CAT TALES > Black Cat Day

T

hursday 27th October is Black Cat Day. The day was established in order to highlight the plight of these beautiful animals. Sadly due to outdated superstitious beliefs many black cats sit alone and unloved in rescue centres across the country. You can help by adopting one today, these two fine specimens currently reside in Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare and are patiently waiting for forever homes. Buz: Hi, my name is Buz and I am female, aged six years. I am affectionate and very playful and I enjoy lots of fuss from adults. I am fine with older children (over 12 years) but not that keen on being picked up. I am confident generally and I am always pleased to see you. I do need regular flea treatment as I have an allergy to flea bites. I am not keen on other cats and I am scared of dogs. I would like a nice garden to explore but I am unlikey to venture very far. I have lots of love to give to the right home, could I be the cat for you? Lobuz: Hi, my name is Lobuz and I am a five year old neutered male. I have been at Raystede for some time and am desperate for a home to call my own. I am very confident and

Buz affectionate and also extremely intelligent. I love a fuss and would love to sit on your lap. I adore human company and would benefit from a home where I am not left alone for long periods. I did used to live with a female cat and Raystede staff now feel that I would benefit from a feline friend. I have lived with a dog before so I could possibly do so again. I am brilliant with children. A garden is essential please. I am looking for an experienced cat owner ideally as I have developed a spray behaviour issue which I need to unlearn which may take time. The staff feel this issue is stressrelated because I am unhappy. Please can someone give me a home? I am very miserable despite the love that the staff show me here. There is no place like home!

MICK HUCKNALL

> Celebrating the 25th anniversary of their hit album Stars, Simply Red will be hitting the road in November with a series of UK tour dates. Mick Hucknall talks family, fame and life on tour What are your thoughts on Stars being 25 years old? For an album to have that kind of longevity you obviously did something right in the studio back then? After the success of A New Flame‚ I set myself the challenge of composing a whole album of original songs. I could never have imagined that Stars would have the impact it did. It's always about the music. I have this abiding faith in the music and that will shine through when I’m dead and gone. I don't really care about the contemporary side of it because I'm always trying to make music that will last a long time. How has it felt to be back on the road, not just here in the UK, but also around the world? We finished the last leg of the tour at the Olympic Stadium in Munich the other night and the band were all saying how 8 | LATEST 7

fresh the whole thing felt, especially after over 100 shows in the past year around the world. It's been great seeing so many smiling faces in the crowd. We have also noticed on this tour a lot more younger people coming to the shows. I guess some people are discovering our music for the first time on Spotify and YouTube.

“ If the audience

isn’t enjoying the show then we’re not doing our job properly! ”

Do you adapt your live experience for the different cities, towns or countries you visit? I'm really lucky to have an amazing band, we're all on the same wavelength when it

comes to putting on the best show possible. We constantly push each other to perform at our best, to go above and beyond for the audience because at the end of the day, if the audience isn’t enjoying the show then we're not doing our job properly! Any rituals before stage time? It used to be one of our tour rituals to play cricket in the downtime before a show and for a while, I had some cricket nets in my back garden. Nowadays I mostly play it on the PS4 at home but I still love going to see the matches at Lord’s Cricket Ground when I have a chance! This tour is specifically to celebrate 25 years since the release of Stars and that tracklisting will be the second half of the show, what about the first half? Rather than just play the same songs we've been playing for the last year, we

are going to introduce a few songs that we haven't played for a while, a few fan favourites. There will be plenty of big Simply Red hits in the first half but maybe not the most obvious ones! You're a settled family man now, will you be bringing them on the road? Touring is effectively me going back to work, so while I'm sure they'll be coming out to see a few shows, I think it may get a little boring for them at this point! Plus, we have to work around school term for my daughter so that limits the amount she can visit while I'm away. Luckily, we won't be too far from home this time so I'll be able to pop back and see her more often than say, if I were back in Australia.

bum, stop trying to figure out what to do by myself and make a change. I turned to Ted Talks and watched way too many, I turned to career books and they made very little difference. I eventually plucked up the courage to turn to a friend who is a coach and talked with her. She reminded me of a quote by Henry Mentzinger and I'm mashing this up to suit my purposes: “Career change is like swimming: you can't learn it from reading a book”. She was right, I had to get out of my head and into action. This formed the basis of my career change, and now, the

I never set out to be a careers coach – and if you ask me what I do – I'd say I'm a “coach”. But when I set up my practice two years ago, I was not expecting so many of my clients to want to focus on changing their careers. The irony is that becoming a coach had been part of my solution to a career that I found wholly unfulfilling.

I

have to admit – I love autumn almost purely for the gorgeous clothes I get to wear! The fresh mornings, the colourful leaves falling from the trees and an excuse to snuggle up on the sofa with a hot cup of cocoa are also fabulous. But luxe boots, chunky scarves and cute pom pom hats follow closely behind in my list of fall favourites. Check out my top buys to cosy up in… Invest in two winter coats to see you through the varied weather and to cater to every occasion. One should be a classic rain mac or trench coat. Depending on your style personality, choose a bold colour like yellow to cheer up a grey day or in opposition, timeless nude. Your other coat should be luxurious, soft and oversized. A good coat can be worn for everything from work, to nights out and Christmas parties. One with a detachable faux fur collar makes it easy to glam up or dress down. Accessories such as scarves, hats and gloves aren’t just for practical reasons. Yes they keep you warm, but accessories are also the affordable way to introduce colour and print into Next faux Fur Collar coat, £85 your wardrobe more subtly and affordably. Try this season’s western and paisley prints or add a bit of fun with pom pom trims and glittery thread. Hosiery and footwear gets vamped up with metallic being Office Love Bug Boots, £65 the key trend. Wear glittery ankle socks on show with heels, gold or silver boots with coloured tights and comfortable and sporty high tops and trainers with the midas touch. Your coats alongside your bags and shoes should be the items you spend the most money on as they are statement pieces and quality really shows here. TOPSHOP, Office, Aldo and Warehouse are amongst some of my favourites for affordable accessories that look super luxe. While Next, Zara, River Island, Aldo and Office are fantastic for footwear & coats. This is the time to not take fashion seriously and sparkle.

ost Saturday mornings I'm on the Breakfast show with Jimmy Willis at Trickstar Radio. Last Saturday however I was booked to do the review of the morning’s newspapers on talkRADIO in London, with the fabulous Penny Smith! Penny is a well known presenter on our televisions and has been on GMTV, Loose Women, The Wright Stuff and Sky News. On 26 March 2016, she began presenting Saturday Breakfast on the new UK radio, talkRADIO. This was when the station was launched and talkRADIO is just that. No music just talking with interesting phoneins. It has a whole host of great presenters including: Paul Ross, Iain Lee, George Galloway, Eamonn Holmes and Bob Mills.

“ I was booked to do the review of the morning’s newspapers on talkRADIO in London with the fab Penny Smith ”

Thankfully the 6.05am Thameslink from Brighton to London Blackfriers was running on time and I got to the studio by 7.30am and was immediately given coffee (which was gratefully received), then I was given a pile of newspapers to go through and had to chose which news stories I was going to discuss on air. Just before 8.30am I was taken into the studio, then Penny and I went live. We talked about everything from Brexit to Brangalina, The Battle of Hastings to Honey G. Just after 9am I was off air and my work was done. The whole Breakfast team made me very welcome and I look forward to going back again soon. I am a total convert now and listen to talkRADIO whenever I can.

JASON BYRNE > Awardwinning international comedian Jason Byrne is coming to town, loaded up with props and an eye on who might join him for a spot of audience participation. Victoria Nangle finds out more Hello Jason, how are you today? Not great, I just back from doing gigs in India, so my hoop, or a**e, is very busy. I’m jet lagged and I got stung by a very angry bee last night after my gig. How big a tour bus do you need to travel with, considering how many props are involved in this show? If I was AC/DC I’d have a tour bus, but all I have is one tour manager and a car. The props spend a lot of time on my lap, or poking me in the head as we travel.

“ The jokes will

have to queue up and be screened before they are let into the British heads ”

If it broke down… could you take it all on the train? I’m imagining baggsying a double seat with a table and filling overhead space, as well as random rubber ducks hanging from bags tied on with string. Am I getting too carried away? Yes. If the car broke down, I have a Velcro suit made for my tour manager, so we stick all the props to his body and he walks to the gig while I order a new car.

You’re renowned for your audience participation in your shows. What catches your eye to make someone seem like a good bet to get involved? If they have a clown’s head or if they look like a slightly battered duck, that’s always a certain to be picked. What do you miss most about home when you’re on tour – as well as your family? I miss my daffodil Eric, he’s great for the chats, but I only really see him once a year, so when he’s not there I take to the muck… he can hear me, oh yes he cannnnnnnnnnn. As an Irish comedian how do you think the Brexit vote might affect your future tours and work in the UK, if at all? I won’t be able to export my jokes to the British audience as easily as before, also the jokes will have to queue up and be screened before they are let into the British heads. So a nightmare ahead for all. You must be used to asking the questions now, rather than answering them, with your chat show Jason Byrne’s Snaptastic Show. What is the best thing you’ve ever asked anybody on your show – and what was the answer? What’s your favourite colour? “Burple” they answered, “how’s that?” I asked, the guest said, “you have to eat skittles and burp, then spit, hey presto, Burple.”

LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

Who would you most like to interview, alive or dead? A dead Charlie Chaplin, I’m sure with no meat on his bones and just comical bits of hair, he’d be as physical and funny as ever. Some fluke has meant that you’ve inherited the old burned out pier in Brighton. With money no object, what would you do with it? I’d fit big sails to it and turn it into the maddest pirate ship ever. I’d sail around the world putting on old dances for old people who used to dance in the old dance halls when they were younger, not older... arghhhhhhhhhh samba. You have toured all over the world. If you could construct one meal from the best bits

of grub that you’ve found in all the different corners, what would it be and from where? Chocolate from Sweden, burgers from Ireland, monkey’s heads from Tibet, Aloe Vera from Kenya, and pastry top from Dubai…. what a dish. Finally, what’s your favourite thing about playing in Brighton & Hove? The sheer beauty, the sound of the waves, the beautiful prom and of course, the young people racing their cars up and down the front… ...ahhhhh Brighton… oh and Hove!!!! ‘Jason Byrne Is Propped Up’ will be at Hove’s Old Market on 4th November. I

am in a foul mood. It doesn’t happen often but this week has seen me more angry – and by that I mean angry more frequently, not like on a scale of one to ten – than I remember being for quite some time. Which means that my patience with others is at ground zero. The good thing about foul temperedness being a rarity is that generally my friends and colleagues are treating it with some good humour. I have become a curiosity as my usual sunny demeanor erupts into cusses and intense critiques. I do know, however, that this indulgence has a shelf life. I was talking, relatively calmly, with my mother and we remembered the old ‘Cross Patch’ nursery rhyme as sound advice in dealing with a bad mood. “Cross Patch, draw the latch, sit by the fire and spin. Take a cup, and drink it up, then let your neighbours in.” In other words, take a moment away from the world and chill the heck out on your own until you feel better. I’m a great believer in this – and it does mean that my pals don’t get pushed too far and stop finding me funny and start finding me just aggressive and annoying. At least I hope it does. In the same way that someone storming down the street, barging the rest of the world out of the way is likely to make whoever gets barged not in the best of moods, I usually try to keep my ill tempers to myself. The last thing anyone needs is to recover a good mood, only to catch their own bad mood back on the boomerang from someone they’d earlier upset. So isolation is my best policy. Who said you can’t learn anything from nursery rhymes. Now I just need to know how to spin...

hold open doors, stand to let people older than me sit on the bus and pepper my life with the words please and thank you. Were I not to I could sense my mother's right hand swishing towards me in horror at my lack of manners. I guess I am of a generation when manners were instilled in us from early childhood and I declare that those manners have never done me any harm. Far from it, they usually prompt at the very least a smile or a thank you. I like that, I like to go through life feeling there is good in the world. Last week I came home feeling that there is a lot of bad in the world. Not that it is that unusual, you only need to watch the news to see gross injustices being carried out in the names of politics and religion. Watching the American Presidential debates has chilled me to the bone, such anger, such greed, so much malice. And all of that will make this week's story small fry – but I will tell it anyway. It was a Saturday night, about eleven and I had spent a great evening at the opera and dining with friends. I was happy, not drunk, and as I was ready for bed I decided to take a cab and from a city centre taxi rank where I joined a small queue. Two people in front got into cabs then it was my turn. Before I knew it someone had jumped into the next cab. I shouted out. Then a young woman jumped into the next cab. I was angry and shouted again, but the driver paid no heed so I decided to take action, yes action. I stepped in front of the cab, which was not moving and refused to move. In hindsight this was foolish, dangerous even but I was delighted that after a minute the driver asked the young woman to get out. She was not pleased. I did not care. I’d made my case and got my taxi. The driver declared that it was not his responsibility but I think he was wrong, surely at a rank the drivers need to make sure that the queue is respected. Yes it's a trifling incident but surely if we all behaved better the world would be a far nicer place.

this was foolish

n a few weeks time the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival Awards will be announced at Merkaba in My Hotel Brighton and perhaps the most prized and seriously fought over award will be that of Young Chef of the Year. Last week I was joined by chefs Ben McKellar of the Gingerman Restaurant Group, Michael Bremner of 64 Degrees and Great British Menu finalist, Billy Humphreys from sponsors Brighton & Hove Jobs and Aaron Thorpe from The Argus to spend a day tasting dishes prepared in competition conditions by the four finalists. First was George T from the very highly respected Isaac @. His dish of pork was an interesting take on the idea of a traditional Sussex dish. Second out was Rafe Pol from The Set, another of the city's highly inventive restaurants, and he chose to cook wild mallard, a very seasonal ingredient. Next was Roman Mikulica from Curry Leaf Cafe, a popular and award winning Indian restaurant in Ship Street. Roman, originally from The Czech Republic gave us an Indian spiced sea bass dish. Finally Liam Thorpe from another of our award winning restaurants, Terre á Terre, gave us a complex dish of pearl barley risotto and king mushrooms. It was a long day with the judges only coming to a decision after five hours of tasting and difficult decision but eventually that decision was made. Of course I cannot reveal that winner now but the full results will be posted here after the event and a hearty congratulations to all four of the finalists for getting that far.

STAGE Nights at the opera > Glyndebourne Tour Madama Butterfly Glyndebourne is well known for creating exceptional new productions, for taking risks and pushing the boundaries of opera, and usually they do this to great effect. Sadly the first night of this new production missed the mark. Shifting the time to the 1950s was pointless, and moving the first act to Goro's down town Nagasaki bridal exchange stripped away Butterfly's innocence and charm. Her arrival through a brick corridor bedecked with neons, too few neons to have real impact, lacked any magic and the weird attempt of cluttered officialdom on the set was lost in the wide expanses of the Glyndebourne stage. The singing was however exactly what we have come to expect. Francesco Verna is not only a beautiful voice but an excellent actor too in the role of Sharpless. Matteo Lippi has a fine voice too and his shift from the acquisitive captain to infatuated lover is beautifully handled as his remorseful performance on his return. One cannot hep feeling that the entire production, despite the excellent singing, is second division, and far from what we have come to expect. 14 October, Andrew Kay, 3 stars

Don Giovanni Glyndebourne's 2014 production of Mozart's masterpiece shifted the time frame to a mid twentieth century Italy as perhaps depicted by de Chirico and populated by Fellini. A heady mix of classicism and decay, sexuality and oppression. Unlike the current Madama Butterfly this conceit works brilliantly, the dark tale, peppered of course with moments of real humour, is a disturbing moral story of greed, misogyny and unbridled lust and it sits well in the era, post war, postMussolini and portrayed as a time of moral collapse. Paul Brown's magnificent set is a fine example of modern stage craft at its very best. Not dependent of technical wizardry but on fine ideas beautifully executed. Duncan Rock is stunning as the Don, his fine voice has real command and Brandon Cedel is a perfect match as his manservant. Anthony Gregory is very fine too as Don Ottavio adding a sweetness to the darkness of the whole. Anna Maria Labin and Magdalena Molendowska were equally impressive in both their solo parts and the ensemble pieces and Bozidar Smiljanié makes an excellent Masetto all macho bluster and simplicity. But the key to the productions success is that this is ensemble work at the very highest level, from design, cast, conductor & director to creat a performance that is compelling watching and listening. 15 October, Andrew Kay 5 stars

ne of the most remarkable music stories of the last few years has been the inexorable rise of the Nottingham based duo Sleaford Mods. You may have seen them. There’s Jason Williamson spitting rhymes and raps while Andrew Fearn stands there, pint in hand, nodding to the beats he has made on his laptop. Not only are the lyrics by turns acerbic, sarcastic, rude and poetic, like a more angry John Cooper Clarke, they are utterly contemporary in their personal dissections of the sociopolitical English landscape. They have also ‘made’ it in their 40s… “Yeah, it is a bit weird,” says Jason. “It still winds people up. Which is good, I suppose. People rubbish it or look down their noses at it, you know. Because we’ve tied it in with this political thing, it gets people’s backs up if they think you’re giving out halfeducated information in your songs. It can wind people up to say the least. It’s a tough one, but what do you do? Some people are never ****ing happy.” After a long spell playing in bands in the ‘90s and noughties, one day it was suggested to Williamson that he combine his vocals with a Roni Size sample. Along with Simon Parfrement (who is still involved with the band as their video director), these two called themselves That’s Sh**, Try Harder, before taking on their present name. It wasn’t until Williamson came across Fearn DJing his own grimeelectro music at a club, and together they formed Sleaford Mods Mark II in time for their album, ‘W**k’, released in 2012. Describing their music as: electronic munt minimalist punk hop rants for the working class, Williamson is responsible for the words, Fearn for the music. And despite the lofi simplicity of Fearn’s music (“It’s really simple, to the point it’s infuriating. I get really wound up by it. Some of it is so unappealing that it makes it appealing.”) and Williamson’s embittered, profanity strewn rants, the duo are becoming – almost mainstream… Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Mon 31 Oct, 7pm, £16.50

righton Early Music Festival have an exciting event at the centre of their programme this year: Gaia – Three Intermedi For A Living Planet (Sat 12 Nov, 3pm & 7.30pm, St Bart's Church). Traditional intermedi involved songs and instrumental music between the acts of a play, but the Gaia concert takes a modern approach: film, projections, lighting, mime, yoga and dance will tell the story of the earth in a way you've probably never seen it told before. The music will include selections from Monteverdi's beautfiul opera Orfeo. There is also a community feel to the evening since the BREMF Community Choir and Consort of Voices will feature alongside professional singers and musicians such as The English Sackbut & Cornett Ensemble. I love events with crossover appeal that bring classical music to a wider audience so am particularly looking forward to the BREMF Live! – Clubnight (Sat 5 Nov, 9pm, The Joker). The evening will feature a wide range of music ranging from lute songs (check out Come Again by Dowland if you're unacquainted with how beautiful the form can be) to early 19th century string quartets. The groups performing have been taking part in open mic nights around Brighton in the runup: Block4 recorders played at Northern Lights and Ensemble Hesperi played Scottish folk songs at The Dorset so they will be experienced in winning round a rowdy audience. Anyone interested in science might enjoy a music drama on the life and discoveries of Galileo Galilei (Sat/Sun 29/30 Oct, 7.30pm, St Paul's Church). The physicist was also passionate about music so the performance will include works he would have known by Carissimi, Gabrieli and Lassus. Go to www.bremf.org.uk to browse the full programme

big hit on the small screen in recent months is the game phenomenon ‘Dara O’Briain Goes 8Bit’. Having grown from a small but enthusiastically received fringe show, to its current status as one of Dave’s flagship programmes, it’s tapped into nostalgia for all ages – a nifty trick. And its creators have not rested on their laurels. Go 8Bit presents WiFi Wars, hosted by one of the TV show’s team captains and comedian Steve McNeil. You go along, log in with your smart phone or tablet (making sure you have plenty of battery charged) and compete in a variety of games, quizzes and challenges. Totally immersive, the show was first performed as part of the Royal Institution’s 2015 Summer Programme, this is fun times with a different twist. Our favourite monthly comedy night,

tipping the next big things and taking a punt on those with new comedic ideas, is here this Thursday – Comic Boom. Headlining will be Tom Allen, whose star is fast ascending (8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, The John Bishop Show, starring in cult BBC radio show Bleak Expectations) and a real treat to see in such close proximity. Currently supporting Sarah Millican, he’s all set to follow in the success of her previous support acts – Seann Walsh and Romesh Ranganathan. Actually, whether you’re generation X, Y or Z, you can’t fail to be awed by Ian’s glimpse into a darker world, rich with surreal imagination. cary clowns, exploding dishwashers, moths the size of kittens and a trumpet the size of the Humber Bridge. All human (and animal life) is on display in The Newspapers, Latest TV's weekly romp around local news stories across the British Isles. Forget the miserable and predictable diet of national news and plunge into the rich pageant portrayed daily in our local newspapers.

“ Local newspapers are where the news begins ” The Newspapers is presented by Press Gazette editor Dominic Ponsford, with Latest TV's Mike Mendoza. Every week Dominic scours the UK's hundreds of regional daily and weekly titles to find out what is really going on in the UK. He said: "Local newspapers are where the news begins. They are free from bias. They tell it as it is without fear or favour. And they tell us what is really going on in the UK. "Every week I pick out stories which inspire and amaze. There are tears, laughter and much that is frankly bizarre. Whatever else it is seldom dull. "Our national news is decided by about six news editors in London. That means that every national broadcaster and newspaper tends to focus on the same stories. "The Newspapers seeks to break free from the herd and provide a different take on life in our wonderful islands."
