadic ladies. These are handcoiled and textured, inspired by the uninterrupted skyline and the rolling South Downs. The angels are sprayed with a blue glaze to emphasise the heavenly blue skies, while the nomadic ladies are inspired by Gustav Klimt. You’ll find Julie’s work at Chalk Gallery, Lewes. www.artymagazines.com LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

THURSDAY 15 Careless Killings?: Tonight ITV1, 7.30pm Aasmah Mir investigates whether the number of violent crimes hitting our headlines involving people with mental illness is a reflection of how the system is letting down those in need. Can it no longer cope – or care – as services are cut and those in need are left more isolated and unsupported?
Gypsy Kids: Our Secret World Channel Five, 9pm How do you turn a survival skill into a possible profession? Just ask 12-year-old Royston, an English Traveller who turned standing up against a bully at school into something that has left him a multi-title boxing champion on course to turn pro. As well as laying patio with his Dad.
Bitten Syfy, 9pm Pack politics are tricky. Just look at any dog-walker’s struggles. Add to that the nifty trick of being human most of the time too and what you get is the Council of Alphas telling Jeremy that unless he kills Malcolm within a week he could lose the leadership of his own group. And you thought Westminster was brutal!

SATURDAY 17 All Together Now: The Great Orchestra Challenge BBC2, 8pm Tonight is music night, and if you’re not an X Factor fan this search for Britain’s best amateur orchestra might be right up your street. It is the grand final and a chance to perform at the Proms is at stake. Kate Derham hosts proceedings, with mentor Chi-chi Nwanoku cheering everyone on.
The X Factor ITV1, 8pm It’s boot camp! Good thing Dermot has a fully soggycompatible shoulder on hand (two, in fact) as emotions run high and everybody really REALLY wants to make it through. Will Simon, Sharon, Louis and Nicole grit their teeth and the numbers narrow down – or are the winners clear from the off?
FILM: The Mummy ITV2, 6.35pm Classic action adventure with bombastic effects, mind-boggling stunts, and a respect for historical accuracy probably akin to that of Lara Croft’s. All good fun though, as Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz accidentally unearth a long hidden Mummy who’s more than a smidge cross with them.
