DOGGY TALES > And they call it Staffy love...

S

taffordshire Bull Terriers, have an undeserved, but understandable bad reputation. This is mainly due to irresponsible ownership. People often acquire Staffies as ‘status symbols’, as their strong jaws and muscular bodies make them excellent guard dogs. However, in the wrong hands they can become incredibly aggressive. This reputation has generated a lot of negative press over the years and consequently people are now wary or even frightened of Staffs. In actual fact they are very loving, sensitive animals who make great family pets. This week meet Kerrie Knowles, who will testify to this. “Like most people I'll hold my hands up and admit I too had reservations about owning a Stafford, but that instantly evaporated the moment I saw my first bitch and fell in love at first sight. “Everything they are portrayed to be couldn't be any further from the truth. I've been a Stafford mum five times over and every one of them has proven to be some of my best friends. Life has thrown me some hard curve balls at times, but I can honestly say if wasn't for the loyalty, love, companionship and endless kisses that wiped away any tears, I wouldn't be the

THE HAIR DOCTOR > Joe Fuller gets shaved and shorn by expert barber/engineer Hossein in the stunning 1920s Chicagostyle surroundings of Cutter & Grinder

T

hey call him the hair doctor. Hossein is selfeffacing about the moniker but it's certainly an apposite title. The Cutter & Grinder proprietor has been a professional barber for over 25 years and has also trained as an engineer. He skilfully blends his experience in engineering and barbering to sculpt well designed haircuts that last. After confidently dissecting my hair, Hossein felt that it might look better falling a different way, and politely pondered about the curious way other barbers had cut my crown. I'll admit that I was initially wary: I'd gotten used to my mini quiff falling to the right but I'm always up for letting barbers do things their own way and trusting their judgement. I wasn't disappointed. When Hossein and I were chatting about my hair I told him that my hair grew quickly. He replied that: “Everyone says that but no hair grows quickly. The important thing is connection and movement, if the haircut isn't connected properly then it can mushroom out and people can think that it then grows quickly in particular places. Some barbers leave everything behind and there is no science behind the cut. It's about precision and hair keeping its shape.” I can happily report that my hair has indeed kept its shape over the last few weeks. Previous haircuts had infused a separating line that I could never seem to conjure up again in my morning rush. Hossein's cut is far easier to maintain, and has resulted in a more stylish, cleaner and defined swoosh than the jumble I had before. I had never had a barber's wet shave before so was curious and excited about the process. Hossein told me that the joy is gone from shaving and that it “used to be more fun”, so he

wants to show people how enjoyable a proper shave can be. A warm towel was applied which was a welcoming sensation, and I even got a head massage which felt therapeutic and fun in and of itself. The products were all pleasant concoctions, including pre shave oil and preshave cream mixed together to relax the skin. It was mushed together and then applied with one of those authentic wavy shaving brushes. The whole process felt 6 | LATEST 7

nice and warm, and the brush was caringly applied: a clear step up from the cold indifference of my disposable razor. This could definitely be considered the male equivalent of a spa day or beauty treatment: my face has honestly never felt so fresh and fragrant. I felt invigorated and alert so it would be perfect before a job interview, date, party or even just a normal day’s work. Stubble was slower to return than after my typical shaving shambles and my girlfriend appreciated my smoother jaw. Hossein told me that he could have cut closer in fact but that he took it easy since it was my first time: exemplifying naturally good customer service and consideration for his punters. Hossein ran Cutter and Grinder by himself for its first three years of business but now has a full time assistant in Matt. He took some time finding the right apprentice, chagrined by the gungho roustabouts thinking that they could cut hair after a few weeks of training. Matt has taken his time however and put the work in: “He's never sat down in six months, he's always standing up and watching. In six months I've brought him up to a level where people are actually coming for him. That's what happens when you're patient and learn a trade properly.” You can therefore be confident about getting a great haircut from either gentleman.

“ It’s about precision and hair keeping its shape ” I can wholeheartedly recommend going to Cutter & Grinder for a haircut and/or wet shave for an enjoyable, exceptionally high quality service from an experienced barber. The luxurious interior (restored and refitted by Hossein himself and sourced from a 1920's Chicago barbershop) is worth a visit in its own right. Men are looking more stylish and swish again, and Cutter & Grinder is the perfect place to get your tonsorial act together. > 15 seconds of fame...

I

f you watched the TV show Food Unwrapped 'The Truth About Sugar' on Channel 4 the other day, then you might have seen some familiar Brighton faces! Comedians Dave Thompson, Matt Whistler (who I've written about in my column previously) and myself made a very brief appearance in the episode. During the filming we got to try all sort of surgery treats, which was lovely! I'm sure my dentist won't be too happy with me though!

“ We got to try all sorts of sugary treats, which was lovely! ” If you missed the programme then you can watch it on catch up and see our 15 seconds of fame! Also this week I was the MC at the Komedia for The Funny Women show. Funny Women is the UK's leading female comedy community and has been going for 14 years. They run comedy courses, competitions, conferences and of course shows. The show I hosted was sold out, it was hardly surprising, as there was an amazing line up of very funny women. Comedy duo Shelf, Cressida Wetton, Roz Ryan, Kelly Convey, Sooz Kempner, headlined by Suzy Bennett. All of which were fantastically funny. I was so lucky to work with these fabulously talented ladies and I hope I get to work with them again. It was such a great night to be involved with as the evening was also raising money for RISE, the Domestic Violence charity. If you've always fancied yourself as a comedian, Funny Women offer a range of workshops and master classes that aim to get more women into comedy or using comedy to improve their confidence. > A fine day out

A

s the seasons are turning, autumn keeps dropping chilly days on us mixed in with the last of the blazing sunny offerings. With this in mind it’s with a real delight that I joined a group of friends in bundling into a car and heading down the coast for the day. To be honest, when I took the bus ride along to Eastbourne in May I was captivated by the fields of cows and sheep and fascinatinglyshaped trees I need to try and climb. It’s so near and time just needs to be made for it! Anyway, we rocked up at the Birling Gap National Trust car park and I fell in tranquil love. It’s just beautiful. It was lunchtime and we strode down to the beach with packed lunches, a guitar and no concept of when the tide was due in. It was due in then. Yeah, nothing says finding rock pools like seeing them hidden by rolling waves. Luckily we were there for the duration – or at least until the sun set – so they soon popped up again and I was gazing hypnotized at seaweed and shells in no time at all. The cliff is so crumbly there’s a metal kind of pier out into the air, where it meets a middleofthebeach stairwell we quickly descended and set up camp at the bottom of. At the top there’s a National Trust cafe – which was fab for fetching tea from, as the wind was really cutting in. For once I was grateful for my ‘Grangle’ (GrannyNangle is always prepared) proclivities and the number of layers to wear I brought. Gotta love a massive poncho in Autumn. As we left the sun had mostly disappeared and a couple of our number stripped off and ran laughing into the sea as the rain started to drizzle. What a metaphor for the changing seasons. Welcome you falling leaves. Love you.

> Pollyanna

R

ight now, this minute, as we talk… well things are a bit glum. PostBrexit, which I thought was a breakfast cereal, mid Clinton V Trump and filled with the news that with Corbyn at the head of Labour we never see another Labour government for 20 years, things seem pretty grim. How the media loves to pump up that gloom and doom, even filling our heads with stories of how, for as little as £150,000, we could be the first to colonise Mars and save humanity. What is there then to look forward to? Well plenty I reckon. Okay the world is getting warmer, people want to crack the Earth's mantle here in Sussex to obtain natural gas and the prospect of Trump winning is almost too unbearable to even contemplate, but on the bright side… No, I'm not struggling to find the bright side, there's plenty going on that still puts a smile on my face, heartwarming stuff. I'm no sports lover but I could see how the Olympics made a lot of people very proud and very happy. Going higher/faster/closer does nothing for me, but seeing the pleasure it brings to others does. I can smile at how lucky I am to enjoy good food, simple or fine, it can all put a grin on my face. I can enjoy a good concert or a play and there is something heartening about a good book too. Even sitting here writing is a pleasure and seldom a chore. Okay, I know that all these things can seem like life's luxuries but is that true, or are we becoming too cynical to enjoy simple pleasures or is it that people now take pleasure from moaning and being down hearted. A colleague once described me as being Pollyanna. Well If I am then I embrace my inner Pollyanna and hope that it reflects well on my approach to life. I'm not perfect, far far from it, and if I do moan from time to time then accept my apologies, we all need to let off steam, but for goodness sake, put a smile on it from time to time.

Brett Dubois, Yan Pothin, Mayor Cllr Pete West & Former Mayor Cllr Denise Cobb

THE RIGHT TIME > Clock Tower key returns to city after 129 years

A

key to the clock tower that was presented to the town of Brighton in 1887 has travelled all the way across the world to be returned to the city 129 years later. Brett Dubois, the great great grandson of Alderman Edward Martin, the Mayor of Brighton in 1887, came over from Australia to present the key back to Brighton & Hove.

“ It was then passed down from

generation to generation of Alderman Martin’s family ”

Brett said: “The key should go back to the city of Brighton & Hove so other people can see it and learn about this piece of history.” This is not the first time that the key has made the journey from Australia to Brighton as Brett brought it in 2013 and his grandparents came with it in 1962. However, this time it will stay with the city. Mayor Cllr Pete West said: “It was great to meet Yan and Brett; their key unlocks a significant part of the city’s history and we are pleased to be its custodian once more. Former Mayor Cllr Denise Cobb and I were delighted to welcome it home.”

James Willing, who gifted the clock tower to the city, gave the key to Alderman Martin and the town of Brighton. It was then passed down from generation to generation of Alderman Martin’s family, finally ending up with Brett. Brett and his partner, Yan Pothin, stopped by the mayor’s office where they returned the key to Mayor Pete West and visited the clock tower. 12 | LATEST 7

> Getting crabby

S

ince giving up running a car, a decision I seldom regret, I have been less inclined to travel too far to eat. That of course does not include my forays to the continent. Last week I made a foray to Worthing. I love Worthing and for many years one of my favourite restaurants was there, a smashing place called Trenchers with a very good chef. So I was delighted when Mr and Mrs M told me about The Crabshack and even more delighted when they suggested that they collect me one evening and drive me over there. Of course I said yes. The restaurant is right on the seafront left of their Steine and from the outside looks both warm and inviting. The front terrace looks good too but sadly it was a chill evening so we went inside and when I saw that it was an open kitchen I was glad that we had as I love to watch the team at work. Whilst Mr M parked the car, Mrs M and I had a drink, a glass of white for her and a Blackdown G&T for me, both very good. The menu is short, pleasingly so and understandably features quite a few crab dishes. Excellent I thought, pushing aside that crab is one of the things that makes my gout flare up. To hell with that though as crab is also one of my favourite things to eat. From a short list of starters we decided to share the salt and pepper squid, the piri piri prawns and the popcorn cockles. The squid was first class, incredibly tender and perfectly spiced. It was generous too, more than enough for us all to have plenty. The prawns arrive in near volcanically hot spicy oil with a hunk of bread to mop it up. The prawns themselves were good, the texture taut rather than tough which is always better than mushy. Finally to the cockles, how I love cockles and these I have to say were delicious, fried in a crisp coating LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

and more than plentiful, even I could not finish the portion, hard as I might try. I will certainly be back for another paper cone of these beauties. When it came to main courses we were singularly unadventurous and all chose the dressed crab. Why, because we could! Any problem with that see me after class. The crab came with brown bread, butter and a mountain of frites, yes, frites, nice thin crispy fried potatoes in the Belgian style with of course some extra mayonnaise to dip into. If I said that this was a generous portion I would be understating the case. The crab itself is served in what I would describe as partly undressed. A fully dressed crab has all the meat removed and then place back in the shell. Here the dark meat and white meat from the main shell have been put back but the claws are served on the side, cracked and ready for you to plunder the set white meat inside. I liked this a lot. I love the dark meat eaten on thickly buttered bread to start and then the fun of picking at the claws to follow. It's not a dish for people who don't want to get their hands messy but the mess is well worth the prize. Once again I was beaten by the scale of the bread and butter and the frites, we all were, but we all thoroughly enjoyed the whole meal. We declined the offer of a very indulgent sounding dessert but had coffees before heading back to Brighton – very happy indeed. REVIEW

STAGE BRASSED OFF > Music and drama at The Hawth

B

rass bands may not be the most fashionable musical form but they have a great following, a following that was certainly boosted back in 1996 when the film Brassed Off was released. This poignant comedydrama film written and directed by Mark Herman and starring Pete Postlethwaite, Tara Fitzgerald and Ewan McGregor struck a note for those of us who lived through the Thatcher years and saw the gradual shut down of the British coal mining industry and the devastating effect that it had on coal mining communities across the country. There was comedy yes, but the message went far beyond a few northern stereotypical gags, far more than whippets and flat caps! Now, after a successful run in East Grinstead, Chequer Mead Productions presents a special one off performance of Brassed Off to coincide with The Hawth's new Brass Season for 2016/17. It's 1994 and the miners are striking as the local colliery faces closure. Danny's dreams of leading the pit's band to victory at a national competition at the Albert Hall seem remote as the men choose between picket lines and redundancy packages. But when Flugelhornplaying Gloria returns to her

hometown, the band get their oompah back and romance is rekindled with her childhood sweetheart Andy. However, when the real reason for Gloria's return is revealed and the pressures of the strike get too much for the band members, things start to fall out of tune... Featuring The Horsham Borough Brass Band live on stage, this is a unique show and one not to be missed. Wednesday 19 October, 7.30pm, The Hawth Crawley The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 and online at www.hawth.co.uk. This is an amateur production. Desford Colliery Band kick off the new 2016/17 Brass Season on Sunday 2 October 3pm with a concert guaranteed to delight its many fans. The season will also feature Grimethorpe Band (30 October), Fairey Band (20 November), Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band (22 January), Virtuosi GUS Band (26 February) and Black Dyke Band (19 March). Tickets: £12.75 (discounts: £11.25). Book 3 concerts for £10.25 each, 4 concerts for £9.75 each, 5 concerts for £9.25 each, all six concerts £8.75 each. I

t's the last tour with this configuration of the group, which has been seven years standing now”, says Swans frontman Michael Gira. “After this tour, which goes through to December of next year I'm going to revert to my old ways, which is gathering people on a casebycase basis for each record and tour. And, I'll be touring a lot less, and it wont be a set band as it is now. So, it's not the final Swans band, but it it is the final Swans tour with this particular gathering of humans." Swans are not for the fainthearted. Notorious for the extremely loud gigs, they perversely make music that is trancelike and meditative. We're not talking hardcore thrash or death metal here, but music that is transcending and quite beautiful at times. "There's a corollary to a minimalist composer whose work I love by the name of Charlemagne Palestine. He did a piece called ‘Strumming Music’ and that's him sitting between two grand pianos, playing one with his left hand, one with right hand, and he's playing arpeggios and gradually he develops those arpeggios furiously, and eventually halfway through – the piece is about 60 minutes long – you realise that these chords of harmonics are taking over; there's just this choir of angels, these resonates taking over, and they're more prevalent than the actual notes that are being played. There's a similarity that happens with us with our guitars." Emerging from the New York no wave scene back in the early ‘80s, Swans called it a day back in 1997 before reforming in 2010, from whence they have released a string of epic, dark and bleak albums culminating in this year's ‘The Glowing Man’, the final Swans release under this configuration. > One of the most moving, gorgeous symphonies opens the orchestral classical season

T

he most well known pieces of classical music are popular for a reason. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.5 is a majestic work and a staple in the classical repertoire, but that doesn't mean it's garish or simple. The first movement is totally gorgeous, the colossal swathes of melodies strike the fine balance between hummable and meaningful. The slow introduction was intended to suggest “Total submission before fate” so the piece can be enjoyed on purely musical or more interpretative levels. Tchaikovsky's 5th should make for a rousing opening concert of Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra's season. The opening piece however will be Les Préludes (Symphonic Poem No. 3) by Franz Liszt. Les Préludes is arguably the first symphonic tone poem ever written, which normally means a single movement that evokes the idea of a poem, or indeed any other source. The piece is a little more delicate than one might expect of Liszt, and I always enjoy short orchestral pieces in concerts since they're easy to digest and wrap one's head around. They’re also closer to pop songs so might help to break through the classical divide and appeal to a wider audience. There will also be a somewhat rare chance to hear a lone viola rise above the orchestral tumult with William Walton's viola concerto. The piece will be performed by Ukrainian violist Andriy Viytovych, Principal Viola of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. Ticket prices vary widely, ranging from £12 to £37 and they are also half price for under 18s and students so it would certainly be an affordable, autumnal Sunday treat. Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Sun 9 October, 2.45pm, www.brightondome.org

THURSDAY 6 The Apprentice BBC1, 9pm It’s back! And this is the episode to catch all of the self-serving but idiotic-sounding catchphrases start. The hopeful entrepreneurs in this extended job interview are given enough rope to hang themselves from the off with the first task leading us to already determine who’s an eejit and who’s got their head together.

The Fall BBC2, 9pm Crime drama set in Northern Ireland. So Gibson and Burns are in a heap of trouble for their conduct and handling of the case. When Spector’s name is released as the arrested suspect in the Belfast Strangler case, his family have to deal with the fall out, but will the medical team even be able to keep him alive?

The Incredible Story Of Marie Antoinette’s Watch With Nicholas Parsons BBC4, 9pm Nicholas Parsons’ interest in timepieces extends further than ‘pings’ at the end of 60 seconds on Just A Minute. He’s fascinated by them. And in particular the most famous and most valuable watch in the world – the socalled Marie-Antoinette. Cool.
