I
t stood there resplendent in all its glory, Proudly reflecting a seaside’s great story. The surging water beneath it glistened As it told that story and the whole world listened. That was back in the Twenties when I was a lad. Patrolling its floorboards I was carefree and glad. I passed by the dancehall and then on to the games, Where I chanced some scarce pennies, but can’t remember the names. At Christmas the theatre’s pantomime beckoned; A most welcome seasonal treat I reckoned. In summer the pierrots pranced in their show. There was always somewhere exciting to go. We were also aware of the sea at the end, Where I gazed at the anglers when I went with a friend And I’ll never forget the diver, with her feats so fantastic, Whose Amazonian form seemed made of elastic. The steamers to France that left the pier behind Are another impression that sticks in my mind. I couldn’t afford to board them, of course. My pleasures came from a different source. Yes, the real reason we bothered I’ve kept out of view. Just read on and I’ll uncover the secret for you. Called the Little Stockbroker, where those who knew how Could extract pocket money – a virtual milch cow. To the ordinary punter a straightforward gamble, Whose innermost secrets they could never unscramble. But we “sharks”, as we called ourselves, we knew the score, We knew how to milk them for spondoolicks galore. So that, then, was our pier. Alas, on the morrow, I returned to a ruin – my heart filled with sorrow. But the bright side, of course, is the i 3. 6. 0, Which the BA has sponsored – so let’s give it a go! DOGGY TALES > National Black Dog Day
D
id you know that it was Black Dog Day, on October 1st? The day was established in order to highlight the plight of black dogs (and cats) in rescue centres, who are less likely to be rehomed than their multicoloured counterparts. Many people choose not to adopt them for superstitious reasons surrounding their ‘unlucky’ colour. Raystede Animal Welfare Centre currently have three beautiful black dogs, who are in desperate need of forever homes, can you help? Murray: My name is Murray and I am a handsome 16 month old male Lurcher. I have plenty of energy and also enjoy a fuss. I need commitment to training and could live with older children but not cats. I am generally social with most dogs, but do need some training. Please research my breed type. Blue and Laddy: We are two LARGE male, five year old labradors. I'm Laddie (left) and my best friend is Blue (right). He is slightly bigger than me. We are fun excitable and boisterous boys who need an experienced home, as we are very bright and eager to learn. Children need to be older and used to dogs. (Not cat tested.)

o that time of year is back again. Your morning alarm can barely conceal its relish as it ruthlessly jolts you out of your comatose nirvana. There must be some mistake... it’s still dark. No mistake my friend. The darkness is back. Already. This is your life until March. It really is beyond my descriptive power to convey how horrible and unnatural it is to wake up in darkness. To travel on creaking public transport services in darkness. To leave work in darkness. All the while silly listicles appear online entitled “10 things successful people do in the morning”, chief among which is usually waking up at 3:45 am because, according to Rex Narcissus, CEO of Whocarescorp: "Things just appear so much clearer at that time of day." I’m delighted for you, Rex. But not everyone can be CEO of a corporation. Unfortunately in this country, normal is being paid slightly less than your cost of living and being sad on dark trains. That's clearly really dumb. I don't know what the solution is, but it's definitely not this. One day someone will have an idea that will make us kick ourselves for not thinking of it sooner – we were probably too tired. Whatever it is, I cannot wait. LATEST 7 | 5

M
emorably portrayed by Audrey Hepburn in the iconic 1961 film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s is given a new lease of life as a stage play with music in a sparkling, sophisticated production starring Georgia May Foote as Holly Golightly. The production visits Theatre Royal Brighton for a week from Tuesday 25 to Saturday 29 October. There will be an additional weekday matinée on Wednesday as well as the regular Thursday and Saturday matinées, in expectation of high demand. Georgia was runner up in last year’s Strictly Come Dancing. Her TV acting roles include Katy Armstrong in Coronation Street, Gemma in This Is England ’86 and Alison Simmons in Grange Hill. Truman Capote’s classic novella has been adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony and Olivier Awardwinning playwright Richard Greenberg (Take Me Out, Three Days of Rain), and contains memorable songs from the era as well as original music by Grant Olding (One Man, Two Guvnors). A
t this time of year I always make time to do a charity event for International Animal Rescue. It's a charity whose work includes freeing and caring for dancing bears in India, rescuing primates from captivity in Indonesia and sterilising and vaccinating stray dogs and cats in developing countries. Wherever possible they return rescued animals to their natural environment, but they also provide a permanent home for animals that can no longer survive in the wild.
“ Wherever possible they return rescued animals to their natural environment ”
I'm a huge animal lover and so is my friend Wendy Louise Oxburry, who puts on the event in Brighton at Hotel Pelirocco It's a fabulous event and always has a great turn out. The who's who of Brighton were all present this year. Alan Knight, OBE, attended the event, who is the founder of the charity. He gave a moving talk about the great work the charity has done and continues to do. This was followed by the entertainment which was myself and Britain's Got Talent finalist Drew Cameron, who had the audience roaring with laughter with his marvellous impressions. Drew is also a fellow animal lover and this cause is close to his heart too. The evening raised a lot of money for International Animal Rescue through the raffle, which had a whole host of amazing prizes. If you want to know more about the work they do or wish to donate to this extremely worth while charity then visit the website. www.internationalanimalrescue.org LATEST 7 | 9

hey (being The Rolling Stones) say that you can’t always get what you want. The trick is to work out exactly what it is that you want right now, and bring in a plan. I like plans. I have just come back from a rare weekend in Scotland. I had a plan. My plan was to bring back a delicious meal of haggis, neeps and tatties – on the train – so that my weekend could come to a tasty tasty close in Brighton with one of my favourite meals ever. But it wasn’t going to be easy. My primary reason for heading up North was to attend a dear friend’s wedding and to celebrate their nuptials. No one dances like a band of inebriated men in kilts. And you know it’s a very personalised wedding when the figures on the top of the cake are Warhammer models made tenderly by the groom the night before. It was a glorious time. However, I had a secondary agenda once I knew that I was going to be in Edinburgh: to make my way to my favourite restaurant and convince them my takeaway needs could be met before my train left Waverley Station at 11.43. To have haggis. I got disproportionately excited at the prospect. Well, you’ve got to take your happies where you can. My plan was to get up at 9am, shower, tidy the flat I’d borrowed, pack, take the bus into town, hotfoot it up to Mum’s Comfort Food (great restaurant name), and hope they’d extend the doggy bag policy I’d benefited from last year to a full meal’s worth. Then, get back to the station without getting lost, picking up presents of shortcake and tablet en route. It’s a tight ask. In case you were wondering, I got into my flat in Brighton at 9pm that evening and feasted on my haggis joyfully. I love it when a plan comes together.

f you, like me, dread the oncoming halloween season then I have a few ideas that might be of use. Halloween for me was always a fun evening of bobbing and ducking for apples, roasted chestnuts, turnip lanterns, not pumpkin, and treacle toffee – always home made and always tooth rottingly sweet. Delicious as an occasional but not sensible in hindsight. Now of course the evening is dominated by the American import of Trick or Treat. I hate it with a vengeance and it's not because I am a kill joy, far from it, I love fun in its many forms but traipsing kids from door to door in the quest for sweets does not seem like a sensible idea to me. And here in Brighton, where for so many of us we seek to eat better and healthier. My solution is to go out so I do not buy into the whole sugar fest, but if I had kids I would not want to exclude them from something that their peers would be doing. So if you are joining in then how about offering fresh fruits to the little demons and devils that knock on your door? Or even better try this delicious product that I have found – Ombar, delicious vegan, organic, raw and dairyfree chocolate! Now I'm not easily led and over the years I have tried more healthy food alternatives – but very few actually taste as good as the real thing. Ombar tastes better! I snacked on their chocolate buttons, devoured a bar of the 72% raw cacao and was sent into choccy heaven with a bar of chocolate filled with a mix of raspberry and coconut, wow! You can find Ombar products at: Seed n Sprout. 82 St Georges Road, Kemptown, Brighton, BN2 1EF Taj the Grocer Ltd. 95 Western Road, Brighton, BN1 2A Infinity Natural Foods Shop. 25 North Road, Brighton, BN1 1YA Healthy Supplies Ltd. HENRY NORMAL > Cowriter of awardwinning TV and film shows including The Royle Family, The Mrs Merton Show and Coogan’s Run, producer of much more, Henry Normal is releasing his new book of poems ‘Staring Directly at the Eclipse’ this month. Victoria Nangle talks to the man himself. Hello Henry, how are you today? 'Still batting' as my dad would say although as he got older he'd add 'not making many runs these days'. What is your writing discipline with poetry and how does it differ from when you were writing comedy? Comedy I can write almost any day of the week. It's a sort of discipline which sounds odd for something so subversive. With poetry I have to be inspired so strangely it's more anarchic. Your poetry covers laughs, loss, struggles… how important is it to include truth in your writing? Not important in the slightest. That, of course, is a lie. Truth is everything in both comedy and poetry, which is both true and poetic but unfortunately not in the least comic. So much for the comedy rule of three. You publicly left Baby Cow Productions 'to pursue creative endeavours in other fields'. Your poetry is clearly a labour of love. Is this one of a number of projects or a sharply focussed love affair with poetry? Poetry is my main creative output at the moment but I like to add jokes into my live performances to amuse myself as much as anything. Don't forget it's a night out of my life as well, so not to be wasted. I'm Executive Producer on the new 'Red
Dwarf' series so that's been fun to work with Doug Naylor and the team. I'm also still involved as Exec. Producer on the third series of 'Uncle' which we're editing at the moment. Some of the poems from this book have already been heard on your acclaimed Radio 4 program ‘A Normal Family’. How was it returning to front and centre stage as a performer? Radio, like live performance and books are easier than TV or film, in that the vision rests more with the creator. In TV there's a lot of collaboration to get the show to screen. In radio you can get to a purer version of what you are trying to communicate, especially if
“ Trains are very good for eavesdropping conversations ”
you are a poet. That said, you don't make as much money as Michael McIntyre or George Clooney. Your poems feel both very personal and relatable. Is there anything that you’ve started writing about and thought – ‘that’s off limits’? Nothing is off limits. The question is can you communicate your thoughts well enough and do they do the subject matter justice. Perhaps your readers can now
LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
break up into small groups and discuss? My favourite word is ‘Oops!’, as it means there’s a story that’s just happened or is happening. Do you have a favourite word, and if so what is it? I don't like to pick favourites in case the others get jealous. As a writer that could well lead to the word 'oops'. What inspires you to be creative, and where is your favourite place to be creative? Trains are very good for eavesdropping conversations and they give you a sense of forward motion. You just have to be conscious not to write all your poems to the rhyme of the train though or say sound a bit da diddly dee, da diddly dum, da diddly dee, da diddly dum.
What do you think should be the future of the burned pier? I think Chris Eubank should be allowed to build his residence there. That way we'd know where he was. Who will you be giving a copy of ‘Staring Directly at the Eclipse’ this Christmas? I don't do Christmas presents. When my autistic son was three he couldn't cope with Christmas so we decided to just ignore it. We will be having a ‘December the 25th’ which I believe is a Friday. We'll probably have chinese food if the local restaurant is open. I'm very happy for you to give 'Staring Directly at the Eclipse' away as a Christmas present. It does fit easily into a Christmas stocking, although it does also go well with chinese food. Staring Directly at the Eclipse is out now. LATEST 7 | 11

> Book now to avoid that last minute festive rush
C
hristmas is coming, the goose is getting fat… what? Too early? Are you sure? Okay I know it's only midOctober but if you want to make sure that your christmas party is securely booked and that you get your first choice then now is the time to get in there and make that booking. Leave it mush longer and you may well find that your first choice is full, your second choice cannot do the date you want and in the end you are left with a choice between a takeaway or a sad carvery – surely no one wants to be eating lukewarm turkey pulling a cheap cracker and wearing a pathetic tissue party hat! If you think that I’m over egging the Christmas pudding then you should be aware that the best restaurants have probably been planning their festive offerings since July, they take it that seriously! And we know for fact that some of them have already taken bookings, yes bookings made back in September! So this week we have a selection of the city's most popular dining and party venues and their christmas offerings, a wide variety of offerings at a wide variety of prices. One of my favourite places, Breeze, is out there with a great selection of Christmas and party offerings. I know it’s good because Team Latest have celebrated the festive season there and had a brilliant and delicious time, enjoying the excellent and generous food and relaxed atmosphere. Breeze have two different menus, one for Christmas Party bookings which is available from 1st 24th December. They are open on Christmas Day with last orders at 3pm and it’s booking fast! The Restaurant at Drakes, Brighton’s stylish seafront hotel,
has a stunning festive menu. Drakes is offering an excellent 3 course fine dining Christmas Party Menu for a very reasonable £40 per person. To add that extra special touch to your event, The Private Dining Room is available for parties of 6 to 12 people. There is no hire charge for reserving this room, which makes it all the more appealing. But be sure to book soon as dates fill quickly in December! Brighton favourites Donatello and Pinocchio never fail to please and over the years they have established themselves as the city’s most popular family restaurants, the ideal place for parties of all sizes all year round and especially at Christmas when their fabulous seasonal decorations alone draw crowds. This year their Christmas menus are a bargain £17.50 for three delicious courses that include plenty Italian favourites including a turkey pizzaiola. Or why not splash out and enjoy their VIP menu at £22.50 to include an aperitivo, olives, coffee and amaretti biscuits go on splash out! Of course Christmas parties do not have to be all turkey and stuffing, stuff that! Curry Leaf Cafe has been making waves on the city’s restaurant scene for some time and their fabulous and authentic Indian cuisine is delicious and fun, and their relaxed reataurant is an ideal venue for a party. Executive chef Kanthi Thamma and his team have conjured an exciting and well priced festive menu that is guaranteed to tantalise the taste buds and excite those of us who dread the onset of turkey in any form. This Christmas OHSO Social is going back to the roots of a traditional festive Christmas. They are transforming into a warming festive winter paradise with their decor and entertainment. OHSO Social offers a perfect location for Brighton Christmas parties, right on the beach front and you can expect a fully themed snug winter paradise to create that perfect Christmas party setting. Guests will be welcomed with a heavenly warm winter Pimms, then you can enjoy a delicious three course meal or ample festive buffet accompanied by their vocalist singing jazzedup festive classics and contemporary numbers too. “ Classical ballet at its most delicious ”
A
horrid tale of envy and betrayal, Nabucco was Verdi’s first operatic triumph (and incidentally Ellen Kent’s too). Firmly grounded upon Nicolae Dohotaru’s excellent orchestra, a fullvoiced chorus and attentive extras from the Theatre Workshop, the first night of this tour ran smoothly. Lurie Gisca’s Nabucco was splendidly both brutal and penitent. Olga Perrier warmed to her part as the bloodthirsty Abigaille, being quite hateful towards her sister Fenena (a golden voiced Liza Kadelnik) and Ismaele (heroic tenor Vitalii Liskovetskyi). It was young bass Vadym Chernihovskyi as the aged Zaccaria who gave gravitas to this wicked tale and won our hearts. Theatre Royal, 5 October 2016 Andrew Connal ★★★★★

W
ith their masks, exotic costumes and generally faceless persona, Goat have also cultivated some kind of myth about their back story, one that involves playing music as children in an isolated Northern Sweden village, as part of a long tradition of communal music making in those parts. “The elders were playing very rhythmic music with lots of drums and they would sing in an olden type of Swedish," Goat say about this community tradition. "It is also influenced, as we are, by many other types of music. For example, in the ‘70s, they were influenced by Swedish progressive rock. When we talk about Goat as a musical tradition from our village, part of the tradition is to be very openminded to music from all parts of the world. We took the name Goat when we were older. There have been previous incarnations of Goat and the music has not been the same in all the years, but it comes from the same musical tradition, and it is why we play like we do." Goat’s debut album of 2012 was called ‘World Music’, an album that had afrobeat at its heart, along with Jefferson Airplane style psychrock, postpunk, Turkish rock, desert blues, krautrock, and acid folk in the mix. It was pancultural as well as polyrhythmic. It was mesmeric, hypnotic stuff. They signed a deal and started playing outside their immediate environs for the first time. Forward to 2016 and their third album, Requiem is a continuation of their sound and collective outlook; an organic, livesounding mix of electrified freakouts, unplugged tribal rhythms, and meandering hippy folk. "Psychedelia is music that is free," say Goat. Go free your mind... All Saints Church, Monday 17 October, 7pm, £15

> The original Awesome Tape From Africa, Ata Kak, plays Patterns
A
wesome Tapes From Africa is a record label/website dedicated to sharing hidden gems from the continent. Some are offered as free downloads but many result in proper album releases, such as Ata Kak’s ‘Obaa Sima’ released last year. ATFA is essentially just Brian Shimkovitz, who spent years researching the Ghanaian musical genre of Hiplife. Shimkovitz enthused about the Ata Kaka track ‘Moma Yendodo’ in his inaugural blog post in 2006: “You may never hear anything like this elsewhere. I bought this on the street from a guy selling tapes displayed on one of those big, vertical wooden racks in Cape Coast, Ghana. No one I know in Ghana listens to this frenetic leftfield rap madness.” The Ghanaian electronic/rap/highlife music of Ata Kak is fun disco music: Kak’s vocal delivery features some beguilingly melodic, rhythmic and hypnotic scatting which should translate well live. Also performing is the more bassdriven DJ Katapila, whose sound is inspired by the neotraditional dance music forms of gome, kpanlogo and gyama. This concert is something different: a rare chance to see an underground sensation live, and at a great intimate venue like Patterns with a great sound system. Expect a nicely contrasting double bill, a raucous party, and for it to be more lively than your typical indie gig. Awesome Tapes From Africa with Ata Kak & DJ Katapila Patterns, Brighton, Wednesday 19 October, patternsbrighton.com

COMEDY
VICTORIA NANGLE > Midweek madness
@latestvicky
T
he weekend starts here – throw conventional social timetabling out the window with some great comedy slap bang in the middle of your week. Komedia has two fantastic offerings on Wednesday night. Zoe Lyons’ show will resonate with many Brightonians as the TV panelshow regular paints a picture of being an awkward gay kid with a different accent and a strong case of alopecia. From trying so hard to fit in, Lyons now happily celebrates being in a gang of one and not being shy about it. Felicity Ward follows on from last year’s highly acclaimed show with this one, with a title prompted by a study revealing that people with anxiety and depression are 50 per cent more likely to die in any number of circumstances. Making serious thought very
funny, and including a story about losing her laptop on a bus, this show has already garnered four and fivestar reviews. A late notice addition, Michael McIntyre is playing over in Eastbourne on Thursday. The show’s already sold out, but if you can beg, borrow or steal a ticket it’ll be a treat. Zoe Lyons: Little Misfit, Wednesday 12 October, Komedia, 8pm, £14; Felicity Ward: 50% More Likely To Die, Wednesday 12 October, Komedia, 8pm, £12/10; Michael McIntyre – Plus Support, Thursday 13 October, Congress Theatre, Eastbourne, 8pm, £22.50 – SOLD OUT

t’s difficult to do justice to the works of local artist Cecil Rice in words alone. Their astounding luminosity really has to be seen to be believed. Cecil loves painting coastal subjects in England, and also travels to Venice, the Mediterranean, India and North Africa for inspiration. He is fascinated by the mesmerising quality of direct sunlight on water, shoreline, buildings and landscape, and in recent years he has increasingly worked in oils. Says the artist: “A large canvas allows a feeling of space, freedom and some abstraction, as well as wonderful textures achieveable.” Light is key to Cecil’s preoccupation as a painter, and a full range of subjects can be seen in his book Cecil Rice

WEDNESDAY 12 Horizon: The Lost Tribes Of Humanity BBC2, 9pm Alice Roberts explores the latest discoveries in the study of human origins. Sounds pretty straightforward, but it turns out there were four other distinct species of human once on the planet at the same time as us. Crazy, right? Why has no one put this in Doctor Who? Find out more.
World Of Weird Channel 4, 10pm Feel a feeling but don’t know a good place to express it? Behold your guide! Feeling ticked off? In Dallas there is an Anger Room, filled with smashable items all ready. Fancy a spot of platonic affection? Head to Japan and a cuddle cafe. Plus there’s the Air Sex Championships in Texas – like air guitar but... different.
Stage School E4, 7.30pm They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch – there’s always got to be a catch. Pia (left) learns there’s no such thing as a free spray tan, as all does not go according to plan. Meanwhile Dan gets spruced up for a date with Megan. THURSDAY 13 The Apprentice BBC1, 9pm In what way is Japanese denim different from other denim? This is the big question for the candidates, as this week’s task is to create an advertising campaign – including packaging, a TV advert, and a bus shelter advert – for jeans made from the stuff. Which team will bite off more than it can chew? Both.
Hunted Channel 4, 9pm Five fugitives are still on the run, but are two or more heads really better than one? Mind games and paranoia abound, and Yorkshire ladies Anna and Elizabeth become increasingly spooked. Ayo and Madu go that step further and part company. No one to give you away, and no one to watch your back either.
Bitten Syfy, 9pm You always knew that if there was one stand of supernatural peril, it wouldn’t be long before others joined in. Before you know it there’ll be a power play from Santa and the Easter Bunny. You saw it here first. Anyway, Elena is forced to help Dr Bauer, whilst the Pack and the witches work together to find out about Aleister.

It’s 1905 and egyptologist Howard Carter has been hired by Lord Carnarvon to find Tutankhamun’s tomb.

Father Ted More4, 10pm Double delights from the dimwitted clerics tonight. MONDAY 17 Only Connect BBC2, 8.30pm It’s Monday and it’s quiz-time, keeping those little grey cells well-oiled so that they can keep going all week. And Victoria Coren Mitchell’s quiz is that careful balance of quiz that’s clever enough so you don’t feel patronised, but dim enough so you don’t feel like a total doofus. And she’s witty too – bonus.
Cold Feet ITV1, 9pm David’s got that sinking feeling. And it’s not because Karen has found out that his finances are so far into the dumps they need their own rubbish truck. She’s very understanding about that – in fact she’s even suggested he could dip into the girls’ trust funds for help. No, it’s the fact that he’s already rinsed those funds. Oh.
Made In Chelsea E4, 9pm Nobody likes waiting. Queueing may be the country’s national pastime, but waiting... to find out if someone wants you as much as you’ve just told them you want them? Nah, no one likes that. But since JP’s laid his cards on the table Binky’s got to decide. Not that she’s short on advice from her fellow Chelseans.
