DOGGY TALES > Bear’s visit to Bone Idol Brighton Samantha Harman
M
y incredibly hairy hound Bear, also known as 'Mr Fluffypants', was in desperate need of a haircut. After careful consideration, I selected Bone Idol Brighton, (formerly Doggy fashion), located on St James Street. The new look is impressive, having recently been refurbished, the shop now boasts a clean, bright interior and is stacked to the brim with high quality pet paraphernalia. We immediately liked our designated dog groomer Ben, who has an impressive nine years’ experience under his belt. He proffered a dog biscuit, (not to me obviously!) then spent a good ten minutes getting to know Bear and discovering what look I wanted to achieve... At only seven months old, this was Bear’s first 'big boy' haircut, so I was slightly anxious of the outcome, as I had become accustomed to my furry ball of fun. The visit was prompted out of necessity rather than vanity, he couldn't see from beneath his unruly fringe and had several dubious tangles in delicate areas. We decided on a not 'too groomed' look and then Ben gave me a tour. The grooming area is visible through a big glass window, which I liked. Ben explained that the grooming tables are hydraulic: this means that they can be lowered and raised, in order to safely accommodate any height or weight. The baths have antislip steps for easy, safe access. I was surprised by the vast array of shampoos and conditioners on display, as I’d wrongly assumed that one size would fit all. In fact the products are tailored to each dog and have yummy names such as ‘avocado and cucumber’ (for matted fur) and ‘oatmeal and honey’ (for sensitive skin). Ben informed me that Bear would be washed with ‘blue pearl’, which is specially formulated for dogs with white coats to give immense shine. Feeling certain that Bear was in super safe hands, I left him for one hour and 45 minutes. When I returned I was delighted with the transformation, he looks like a different dog – a tidier, sleeker and cuter (if that’s even possible) version of his former scruffy self. Before leaving I bought a new ‘cosy dogs’ harness, which is padded in order to prevent rubbing on his skin. Bear and I were both incredibly happy with the experience; it’s obvious that all the staff at Bone Idol are not only highly trained, but also true animal lovers which made all the difference. I think we may have found our forever dog groomer in the lovely Ben too!

T
here's a name of a person that I regularly see about the streets of Brighton. However this person isn’t doing a show or appearance, he is commemorated for being a famous resident of the city. I often see Max Miller’s statue in the Pavilion Gardens, or the blue plaques on the houses where he lived. There's also the Max Miller walk. But I knew nothing about him, so I thought it was time to learn...
“ He never swore and disapproved of comedians who did ” Max Miller, who was a regarded as the greatest stand up comedian of his generation was born Thomas Henry Sargent, in Hereford Street, in Kemp Town in 1894. It wasn't until he married his wife Katherine Marsh that he changed his name to Max Miller, which was Katherine's idea. For a while they were a double act. The Cheeky Chappie was another name Max was known by. He was renowned for telling risqué jokes and innuendos. Much of his material was too blue for broadcasting yet he never swore and didn't approve of comedians who did. Max Miller made films, toured in revues, music halls and sang. He was known for his flamboyant suits, plus fours, kipper ties and trilby hat. He preferred to be booked in theatres in London or the South so that he could return to his beloved Brighton on the last train home. The last train to Brighton used to carry a number of theatricals on their way home, among them were Sir Laurence Olivier, Dora Bryan, Alan Melville and the Crazy Gang. I often get the last train back to Brighton after doing shows, believe me there's no such glamour on them now! 6 | LATEST 7
his week, a video popped up on my Facebook that someone else had liked, and I haven't really been able to stop worrying about it since. It was a boy who could not have been much older than 13, doing cringey lip syncing and pouting to a camera. Now this clearly isn't aimed at me, but should we really indulge such exposing behaviour like this? In terms of things kids do on the internet that they'll later regret, this is fairly lighthearted small fry, but serious stuff happens out there as a result of children being encouraged to express themselves at all costs via their computers. I'm just about young enough to have naïvely made the odd angry comment or tweet during my teens that I'd be mortified to associate myself with now, but these days it's a different ball game. Educational steps are being taken to tackle the really grizzly stuff, but is it made clear enough that any embarrassing video of you gurning to a Drake song with your top off will be there forever unless you can remember your YouTube password from when you were 12? If not, the 2020s will surely be forever known as "The awkward job interviews decade".

A ROOM WITH A VIEW > A sumptuous new production of A Room with a View, adapted from the E.M. Forster novel, will visit Theatre Royal Brighton in October
T
he play marks the welcome return to Brighton of Felicity Kendal, who last visited Theatre Royal Brighton in 2014 in Hay Fever, which went on to enjoy a successful West End run. Felicity plays Charlotte Bartlett, the prim spinster cousin touring Italy as chaperone to the English rose Lucy Honeychurch. Charlotte is quick to step in when Lucy makes the mistake of fraternising with the lower class Mr Emerson and his son George at their Florentine pensione. However, when she witnesses Lucy and George actually kissing, she has no option but to whisk Lucy away to Rome. Back home at the family’s Surrey estate, Lucy becomes engaged to the eminently suitable but pretentious Cecil Vyse. Charlotte has sworn Lucy to secrecy over the kiss with George, but will Lucy be able to repress her feelings when she discovers that the Emersons have taken a house in the village? With its cast of vivid characters, this elegant comedy written in 1908 is widely recognised as one of the finest novels of the twentieth century. The award winning Merchant Ivory film adaptation in 1985 was voted number nine in The Guardian’s list of the best romantic films of all time. The production is directed by Adrian Noble. The recipient of more than 20 Olivier Award nominations, Adrian was the Artistic Director of the RSC from 19902003. He recently directed Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and The Tempest for Theatre Royal Bath Productions and The Importance of Being Earnest which starred David Suchet. A wonderful treat for an autumn evening, do not miss the chance to see one of our most loved actresses in this sparkling comedy.

ANGELA BARNES > The highly acclaimed and rather brilliant comic Angela Barnes takes a break from radio and television success for the annual Big Cheer For Amaze. Victoria Nangle finds out more Hello Angela! How lovely to see you playing at Big Cheer For Amaze. Do you feel a connection with the Amaze charity? Hi there! I really do feel a connection with Amaze. I think this might be the 4th Big Cheer I've done. The work they do is incredibly important, giving support and advice to families and carers of disabled children. It can be so easy for people to feel isolated, so Amaze provides networks and advice which are invaluable. And the comedy nights are so much fun, always. I can't wait! You have a well known connection with Brighton, having lived here in the past. What do you miss most about the place? Oh where to begin?! Even when I'm not living there, Brighton feels like home. I miss the whole Brightonian lifestyle, there is a place for

everyone in Brighton, you can't not fit in. All of life is there. It's the best place for people watching, it's like street theatre. on the way, oh the pubs, so many pubs, the Pavilion Gardens, Red Roaster coffee, Snooper's Paradise, Tuaca. Wait, no, not Tuaca, No way. Oh God, am having Tuaca flashbacks... And do you have a favourite story about living here? Oh so many... Anyone that has lived in Brighton has a seagull story, tales of having our lunch taken by the evil small dog sized monsters. But one day, I was queuing at a cashpoint in Hove. There was a man standing in front of me, suddenly he got dive bombed, and the seagull took his wallet. His WALLET. It flew up the street a bit, realised it wasn't food and dropped it. Either it was a really stupid seagull, or had been trained by Fagin. I really enjoyed your recent BBC Radio 4 series, You Can’t Take It With You. Any irons in fires to do another series of it or any other work with BBC Radio 4? Am at the "wait and see" stage at the moment. I would love to do another series of `You Can't Take It With You’, and I have lots of other ideas of things I would like to do for radio, so fingers crossed. I will be doing ‘News Quiz’ in a couple of weeks, which is something that I LOVE. You’ve made no secret of your appreciation of BBC Radio 4 over the years. the like what details most surprised you when you got to see it all? It feels very strange that I'm allowed to do things in Radio Comedy. I was such a fan for so long, that when I do something for Radio 4, I still feel like the work experience girl, being allowed to have a go. The surprises I've had are pleasant ones. It's amazing to see how much graft and joy goes into making a programme for Radio 4. People are there for their love of comedy and everybody wants to put out the best show that they can. I'm amazed by the sheer volume of talent of writers and performers and producers and am beyond chuffed to do my little bit every now and then. Many moons ago you used to run gigs in Brighton. Who would be on your dream standup bill with you alive or dead and what would the running order be? Oh gawd. I know that for days after answering this, I am going to think of people I should have added to the list! OK. MC: Mark Olver. I never worry about a gig when Mark is hosting. I've seen him wrangle any crowd into a receptive audience, from the most apathetic to the most rowdy. There is nobody else I want to helm my gig! Amy Poehler and Tina Fey (I want them to open my night like they open the Golden Globes. Oh God I love them so hard) Linda Smith (My love for her work is no secret, again, so sadly missed)
Interval John Kearns (Something so different, and the pathos his character brings is beautiful, and so, so funny) Nick Helm (Has been one of my favourite acts to watch for years, since the Funny Farm [Angela’s Hovebased own comedy night from the Noughties] days) Interval Sara Pascoe (One of the most exciting comedians around at the moment) Victoria Wood (she was the first comedian I ever saw live when I was 14, and I was hooked. Terribly missed and what a way to close the show) Who is the best underthe radar comic on the circuit now, according to Barnesy? Oh my. Without a doubt it is Michael Fabbri. I cannot fathom why he's not super famous, makes me belly laugh on and off stage. I love how his mind works, he has such a different angle on the world. He's also based in Brighton, people should definitely check him out.
footsteps of the great Julie Walters, that's a bit too much pressure. You’ve won a million squidoodles (aka pounds) – what do you do with it? First thing, I would buy a house in Brighton, in a heartbeat. And a Fiat 500 (I bloody love them, but had to buy a sensible car because my job means I drive 10,000 miles in 3 months). I guess these days, that wouldn't leave much change out of a million, scary! I feel I should say that I would give a chunk to charity. I mean, I would, but saying that in an interview makes it sound like I'm just saying it. But I would, honest! What do you think are the ingredients to constructing the perfect gag? If I knew the answer to that, I would be the most famous comedian on the planet. My
rules are: 1) make sure you can stand by your gag, if you are going to say something contentious, you'd better be sure about where you stand 2) People want to see what your opinion is, they want to get to know a bit about you from your jokes, so make sure they can. I know you love to swim, but will you be swimming in the sea when you come down to play Big Cheer For Amaze? In October?! Brrrr. I know there are people that do it all year round, maybe I will bite the bullet and get in there. Maybe I will if someone makes a big enough pledge for Amaze! Big Cheer For Amaze, Thursday 6 October, Komedia, 8pm, £17.50, www.komedia.co.uk/brighton, amazebrighton.org.uk
If you could be in a BBC dramatisation of your favourite book, what would it be, who would you play and why? I love Sue Townsend. Adrian Mole was my constant companion growing up. I never tire of those stories, and because they are set in the ‘80s, there is such nostalgia for my childhood there. I would love to play Pauline Mole, Adrian's Mum. She was such a great character, a feminist, and bloody funny. But it would mean following in the

t’s hot! Which is glorious when you can pop into the sea for a bob around and then sit in the sun for an hour and know you’ll be dry enough of sea water to catch the bus home without arousing suspicious glances of eccentricity. But it does raise other changes to my usual routine that, to be honest, I hadn’t given much thought to since my teenage years when my parents were on different continents and it was time for my brother and I to travel Far East for visiting time. Since I don’t have air conditioning in my flat, I’ve been forced to tap into my creative mind for solutions. This is not always a good idea, but I felt it was worth the gamble. I have laundered my bed sheets and hung them up – till damp – over my bedroom door on order to try and chill the air going past. All the windows in my flat are open, only sometimes closing the bedroom ones at the front in deference to the pub across the road and the dustbin men. And I have a hot water bottle filled with water residing at the bottom of my freezer to be put on a towel at the bottom of my bed, in case of a real ‘can’tsleep’ emergency. The thing is, I’m reasonably fit, most of the time. But the heat makes us all more prone to viruses that prosper and lurk – yes, they can do both – in the heat. And yes, I got ill. Which made me think of those who are already vulnerable. The elderly and the small, the fourlegged and... well, everyone that isn’t me. I’ve been going ‘round telling people to drink more water, slap on the sun lotion so they don’t turn into ‘London lobsters’, and sharing Facebook memes warning about hot pavement damage on delicate paw pads. So have a splash, douse yourself in the sea. And see what your heatmangled imagination comes up with to stay cool too.

I
'm going away for a few days, well two nights and two and a half days to be precise. It's a short trip to an amazing food festival in Belgium and no, it will not all be moules et frites, far from it. This promises to be a gastronomic delight. But what does one take in terms of baggage? I am always amazed when traveling with friends how little they manage to carry. There they are with some tiny bag slung over their shoulder and there I am dragging a small wheelie cabin case along. How? Okay, I know that as a man of a "certain" size my clothing requirements are perhaps taking up more space than a person of smaller stature, but surely not that much space. Perhaps they are the kind of people who think it is a good idea to rinse their clothes through at bedtime and dry them overnight? Well I'm sorry but I'm not doing that, nor before you suggest it am I going to go "commando”, no, not me! A consequence of my dilemma is that I have gathered around me a large number of luggage options, from a small day bag to a larger day bag, a one night bag, a two night bag, a one week suitcase and a two week suitcase. Yes it could probably be categorized as some kind of disorder I know. I also only like good quality luggage. When I was younger I realised that cheap luggage explodes very easily, especially when you overfill it, and let's face it, we can all be guilty of that. There's only one thing more embarrassing than seeing your worldly goods scattered across the baggage reclaim when you arrive at your holiday destination and that is seeing your worldly goods scattered across the baggage reclaim when you return home and they are all ready for the wash. So for two days; two tee shirts, two shirts, three pairs of socks, same for underwear, a pair of jeans and a second pair of shoes. It doesn't seem like much or am I being mad? I think not, just clean, and tidy, and weighed down once again.

However, getting an insight into next season’s trends can help you save money in the long run if you want to remain in vogue but on a budget. These trend predictions will help you be savvy in the sales and decide what to pass on or hang onto from your existing wardrobe… Casual Glam The luxe sporty look is set to continue with panels of mesh, metallic and bold colours such as cobalt blue and orange flashing through on side panels and from underneath. This goes for footwear too. Next season however, the sporty influence isn’t limited to athletic clothing styles, it peeps through on everyday dresses and glamorous evening wear too. Print Print is going to be in full force come springtime 2017. Animals we all commonly love, such as cats, horses, birds and dogs will emblazon our clothing for a fun twist with the likes of Topshop already showing some designs. Look out for these right now and in the sales in January. As well as animals, tribal prints, Aztec and tropical jungle themes will be popular, particularly leaf prints. Colours Burnt oranges, golden, yolky yellows and vibrant yet moody blues, turquoise and violet will be the order of the day which makes a refreshing change from the usual pastels. BOWIE AT HIS BEST > Lazarus comes to the UK
W
hen news broke that David Bowie had died it was met by almost universal disbelief. How could it be possible that perhaps the most innovative, exciting and experimental pop artist of the last century and this one was dead. Bowie's career had always trodden a dangerous and edgy path. As an artist he was never scared of seeking new ways of expressing his creativity. Some met with critical acclaim, some fell on stony ground, but he was never daunted by this and until the end he was as adventurous and dangerous as ever. His final album was Blackstar, a dark and stark work attached to his final stage project Lazarus, which opened in New York to acclaim. Now, ahead of its hugely anticipated European premiere in a brand new venue at Kings Cross Theatre, London, full casting for David Bowie and Enda Walsh’s Lazarus has been announced. Gabrielle Brooks, Sydnie Christmas, Richard Hansell, Amy Lennox, Maimuna Memon, Jamie Muscato, Tom Parsons and Julie Yammanee will be joining previously announced cast members Michael C Hall, Michael Esper and Sophia Anne Caruso, who are reprising their roles from the original New York Theatre Workshop production. Lazarus broke box office records when it
played a strictly limited, sold out run in New York from 18 November 2015 to 20 January 2016. Tickets for the London production are on sale now, with preview performances beginning on Tuesday 25 October and an official opening night on Tuesday 8 November. Lazarus is booking until Sunday 22 January 2017. Inspired by the book, The Man Who Fell To Earth, Lazarus focuses on Thomas Newton as he remains still on Earth a 'man' unable to die, his head soaked in cheap gin and haunted by a past love. We follow Newton during the course of a few days where the arrival of another lost soul might set him finally free. Michael C Hall stars as Newton, the character famously portrayed by David Bowie in the 1976 screen adaptation directed by Nicolas Roeg. Directed by Ivo van Hove, Lazarus includes songs from Bowie’s iconic catalogue as well as brand new music written for the stage. The Lazarus Cast Album will be released on 21 October and features performances by the original NYTW company as well as three of Bowie’s final studio recordings. 25 October 2016 – 22 January 2017 Tuesday to Saturday at 8pm Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday matinees at 3pm Kings Cross Theatre, Kings Boulevard, London, N1C 4BU

he Doric String Quartet tapped into something truly beautiful in the opening concert of Strings Attached’s 16/17 season. The night opened with Bartók: the quartet imbuing warmth and light into the dark but glorious tumult of his String Quartet No 4. Debussy’s String Quartet No 1 featured a striking and spirited attack in the first movement and the quartet brought the sheer lyricism of the piece to life in an enlivening performance. Cellist John Myerscough enthusiastically discussed their decision to perform Haydn last, explaining that the “king of the string quartet” should not be considered merely a pleasant opener but rather get the attention and framing he deserves. The exciting piece was vigorously played, a perfect ending to an inspired programme that showcased the diverse musical and emotional range of the string quartet form. hought you’d seen the back of them? Thought they were dead? Not yet! In what suspiciously looks like a tradition, the band’s second End of Summer Party gig takes place this week, an event that is being filmed and recorded for possible future release. Earlier this year they released their first new material for seven years, in the shape of the ‘This Is A Serious Party’ EP, which featured ‘Fall From Grace’, ‘Itchy Feet’, ‘Money’ and their bouncy ska flavoured cover of the Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’. One of the very best live bands around, this quintessential Brighton band formed in late 2002, playing their debut gig at The Prince Albert (where they got there name from; Los Albertos. Get it?), quickly becoming a festival friendly band; their mix of ska, dub, funk, klezmer, swing jazz and rock always getting the party started. The six piece band feature five singers, a brass section and the most metronomic drummer you’re likely to ever hear. Tight, funny, crazy, loud, Los Albertos also happen to write memorable songs that work brilliantly on the dancefloor. Three albums later they called it a day in 2012, but reformed in 2014 with the idea of doing select gigs and releasing new material. Support comes in the form of Ratbag, the accordiondriven skapunk five piece, who have also just released an EP, Rentokil, recorded at The Levellers’ Metway Studios. And DJ Boll***s is on the decks. > Verdi’s Nabucco and Aida at Theatre Royal Brighton: a great chance to give opera a go
I
t gives me real pleasure to preview Ellen Kent’s touring opera at the Theatre Royal because she was responsible for some of my early forays into the art form. Kent’s productions tour extensively, and impressively, with lavish sets and the occasional live animal thrown in for good measure. The price might be significantly cheaper than most opera tickets but the shows are still of a startlingly high quality. Next week you can pick between two Verdi offerings or treat yourself to both. Verdi is a bright and bold composer with memorable tunes and technicolour emotional sweeps so any newcomer to opera would have a fine starting point here. First up is Nabucco, with Kent presenting a new production of the very first opera she produced. The powerful tale of the Hebrews’ exile by Babylonian king Nabucco will feature some elaborate staging and something burning down (no spoilers here) so you can expect an exciting spectacle. Aida is considered the grandest of all Ellen Kent’s operas and will feature a new set built by SetUp Scenery, who also build sets for the Royal Opera House. The opera contains famous arias (moving solo singer bits) such as ‘Celeste Aida’ and ‘Ritorna Vincitor’ that you can stream on YouTube to try out Verdi’s bombastic style. Both productions are sung in Italian with English surtitles so you can comfortably follow the plot. I think that some are often too quick to assume that everyone already knows what happens in opera storylines. Folly! Countless people don’t know what happens and should feel welcome to experience the opera as its creator intended. Try it out and enjoy the ride. Now in its sixth year, this fundraiser for local charity Amaze has become a calendarmarker as the charity’s close relationship with Baby Cow Productions has brought in some of the best names in comedy to support the event. And this year is no exception. Already filling the bill you’ll find the brilliant Angela Barnes (interview on p10), joined by Joe Lycett – hot from Edinburgh Festival accolades and his various and many television appearances, as well as the remarkable and repeatedly receiver of fivestar reviews Adam Riches. SATURDAY 1 Strictly Come Dancing BBC1, 6.20pm There’s something compellingly soporific yet emotionally engaging about watching these celebrities so invested – some of them soar and some of them have two left feet, and both of them have bunions. Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman host while the judges offer pantomime scathing and support.
The X Factor ITV1, 8pm It’s judges’ houses time, where those that survived the six-chair challenge head off to sumptuous locations and we pretend it’s where the judges live all the time. Maybe it is... Plus, the nominated Wildcard acts are added into the mix too. Each judge has a little help from a famous friend or two for the hard choices.
FILM: Zombeavers Syfy, 11.10pm There’s an art in pushing a genre’s envelope so far it falls off the edge of the desk. Behold – Zombeavers! Sorority sisters, frat boys, a cabin in the woods next to a lake – and bloodthirsty varmints terrorising them. Who wants to bet they get killed off in order of bad behaviour?
