DOGGY TALES > Victoria Eisermann – model and celebrity charity founder climbs Mount Kilimanjaro

W

est Sussex based Victoria Eisermann, model and celebrity charity cofounder of K9 Angels, has just returned from climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, in order to raise awareness and funds to spay and neuter dogs. The charity K9 Angels, was founded in 2011 and has since rehomed over 800 dogs, spayed 3,000 dogs and raised hundreds of thousands of pounds to build a shelter that now houses 110 dogs. Despite having a slipped disc, Victoria completed the climb in five gruelling days, taking a further day and a half to descend. She suffered badly with heat stroke and was violently sick. She also split open her lip, fell over numerous times hurting herself badly and bruised her hips from sleeping on the floor (where the temperature plummeted to minus 20 degrees at night). Aside from her injuries it was extremely difficult to breathe with just 50% oxygen at the top of the mountain.

“ I thought of saving puppies with every step I took, the climb is the hardest thing I have ever done

In spite of all that she bravely soldiered on saying: "I thought of saving puppies with every step I took. This climb is the hardest thing I have ever done." She added: “I'm determined to help as many dogs as possible. My target is to raise a minimum £10,000, double what I raised last year." So why is spaying so crucial? It is the single most important thing that we can do to save dogs from all the suffering and death that their overpopulation causes. Spaying and neutering are routine, affordable surgeries that can prevent thousands of animals from being born, only to suffer and struggle to survive on the streets, be abused by cruel or neglectful people, or be euthanised in animal shelters for lack of a loving home. It is estimated that there are over 100,000 homeless dogs in the UK, two million stray dogs in Bucharest and Romania and 6,000 in Cyprus. So far Victoria has raised £2,000, if she was to raise just £5,000 that would mean 300 female dogs could be spayed, which would prevent approximately 20,100,000 unwanted puppies.

B

righton, well without doubt it has to be Britain's sexiest resort and if you are planning to stay in Britain's sexiest resort then no doubt you will want to stay in what is perhaps the city's sexiest hotel. Drakes is certainly a sexy hotel and a sophisticated one too. It opened at a time in the city when there were large hotels, guest houses and bed and breakfasts. It soon became clear that Drakes was going to break the mold and offer something both new and completely different. The words 'Boutique Hotel' have been bandied around for years now but how many really deserve that name, and what in fact does it mean? Drakes might well have been given that accolade at the start but over ten years on it now stands apart as a luxury hotel, a venue that offers a wide range of services all delivered with style and panache. By just walking in you can sense that this is somewhere special, it looks good, the staff are friendly and at the same time discreet, there is nowhere a sense that you have embarked on a bland corporate experience, far from it, from the cocktail bar to the restaurant and of course to the beautifully designed and well appointed rooms Drakes shout quality. Over the years Drakes has built up an impressive reputation and an equally impressive list of regular clients, local, national and international. It has become a 'must stay' hotel for visiting celebrities too. But the story is much bigger than this so I went along to meet the team and find out exactly what it is that keeps Drakes at the top of the game.

I met Carla ter Maat, sales, marketing and events manager to talk about what the hotel now offers. "We are increasingly well known for our ability to host private parties and meetings of various sizes. We can offer accommodation for conference delegates and even day conferences. We offer free hire for breakfast meetings for local companies up to twelve people board room style and 18 theatre style. We have become one of the city's best loved wedding venues and over the years we are proud to have hosted some of the most stylish weddings the city has seen. We are of course licensed for weddings so your whole day and night can be spent here. We can offer the whole hotel so you feel like you are staying in a grand seafront house rather than a hotel with private and exclusive use for your entire event.

“ By just walking in you can sense that this is somewhere special ” "The restaurant can also be booked for exclusive use for all kinds of parties of up to 40 guests and there is also a private dining room which seats 12 guests where you will have a dedicated waiter throughout your event." Are all your hotel guests visitors to the city? "No, we find that a lot of local people will treat themselves to a romantic and indulgent stay with us." From day one Drakes has been proud of the dining that they offer and rightly so. Today the chef is Andy Vitez who took over as head chef earlier this year. He has been with the restaurant for five years now but when the opportunity came to take over as head chef he was delighted to accept the challenge. It's a challenge that he has more than met and his exciting cooking and new menus are delighting customers old and new. Restaurant manager Anthony Flaherty has come to the business with years of experience and has already made significant improvements to the restaurant and the service offered. What is it that makes the Restaurant at Drakes so appealing? "Drakes is perhaps summed up by saying that it is special, the food is special and the experience is special too. We're classic and refined, we serve delicious seasonal and local food in smart surrounds with an air of refinement. That said we are never stuffy, the mood is always relaxed and the service friendly, and our pricing policy is to offer great food at sensible prices too." Chef Andy Vitez is bringing his own style to the already popular restaurant and it is being met with accolades from regulars and newcomers alike. "I love cooking at Drakes and especially the stunning local produce that we get here in Sussex. I am originally from Hungary and there may be a few influences from there but the emphasis will always be on great British produce using both classic and modern kitchen skills and techniques. The food here has always been of the highest quality and I fully intend to retain that respect and where I can build on that reputation. We have the highest score of all Brighton restaurants in the 2017 Good Food Guide for the eighth consecutive year, and I have to live up to that and of course try to beat it." Hotel Manager Richard Hayes has been with the hotel since day one and has seen the hotel through its development. "We are really proud of the reputation that we have built, as a team, and we love the fact that we have so many regular guests who come back time after time, that sort of loyalty really is the proof that we do things right at Drakes." I have loved Drakes since the day it opened, eaten there, stayed there and attended many parties and private functions, and I have never been disappointed by this jewel in the city's hotel crown. So now it's time for a quick cocktail and perhaps a spot of lunch…

L

unch, well to be honest I didn't do the cocktail, good as they always are I knew it was a bad idea with so much to do. We had the lunch menu: 20 a head sounded like a great deal, and my word it was. An amuse bouche of mackerel and apple pickle certainly hit the spot before our starters, for me roast figs with home made ricotta, beautiful smoked ham and pistachios. Ms TM had the game terrine and I sneaked a taste. I have to say that on the whole a lot of game terrines and pies lack a real game flavour but this was exceptional, punchy, deeply flavoured and well constructed, a stunning dish. My main of herb crusted cod with black beans and chorizo managed to balance the white fish with a fresh tasting herb crust, darkly savoury beans and the pimento zing of the sausage. It was generous too, none of that tiny portioned lunch menu nonsense here! Both too full for an individual dessert we decided to share the new pastry chef's take on pumpkin pie and I am delighted to say that she has converted me from a dish that previously I had found difficult to enjoy, this was as light as a feather and complimented by dried apple slices, pumpkin seed brittle and a cardamom ice cream, plus a whole feast of extra delights that added hints of salt as well and sweet. One glass of very good Viognier, I can show restraint, and I left very happy indeed.

T

he Big Brighton Film Challenge, is an annual film event with the purpose of creating the biggest and best short films in Brighton and Hove, giving people the opportunity to network as well as encouraging more filmmaking in the city. Last week was the launch of the film challenge at Latest Music Bar, which attracted filmmakers, writers and actors/actresses from across Sussex. Small groups were created and given the task of making a short film of no longer than ten minutes. To make things a little trickier the filmmakers are only allowed to film outside, in and around the city of Brighton and Hove. The groups have been given until 4th November to complete and submit their short film, at which point a screening will be held in order to determine our first grand champion filmmakers. Everyone is welcome to watch the screening of the films, which will be held on Tuesday 8th November, 7pm at Latest Music Bar. The best films will be made into a programme named Big Brighton Film Challenge and shown on Latest TV. The event is free of charge, so if you have a passion for film why not come along and see what some of the city's brightest budding talents can produce? See you there! A

new series of TOWIE spin off show The Only Way Is Marbs, has just started on ITV2. Some of the The Only Way Is Essex cast flew into Marbella at the beginning of this month to start filming and were pictured partying and posing for pictures at top night clubs in the area. I was in Spain too at the same time, but I was in Malaga and from the drama filled scenes I've seen on 'The Only Way Is Marbs' trailer, I certainly had a much more relaxing time in Spain than they did! However my time in Spain was short lived and I had to get back to work...

“ However my time in Spain was short lived and I had to get back to work ” My first gig was local and in Portslade. I was the MC at new comedy night The Comedy Carriage, at The Railway Inn. Comedians Dan Evans, Matt Whistler, Jason Knight were on the bill and comedy duo Brian Damage and Krysstal headlined the show. Brian Damage and Krysstal first met at the Edinburgh Festival 20 years ago and have been a regular fixture at the Festival for the last eight years. They have travelled the world making people laugh with their comedy songs. Brian is infamously grumpy and deadpan, while his assistant Krysstal is glamorous but ditzy. The combination is unique and very funny. They are also in a band called The Wrinklepickers, which play country style songs. They gave me a copy of their CD and I loved it!

If you fancy going to the Comedy Carriage at The Railway Inn, Portslade, the next one is 4 November. Tickets will be available online and at the bar therailwayinnportslade.co.uk LATEST 7 | 9

top. No, stop that other thing you’re doing at the same time as reading this. You know, checking Facebook, reading emails, planning the logistics for travel this Christmas in your head – all of it. Stop, and give yourself a break. Can you remember the last time you had one? In this world of hubbub and multitasking I am as guilty as anyone of never sitting still. Even my downtime has to be scheduled as a yoga class, and still I absentmindedly start planning the week’s meal menus at the same time (an elaborate way of saying which day has pizza and which one has fish fingers for dinner). When I watch TV on a quiet night in I’ve now downsized my fidgeting so that I look at my phone, its games and messages, less if I knit a blanket at the same time. Keeps the hands busy and away from tiny screens, but it’s still doing more than one thing. And as much as they’re all small things, sometimes it does a brain good just to stop and breath. I find this to be especially the case as the evenings start to draw in. I was in bed by 7.30pm the other night. I don’t know about you, but I know I’m tired when I’m voluntarily curled up under a duvet at a time my nineyearold niece would deem too early. This is also a time when so much happens in the social calendar of the year. Halloween parties start to be planned, those friends I said I’d meet up with back in May start reminding me that it would be a shame to wait another year to catch up (they’re right!), and – I’m saying it – Christmas starts to pull on my mental strings reminding me of all the prep to be geared up for. So I’m stopping. And I advise you do the same. Just for a bit. A readjustment period for the evergreens. And breath.

was at the BBC the other day with the delightful Allison Ferns talking food as I do every month. I love going in to chat with her and taking along local food producers to talk about what they do. On this occasion we had finished our section and Alison was reading a little news item about the current craziness of people dressing as clowns and, brandishing weapons, leaping out and scaring people. I happened to say that I had once studied clowning, in both London and for a short time in Paris. I have a clown face, a painted one I mean, although the natural one can look pretty clownlike I know. Alison turned on the mic and questioned me about it so I explained what and why. It was a long time ago, 37 years to be precise, and I have not "donned the motley" since. It was something I did, something I was fascinated by back then and something that I have no intention now of going back to. I leaned how scary clowns can be back then and I totally understand why some people are freaked out by them. So I really do not understand how people can even think that it's okay to dress up like that and go out with the sole intention of scaring people. Okay plenty of us can cope, a bit of a scare is okay from time to time and some of us may even like it, going to see horror and chiller movies – each to their own. But we also need to remember that there are a great many vulnerable people out there, people who might once have been protected by a care system that was well funded and, well let's just say caring. Now they are less protected and often have to find their own way through life and the sudden appearance of "funny" clowns may not be funny at all. How cruel can someone be to take something meant to be fun and turn it into an instrument of terror, yes terrorism, that is after all what this is.

To mark the occasion, VIP’s (very important pooches) from Dogs Trust’s nearby Shoreham rehoming centre will came along to help shoppers sniff out some up totheminute fashion finds and vintage pieces. Customers also had the opportunity to be styled by members of staff, who shared their favourite outfits of the day on the charity’s Instagram page @dogstrust. This exciting new venture is

> Burgers, beer and fine pub food

T

wo stories this week. Firstly a big hats off to a new fast food joint in the centre of town. I will confess that despite not being a fan of fast food there are times when they play their part in what can be a very busy life. I had heard of Smash Burger from an American friend and he was full of praise, so when I was invited along I thought why not, let's give it a go. I'm glad I did. The premise is fast but quality. They use fresh and not frozen meats and they have their own unique "smash" method of cooking the burgers that works, The seasoning is good and butter is employed on the griddle. Add to that great sides, including deep fried pickles, and a good selection of drinks, including beers, and what is not to like? Needless to say I have already been back and not just because it’s fast and convenient, but because it is good and tasty and great value. Smash Burger, 5354 North Street, Brighton, 01273 771216

S

econdly this week I dined at one pub because the pub we had planned to eat in was rammed to the rafters with quizzers, not that I have anything against quizzers, I am one myself. It was though too busy so instead we headed to The Independent at the top of Hanover where we found a very warm and friendly welcome. The pub is immaculate, stylish and comfortable, it has a nice blend of fashionable with trad styling that simply works, and the menu is simple and stylish too. Ms McD chose the vegetarian dish of polenta with parmesan and panko fried poached egg which she loved. Ms C and I found it hard to decide so chose two meaty dishes and waited for them to arrive before making a selection. In the end Ms C chose the prosciutto wrapped pork loin served with mashed potato, pickled carrot and a rillette. It was beautifully presented, generous to a fault and very tasty, or at least that is LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

what she said as she made her way steadfastly across the plate. The rillette was breaded and fried and we all declared that it was, in a sense, a rissole. How I miss rissoles. I took the rare feather blade steak with fries, peppercorn sauce and salad. I love peppercorn sauce but all too often it is a harsh and badly made slop. This was very good indeed as was the steak. Our server had said that it was not a huge cut of meat but I would dispute that statement as it was a good size and certainly big enough. It was perfectly cooked too, properly rare as in red but not oozing blood and the outside was seared and tasty – but tasting of meat and not of "pan". Yes, how often does that griddled meat actually taste of burnt griddle? The salad was crisp and fresh and nicely dressed and all for a round £10, brilliant value in my book. We were so impressed by the mains that Ms McD and Ms C both decided to try the orange bread and butter pudding which they said was good but not stellar. I must say that bread and butter pud is not a dish that I would serve warmed up from cold, I like it fresh from the oven. light and still fluffy. I chose a milk chocolate tart with glazed pecans and coffee cream. Now this really was stellar, a brilliantly made crisp chocolate pastry case with a smooth ganache and topped with plenty of whole nuts in a sharp caramel crust. Coffee cream on the side was not over sweetened and added perfect balance. We drank excellent beers, and one of those fancy ginger beers, and our bill came to an impressive £20 each or thereabouts. I will certainly be back. The Independent, 95 Queen’s Park Road, Brighton, BN2 0GH 01273 602822, www.theindependent.pub

I S L A > The young and fresh Brightonian indie band met at Sussex University and have recently completed their first ever tour and EP. Sarah George finds out more about Matt Kos, John Mear, James Southard and Stef Rothbone. Hi ISLA! Nice to see you guys fresh from performing at Southsea Fest. How was the show? Matt: “Everyone there seemed really into it which was nice to see.” Stef: “It was so much fun! All kinds of animals came along on tour, too. Cats, dogs, lizards, even chickens.” James: “It was the best of both worlds: we got to perform and also watch some really good bands.” What’s the dream for ISLA? Stef: “The dream isn’t to be absolutely massive, at the moment I think we just want to make cool stuff and keep moving forwards.” John: “We want to be able to go fulltime, too.” James: “I think we’re all at the stage where we’re really enjoying gigs, every show we play just feels like we are doing more and more the right thing.” You describe your genre as “indie, atmospheric, dreamy”. Who would you say is your biggest influence? Matt: “Tame Impala. They’re a really cool band who definitely push the boat out, which is inspiring to watch.” John: “Jason Isbell, but not so much from a song writing perspective.” 16 | LATEST 7

James: “For creating a live atmosphere, it’s got to be Ben Howard.” What has your experience been with the Brighton music scene? Matt: “There are a lot of bands, which is great because you get to make so many contacts & see lots of shows, but it is pretty competitive.” What are your Brightonian haunts of choice? Stef: “City Books is my absolute favourite.” John: “Pelicano or the Marwood.” Matt: “GAK or Alfie’s music shop!” James: “I love to just roam Brighton on a sunny day.” Have you got any advice for aspiring musicians? John: “I’d say find the right people to make music with.” Stef: “Yeah, find fun people. Also, go to shows, and when you do, talk to everybody. Give other local bands positive attention.” Matt: “Make loads of contacts. Artistically speaking, just believe in what you are doing.”

“ Find the right people to make music with ”

So, what’s next for ISLA? Matt: “We’re already thinking a bit about our next EP, even though we’ve only just finished ‘Giants’.”

CORRINE BAILEY RAE > Jeff Hemmings talks with the multiaward winning and highly acclaimed British soul singer Corrine Bailey Rae ahead of her show at Brighton Dome’s Concert Hall

T

he doubleGrammy winning, Mercury nominated, fivemillionalbumsselling artist has travelled far and wide since she first emerged as a talent of rare note with her debut single ‘Like A Star’ back in 2005. It’s a long way from her debut gig at the infamous Duchess of York venue in her home city of Leeds. “I was in an indie band and playing as part of the youth club scene,” she recalls. “And I remember playing the Duchess of York for the first time, and looking out at the audience. “It wasn’t just our friends and family; there were some strangers there, people who may not have been paying attention at first, but as the set went on they would come in to the room and I remember getting applause from strangers. It’s that thrill you get from playing in front of an audience even if it’s just 100 people. It’s the same feeling you get for big audiences. Time disappears and expands!” It seems that Rae will never forget her roots, even though she is now regularly playing and meeting rock and jazz royalty. Since her chart topping selftitled debut, she has had the pleasure of meeting Herbie Hancock and developing a close relationship with him, that began when she was asked to take part on an album of Joni Mitchell covers. “I did one of Joni’s songs called ‘River’ with him. He won a Grammy for

that album. That was an amazing experience. I got to meet Joni Mitchell recently when I went to see Wayne Shorter and Herbie play at the Hollywood Bowl a few years ago. She was there. She’s not been well, and she is in a wheelchair, but her eyes lit up. She liked my version of ‘River’, which I was pleased to hear as she is obviously very opinionated. “Herbie and me also did a performance at the White House, part of a concert honoring Paul McCartney (they performed ‘Blackbird’) with the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. I’ve enjoyed being on the stage with these incredibly experienced and seasoned musicians who are really free, and improvise a lot. It became a transcendent experience singing with them.

“ It’s that thrill

you get from playing in front of an audience even if it’s just 100 people ”

It’s opened up my mind to what a show could be, how you interact with people, how free you can be, what you can do with that window of time.” Her recent album The Heart Speaks In Whispers reflects this heightened spiritualism; the record’s neosoul grooves

are gentle yet sophisticated, intelligent yet naturalistic. “With this record I just want to see what would come out when I created this space for myself. I was playing guitar, piano, and opening my mouth to see what would come out. A lot of the songs came out in that natural way. And I would go back over the tape and see what was there, what the song was about, chase it down & see what the meaning was. “Like the song ‘Caramel’: ’It isn’t love, but pain that makes you brave’. That first line came out in that way with that melody and that rhythm. And I would hear it back, and try and work out what I was trying to say, what was coming

through. I trusted the songs. “Nature is a big theme on the record, the way it taught me about transformation, peace, that thing of the sublime, that thing about how our lives are constantly about change. “I feel nature reassures us with those dramatic things that happen, like loss, damage and all these huge forces. When I’m back in Yorkshire, and I’m walking the hills, seeing burnt fields and going back a few months later and seeing how green they are. Definitely nature has really informed me, and my worldview.” Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Thurs 3 November, 7.15pm doors, £22.5026.50 LATEST 7 | 17

STAGE Stepping Out > The Boys In The Band

I

t's 1968, almost fifty years ago and off Broadway a play is making an enormous stir. Mart Crowley's The Boys In the Band has opened and is perhaps the first ever drama on stage to openly portray gay men and their world. In these days of much improved tolerance and acceptance that might not seem so extraordinary, but it was. This was preStonewall riots and men and women lived closeted and clandestine lives. Crowley's play was indeed a milestone and within two years it had been made into a Hollywood movie which very soon attained cult status. The play centres around a birthday party at which a group of gay men have gathered to honour a friend. But the evening becomes fraught with tensions as clashes occur between factions. It's delivered with razor sharp wit and wicked one liners that have become almost cliches since, but it does show a time when being gay was not easy. Whilst here in the UK and across the waters in both America and most of Europe, homosexuality is pretty much accepted, there are still areas of

the world where it is not only not accepted but is a punishable offence and even an offence carrying the death penalty. So with our easy life here, what better time to revisit this work and remember that whilst we have it good many do not. And who better to head up this new production that Olivier Award winning actor and writer Mark Gatiss and his husband Ian Hallard along with an amazing cast of TV and West End stars. The entire cast see this production as an important opportunity to remind older people of how important this controversial play once was but also how it still has a relevance today to a younger audience . Strong as the message is we should also remember that this is a hilarious piece of writing that exposes the acidity of camp repartee and the power of the well delivered bitchy aside. Mark Gatiss is playing the central character of Harold in this new production which will be sat as it originally was in 1968 New York. REVIEW > Alan Cumming Alan Cumming has had a glittering career. So why now is he touring a concert of “Sappy Songs”? The answer for those of us attending was immediately obvious, because he is good, very good, and of course because he can. Accompanied by piano, cello and drums he took us on a journey of moving music and stories and hilarious show biz anecdotes. Musically the two sets were wide ranging from show tunes to pop hits, Kurt Weill to Miley Cyrus. Cumming has a great voice too, a powerful voice that can belt out a number but also sweet enough to handle the gentlest of songs. He also sings the entire set with his delightful soft Scottish accent, barely a trace of pop style Americana in his diction, except for the comedy highlight of the evening when he delivers his Trojan condom ad! Joined for two numbers by the excellent Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus, this was an evening of pure delight. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome 8 October 2016 Andrew Kay ★★★★★

he big, the small and the ‘undertheradar sneakpeek’ are the order of the day. This week kicks off with Romesh Ranganathan arriving with his new tour show ‘Irrational’ at the Brighton Dome’s Concert Hall on Tuesday. He’s come a long way from throwing raps at a free new act show in the Hanover pub, with a new series of his acclaimed BBC series Asian Provocateur in the works and his misanthropic smile to be found on panel shows across the TV landscape. Versatile and with his own true comic voice grumpily coming through, this show explores Ranganathan’s own rational worldview. The weekend sees the return of Laughing Horse’s Big Saturday night after a summer absence. With a collection of respected and away from the mainstream comics – including Sarah Bennetto and Sameena Zehra – as well

as a late license in the bar below with discount drinks for comedy punters, it’s an affordable and enjoyable welcome to autumn. And finally, Jon Richardson’s Work In Progress gives a sly peek behind the curtain of this delightful comic’s working methods. > Poliça and the downfall of music

F

ronted by Channy Leaneagh, and featuring dual drumming and a bassist, Poliça are underpinned by the music of unseen member, and partner of Leaneagh, Ryan Olson, who is also the man behind the large ensemble Gayngs. Released earlier this year ‘United Crushers’ is the third album by Poliça, a muscular electronica meets percussive altrock work that is both political and personal. "Minneapolis is a very industrial town," says Leaneagh, "there's lots of grain silos and old factories, and ‘United Crushers’ is tagged on a lot of them. It's kind of a homage to them and a homage to our city. They are antiestablishment, as most graffiti crews are, I guess." Although there has always been a political streak in Poliça, this has been heightened by the recent birth of her second child. "The record is not completely political. The way I write is very personal. I'm speaking out from my soul and it's coming from a place of folk music. I was a folk singer at first; I was into a lot of American traditional music, gospel and modern folk like Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan, and I played the fiddle in lots of bluegrass bands, on street corners… And so I mostly have these heartbreak songs, but overall I'm now writing about the human condition and I think that does get amped up when you're a parent and you're bringing a child into this world." Never imagining she would be in a 'rock' band, Leaneagh says: "The thing that set in motion was being asked to sing in Gayngs, Ryan's band, which is how we got to know each other. And I bought my first computer in 2011. I was looking for ways to write songs at night when my daughter was sleeping, and I could wear headphones, sing softly into the mic and build songs on Garage Band. And that's when I started getting away from writing songs on the guitar. So, the downfall of music!" Concorde 2, Sun 23 Oct, 7.30pm, £15

> Soundtrack maestro John Carpenter begins his first ever UK tour at Brighton Dome

Y

ou will have probably heard John Carpenter’s music before, even if you don’t know it yet. Popular as both a film director and soundtrack composer, Carpenter wrote the ubiquitous Halloween’s Theme (Main Title) and composed music for Assault on Precinct 13, Escape From New York, The Fog and many more. He also created music for his first major film Dark Star: a curious scifi black comedy that I’d recommend if you’re a fan of things like Garth Marenghi or Silent Running. 2015 saw Carpenter take on a fresh challenge with the release of Lost Themes, his debut studio album of soundtracktype music intended to stand alone. He enthused that “Lost Themes was all about having fun…. The plan was to make my music more complete and fuller, because we had unlimited tracks. I wasn’t dealing with just analogue any more. It’s a brand new world.” Lost Themes 1 and 2 (the follow up album released this year) are enjoyable, melodic listens that are clearly redolent of his earlier soundtrack work. After a US run of dates, Carpenter begins his first ever UK live tour at the Dome this Thursday. The full band is a family affair, including Carpenter’s son Cody Carpenter on guitar, John Spiker on bass, John Konesky on guitar and Scott Seiver on drums. Reviews of the US shows have been positive, where Carpenter included performances of classic pieces along with projected film footage. The concert is therefore not only a unique nostalgic opportunity to see a soundtrack icon, but should be a great evening in its own right. The striking movie visuals should provide a fun thematic counterpoint too. John Carpenter, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Thurs 20 October, 7pm, £34.50, brightondome.org

FRIDAY 21 Stand Up To Cancer Channel 4, 7pm Prepare for an evening of starstudded fun and charity awareness, kicking off with this Davina McCall-hosted section, joined by Adam Hills and Alan Carr, a Celebrity Gogglebox, with further appearances later by Britney Spears, Noel Gallagher, David Tennant, John Bishop and Jon Hamm. Lots!

The Level ITV1, 9pm You know when you just want a bad thing to be over so you hurry it along, and then make it worse? Someone ought to tell Nancy about how that works, as she pushes to accelerate the investigation and turn the tables on the man who may be hunting her. She suggests a risky undercover op. End in tears?

Hooten And The Lady Sky1, 9pm These two have paired up pretty quickfast. They may *claim* to be independent treasure hunters, but Hooten’s in a jam and Lady Alex is on her way to Moscow to help the adventurer in his search for a lost Fabergé egg. People are so careless with their priceless goodies. And with their links to a criminal underbelly.
